Get ready to teach yourself human anatomy! He seems to try hard, but he is not a very good communicator and not very clear on the information you are responsible for on tests.
This guy makes it way too hard.

You will be teaching yourself anatomy, hes horrible
Too terrible for words...
Yeah, he is a horrible teacher but his tests are so easy. You just have to read the book and study and you will do fine. But, his quizes are hell! But it really isnt that bad.
I don't see why people say he's so horrible. He dumbs the material down so much! Most of the test questions are just modified from his practice quizes. Come on people, Don't bash on the guy just because you don't want to do the work.
If there were ever a teacher's hall of shame, he would be the first prize winner!
I thought this class was fine.. I don't see why so many people had problems with it? The tests are pretty easy and I enjoyed this class..
He really isn't that bad, he's an average teacher. Nothing to make you hate him but really nothing to make you like him. The tests vary, some or all from online questions while others seem to come from nowhere. He always asks if anyone has questions so he does care, but just study and its ok
I'm a pretty smart person, and he managed to confuse the hell out of me. Nice guy, wants to do everything he can, but he's just not a very good teacher. I'm planning on teaching myself the material, and you should do the same.
I don't see how people can call any of these classes easy. I've taken one of his tests, and while it was a little less difficult than I expected having seen his old tests...I still didn't feel good about it. And I studied. These are basically pre-mad level courses. So much complex material.
He seems like a nice guy, but he's just a very boring speaker. It's hard not to fall asleep, and he goes into way too much detail and makes it difficult to decide on what areas to focus on.

Horrible teacher. If you have him, get as many study guides as you can to teach yourself. I suggest Netter flash cards and the Netter CD-rom that allows you to create Anatomy quizzes to take. His class IS a waste of time.

He makes the class too confusing. The TA taught us more at review sessions for tests than he did in class. I would suggest trying to find a different professor to take the class from.
ugh...if you can, avoid taking this class with him. he's a nice guy and all...but he always manages to have me confused after each and every lecture. and most of the time he doesn't even know what he's talking about. just plan on teaching anatomy to yourself!
OUCH! Physiology was hard stuff.
Hide all sharp objects in case of extreme boredom or anger!!!!
he seems to be helpful but there is too much stuff packed in to one semester
He was a great professor, but this class is hard and takes a lot of time to study and prepare for the tests. Be prepared to dedicate a lot of time to this course.
hardest teacher ever...do not take from him...physiology or any other class
Terrible teacher.
I liked him better for phys but anatomy is impossible I printed off all the diagraphms memorized them up and down knew my stuff and still got a D in the course. He goes over things quickly and doesn't explain very well. Just shows pictures and says this is that and it does this. That is all. Very boring and not as helpful as he could be
Who cares about his Motorcycle. Went one day for help before a test...Told me to meet him at his Motorcycle club because he was to busy. Stay away, not fun. Many other friends I have had do not enjoy. Study Guides are awful and lectures are boring.
If you go to class and go in for help you'll do fine~
very difficult class! take it with someone else or at juco.

I don't think he's the best teacher, he seems to have some trouble communicating and I think most of the stuff he says comes straight out of the book, but he will never test you on anything he didn't talk about. Just go to class, take notes and stop whining. Some of the easiest classes I took were from KJ.
class is pretty hard. i think he is a decent teacher. if you goto class, take decent notes and prepare for tests more than the night before you'll be fine. be sure to attend review sessions for tests, they tell you EVERYTHING!
I had him for 246 and I loved the class. He was fair and if you attend class, read, & pay attention, the class is pretty easy. He is also the 247 lab director. The lab is a lot of fun but the lab manual is awful! Take the lab and class together, it is helpful. Go to lecture because he gives pop quizzes & attendance points for ec.
The information itself is not that hard, but he has trouble communicating to the students. You HAVE to go to class, read the suggested books, and take notes before you go to class. That is so you understand what he is saying!!!

He doesn't do a very good job of letting you know what will be expected of you on the test. BE SURE TO STUDY BEFORE CLASS! if no you will be screwed and you won't know what he is talking about... but you could have henrich and I hear he is hell!
Take anatomy with someone else!!! Dr. Alexander also teaches the course.
He seemed like a nice guy but was an awful teacher. At review sessions, it seemed like he was just trying to intimidate the students. The class should be relatively easy and fun but with him it was so confusing and frustrating
He is very unclear and a horrible teacher. He tries to be funny but instead ends up being very creepy. He is hard to understand and isn't a good teacher. I was 2 points away from an A in the class and he still wouldn't round me up even though I earned an A. He is awful and I hate him...if you get him SWITCH immediately!
