Taught to the lowest end of the class, leaving most of us bored and uneducated. Extremely disorganized; glad I was not learning anything new, because i would not have understood it. Did not enjoy teaching, unenthusiastic. Easy grade, but worthless/nonexistant information
Easily the worst professor I've ever experienced, although she is friendly, she is the most unorganized person walking the planet. She lost exams, didn't come to class and often did not know where to begin or proceed too within lecture. She should know, even in the biology department, it is not OK to breast feed in front of male students.

Very unorganized and does "dumb things down" greatly. I learned more from the book from her, but otherwise I had no trouble with her. She was helpful with any questions I had...her organization is the thing that keeps her from becoming a good prof I believe.
Unfair to students with deadlines/grading. Does not know how to ask precise questions in homework and then the students pay for it with bad grades. Does not even know what her own policies are for grading and tried to enforce "teams" in lab where if 1 person was absent from the team on the day of presentation, the whole team got an F for the day.

Easy class, but it's quite tiring being lectured to like the room is filled with 10 year olds.
The whole class was so unorganized, she leapt from topic to topic, I didn't learn anything from this women
She would just stand around blabbing and sit on the table, too casual and seemed uninterested in her own lectures.
I took Kelly for both Cell and Genetics, let me tell you this is one of the best instructors I've ever had. She has been of great assistance in getting me a research position. Those of you who didn't like her genetics class, I don't know what you're thinking - she has such great knowledge about that area of biology. Support working mothers!!!!!! Kelly does a wonderful job balancing work and home. And if you ever have trouble, she'll help you out - she gets online to answer questions the night before an exam
FYI - Biol 123 is a dumbed down class. You learn the basics because that's all you need to know for your major, those of us who take the upper level classes are better able to judge how good a professor is at teaching a subject - Kelly's one of the best I've had. She's there to support her students 100 percent. Especially if you're a female entering the sciences, what a great mentor!

Kelly was one of the best professors I have ever had. She was very clear and easy to approach with questions. She gives review sheets that give an excellent overview of what will be on the test. It's not hard material in the first place, but she explains it very well and is happy to clear up questions if you take the time to ask.
Molecular cell biology was a fun, interesting class, and Kelly was always very helpful and willing to answer questions. She really wants students to do well, and will help you succeed in her class.
I absolutely loved Kelly! Her lectures are easy to follow and most of them are interesting as far as intro biology classes go. Her help sessions help a lot especially during her office hours and she's always willing to explain things you didn't understand. I highly recommend taking her!
Get her words mixed up explaining things, sometimes hard to follow
Molecular Biology - Her lectures are confusing and not that exciting ("then this enzyme attaches to this protein, then there is a change, then this protein, etc.."), personally she is very nice and helpful. Fair grader.
Kelly Howe is one of the best professors I have ever had. She is very clear and easy to understand. She is also very compassionate and sympathetic to any personal problems you may have. I'm am so happy that I stumbled into her lecture. If I had to take the class again I would ONLY take it with her.
She was a good teacher! Explained material as good as any biology teacher at UNM. Her tests can be hard. Gave us a take home final that was the hardest test I have ever taken in my life!
Kelly is an extremely good lecturer! she writes everything on the board which really helps outs!! Her homework is confusing and some test questions can be confusing.I really liked her class and found it very interesting. Biology is a lot of work but VERY do able. I m taking genetics with her for sure.
Prof. Howe is a good lecturer. Her strongest point is an ability to use memorable examples to explain things. At the time, they might seem silly but you find yourself remembering them on the exams and remembering the information. The 123 class (for health-science majors) was a little too easy for my tastes but Iwill take Kelly for Genetics.
Good lecturer, she writes everything on the board which is really helpful. She does prepare study guides but after studying with those and on my own I found her tests impossible so make sure you study days before the test, no night before studying, and take advantage of her office hours!!!
Awesome!
Do not take for 202.
Very good lecturer, you will definately learn the stuff. Writes alot so learn to write stuff down fast. Tests come from the lectures so no need for the book.
