Tons of reading (boring). Sometimes the sun shines a little too brightly. high voice. Joshua Goldstein

Worst professor ever. Ever.
unhelpful and unreceptive to students questions.
Worst professor experience in my life. Plays favorites blatantly in class. Class material also completely irrelevant. Leaves you with a sour taste in your mouth.
She was one of the most biased teachers that I ever had. Im sorry but the classroom is not your forum to bash the president every class period... material was also very unclear and not adequately represented on the tests
Kadera is great if you take the time to get to know her. She's a bit heavy on political realism so if stay away if you don't like it. Extremely helpful during office hours, very challenging, highly reccommended
To be fair I didn't take an entire semester with her, but this is only because she came off incredibly brash and abrasive the first week--especially for an intro course.
Good class, very understanding, excellent people skills, get to know her and she's awsome.
I thought she was awesome!
Poor choice of readings.
Extremely biased, talks entirely too fast in lecture and expects students to write down every detail (even though she claims she doesn't, her tests are entirely too specific not to), huge papers with vagueness, relies heavily on TAs. not suggested.
The first day of class she talked about how she wanted to be addressed in emails with the words "Professor Kadera" in them, and would not respond to anything else such as Mrs. or Ms. Kadera.Has awkward methods of grading such as the possiblility of disputed grades being lowered more, and the fact that she will only bump a limitedamount of students.
She had her favorites in class and if you weren't one of them you were out of luck. She also gave unfair Extra Credit out that was not available to everyone. Worst Prof EVER

I hate this woman with a passion. She's got her doctorate shoved up her a**. Exams are hard and there is no way to prepare for the bogus questions she asks that are neither in lecture or in the text. Don't take her class, wait til Conneybear teaches it...they alternate semesters.
Her tests are difficult, but fair and she does offer extra credit to those who attend class. I thought her lectures were clear, interesting and they contained a lot of info.
She was very difficult to follow!
I would not suggest taking a class with this teacher. She is not clear and her tests are too specific. She is controlling (the thing about how to address her in an email is true). Things must be done her way...no room for the student to "think for themselves." I have a 3.5 GPA and squeaked by with a C in her class...tests are too specific...
Kadera was not very helpful and her tests were basically based on material not covered very well in the course.
Very friendly and helpful
If you are not required to take a class with her (especially IR) do not take it. Although IR is complex she is not a very good teacher and you learn nothing and the curve, although liberal arts is not generous. Even if you think you are politically savy, dont do it, its all theory!
Cake. Her powerpoints were very clear, she explain them well. I brought my laptop, which helped, because she talks a lot, quickly and I noticed lots of people struggling to take notes fast enough- usually they copied off my laptop. She gives lots of extra credit though, and I felt the tests were very straightforward, basic questions. She's nice
Loved Kadera. I brought my laptop to class everyday- she talks kinda fast and there are a lot of notes- but as long as I took notes I was fine. She gives TONS of extra credit, sometimes just for showing up! Take GOOD notes, do some extra credit, and you'll be able to pull a B without a problem, if not an A.
This teacher really sucks. She has all her own "integrated" theories which she doesn't explain well because she assumes that you already know what she's talking about. It's an intro level course and she ruins the awesome topic of International Relations
whoo hoo!
This class was well taught, with a tag team approach from Prof. Kadera and Prof. Mitchell. Lots of notes to take but most Powerpoints are posted on ICON. Success in this class lies less with the Profs. and more with your TA's. TA's do the grading and write the quizzes. Get the early concepts (paradigms) down and everything builds off that.
no fun, uninspiring, a load of crap, depressing, dragged on for hours, ta sucked, boo, poo, worked hard but probably still won't pass. don't take if you don't need to. absolutely terrible.
Shes a good teacher but for intro to IR it only matters what TA you have. The lectures tended to be about what the professor was doing research on at the time, so that kept it interesting. Just stay away from Hoon-Lee as your TA and you'll do fine in the class. He's a nice guy but he grades the hardest and does a horrible job explaining things.