There are quizzes almost everyday in lecture, so attendance is basically mandatory. Review sessions are pretty pointless because the practice tests are always way different than the real one. His tests are hard and material on it is unpredictable. Sucky class.
He makes the material so much harder than it actually is. He turns interesting information very confusing. If you want a good grade in this class be ready to read the book and teach yourself. The review sessions are worthless and the tests are completely unpredictable. His examples given during class do not help you on the tests very much at all.
I got an A, but spent more time in his office than in the actual class. He would say one thing and then contradict himself a second later. If you don't go to class you wont understand anything, and if you take notes, they will be confusing. Try and switch!
To start things off, Dr. Johnson is a weird guy. He makes bad jokes and tries to be everyones' buddy but just comes off as a weirdo. The class itself isn't that bad, though it can be challenging. There are usually 1 or 2 quizzes every week so attendance is pretty much mandatory. If you study the old tests and notes you should be fine for tests
KJ is not a bad teacher--it's true that the material is difficult, but if you want a career in Allied Health, you have to learn this stuff. A's are easy enough if you put in the work, but if you slack, it's very hard to get caught up. Tests are fair and predictable. Also, go to his office if you need help, he is much better 1-on1 than in class.
Kelly Johnson is the most boring teacher i have ever had. He makes stupid jokes tha he thinks are funny and then talks about his dogs. As of this semester he has switched the tests and no longer gives the same exam that he had been giving for about four years previously which really screws me over. Thanks Kelly.
VERY knowledgable, but talks about waaay too many things. By the time a test comes up, you've gone over SO much information that you're not really sure what all you need to study, and he doesn't really specify, either. On the test, he'll usually pick 2-3 different topics to question you about and just hammer away on them, getting very detailed.
Would not recommend as a professor for any class!
HE can be very boring at times but for the most part a pretty good teacher. I suggest to ask a lot of questions, he will like you more!
This was the most hopeless class ever. It was so boring. I studyed all the time but still got D's and C's on the tests even when i felt very ready. U don't know what will be on the tests. He doesn't follow the book he just says what he thinks is right. I would suggiest the best thing 2 do is maybe study the slides. Don't take class if u dont have 2
The tests are ridiculously hard. A nice guy but bad teacher.
Let me start off by saying, if you need help in this class, he is available for help all the time. He always stops lectures to ask for help. He is VERY HELPFUL. However, the material is VERY DIFFICULT and requires too much studying for someone already take 17 hours. GOOD LUCK TO WHOEVER HAS TO TAKE IT.. you're gonna need it. :)
Very helpful and cares about his students. Willing to help out wherever he can. Easy to understand information. He knows his stuff.
Kelly is interesting. wouldn’t waste time taking the computer quizzes/mock test; they don’t help with the exam. TA’s are helpful MOST times. I found that going to him 1 on 1 was a waste of time. What was very helpful was remembering the material from the exam before because everything will blind in after awhile. NOT a good teacher but a good guy!
Kelly Johnson single handedly made all four years at my high school look like a complete joke. Of all the information he taught us in class, you get tested over less than 50 percent of it. If you like taking classes where you don't know what will be on the exam, this is the class for you. I beg of anyone to switch out of his class if you can.
Pathetic excuse for a teacher. Doesn't seem to care whether students do well or not. Lectures are painfully boring and you don't get much out of them. Don't bother going to his office for help as it won't do you any good. Bombards you with way too much information and doesn't clarify anything. Avoid him at all costs unless you want your GPA ruined.
He is horrible! You never know what is going to be on the test. Way too much information! And worst of all I was 5 pts. away from a B and he would not give it to me! That is freaking ridiculous! I really thought he was a nice guy till he wouldnt give it to me!
HORRIBLE TEACHER!!!! He is not good with explaining things.. all he does is rambles on and on. HIS practice tests were easy but then the real tests were 10000x harder. I HATE kelly!!!!
Not a good teacher, class itself is just a lot of memorization but Kelly finds a way to make the tests stupidly impossible, even though they shouldnt have been. Lectures are boring and you get nothing out of them; he just rambles on basically talking to himself in the front of the lecture hall. Definitely avoid taking class from him if you can.
confusing
Kelly Johnson is an extremely helpful professor. the material is hard and it is a lot of memorization. if you put in the effort he is willing to help you out a lot. extra credit quizzes randomly during lecture.
