Very helpful and explained well.
She can't remember anything she's doing....ever.
Very uncaring towards students and their needs
Very helpful. I enjoyed this class.
Very helpful, willing to spend a whole class on homework questions.
She was so helpful and clear!

She spends to much time on answering homework ?'s and not the sections. She is extreamly intense and really gets into her teaching. Its boring she does everything the long way.
I think she's a really good teacher. I'm more mad at the other kids in my class. They always get up and start to leave 10 minutes before the class is over. Totally bogus!! But I like MacArthur a lot, I really learned a lot so far.
Kelly is awesome!!! She's really funny and a great math teacher... She really makes you understand it and is approachable. She loves what she teaches and is very helpful.
I hated how she used 'nonsensical' all the time. It was like 'nonsensical' was the only vocabulary she learned.
Worst math teacher ever! All she does is answer homework questions instead of teaching the section. She teaches math in a complex and confusing way!
She's a math nerd, pretty much your standard math teacher. She actually likes math, but I hate it so I still wasn't interested. She's not that hard though. There's a ton of homework and it's hardly worth any points. I figured out that one homework was worth like .15% of the total grade or something.
One of the best teachers I have had at the University as well as one of the best classes. She is so clear and concise when teaching. She made me love the class and excited about teaching math.
She's very nice and understanding about mistakes I've made, etc. She's let me make them up and that's helped. I love the fact that she gives you a cheat card on every test. It really helps a lot. She may give tons of homework but most of it you just have to try it and you receive credit for it. That's cool. Overall, she's a great teacher.
Kelly spent too much time answering homework questions if you ask me. But, this was the second time I took this class and I actually understood everything after she would explain it in class.
she is the best math teacher ever
Great teacher. Take summer class from her. She explains everything well enough that you do not have to do any homework.
GREAT at explaining things. Super helpful. Always willing to clarify things. Makes things easy to understand through example. HIGHLY suggest taking class from her.
She was an excellent teacher who had a sense of humor ... mucho important quality to keep people away during early morning calc. She accepts some late homework.
She explains calculus very well. I felt like I understood the material. She is very willing to help answer question and has a lot of patients with people that don't understand things.
The lecture notes made the class easy, and we could also use a note card for the exams.
Amazing, had her for 1010 and 1050, she was absolutely incredible, explained everything crystal clearly and was very helpful when you needed it, try and get classes with her if you can
She was pretty good. She makes you feel really stupid a lot of the time. She is very strict about cell phones and laptops, you cant use them in class. She is helpful and provides extra credit. If you just want a boring teacher that will just tell you the material, don't take her class. She always says weird stuff.
I loved her class! She was fun, and really creative in her teaching methods. If you would rather a lecture, or someone who just teaches out of the book, then don't take this class. Her way is a little confusing, but her office hours are there for a reason, and so is she. An amazing professor, and I HATE math, she made it one of my favorite classes!
She has a syllabus and sticks to it. She never makes anyone feel that their question was dumb. She takes time to explain everything well. Her tests are fair. If you do all of the homework you not only get extra credit but you will be completely prepared for the test. She has a passion for teaching and loves her students and it shows.
never ever freaking taking her class again. she doesn't curve at all..... and fails most of the students.
I've never heard a math professor speak of mathematical grammar before I took Kelly's summer calculus sequence. That's the kind of passion she has for teaching. Grades for quizzes and exams were available just hours after they were was taken. Notecards were allowed in exams. Kelly also has no problem doing short reviews of older material.
And she DOES curve her grades if she can. It's not always helpful (or even noticable) with so much extra credit available, but it can be worth a few percentage points. Just wanted to set the record straight. :)
She challenges you, but if you want to learn Algebra correctly then take this class. Great teacher and doesn't tolerate idiots talking or texting in class. Also, funny and interesting. Best math teacher I've had so far at the U.
BEST MATH PROFESSOR IN THE DEPARTMENT! I took calc I, II and III with her over the summer. With any other prof. I would have gotten way burned out, but she kept things fun, interesting and lively! Even though she taught us 4 hours a day 5 days a week. She actually cares and takes time to answer questions in full complete detial.
