He knows a lot and can be helpful, but his expectations are rarely clear. If he likes you, you'll do fine.
Great instructor, but slightly favoring upperclassmen.
not only favors upperclassmen but also girls!
only class i've gotten an F in, in my entire life. i can see what the others are saying about him playing favorites...but teachers are only human...good stories, comes off nice at first, but a tough grader w/high expectations for gen ed'ers

this is the 2nd class i have taken with him, and he makes class fun, while challenging the way you thing. very helpful and understanding. he really WANTS you to learn and understand!! Nice guy too, funny.
I took the required speech class with him. His first test was extremely hard, but he was willing to make a study guide for us for the next test which made me get an A on that test. He is a funny guy, that makes things clear as he goes.
This professor may have the largest ego of any professor in this school, when people like to talk about being hypocritical, this guy is it. sure you can't use "other" people's papers for your own use, but he will steal your writings for his own
He picks people at the beginning of the semester he likes and sticks with them. But if you get on his good side, the class is fun. Just be open and be willing to talk.
He really favors people at the beginning of the semester. Has really hard tests, and grades really hard for general speech. Don't take him if you want a grade better than a C!
He will assign something and then never ask for it in class. I also hated how he would make somethings sound so important that weren't, and others that were he didn't make sound important at all. He is one of the most unorganized profs.
he takes this class WAAY too seriously, its a gen ed. He actually claimed that his introductory speech class was harder and more important than a calculus class. also kind of an airhead. nice guy overall though, I dunno if there are better speech profs.
Don't take him. he may seem nice. but he is vague and doesn't keep work so u may end up doing stuff over or paying a fee so he will release your grade.
Worst professor I have ever had. Poor excuse for a human being, useless and worthless in every aspect of life. Always brags about himself yet most students think he is a complete idiot. 99 % of the time he wastes bashing Pres. Bush. He sucks the big one.
Very nice guy
typical stuck in the 60's anti-bush hippie. occasionally parties with students, but that doesn't make up for his lack of ability.
I thought he taught the speech class pretty good. The tests weren't that hard if you studied for them, which meant just going over your notes and the bolded words in the book. I hate giving speeches and got an A, so he must not grade that hard.
He is an alright professor. He can be vauge however if you ask him for help he is willing to assist you. He is a pretty easy grader as long as you know what you're talking about and participate in class.
Very disorganized. Gives out assigments and never ask for them. But he's easy. I got B's on my speeches and still got a final grade of A. However he says one thing and does another. Will tell the class your speech was an "A" speech and give you
extremely vague, pointless assignments, often emphasizes points which are useless and forgets to highlights those which are important; tells stories which do have a point, it just takes him 20 min. to get to it.
Not the clearest, however, very funny, and pushes students to excel.
Nice Guy.
AFter giving us the wrong study guide and changing it to the right one 2 days before midterms...with no apologies other than "I was up till 2 last night" What do you think? His disorganization will reflect on my GPA. Sux.
i thought it was great that we had to do community service project, i really got a lot out of it, and the book Tuesdays with Morrie was really powerful!
fun guy
I think he is a good teacher.
terrible organization(this is not a good thing because when he forgets something he still expects you to have it done). terrible tests and assignments. He touches you all the time. He tells girls the clothes they wear are "a little revealing". t
Had an extreme makeover once the baby came. He made me melt when I was sitting in class.
Very interesting class with a lot of interaction with and amongst classmates. Friendly and Approachable.
i love Kelly! He's really funny and asks everyone if they like his hair. He'll bend over backwards for you.... The only people who complain about him are lazy and don't want to study as much as he wants you to. You'll get used to him after the first test
discloses your grades in class and in front of your peers; vindictive and passive agressive; condesending and judgemental; no related credentials to class subject; will blame not only you, but the whole class for his mistakes; grades arbitrarily.
unorganized & unprofessional; lacks konowledge in content area he is supposed to be teaching; is not open to constructive criticism, but openly gives unconstuctive and harmful criticism to students; inconsiderate of student's beliefs and values
No Comments
One of the best teachers I've had! I like that he actually got to know people's names. He cares about his students and wants them to do well. He gives constructive criticism and is willing to spend time helping you improve. Great guy!
not too bad of a teacher; not very helpful though
wonderful teacher, never in a bad mood, very funny, very pleasant all of the time. i've actually learned things about speech in his class and am now perfectly comfortable with public speaking whereas before it made me extremely nervous
He's very unorganized- and I've found he's very unhelpful outside of class. He's a hilarious professor, and a great man...Just not the best teacher out there. It's very hard to understand what he wants you to do for an assignment & he grades VERY hard on your speeches you give in class.
cool guy but he is tough on grading speeches. It is hard to get and A in this calss but it is also hard to get an F. Class overall is easy. ONly have to do 4 speaches and 2 tests. He knows his stuff, but makes class fun. I would take him again.
Awesome teacher; funny guy. Tough grader on speeches, but he is fair. Midterm and final are the only real tests. He really cares about his students and like to tell stories and jokes. I would definitely take him again
He is very funny, a great guy, and loves to joke. He does grade tough on his speeches, you have to work for an A, but if you do your stuff you will get a definate B. You have two tests, the mideterm and final, very easy. Good professor to take if you want to learn.