WORST. TEACHER. EVER. Before her class i was interested in international studies and now i'm completely turned off and will never take a international relations class again. She talks incredibly fast, is impossible to understand, and makes references no one understands.
the class and professor make me want to kill myself. She so bad she tells us to read the textbook along with the class but then uses different terms and examples and basically everything different from the textbook. SO WHY ARE WE USING IT? Her tests are impossible and she wonders why the class average on them is a 61%. Most unfair prof. I ever had
I was a Political Science major going into this class, hoping to learn a little more about what is currently going on Internationally. I learned nothing, and I'm not a political science minor because of this woman. Worst professor I've ever had. I've got a 43% on the test average right now, and I'm above class average.
Very difficult class. Tests are very hard and you will find out that reading the text is not necessary. Tests just try to trick you and don't let you adequately display what you have learned. Drop if you do extremely bad after the first test because it is hard to catch up. TA's are helpful tho (V.Lefler).
Very difficult grader, you have to work really hard to get a good grade. Her lectures are pretty helpful, but she throws a ton of information at you, making it hard to follow along. Her tests are somewhat unfair, as they focus on some of the inane details of the lecture instead of important concepts.
I adored Professor Kadera. Intro to IR was one of my favorite classes- I learned a lot and always felt very engaged. She's tough but I always felt motivated because she made everything so interesting. Great course- I would recommend it.
I don't understand the bad reviews. Kadera does not pick favorites- I got an A and I've only spoken to her once. She's great- the class is very informative. I learned a great deal and I don't have a single regret. You have to work hard, but come on. We're in college now. If you don't want to work hard you shouldn't be here.
You have to work very hard in this class; it really should be more than 3sh. I spent more time on this class than 4-5sh classes. Her lectures are hard to follow. She jumps from one thing to another, giving a lot of information. It really helps to get on your TA's good side so your 10pg paper gets a good grade.
Very nice, sometimes lecture moves slowly, but works hard to keep students in lecture very engaged. also very intelligent
She jumps from one material to another so it is extremely hard to follow her lecture. Exams and papers are way too much for lower level course. Avoid her at all cost.
I had Prof. Kadera for several upper division classes and a research project. She is challenging, brilliant, and one of the best instructors I've ever met. Students who are serious about learning will derive great benefits from her classes.
Kadera is a pretty bad Prof. She got tenure rejected at the U of I and they keep her on staff to teach the bad 101 intro to IR course. She is an empirises which not only makes the class boring but doesn't do IR theories justice. Worst part was she bashes John J Mearshimer and Waltz who are probably the two smartest IR theoriests alive.
worst teacher ever
For thosewho wantto give her a good rating then power to you. She is nice yes, however she tests you over things that are nonsenical. There is no reason to a) remeber it or b) be tested over it. Basically, I don't agree with the way she teaches, she jumps around, and all together makes her class confusing.
She really is a nice lady. Her class is very easy if you take good notes. I barely opened the book, only when we didn't cover a chapter in lecture. She does jump around a lot but if you write down what she says and have have some common sense you will be fine for the most part on the tests.
She is a very nice prof, talks pretty fast and has a tendency to be a bit sporadic. But she is very smart and teaches Int. Conflict well. It's not an easy class, but very passable if you go to class and read.
She knows her stuff, but the tests are impossible. Lectures are boring and I find it hard to understand what she's teaching. Discussion doesn't help much either.
Great professor. Very knowledgable in her field. I took intro to International Relations with her, it was a hard class, but if you actually go to lecture and read the textbook it isn't bad. She can be kind of jumpy with material sometimes, but makes the content easy to understand. Lots of extra credit opportunities as well. Would recommend.
Great professor. Very intelligent, inspiring and truly cares about students. Gotta love her.
Horrible professor. Asks about extremely arbitrary things on tests. She says read the textbook, but honestly you have to know the random things that she decides. Do not take this class.
As a professor Kelly was great. Her teaching style is fun and kept me interested. The way the course was conducted was my struggle. The first half of the course is heavy reading that is meant for someone who is an expert in the subject. The books we read are much simpler in the second half. Class was mainly a lecture to confused faces.
She says reading the textbook is mandatory, but don't waste your money or time. Attend lectures and take notes and be prepared to answer the most arbitrary facts on the tests. All in all, I do not recommend taking this course with her as the instructor.
