Nice guy, intimate class vibe, very helpful and clear... I struggled with the material but ended up with a fine grade in both classes. He's available outside of class and people tend to camp out outside his office to get his help. He's willing to help you out and teaches VERY well.
He's pretty funny... but you have to bring questions to class or he thinks you know it and gives you a test.
I liked his teaching style. Went over the information fairly slow giving lots of detail. He seems to care alot about the students and is willing to help you out if you are struggling. Do not expect him to just give you the answers when asking for help, he ends up pulling the answer out of you.
He is a great teacher. Nice, easy to understand. Very fair. I'd recommend him.
hes rude and pompous, he doesn't want to give students any information or one on one and expects you to pick it up on your own. He will ask you to do problems on the board that he hasn't gone over and if you can't do it youll be expected to sit there until you can.
He was a great teacher for me. He understands how to teach students who struggle with math. I'd recommend him ten times over!
He is not very helpful. He has a way of making you feel stupid and like you have no business being in his class if you have questions.
Hard to recive a good grade on his grading style. He grades on two things:Quizes and Tests. For his quizes he picks the hardest problems from your homework and expects you to get 100%.His tests are some new problems but basically questions you didnt get correct on last test. Better be prepared to ask ALOT of questions and hope he dosent blow you off.
He is understanding and willing to take the time to help students who are willing to ask. I had him last quarter and since I have to retake 92 it will be thankfully with him.
Very fair and clear teacher, as long as the student knows what he expects, there should be no problem passing, Anyone who says hes a jerk and such is completey wrong and apparently they didnt want to take the time and effort to pass his class and paid for it, easy pass if you do what you are told, VERY RECOMMENDED (and im a D- math student!)
Sounds like Tom Hanks. Enough said.
Best math teacher I have ever had. He makes it fun and is more than willing to give you one on one assistance until you understand everything down to the last number. I miss being in his class!!
Great instructor. I took his class several years ago and still remember him as being the best in the math department at SCC. He really cares if you do well.
He was very helpful, and I understood everything he tried to show us!
Not very clear and goes through problems quickly. Answers some questions more clearly than others. Gets frustrated easily.
I honestly don't know how anyone can complain about him, he'll work until you understand. They must have an agenda or just hate life. He's fun, helpful and makes things clear etc.
if you don't understand the math he sort of makes you feel stupid. He assumes that everyone is on his level of thinking, but we are not because that is why he gets paid...TO TEACH US! also, don't bother buying a book, we did not use it once...yeah $100 later...he also makes you do all this homework but refuses to make an answer sheet..
Great teacher, Gives fun problems. and is willing to talk about stuff a little above the class if asked.
nice guy, but if you are not good at test taking he's not the teacher for you. his grading is based only on tests. sometimes covers topics too quickly. again, not a bad guy, just a difficult teaching style to learn from.
For all of you that are leaving comments like "he makes you sit there until you get the problem right" remember, you are in college and are able to think for yourself now. You don't have to do ANYTHING. He isn't going to call your parents. Anyway, he has a great personality which makes the material fun to learn and is very patient...and funny!
Pay attention and do the homework (even tho he doesn't check it, it helps YOU!) He will explain how to work the problems if you ask and then PAY ATTENTION! Anyone would get irritated when asked the same question multiple times that have just been answered. For those that complained about not using the text book, it did say OPTIONAL.
This is the worst math teacher I have ever had! He loves to give us problems that are a million times harder than the ones in the book! He does this because they are "More fun":-( I have repeatedly heard disparaging remarks about him from the nice folks in the math lab. They even have a hard time answering his questions! HE IS THE WORST EVER!!!!!!!
I somehow managed to earn an A thus far, but have no idea how I did so. This guy is something else. I would not recommend this teacher to anyone!!!!! He seems like a nice guy outside of class, but in class he loves tormenting his students.
This is my second time taking a class with him and I think he is great. If you think his class is hard, it may be but he is just preparing you for the next class, which I appreciate.
