Too time consuming. Crazy amount of work and note-taking for a freshman level class. Professor thinks she is "above everyone" and TA's are useless. OK lecturer but tests are graded unfairly and way too many books to read. Take a different professor!!
I got an A in this class easily. Attendtance is very necessary and it is a lot of notes but she gives you exactly what you need to know for the exams. As opposed to Tillery who I am taking now she was far more organized and on topic. Does require work but less than most other history professors at u of h
professor and ta's are rude. way too many ntoes to take and attendence is mandatory. you will pass but not without serious studying. take another professor and stay away from this class!!!
(Cultural Encounters in Colonial America) Her lectures were interesting and informative, which I liked. She also gives good feedback. The downside to his class is that she only takes 4 grades, and everything you do is an essay. I hate writing, but I still really enjoyed this class.
Welp, she's awesome. I expected a bunch of Great commentary, but wow. You do have to read. its college and above all its a history course. Her lectures were the best I had in LONG time. everyone hates reading something they have to read, so no surprise there. all in all a the teachers on the easy going side. freshmen, just shut up and get used to i
Mandatory attendance. Lectures are pretty interesting and easy to take notes but the work is hard. The midterm and final are hard - You have to prepare for 5 essays and you are given 2 at random. There is a required book to read and an essay on it. Another book required to read but in class assignment (reading test). She curves your grade
GREAT TEACHER! take her! go to class & the lectures are what will get u an A ;] the lectures are very clear and she talks slow enough so you could write down everything! got a A and i am really bad in history..lol
Good teacher but this lady gave me a freakin B+. All tests are essays. She's super interesting and if you enjoy history you will enjoy her class. Just know how to write man!!!
this lady is a great lecturer but her grading is unfare. attendence is mandatory and exams are all essay and super hard...ta's are horrible. Professor Hopkins knows her subject but has her mood swings.
Shouldn't be teaching freshman history at UH. Should teach graduate school history! Tests are all essay and are graded unfairly. Not a very good professor. Take someone else!!
I took her for both the core history classes. She really makes you take an interest in history. Really awesome.
THE BEST LECTURER EVER! I NEVER fell asleep in her class! I was so happy when I got an A on my midterm, just make sure you make an outline and study your notes for the essays! You need two books and a clicker, and you have a take home paper assignment. I LOVED THIS CLASS!!!! The TA's help too! Long live Hopkins, man.
Professor Hopkins is the BEST. She's an amazing teacher who knows how to keep students interested. Attendance is mandatory, Midterm and Final are all essay. But if you took notes, you'll pass it no problem. Would take her again, for sure. LONG LIVE HOPKINS! (:
I hate that she does attendance because I'm sometimes late from my other professor. Her lectures are funny, but her weekly quizzes are over the book, whereas her lectures cover only a few interesting points in the chapter. Essays are graded depending on the lenience of your assigned TA. Must buy a $40 clicker to take the quizzes every monday.
Hopkins is the BEST ever. Though her midterm and final are all essay, she gives one hell great lecture and very thorough and goes slowly so you can catch what she is trying to say. i didn't really read the book for the clicker quizzes, and i still did pretty damn well. and attendance is mandatory
I love her lectures. She's one of those professors that actually keep you interested throughout class, but the class itself isn't all that easy. Quizzes every week, lots of reading, and all the test are essays. Oh, and assigned seats + mandatory attendance sucks. I enjoy her lectures though, just don't take your grade for granted!
Loved her. She's an interesting professor who lectures with a bit of quirkiness. She has the midterm, final, and a take home essay. There are quizzes every Monday, so you have to read the textbook. Overall, she's a good professor.
Lectures are very fun and interesting. Very good information and you will watch a few movies. But the midterm and Final are very difficult. I do no like how she grades and wish the midterm and final wasnt essay style. I rate her as an o. k. professor.. if the midterm and final wasnt so damm hard she would be amazing..
Im expecting to get an A- or Higher in her class. Shes really good just need to STAY UP TO DATE WITH YOUR NOTES. Therefore CLASSES ARE MANDATORY!... The TA's are THE BEST. I love HISTORY!.... Kelly Hopkins make the class VERY VERY INTERESTING. Trust me when I say SHES SIMPLY THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!
Professor Hopkins is an amazing history teacher. She makes class lectures very easy to understand and fun. ATTENDANCE is MANDATORY! Her class consists of clicker quizzes over the readings, a mid term (essay), a 4-6 page paper, and the final(essay). Get to know your TA's because they grade your papers! I would highly recommend this class!
Good professor with good lectures. Mandatory attendance Go to class, take notes, study, and you'll get a decent grade.
Very fun/nice teacher. I've never liked history, but she made it very interesting and easy to relate to. There are two essay tests (mid-term and final), a clicker quiz every Monday, and one essay of your choosing. Attendance mandatory. Take good notes, review them, and you'll do just fine in the class.
only 3 essays for class. the midterm, final, and out of class assignment.if you do not like doing essays.this is not the class for you. overall easy class.mandatory attendence.quiz once a week over reading the book.
Prof. Hopkins is GREAT. You can tell she loves what she teaches and she projects that love into her lectures; they're never boring and always detailed. There is a midterm, take-home assignment, and final (all essays). Class is easy: easy weekly quizzes and she gives a BIG extra credit opp. in the end. overall: GREAT TEACHER. Highly recommended!
Professor Hopkins IS THE BEST!!!!! She made the fall in love with History, no joke.. She explains everything in detail, and goes over everything you will need for her exams.. The quizzes are the hardest part of the class (which are not hard at all by the way), you just have to read the chapters that are assigned.. She looks like she LOVES her job.
PROF HOPKINS IS SO EASY! attendance is mandatory. her lecture is very interesting, and she manages to make the class fun. the students loved her humor. one essay midterm. one essay final. and an out of class essay. the only thing that lowered my grades are the weekly quizzes. IT WASN'T hard whatsoever. just do the reading-READ THE KEY TERMS!!
TAKEN IN 2009- Attendance mandatory, assigned seating checked by TAs. If they see notes are not being taken, your phone is out, or you are surfing the web - then you will be counted absent. 4 absenses and you fail.. it was just like reliving High School, except the class was not a free A. TA graders are assigned based on your last name.. -contin.-
So I absolutely hate history.. and I secretly knew how Im destined to get really low grades in my core classes.. but THIS CLASS! OMG! Im not implying that its TOO EASY. No you actually gotta do what you gotta do but if you do then your A is guaranteed ! ITS SO MUCH FUN I absolutely can't wait for my HIST2 class with her!!
She teaches this class like it's middle school. Needless to say, it's super easy. She gives you the questions that are on the midterm and final. So do them and memorize them. You have like 10 paper options. You only have to do one of them. Not a class to take if you skip all the time. You will fail. Very easy if you try.
Its hard to explain but Hopkins literally made history so much fun!Easy A for this class! and she is so nice! Attendance is mandatory, but you can miss 3 classes and be okay, You have to write one paper and there is a million different chances you get to do that. The quizzes are easy, And the test are SO SIMPLE! TAKE HER :)
By far my favorite teacher at UH. I got a 100 in the class by going to all classes, taking notes and making outlines before the exams. Overall, it's a really straight forward class. She's super sweet and really engaging, so you won't be bored. Make sure you do the reading assignments or the Monday quizes will hurt your average. HIGHLY RECCOMEND
The class is not a piece of cake. There are quizzes every monday and attendance is very important. There is a mandatory essay to do along with an extra credit essay. I did bad on every quiz and still got an A in the class. The exams are two essays with 5 given topics. Prewrite them and you should pass.
Take another professor!
This is a history teacher that really teaches history in a fun and understanding way.
I enjoyed Hopkins. Shes an amazing lecturer! I recommend her but be warned: I usually get high As in essay based history classes. I got a C. The TA who grades essays will annihilate your grade if you arent clear to the point of excess. You have to explain everything you put down in a tedious way. I had to change my writing style just this class. :(
I really enjoyed her class, her lectures were never boring. She is always available to help with questions and very clear in what you need to know. The book is very important, her quizzes are from the chapters. Grading system, i found from her TAs were rather hard and unhelpful. Attendance is mandatory, and part of the total grade. Don't miss class
An easy A if you just study a little before each quiz (from the book), and memorize all your key terms for the test essays. Most of it is just general understanding. It takes an average amount of studying to get an A. clear and interesting lectures. Good teacher for a core class I really didn't care for.