Pretty good teacher, she makes it easy to understand the material. The tests are adequate, not super easy or difficult, makes you do a lot of problems for homework though.
Wonderful teacher. Helpful. Funny. Wonderful!
She was a good teacher and grades favorably on tests. However, she moves quickly through material.
I took the four week Calc I class during the summer. It was fast paced, but the explanations and examples given in class were clear. The questions on the quizzes and exams were comparable to the homework problems. She answered questions thoroughly, and was very helpful.
Kelly is amazing. Intelligent, very good at answering questions and using real life examples. Tests are fair, but very challenging especially in the time constraints given. Would not recommend accelerated summer course for people who have not had calc in the past.
I took Kelly's stats class and loved it. Amazing lecturer, great personality, and can actually teach a topic in multiple ways so it's easy to understand. Printed notes makes it easy to follow along in class. If you study and do your homework you'll get a good grade. Highly recommend this teacher.
I hate math, so any math teacher that can actually make me enjoy a class deserves a good recommendation :)
My friends and I would walk into class, sit down, and listen to Kelly who moves VERY fast, but when we walked out we had such a crystal clear knowledge on the subject. She is very helpful and will answer ALL of your questions. She should be your ONLY choice for this class.
One of the best math teachers I've had. She helps outside class and is personal. Accelerated Calculus courses are crazy, but are capable with her teaching and hard dedication.
AWFUL CLASS! Worst I have taken at the U by far!!! She moves super fast and picks obvious favorites. Calls out students and puts them on the spot if she thinks their question is "dumb". Not flexible or concerned about students who seek help outside of class. Unclear and uninteresting.
Kelly is the best math teacher I have ever had. She is very clear in how she explains concepts; and she puts the class notes online so we can print and bring them to class for notes. She has office hours and will answer additional Qs after class. There is a lot of homework and a weekly quiz. If you ask questions and be engaged, you'll do very well.
AMAZING professor. I took business calculus from her and she was incredible. Very easy to get an A if you come to class and do the homework, plus she helps you actually retain the material. I highly recommend her!
She wrote the textbook - thus everything was SUPER clear. No trickiness. Go to class.
Took her accelerated calc 3 class over the summer. She flies through the materials. you get behind couple days, consider taking this class again or drop. She will not let you half ass. She is super smart and explains clearly. Quiz everyday and everything is open note. if I remember right, A is 95-96% which is near impossible for calc class IMO.
My first professor back in 2008 and glad to know she is still teaching and loved her teaching methods an classes recommend her in any class she teaches
Worst class. This instructor gives difficult and tricky tests with low-test scores on average and does not curve the grades. She doesn’t motivate students with extra credits and her exams are unnecessary difficult and long. She’s disrespectful to students.
She gives new material up until the test date. No calculators! Tests are usually on Fridays so we don’t have time to prepare over the weekends. She gives difficult and tricky tests with low-test scores on average and does not curve the grades. She doesn’t motivate students with extra credits and her exams are unnecessary difficult and long.
She is terrible, she moves way fast, calls people out in class, has favorites and if she does not like you good luck. Don't take her class. She can be mean and scary so people wont stand up to her.
Amazing teacher! Her class if flipped: you watch lectures online then come to class for clarification and practice. There are quizzes everyday. She expects a lot of work but she provides support to help you succeed. I have already signed up for her 1220 class :)
She is hands down the best Math teacher there is... Kelly will push you to new limits as a student, it is a challenge but worth every cent of your tuition if your here to learn.
Kelly is a fantastic teacher for an incredibly hard class. I took the four week accelerated Calc 2 and worked my tail off and got a 89.2 which she bumped up to an A-. I've had a few great math teachers at the U, but I wouldn't take Calc 2 from any other teacher.
This professor was not helpful at all. Though I do understand that this was an online course, however, she was not helpful and assigned A LOT of homework. Reviews hardly helped and covered about 1% of the actual exam. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
Great Proffessor
Honestly the worst class I've ever taken, the tests are insane. If you are not an engineering or computer science major do not take this class from the head of the math department.