He is horrible. He gave me the WRONG FINAL GRADE!! and wouldnt respond to the THREE emails i mailed to him asking him if he could check to see if he made a mistake. He scores your assignments wrong, and you have to show him his mistakes, then you are left wondering whether or not he fixed it.
When discussing this class with us, he told us that he would give himself an "F" for teaching it. I would agree.
He was a great professor he is easy going and tends to help you with any problems you have and grades tough but fairly.
Kelly Herold is a great man and a great prof. He's very smart and very funny. Makes class fun and interesting. He's very hands on and teaches things that you can actaully use. Hard grader, but read the book and you'll do fine. If you leave WSU without taking his class, I really feel sorry for you.
He is an awesome professor. He makes his class very interesting and somewhere you want to be. I learned a ton in this class, and I recommend you take him for this class...he makes it pretty hard not to get an A in.
very nice guy and fun class, but midterm and final tests are difficult.
Finals and midterms are hard. isn't very clear in what he wants in speeches. doesn't let you know whats on the final. Has you read books and the textbook.
Professor Herold is a difficult teacher. We dont really dicuss the materail in class, it seems to just be thrown at us. The midterm was hard and he seems to have high standards for the speeches.
he is a great teacher, if you read the key terms in the chapter you will ace the midterm and final. he wants students to do well.
Bias teacher
Seemed very disorganized. Had fun side projects which never seemed to end (too many). Fun personality. Very difficult midterms and finals. No assistance with prep for exams. Still I learned a lot from his class.
If you have to take Public Speaking Class and are looking for a better grade-HE IS DEFINITELY NOT YOUR CHOICE.The professor is unfair, do not take his class!!!
very unorganized & unclear. Never went over midterm & final material in class but was only told the chapters the test would be on 2 weeks before tests. Critisizes students study habits & in general without knowing them truly but stereotyping. Very hard grader. Makes you read literature that has nothing to do with the curriculm & no syllabus given.
i've been in class for two weeks, and the guy is a total jerk. i get that he's on the school board. i'm hear to hearn how to give a speech. he sure isn't organized and can't seem to explain the easiest of concepts. he seems distracted -- at least i hope he's just distracted and not that out of it all the time. maybe hes on bigtime meds.
Trust me, DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS, unless you want a general education class to ruin your GPA.
For someone who does not like public speaking, I really enjoy this class! It is difficult and sometimes I wish he would spend a bit more time telling us how to improve our speeches, but Dr. Herold is a really cool guy and really treats us like equals. He also makes the classroom feel really comfortable and casual.
Dr. Herold loves to talk about himself so you'll have to get used to that but he does care about his students. This course is harder than other generals but he will improve your speaking. He has turned terrible speakers into decent speakers. But he does talk about himself way too much.
He's a nice guy. You ask for help, he'll go out of his way to help you. He can be pretty disorganized and this makes it hard to know what to do sometimes. He will randomly change plans completely without much warning. Beware of tests and the final paper. You don't much info to help prepare for them.
Overall he's an Ok guy. But harder than other CMST191 profs. Also, hard to know what he wants. He "wants inprovement" but doesnt show/tell you how. Also, have to read "Let us Now Praise Famous Men." Zzzz. and write a paper on it. (What does writing a 'book report' have to do with Speech?) Save your GPA. Go with someone else.
Don't take his class! He picks his favorites and those are the ones that get good grades! He doesn't tell u how to improve on your speeches he just says ur speeches need improvement.. You can give a speech on whatever you wnat pretty much but if he doesn't like the topic you won't get a good grade!
I thought this class was super easy. He does seem to have "favorites", but i was one of them. come to class, listen, and just try your hardest on the speech and you'll do just fine!
Dr. Herold is a really nice guy. He really cares for you and has really good stories. If you try really hard youll be ok. I got an A but I did have to work really hard! There is alot of extra work but hes pretty easy going and lets stuff slide.
He is a really good prof. His class in somewhat hard but if you study for the two tests you will do just fine. He just wants you to improve and he does actually help you improve your speeches. He comes off as a hard prof but in the end he isn't. He curves his exams so you won't do too bad.
awesome guy, fair grader, classes aren't very structured but he has a lot of fun teaching and is fun to listen to...also pretty laid back. i would take this class again even though i hate public speaking
I don't understand why anyone would not enjoy having Dr. Herold for their prof. He was a really nice guy who actually knew what he was talking about. He made class time available to help with the speeches and if he could not help you during that time you were able to see him during his office hours. He was a fair grader and wanted to help.
Dr. Herold is really helpful, his class is somewhat hard, but if you study for the two tests you will do well. He really likes teaching, and makes classes interesting. He really helps you improve. If you just show up and pay attention you will enjoy this class.
Dr. Herold is a horrible professor. He has his favorites and if you are not one of them you have to work extremely hard to get a decent grade. He thinks his class is the only class you have. His test are rediculous. The final was defining 40 vocab words. When will we ever use these again. Horrible class. Don't take him if you don't have to.
Everyone should take this class before they graduate! Class is a little all over the place. I learned a lot! Dr. Herold is very intelligent and will aways go the extra mile for a student. Take this class.
never repsonds to your email. Picks his favorites and grades completley how he feels about the person. neither honest or fair. do NOT take this teacher
what a total idiot. told me i wasnt motivated enough for intro to public speaking because i missed one class. how stupid, i prolly know more about public speaking than he does anyway. seemed like a total imbecile to me.