I honestly think he is the BEST math teacher I have ever had. It's so hard to actually get a good math teacher these days. A lot of people don't like him just because he doesn't dumb down his materials. This is college people, get real.
Took this guy for another math class and was absolutely stoked to find he was teaching this one. LOVE his teaching style, he loves what he does and does a great job explaining material. Slackers find another class.
Awesome teacher. Honestly, read the syllabus and you will be prepared for his class. It is fast paced and based on skills you should already have for that level. He is willing to go over ANYTHING you need, just ask. He grades tough, but fair. He lifts up those who struggle, and pushes the best onto perfection, he provdies all the tools for success!
What can I say, I love Kelly Jahns:)
Had him for Math 99, too, and both classes were enjoyable because he's a nice, uplifting, funny guy, but he does gives out some difficult problems- only because he wants to challenge you. If you need any help with his problems in 99 or above, you may want to ask the higher-math tutors for assistance and not necessarily those in the Math Lab.
Nice guy and he was very helpfull, but if you are really not good at taking tests I wouldn't take him.
Great Teacher! Very clear, great test, funny! Our Calc LOVE him! Kelly is the BEST!
Had Kelly through all of calculus. He has the rare gift of being clear in the way he thinks and presents problems. Occasionally, we do a lot of HWK and projects, but everything assigned really helps you learn the material. He is very helpful if you do your part. I feel well prepared to go to WSU and apply my "iron strong" math skills.
If you have ANY trouble with math, this is not your guy. Run, don't walk, to someone more willing to go just a little out of their way to offer extra help and understanding.
This teacher was very rude and not uderstanding. He tought his math 91 class with no book and no answer sheet, so no way of cheacking your answers, If you did not understand something and would ask him a question that HE thought you should know he would be very rude and say stupid comments (like you should know that already) Also if your not good w
Funny and nice! He is willing to help you with any questions you may have. His quizzes are easy and his teaching is clear. But if you need a text book to keep up then he's not you guy. But I enjoyed him and will take his 92 class next quarter.
Love his teaching hated his test seemed to be at a level much higher than the book. I struggled all the way through his class and am looking forward to never having him again. While he is very funny and nice and really knows math his text were terrible and confusing.
Awesome teacher and nice guy. Keeps class interesting. Stay engaged and do the homework. He will work with you if you try and work for your grade. Gives great advice and knows the material. Study groups are beneficial, dont be too proud. Would definitely recommend taking his class.
He can be very rude at times. He also teaches at a higher level. No book. No answer sheet for the homework defently wouldnt take him at again
He teaches at a very high level and really doesn't care whether you're left in the dust. He's definitely rude at times and he expects you to know it all prior to his class, which makes no sense at all. I would not take his class again.
Freaking awesome teacher! Really difficult class, but he has a lot of mercy (extra credit or test helps). Teaches really well, and helps you with homework. Get ready to work
Shes awesome
He is a great teacher!!!Really helpful and explain everything very clear!!!!
Kelly is a fantastic math teacher, honestly one of the best I've ever had. He does make you work hard, but his enthusiasm for what he teaches really shines through. You will definitely need to study, but he is willing to help you out and spend time explaining things to you if you are having issues. I would highly reccommend him.
Love Kelly!! He is wonderful and explains everything really well. I like that he just creates his own homework (which is semi-optional), saves $$ on buying a text book. I hated math before starting class with Kelly and it is now my favorite class of the day! I would recommend Kelly to anyone. I will definitely be taking 92 with Kelly next quarter
Kelly is one if not the best teacher i have ever had for math, he explains everything and will go over things with you if you need him too. he does homework quizzes which defiantly help your grade. AWESOME!!!!!! i would say defiantly have him as your instructor if you can.
Kelly is one of the best instructors I have ever had. He knows everything, I swear!