I LOVED this teacher. The material is so interesting, and he teaches how I learn. He was always helpful when I needed clarification of things. He is a great teacher.
Kelly Johnson is a horrible teacher who cares about his students' personal lives more then their grades. He spends half his lectures making stupid anaologies that pertain only to him because he has a Phd. The material is easy except his tests are impossible. He would go over something for 10 seconds and expect you to remember it for a month, AUWFUL
Worst teacher ever! He makes things as difficult as possible on his tests. If possible do not take a class with him.
He is a boring professor, often confusing, and easily distracts himself from topic. What he teaches in the course is not reflected on his exams, as he often complicates the questions to the extreme with wordiness. To succeed: Take good notes during class, review his lectures on pp, do all online practice quizzes, do practice test (no answers tho).
Human Physiology: A very challenging proffessor. You should plan on a lot of studying and focus on all the little things. Quizzes are impossible to pass if you do not study. Quizzes are random as well.
USE YOUR TA's!! Study for the quizzes. Go to the Reviews...
THE TESTS ARE NOT IMPOSSIBLE! Everything you need to know is in the book-- read it! It's very clear and easy to understand. Kelly is a nice man and is willing to help anytime. His lectures were not very clear though, and I relied mostly on the book/ppts and ended up with an A in the class. Tests are easy. Quizzes ARE IMPOSSIBLE. Go to the reviews!
Dr. Johnson is committed to helping his students, and he cares a great deal about providing the best material for them. Anatomy is a hard class that does require daily studying, but Dr. Johnson is always more than willing to help his students by constantly holding office hours, holding review sessions, and providing old exams to study with.
You can tell that he knows what he's talking about, he just can't teach it.
attend everything. lectures are a little hard to follow. go over slides and figure out some of the outline BEFORE lecture. tests are pretty hard, quizzes very hard, all of it can be easy to handle if you study every day over lecture notes and book.
This teacher is very unorganized. He tries to cram way too much information and too much details into each unit test and does not explain concepts well at all. He's horrible as a teacher and KU should get someone else to teach Physiology!
Johnson is extremely unorganized, when asked to clarify what he is talking about or to talk in depth about a certain topic the response is always " I don't really know" preceded by an attempt to sound educated. This man should not have a PhD, it is amazing to me how he obtained one and has continued to be the the only physiology professor at KU.
Kelly Johnson is a horrible teacher. First, he does not know how to teach in a big lecture. Second, he is annoying and does not know his information. I would avoid taking his lectures if possible.
He's a terrible teacher and kind of a jerk. He talks down to you if you go see him in office hours. Pray you have a good TA who can teach you at reviews like I did.
Terrible teacher, doesn't know how to teach an anatomy class. He goes off on tangents that don't make sense. Avoid taking classes taught by him at all costs if possible!
Read the book. His tests language are confusing. He thinks he makes up these really easy ways of taking tests but really, they are confusing. He is a nice guy, especially to the girls... He is willing to go the extra mile for you, but his teaching style of powerpoint and use of mulitiple books makes it hard to keep up unless you can afford 600$
If you can, avoid taking any class with Kelly Johnson. I took biol 240 and biol 246 with him in the same semester and it was absolutely terrible. He requests his classes to be at 8 am, which makes it even worse. Read the book is my advice, its the only way I learned from this awful teacher.
He was by far one of the worst teachers I have had at KU
I got a C in anatomy. To rate him, he's actually unprepared when it comes to lecture. He knows his stuff but he doesn't organize his lecture well. He doesn't show interest lecturing either except when he talks about his life. He's an unstable man and he'll think you're not qualified to talk to him unless you have a Ph.D. or higher rank.
LOVED HIM!Go to every class, take good notes. Get ahold of old tests & old final. Study hard to keep your quiz grades up...thats the only reason I got a B, if I had done better on my quizzes I would have been able to get an A.
Horrible professor. The self proclaimed 'Big Dog' knows his stuff, but cant teach it at all. Lectures are very boring and at 8 AM, so expect to take a nap. Get a hold of the old final
I would not take a class from this professor if I had the choice. Studied for hours and hours and it was all a waste.
Study the old tests and final
KJ is a terrible teacher. There is no way to get out of his physiology class. STUDY old tests and if you find the final use it. I HATED this class. Go to the TAs, they will help you out. KJ is useless, decent person though.