Not helpful, off subject in lecture. I would not recommend this class, especially for a gen ed. It could be interesting, but this professor is horribly boring.
Professor knows her stuff but chooses not to share with class in an easy and understanding way. Off topic in lecture, tests are sporadic and the class is overall confusing. Do not recommend with her.
Test are arbitrary and difficult. Lectures are confusing, boring and sporadic. No curve and little extra credit. Avoid this professor at all costs.
Shes nothing but an arrogant airhead. She loves listening to herself talk and acts surprised when no one follows the lecture.
Great Professor. Little bit hard and there are many things to read but very intelligent and try really really hard to help students. If you actively ask for help you will get an A. Not easy class but if you try, you can get an A. A range is quite wide as well. She gives lots and lots of extra credits.
Subtly sneaks her political views into lectures - liberal Extremely condescending, says at least once a week "oh, you're too young to know who X is" when X is a prominent politician or celebrity; tries to hold our hands through lectures Take notes on weirdobvious examples, she rewords them and has them as a test question
She didn't let the class use technology to take notes, but it didn't matter as she provided the power point slides on ICON, all I had to do was print them off. I recommend taking notes directly on the power point slides she provides for the class. Exams are over lectures and the textbook. She explains everything in detail. A lot of extra credit!
She is an incredibly smart person, but a terrible professor. I had her for an introductory class but she acted as if we were supposed to already know everything. She spent at least half the class rambling about nothing important and then wondered why nobody understood anything.
Boring lectures, doesn't allow technology in lecture or discussion, offers random extra credit quizzes about four times during the semester for up to 12 points so it's worth going to lecture. The slides are online but they definitely do not have all the information you need to know.
Her lectures were incredibly specific and too advanced for an introductory class. She would wonder why no one was understand anything and the concepts were uninteresting in the way she presented them. She doesn't seem to care about the intro class at all. Is only in it for her own research.
She really knows her stuff, but her lecture slides aren't very helpful. Offers extra credit quizzes a couple times throughout the semester so I'd go to lectures
TESTS are HARD! Not enough time to answers questions. Questions are irrelevant to anything, they are random, and there's no way anyone would know the correct answer. Don't take this class.
Generic intro course lectures. I found them interesting and useful for classes I have taken since then.
She will unleash the beast if she catches you with ANY technology in your hand. Most difficult class I have ever experienced. Professor seems as though she hates her life and likes to take it out on innocent students. Lecture slides are irrelevant and she talks too quick to catch anything. DROP THIS CLASS ASAP.
Terrible class over all. Ive never had a professor worse than her. She will freak out at anyone using technology. She has borderline abusive behavior towards students who dont follow her rules. Im not sure how she was able to teach at a college level. Her tests had nothing to do with lectures. Very hard to get a good grade.
Skips classes, says it is good to have a professor who does things besides teach. TAs do the lecture instead. Scolds you in person for not staying to hear the TAs lecture. Avoid, avoid, avoid.
Easily one of the worst professors I've ever encountered. Disrespectful & inconsiderate of her students. Didn't see an ounce of care whatsoever. On top of that, all assignments were always entered into the system wrong, causing lack of submissions. Furthermore: -Random due dates EVERYWHERE -Changing weight w/out notification -No info on slides BAD
I am taking this as a gen ed course so this class has nothing to do with my major I thought this was suppose to be an intro class but it is the exact opposite of that the lectures are extremely hard to follow along with I never missed a lecture and I am still confused all of the time TAs never know whats going on but thank god for extra credit
lectures were always extremely confusing, and the TAs never had any idea what was going on. she's horrible at teaching and will call out students in the middle of class for using technology. (if caught she makes you write a paper) i will be avoiding anything she teaches from now on.
Kelly Kadera is the worst professor Ive had. She changed the due date for our outline of our paper, peer review and final paper MULTIPLE times and didnt update ICON to record online when the new due date was. She didnt understand the third party grading system so it was crashing and we couldnt submit our papers, and WE were penalized.