Horrible Teacher...you can put in lots of time into studying and still not do well on a test. She is very indirect and goes back and forth topic to topic. I DO NOT recommend her. She writes stuff on the board but later when when it comes time to see what she said it makes NO SENSE!!
Good lecturer. Conveys ideas clearly. Writes on board. All good :)
Howe is very nice but I do not like her teaching methods. They are extremely slow and its like if she was talking to kindergardeners, then the test is not really much what she covered because she goes to slow. But shes overall not that bad.
TERRIBLE at giving lectures! SO boring. On the first day of class I came prepared to learn and I fell asleep. Very unclear about most topics covered. She always goes off on random tangents that waste your time and have nothing to do with biology.
very monotone...put me to sleep
The class notes are the most important thing to use to study for tests. very interesting class and was not boring
This class is ridiculously boring... As a matter of fact im sitting in the class right now and her lectures are dry and uninformative. Notes arent very understandable but are commonly put in test questions.
Dr. Howe is very thorough & precise in her lectures. She explains things very easily, which is great for students who are dumb enough to be on-line, in her class, during her lecture, rating her!
She is a great teacher! Her notes are thorough, and her tests are fair. I studied a few days before tests and got an A in both classes. I took her for both Molecular Cell and Genetics.
rocks
Shes a great teacher.. study her notes that she writes on the board. Yes she lectures slowly.. but she wants to get her point across. These students should be happy there is a teacher that enjoys giving silly examples of things and writes on the board. Not everyone is going to learn like you. She enjoys learning and you can tell. Great teacher!
I would NOT recomend this teacher for genetics. She was unorganized, jumped around from topic to topic, the information she presented in lecture was often unclear or contradictory to the required text, and there were many mistakes on the exam questions. Also she was UNRESPONSIVE to e-mail.
I like the slower paced lectures. I had time to write information that way. She cares about students and wants them to learn. She will meet with students outside of office hours and she always replied to my e-mails. Sometimes it took some time. I think that she is a great teacher and cares more than most people.
Poor teaching skills. Do not take this teacher for principles of gene experssion. she is very unorganized and hard to understand because she chews gum while lecturing.
Explains things very clearly and gives great examples/analogies to help you remember. Good about helping students with extra office hours, answering emails, etc. She does go a little slowly but you can tell she really cares about her students learning and understanding the material. Test/HW questions can be confusing but overall not difficult.
Notes were clear. However, her tests are very hard. Puts a lot of the small details on them, things no one pays attention to. Also, has questions on the tests that aren't in her notes OR in the book. Study guides don't help.
She knows her material, and takes her time time teaching it, so you can ask questions and get everything. However, she tends to read off her notes, so class isn't that exciting and plenty of students doze off during her lectures. Still, very helpful with office hours. Just expect some obscure and detailed questions on her tests...
She was wonderful
She is extremely boring, and takes even the most exciting parts of genetics and turns them into a snooze fest. The exams are really not that difficult, but be prepared to teach yourself much of the material. If you like biology, try to take a different professor, she will bore you
I'm so glad Dr. Howe is my instructor this semester. She does a great job of explaining the material, knows her stuff and uses analogies to explain things. I never feel bored in class... just focused. She's just calm. The class I have before hers is taught by a total psycho, so I greatly appreciate her calm energy!
I really wanted to do well in this class, I got an A in all other courses this semester (O Chem, Calc, etc). Nothing I could do to get an A, her tests seemed VERY inconsistent, and changed the formatting on each test. The final was open book and had material I could not find in the book or all of my notes. Very mediocre instructor, sadly. But nice
Loved her! Best teacher I've ever had.
Super nice
I've had Howe for both 201 and 202. She is very knowledgeable and definitely knows how to teach these subjects and make them easy to comprehend. Her exams are some of the easiest exams I've ever seen as long as you've studied and used the practice exam material. She is extremely clear on expectations and very helpful when you need her!