Kelly Johnson is easily the worst professor that I have had at KU. His powerpoint slides are all over the place and very hard to follow. He stands at the podium and mumbles into the computer screen for the whole class period. If you have to take physiology, you are stuck with him.
Worst teacher at KU. Too much information into a small test.Quizess are hard and he words everything very weird.Makes stupid analogies in class and talks about his useless PhD.Cares about random aspects of physiology. And prefers girls over guys.
really nice guy who wants to help you but doesn't know how. he really is a fairly terrible teacher. he teaches as if you already know the material so it's way helpful to read the material before class. i majorly used my text book and it helped a ton. this class is doable but he doesn't give out A's, you have to earn your grade.
Words cannot describe how awful he is. Lectures are so disorganized, it's very easy to get lost and confused even if you're paying attention. Way too much information, makes studying for tests entirely too difficult. He is a very weird person too. Went to his office hours and he kept making awkward jokes and it was really uncomfortable.
The only reason to show up for this class is to take the attendance quizzes which are completely useless for the test but do get you attendance points. I highly recommend just using your text book to fill out the outlines he provides. Trying to do them during class is pointless because you never know where he is or what he is even talking about.
Really enthusiastic guy, but is really hard to follow during class. He provides an outline, but its hard to fill in during lecture, and most of the things he says in class can be better understood by reading the book. He does try very hard to make himself available to help students. He just isn't very good at teaching..
Make sure you go to every class.. Even if you do, you will still struggle. Most of the quizzes are impossible, and the tests as well. If you have to take this class, he's your only option. Try to take it at a community college and transfer your credit. Good luck!
Going to lecture is useless. Complete waste of time. AVOID THIS CLASS! Way to difficult for someone to understand. Everything is very scattered and unorganized.
Mr. Kelly is a nice guy, and tries to be funny and helpful during class. However, his objectives are unclear and he seems to think his class is the only one students have time for. His lectures, book, and exams do not correlate.
The only reason you should show up to this class is to take the pop attendance quizzes, which are harder than the tests. Notes are essential, the stuff you dont think is important is what's going to be on the test. He's fair, just a little tough. If you ENJOY human body, this class is NOT that hard to follow.
very hard teacher. lectures over 200+ slides and then gives you a 40 question multiple choice, some true false, and some determining if A is greater than B, less than B, or about the same. very difficult course.
Yes, Human Anatomy is a difficult class. However, it is possible to get an A in the class; it just requires A LOT of preparation and studying. Although Professor Johnson isn't the most engaging lecturer, he tries to help his students by taking questions, posting practice quizzes and past tests, and offering various office hours.
DO NOT BUY THE TEXTBOOK, it is useless. Go to class, go to the TA review sessions, they help a lot. Study old tests and the old finals, they help you understand what he wants you to know. Not easy, but doable if you try.
Really nice guy, willing to meet outside of class and accommodating. Gives clear expectations and very straight forward. this class is recommended as he is interested in making you a better presenter. Also, he has a nice surprise at the end of the semester.
CONFUSING! The outlines he gives are great, but he does not follow them. He is super unorganized. He provides useless information during lecture that make it confusing to understand what is actually important to write down. I learned more from going to the TA review sessions than actually going to class.
Hands down the worst professor I've had at KU. Has a super organized outline but does not follow it. He takes material from three different textbooks at over 200 a pop. He has no assigned reading to help you come prepared for the class, only his PowerPoint that are over 200 slides per unit. If you have to take it GO TO REVIEW SESSIONS! Only way.
Although it's difficult at 8am always go to class & take notes. I highly recommend listening to his lectures online to prepare for quizzes. They're harder than exams. 1st quiz he will ask about TA's names & office hours so know those! The material is easy but KJ finds a way to make it more difficult than it should be. Final is cumulative.
Inconsistent, not helpful
Write down everything he says. Rewrite notes after class in the outline, do not use outline during class. Unorganized to the max, but definitely knows his subject. Answers emails thoroughly. Book is useless. Drawings are exceptionally helpful. Tests are easy if you study every day and don't cram.
Super unorganized. Do not take from this professor. Worst professor I've had at KU
I took this class for human physiology. If it wasnt for the TA and internet, I wouldn't have passed. So go to office hours and reread notes every day after class, AND USE YOUTUBE. It'll save you
One of the worst teachers I've had to deal with. Powerpoints are from past years (test grades haven't even been changed for the current class's test avg). Several slides have mistakes. He babbles all class (going off on tangents constantly) and makes several mistakes while explaining topics. Very hard to follow. You'll be teaching yourself.
