she is amazing and she writes the easiest exams EVER!
Best teacher ever. How good was she? She makes what could be a very dry subject actually funny and enjoyable. Good tests, easy to talk to. One of the best there is.
She was pretty good, course was intersting. Problems with WebCT in her course, but she made sure no one lost marks because of it on her internet quizzes.
Very creative and comprehensive. Patient and doesn't mind spending the time going over material until the student understands it. Good sense of humor adds to learning experience. Tough on tests, but willing to adjust to overall pace of learning of class.
Superb teacher; effective, funny, fair, and very helpful.
Great prof! Interesting lectures; she posts lecture notes to make course easier to follow; always has time to help students; made the course and material fun, interesting, and informative.
Wonderful professor... and hilarious! Makes a boring subject very un-boring, and stimulates further interest in the subject (in my case, Greek and Roman literature). I highly reccomend.
Really fun! Great Prof! I'd let her teach me again and again! Tests are fairly easy if you know your stuff, all straight forward!
Best professor ever. She is seriously amazing, and I would do anything to have her as my prof.
Great prof! She gives clear lectures and posts the notes for students. She's accessable outside of class and always willing to answer any questions. An excellent professor.
Taking this class as an option in a night class, i though it would be hard to stay awake. She takes a potentially boring subject and makes it fun and very un-boring. I recommend her to anyone.
Her marking schema is ridiculous! As are her way too many assignments and way too many tests.. oh ya there is also way too many required readings (10 text books!) I am exhausted by her class and have very little time for my other classes much less a life. Way too hard for a 200 level.
best teacher ever: interesting, clear and teaches quickly so you can leave early
She is a total HAM, and has a grating way of discussing grammitical concepts. However, she really does teach you Latin--she hammers it all into your brain in class, and thus minimizes the work you have to do on your own (which you still have to do).
I loved Latin before having her as a professor. Not sure if it was her or the constant barrage of homework that left no time for other courses. Her exams are fairly easy if you can memorize verb forms and recent grammar studied. I wouldn't recommend her to anyone. Take Kroeker if you can.
Kelly is my favorite prof! I had her for Class 221 as well and loved both classes. Her teaching method and her notes are the most effective I have ever experienced, and she makes her expectations VERY clear. She's got a great sense of humour and often explains concepts in modern-day terms, which allows you to internalize the material. Very Helpful.
One of the best profs. Funny, very clear and interesting lectures. Marks a bit tough but lets you know ahead of time exactly what's she expecting. Very helpful in and out of class for anything you need. Friendly, approachable and obviously loves Classics and wants to make sure you enjoy it too.
She's a pretty good prof if you're not taking a lot of classes in a semester, cause she'll load you up somthing painful. Keep ahead in her class as much as possible, and its ok if you cant do all the readings, she's great when it comes to analyzing them.
She is a NOT NICE PERSON. she has no emotions and does not listen what so ever. I hate her with a passion.
She is fine, but she goes a mile a minute and expects that everyone is getting everything on the first time around. She doesnt understand that latin will not be easy for ervyone to learn so she should take it down a little. It would be nice if there was more time where you could ask her about the homework cuz she less than 1 hour of office hours!
She was the reason I started bringing a laptop to class, as she can talk so fast its almost scary! She is very helpful though, and by the end of term you will forget that you're not Roman (cause we're Romans, and we dont want a monarchy! We want elephants in hot dog buns!). She does a really fun and fascinating class.
She is a phenomenal Latin teacher, if you plan to take latin, she shuld be your prof!!
Okay class. Insane amount of reading but covered in class quite well. She talks very fast and leaves no time for questions, non-stop work all the time. Marks hard on papers but exams are very fair and quite easy (gives the exact question for part of the test). Helpful outside class but expect lots of notes and tons of readings.
DEFINATELY ELEPHANTS IN HOTDOG BUNS!!! I wish she could teach all my classics classes. Her Intro to Rome class was GREAT! She posts her notes that you can print off before class which you can then just add onto. It really helps cause she does give you alot of points and talks quite quickly. Great personality though, really seems to enjoy teaching.
awesome teacher, easy class. She assigns lots of readings but she tells you everything you need to know in class. I never read the readings and I had an A going into the final, so don't be afraid of her crappy text readings!
excellent prof. she definitely has a passion for roman history and it shows. exams are very easy and straight out of her lectures; don't bother with the textbook. she does give a lot of information all at once, so make sure you print off her lecture notes ahead of time.