Dr. Howe is beyond amazing, she helps everyone of her students and she is the most friedly professor I ever encountered. I recommend this class to any bio majors interested in cell bio, tests are take home can't beat that
An example of her teaching style, as a math instructor: she teaches you factoring, but you walk into her classroom and find an exam on integration. very inconsistent, lecture material was inflated and not discussed in text or in class.
Her tests did not relate to lecture or the book. I studied for 20 hours for each test only to find material she didn't cover. A terribly dissappointing experience. I don't know how she averaged above a 3.0. My only regret is there isn't another instructor I can take this class from. CNM's instructor is even worse. CNM is usually much better
Pretty boring teacher.
Worst instructor, test did not reflect lecture or book. The homework was not helpful and very time consuming. Stay away from this prof.
Very difficult to follow her lectures. Disorganized-does not present material clearly & DEFINITELY does not follow (sometimes even agree with) book. You end up with information all over the place (some from lecture, some from book, some from ?). Exams full of errors/typos & questions poorly-written. Did not use teacher evaluation forms at end!
Kelly is absolutely fantastic. She goes fairly slowly but she ensure that we really grasp the concepts. She is always happy to meet outside of class for additional assistance. She even met with me after I had completed her class to help me with related work for another class. She is very helpful and clear a subject matter expert in genetics
not a very good teacher!! don't ever follow her practice exams!
Honestly, I was better off studying on my own than attending her class. The practice exams are worthless and it would take her days to email me back when I had a question.
I did not have a very good experience at all. Her homework assignments never related to what she explained in class and took were more difficult than the tests themselves. Disorganized lectures as well.
I've taken her Hybrid course, and I find that she is doing a pretty great job with this class! There are only two test; midterm, and final and the rest is online. She did a great job so far with everything! I totally recommend this teacher!
Not the greatest teacher... What she teaches in class is not on the test so be prepared to receive less than what you deserve!
Useless
The tests were loosely based on the information in her lectures. Homework wasn't always based on the lectures either.
She is detailed in her lectures, but they are very dry and very boring. She does teach like she is teching for high schoolers can get annoying. Her exams though are very equal to the material she gives you so you need to study more.
Bland lectures, the small group presentations were some of the most tedious hours of my life, but her tests were so easy. It's an easy upper level level credit.
Her lectures can be helpful, but most of the time are very boring. Her teaching method is reading off her somewhat empty slides, which doesn't help much. Her exams tend to have the tendency to have material not covered enough in lecture or lab, which can get annoying. The lab is not so bad, but that's mainly due to the good TA we received.
She's really nice and helpful in lecture, but when it comes to the tests it's like the material slaps you in the face. Her in-class questions are really easy but her test questions are a whole new level.
Didn't go to lecture often but instead went to her office hours, which can be better. She is really cool and perky!
Terrible lectures with empty slides. Lecture information was not included on the exam. The hw was gritty and proved to be a waste of time. Caps is always full of fellow bio202 students that are lost. Lectures drag on and on. Reading quizzes are littered with mistakes. Last exam avg 44%. Consider all options before registering for this section.
Overall good class. I took this online, she took forever to open the weeks up. Online is supposed to allow you to work at your own pace, but we worked at her pace which was whenever she had time to do things. Very inconvenient for those of us that have busy lives.
I recommend that students should be engaged during all her lectures. This should cut your studying time in half. I literally didn’t put any effort on studying for any of her tests and still pass her class. Awesome professor, she loves to teach her subject and I definitely got my money’s worth.
Dr. Howe is a good teacher. She goes over all the information needed for tests. Her lectures can be hard to follow because she jumps all over the place. If you pay attention and take good notes you'll be good. There's minimal use of the book, you could borrow it from the library instead of paying for it.
Dr. Howe seems like a great individual, but a terrible lecturer. Her lecture is unorganized, she speaks very softly, and essentially just reads off her slides one by one. Tried using the book to get a better grasp- only good for reading quizzes. TA for the lab is luck of the draw. Doesn't provide clear expectations for exam material.
Dr. Howe is like a mom, she's so sweet in lectures (although very boring) and office hours. A lot of people told me that her tests were killer, but she just tests on the problems she works through in lecture. She does have a problem with being clear in her explanations, but if you ask her to clarify, she'll explain what she means.