AMAZING! I do not care for history but I wish I could take her again! She is funny and keeps your interest even though the material isn't the most captivating. At first I hated that attendance was mandatory but it is definitely the reason I passed! LOVE HER! TAKE HER!
She is a very good teacher, really explaining everything so that it's easy to understand and actually learn the material. Would DEFINITELY take her again.
she is the most AWESOME history teacher on this planet. she loves to help anyone in need and her lectures are insanely interesting. take her! you will be amused and mentally active throughout her lecture cause she is...
Great Teacher. Very helpful. Wants you to succeed. Bit of reading. Quiz over readings every week. Everyday is lecture. She talks during class and you take notes. Exam is essays that you get ahead of time. Class is mandatory. She wants you to pass so she enforces you to show up. TA's were hot lol but she is a great teacher.
I would recommend this class. It's not easy by any means; you have to actively take notes in class and read a lot, but the lectures are done in every day terms that you can understand. READ THE BOOKS THOROUGHLY. The quizzes aren't that bad if you do the reading. She is always there to help, and the TAs this semester were nice also.
Good professor overall. I didn't receive a good grade because I didn't do the much required readings. She makes history easy to understand and interesting to less interested students. I found myself remembering a lot just from lectures. Just do the work !!
She was a wonderful teacher! She made history VERY interesting. There are quizzes every week over the readings, but they are simple! She takes attendance every class as well, and it is part of your grade.
Best History professor EVER. She is an amazing lecturer who is passionate about what she teaches and makes it engaging and interesting. Mandatory attendance affects your grade ++. Weekly quizzes on reading (easy). 1 term paper (easy). Midterm & Final are essay response with questions given out 1 week before exam date. Easy A if willing to study!
Watch out for her TA's, as they ask for specifics on the essays. Overall Hopkins was very acclimating when it came to some problems that I had in her class, and she is an excellent lecturer. Given that the class is a pre-req she makes it interesting for everyone, but people looking for more depth in the lectures will be disappointed.
A very good instructor indeed but the only thing that is extremely hard about this class is those monday quizzes. That require you to read alot every single week. But she gives out alot of extra credit. (1) 4-6 page essay, a mid-term and a final are all required for this class. But she really is a good professor. The class is hard so be prepared.
DO NOT TAKE if you do not want to go to class. EXAMS ARE IN ESSAY FORMAT where the asks 2 of the 5 Essay questions. Does not have notes or power points available to student. Information is given orally and not shown on the power points presented in class. The projected information is more of a guideline for the lecture and of little help.
You have assigned seats, daily attendance checks, the class I took had over 250 people. If you are not taking notes during class or if you are sleeping you loose attendance points. The mid term and final were hard and essays.
Excellent lecturer. Must go to class and you need to know the material on tests. Monday quizzes are not easy. My TA was not that helpful, in fact, she was actually rude when I went to her for help after 1st test. Dr. Hopkins, however, is a good teacher and I would take her again. Gives you opportunity for extra credit.
Prof Hopkins is one of the best professors I've ever had! She really knows what she's talking about and makes history interesting. Monday quizzes were tough but if you do well on the assigned paper, midterm and final exams you should be all set. Also there's a helpful extra credit opportunity! I definitely recommend this professor! TAKE HER :)
Hopkins presents the material so well where it's easy to take notes. There are quizzes with clickers every Monday over your readings. History is required, and I'd recommend her. She knows how to teach, knows what she's doing, and you should pass the class if you put effort into it. The final exam and essay was kind of hard!
Probably one of my favorite professors. She's a genius when it comes to history, and it's pretty easy to get a passing grade by attending class everyday and taking good notes. Read the chapters assigned and you should do fine for the quizzes. She's an awesome prof and knows what she's doing.
She's such a good teacher. I am very impressed of how she lectures for an hour about history from memory. She isn't very strict if you cooperate with her but there is mandatory attendance and seating assignments but she just does that to make sure everyone pays attention and writes the notes down. The notes are the mainly what you need for your test
She's an Awesome professor. I hate history but she really makes it fun. She cracks jokes here & there so it really keeps your interest. There are weekly quizzes so you need to read the assign pages to pass. You write one paper, midterm (essay),and final (essay). She's really helpful as well. BTW its the TA's you want to worry about for your grades
she's a very nice lady, great professor, TAs take attendance(mandatory). midterm, paper, attendance & final. thats it. TAs are helpful especially Brett.
Attendance. Daily chapter quizzes. Midterm. Final. She gives reviews. Do the reviews ahead of time, memorize, and write the day of test. EASY PEEZY.
Professor Hopkins Rocks. Extremely talented at lecturing and guaranteed to keep you interested. Gives tons of extra credit (DO THE EXTRA CREDIT). If you're taking HIST 1377 you'd be a fool not to take her class. It doesn't get any better. Hands down the best professor I've ever had.
Great Professor! Material is clear from the start, go to class take notes and complete the midterm and final review. Also study for the daily quizzes, if you do so it will be an easy A!!
Took her thinking she'd be easy. Don't get me wrong she's really nice and funny but her tests are all essay and graded too hard for being a core class that I don't care about. I got an A- but I should've gotten an A+. So I learned my lesson and took HIST 1377 at a comm. college
Really knows her stuff, tries to make class interesting, and is amazing. Class consists of one midterm and a not cumulative final. Her TAs are helpful and she is nice, albeit a bit strict. Attendance is mandatory.
She is a very helpful professor and speaks very loudly without a microphone. Her TA's are especially helpful and the lab was well worth it! I recommend you take this professor as a freshman. It is a good experience.
Lecture and lab attendance mandatory to pass. Hopkins only does lectures, uses minimal powerpoints, listen and jot notes, shes good at lectures. Labs mostly group discussion, by TA's. Reading for Lab mandatory, short writing quiz every LAB. "Requires" 2 books, I only ever read book for LAB and carry a high B avg. 2 essay tests,& 2 big papers >=4pg
"Do I need a book?" Well, if you don't have money, just get only DTAP. TEP is only for extra info. Contrary to the other history teachers I had in the past, this professor's lectures paves a different perspective to history, making it all the less boring. as for the labs, be sure to read DTAP and print the assigned documents. EASY CLASS.
One of the best professors on campus! She is very informative of the lectures she teaches. Reading DTAP is mandatory for Lab. I would advise anyone to take this class.
Dr.Hopkins is a great prof, she is extremely fun to listen to. She tells history like a story, very easy to follow, loud voice. Her T.A.s are helpful best one is Brett, he is awesome. As long as you attend class and take notes which is basically writing what she says you do great, lot of room to make an A. Trust me I don't like history I am a bio.
Really enjoyed the classes, worth attending
Took this class my freshman year and it was great the professor makes you interested in HISTORY which is really hard! Got a B+ if I would've gave a little more would've been an A
WONDERFUL TEACHER! I've hated history all my life and I actually enjoyed this class. Take lots of notes in class, do the readings for the lab section, and don't blow off the out of class assignments. The tests are essay format so it's in your best interest to study the given prompts!
She is a fantastic teacher. Her lectures are very clear and easy to understand. Reading is almost nothing. Midterm and Final are essays. She will give you 5 prompts then on the day of the test you have to write 2. (They are randomly chosen). Lab is easy and helps.
Okay, so this is college and mandatory attendance really sucks.. BUT I actually feel like this was necessary in order for me to get the A I wanted. She is really clear on what she wants! Make sure to pay attention in class and take notes. The essays are scary but she gives you the prompts beforehand. She actually got me to learn.
BEST PROFESSOR I have taken in my 4 years at UH. I can't believe I waited till my senior year to take this class because everyone told me history will be hard. TAKE HERRRR!