I didn't like this class much because Kelly made the exams harder than what was in the book. I did and understood all the homework from the book(which wasn't graded) and only got a 3.3. Go to the math lab to do the take home quizes because they're hard too sometimes.
Passive math class. Hw not required & if you are gifted at math, you don't need to do it. Only grades take home quizzes, in-class quizzes, & exams. Offers extra credit. Very clear math prof, gives tons of examples for you to try in class. Exams are extremely hard, so study & go over the quizzes. I wouldn't suggest Kelly if you are not good at math.
LOVE KELLY!! If you read all the reviews and combine them, they pretty much nail him. He loves math, is crazy math smart, can become impatience with stupid questions, gives hard tests, gives EC, & he challenges you! This class would not have been as fantastic as it was with any other prof but Kelly. We did a few projects and had helpful online hw.
He was the best math teacher I ever had. He was always available and willing to help me with any questions I had. Very smart and very nice
Calc IV is the BEST math class, especially with Kelly! I had to leave the class over a week early & Kelly helped me to finish all the work in the class & take my final BEFORE I left! Kelly is great at helping students as long as you have somewhat of an idea of what you are doing. The lectures were kinda boring, but the homework & projects were fun!
Don't get me wrong. Kelly is a great teacher and is very smart. I was able to pass his 91 class. So he was doing something right. I'm in his Math 92 right now and I'm wishing I had taken someone else. I like the fact that he is there to help, but when I do go to him, I feel like he only confuses me more. I won't take him again.
Don't get me wrong., Kelly is a great teacher and is very smart and KNOWS what hes talking about, I'm in his Math 92 right now and I'm wishing I had taken someone else. I like the fact that he is there to help, but when I do go to him, I feel like he only confuses me more. I won't take him again.
He is really nice. If he sees you are trying to understand and get a good grade he is willing to help. If you are stuck on something go to his office and he is happy to help. One house purchasing projec, four tests, and weekly homework and quizes. Tests are not hard, or long if you study the study topics and do the homework.
Honestly, he is an awesome teacher that will put time in explaining on how to solve a particular problem. I definitely would recommend him.
Took K. Jahns on my 2nd go for Math 99. My favorite part was he graded our work based on our process rather than final answer. If I messed up a bonehead error (sign error, add/sub, etc) he only took maybe 1/2 point off of a 6 point question, given our methods were on track. Homework was not graded, except for review quizzes. Get ready to study!!!
Kelly was consistent with his grading methods, attitude , and overall demeanor towards the class. A very cool guy. Does not make his class harder than it should be. For example, he noticed the class average was not great and adjusted his class accordingly. I achieved a B grade with no book at all. Although I did go to the math lab regularly
great
Kelly is such a great professor. He seems to genuinely care about student success, and his passion for math makes for fun, easy to follow lectures. Unlike every single other math professor I have had, Kelly actually grades fairly. Math gives me extreme anxiety, but Kelly's teaching style has boosted my confidence in the subject tenfold. He's great!
Fantastic teacher. really knows his material and is able to assist in any way. available via email or in class. always helpful and patient, also pretty funny guy as well which makes class nice.
I loved him!! I've always struggled with math, but he made me understand it somehow! He litteraly goes through every step with you until you understand the problem. He also doesn't use a book, which makes it easier to study for tests. Took him for 2 math classes and passed them both:) The best/funniest teacher I've ever had!
Honestly the best math teacher I have ever had. He grades fairly and gives you points for at least being on the right track. Also very hilarious and won't mind explaining something until you actually understand it!
Best math professor ever! This was my second attempt at Math 99. Kelly's class is set at a good pace. He's honest, cares, and wants everyone to participate and learn. Homework is recommended but never turned in. Quizzes are take home, but quizzes and test are set at a high standard. You will thankful when it comes to the final. Strongly recommended!
I took math 92 with Kelly after a few year gap since taking math 91. Because of this and my general difficulty with math, I didn't pass the class. I didn't realize how great a teacher he was until I had to take 92 over this quarter with a different teacher. Kelly treats you and grades like a caring person, not like a math robot. Plus he's a hottie!