She does not email you back within a timely matter. Is not a class where you can go at your own pace. She is not helpful at all. Quizzes and homework did not match up with the book. She takes a long time to grade assignments and is not consist when assigning assignments and when they are due. Go to her office hours, check connect and emails daily.
She has lectures but they don't match the book or what we were actually learning. The PowerPoint didn't provide much information, just a lot of pictures. She would forget to add assignments to the assignment list and she wouldn't respond to emails at a timely manner. The quizzes and the homework doesn't match up with the book. Go to office hours!!
Just like everyone says, the lectures are boring and loooong. Her tests are extremely tough, and she has a way of wording things that make all assignments easy to lose points on. Overall, she's not very clear on the big picture and it's very hard to put together on your own because her lectures do not follow the book. Boo.
TERRIBLE!!!! LONG lectures, unclear. Misleads you with questions (i.e. easy to miss points on everything), and if she miswords an exam question you only get credit back if you dispute it as soon as it's returned. Final was extremely difficult, and comprehensive. Not worth your time, unless you like boredom and C's on your transcript.
Good at explaining, well structured class. Proportionally difficult tests. She's so nice as well. She seems like she's there for you, which is hard to find nowadays.
Doctor Howe is a great professor if you're taking genetics at UNM take it with her
She is a good, not great professor. Fair and easy going.
Dr. Howe really knows her stuff. There is a lot of work in this class, but it keeps you on track. Her tests are hard-ish if you don't do any of her assignments, but there is extra credit built in so its not too awful.
Kelly was a very knowledgable professor. Her lectures were straight to the point and the class was set up so you knew exactly what was expected of you. She was also very helpful if you had questions. Don't get me wrong, I worked hard in this class, but just go to class and pay attention and you will get a good grade.
I've heard people say that she's a bit boring, but she IS NOT. She's funny and a very good teacher. Her lectures really helped me understand the textbook. She's really big on active learning and group work so make allies. The examples she gives in class are really helpful as well. Tests weren't too hard, but studying was still required to get an A.
Great professor. Really knows her stuff and is very helpful, but the material is confusing. She kind of goes on tangents and it's hard to follow in class. I spent a lot of time in her office hours and going over material on my own because it's just kind of confusing sometimes. Tough class and tests are hard but I got an A.
You MUST read in this class. She is very helpful in her office hours. Her lectures are long and I got nothing out of them and had my friends carry me through her "Assesments." If I had to go back, I would most definitely read the readings she assigned us AHEAD of class so that when I did come to class, every thing would have made sense.
I really enjoyed Kelly! She wants students to focus on applying the concepts in order to make inferences rather than just memorizing a bunch of facts. So study by doing practice problems first and foremost. Her test/homework questions can be extremely vague but if you just ask her to clarify she absolutely 10/10 will. She's always willing to help
Dr. Howe starts the semester off with easy material and lots of support, but the second half of the semester is confusing. Her 4th exam is unfairly difficult compared to the other three exams, and the material from the first half is so simplistic and slow-moving that the second half of the course seems like a completely different course.
Everything is done on mastering Biology which means Q U I Z L E T!!
her tests start out pretty reasonable and as you go along in the semester they become ridiculous and confusing. She loves to put unrelated material on the exams( particularly the final). If you want to actually understand the material i would recommend going to caps and the SI office hours.
I really found Genetics to be an interesting class. I really did not like her teaching style toward the end of class. I passed the first 2 exams with A's and then by the end of semester, her exams were very confusing and her lectures did not help. Get ready to do lots of homework for discussion! An assignment is due every week, and they are long!
She's an excellent teacher and uses good examples. There are lots of assignments that can get confusing, but her tests are very clear. Just make sure you take notes on what she lectures in class!
