Very nice teacher. Somewhat disorganized, but very interesting. Make an effort on the in-class assignments. Was willing to work around my schedule for exam make-ups. Learned a lot!
Shes a really nice lady, just alittle on the strange side, but thats why i like her. She is very helpful and if you dont have any interest in GEO, but need to take the class, take it with her
I love this lady! She is the nicest teacher I've taken at GVSU. She truely does care about her students and will do everything to help them. She held two study sessions for us before the midterm, and is always explaining your questions so you will understand them. If you take this class make sure u get it with her
Professor Kelly is awesome. She is very nice and does care about the well being of her students. She is a little scatterbrained at times but she is very interesting and fun. Learned a lot. Answered all my questions (even the dumb ones). Very good teacher, Highly recommend!
kelly is a really cool professor, she makes sure you understand everything and is willing to help in any way. loved her, get her if you take this course.
Probably the best professor I've had so far. She helped me more on tests than the lecture did. She really cares about her students.
Great teacher, nice and friendly person. You will need to work hard though.
This professor is awesome! Teaching is crystal clear and she's always willing to help. Always happy, great person. I love this woman!! Never a dull moment and on top of that, knows her stuff. MUST study hard for the rock identification test though. That's what dropped my grade so low. Didn't take it seriously.
I loved Kelly! She is an awesome prof. and so funny and cute! She really helped my learn the course material and it actually helped me learn more for lecture! She is great and will do whatever she can to help you. Take her for this class!
Kelly was the greatest. I learned a lot more in her labs than I ever got out of the lecture. She explains things very clearly and will work with you through any questions you have.
Kelly is really neat! She is really helpful when it comes to completing the labs. She is also goofy and entertaining. Take her if you can!
Fantastic Teacher. I am not a science person in any way but she makes class interesting and teaches it in a very clear way. Not a harsh grader. As long as you go to class and do all the quizzes it's an easy B+/A-
Kelly was my lab instructor, and she was really cool and a lot of fun to be around! Sometimes I got frustrated in lab because my group members and I didn't understand some of the information, but she was usually willing to help and was fairly lenient on her grading. All in all, I'm glad I selected her as my lab instructor!
Kelly is fun, and most labs are pretty easy step-by-step stuff. Rocks and Mineral exam is hard, but she gives you a lot of chances to study them.
Boring class. Have to study, but it's not hard to get a B. She's super nice but sometimes crazy
Overall, she's a good teacher and knows a lot about the subject, but she kind of has an attitude problem. She thinks everyone is interested in rocks and isn't very helpful or understanding if you don't know the answer.
Kelly is great! Pretty easy to get a decent grade, I never studied and got C's on the tests and still had an A because she gave us points for showing up to class. She is loves and is crazy about rocks!
Run!! By far the worst professor I've ever had. She does not explain things well and is very condescending when she is asked to further explain a concept. When you get an exam it might as well be in Russian. RUN!!!!
Such a great, influential professor! She really does love Geology, and will help you understand it! Class isn't hard, but there is a lot of material covered and you will need to study. Used the book pretty often. I really did enjoy the class and learn from it! Great gen ed to take with a great professor!!
I had Prof Heid for a lab instructor and would not recommend for non-science majors. You really have to push for a straight answer from her. If you're confused, you're better off asking another student. Have only finished 2 labs within the lab time due to (mostly) confusion. I never know if I'm doing anything right.
Condescending. Tests were absurd. One of the hardest 100 level classes I have ever taken. Take something else.
Not a hard class, but you do need to study. I would not suggest taking a morning class unless you are a morning person..I missed almost every lecture because the lecture really is THAT boring. Do not skip discussion(very easy points) and random lecture assignments to assure attendance. Nice lady, easy class if you try, but very boring.
Kelly Heid is a professor who obviously loves what she teaches. She challenges students but is not hard when it comes to tests and homework. She is always available if you need to meet with her and willing to work to help anyone out. She is clear on content but does use the book a lot. Be sure to read the chapters and take notes on her lectures.
Awesome class, Easy!
She is sooo funny and loves to joke around during lectures and discussions. I would deff. recommend her to anyone interested in Geology and plan on taking more classes with her.