He is sooo funny!! Means well just a little unorganized. You can definatly lean a lot from him and he is really proud of his students.
He's a really good guy, and cares about hs students as persons. He is, however, very disorganized and not straightforward
I learned a lot from this class. It was a lot of work, because I took it during the summer, but I got an A. He is a good guy, and pretty funny too. I would recommend!
Could not stand the guy. Inarticulate. Disorganized. Lacks even basic teaching skills. Plays favorites. STAY AWAY!!!!!!
I have thought this guy was worthless & disorganized b4, but he reached a new low in this class. he is waaaayyy over his head trying to teach this class. i don't think he knew what he was talking about but he sure talked about himself all the time. anyone else teaching the class would have 2 b better than him.
Ugh, the worst for playing favorites. If you aren't a favorite, just give up
Funny guy. Likes to do in-class discussion. Three books are assigned, but do not need to be read thoroughly to complete assignments. Only 2 big projects, a take home midterm, 2 papers, and a final. Very opinionated and chooses favorites...but, if you're a favorite, you've got it made. :)
He is very unclear about almost all of the assignments and tests. I like that he attempts to make class interesting but you never know what you are doing and he doesn't seem to either. Nice guy but bad teacher. Stay away from this class. Extremely, EXTREMELY hard. I've been to every single class and am still lost...
He is an interesting person. I don't know how he got a PHD. he may be smart but he is an awful teacher! His speeches are easy just follow the rubric but the tests you need to read the book after you never use it in class. You are lucky if he tells you what chapters to look at more than a day before the test.
Avoid at all costs. Not clear at all on any assignments. Nice guy but bad teacher.
Horrible. Says he's going to email you your homework/grades/videos and never does. Forgetfull. Clueless. Talks about his life and daughter instead of teaching ANYTHING.
very unprofessional, expects too much from college students. Community service should not be required in a speech class, no relevance. Don't take his class if you are not a strong speech giver, or if you feel like being lazy. A lot of useless work. Doesn't do things that he says he will do.
he didn't say anything about the text book
the WORST for playing favorites. rambles on about plastic bottles for half the class period instead of actually teaching.
taking him was the worst decision of my academic career.
I have no idea what the people above are thinking. I took speech with Dr. harold over the summer and was one of the best experiences I've ever had. great professor teaches you ACTUAL life skills hands on and actually cares about the students
Dr. Herold is a great man. He is a little scatter brained at times but overall a great teacher. You have to really pay attention to what is going on but the class is interesting and very informative. Not a lot of Homework, just reading and group presentations. He loves this class and you will get a lot out of it.
worst prof I have ever had. totally disorganized, plays favorites. I learned NOTHING from this man. AVOID HIM!
Easy Class but he never seems to make sense. And if you every try to get ahold of him DONT EMAIL HIM HE WILL NOT EMAIL YOU BACK!
Dr. Herold is one of the most self centered, arrogant people I've ever met. Choose topics he recommends or you will not receive the grade you deserve. Plays favorites. There's two exams over the book that are never discussed and just thrown on you over material that is irrelevant.
Awesome
Professor Herold is not a good teacher. He is a very hard grader and expects his class to come before all the rest. He also tries to test you on stuff that he never taught you. If you can help it, take a different speech teacher!
Prof. Herold is a very nice professor, but chooses favorites. There's only a mid-term and final, and his study guides do not help at all. Doesn't hand things back on time. Very easy to get along with. Not an easy A, but I really enjoyed his class.
Would NOT recommend! He is an okay prof., REALLY bad with playing favorites! he is a pretty easy grader on the speeches. 2 tests and they were HARD! He doesn't talk at all about whats on the test, you pretty much need to know the book front and back. bad at emailing back, and rambles the whole hour about random things.
Dr. H is a bit unorganized at times but very passionate about his field. Was always willing to help and be critiqued and despite the dullness of the subject matter made class interesting and fun.
Dr. Herold is an extremely nice man. Sometimes he can come off as arrogant and rude because of his humor, however he does not intend it that way. He is really passionate about teaching but is extremely unorganized in all his classes. keep in mind what he expects of you in the beginning of the semester is dwindled down to about half by the end.
He is a very good professor. You do have to do some work in the class. The first test is hard, but the final is not bad. He will help you if you need it. He means very well and has a great passion for learning. Highly recommend.
Great guy overall. Not always the most organized, but he means well. Don't be overwhelmed by how much he says he expects out of you because he might be the easiest grader in the world. He can definitely be funny too. His classes mainly are based around one big paper. Show him a little progress on that now and then and he'll love you. Recommended.
Herold is an awesome professor! He may overwhelm you with the amount of stuff he "SAYS" he wants you to do during that semester time but he usually cuts that down by more than half. He is always available to chat after class, and he will meet with you. He is not the best emailer so you need to go find him, but he is the nicest guy in the world!
He is so unorganized it is ridicules. Wr never learned anything about organizational communication because he was so caught up with wanting to go green because it is his passion. During my whole college career I never had a worse professor. He also tends to give the pretty girls more attention in class.
I love Professor Herold!! He is one of the nicest professors I've had here and he is always so interesting to talk to. Definitely one of the smartest guys around, despite how scatterbrained he is. Give him a chance and it will be the easiest A you'll get this semester.