Her homework, reading comprehension, assessments, and exams are confusing because of her wording. I've missed test questions because I didn't know what she was asking! She is nice and tries to help, but fails to explain things clearly. It's weird taking notes in her class, as you do practice questions most of the time, which is somewhat helpful
Decent class, not hard but tests were difficult to understand at times. I did all the reading, but I know many didn't and I'm not entirely sure how much it helped.
Fairly easy, if you understand how genetics and how DNA replicates, know the concept and vocab you're great. Reading quizzes but very manageable once a week. Some group work but mostly discussion. I missed a week once and did not suffer, end is tougher but nothing to worry about. If you find it hard honestly might want to switch your major.
She was an okay professor, she knew her stuff. I am not fantastic at genetics so I struggled.
Dr. Howe really knows her stuff and is very willing to help. If you come to lectures and study hard you will do excellent. Remember: come to lectures! What she covers in class is exactly what she tests on and some of it is not in the textbook. Overall great class with a great teacher.
I came into this class loving Biology! But, now I am considering changing my major. She was a decent lecturer but her tests were outrageously hard! I barely made it through the class! If you can take anyone else for Bio 202 do it! I took Organic Chemistry alongside this class and I actually enjoyed that way more and received a much higher grade.
Dr. Howe is very intelligent and knows her material. She breaks it down in a simple way that is easy to understand. Her tests are a different story. They are extremely confusing and dont make a lot of sense. Make sure you know your material front and backward if you take her.
Dr. Howe cares about her subject and gives relatively interesting lectures but her tests are riddled with tricky questions that loosely relate to the facts covered in class.
This class is super easy, and its all online! Every single assignment/test you do is on my biology lab, and every answer from the tests is on quizlet. She is super nice and gives lots of reminders of when things are due. She isn't very helpful though when it comes to mybiolab. All in all she is a great teacher with little work at all.
Dr. Howe is the is the most caring prof I've had at UNM! She explains confusing concepts clearly and always reviews. She lets you know exactly what will be addressed on exams, and is always willing to clarify (because her questions can be confusing). Exams are mostly over her lecture slides, and her practice exams are very similar to actual exams.
I made the mistake of mainly relying on lectures for the first half of the class, which is why my grade was lower than I hoped for. She gives pretty good lectures so that the material was understandable, but the tests had little to do with her lectures. If you want to pass the test, read the book. Most questions are from book but really specific.
Dr. Howe is a very approachable person. She gives you a lot of resources on Learn outside of the text and slides. BEWARE: her final is brutal. I went into the final with an A and ended the class with a B+. Her lectures are clear and in class activities help a lot.
Dr. Howe is one of the better professors in the BIO department. She is motherly and approachable. Her exams are very much application and are TOUGH. You have to study super hard and have your fingers crossed your TA is good.
Dr. Howe is an amazing professor. If you get lost she is more than willing to clarify. She is very sweet so don't be afraid to go to her office hours or ask questions. She really cares about her students. I would 100% recommend taking her for 201L and 202L. Her analogies are very helpful. Make sure to study for tests.
Never went to class. All the material is in the book except for the last chapter on Recombinant Technology. I took her for 201L and 202L. Her tests were not super surprising. They were very convoluted though and hard to understand what she was asking. No scantrons. All free-response and multiple choice. Finals were very long.
Dr. Howe is one of the few professors that I consistently went to office hours to see. She was extremely approachable and actually helped you understand the material. Her lectures are great and informative but you must use all of your resources for the exams. Her exams are difficult but not impossible to pass. Using the textbook really helps!
I consider Dr. Howe to be the mother of Bio to me. She's very helpful and gives informative lectures. Do her study guides, all of them, while you keep up with the readings. They prepare you for the exams. I printed them out and filled it in as I read along. She does have an odd way of phrasing, but once you get used to it, it isn't bad at all.
Would definitely recommend this professor. She's approachable, thorough in her lectures, and made the weekly quizzes open book. She cares about the students in her class.
Sometimes homework assignments were hard to understand what she was asking. However, if you follow the study guide you will do great. She is the most approachable professor in the biology department. Super nice
Dr. Howe is super approachable and explains concepts really well, but unfortunately she always cancels her office hours so if you don't understand a concept in class then too bad. Her exams are also really hard because she often asks detailed questions that she never really discusses in class. This is a hard class so prepare to study a lot.