This class was awful. There are hard weekly quizzes and online daily quizzes. She trys to be helpful but it comes across very cold. The class is flipped so if you dont want to be taught in class, do not use this teacher.
By far the clearest professor I've had. She's got a bit of a military background so I can see why you might think she was intimidating if you were shy or insecure but she'd never intentionally belittle someone. She's the type of professor that cares enough about her students to learn everyone's names regardless of class size
Easy as pie if you've had some background in precalculus but if you haven't, be prepared to work hard! She's an excellent teacher and explains everything very well! Best math teacher I've ever had. She's also willing to take most of the class to go over homework. Do the assignments & quizzes & you'll pass the tests!
Kelly is awesome! She has notes you can print off so you only need to write down the example problems. If you don't understand a concept she'll come up with a simpler example problem to help you understand it FULLY. She also sends out a weekly email of encouragement. Her class always gets better grades than others. Weekend quizzes were time consumi
I took this calc 2 class over the summer so it was shortened to about 4 weeks. The daily quizzes are not that hard if you do the homework and pay attention in class. You go over a ton of problems in class. Kelly has this magical way to "tell you how it is". She is gifted at her job.
She is an amazing prof and she is passionate about her teaching (this is rare). Her style is something like this, she goes over everything clearly, if you don't study it'll feel like it's fast. People who finds her class tough are usually people who are not strong in math already and neglect doing the homework. She is helpful but you need to ask.
Awesome teacher and awesome person. Took from her over the summer for calc 2 and 3. She is great with names and really shows how everything comes together. If you choose not to take from her you're truly missing out! Thanks Kelly!
Annoyed with some of the class policies such as you cant turn in an assignment a minute late (due first 5 mins of class). No way to print the assignments online (must attend lab to pick up assignment). Those were the only two "bad" things about the course that I felt were unnecessary (teaching responsibility?). Best math teacher I have had.
Literally the best math professor I've ever had in my life.
Best instructor I have had so far in my first year. She did a phenomenal job at ensuring that you actually understood the content. Math is my weakest subject (doesn't help that I also have ADD), but the split classroom setting coupled with her review really drilled the content into my mind. Go to class + watch videos + study a bit B+ or A-
She is a great professor! she cares about her students and tests are fair. Easy online assignments. GO TO CLASS! You will learn a lot in class.
Kelly defines tough but fair. She is not afraid to fail you but doesn't try to. Always gives as many points as realistically possible on homework and tests. Impressively, she will probably remember your name in a class of 70+ students. I had her for calc 2 and 3 and she remembered my name even though our calc 2 class had over 80 people taking it.
I rated it hard because I took her one month calc 2 course in the summer. -dont expect a "dumbed" down easy summer course. I absolutely love the intuitve thinking she helps you develope about calculus concepts. I Highly recommend her to all STEM majors taking calc 1-3.
Kelly is stuck in her ways, old guard teacher who takes her military roots to heart. A cold hypocrite who doesn't give a crap about your success over her genius. Unless you got loads of time and want to teach yourself stay away from Kelly
Super nice, very knowledgeable and she has great lectures! I learned a ton in her class, she is really good at getting the class to understand the material. There is a lot of homework, both mandatory and optional, but if you do it all getting an A on the test is no problem. Would take her again in a heartbeat if I hadn't switched schools.
very rude.
I'm certain that I'm not the only person who doesn't like Kelly. She will destroy your confidence in math.
She is a very good instructor, and makes you work hard for your grade. The only reason you would not like her is if you don't do your homework or don't show up to class.
I would be a math major if she taught every math class. I was NEVER good at math in my life, started college off in math 1010 and failed it the first time. Took calculus from another professor and failed it the first time. I then took calc 1, 2, and 3 from Kelly and did great. (she knew my learning style?) My attititude towards math took a 180.
I loved this class and this prof, she cares so much about her students success and her knowledge of calc is amazing. It took a lot of time to do the homework and everything required, but I really feel like she made the subject accessible for everyone.
I loved Kelly, but I wouldn't have passed without in class work and extra credit. She really wants you to learn the subject so don't expect to be able to sleep through this class, even if you've taken calculus before. Her class style is flipped which I really struggled with, but is totally willing to help you succeed still.