STAY AWAY. This class is the worst class I've ever taken in my entire life. Not only is Kelly a demon in the body of an old white woman, but she prides herself in terrorizing her students. She skipped class several times, changed the due dates without telling anyone on ICON, and yelled at students for using technology. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
Words fail me as I attempt to describe this woman. Not only did she undermine, ostracize, and condemn students who used technology (some of us have ADHD and can't taken handwritten notes, Kelly), but she changed her ICON due dates several times throughout the course. I have two words if you are thinking about taking this class: STAY AWAY.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. This was the worst ran class ever. Professor missed class for I believe 3 and a half week. TAs were absolutely not helpful. Thought this was gonna be an intro class ITS NOT AT ALL. Disregard almost all reviews your TA or main ideas in lecture. Because when the exams come around gonna look almost nothing like it. STAY AWAY.
This class was poorly organized (ICON due dates were in the wrong year/changed all the time). Kadera hates the use of technology in class. You have to read the textbook and go to lecture in order to pass. However, Kadera does offer lots of extra credit, so take advantage of those. I got 80% on every exam and passed with an A, so easy class.
Kelly has been one of my favorite professors at the university. She is very knowledgeable about the material that she teaches. If you go to lecture consistently and actually pay attention you will have no problem. Test questions are challenging but they do relate directly to material covered in lecture - PAY ATTENTION TO EXAMPLES GIVEN IN LECTURE!!
Class is very unorganized. Prof was not there a third of the time. When she was there, the demeaning tone makes it hard to listen. Tests are on random points.
Kelly was the least pleasant professor I have ever known in my college career. She was rude and talked down to her students. I will pray for anyones mental health who takes her courses. She will break your soul since she has none. Try to avoid her classes at any cost.
class is hard for no good reason. kadera talks about whatever interests her, which is not always related to the exams. the hostile environment that kadera creates does not help either. Constantly feels like someone is going to get yelled at.
Just dropped this class. Prof does not allow any tech and is way too intense about it. Lectures do not make much sense and it seems like Kadera does not care that we do not understand. Waiting for someone else to teach this.
If you are a non PS major taking this for a Gen Ed (STAY AWAY). I was able to thankfully drop this class before the exam. Kadera did not prepare us for at all with and having TAs who don't know what is going on this class is a cluster you know what. If you're in this class get out before its too late and if you are thinking about enrolling don't.
I understand some of the complaints, Professor Kadera's lectures are often require necessary background information, and can be confusing if you don't have it. However, she's very helpful in office hours and there are plenty of resources if you're struggling. And for those with an IR interterest her lectures are a blast! Would recommend
Not an intro class, this is a class for people who already know a lot about international politics. Prof was actually much better when we went all online. funny how a bad in person lecturer is much better when they have to record the lecture. If its online, it may not be that bad. If its in person, avoid and take something else
I don't really understand all the bad reviews. She is definitely not the greatest teacher and her stance toward electronics is a little ridiculous, but she's alright. I found the discussions to be worse than lecture since we did nothing in them anyway. The material is easy, so to say it is her fault you're not doing well is a self-serving bias.
Prof makes this the worst experience possible. Lectures and discussion are unorganized. This is not a hard class but it is a miserable experience.
Too hard for an intro course. Tests are on obscure things. Not sure the point of my discussion section most of the time.
I enjoyed the content of the lectures, however, most of the content was not discussed in discussion (those, in general, felt like a waste of time) or appeared on the exam again. I also found the final essay rubric was really vague so it was hard to write. If you like IR you'll like this class but if not maybe don't take this class.
I am someone who enjoys foreign affairs and reads the news daily. I think this class is way to difficult for a gen ed. Discussions are almost pointless. Lectures are OK not bad, but not great either. Final Paper rubric was vague which made it hard for me. If you like IR you'll do fine, but don't pick this class for a Gen Ed if that's all you want.
Not sure what the point of this course is. Not sure what we were supposed to get out of sections. Tests are often on small points in the lecture and readings. Instructor is not very responsive.
War & Film was hands down the worst class I have taken at Iowa. Kelly is the worst teacher I've had at Iowa. This class was amazingly bad. This class is a political grab where you learn nothing about war in film but rather the gender, sex, and racism in films. You watch saving private ryan and then discuss gender sex and racism?? Awful class.