Dr. Herold is a great professor! He's the man that set my college career on track. He grades his speeches tough but lightens up by the last couple as long as he sees improvement. His midterms and finals are hard but if you do the 20 hours of studying he suggests you'll get an A for sure!
Very unorganized, rambles, often teaches off-topic, tests are difficult because material was not taught. Not an ideal teacher, but nice individual.
This professor is extremely annoying because he is NEVER clear on his expectations!! The material he expects you to know for the final is minimally covered in class if at all. Never in his office hours and comes to class unorganized. Very nice person and entertaining to have in the room but if you need an organized professor avoid his classes.
Received an A on all of my speeches. Got C's on midterm and final.. Got a C for my final grade. Take another professor that focuses on speaking instead of book work. Extremely unorganized. Avoid for sure.
Dr. Herold is a really nice guy, but he is extremely unorganized. He grades speeches good, but the midterm was on material that we never covered. He genuinely wants to make you a better speaker, and he is extremely passionate about his job. Not a first choice, but if you get him, just work hard.
Herold is a nice guy but not a good professor. Unorganized and is not clear on what he wants you to do. The midterm was more difficult than it needed to be. Avoid.
He is a nice and interesting professor but very unorganized. About half of the things discussed in class has nothing to do with what we are learning or what is in the book. Tests are very hard in the class, only two, midterm and final. Speeches are not bad, only gave three.
He is interesting to listen to, but does not stay on topic and changes assignments at the last minute. If you do not agree with his views exactly, it will be reflected in your grade.
Dr. Herold is a very kind man but he is extremely scatter-brained. He began the semester with an established schedule and he did not stick to it at all. One 10-page paper, one video assignment, one 20 minute presentation, and multiple tests is way too much for an intro class. Only take if you have to.
He can be a bit overwhelming at first and is very scatter brained, but he ended up being my favorite prof! He likes when students use his office hours and he will always re-explain something if you do not understand it. Don't skip class or use your cellphone during class. I would recommend taking him!
Forgets everything he's ever said.
Incredibly confusing professor. Decent reputation for being "funny", but a few witty comments per class can't make up for his complete lack of organization and clarity. Never fully explains what he wants, uses the "that's how it is in the real world" excuse to cover his behind. Would not recommend.
I had to drop his class because he never gave us a syllabus. Presentations get moved around even ON the day you present. When he did send us the syllabus it was the wrong one. Just think twice before taking him as a professor.
He is by far the worst professor anyone could ever have. He is extremely inconsiderate, unreliable and unclear of what he wants. His requirements are ridiculous and he doesn't communicate well at all. Taking his class was a living hell. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Herold is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet. As a professor, he cares so much about his students. Sadly, he lacks organizational skills. He does not follow through on many of his plans and does not follow his syllabus. This was extremely frustrating as a student. Overall, I would recommend him, but be aware of the lack of class structure.
Dr. Herold is a very interesting guy, and he talks about his life and daughter a lot. I enjoy him as a person, but as a teacher he isn't very organized and doesn't stay on track very well. Assignments seem to never be set in stone. If you are easy going, this class will be just fine. If you like a lot of organization he will drive you nuts.
He truly cares about this students. Can be scattered brain at times but he has improved a lot since the last class I took with him. If you show interest in the material and stay a little late and chat, you will do great in the class.
He is a nice guy, but very disorganized. I studied my butt off for each test and still got D's on every one. His test questions were often misleading or confusing, as was his lectures. He doesn't follow a syllabus or use D2L so it's hard to keep track of your grade. I didn't learn very much in his class, and I don't plan on taking him again.
He is a very nice guy but an awful teacher. He never returned grades on a test and the final speech from class. NEVER told you what your grade was, it was a complete guessing game. He does really care about his students and you do learn a little bit but if you are a type A person, he will drive you CRAZY. He's disorganized and very unclear.
This wasn't your run-of-the-mill speech class. This was relationship advice, and making sure you know 50% of marriages end in divorce-class. Easily the most disorganized class I've ever been apart of. Don't count on ever seeing your grade. He most definitely guesses on it at the end of the semester. Also, he grades speeches pretty harshly.
Loved this course. Have taken other classes with him and will continue. He is disorganized be prepared for that.
Great teacher. he gives you the grade he thinks you deserve. Work hard and go in for help and he will love you.
Dr. Herold is a nice man and wants every student to succeed. You will have to put in the work for your grade. Pay attention and go see him during office hours, make sure he knows who you are! It may seem like he rambles during lecture, but everything he teaches ties directly back to the textbook readings. Reading is essential to passing this class.
He really does want all of his students to succeed and he is very passionate in his work, but the worst part of the class was the clarity. Schedule gets changed around every day. Also, beware of the online quizzes. They are pretty specific.
Dr Herold is one of the nicest professors I have had and he treats his students like family. He would easily meet you at any time you need help regardless of the hour of day. However his class is quite disorganized and often times you find out about an exam or paper due the next class. Nothing unmanageable but not always the most organized prof
Dr. Herold is a fun professor. He loves his students when the participate. He is disorganized and takes time to give back your grades. A great teacher to have fun in a class and gives good feedback on speeches. My favorite class to participate in!