I've taken about 5 classes with Kelly and I loved every one of them. She talks fast so make sure to print lecture notes off the night before. Tests are pretty easy and she does mark hard on essays, however, she is always willing to help you with them! Great prof. Take any class she's teaching!
She's an amazing prof, whenever I see her name listed for a class in either Latin or Classics, I make sure to sign up for the class. She's friendly, she's nice, and she will always treat you with respect. She's totally deserving of the windowed office.
Prof. MacFarlane is an awesome prof!! She made latin fun and easy to understand. I recommend her in any class she is teaching. She is very enthusiastic about the subject and her love for teaching is truly evident and hard to miss. She gives hilarious history tidbits, livening up the course and making it more interesting.
She was great. She knows Latin very well and motivates students. She is very friendly, which is something important when you teach. I really enjoyed my experience studying Latin with her. I would recommend her for anyone interested in learning Latin.
A wonderful prof with a real passion for the subject she is teaching. She has a talent for explaining things and is friendly and helpful. She also tells interesting stories and makes the class a lot more fun.
She is sooooo awesome. The course was very interesting and her notes were useful. The exams were straight forward. Attend each class because she'll somtimes give out exam questions. Her stories are hilarious and she realtes it to what you are learing. I wish I could take all of my courses with her as Prof. PS: she loves Star Treck.
Very good, passionate about what she does.
She is very knowledgeable and good at her topic. Was not a fan of her set-up for lectures and found she talked too fast. Her tests were alright but I found her written response to be marked harshly. For a 100 level course, she expected a lot from her students.
She was an eexcellent prof, i recomend her to anyone who wants a class they can really enjoy. She clearly loves her subject alot and is really knowledgeable. She gave interesting assignments and was not a very hard marker.
She is passionate about this topic, and its infectious- she also makes it relevant to students. You have to write what she says and she talks fast. You also have to show up every day if you want a chance of passing- she knows this class is sometimes seen as a 'crap-course' for easy marks. I loved her and her class!!!
wow! I loved her! AWESOME! I wish she was teaching all of my classes! By far the best prof i have had yet! Going to class is important but sometime when a lot of people don't show up she gives exam hints so it is good when people don't come sometimes (not that her exams were really hard or anything)
She isnt the worst prof I've had, but she is up there. Her class was soo boring it was painful to attend. She must have an ability not to breathe because she does not stop speaking for 50mins. She is very unhelpful and disrespectful when you ask questions. She wastes so much time talking about how she needs to speed up nothing gets done! Avoid!!
She's okay. She's pretty funny, and her lectures are pretty clear. She appears scatterbrained at times, and can always relate a lecture to some current tv show. She's VERY quick at responding to email questions, which is really helpful when you've left a paper til the last minute. Very picky marker though- need very detailed answers on tests.
Tough to listen to over the course of an hour & 20min lecture.
Best Prof EVER!!!
The Good:She is passionate about teaching and tries to brainwash us into becoming classicists. She has a sense of humour and likes students. She's a good dresser. She gives plenty of easy,"money in the bank" assignments. The Bad:she goes into great detail pointing out the weaknesses of your papers, but for strengths says"you brought up some good points"
She's a really fun and quirky teacher - I loved going to her class. Printing out the notes she posts and adding to them is helpful. She marks very hard on papers but gives good suggestions for improvement - just make sure that you do your research. Exams are fairly easy but fairly detail-orientated, so do your readings and study her notes.
Dr. MacFarlane is an amazing prof. She is interesting, funny, helpful and she will not let you slack off. She designs the class to make sure you learn, rather than just pass a test and forget everything.
She's very funny, and makes the class go by super fast. I actually kind of look forward to her class.
Very poor prof. The worst Ive had in two years of experience. She was very scatter brained and actually erred on a few of the facts of history she taught, plus she likes to instill her own subjective opinion, which is misleading.
She is not a good professor for languages. She makes a ton of mistakes that are detrimental to learning the language, even when she is copying directly from a textbook. The homework also tends to have many spelling/grammatical mistakes. My interest in the language is gone because of her. This is the first language I've ever had trouble with.
Wonderfully clear. Very good pedagogue. Never boring because her teaching is full of variety and energy. Great sense of humor. Wish she would teach all language courses. Interest level skyrocketed after taking her course.
She has to be the most genuine professor I have come across in all my 3 years of uni. She's so funny and extremely helpful and goes over concepts until we understand them. Loved her!