Beyond brilliant. Never liked History until I learned from this lady. She needs a bravo! =)
Professor Hopkins is awesome! She's really nice, too. Her lectures are interesting and easy to follow. The reading load isn't too bad, about 50 pages a week. Attendance is mandatory, though. When it comes to the midterm, WRITE LIKE YOUR LIFE DEPENDS ON IT! Also, study the review questions and you should do fine. Overall, I highly recommend her!
Great class! Professor Hopkins is funny and can keep everyone's attention. The TA's are great too. They are there to help you get an A. I had Alyson, she was awesome and had a great personality.
Great Professor! But her TA's, like most classes grade the work. If your last name falls between H-P your TA will be Brett Olmsted. He does not grade fair and is not helpful at all during office hours. Very nit picky on his grading. Plus he has the cutest man purse.
Awesome teacher! Lectures are interesting (I hate history!!) and I loved going to class. Extra credit it given out multiple times. Assigned reading for quizzes Monday, about 50 pages/week. A written midterm and final. Do the study guide and you'll pass. Very easy class! Take her!
After taking advanced science, engineering and math classes, this one was a nice break for me. She is pretty interesting and the class is very easy. You get credit for attendance.
She "teaches" her class. Asking questions will help out a lot. takes attendance grade. go everyday to get that easy grade. in all honesty, didn't hardly read the book. just used her paper with the questions to study for the test, wrote essays for study purposes, did e/c work and got a b. she is very helpful. would take her again!
I've taken 3 classes with her. Best teaching professor at UH. Do the work & you should make A/B.
BEST PROF EVER!! If you have the chance to take her, TAKE HER! She will make you enjoy history and actually want to listen to her lectures. Never liked history before taking her. Trust me, click the add button on her class.
The best lecturer EVER!! She makes the course interesting. She basically gives you the midterm but you have to study and look up a few things in order to get a good grade. If you take john for lab you will be fine
Awesome teacher! She is very well organized when it comes to class.. time will fly by due to the fact that she keeps her lectures very interesting. She is also very easy to follow, her test are basically off of her lectures. Taking notes is a PLUS!
6 grades-10%midterm-20%paper 4-6pages-25%final-15%lab section-15%online quizzes based on book-10%attendance VERY GREAT LECTURER, be sure to read, TAKE GREAT NOTES, USE REVIEW MATERIALS, TAs were helpful and she was too. Highly recommended if you promise yourself to take good notes and read. AGAIN, DO REVIEW MATERIALS & TAKE NOTES! I MADE an A+
You get study guides prior to the Exams. 2 Exams: Midterm 15%,Final 25% and a 4-5 page paper 20% of grade. Homework is easy since it is just a completion grade and if you have a lab section it is not that bad. You just have a quiz and attendance is also mandatory. Professor answers all your questions and she makes the lectures very interesting.
the professor was good, make sure to do the learnsmart assignments, but her TA huntington was useless
Hopkins is a great professor. Her lectures tell you EVERYTHING that will be on the tests, and there are only 2 tests: the midterm and the final, which are basically the same. 2 out of 5 essays she shows you before that include 4-5 ID terms. I hated history and struggled during high school, now I love it and know us history til 1877 so well.
Dr. Hopkins is really awesome! Her class seems like it's going to be hard at first, but it's really not. Tests are on the lectures, and going to the labs really helps you out. The midterm and final exam are in essay format, however, she gives you several essays beforehand to help you study. Take notes, attend class, do your work and you'll do great
She is strict about the attendance policy, but it's worth it to hear her spirited and enthusiastic lectures.
Hopkins made HIST a fun class. Attendance was required but the lecture goes by very fast because she is a great lecturer. Class may seem hard but as long as you study (she gives you test reviews), you will be fine. When it comes to grading, it will depend on your TA (all grading in all HIST classes are done by TAs)
Professor is a good lecturer. Her attendance policy is treats you like a kindergartner, though. Her TAs mark you 'mentally absent' if they see you doing anything else besides taking notes. Attendance is 10% of the grade and will hurt you a lot if you miss classes. There is also a lab component that requires a lot of busy work.
I LOVE Professor Hopkins! She really knows her stuff, and she makes class really interesting. If you are willing to do the work for this class, there is no reason you cannot get an A. The lab for the class is easy and interesting if you read. Basically, if you do what you're supposed to, this class is fun and an easy A! :)
I really ENJOYED this class! The way professor controlled the class, her organization, her preperation, and her articulation was AMAZING. shes an awesome educator! If you take notes, you'll make an A in the class. GUARANTEED. her notes tells a story. If you fail this class, you should stop going to college. AMAZING PROFESSOR!
FANTASTIC professor. Thorough, clear, and interesting lectures. She makes history fun to listen to. Don't skip class- they take attendance, and if you're not paying attention you're marked absent! My TA (Brett) was great- very helpful, to the point, but he didn't mess around. Do what they tell you, go to class, study, and you will do well. TAKE HER
Awesome class. Taking notes is super important as her tests are based completely on the notes. You get an incredible chance to get ready for the test as she gives you the possible questions on your test. The etst is easy if you go to lecture and take clear notes. It is a fun class and I would definitely take it again. Remember, NOTES!!
Professor Hopkins herself is a great professor. She'll answer every question she's asked with clarity. She's a fun lecturer that makes American History feel like a fun stand up routine. Only bad thing is the TAs. Learn to adjust to them and you'll be fine. Never skip.... you'll regret it. She's a great, fun professor:)
Hopkins gives such interesting lectures. When she talks it is easy to listen and she is honestly pretty funny. All my friends in her class all enjoy it to.... and they don't even like history. I recommend for sure! She takes attendance as a grade but come on that is easy points. No exams and easy quiz's in her lab. Very good way to get an A!
She treats History like it's a story&I guess for a freshman class that's OK, but it's bullet point after bullet point&the lab sections make it feel like you're being "interactive" when in reality if you speak your opinion&it doesn't match the TAs, you're wrong. It doesn't teach you to be analytical at all, but merely to remember things for tests.
Professor Hopkins is hilarious, she reminds me of Ellen DeGeneres. I used to hate hate hate History, but I loved her lectures, did not fall asleep once. You have to work hard to be able to do well in the class though, that means pay attention in class, and take detailed notes, you'll do very well. I promise.
Hopkins class is really fun, I LOVE her lectures. You will need to take plenty of notes in order to pass.
Kelly Hopkins is such an amazing teacher. The TA's are there to help you, no joke. Her midterm and finals are argumentative essays that come from the notes. She will give you the review 1-2 weeks ahead of time and the TAs will give a outline for how they want the essays. During the labs you must read the book and participate in group work.
She gives great lectures. Doesn't use power points, recites everything off the top of her head. Must attend class and be taking notes at all times. TAs count you absent if you're pull your phone out, sleep, or don't take notes. She's funny and goes through everything in great detail. Write down what she says, attend class, and you'll be fine
Very straight forward. She prepares you for all the assignments well
Entertaining Lectures, don't be late, good teacher, good course.
Professor Hopkins is probably the best history prof I've ever had! I can't explain how much I enjoyed history because of her, and trust me I usually dislike history. As long as you go to every class and lab , take notes during lecture, and study for the two exams you have to get at least a B+! I only got a B because I didn't study for the test!
Professor's lectures are clear but completely boring. Her TA walks around the class the entire class period to take notes about what each person is doing, which detracts from the lecture. If you can take Buzzanco, he is the best history teacher at UH. Avoid Hopkins unless you want to be insulted and not treated like an adult.
cool lady
She is such an amazing professor. She's hilarious and very detailed. Everything in the lecture comes in the exam so listen, pay attention and take notes. 2 tests (midterm and final) Her TAs grade those and you get extra credit. A lot of online work and there is a lab. Overall great class and an amazing professor.
This class is one of the easiest ones I've ever taken. Weekly learnsmarts, one essay, and two exams (both written, with a detailed review & some extra credit) There's also some reading to do for lab but it's no big deal. If you get the option to, TAKE HER!
awesome teacher
Hopkins was a pretty good teacher, i hate history but she makes it not to bad, the bad thing about the class is the TA's. they are like hitlers and the section class is not that great. they grade really hard on the test too which are essay's, and im not that good at writing. i got a B in the class tho so im not complaining to much
For all of those who say her TAs are difficult graders: look at the review directly below me. In about 300 characters there are multiple spelling and grammar errors. Apparently this person received a B. If heshe can pass with a decent grade, you can too. Attend class, stay awake, participate in section, take notes and you will earn that A .