Literally..."Where everything is made up and the points don't matter". He is a great person, would love to get a beer with. And he is smart. But as a professor - unorganized, no structure, no idea what is happening, no idea what your grade is all semester, confusing, poor direction. Avoid.
Participation is absolutely essential. He basically grades you on how well he believes you comprehended the material. He isn't very organized but he is a great and caring person. If you are an organization freak do not take. Otherwise I would definitely recommend
If you are looking for a class where you are searching for an A and want to follow a syllabus but not learn then don't take this class. However, I learned more from this man in a year than I had in all 4 years. He understands it is more than just a letter grade and syllabus. Makes you work hard but one of the best professors at WSU.
Super chill guy. If you have questions just go ask him and he'll answer them. This class was extremely easy and I would take it again
I personally did not like Kelly Herold. He cancelled class often with the whole finding a new dean for liberal arts. and didn't know what the final was going to be when we would be taking it in a month. He shows little respect to students who don't show up and talks about his daughter too much during class. He also doesn't reply to emails often.
Dr. Herold has little to no structure with class. Sadly, for many CMST majors, this class is required, so just deal with it. He's funny and has students lecture most of the time, so class isn't terrible, but he does rely on people reading from the book. Doesn't stick to the syllabus much (in terms of attendance and schedule). Decent guy though.
Best speech teacher ever. I had horrible social anxiety and with his help, I did amazing on my speeches. If you try he really truly cares and will help. If you slack off, of course he's not going to want to help. Amazing teacher. Would recommend him to anyone that is nervous for taking speech. He has a clear layout of the work he wants and is fair.
He is disorganized as heck, and doesn't reply to emails but is by far one of the absolute best professors on campus. Teaches more than just speech, but relationships and how to communicate. He is super helpful and understanding when you go in for office hours. Also hilarious. If you want someone who is a good person not just a teacher, its him.
Herold is literally just a chill guy who has a fiery passion for communication studies. Class is disorganized, but he is fair with his grading. Show up, participate a little bit, and get to know him. Ask him about his daughter!
Absolutely loved this professor. Made me look forward to coming to class. Read, and do your work and you will pass.
Kelly Herold is a wonderful professor. He is super chill, talkative, and makes class enjoyable. He grades pretty leniently, especially on speeches. Very easy class to do good in. He isn't great at responding to emails, but will answer any questions and help a lot in person for office hours or end of class.
Professor Herold is a very genuine guy, but his class is very unorganized, so read the book. Pretty lenient on grading speeches as long as you put effort in. Will go off on tangents, but not only teaches you about communication but relationships and current issues as well.
A good guy, but is very disorganized. Make sure you read the book, because you don't discuss content very thoroughly in class and will have test with free response questions. Does not reply to emails, and is sometimes hit or miss with office hours. At first didn't like him, but as the semester goes by you'll see he cares and get used to his tactics
Unless you're one of his favorites, he won't give you the time of day. He tends to be slightly scatterbrained and is hard to impress with speeches. Meeting outside of class is near impossible because he is always busy. But he is a nice guy that makes class fun and enjoyable. Just make sure he knows who you are (be opinionated) or you won't pass
Dr. Herold is a little all over the place when it comes to his lectures, but is a really good guy. He cares about everyone. He isn't a tough grader when it comes to speeches just remember to not read the note cards!
Not great. Going to class is a waste of time, but is mandatory. Tests are strictly out of book, even though he will lecture. Spent several classes talking just about his divorce SUPER UNCOMFORTABLE! Swears a lot. Has no filter. Is not contactable outside of class.
Dr. Herold is one of the most down-to-earth educators I've met. He cracks some good jokes and is truly a people-person! He even invited us to his farm! Such a cool guy. That said, I had no clue his class was going to be a breeze. Read the textbook to do well on tests, but don't sweat the speeches; there's only 3 of them and you'll do fine.
Pretty chill at first, but don't get used to it. The work is not difficult, but grading is unclear. First of all, we took three tests throughout the course and I didn't get to see my grade for any of them. Same goes for the last two speeches. Also good luck getting ahold of him because he doesn't respond to emails and he's never in his office.
Kelly is such a sweetheart and really cares about his students. But he's really scatter-brained and sometimes plays favorites. You'll survive if you have him, just try to do your best.
By far my favorite professor! He is funny and he definitely cares about his students. He convinced me to change my major to communication studies because his class is that fun and interesting!
Herold is funny and I liked his class, but he definitely has favorites. If you give a speech, make it about something personal- he is more likely to give you a better grade. Super unclear grading criteria and he will tell you that you'll get one thing and then give you something different. Hard to contact outside of class.
This was my favorite class at WSU. He is so down to earth and cares what you give your speeches about. The textbook is an easy read and is not bad to read at all. Have a few topics you want to give your speeches about, he will have to approve them. This class is not hard if you remember the layout that he wants. I really wanted to show up to class!
Dr. Herold is great! He lays down his expectations, but it flexible and cares about the students. He really tries to get to know you and have you get to know him and his life. First part of the sem. is from the book, but super easy--tests are with a partner. The you do 3 speeches-if you prepare and try, you get an A. Definitely would recommend.
Absolutely loved this class. He has gotten much better on grading and told us our speech grades the same day we gave them. Dude is hilarious and a blast to listen to! I would absolutely recommend this class. It is super easy and very enjoyable.