Kelly was someone who know what she was doing and tried her best to make sure that we did as well. It was really hard to understand the material, not the teacher. She is great and she is up beat and knows how to keep the class entertained.
I struggled at the beginning of geology, and I was afraid of failing, but when I actually asked her for help she really did help me out as much as she could and I was able to pass. I even missed the final exam on accident and she let me take it another day! She is very funny and is so interested in her subject, she was a fun prof to have! Recommend
Will not help you the day of test so come prepared. She is not helpful at all. Plan on learning everything for yourself. She is the queen of taking off a half point for every little mistake you make.
Mrs. Heid is a really awesome professor! The class is tough, and you have to be very specific on labs, but she is willing to help and answer all questions. If you work hard, you will do fine. She is hilarious and makes the class very enjoyable. I would highly recommend her.
Kelly is a great professor it is the subject manner that is hard, but she does a great job of explaining if you pay attention, attend class, and ask questions when you don't understand something. She is always happy to help if you don't get something. She loves being a geologist and it shows in here teaching. She hands out in-class extra credit.
Professor Heid is amazing! She is absolutely hilarious and really makes the class fun! I enjoyed her class a lot! It takes some hard work and some studying to do well, but she is very helpful in answering questions.
Prof. Heid is very passionate in what she's teaching , and also is great at explaining concepts if you need help. She's a bit quirky, but she totally owns it and it's kind of endearing. Some of the labs aren't as clear as they could be, but if you just ask she most definitely helps you.
She is very nice and tries to be helpful, but a lot of the time her explanations aren't super clear. She does try to help people who really need it. There are some times where she doesn't really sound like she knows what she's talking about, but overall she's pretty good, and she won't put something on a test if it hasn't been covered in class.
I would have given Heid an easiness of 5 but the final exam is really tough. i had her along with Colgan and they don't correlate very well even though they're married... lab isnt worth enough of final grade. final exam was worth 4.5%, i studied for a whole week and only got a C. other than that lab is pretty easy and i love Heid. she's very nice
Heid is hilarious and a great teacher. Her class was fun. You work with your lab table, and sometimes at the end of class she gives you all of the answers anyways. She drops the lowest lab grade
The teacher is great and she makes it fun, but some of the lab grading is a little harsh, and the FINAL EXAM is very hard.
Kelly is wonderful. She is very passionate about her field and is willing to help and explain things better if needed. Tries to make lecture fun and energetic when the subject matter isn't. Remember to do the online quiz weekly and show up in class for the in class assignment. Tests are bearable if you study normally for them.
Extremely tough grader. Marked me down an entire point for rounding up by .1 in an equation. Does not thoroughly explain what she expects in an answer. Often grammatical errors in the labs/ equations.
I had Professor Heid for Geology labs. She cares for her students, but can sometimes come across as condescending with her remarks. Can't seem to answer a Yes/No question in a straightforward manner. She is VERY picky about units and accuracy so watch out. Overall not a bad prof but am relieved I don't have to take her again for a class.
Kelly LOVES geology and her happiness is infectious. She's silly and tries to make every lab interesting for people that don't necessarily enjoy geology. She's fantastic 10/10 would recommend!!!
Avoid this class, or be prepared to teach yourself everything. Professor Heid is so unorganized and unclear that it is nearly impossible to learn in her class. She quickly goes through a demonstration or material, says "you guys good with that?" and moves on. There is an extreme disconnect between lectures and tested material.
I really enjoyed Kelly as a prof! She is so goofy and made the lab less intimidating. She is very passionate about geology and reminds me of Miss Frizzle. She's a tough grader, but gave everyone 100% on two labs during the semester just for showing up and completing it. She really cares that her students do well in the course.
I love Kelly Heid! She works hard to get to know hundreds of students by name and does a great job teaching with the hands-on labs. You can tell she cares about geology and teaching. She sets up extra study time before the final exam. After taking her class, I switched my major to Geology
Take her for lab! She is very hands on with her students if there is any questions and she is the nicest person. The two exams in her class are the only thing that will set you back but does have very open office hours and help for preparing for them. Great choice
She is a nice lady, but she is very scattered all the time. Anything that she gave us on paper had at least two mistakes on it each time. She was also often rude to us when we would ask clarifying questions. She's not terrible but if I had the choice, I would take someone else.