Great class to take with a great professor. Her lectures are fantastic and extremely clear. Online assignments if you don't skip them are an easy 100 (15%), as is attendance (15%). As for the discussion period just show up and talk, and get an A (10%), and do the review entirely for the midterm and final. It is what you make it, but an easy A.
Though she makes the lectures fun and interesting, Hopkins' strictness makes it seem like you're taking a high school class again. Assigned seats, TAs walking around to check if you're paying attention... It all seems very juvenile. However, if you take good notes and listen, you're guaranteed to get a good grade.
If you put the work into her class you will get your A. There are weekly chapter readings which are a bit tedious. There is a Midterm, paper and a final that are relatively easy if you took detailed notes and prepared yourself since she gives the question at least week prior to the exam. Do the work and you will get your A.
Never have taken a more impersonal professor in my life. Out of 15 hours of my classes, 12 were senior-level, and only this class was freshman level. I got an A in every class except for this. I love reading and writing about history, I bore my friends with hist trivia all day long, yet my lowest grade is in her class. Do not take this class.
Professor Hopkins was great and really knew how to make a somewhat boring subject interesting and easy to listen to for an hour. The key is doing the Learnsmarts and taking very detailed notes. It's the only way I was able to ace the essays assigned. She's a tough but very fair grader, put in the work and your grade will reflect it.
LOVED her lectures! It was the first time I had ever enjoyed history. The only thing that I can complain about is the lab. It was basically like taking another class and the reading was extremely boring so I never did it. I would have gotten an A in the class if I actually did it but ended up with a B+ instead. DO YOUR READING.
Amazing professor! She is very passionate on the subject. You can easily get an A if you put in work. Her TAs grade pretty harsh, but is manageable. Have to write essays with specific events. Assigned seating. Overall, pretty good professor.
Hopkins is awesome. Her lectures are engrossing and so organized! My notes basically took themselves. Her grading criteria are clear and it's impossible to fail really unless you're like super lazy. Learnsmarts are easy you can basically take your midterm and finals before time with a study guide. The only thing that I didnt like were her TAs
Dr. Kopkins lectures were so interesting! I have never really enjoyed history until this class. She has a way of creating a giant story out of history instead of just telling the facts how other history professors do. Her lectures are mandatory (attendance is taken) and so are her labs (quizzes over reading in labs and attendance taken).
She is one of the best Professors at UH. Her lectures were interesting, but you need to write down most of everything she says because you will need lots of details to write the papers. The only downside was the lab section, which varies depending on which T.A. you have, other than that it was an interesting class.
The course material is quite basic and she delivers it through lectures very clearly, although some things tend to drag on. Do whatever you can to get extra creditexemption on the mid-termfinal. Tedious understanding of the details will be expected if it is an in-class essay again. The Assistants are very helpful and take the stress out of it.
Doctor Hopkins has a great lecture the you will really be able to learn from. She repeats thing in lecture making it really clear on what you are supposed to know.
Dr. Hopkins is a great lecturer, able to make the same-old history exciting and memorable. However, watch out for the TAs. They're the ones who do all the grading, and it really varies from person to person.
She's an amazing lecturer. Even if you HATE history, you'll find her lectures fun, it's impossible not to be interested. Attendance is mandatory. The TA's are a little tough, but not too bad.
She may be a good lecturer but her TA's are what make the class awful they are extremely though graders and have no mercy. The amount of work you have to put in to pass the class is not worth it, and to get an A it just seems impossible. Don't take it. its not worth it I promise.
(Sports in US) 1 month summer semester. 4 papers :4-5 pages each, 1 due every week. VERY INTENSE! feedback is okay. Textbook and 2 books r NEEDED & lengthy Really demanding if ur taking another summer class or have a part-time job. Nonetheless, I made an A. WORK ETHIC WILL B TESTED! 600-700 total pgs of reading. Chicago style papers, grades fast
I took the course online over the summer; this is a fast pace class. You have an assignment every week and if you are not reading you are writing a paper. Prof. Hopkins makes you work for your grade, I was working full time and taking two classes. You have to manage your time well.
Dr. Hopkins is able to dumb down colonial US history to her students and make them laugh. Her assignments take time and work, but she was extremely helpful despite having over 1000 students per semester. #1 RULE: DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE TO STUDY FOR HER MIDTERMFINAL. YOU WILL HAVE TO WRITE 2 DETAILED ESSAYS WITHOUT YOUR LECTURE NOTES.
Professor, I love you, but please stop treating us like preschoolers. You're always interesting, always helpful and cheery, and I love to come to your class, but having your TA's babysit us in assigned seats makes it an ordeal. We're adults, please treat us as such. Either way, I love you, take her guys! Btw: Native Americans, not Indians
She's an awesome lecturer. You'll definitely be able to understand everything. Unfortunately, her essays are hella long and confusing. I managed to pick the strict TA (Lindsay Drane), and she's a tough grader. They're also really strict about cell phones too.
I love her lectures, like she makes history is fun and interesting. Take her class if you can, she make history interesting. T.A. are hard grader, expect lots of details, but it awesome, lectures notes write everything down so you can used it for your essays.
Professor Hopkins is an incredible professor. Very detailed and kind. However, do not recommend taking her class if you commute. The attendance policy is ridiculous, if you are late at all, you do not get counted there. Assigned seats-very preschool. The TA's are nice, but strict. Participation matters for overall grade in class.
Professor Hopkins is great! I am neutral when it comes to History, and she made me love it! Strict on attendance and being punctual. There are 3 papers for the semester plus the weekly online quizzes and 1 pagers that are weekly for the TA's. (I usually do them in the hour gap between class and lectures). Great & funny professor would take again!
Make sure you write really good notes in Hopkins' lectures bc ur grade is based on 3 major essays and those essays are solely based on your notes. If you have a laptop I really recommend bringing it because then you can type all the details. The TA's are the ones who grade ur papers and they expect a lot of detail. Also there isn't a final
It is important to take good notes. Her textbook is online, and you must get it. You will have 3 major papers during the year, plus small weekly papers (Like, one page, it really isn't bad). Your major papers and small papers are all based off of your notes and textbooks. No external sources. Attendance is part of your grade. TAs are a big help!
Great lectures. Actually managed to get me interested in history. If you show up to class, do the assignments, and take good notes you can get an A no problem.
Professor Hopkins is a good lecturer. I really enjoyed listening to her, you can tell she is really passionate about what she does. The lab portion is not my favorite, you will have a response paper due each week for the lab component. If you like tests more than 4+ page essays, I would advise against taking this class.
Professor Hopkins was great! I typically hate taking history because it's a bit boring to me, but she made it super interesting and she's so funny. She won't take excuses for anything, but she's great as long as you're respectful.
I love Dr. Hopkins! Her lectures are literally the best and she's SO entertaining. Attendance is important because TAs will count you absent. Instead of taking super long tests, she makes you write 4-5 page papers which really isn't as bad as it seems. The TAs were super nice! The rest of the grading is from learnsmarts and attendance! Super easy
If your in the CLASSmates program, then there are only 3 major essays and weekly 1 page responses to the readings. Come to class everyday, take good notes, and complete your work on time and you'll do fine. Her lectures were interesting, and I would take notes on your laptop so you can get all of the information down because she moves fairly fast.
Professor Hopkins is a great, her lectures are like a story. they go in order and are very organized. YOU NEED TO TAKE NOTES ON THESE LECTURES! reason being, she gives you 3 papers to write about referring to the notes and ALL OUTSIDE SOURCES ARE PROHIBITED! she is a tough grader and will give you a zero if you cheat, but class was enjoyable
Hopkins gives extremely informative lectures that feel like storytelling and since her class is only an hour long, time flies. Your grade in the class depends on Learn-smarts, Attendance, 3 Major Papers and Lab Discussion. The papers aren't hard as long as you have good notes from her lectures, she makes all the information you need very clear.