Great professor, great classes, I have taken multiple courses with this Professor and he definitely knows how to teach.
Lectures for the first half of the course, but NONE of it is on the tests. He talks about his divorce and daughter ALL class long, but tests are written strictly from the book. Have fun when the speeches come around, because you wont be able to reach him. He wont reply to emails, texts, or calls. He will also probably not be in his office hours.
Herold is kind of a goofy guy and tends to ramble on about random things, but I don't mind it. He doesn't usually spend a lot of time lecturing in class, so make sure to read the book for the tests. He's very approachable if you need some help with tests and speeches but I have heard he doesn't respond to emails very often. Would take again.
Herold is kind of unclear about his work. He grades barely anything but there is a good amount of stuff in the grade book. He really only grades speeches. Hes funny and very understanding.
Dr. Herold is one of the best professors you could have at WSU. He will always do his best to work with you on speeches and make you comfortable while giving them. If you study for the tests and take time to write and practice your speeches you will do fine!
Dr. Herold is a professor that is a great person, but not a great professor. His guidelines for speeches are vague, but he is understanding when students have issues. He will probably shoot down most of your speech topics, if not all. But, his class is not hard if you show up and show that you're trying.
Professor Herold is a really nice guy. While he is a really cool, caring professor, he can be very scatterbrained at times and doesn't have clear grading criteria. Also, he doesn't use the D2L grade book so you really don't know what your grade is until the end of the semester.
Dr. Herold is a funny guy but if you like organization, do not take him. His class is never structured, he is very scatterbrained, and he is very unclear about what he expects from everyone. Can be a fun class if but is also very confusing and messy all the time.
Honestly, I really liked Dr. Herold. He is very scatterbrained and it was hard to know what was due. He gives good feedback and is passionate about teacher. Cancels class occasionally and emails are tricky to understand. Now that I've had him as a professor I would definitely take him again.
Dr. Herold is so fun to be around. The class is kind of common sense plus three formal speeches, but overall not hard. He makes class fun even though some of the material isn't all that interesting. A favorite professor from the semester!
If you like organization I would not recommend he. He is very random and his grading is very unclear. You don't know your grade until the end of the semester and make sure you read the book because all the exams are right from the textbook. Kelly is a very caring professor but very unorganized.
Extremely disorganized, but he is a great guy who really cares about his students. Even invites his classes for a cookout at his house (highly suggest going, he has a beautiful home and introduced us to his cows). Do not take him if you like structure. Do take him if you just want to have a fun class.
The most frustrating/disorganized professor. He didn't give us a syllabus until week 3 & it didn't have the right course name on it or office hours. There are never clear guidelines and he assigns things last minute. He assigned, then unassigned, then reassigned a paper many times. The only thing I learned from Prof. Comm skills is what NOT to do
Super disorganized. Sometimes wouldn't know when/if we were going to have class until 15-30 min. before class typically begins. Doesn't use D2L to enter grades, so you won't know your grade until the end of the semester. If you like organization, not your ideal prof. But if you're looking for a chill/fun professor, you would prolly like him more.
Very disorganized and you dont know your grade unless you ask him, but he is nice and caring. It can also be hard to reach him sometimes. Tests are opened notes and speeches arent that bad as long as you follow the examples and rubric.
Dr. Herold is hardly reachable outside of class, you cant count on a response that day or even at all. Does not give clear grades on speeches and you arent able to access your grades on assignments/anything since he only posts your final grade. He is super nice but not very communicative.
Quite a disorganized professor, things are constantly in flux. Often times felt like you never really knew what was going on in class. Lectures were not great, generally did not go over that much which is not great for preparing students for exams, also lectures very fast. Definitely would not recommend this professor if you are conservative.
He is very unorganized and scatter brained but such a good professor. He knows what he is talking about and he cares about his students. As long as you are respectful, show up to class, and do your work you will get a good grade. However, he does not put grades in until the very end so you will not know grade until end.
He is very disorganized, and hard to reach outside of class. Grades are not published until the end of the semester, which adds on stress to the course. Course alternates between book/group work to 3 essentially back to back speeches. He truly does care about the wellbeing of his students, aside from that I would honestly take him again.
Professor Herold was one of the only professors that I have had that actually cared about his students. He can be quite unorganized, but it is easy to ask for help from him! He is politically opinionated but respects others' beliefs. He is very easy to get along with as long as you participate in class, follow directions, and respect him.
One of the most unorganized teachers I've ever had, but his heart is in the right place. He is very willing to accommodate students who struggle with social anxiety or have a great fear of speaking in front of a large audience. Also, he offers some extra credit options.
He was the funniest professor I ever had. I never wanted to miss this class because of how funny and nice he was.
Dr. Herold was one of my favorite professors by far. He is the most scatter-brained person you will ever meet, but I have never had a professor more invested in student success than him. He truly cared, and put in effort to learn each students name. Speech is always hard, but he wants students to succeed. He is very fair professor, super funny too.
Seriously the most unorganized professor ever. He taught us how NOT to communicate. I would regularly find out about homework due the next morning at 9pm the night before. Also gives out homework then completely forgets about it. A month left of the semester and still doesn't have anything in the grade book. Good luck...