Kelly MacFarlane was useless, rude, and awful. I do not know how on earth people gave good marks to this woman. I was sick recuperating from heart surgery and she was not only NOT helpful, but rude and could not have cared less about my condition. I got a C+ in this class and I am an A student. She is scatterbrained and obsessed with zombies AVOID!
Avoid this woman. If you want a feminist saturated class go for it. Class is more of a platform for her to inject her own subjective beliefs on you. She would even teach wrong facts to us! Scatterbrained is a good word for her. I tried to get help often and she was always rude, and eager to get you out. Useless is a good word for her.
I do not know what happened here. The positives: Easy weekly quiz, easy M/C on tests. The negatives, Incomprehensible, all over the place, tries to be funny (but fails spectacularly), hard written and paragraph answers on tests and marks horribly on essays. Sometimes forgets what she was talking about. Mildly nuts, avoid at all costs.
How did people give such great marks to her? She is helpful? Last few posts say scatterbrained. Absolute truth. She would make mistakes on homework and very rude if you try to get help. She must have changed because she is way different than these positive posts. I got a good mark, but in no way is she what people said she was. Beware.
She was very interesting; not in a good way though. She was mildly insane and scatterbrained. Truly I am shocked others have rated her so well. She must have changed as she was not helpful, would be rude, and try to get rid of you if you came to her. Not to mention her warping of historical facts and ultra-feminist views, avoiding would be a good i
She is a bit crazy, not going to lie. If you don't agree with her warping of historical facts and attempts to subjugate you to her sometimes wayward views, she hates you. She was rude when you tried to get help. Talks a lot about Zombies. Best to avoid.
Great prof! She makes it extremely worthwhile to go to class and her stories provide a great way to remember historical facts. She is very funny and immensely helpful, and does not mind meeting students outside her office hours. Wonderful!
Out of my four years in university, she is one of the best professors I have ever had.
She is very eccentric in composure but it does not effect her teaching abilities. She is a great teacher, and what you may think is rude, is her odd humour and flightiness. She gives you days in advance for quizzes and homework. Very helpful, she will stop to go over your question in class. Also forgiving with late assignments.
From reading the comments, Dr.MacFarlane may be a bit scatterbrained, but in an endearing way; i havent experienced any kind of 'rudeness', and her humour makes a potentially boring subject interesting..Unlike some profs i have, she's passionate about what she teaches, esp. Classics...no prof is PERFECT, but i would definitely recommend her:)
She's alright. As pretty much every post has said...she is scatterbrained at best. I don't like her teaching style as she tends to talk about the same things over and over ("can we trust evidence?" at least once/class) and I feel stressed coming after lecture because of her flightiness. Fine in terms of info though and seems nice. Checks email.
fantastic prof. expects a lot (believes in rote memorization & constant drills), but you will gain a solid grip on the language. grading scale is hard (93 is an A), but tests are fair. Daily quizzes, so if you are late you will get a 0 & she doesnt accept excuses, only hard work. Avoid if you want an easy A, take if you want to know the language
WHAT A GREAT PROF! Made me love studying ancient civilizations! "Always question the evidence!" is her credo! Easy weekly quizzes, 2 papers (marked fairly but no easy A's), 1 easy midterm and 1 final exam. I was doing my readings assiduously and taking extra notes with a classmate, which was very efficient and yielded great results! A+
AMAZING PROF! Was a very interesting class and probably one of my favorite options I have taken thus far. Exams are fair, but the grading scheme is high.. 91% for me was a B+ so you really have to work in her class. Papers were also marked fair. And overall, she is great, and also very funny. Bonus: she loves zombies as much as I do!!
Kelly is an extremely fair teacher - she expects a lot of memorizing and hard work from her students. Quizzes and homework assignments were relatively easy and ensured you continued to build up knowledge of the language. She was very entertaining and approachable, just stay away if you want an easy mark.
Interesting lady, but tends to be easily distracted by her thoughts. Knows her material and makes the subject matter interesting. I found her funny and always willing to help. Good for a laugh and makes the class a pleasure to go to on Friday afternoons. Material is interesting and assignments are fairly graded and handed back in a timely fashion.
She was extremely unhelpful. When writing a paper for her i recommend using simple english as if it were to an elementary student - any words too complicated will get you docked marks even though they are real words. Papers were too short to get a point across. Mostly she just likes to hear herself talk.
Great prof, very clear that Classics was her passion. Her exams were not hard at all as long as you kept up with the readings. That being said, if you aren't a fan of English classes, you might dislike this as well. The reading responses were to be short (1 page) so you need to be CONCISE. The marking scheme however was a bit off, a 90-92 was A- ..