Horrible prof. I went into his office to talk about his class but he just talked about his personal life the whole time which was very uncomfortable. I put all my time and effort into this class and it was impossible. Not helpful, talked about himself ALOT in class and his lectures made no sense. Avoid at all cost.
Hardest class I have taken at KU, and not because of the material itself, but the way it is taught and presented. Going to lectures are mandatory because of 10 pop quizzes given throughout the semester, but lectures are not helpful at all. Looks down upon students and treats them like they're stupid if they ask questions. Impossibly hard tests.
Physiology is a hard class, but it's possible to pass. Dr. Johnson's outlines are useless, but his lectures paired with his powerpoints are really helpful. His lectures are recorded and put on BlackBoard, which is extremely helpful when studying for his tests - I listened to every single lecture again when studying. Drops 1 test and curves class.
It is very possible to EARN an A in Dr. Johnson's class, but one must seriously apply themselves when taking this course. Attend ALL the lectures and make sure to understand the concepts that he is discussing in class. Do not lie to yourself and be meticulous about what you learn. It isn't easy, but you should visit him during office hours to learn
Kelly Johnson is the best teacher for BIOL 599. He gives excellent feedback, really cares about your interests, and although he is busy teaching multiple classes, he is willing to schedule as many appointments with you as you need to help you.
Johnson is extremely tough to understand. His lectures are so long and the slide shows he teaches from are over 200 slides long. They are also the same slides he has been using for year and years and years. He abbreviates everything on his slides so its very hard to study from. If possible, DEFINITELY take this class online.
Kelly Johnson is by far the worst professor I have ever had. He does not lecture, he gloats about how smart he is, insults his students, and carries out a continuous exercise in mental masturbation. If he isn't talking about his dogs or Maui, he's telling you an irrelevant anecdote from his personal life. This is a class, Johnson, not Oprah.
Probably the worst professor ive had so far. pop quizzes are often ridiculously hard so if you have to take his class and want an A, make sure youre constantly caught up with the material in great detail
By far the worst teacher I've had in 3 years at KU. He's an arrogant old man who will publicly humiliate students in his class that are trying to learn a difficult subject. You're kind of S.O.L. since he's the only PHYS teacher at KU. TAKE ONLINE IF YOU CAN
This is easily the hardest class I have taken thus far in my undergrad at KU. Dr. Johnson is a joke. The way he explains concepts makes them more complicated than they need to be. Read the book and you'll learn way more on your own time. Lectures are soooo long and extremely boring and dry. However, skipping class is not an option- pop quizzes.
Despite all the pop quizzes I started skipping class bc he calls on random students to answer hard questions that I never understood. Gets mad if you ask questions in class and will call you out for being dumb. Take this class at johnson county or read the book, don't rely on lectures to pass
Yes this class is not an easy A, but its not hard to get an A either. You just have to put in the work, go to class, keep up with the material. He posts all of his lectures online after class. Yes he has pop quizzes but most of the time you work as a group. He may seem scary in class but honestly a very nice professor if you get to know him.
Use the TAs, they are your best resource for succeeding in this class. Show up to every class (attendance points and pop quizzes), and stay alert! Although Kelly sometimes makes the material seem harder than it is, don't stress. Look over the slides and simplify into main points. Quizzes may be hard, but tests are pretty fair. An A is achievable!
My least favorite professor. Makes an outline available but skips around. Goes through notes very fast. Hard to take notes. Makes lectures very frustrating.
Lectures seem unorganized and are hard to follow, he tends to skip around with his slides and over explain things that could only take a few words to understand. He urges people to read the material and fill out his outline before class--the book is helpful but his outline is confusing at times. Attendance isn't mandatory but pop quizzes are given!
Kelly Johnson is the biggest bully to walk KU's campus. He loves to talk about his PhD during class and takes almost any opportunity he can to make the class feel stupid (Bless our hearts as Kelly would say). TAs are amazing and the reviews are really helpful. Lectures are random and the powerpoints are hard to follow.
The material for this class was very easy. Listening to lectures you would think the tests would be very simple, but he makes the questions on the test very difficult. Make sure to show up to class because he does give pop quizzes. I would start studying earlier rather than later. He's helpful if you go into his office hours.
Tough class if science isn't your favorite thing. KJ isn't the greatest teacher but he's not the worst ever. You need to study the lectures throughout the week to understand them. Book kind of helped but not really. Use the TA's for help, it'll be better then the book. Beware of the final, half of it is cumulative other half on recent topics.