I have had my fair share of math teachers at SCC, and Kelly is by far the best. He's stern, and doesnt waste time but hes in no way boring. He gives out small extra credit, but he will make it count if you need it, or deserve it. He genuinely wants to help everyone who wants to do well. Just go to his classes and he will make it work however needed
Kelly is an awesome math instructor. He will do what he can to help you succeed. He will make you work for your grade but you will come out knowing more than you would out of almost any other instructors class. If you enjoy math and want a challenge then take his class.
There honestly isn't a bad thing to say about Mr. J, he really cares about success and making sure his class understands the material. He shows you multiple ways to do the problems. There isn't any collected homework, and he will work out any problem you ask about as a class to make sure everyone can do the problems assigned. Hands down best teach.
Awesome instructor! Very approachable, and most importantly... respectful, and wants students to succeed. Very organized class with clear criteria: 1 weekly HW, 1 weekly quiz, 4 tests, 2 projects and a final exam. Opportunities for extra credit, and you can petition for partial credit on assignments if you were on the right track, but misstepped.
He was the best math teacher I have ever taken. The course assignments for the quarter were very clear. Homework was recommended, but never collected in class. He was also very funny and made class fun and interesting.
Kelly is a charismatic and empathetic professor. I love that he makes his own work so we can get rid of the overpriced and unneccesary textbooks. As long as you show your work, you will get a good grade. I love the way he grades because he grades based on your work, not the answer, so you can always see where you went wrong. Would def take again.
Prof Jahns is a superb teacher. He explains every concept clearly and takes the time to ensure that we "get" the subject matter. Heavy on the homework, but he doesn't collect it. He assigns homework quizzes though. If you want to do well in the class, though, do the homework. His exams are tough but fair. Overall, the class was a true pleasure.
Great teacher, graded fairly and had oppourtunity for extra credit. He was available if I ever needed him and frequently kept in touch with his students. That being said I've taken online math classes before and I was not at all a fan of the online system he used for homework though. The video lectures were not helpful, I had to use khan academy.
By far my favorite teacher that I've had at this school so far. He is very funny, and you can tell he truly cares for his students and loves his job. He tries his best to help everyone succeed and explains things very in-depthly. I will definitely take as many math courses from him as possible.
Jahn's classes are challenging, but what to expect and what is expected of you is clear from day one. Do the work and you'll do well. Attend class, take good notes, ask if you're confused, do the homework even if it's not graded! He can be intimidating at times but if you need help just ask and he is more than willing to help however he can.
An awesome teacher! Kelly clearly explains all steps and even gives some tips to make it easier. Many chances for extra credit. He does like some weird and unusual problems however, he will give part credit for getting most of the steps correct. He does not use the book but creates his own math problems. The class was fun.
Kelly is a great teacher. I learned so much taking his classes. If you plan on skipping you wont pass. you must show up to learn the material properly.
This class was pretty challenging for me, but Professor Jahns was great. He communicated by email promptly, grades for pen/paper assignments (scanned in and emailed) were returned quickly, and there were a few key opportunities for extra credit/bonus points. His grading was forgiving -- he gave partial credit for incorrect answers but good work.
It's math, it's hard. However, this guy made it a bit less horrible. He's accessible and cares a lot about the subject he teaches. He didn't make anything more difficult than it needed to be and offered some extra credit. However, his exam prep isn't very organized, so stay prepped during the units.
He is understanding and helpful. He could use some more lectures but he is great other than that. I hate math and am not great at it an I did good!
When I took it, we had the option to either be on campus or through Zoom. This professor helps you a lot. He goes over a lot of examples in class to help prepare for the exams. Definitely recommend taking notes in class. Looking at the syllabus, there seems to be a lot of homework, but there isn't. The exams are straightforward.