The professor frequently anthropomorphizes chemical reactions, docent know many questions, looses track of time, and unorganized.
Great at lectures, but difficult tests sometimes.
I love love love Dr. Howe! She's probably the best professor I've had in the bio department as well as UNM as a whole. Very thorough, always connecting concepts with great examples. She's funny and quirky and very understanding but still strict enough. I can't wait to take principles of gene expression with her.
She's a nice lady but her wording on tests and homework is HORRIBLE!!! Watch out for this because she doesn't like to change questions/answers for you. Also watch out for the Genetics projects she does, she piled it on at the very end of the semester and trust me, in addition other classes or Dr. Joo's work its going to be a lot.
There are a total of 8 exams which are every other week. They make up 50% of your final grade. She will give you a reading guide and a study guide for the test. They do not end up correlating to what is on the test my recommendation is if you do not waste your time pick another professor. Her class is very disorganized.
This class is very lecture heavy and hard to pay attention to. The tests are worded strange and hard to understand. The material is over packed and you never understand what will be on the tests. Her study guides are overbearing and the practice exams are not beneficial. I would not take this class again in a million years.
She's not a bad teacher but the way the course is set up it is very difficult to maintain a good grade since the tests are 50% of your grade and super hard. you need to spend a lot of time outside of class studying for this class otherwise you will easily fail. DO NOT TAKE HER.
Never had an instructor who taught so well! However, the exams are practically an entirely different situation. Using text and lectures covers homework, but exams hardly cover what is taught in lecture, lecture videos, and textbook. Even using outside resources did not help like khan academy and YouTube. She also has a monopoly of the core bio reqs
I took Genetics with Howe and did not enjoy this class at all. Her lectures are painfully slow and have nothing to do with the tests she gives us. I don't recommend going to lecture or even watching her recorded lectures. The tests determine your grade and the info for them is all in the textbook. I had to teach myself most of the material :(
Hands down the worst science prof I've ever come across. She teaches like we're in middle school. Her wording is very unclear on the HW and exams. Exams are not based on the lectures. Basically taught myself via the textbook. And I repeat, the wording is so off on HW and exams although her English during lectures is normal. Would not recommend her!
Dr. Howe is a super kind and caring woman. However, her wording on tests, HW, and quizzes is SO confusing. It's really hard to tell what she is asking. My recommendation is to watch YouTube videos explaining things (Mendelian genetics, DNA replication, etc) instead. She also does not respond consistently to emails.
With respect to all the bad ratings, I'm unsure of how Dr.Howe was as a lecturer in previous years. I had Dr.Howe for genetics and she was always open to meeting with me aside from office hours to assist with the questions I had, she did this multiple times and clearly explained anything I was confused about. I highly recommend her and Dr.Joo
Amazing professor! She really cares about us and succeeding in her class. She listens to feedback and gives opportunity for extra credit, also one of the few professors that is easily accessible and offers lots of study groups outside of class. It is very easy if you are able to take good notes and listen actively to her lectures.
Prof is kind- always willing to answer questions & offer opportunities for students to succeed. Use the subject study guides she posts and find quizlets online to study for the mc tests. There is hw bi-weekly, in class collaborative quizzes (dates given in advance), and weekly reading quizzes on Canvas. Not too difficult if you've taken bio before.
Lectures were rushed and it was difficult to keep up with them. She would take additional notes on a piece of paper and immediately take if off the screen, not giving time for students to write it down or take a 5 second look. Pretty average professor, I learned everything through YouTube videos. Her wording on assignments and exams is terrible.
Lectures weren't bad, I just didn't take notes on anything. I watched videos outside of class and still ended on an A+. She's pretty cool, the content is super interesting to me. Just make sure to know everything on her slides because she pulls questions from those. The final exam was also extremely easy. Howe is a little above average I'd say
Dr. Howe gives you detailed study guides and practice exams. She also has you work problems in class that are pretty similar to exam questions. She didn't always respond to e-mails but I just sent them again and she would finally write back. The lectures were interesting and she cares alot about students.