A head injury early in my semester caused me to miss a few weeks of classes. Kelly was the only professor who did not work with me after I explained my situation. The work I missed was the difference between two letter grades. I'm going to have to retake this course because I didn't get the help I needed. I highly recommend avoiding this professor.
She was a great professor. In fact, the best math teacher I have ever had in my life. I've never really been good at connecting with teachers, but She made an effort on her side to get to know me. This was a flipped class so we didn't have to attend class, but in class she made sure to clarify material students did not understand well.
Kelly is by far the most amazing teacher I have every had. She does expect a lot, but also puts in so much effort on her end. There is a daily quiz and weekly assignment which isn't too bad. The tests are very fair and graded generously with partial credit. She tries to learn everyones' names and one of the most personable and caring teachers!
Great teacher. We had a flipped classroom where we watched lectures on our own and did practice problems in class. She gives you weekly assignments and daily quizzes, then thorough reviews. Do those, and it's an easy A.
Kelly was great. She worked with every student and made sure everyone understood everything.
the summer calc intensive different from normal semester calculus from her she is fair above all she will spend TONS of time with you to help you learn but due to being given the answers to homework and tests afterward NO LATE WORK ACCEPTED. however, she is amazing when it comes to accommodations (quiet room etc)
calculus intensive (1-3) is a wild ride, listen when she says you should only do this class 4ish hr of in class time quiz every day midterms e very Friday no outside homework though, in class quizzes and homework not collected. fair to a fault (no sob stories accepted) but it makes sense as you get the answers/ test keys nearly right away
Love her. She's incredibly caring and kind while still being no-nonsense. She makes teaching an art. Incredibly challenging class though so prepare to work hard and study. The flipped class makes a lot of sense for a math class. Material is covered very quickly but you will learn a ton!
Kelly is the best professor I've ever had. She really stops and makes sure people understand what she's talking about. There is no question that is too stupid (even if it has been asked in 4 different ways). I took her calc 3 summer intensive course. Very difficult. She loves to throw curve balls on the exams. Watch the online videos, examples help
4 week calc 3 class. It isn't hard if you watch the lecture videos & go to class. She makes it as interactive as possible. Group quizzes, calls on students, etc. It made me feel better about my understanding knowing I wasn't alone when she called on students who didn't know the answer. I definitely felt closer to my classmates because of it.
I took all three intensive summer calculus classes from Kelly. She is a phenomenal professor. The material wasn't easy and the class moved really fast but it was a great experience. She made herself available for questions and made sure everyone understood things before moving on. A very challenging but fantastic math experience.
OK this was a horrible experience. Professor was non-understanding and was horrible at working with students. I am Econ Major with 3.8 GPA and was taking this course to hurry and complete a business minor. The only reason I did alright was because of previous exposure to course material. Professor was just not connected with the students in class.
One of the best professors I ever had. Took Calculus I, II, & III from her and I could tell she worked really hard and her passion for math is contagious. She creates a good learning environment and helped me realize how much I love math. Highly recommended! Her class is flipped which means you watch lecture vids, then do problems in class.
Kelly is an amazing teacher! You can tell she is very passionate about math and wants her students to succeed. We did have a few assignments due every week and she does have you watch her lecture videos before class. She offers extra credit at the beginning of the semester! super easy, do it!
I'm glad to have gotten Kelly as a professor for my first semester. She actively tries to learn your name if you participate in class and takes time to help students understand difficult math concepts. She does a flipped class setting where you practice in class and learn through videos but she provides many resources to help her students.
I like Math. Why I don't like this class. Weekly Schedule: Lecture Video at home 1 hr, Quiz 1 hour, Un-graded but necessary homework 2-3 hrs, class (where we go over maybe 5 worthless examples) 1.5hrs, weekly assignment 3-4 hours. IF, you do everything she prescribes you'll spend 25+ hours a week. Also, 3 midterms each one consisting of two tests.