If you enjoy teaching yourself everything then this is the class for you. I questioned her knowledge multiple times. Always made mistakes when going through powerpoint and on homework. She's all over the place. If you have any questions good luck cause odds are she won't answer your question because she doesn't know the answer. Take someone else.
Kelly Heid's class was DREADFUL. Her tests are hard and she expects you know know a lot of material. She's all over the place and wack. Her notes are fill in blanks and she flys through her powerpoints, which sucks. She has in class assignments and mostly does them on fridays... so yes attendance is mandatory.
There's only two exams so do bad on one of them and there's no going back. She gives out worksheets/ packets in class everyday that she doesn't even explain. Very unclear what to expect on the exams. The students are always correcting her... she doesn't seem fit for this position. Nice lady I guess but an awful professor.
She is kinda all over the place and messy. Like multiple times she had big errors in the power points. Also she has pretty hard exams, but nothing crazy.
Such a great teacher! Kelly really helps students try to understand the material and she makes all of the labs so you don't need a book for her class. The lab are easy to understand and there is only two tests throughout the semester and you can use all of your previous labs on the tests. Overall she is super kind and wants students to succeed!
I am literally drowning in homework assignments. Her lectures are all over the place and impossible to follow. You will ALWAYS have multiple homework assignments to get done. I am always stressed and confused and angry. This class makes me want to rip my hair out. I get like 5 handouts a day and it is so hard to keep track of everything that is due
Professor Heid is such a great professor. Gen eds suck, but she made this class very enjoyable and fun. She is truly passionate about what she teaches and that makes her lectures enjoyable. She gives extra credit in class so try not to skip! I highly recommend professor Heid!!
Prof. Heid always has a smile. She is very enthusiastic about the topic, and always provides excellent examples of concepts. Every exam I had was curved. Her labs are somewhat difficult, but provide great experiences.
Kelly Heid is a very nice lady, but I didn't enjoy her teaching style that much. Often, she would forget to post course content and would need several reminders just so I could get the documents online. A lot of her directions are unclear and I had to ask questions about almost every assignment. She isn't great with technology either.
This class was so great! You could tell she really knew what she was talking about, lectures were interesting, and all posted on blackboard. She offered lots of in class activities for extra credit and outside of class opportunities. Online quizzes were easy and lowest grade dropped. Study guides given for all exams and the tests are very easy!
Shes very funny and makes class fun, she also gives lots of extra credit opportunities, love kelly!
Kelly is hilarious and she knows what she's talking about. There are a lot of in class activities which count toward participation so it's hard to miss class. The lecture slides are posted, but sometimes they are redacted so you have to show up to get the info. Overall, she was a tad disorganized but incredibly passionate and enthusiastic about GEO
Kelly Heid is so passionate about her job, its very refreshing to go to her class. She truly wants everyone to succeed and is so caring. The class content is not hard, she gives out study guides before each test, study those thoroughly. There are weekly 10 point ONLINE quizzes which allow multiple attempts and no time limit. Offers extra credit!!
Absolutely loved this class! I am not a Geology major but this was one of my favorite classes at GV. She is very passionate about her subject and her students. I have learned so much in the class and the lab was pretty interesting as well especially the mining for sapphires activity. I would definitely recommend this class!!
I never knew what was going on in this class. She never knew how to answer questions clearly. She always had excuses for herself. The tests covered things we hadn't even gone over in class. I never missed a class and I was still lost. I spent a lot of time on the homework and never got 100%. It's a miracle I got a good grade in this class.
She had the best attitude and was always so goofy. I always enjoyed and looked forward to her class, even despite it being at 9am. Most of the class was going over the powerpoints and then the only homework would be to do the quizzes (which for the most part were easy) and study for upcoming tests.