The 1140 class is so interesting and she knows so much stuff. It's hard to remember all of it though. I'm failing exams but doing good on the other assignments so the grade seems ok. I love being in the class and learning so much. I wish I was a biology major now.
Dr. Howe is not too bad. She is kind of a boring lecturer, but she is pretty clear and most of it makes sense. She is super nice and helpful. The homework and reading is not too bad, but the tests are pretty difficult.
Awesome lady! Fun lectures and will engage with students by sometimes having demonstrations that use students. More extra credit options than regular assignments. Very easy to get an A and supplies many test reviews, both at your pace slides as well as zoom reviews.
I personally adored her. I found her introductory course accessible and comprehensive, and her lectures made a lot of sense to me. I highly recommend her for beginner classes, but I can't speak for her higher level courses.
Dr. Howe is very caring but her class was overly difficult. There were 6 tests throughout the semester and the tests often asked questions that were of much higher difficulty than what was covered in class. You will do good in the class if you spend hours studying. Her lecture slides were also difficult to understand.
Dr. Howe is very kind, and her experience as a lecturer is evident. We had 6 exams with the lowest being dropped, and every exam had extra credit opportunities. The amount of extra credit varied, with the lowest being 2 points on the exam to 7 at the highest, and each exam is 40 points. If you go to lecture, and simply pay attention, you'll do well
Professor Howe is a good lecturer. If you show up to class, take notes, read the book you'll definitely get an A. She also gives extra credit and tries her best as a lecturer. You can tell when a teacher cares, attend her OH, the TA, and SPF and you'll do fine. The workload was reasonable but attend lectures.
Dr. Howe is very passionate about her topics. Slide shows are pretty vague so you should go to class and take notes on her explaining the topics. She moves EXTREMELY fast in lectures but has good explanations. There are 6 tests but one gets dropped and she has extra credit usually before and after each. Super easy to pass, go to TA hours as well.
Dr. Howe was really approachable and provided a wide variety of resources for students to help study. She posts study guides that prepare you well for the exams in the course, and drops your lowest exam score at the end of the semester. Take advantage of the resources she provides beyond attending the lecture, and you will learn so much.
LOVE LOVE LOVE this women. she made everything so simple and easy to learn. explained everything in great debt and really tried to get you to understand. she is the sweetest too. I am not one to retake a class ever but I would retake this in a heartbeat it really really started my love for bio.
Kelly was a very caring professor who wants you to succeed. Gave lots of chances for extra credit. Show up to class and go to TA sessions and DO THE REVIEWS
Expects an insane amount of weekly reading. I would suggest taking only this class and the lab if possible. The amount of work is not that of a class meant to be taken with multiple classes. The test questions ask very specific questions that you would've had to read the material multiple times to remember as they are not based on understanding.
Kelly is a really good professor and made molecular and cellular bio really interesting for someone interested in other parts of bio. The exams where very difficult but she offers a lot of extra credit. Just show up, do the exam reviews with the TAs and do the weekly reading quizzes and you will do good.
Six exams throughout the semester, which can be very stressful. She was kind and offered lots of extra credit opportunities, which really helped my grade. She wants to see you succeed and gives you the opportunity to do so.
I thought that she was phenomenal. If you redo the questions on slides and use study guides you will be fine on tests. And participation counts a lot and you just have to be there and participate for the grade. I finally go to class.
LIVE LAUGH KELLY HOWE!
Dr. Howe is passionate sweet person. Her assignments were clearly laid out. Wonderful lectures, but need to be supplemented by reading textbook bc some test questions weren't in the lecture. Gives good answers to questions asked. Great after-class study sessions. Doesn't accept late work
Dr. Howe's BIO2101 class is a solid but demanding course. The lectures are clear, and extra credit opportunities can help offset the difficulty. Using unstuckstudy alongside the textbook is a great study strategy for acing the exams.