Very fun and informal professor. Somewhat unorganized, but always willing to clear things up or meet during office hours. Not too much busy work but tests are worth a lot of points, which aren't too bad as long as you're keeping up with the material. He's pretty understanding & lenient if you communicate with him. His classes are memorable for sure
Professor Herold is an amazing person, he's just kind of disorganized. This class was graded on a paper, a couple tests, but mainly three main speeches. The speeches are not bad as long as you follow his instructions and examples and just do them.
Professor Herold is a great guy! He's super caring and gives good feedback. He is very entertaining and it is not challenging to pass this class. However, poorly communicates with his students...kind of ironic given he's a communication studies professor. Lacks rubrics, class organization, and you won't know your grade until the end of the course.
Dr. H is an amazing person and really tries hard to get to know his students. He loves you like you're his kid. Show up to class and everything will be perfect. There is hardly any work outside the classroom. He NEVER puts in grades, but you can estimate. Such an amazing guy he really loves his job.
Literally the best professor I have ever had. He truly cares about each one of you, and making connections with his students is a main priority of his. He is very committed to his job, and truly wants to see success in each one of his students. I loved Dr. Herold.
Dr Herold is a great guy, but not a good professor. He cares about his students greatly and tries to connect with them. Very all over the place though. Never puts anything into D2L. Likes to send lots of emails. Starts assigning projects and assignments 3 weeks before class ends. Talks about his love life. Not sure how it was an intro to comm class
You can tell Dr. Herold cares deeply about all his students. He is always willing to listen and is a very understanding person. His class can be pretty unorganized, nothing happened when the rubric said it would. He is a very smart guy, its amazing how much and how many people he knows. Most of his tangents can be pretty useful!
Dr.Herold is not organized at all. you start by reading "till" and writing some papers, then you have 2 or 3 tests that are with a partner and open book, pretty easy. then you have 3 back to back speeches. he is a tough grader but he helps if you show up to class. the final is terrible. he doesn't enter grades. he really cares about his students.
Love Dr. Herold as a person but would not take him again, teach one chapter to class, seven tests, group movie, very scatter-brained, emails are confusing, very hard to access outside of class
Did not receive any grading in this class, end of semester meeting to negotiate grade, expects help in changing accessibility on campus, felt like more of a club than a class, learned about advocacy, very scatter-brained
Honestly he gets carried away in his lectures.I hardly ever went and still got a B.Just work hard on your speeches and you will do just fine. His tests are all open book expect for the final I believe but even then I don't think so.Doesn't post to D2L and you don't know what your grade is most of the semester. You can always go to his student hours
Dr. Herold is by far the weirdest professor I've had, at times it was in a good way, other times not so much. Super fun guy, but is unclear with what he expects of us, and he's not very organized. It's a presentation heavy course, but he gives good feedback and genuinely cares about your progress. Be prepared to put a lot of effort into this class
Dr. Herold is the most dad like professor you will ever get. He cares about you as a student as well as a human being, yes he may get carried away, yes he may not show your grades right away. But he makes speech easy, and less scary. The finals you mainly get to use open notes, and theres only 3 speeches. Theres not a lot of busy work either.
Strange class, talked about his divorce a lot. Unclear instructions, half the time I had no idea what was expected of me. Somewhat hard to reach outside of class. He made myself and others uncomfortable at times. Likes to talk about politics. Not a hard class, just one I dreaded. Makes you go to long communication events outside of class.
great guy. you can definitely tell he cares about his students. he is always offering times he is available to help outside of class, keeps the class entertained, etc. he's not very strict but he keeps you accountable so just do what you're supposed to. you are required to go to some events but its not terrible. sometimes unclear, but just ask
I would highly recommend taking his class. His lectures are a little all over the place but the work that needs to be done is clear. He is a great, caring professor and he really just wants whats best for his students. He lets you make revisions to your work to boost your grade. If you're taking CMST I highly recommend him.
You will not know your exact grade throughout the course. However, he cares a lot about his students and will go the extra mile for you if you meet him halfway. He has varying office hours. He gradually gets harder throughout the semester on grading. The Caste book is necessary. His classroom is an overall fun environment.
Dr. Herold is a great guy. He cares about his students and will do whatever he can to help you pass, only if you go to his office, participate, and try.
Dr. Herold is so funny. He cares a lot about his students. The exams were taken as a class. He had a clear idea for what he wanted for speeches. He is a good guy, and he knows what he's talking about. Overall good professor and I thought the class was fairly easy. Definitely recommend if you're nervous about public speaking.
Dr H was amazing except for one thing. For a communications professor, he isn't good at communicating. He rarely answered emails, never used D2L, and half of my work I never got a grade on. He severely lacks in keeping his students updated in changes to syllabus or assignments and grading was very unclear.
Pushes you to be your best, I struggle with doing homework but his lectures really inspired me to do my best.
Doctor H is awesome. Such a sweet man who genuinely cares for you and he likes to have fun with the class and crack jokes! He seriously is my favorite and pushed me out of my comfort zone in the best way. Because of his class I learned to speak confidently in front of people. You won't regret taking him!:)
Never take him.
Great professor! He cares a lot about all his students and the class is easy if you show up.
Save yourself and don't take him. He's weird... I think he's trying to be nice but it's offputting. He emails ALL THE TIME with nonsense. He didn't tell us our grades until the final was over, he posted next to nothing on D2L. Dreaded this class every single day. Weird grading criteria, bro uses his own terminology and expects us to understand.