Heid is not only passionate about the material, but shes passionate about teaching too. Very funny and sweet. A good lab class for freshmen
Such a nice professor. Class is a little more difficult than I'd like for a gen ed, but as long as you take good notes and follow directions you should be fine. Lab was harder than expected, just make sure to ask questions and pay attention. Don't take if you aren't serious about passing.
My oh my, this woman is such a delight! I'm not passionate about Geology whatsoever, only took it for the Gen-Ed. Heid, however, is SO passionate about this, and clearly loves her job. Her fun-loving energy always brightened up our mornings, and she does a really nice job at explaining things, as long as you actually pay attention.
Kelly is cool and she is very passionate about geology. I would recommend that you take her for this class for sure. The only difficulty I had was that this class moved online due to COVD-19
She is just not teaching this class effectively. Im sure COVID doesnt help, but its unacceptable to be computer illiterate in 2020. Every assignment has typos that change the meaning of the question, clarity is just a big issue. Her questions just dont make sense 99% of the time. Good luck, shes the only one that teaches GEO203.
What in the world??!!! This professor is so unorganized and sloppy with her work. So many typos and confusion on the questions she writes. Her recorded lectures were confusing and she stumbled a lot or mixed up words which really changes the meaning behind the content. She is nice as a person, but it was just a sloppy mess of a class.
Such a sweet person & go to her office hours! Weekly quizzes, no projects and 3 exams. Exams are tough but they are open note and she gives a study guide. She curves grades. A good gen ed to take, but students opinions vary. I think you really need to read and study the material, but other than that the class is super easy. Some ec opportunities!
She's a nice person and the class wasn't too bad except for the exams. They were difficult for the most part but hardly any homework besides online quizzes and short labs due every week. She did give out a lot of extra credit which was really helpful and that's probably what helped me boost my grade.
This class was asynchronous, and it wasn't too bad except the exams were pretty difficult. Study as much as you can for those exams because they're a good portion of your grade, lot of exams too, between the lab and lecture exams. Professor Heid isn't a bad professor at all, but I do think this class would've been way better in person.
Do not take this professor online. She is extremely unorganized, not accessible outside of class, and very unclear in her expectations. Her lectures are long and not helpful or informative. There are 3 lecture exams that are extremely difficult. All of her lectures, documents, and blackboard itself is filled with typos making things very confusing.
Do not take this lab online. All the labs did not transfer well at all being fully online. They were filled with typos as she did not do a good job of checking them over to make sure they work fully online. The labs are very long and you have to submit 100 question labs in all multiple choice form when on the document it is just a chart. AWFUL!!
Took her asynch online. She's nice but disorganized & hard to reach. Some of her assignments and tests had errors which was frustrating. There's weekly lectures and reading but you can get by with just the reading. You have to buy a $90 online thing to even do the class. Not the worst but wouldn't go out of my way to take her again.
Professor Heid is a great lecturer, she loves geology and puts a lot of time in her lectures. Lots of extra credit for the final exam, just go to lecture. Labs are fun in person with a couple of field trips.
Kelly is awesome! She is super passionate about what she teaches and very energetic. She provides good notes that are helpful for the weekly online quizes. She also provides bonus exam points just for showing up to lectures on Fridays or classes that most people would skip. I would take her class again it was very fun and interesting.
She is very nice, energetic and passionate about geology but the content is confusing. The study guides do not match up with the exams, quizzes every week and go to lecture for extra points!! Overall not a bad gen ed. Pretty easy if you are not a science person.
Prof Heid is very energetic, and her passion for geology translates wonderfully into her lectures. Lectures and labs move very quickly and lots of material is covered so it's best to show up, but overall, the class is very fun.
Took her online course. Lots of misspellings, wont answer Qs over email so show up to her zoom office hours if ur confused abt something. Only hw due is quizzes every Fri. And Labs every Wed. The labs are set up in quiz-form. Pretty straightforward. Textbook isnt necessary but is helpful. Labs r kinda hard but if u have a class GC that helps
One of the worst profs I've ever taken. For a 100-level course, I did more work in this class than my 300/400 level courses- and still got a C. Lecture material and quiz questions don't line up, and good luck on guessing. Doesn't respond to emails even though it was an online course, and little sympathy or support. Avoid at all costs
It was a fully online class and very lecture heavy. I feel like it probably would've been better for me to take in person, but I didn't have the availability to. Sometimes there would be quiz/test questions that I feel like we never went over especially in lecture.