Kelly's a good teacher but everything is done on her time. Daily quiz's due at 12:30pm, docks lots of points, like A to B+ for what is called, "math grammar" and in the end we spend a lot of time doing menial busy work than really working the problems. I feel she cares, but a lot of time is wasted and in the end I'd prefer a standard curriculum.
Kelly has over 20 years of experience teaching math. She was a software engineer before she started teaching so her logic is sound. She is up there with one of the best math professors/teachers I've had. Her office hours are extremely useful and she is dedicated to seeing her students succeed.
This was the best math class that I have ever taken in my life and it is all thanks to her. The videos and note packets are extremely useful. The lectures are incredibly important but she goes at a pace that the class can keep up. If you ever get the chance to take a class with her, I highly recommend.
I went in to this class hearing that Kelly was the best teacher in the math department for calculus. I left this class a firm believer that she is. She makes an incredibly difficult subject immensely easier to understand and I'm definitely not the only one who feels this way. If you ever have the opportunity to learn from her, do not pass it up.
Kelly puts an extreme amount of effort in her classes. She is very community oriented which is very refreshing in a college atmosphere. She is an extremely tough grader, especially on "Math Grammar", but she often makes up for it with opportunities for extra credit. Having Kelly as a professor is by far the greatest experience I've had in math.
Kelly is by far the best professor I've ever had the chance to take a class with. She really cares about her students, and does whatever she can to help that student succeed in her class. I'll definitely be taking another class with her!!
She's the kind of person that will have hundreds of students and actually learn everyones name. She's the only professor I've ever had that taught me more math than I learned reading the book. Incredibly intelligent. If you don't understand a concept, she can explain it in several different ways. Excellent in every way
Kelly is so wonderful at teaching. She is very well respected, encourages students to speak up during class, she is so understanding but still has strict rules students need to follow, and she very clearly explains what she expects if her students.
Kelly is hands down the best professor at the University of Utah. She has studied/studying how mathematics is taught, and has developed a course structure that allows every type of learning to work. Guided notes, online videos, and in-class lectures that are very informative. She sets clear expectations on what to know and what exams will be like.
Easily the best math professor I have ever had. Kelly is amazing, and she does everything in her power to help you succeed. Her lectures and guided notes are very informative. Although there is a lot of work required outside of class (long weekly assignments, online lecture videos, etc.), I thought it was worth it. I would recommend her to anyone.
Kelly is easily the greatest professor/teacher I have ever had. She explains everything in a way that makes sense and actually gets you interested in learning more about the concept, even if you are not a big math fan. She does a great job at encouraging a sense of community among the students. She really cares about the success of her students.
Absolutely fantastic professor. She noticed earlier in the term that I was really stressed out during tests so we met in her office and she gave me a bunch of pointers for better test taking. Really encourages finding multiple ways to solve problems, I'm taking Calc III with her next semester.
Kelly is hands down the best math professor I've ever had (like by an order of magnitude). I was continually amazed by how much effort and care she puts into the class and supporting her students. She really knows her stuff too, but more importantly knows how to effectively convey this knowledge to students. Amazing!
Literally created this account to review her. Taking another class from her this semester. She makes all the material really easy to learn and has plenty of office hours/TA hours. 10/10 would recommend.
Kelly really, really cares about her students. She provides a lot of resources and she's incredibly helpful during her lectures. The material is difficult and you do have study, however, she makes it really easy to understand. Pay attention during lectures do the daily quizzes and you will do well in the course. :)
Best math teacher
Took Calc 2 from her and signed up for her class again because she's probably my favorite professor I've ever had. If you have the chance to take Calc from her do it. She really cares about her students. Also the workload is really balanced which I like.
awful and rude!!!
Kelly is the best! Definitely recommend taking her calculus courses, its clear she puts a lot of time and effort into optimizing the learning environment and helping the student succeed. Attendance is not necessarily mandatory but it is a must.
Kelly is an amazing person! I took her accelerated calc courses over the summer (calc 1,2,3) and it was the best math experience I've ever had. She really cares about student success and will do all she can to help you. She's always accessible outside of class good office hours, and happy to help via email. All I can say is take her classes!