Dr. Howe is honestly the best instructor I've ever had in any subject. She teaches fast, but pulls material straight from the lectures for all of her exams. Reading is heavy-ish but never takes more than a few hours. She also offers a lot of extra credit. You can tell that Dr. Howe genuinely cares about her students and wants to see them succeed.
Best professor I have ever had. I had a horrible experience at UNM but her character and teaching skills would 100% encourage me to come back. She is extremely caring and compassionate.
She is very compassionate and motherly in her lectures. However, her lectures are almost useless as she only reads off PPTs that are hard to comprehend. Study a lot and utilize the textbook and MasteringBiology as her exams are based on that, and the exams are much harder than the coursework. I do not recommend her class. Unnecessarily difficult.
I took Dr. Howe's BIOL2101, and it is quiz and exam heavy but there are SO many opportunities for help, Kelly is so caring and easy to talk to. Her lectures can be a little spacey, fast paced, and hard to understand, but she gives so many resources if you show up to class and prepare for the exams you will be good. drops bad grades too
Dr. Howe is a caring professor who cares for her students' success. There are 6 exams throughout the semester, but she gives a lot of extra credit opportunities and drops the lowest score for one of the exams. I suggest reading the textbook and using the study guides she provides as well as any outside resources in order to do well in class.
Course is reading-heavy, but your only homework is completing a weekly reading quiz. Lectures are mostly summaries that move fast and typically don't elaborate further than the readings do. Despite the caring nature of this professor, the study reviews were often close but not accurate to the exam material.
She is an amazing professor who truly wants students to succeed. You get multiple reading quizzes and lecture participation grades dropped and a 1/6 test scores dropped. The tests are difficult but manageable. There are plenty of learning assistant office hours each day and study guides are provided for tests.
She really cares about student success and drops your lowest exam score, and gives extra credit AND curves all exams!! Lectures cover only the base material, the exams are mostly based off the textbook so make sure to study the textbook more than anything else :) amazing prof overall though
Awesome professor. Lectures are synthesized from the text, meaning the text is largely not needed (I didn't open the textbook all semester). Best 5 of 6 exams; no final. Score high on the first 5 and you can no show the last 3 weeks of class. She's super kind and helpful and gives a lot of extra credit. Material is tricky - use Anki as a study aid
Kelly Howe is a great biology teacher. She actually takes time to explain everything in depth. 6 exams sounds like a lot but they're fairly easy and she gives HELLA extra credit opportunities. Only 1 online quiz due every week and a few discussions. Had a 102% in this class the entire time. She is amazing and really cares about teaching. Loved her.
This class is difficult but if you study enough you will do well. She gives TONS of extra credit. Beware the last two exams are definitely the hardest so study hard for those ones. Overall a very good professor I recommend.
I took Howe for genetics. Great lectures. She had the exams set up to be half group work, half solo. During the group work section, the students who didn't show up to lectures were totally lost and asking those of us who did show up how to do everything. Just show up to lecture and study the concepts and you'll nail it. She's nice and helpful.
Nice teacher that was willing to listen to student feedback and fair grader. I didn't feel the need to open the text book as the lectures covered all material that was on the exams. Weekly quizzes were easy as long as you pay attention.
Dr. Howe was a very good professor i had not payed attention to originally. Towards the end of the semester I locked in and realized how good of a professor she was. As long as you attend class, you will pass. Lectures use much of the books material.
Dr. Howe is a very good lecturer, but goes sorta fast through material. 6 "unit" tests with 1 dropped: no final (which is AWESOME). She cares about biology and it shows
Kelly was great! This class can have difficult content at times, but the tests are not very difficult if you study. Take advantage of the peer tutor hours, they are very helpful and do reviews for the tests.
A very easy class of u show up or just review the slides. 4 missed classes allowed, 2 dropped exams out of 6. Always offers extra credit. I didn't read the textbook and did just fine.
Dr. Howe is a very nice professor and she gives her students many opportunities to pass the class with clear grading criteria. There's a lot of reading and quizzes, but as long as you attend lecture and do the readings you'll be fine.