Shes an awesome prof. I love her. I love going to her class and I am looking forward to more of her classes. Shes helpful and even answers the slightest doubts. She loves zombies ahhahaha
Taking her class made my life so hard. I couldn't pay attention to what she was saying because she talks way too fast and stutters every two words. Her classes became so boring and I hated coming to her class. Her notes are horrible. She doesn't reply to your e-mails so asking questions when you needed her help was impossible.AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS
great teacher, mildly scatterbrained, and don't ask her to write, but incrediby knowledgable, incredibly helpful, and wonderfully interesting when you listen to her.
A really nice and helpful lady. All her notes are provided but you MUST add to them so you understand them later. She speaks quickly but you only pick out what is important. You must have an interest in the course material or you will hate it.Highly enjoyable and interesting. She is helpful but you have to ask for it.
It's great to have a prof so passionate about her field! She is slightly bonkers but in the best way. Keeps you engaged, makes you laugh, and knows what she's talking about. The only negative was I found her midterm too long for the time given. But she's a great lecturer and she's extremely energetic. I recommend her for sure!
One of the best profs I have had! She presents the material in a very interesting, engaging, and clear manner. Her assignments and exams are very fair. She encourages critical thought regarding the material as well. Over all, a great prof, I highly recommend her!
My best prof ever. Her lectures are both engaging and very helpful. If you go to class and put in the effort you can do very well. Her exams are very fair, she gives you a study guide with all the topics and questions you will be asked. I can't wait to take another class with her
Awesome professor! Really knows her material and keeps students engaged in lectures. Very interesting course as well! Marks fairly and lays out her expectations clearly.
Wonderful Prof! She goes through the material quickly, but is very thorough on what she's teaching. Definitely need to attend every class and do your assignments, but she grades fairly and will help you if you need it. Gives more assignments than other section Profs, but you'll benefit from the extra practice.
Pleasant and intelligent. Faces a daunting task with introductory Latin, but does her best to keep to keep it interesting. Tests are difficult, but there is not other way to learn Latin, given the voluminous masses of forms. Very passionate about Classics, and eager to help. Highly recommended.
The best teacher I've had in this subject. You have to attend the lectures but she makes it worth your while as she's always entertaining and informative. Always replies to e-mails and is up for talking before or after class. She really cares about her students and wants them to be happy and succeed. Such a great prof.
Kelly is absolutely fantastic!!! She was very understanding and helpful when I had difficulties. If you put in the effort, attend lecture and read the material, you'll do well. I feel like those who didn't do well and who didn't like her did not put in the effort to do well and are clearly bitter.
Simply amazing prof and the material is really interesting (World Mythology). She talks really fast, but you get used to it. Her provided notes are terrible, so you have to write your own. Is a good marker + provides useful comments. Textbook required for 2 essays. She has SUPER HIGH CUT-OFFS THOUGH. Like a B 86%.
A great prof! Super knowledgeable and you can tell she wants her students to succeed. She talks fast but is really funny. She appreciates participation and will give marks for it. I will definitely take another one of her classes.
Macfarlane made Latin so fun to learn and accessible to everyone! She does force participation but you always feel like you're in a safe environment. She is fair, and knowledgable and always keeps class interesting. Expect a lot of mini quizzes here and there but these are grade boosters and very helpful. Definitely my favourite prof of the term!
After a terrible time trying to learn French back in high school, I skeptically entered Latin 101 to fill a degree requirement and was pleasantly surprised! Kelly provided a fun and fast-paced environment that challenged me just the right amount. She is a generous marker and an animated lecturer.
I couldnt make it to the majority of the classes due to personal reasons and she gave me several opportunities to make up for it- and gave the whole class MULTIPLE extensions for the same paper- it was great i love her! However, the lectures were mostly just review of what you read at home so- attendance isnt the biggest deal.
Cares about students. She doesn't just want you to pass she wants you to really GET the material. Once (104 level class) she brought in a replica gladiator helmet and shield and swords to demonstrate pronouns . As long as you pay attention, make vocabulary flash cards and practice you'll come out speaking basic Latin. Expect to be called on lots :)
MacFarlane really wants her students to succeed, she uses different examples to try and make sense of the different myths and to keep interest among them.
Great prof
Kelly MacFarlane thoroughly understands Latin, and teaches it at the introductory level very well. Latin is a bizarre course. She has cute little jokes. If you take the course, throw yourself at it with some gusto, it really helps.