Prof Heid is a fun and kind professor!! However, it was difficult to understand her instructions with her poor spelling and grammar. It was kind of tough since it was an online lab, but if you put in the work this is actually an easy class. Be sure to have a group chat with classmates! I never read the textbook and I got an A so don't waste money!!
I had this class online asynchronous. Quizzes are once a week and incredibly easy, you can get extra credit on almost every single one. Everything is very straightforward and Prof makes it super easy to get an A !
I had professor Heid for online GEO 103 (Oceans). Her lectures are very boring and frankly, they never made sense. We were assigned weekly quizzes, 3 exams, and 3 assignments. Nothing that was talked about in the lectures was put on those quizzes or exams. For the 3 assignments, the instructions were very unclear and confusing to interpret.
Super easy and chill teacher. She would put out assignments and give us like a month to finish. She always gives out weekly test and they're due by the end of the week. The material was easy but if you needed any help she was always available.
It's not hard to get in A in the online GEO 100 course. The weekly quizzes were fine and you could find the answers in the lecture powerpoints. The 3 exams were timed and kind of detailed so you'll stress about this class maybe 4 hours the whole semester
Easy class just read the book and listen to lectures. 12 question quizzes every week, exams
Professor Heid was very kind and knowledgeable about geology but the course overall was just a bit unorganized, the lectures were outdated and very long and hard to pay attention and the quizzes usually ended up with duplicate questions or were weirdly worded. The exams also don't nearly have enough time for as many questions are on them.
She grades labs harsh but gives extra credit on quizzes to balance. Responds fast. Not accommodating to disability (I told her I was colorblind and she did nothing). Boring lectures. Virtually no help on labs. No feedback when she marks you down significantly. Expects you to identify details too specifically. Forgot assignment postings often
Terrible professor. The lecture videos were super long and all over the place. The weekly quizzes often had duplicate questions and questions over topics that weren't in the videos or even the textbook. She always has so many grammatical and spelling errors it can be hard to even understand what the questions are asking. Would not recommend.
Kelly is a great professor, very kind and funny woman. I loved her class. I warn other students against taking her class, as the exams are long and difficult, and make up an unfortunately large portion of the class. Additionally, I caution students who believe attendance optional means they can skip. This class is not passable if you skip often.
Love her!! She's so sweet and funny and you can tell she enjoys her job. There is a lot of opportunity for making up missed work and she will work with you as long as you work with her. As long as you pay attention in both lecture and lab, you should do great. It is refreshing to have a professor who genuinely enjoys teaching her students. :)
By far my fav prof EVER! Her lectures were amazing! She truly cared about teaching and adjusting her lectures to help all students understand. She was so sweet and kind and I learned so much more than I ever thought I could about Geology. If you need a gen-ed w/ lab take her course! Shes the best and you won't feel stressed or like you can't pass!
Loved her lab! We got outside twice and put our learning to use. She always explained things really well and as someone who struggles with science, I felt really comfortable. I would highly recommend her lab and lecture courses!!
Take notes
Kelly is sweet. She's the older kind of teacher who tries to be funny lol. The lecture was easy, half the class didn't come because it was all posted and she just read slides, but the lab was important. It could be difficult, but she was helpful and never let anyone fall behind. Good lab gen ed.
Prof Heid is super enthusiastic and makes geology really engaging. Lectures can move quickly, so staying on top of the material is key. I found unstuckstudy and the class GC super helpful for studying. Overall, a fun gen-ed class if you're willing to put in the work!
Very energetic! Fun to be around, her labs were great, however, she can make some typos on tests but you should be fine on her tests as they are all open note, open internet etc, etc. Attendance at lectures wasn't really mandatory but she gave out some participation papers during lectures. Attendance is extremely important in the labs
Professor Kelly was super kind and funny. The only thing I didnt like about her class is that her study guides where nothing like the tests and the tests are a large part of your final grade.