One of the best teachers I ever had. She makes you learn and that is good!!
I had never had such a great experience with a history course, but this professor is GREAT at telling history. It's as if she's telling you a story. I don't know how she does it, but it's brilliant. 3 major papers, learn smarts, and lab participation are super important.
If you like procrastinating ... This is not the course for you. However Dr. Hopkins is an excellent teacher who really prepares her lectures to guarantee that you'll learn. I think she is though but brilliant !! I highly recommend her if you are serious about your studies. She cares about you when you ask for help! TAs are like bodyguards.
Her lectures are prepared all the way to the jokes she tells. This is the best history class I have ever taken. Attendance in lecture and lab are extremely important. Phones are not allowed to be out during class, and if you use a laptop it's strictly for notes. She makes everything clear, and if you have any question she does not mind answering.
Professor Hopkins is amazing. Her lectures are thoroughly enjoyable and interesting. She repeats things so you're not scrambling to get all the information down. There are no tests, only papers and learnsmarts. As long as you show up to class, the class is relatively simple.
Dr. Hopkins is my favorite teacher, she is hilarious and tells jokes to keep students engaged in her lectures. The class requires you to write 3 papers, do weekly learnsmarts and go to a discussion lab. Attendance is mandatory but it is a pleasure to go to her lectures! No phones allowed and laptops for notes only but overall my favorite class.
Professor Hopkins is one of the best professors I have taken. She keeps you involved in her amazing lectures by walking around the lecture hall. She is very kind and cares about the success of the student, which is so refreshing compared to other You do have to work hard, but she makes history haters engaged and entertained about American history.
Her lectures are interesting and easy to follow, but you have to attend because they check for that. Overall good class.
One of the best teacher's I've ever had. Her lectures are always amusing and class seems to be done in the blink of an eye. Grade is composed of participation, 3 major papers, weekly response pages and learnsmarts. the Discussion lab is also really chill. It's a fun class but definitely not a blow off one. No midterm or final.
She was my favorite professor since she made a class that I normally wouldn't like so interesting. Be sure to do the learnsmarts and her TA's take attendance every day. She doesn't give tests but you have three essays. As long as you follow the instructions and don't cheat you will be fine(essays are the most challenging part). Love her
I loved the combination of lecture/discussion lab. There are no actually tests, just papers, so no memorizing! Take great notes and you've done half the work for your paper. Only bummer is that there is assigned seating, but you can make friends in the labs. overall, Hopkins lectures were intriguing and fun.
Weekly essays based on textbook readings, 1-2 pages, very simple as long as you're on top of things.
Amazing history teacher, however don't take this class if you don't like to write, you have weekly one page papers, and your exams are papers. Great teacher though.
I usually struggle in history classes because I find them boring, but professor Hopkins made it one of my favorite classes this semester. Her lectures are hilarious and interesting, and I actually looked forward to them. There are three major papers, and as long as you come to class they're extremely easy to write. Attendance is part of your grade.
Have to be at the lectures because she gives you information you need to write your papers. Class attendance is mandatory, you'll get points off if you do not show up. The History labs are okay, they get annoying after a while because I personally thought the class was pointless. Skim over the reading and write the paper the day before its due.
Have to be at the lectures because she gives you information you need to write your papers. Class attendance is mandatory, you'll get points off if you do not show up. The History labs are okay, they get annoying after a while because I personally thought the class was dumb. Skim over the reading and write the paper the day before its due.
Weekly papers due during the discussion section. These are real easy if you structure them the way the TA wants it. Participation is a grade changer. Make sure to be at all the lectures, you won't regret it. She's a good lecturer, you can easily keep up with what she's saying. Your grade will reflect how much you worked for the class.
Worst Professor in entire College. Done ever take her!!!
She is not that good in the subject and very strict try to prefer other professor instead of Hopkins!!!
Her lectures are boring, She is always moody in the class and also very strict. She always focuses on every student. If she see you doing some other things other than looking her she will low your participation grade. The papers are also not that easy. She always want new stuff but she never know how to explain. One of the worst professor at UH.
Professor is really bad in Subject.
Hopkins may be the best professor at UH, or at least for freshman. Lectures are great and thorough. She may look intimidating but she is a very friendly professor. 3 major papers, no exams, only Learnsmarts and one 1 page paper due each week in lab. Easy A really, just don't miss class or miss papers.
Hopkins is a really good teacher! She does lecture a lot but she makes them super interesting so the time flies by. Her TA's grade everything; there are only 3 major papers. She is extremely understanding so if you have any problems in the class you can tell her, she is pretty blunt though. But she is hilarious and very nice.
Hopkins is a GREAT teacher, and her lectors don't make you want to fall sleep. She's funny, and is very open to questions. On the other hand pick TA's WISELY! They will make or break you. You have 10 1-page papers and 3 4/5 page essays + learn smarts. Visit her during office hours. Curved grades at the end, went from B+ to A-. Take Hopkins!
This class was not too difficult. Your grade consists of learnsmarts, discussion sections with a 1-page paper due every week, in class attendance/participation, and then 3 major papers. The TAs take attendance every class so make sure you are there, and you are paying attention or you will lose the points for that day. She is really interesting.
Awesome! Attendance was mandatory, and every week in our labs we had to write a reading response, but for no quizzes/tests I'd say it was worth it. Her lectures are the best I've ever seen, she makes you empathize with the people in history and sometimes I hate that class has to end. You won't regret this class, even if it's just for a credit.
Don't take her online class. Unclear about directions and tough on grading.
Hopkins has been my favorite professor so far. I'm not at all a history fan, but she was such an engaging speaker and made her lectures enjoyable. She also often had one-sheet handouts with visuals and things to help drive the information home. This class had only 3 papers, one of which was a fictional letter, which I enjoyed a lot.
Amazing and fun lecture. The major papers (3) and weekly response papers need to be taken from textbooks readings and lecture so read up and focus in the lecture. Didn't feel like a burden at all taking the class.
Prof. Hopkins is very passionate about history and she knows what she is talking about. Her lectures are enjoyable and you won't be bored. She makes history very enjoyable, definitely recommend. 3 papers and minimal other assignments.
Professor Hopkins can be a great lecturer, you can tell she really likes the subject but lectures can also get very boring. You have three 4-5 pg. papers you have to write and weekly response papers. I felt like it was a very strict class when it came to participation and attendance. Pick your TA for lab wisely!
Dr. Hopkins is a good professor. It's clear that she has a passion for what she's talking about and is also very well informed about the topic. Attendance is mandatory and you have to write 3 big 4-5 paged essays. There are also weekly assignments due online and you have to write a one page response for your weekly lab.
i LOVED this class. I have never felt more engaged in a class before. Her lectures are so interesting and she tell history like its a story. There are no lecture notes, you listen to her speak and you take notes on that so you HAVE to pay attention. but this method is so effective because i have actually learned, rather than just memorize.
Fun, easy to follow lectures. There are really long papers to write and you have to do a one page assignment each week and the Learnsmart assignments are really long. I had a really good experience with my TA, the once a week discussions with them weren't too bad. Really this class is just a lot of writing.
Hopkins is a chill professor. You literally show up to class for your attendance grade and just listen and take notes. There are no tests, only 3 essays and weekly papers with your TA's. They're pretty chill as well as long as you use sources and seem like your trying, you'll be fine. DO NOT TAKE IF YOU HAVE A CLASS RIGHT AFTER. SHE RELEASES LATE.
Kelly Hopkins is a wonderful professor, very funny, strict, and nice. She's cool af! However, her TA (Timothy Quevillion) is not very educated. He has no idea what he's doing. He doesn't know how to grade. So, if you're taking her class I would make sure to get a different TA (i'm being serious) I'm sure he is a great person outside of history.