One of the best professors I've ever had. Cares deeply for the students, and constantly stops to gauge how well we're following along. She has a way of communicating the material so that you can't misunderstand it. Excellent.
Kelly is a GEM. they should honestly make her the dean of the math department! her teaching style is the best so far and her class is my favorite math class i've taken here at the U. her tests are hard but it's not something that you haven't seen before. I just wish she taught every math class I took. I recommend taking calculus with her only.
If you don't enjoy lectures, and are fine/like groupwork, then Kelly is DEFINITELY the prof for you. Don't get me wrong, she is an AMAZING person (love her to pieces, she is so nice and understanding!), but she goes a little overboard with the groupwork and weekly assignments. Very verbal teaching style.
Kelly is the best prof in the whole school tbh. So caring and the class is honestly made to be pretty fair. She has extra credit you can earn on every test and assignment, so your grade doesn't tank. The daily quizzes can be annoying but overall this class easier than most other calc classes at the U. Definitely take Kelly!
Kelly is not only an amazing professor but also an amazing person. She genuinely wants you to learn to enjoy math and tries to make the classroom a place for everyone to learn. I was intimidated to take linear algebra, but Kelly made the experience as manageable as possible. If you have the chance, take it from Kelly she's the best Math professor
She is an absolutely fantastic person and professor. I went from a horrible experience in calculus to actually understanding the material. She is a great lecturer and is very effective at teaching difficult units. She is also very kind to all her students. She actually cares and you can tell that from a mile away. You will love her and the class.
Kelly is awesome! Her lectures are very engaging and effective explaining math in a new way. She also obviously cares for the students. She encourages participation, but uses a system that doesn't force any nervous students to speak up. Taking her in my first semester was a great introduction to college. Take any class with her if it all possible.
(This class was the 4 week accelerated summer course) As someone who suffers from high test anxiety and math fear, this was the best class I could have ever taken to succeed. Kelly is a caring, and a top notch teacher. The group quizzes were so helpful in my learning, and I think this format helped me tremendous in my grade and understanding. 10/10
Greatest professor all time!
Kelly is absolutely amazing. I loved taking Calc 1 and 2 with her. I took them both as the one month accelerated version during the summer. It was a ton of math, I definitely did a lot of calculus in my dreams but it was worth it. Kelly truly cares about her students. Besides teaching she has done a lot of research into how to help students succeed
I enjoyed this class! Professor MacArthur is amazing and cares about her students a lot. Her lectures were great, better than just reading. Weekly quizzes and discussions were very helpful so make sure to participate in those. If you do the practice exams before exams, complete all homework, and reach out to TAs/LAs when confused, you will do well.
Kelly's the best! I took Calc 2 from her and haven't regretted it at all. She provides opportunities to make up points you miss on quizzes. Probably not as hard as other calc 2 courses but I am very glad I took it from her. Felt like I understood it a lot better than calc 1.
I HATE math with a burning passion and Kelly made it super bearable. I finished this class with a high A without having to make myself miserable all semester. The assignments are reasonable, you can use notes on tests, and she has LOTS of easy extra credit opportunities. As long as you put in the time, you will absolutely succeed in this course.
I hate and am horrible at math but I LOVED Professor MacArthur. Her expectations and feedback is so clear and helpful, and I never felt judged for struggling to understand a concept. She was super accessible and had great TAs, also did a great job of creating a class community with the online medium, felt very involved. Would definitely recommend.
Great class! On every exam you could use one page of notes, front and back, and having through the testing period you got split into groups to discuss your answers with your classmates. She grades mostly on work so even if your final answer is wrong, you can still get most of the point if you show your work! Watch the lectures and you'll be fine.
Professor MacArthur is really good at explaining things. I took the class in an asynchronous style so I had to watch lecture videos posted to canvas and complete the assignments. I was really worried about this but the videos were super helpful. She is also super accessible outside of class if you need extra help.
Kelly is the best math teacher I ever had. If I had any gripe is sometimes she can be a little dry and sometimes she takes some stuff too seriously I think, but the upside is she loves what she does and she is absolutely virtuosic at it. Highly highly recommend for anything.