This class is impossible unless you have prior knowledge on international relations. I’m not even really sure what the point of this class is. I went to every lecture, discussion, did all the readings, and the first exam was on random crap she never talked about. Her slides are useless and she assumes u already know all there is to know abt IR
She cares about her subject but is really bad at demonstrating it. Her lectures are simple enough but you need to write every single thing for the exam. She also tends to belittle people with basic questions. The discussion was decent but the rest was not so fun, to say the least.
- Too difficult for an intro class - Lecture heavy - Discussions don't align closely with lecture content - Entire grade based off of 5 assignments, that will be harshly graded - Exams are open book, but you will get the most obscure questions that you have never learned anything about - She makes passive aggressive comments towards her students
This was one of the worst classes I've taken at Iowa. The lectures and discussions don't match up. The exams never correlated with what we learned in lectures. The class material set up is also terrible.
This class was rough. I went to every lecture and discussion for 2/3 of the semester and still got a C in this class. The lectures don't correlate to the discussion or test at all. Very obscure exams and barely any points in the gradebook. 1/10 class.
Where do I begin. Do not take a class from her. Her lectures are so incredibly scatterbrained with no helpful information on her slides. Her review slides for exams are quite literally the most useless thing. She posts 170 slides worth of just WORDS not even definitions, so they don't help at all. And her exams are on prior knowledge. SO bad.
Lectures provide no information and exams are based on prior knowledge.
You can tell that she is pretty smart and well-respected in her field, but she has absolutely zero clue on how to actually teach a course. The exams in intro to international relations (emphasis on intro) have almost nothing to do with course content (quizlet will be your best friend and even then is barely enough for a B).
Exams are extremely hard
I would highly recommend trying to take another class. I took as a gen ed and it was the biggest waste of my time as well as dropping my GPA a lot. She is not helpful and the quizzes are so hard for no reason, you cant even look things up. I don't know anyone who did well. Take another class.
She is bad at putting grades in and when she finally does there are no notes on why you missed points. Exams are VERY specific to the movies and readings and she has them set up to where when you move on from a question, you can't go back. Participation is easy but that doesn't make up for the lack of direction in other places.
Kelly Kadera is the worst professor I have ever had. I was dealing with personal issues and had accommodations that gave me leeway on assignments. She refused to grant leniency as I was dealing with my issues and disrespected and disregarded my disabilities and the situation I was dealing with. If you have to take a class with her, don't.
I took intro to international relations as a gen ed and while it's way too difficult for a gen ed, it's easy to pass. All exams are taken online and lecture attendance isn't mandatory.
Professor Kadera is horrible. Her lectures are all over the place and genuinely teaches you nothing. For an introductory course, it is very difficult. Most of the material on the exams is not covered in the readings or lectures. Your grade depends on 3 exams, a presentation, and a paper. I would not recommend this class or her to anyone.
Kadera was fine, I never really went to class because notes were posted. I used ChatGPT for tests and usually got a 80%. There was one big paper at the end, and we didn't really do anything in discussion. Honestly, I'd recommend taking another class for the international perspectives gen-ed.
Get ready for most of your time to go to this class. Course material could probably be better balanced throughout the semester. Some weeks there are three two hour films along with 75 pages of readings, while others only one film and 20 pages of reading. Essays require a lot of effort. I thought that I would enjoy this class and ultimately didn't.
The class was a struggle, with lectures that didn't match up with the exams. Attendance is mandatory, but the material felt disorganized. I found Unstuckstudy and ChatGPT helpful for reviewing and preparing for the tests.
Prof Kadera is an intelligent mind but that does not convey good teaching skill, she had a habit of rambling about less important things and discussion did not follow lecture. Exams were hard, based on prior knowledge. Study guides had 150+ slides of nothing. Grading based on TA competence. Vague rubrics and graded harshly. Take another gen-ed.
I hated this class. It was not all that hard because exams were open note and there wasn't much homework, but the TAs graded really tough on the paper and other assignments. I showed up to every single discussion and got points off my final grade for attendance. Professor Kadera also has a clear agenda that she tries to push on her students.