I used to believe in God but then I took Dr. Herolds class, and I knew no god would allow such an evil man to live among us, especially a professor. He made everyone in class very uncomfortable and constantly talked about his divorce. He also made us go to terrible events outside of class. I did not sign up for that. Avoid avoid avoid!!!
He's a great professor. He's funny and loves to get to know his students. His class is super easy if you take okay notes and review them before the tests. He's also a really generous grader for speeches. Highly recommend
Dr. Herold is probably the worst professor in the history of the world. First of all, why is his name Kelly? Second, he loves to spend all class talking about his divorce, and even makes the students in the class get "married" creepy! He also uses lots of strange words that one one uses. I suspect he must have crawled up from the depths of hell.
Professor Herold is great - he cares a lot about students and makes the class fun. The workload is manageable if you stay engaged. Using Unstuck AI alongside the required textbook really helped me prep for exams and speeches.
Dr. Herold ruined my life. The day I went to his class I knew it would be bad! He made people in class get married, and it made me very uncomfortable. He talked about sex and divorce all the time, very disturbing. He appeared in my nightmares every night I had his class. Terrible experience!
He's a good guy and wants to get to know you. Although he never posts grades on D2L. I don't know how I am doing in the class. His tests are easy and there is barely any homework. Not great at communicating.
Dr. Kelly Herold is evil! I am not exaggerating. I had drop this vile class during the 2nd week of the semester, and have been having nightmares since. I am now seeing a therapist, but nothing seems to help with the trauma I endured from Kelly.
Great professor! He really cares for his students, and if you put a little work in, he'll make sure you get a good grade.
His time management is horrible. He's constantly changing the syllabus and I never know what to expect from the class. He made us put our fingers in our mouth and then try to talk for an exercise. But then he made a gross comment saying guys could fit 2 fingers and girls could fit 3-4 fingers. Whole class was clearly uncomfortable from the comment.
you can tell he really cares about his students. and the class is usually entertaining. and his "marriage" exercise introduced me to now one of best friends. I definitely learned some very useful things in that class that I can and will apply to my life after college. he doesn't post grades on D2L and isn't the best at communicating.
Love him as a person but this class was horrible. Insanely unorganized. No syllabus whatsoever, absolutely no schedule - you are emailed what you need to do 24 hours prior to the next class period, projects change constantly, never answers emails, its finals week rn and we don't have a single grade in the gradebook, I like the book we read though.
One of the worst classes I've taken so far. I took this class to become a better communicator, as I have social anxiety. Instead, he made me feel very uncomfortable and awkward by always making sexual comments. My anxiety actually got worse because of this class. If you're looking for a communication class, avoid Dr. Herold.
The class was so easy, only a few speakers and a couple papers. He's a generous grader on all of them. Would recommend
Probably the best professor you can take for your communication gen ed class. He's a fun professor and the class is easy
I did not enjoy Kelly's class. He's always very creepy and makes strange comments to the girls in class. If you can, take a different professor for your communication general.
I took this class for a Ged Ed class, and I really enjoyed it. His class is easy A in my opinion. You have to give 3-4 speeches and not a lot of tests. His tests were easy, and you got to work on it with a partner. He is hard to get a hold of outside of class that's the only downside. I would recommend him for this speech class!
I took this class as a gen ed. It was pretty easy, only 3 speeches and a couple of exams. He is a bit unorganized and it is sometimes unclear what the assignment is. He is very personable so as long as you do your work and ask questions, you should be fine.
Class was fun and easy. Even if you're afraid of public speaking, it's easy.
I've been seeing a lot of reviews of Dr. Herold on this website that are total misinformation. People writing multiple reviews in one day in the middle of the semester is not normal. Someone is intentionally trying to lower this professor's rating. In all honesty, he's a good professor and the class is easy. He takes a while to grade but he's great
It seems that some people can't handle criticism, judging by one of the more recent ratings. I don't know who that is, but they can't hide the truth. 46 people gave Kelly Herold a 1 star. Of course people write reviews in the middle of the semester, the class experience is fresh then. Some people need to learn to accept other opinions.
He is all over the place and not a good teacher
Promotes his political views which is not allowed and tries to persuade young students to follow his political beliefs. Should not be allowed. Man is all over the place, doesn't even remember his own students' names or his own wife's age. It is a disgrace to the teaching community. Only thing I have learned is to stay away from him.
He's all over the place and really disorganized
A lot of people have said he's disorganized which is true, however that also means he's very flexible and will give you extra time on things. Someone said he tries to push his political beliefs on people which isn't true, he's very neutral. And if you take a class w him make sure to check your email! He'll often say what next days assignment is.
Kelly does not hide the fact that he has favorite students. He showers them with attention and praise, eager to recruit them for any favor he requires in & out of class. If you aren't a "favorite," or your opinions and viewpoints differ from his personal beliefs and bias, he will not give you the time of day. He is also the worst communicator.
So. He is a good guys, funny; however, he did not hesitate to show his political views and disregard you if you did not side with him. He made up a lot of stuff and it fueled his lectures. He also has a really bad time getting things graded and he said a lot of projects and ideas that he never went through with. But he is nice.