Hopkins is a good lecturer, she'll reword topics so its everything is pretty easy to understand. If you get Mallory as a TA she will grade a bit harder than the other TA's, but the class is relatively easy with 3 papers and 1 pager papers a week. The Learnsmarts are a lil tedious but theres only a few due every few weeks or so. The course is doable
Professor Hopkins was great! Very easy class if you pay attention and complete every assignment. Her TA, Timothy was pretty chill- though he looks serious, he is not. 3 papers that are 4 to 5 pages long. Weekly learnsmarts and 1-page discussion essay. NO TESTS. She rounds grades at the end if you completed all work.
Professor Hopkins as a lecturer is phenomenal. She's incredibly engaging and knows how to make a 50-minute lecture feel timeless. Unfortunately, the lab portion of her class is bogus and pointless. Her TA's grade incredibly strict and nothing happens during the lab session. I don't mind writing the papers, but I could have done without the lab.
Prof. Hopkins is one of the best teachers at UH. I took an online Sports History mini-mester over the winter break. The reading was intense but there were only a total of 4 assignments, all being essays; three essays were four pages long and the last essay was an editorial assignment, two pages.
Hopkins' lectures explained the course material and captured my attention unlike any other professor. It is important that you attend class because the course consists of three papers that require you show a comprehensive understanding of the lecture and textbook. With amazing lectures, interesting content and fair grading, I highly recommend her!
Dr. Hopkins is a great professor and she lectures really well. I have nothing against her but she gives way too much homework. A page paper each week, LearnSmarts, and 3 major papers. On top of that, I had the harder TA, Mallory, so even when I did the papers each week I stopped because she would give no feedback on how to improve them.
Hopkins is an amazing lecturer, your grade was based off of attendance, 3 papers and online assignments you completed once a week on sunday. She is extremely passionate about history and cracks jokes all the time.
you want a straight forward history professor, she is your women. she gives no exams but two papers that are easy if done in time. attendance is mandatory but those notes you get will come in handy for the essay. she makes lectures interesting, and is a pretty chill professor
Dr. Hopkins is an amazing professor and I would definitely recommend her class for anyone taking history. She makes lecture very interesting, which is great for a history class, and made it easy for people to get an A in her class.
Professor Hopkins is an amazing lecturer. I never liked history until I got into her class. No phones allowed. Take good notes because there are 3 papers based off lectures alone. Weekly 1 page papers due every week for the lab (super easy).
Great lectures and makes class interesting. Only 2 papers for midterm and final, but in the HIST lab (taught by TA's) we wrote 3 other papers. The 2 major papers were graded hard but lab papers are easy. TA's take class attendance and very strict ab attendance/no phones. Learnsmarts due every week
Her lectures were very good and made history interesting. Definitely not a blow off class, but not too hard. No phones/laptops and attendance is mandatory. Weekly learnsmarts, 3 discussion section 2 page papers, and 2 major essays based off of lecture material.
I loved Professor Hopkins! She was great and made lectures very fun, which is usually hard for me because I hate history. You have group discussions which you have to write a total of 3 papers for, and 2 in class papers. The other grades are learnsmarts. No exams! Easy A for this class. The TAs are kind of annoying though but shes great.
no test, no quizzes , NO FINAL!! just show up and take notes. Class comes with a lab which was 3 times a semester and you turn in a 2 page paper. the lecture had 2 essays also. learn smarts every week.
Hopkins was the most passionate and awesome professor I have had at UH. She only expects you to show up to class, take good notes for an hour 2 times a week, and then write 2 essays. There is a lab that requires essays as well, but TA's are very helpful. Take Hopkins if you can!!!
Professor Hopkins is the best professor, I would highly recommend to take her. We had assigned seating so attendance counted as a grade but her lectures were enjoyable. Hopkins talks the majority of the lecture so be ready to listen. Read the chapters, read the discussion papers ahead of time because they're long, do the essays and you will do good
Funny and interesting lectures, do the writing assignments.
3 major grade essays, a few 2-page essays for the TA, learnsmarts, most of the essays rely on info from the lecture and textbook, for the last essay(biggest essay) YOU NEED INFO FROM HER LECTURES SO GOOD NOTES ARE RECOMMENDED. Overall, pretty easy class. All the info comes from her, not any ppt, gotta listen! COMPLETE LEARNSMARTS ON TIME.
Professor Hopkins is an amazing professor, youre graded by essays in class and in lab and online homework only. She gives feedback on essays to help you improve and keeps the class engaged during lecture. You must buy the online textbook for this class though, but 100% would take her class again.
Definitely recommend Dr. Hopkins, Her lectures are funny and the TA's are great. Lots of papers but manageable. If you are bad at writing this class might be a struggle. The TA's leave really good feedback though so you can improve with every paper.
THIS PROFESSOR WAS STRAIGHT UP AWESOME SAUCE. Easy A. NO FINAL EXAM. A real GPA booster. Just take some notes while ur half asleep and u will do just fine. Just don't forget to do your learnsmarts. Also do your essays and put just a little effort in them to get that A.
Hopkins knows what she's talking about and manages to make the class interesting for the full hour. Attendance is mandatory for every lecture so you better be in your assigned seats otherwise you'd get points docked off (the reason why I received an A-). No tests, just easy quizzes w/ answers online. The downside is that you gotta write essays.
Great professor. Lectures are slightly long but easy to understand. No final exam. Just 2 major papers, lab assignments, and weekly textbook assignments. Take notes during lecture because you will be thankful for them when writing those papers. Lively professor with knowledge over what they are teaching.
Mrs. Hopkins just does the lectures, and she is really nice and funny, great teacher. The grading part is with her TAs. Some TAs grade much harder than others. 2 major essays, a couple shorter writing assignments and online easy work.
I'll be honest, I am not into history whatsoever, but Hopkins made history so easy to understand and actually pretty interesting. I do admit that you do have papers to do and it does take time, but as long as you put some work into it then it is an easy A! YOU WILL WRITE ALOT, but it will all pay off because those notes are basically your essay!
This professor is GREAT. Take her if you want to learn about U.S. history and get your core class done. Great TA's that will help you with writing your 2 essay's that are major grades. Going to class discussions and doing your learnsmarts are also a major part of your overall grade. Take her if you want an A.
I took this class for a 5 week summer course. I'll admit, I've never really been into sports. But this class was very interesting. I feel like I learned a lot about the history of sports and gained a new appreciation for them as well. There's quite a lot of reading and writing, so consider that. Also, lots of watching films that you may have to buy
Hopkins does an amazing job! Her lectures are interesting and be sure to take notes cause you have to write 1-2 papers throughout the semester that are based on your notes in class. While some might disagree, the labs are helpful and depending on what TA you get, it can actually be really fun!
She is an amazing professor! She's really funny and her lectures were super easy to follow. This course had a lab that was included that was homework heavy. But this course had no tests just papers!
I really liked her lectures. This class had a lab and we had an assignment every week. They expect us to submit homework on time but they take forever to post the grades. Each assignment takes about 2-3 weeks to be posted.
She's very straightforward and will tell you you're going to fail, but it's a fairly easy class if you show up (which you should because she takes attendance). Only 2 big papers, but you can source your lecture notes in them so take good notes and you'll be fine.
She is one of the best professors at UH. She is engaging, informed, and always respectful of students and their questions. Attendance is a must and no phones allowed. There are papers you have to write once a week for the lab (which was at 8AM) but its doable over all.
The lab that comes with the class is what makes you work for the grade!! It's a one to two page writing due every week that is accompanied by multiple pages of reading. You also get learn smarts due every week and two major essays. Besides all the work she's a very funny professor and actually made me want to learn.
I loved her class!! She does not do tests but she has 2 major papers. I think this was the first time I actually took good notes in class. She does great at lecturing and be ready to take notes the old way because there are no electronics in her class.
2 major paper assignments, can ONLY choose from 8am/9am weekly discussion sections but they're pretty fun, Derek is the best TA. My issues with the class: WEEKLY discussion papers, only a page long, but it catches up with you eventually, it's a lot of work. If even one minute late to lecture, you lose lecture credit (-4 each time). TAKE NOTES!!!
Amazing professor! Very interesting and funny lectures. No exams, just two essays that are about the information taught in lecture. The only "ehh" thing is the once a week discussion section. Discussion sections meet super early and usually require a lot of reading, but the work is not difficult to complete. Show up to lecture if you want to pass.