Always allows references to notes, makes himself available by email and responds fairly quick
At first Kelly seemed like a hard teacher, but after the first couple weeks his expectations seemed much more clear. On quizzes/tests, Kelly gives partial credit on most problems as long as you are on the right track, which saved my grade many times. I highly suggest doing the extra homework problems, some help you understand future test problems.
Kelly was a great professor and his class was very manageable. Quiz and homework due every week with 3 tests and a final throughout the semester. He is a generous grader that rewards points if you show your work even though your answer may not be correct. Best Math professor at SCC.
TAKE KELLY FOR STATS! or any other math class you need. Math is hard but he had a really manageable workload and was a generous grader. Puts everything on canvas if you can't make class, every tool and example you need. Lots of extra credit at the end of the quarter! Gives partial credit on exams if you make small errors! Best math professor!!
I took Calculus 1 online as I had no option to take it in person. I have been EXTREMELY struggling with this class as we are given absolutely no lecture material, examples, powerpoints or taught whatsoever, but then expected to know the material by teaching ourselves. Calculus is a very hard subject, especially when you are doing it all on your own
Hes a great teacher, I took Pre Calc 1 from him. There were many assignments but nothing unbearable. I had fun in class and he was always very clear and understanding.
The best math teacher I've ever had. Wish I could have had him for more than just calc 1. If you have a chance to take him, do it! I benefitted so much in calc 2 and 3 by taking his class first.
I took math 87 and loved it. It was online but I learned so much and it really made me enjoy doing math. Would recommend! The final was really straight forward and if you try than you can get an amazing grade.
A really nice guy that will help when you reach out to him but honestly didn't teach me a single thing this quarter. All the material was through MyMathLab and I taught myself everything that I learned with it. I didn't get a good grade because I couldn't keep up with the pace of everything with my other classes. Understanding, but very hands off.
Very Patient!
Math 87. Workload was fine, he was responsive and super helpful when needed. Only thing I didn't like was the group assignments because people don't like to respond so I had to do a couple group assignments by myself until I was reassigned to a new group. Sort of out of his control, just sharing my thoughts. Would take another class taught by him.
Mr. Kelly is such a nice professor. He is clear on what is expected and accessible outside of class for any questions you might have. He is also pretty lenient on assignments as long as you communicate if you're struggling. I'm terrible at math so I recommend him to anyone!
Lectures were well-structured, all requirements were logical and easily understandable, no surprises there, unlike some other online classes I took. Extra explanation or assistance were available whenever needed. Didn't penalize for minor mistakes. Provided constructive feedback and generously awarded partial credit for partially correct answers.
great teacher very patient and his lectures and examples all made sense and it wasn't boring. he was very understanding. I'm really bad at math and he was very helpful when i would ask for help or was struggling. he genuinely cares about his students and to see us pass. i looked forward to going to his class. highly recommend taking his class.
Professor Jahns sets clear expectations. The content is challenging, but he's willing to help if you reach out. Using resources like Unstuck AI alongside course materials can make the workload manageable. Overall, a rewarding class for those willing to put in the effort.
I took his hybrid class last summer. Very important that you read the every overview(word for word) he has given you on what to prepare for the quizzes and exams. No surprises. Use the extra credits. He is a great instructor.
Pros: Very relaxed, has a clear cut schedule, will tell you what you need to study before big exams, responds very quick to canvas messages. Cons: Sometimes doesn't explain certain problems to the full extent, but this is being REALLY picky. 10/10 professor, would take his class again.
Great teacher! Very knowledgeable and clear on his lectures. Even though the attendance isn't mandatory, it's important because he can clear up whatever your confusion is. Online book and assignments were great. Group projects not too great because some people don't work well with others. I would take another class with him.
I took his Calculus 3 class over the summer. The subject matter difficulty notwithstanding, he was an excellent instructor and was always willing to answer questions. The tests were challenging, and the projects were a bit of a head scratcher at times, but the requirements never added complexity to what we were learning.