Hopkins' lectures are funny, interesting and insightful. Attendance counts for points. Take plenty of notes to use for writing material (you'll thank yourself later). Since she does not give tests, her paper assignments are very important. Keep up with Learnsmart assignments and Lab discussion papers. Participate during Lab and get to know your TA.
BEST PROFESSOR EVER. She has powerpoints but they are very limited on information, so you have to listen. Plus notes are a grade. She explains everything clearly, easy to understand. The discussion session had a paper due every week, but they were simple and kept me doing something. The big papers aren't that difficult either, NOTES ARE KEY THOUGH!
Her discussion classes were once a week and super early. She has assigned seats in the lecture hall and the only notes she technically gives are whatever she says. PowerPoints are there but not very helpful. Write down whatever she says! As she doesnt upload her notes nor PowerPoints. Lots of Learnsmarts and writing but overall its pretty easy
Dr. Hopkins was such a saint this semester! The class consists of a lab with weekly discussion sections due and Learnsmarts! There are two paper assignments for the semester which are graded by the TA! Priscilla is a great TA if you can get her! Literally, the most responsive professor I had through this whole COVID-19 mess. Take her if possible!
Great class. Professor Hopkins is super responsive to emails. Her lecture were awesome. TA can be a very tough grader depending who you gets. No tests only 2 long papers. Theres one discussion class that you have to attend once a week. Dont skip class, she takes attendance and you might miss important point. Overall, I like her face to face class
For online classes, she gives tons of homework which is very confusing and time-consuming. A lot of people have given feedbacks to her but she didn't listen. Even the TA in this class suggests her that she should not give out a lot of assignments like that.
Takes attendance for lecture so make sure you go! We do have weekly lab assignments and learnsmarts but they are super easy. Other than that, we do have two papers due and that is where her lectures really come in so take notes. No final just the two papers. She also offered lots EC this semester. Hopkins was great and I def recommend! Easy A
Make sure you show up to lecture if you don't want points docked. Weekly lab assignments and LearnSmart modules. Do them, they're not hard, they just take awhile to do!!! No exams, just two papers. Overall an easy class!
All of the homework for the lecture portion is LearnSmarts (you have to pay) which is easy. A lot of your grade depends on your attendance. The lab portion is harder in comparison but still manageable. You have to do a weekly discussion post. I really appreciated the professor including the Indigenous Peoples POV and not erasing their history.
I loved her and her class so much! You will not regret being in Professor Hopkins class!
I went into the class thinking it would be boring and dreadful but her lectures are interesting. The labs and lab work are annoying tho.
She is one of my favorite professors she is really nice and lectures are interesting. There is a lab section that requires you to complete 1 assignment each week. They can be lengthy but can be completed in a day.
Great professor! Explains everything fully and is very patient. No test and only two papers which are very easy if u pay attention in class and write good notes.
She's really cool and knows her stuff. The lectures were quite enjoyable for me personally. There is a lab section to this class but even that class was pretty fun too. This was not a class that has anything to do with my major, but I found it very interesting, and even the assignments (there are a lot from lab) were interesting to do.
I went in expecting it to be boring, but it was quite the opposite. She knows how to keep your attention. Take her if you have the change
This class has two sections, lecture and lab. Lectures are not bad but attendance is mandatory. The lab work was always very interesting and educational. TAs are great. Learnsmarts can be a little long and annoying.
The class is fairly easy. It is just a heavy workload that you have to keep up with. Attendance in lab and lecture are mandatory.
This class consists of learnsmarts, lab assignments, and 2 papers. Some of the lectures are necessary and some are not but you need to be taking notes because you never know when she will ask you to submit the notes that you have taken for a grade.
10/10
Took this fall 2021. The only complaint I have is assigned seats and no electronic usage unless allowed. Other than that she keeps lectures fun and interesting. She always encourages participation too. There is no final exam just an essay. Take notes because it all helps you for this final essay. Essay textbook work too( use quizlet lol). 10/10!!!
Prof. Hopkins is amazing. She sends weekly emails reminding you what is due which is so helpful. Gives out lecture credit, so go to class and sit in your seat. Weekly lab assignments, a presentation toward the end of the semester, weekly smartbook assessments, and a paper at the end of the semester. No tests or quizzes.
The workload is fine and manageable but professor Hopkins is not a very understanding woman. For a class with mostly freshmen she's not very empathetic when there an issue and her communication with the TA's is horrible. Good luck trying to talk to her regarding complications with life or your assignment. For this reason I would not take her class.
In a class of more than 150 students she still took attendance. Heavy work.
Honestly, class was super easy and fun. I slacked off twice and it hurt me enough for a B. So stay on top of your assignments. Grading is super easy as well. She enjoys teaching which makes it better for everyone. OH and most importantly. NO TEST
Professor Hopkins' class was entertaining even though there are seat assignments for lab groups. TA's are great, easy class for a high letter grade.
Assigned seats and Attendance. Weekly lab assignments (writing papers due beginning of your lab hour), weekly smartbook assignments (easy), and final paper due at the end of semester. Lab assignments are super time-consuming, but doable. However, Hopkins and her TAs are entertaining and funny, so have fun and listen in lectures. You won't get bored
Very helpful and lectures are engaging.
Prof Hopkins is one of the best Hist. profs I have had in a while. She doesn't simply read off slides but actually tells you a story during each lecture. Connect Assignments are a breeze and you can use Quizlet. Did I mention no exams? Only bad thing is labs which require weekly crap. One of her TAs, Willis, is woke.
Hopkins is great, lectures are fun. The only thing I hate about this class is the lab session. For those with a heavy semester, this hist lab is just ridiculous and time-consuming but is required. Disclaimer, no hate to TAs, y'all are great. Lab assignments are long and not as easy as I expected. Also a presentation at the end of the semester.
Literally just show up and do the classwork. You have to work to fail this class. The teacher gives easy work that isn't challenging. It may be a lot though, so be consistent in attending class cus that's the only way to really fail, I guess. I emailed her about some work stuff and she was super understanding and accommodated me when I had issues!
Attendance is lame, and the lab is annoying but if you do your work it is an easy A, I slacked and thats why I got the A-
Dr. Hopkins' class consisted of two major projects, one group-based and the other an individual paper. She also graded in-class activities and graded attendance and participation. Her lectures were very engaging and included much student participation and activities.
This class was so amazing and she made it fun and easy. If only she would also teach HIST 1302 I would take her again. Enjoy this class freshman cause it only gets harder the more you get into college
Would give 10 stars if I could. Excellent at giving presentations and captivating student interest. No exams, weekly quizzes and a long essay though.
professor loves what she does ! she's amazing at lectures and is great at making students understand the material attendance isn't mandatory but daily lecture credits are and you must be in class to answer them therefore I guess attendance is mandatory, she uses the book of Mcgrawhill 1-2 is due each week, she's also very funny.
she grades her lecture super strictly so beware. also LOVES to give 3/4 on in class assignments for random things. her TAs walk the classroom to note what your doing and seating is set.
Very VERY tough grader. Rarely got full credit on minor assignments always got 3/4 or 2/4, which accumulated to harm my overall grade. Great lecturer but only take her if youre actually interested. If you simply want the credit, just take it online. TA strictly took off points if you are on your phone and more if you are absent. No exams or quizzes
I wouldn't recommend taking Professor Hopkins' lectures if you don't like lengthy lectures. She also has a daily assignment nearly every class and will usually grade them 3/4, then won't explain her reasoning. Her also TA walks around and looks to make sure you're paying attention and will take off lecture points even if you're in class. 0/10.
Please God avoid this Professor. She initially came across as a super nice Professor and as the semester progressed she became so lecture & assignment heavy. She treated this class like it was an upper level course when it was just one taken for credit.
Attendance is mandatory!!! She will give out assignments during class so you pretty much HAVE to be their. The lecture assignment's will be graded heavily even if you only have a short time to complete them. If your over 2 minutes late to class she will make you sit in the back and call you out (she gives out a seating chart). She can be nice tho.
Dr. Hopkins gave no reasoning with her grading. Many times when I worked on a group assignment we would get different grades on the exact same m
Kinda a harder class but you you pay attention you'll be fine!
Thought this would be a hard class with group research project and final paper, but it wasn't so bad. Fun prof. TA's take attendance, and there's a write-up you have to do at end of lecture. Rarely took notes, but you should to prep for final paper. Assigned seating after you get into research groups. Make sure you look focused during lectures.
First, let me start with the fact that there were no exams!! All you had to do was attend class (attendance is graded), participate in the in-class assignments that were never difficult, and complete the group project and essay assigned. Absolutely nothing was difficult about this class, and I recommend taking this Proffessor!
Good professor. Her lectures are never boring
A great teacher that cares about all the students in her class. Is willing to work with you if you work with her. Constant lectures but always entertaining.
Cares abt students, easy lectures, in-class assignments, graded attendance, more homework than average(sometimes it was a lot), no tests(so slay), fair grading, group project(sounds terrifying at first but actually not bad, i recommend writing a script), 1 paper/essay, good ta's. Complete work on time, do it right! JSTOR is good for sources!
great professor but if u skip class alot (like me) its harder to maintain ur grade bcz stuff is graded annoying
Good prof but the class is actual work. Whole semester was a group project + lectures. Weekly assignments due. TA's gave good feedback & took attendance. 1 final paper, no mid term. Easy to talk to, and very passionate about her work. Very sweet and entertaining.
great lecturer but she does wayyy too much with her grading. nit picks on the tiniest things in every assignment! and attendance is mandatory, if u do not show up you will miss assignments that can only be done in class. never got a C in my life til this class either.
Funny professor but the class will take up a load of your time. Attendance is mandatory and I recommend taking notes during lectures since you'll use it on your final paper. No exams but she's a tough grader and will drop points at the littlest mistakes. The group project is easy if you have good groupmates, and is also a big part of your grade.
Professor Hopkins was great, but strict on deadlines and some time-consuming homework. As long as you have a decent work ethic you'll be fine.
I am a history lover, so I found this class fun, mostly. However, so many papers/out-of-class assignments require a lot of writing, and you need to follow instructions to a tee, or you will get points off. There is a group project, but do your part and you'll be fine. Go to class, its mandatory and is counted every day.
took it freshman year but it is Sophomore level because of the amount of work to do. Your grade is based on showing up to class, completing the in-class assignment, completing homework assignments, a group presentation, and a final paper. It is important to attend class every day if not you won't pass. Assignments can be time-consuming so prepare.
My experience in her class wasn't necessarily hard. Just try your best not to procrastinate because some assignments can feel time consuming. Attendance is mandatory, so if you know you're gonna be late or not make it to class at all, email her asap. For the group project, just do your part and you'll still earn points. Overall, good professor imo.
This class wasn't hard, it was just tedious. She will take points off for even the smallest of reasons and in general she makes everything more difficult and monotonous than it needs to be. If you pay attention and come to class (which is mandatory) you will do fine. You could do worse but I don't exactly recommend her either
It wasn't a hard class; just do your work and the group project, and you should be fine.
This class is not difficult if you do the work, but she makes every assignment feel like a total slog. She nitpicks the most minute details of every assignment, and since most are graded out of 4 points, even minor mistakes will result in you losing a quarter or more of a grade for an assignment. She also BARELY gives time for assignments in class
Genuinely one of the worst professors I have had. She makes everything feel much more difficult than it has to be. Her lectures are boring, she takes off points for no reason and the assignments are such a time sink for no good reason. You could do worse, but if you have the option I would stay away. The only saving grace is that there are no tests
Her class is painfully boring. We had almost 300 students yet she gave us assigned seats and took attendance every day. All of the assignments are a waste of time with how long they take. Though, luckily no quizzes or tests. Her TAs are also some of the harshest and most unforgiving graders imaginable and they WILL take points off for anything
I've never had a professor make every assignment feel like a dull waste of time before I took her class. She's not that difficult or the worst out there, but she's great at making you not care about this class from how uninteresting her lectures are. As long as you do the work this class is a joke, but it's a class that will make you fall asleep
Be careful choosing your group members, and make sure to attend lectures for full credit on assignments.
Honestly, I'm not a smart student, and I just showed up to every class and got an A. There are no tests/exams. Just your typical smartbooks, and she does in-class assignments, which you can only do if you are present in class. At the end of the semester, there is a group project worth 25% of your grade and a final essay. W class I enjoyed it.
Just dont take them bro, save yourself like fr
On my commute there, If possible, I would purposely drive faster over rain puddles in hopes that I would hydroplane and never be present in that lecture hall ever again.
Honestly she give A LOT of busy work!!! we have assign seating for the entire semester, a group project ( that she doesn't let us work on in class), attendance is MANDATORY, some assignments you need to be in lecture to get credit, She's not bad but i would avoid taking this professor if i had a do over.
This class is isnt that hard to be honest. If you do the work you are going to do fine. Its just boring and filled with busy work. She also takes attendance and makes you do a group project. Her lectures are extremely boring. I would not take her if you have other options
You have to write 200 words to answer a question that should only take 40 words minimum. She makes doing assignments so complicated by taking off points for no reason claiming you need to "elaborate" more even with clear evidence. Her lectures are boring going over boring topics. Its only 5 difficulty because she makes it harder than it needs to be
Easy course to get an A, but never with this professor. Boring lectures and lots of assignments/essays to keep you awake. She doesn't do exams though!
Pretty easy class
If you already have a large work load pick a different prof. Her assignments are long and all busy work. She's a tough grader and her class will eat into your time.
IGNORE THE 5-STAR REVIEWS!! With over 300 students, there is assigned seating, and the TAs take attendance. The work is not hard, but it is tedious. Smartbook assignment is due every weekend and the other work is graded out of 4 points, making it easy to bring down your grade. Useless lectures and heavy workload. The only good part is no quizzes
Just dont take this class. Very demanding as if we dont have any other courses. Too much homework consisting of ridiculous assignments that are too time consuming. Just take history online.
Don't take this teacher, heavy workload, useless and time-consuming. Assignments given in class. if you miss a class, you get points off your lecture credit and no points for a pop up assignment. Instructions are unclear. The group project genuinely had NO instructions at all. No exams, have a complicated essay due at the end, involves all lectures
Class is easy to pass, stay on top of deadlines and work, and READ DIRECTIONS CLEARLY!! It's easy to get a 100 on assignments, but if you miss one little thing, points will be taken off. She's a good professor, but the class is very work-heavy, so be ready for assignments every week and do not skip CLASS!!!
God awful teacher, unfair grading. Literally grades you off if she likes you or not, boring lectures, didnt learn a single thing.
From my perspective, this professor is generally understanding and lenient with grading. However, a significant problem lies in her failure to clearly explain the project. This lack of clarity has made it challenging for me to grasp the requirements and to find appropriate sources. But overall, good professor. Make sure you come on time!
If you just want to take this class for the credit then DO NOT choose this professor. Her assignments are all boring and tedious busy work that demands 200 word responses for questions you could answer in 1 sentence. Also, the final paper's prompt was dumb and the lectures were boring and irrelevant. The whole class just felt like a waste of time.
Prof. Hopkins is probably the best professor I've ever had! Her class is genuinely fun and the one class i actually got excited to go to. On top of this, her lectures are amazing and interactive. She is very helpful and wants to see you succeed, you just have to take the time to seek her out. Also, check Canvas daily. Assignments are long but easy.
She's evil. Good luck.
Group project sucks, busy work sucks, lecture suck. She randomly makes u submit ur notes and if its not up to her standards you'll get marked down, I regret taking her
Like most of the previous people said, this class is VERY work heavy and tedious. Some of the assignments just felt like busy work that held no value. Like others have said too, she is a tough grader, Make sure you do your top most best in her assignments if you want a good grade. If you already have a big work-loaded schedule, don't take her.
This class can be very easy, but the assignments and workload can creep up on you if you let them. If you do all the assignments on time it's an easy A, she isn't a very tough grader. Lectures can be interesting, 1 big group project that spans the semester, no tests, attendance is part of your grade.