While Kelly was a good prof (quirky and fun, though she did speak fast), I learned that I just don't like or get Latin itself, so this quickly became my least favourite class. However, that wasn't Kelly's fault; she was very available for help, but because I don't need Latin for my degree, I didn't seek it out. I liked Kelly, just not her subject!
Kelly really takes advantage of the small class size, connects on a personal level and makes things fun. Although she can talk really fast and in random spurs of thought, she's a really great prof. The txtbook is hard to understand so dont just read the textbook to catch up, 99% lecture based.
Absolutely amazing! She is so sweet and such a caring professor. She went out of her way to help me when i needed it. Her exams are fair not too hard, not too easy. Defs need to study. It was a tough class, but keep going over the lessons everyday, and you should be good. Go to Class!! She explains things way better than the textbook ever does!
Kelly is PHENOMENAL! I can't think of a single prof that cares about their students success as much as Kelly does about hers. She doesn't just want you to pass- she wants everyone to get A's. She is so kind, and absolutely hilarious. She makes a point of it to remember every students name in the class, and is always will to help anyone who seeks it
She's a great prof and is really caring of her students, the grading scale as most classics classes are is pretty tough but if you pay attention you'll be fine. I would strongly recommend her. Best professor I've had so far in the UofA.
She is caring, funny and great at teaching Ancient Greek and Latin! The class was well organized, with quizzes and homework per week. The midterm and final are not cumulative and fair in difficulty. Lecture helps a lot especially if you have not been exposed to Latin before. Memorize the Vocab and the meaning and you should be fine!
Kelly is amazing- can't praise her enough! However, this class is HARD! Do not take it based on the teacher alone. She is a very generous grader, but the material is tough and the curve is HIGH. Only take this if you have the time to commit to studying. Quiz/assignment every week (easy); Midterm (hard); Final (medium difficulty).
Great Prof. Assignments were a fun and easy way to boost your mark. The tests were hard though. If you've taken Greek and Latin in the past, you will probably do well. However, if you are a science student, this class is very helpful but it will require a tonne of studying. Take this course if you can commit a lot of time to it. High curve.
Professor MacFarlane is just the sweetest! She is hilarious, witty and smart. I really liked how she designed the course. Overall the course was easy and engaging. Her approach to learning language to me seemed like a repetition base learning which I liked. SHE IS AWESOME TAKE HER IF U CAN!!!
Kelly is honestly just the best. Yeah, Latin is hard but she makes it really enjoyable. Test are very fair and she marks more than generously. There are many HW assignments but they are very beneficial and only take about 10-20 mins (Plus they are usually very similar to the tests). She is hilarious and kind. 100% would recommend.
Dr. MacFarlane is the best teacher I've ever had in my life so far. She has a great sense of humor in such a weirdly nerdy way that makes the class weirdly fascinating, even through I have no interest in Roman mythology or history whatsoever. Exams are super fair as long as you go to the class regularly.
Kelly is the best classics teacher in the university (in my opinion). She's hilarious, and gives ample warning before tests. Participation is important, and fun in this class, she often makes jokes about the things we translate and when she makes mistakes she quickly rectifies them. 10/10 would take again.
Kelly is one of the best profs I've had. She really cares and is really passionate in what she teaches. I said that attendance was mandatory but she doesn't take attendance or anything but she tests whether or not you actually show up to class. However, her classes are amazing and I highly recommend.
Honesty the most amazing and wonderful professor I have ever had. She is truest exceptional in every aspect. She is one of the best people I have ever had he pleasure of meeting, and leagues beyond other professors in terms of quality. Build you schedule around taking her classes, she is worth it.
One of the best professors I've had. Latin is hard to pick up on at times, but the lectures were enjoyable and informative. We used a textbook that we received on e-class. Tests were fair and similar to the HW and the exercises we did in class, so nothing was a surprise. She's also hilarious, easy to talk to and genuinely cares about her students.
Dr. MacFarlane makes learning ancient literature a breeze. She is in her element at all times in the classroom, she (kindly) gives almost all reading material to her students online for free, and she is not a pushover! She makes you think about what you are learning, and makes you care about it. Bit of a fast talker, but she knows and compensates.
It's incredibly hard to follow what she says during lectures. The textbook was not helpful, so had to rely on her disjointed lectures. Grades came back very late, doesn't give feedback before the next assignment is due. Lengthy written assignments almost every week. Overall, very frustrated by this prof, didn't make accommodations for online term.
Interesting content and clearly cares about the subject matter. However, takes EXTREMELY LONG to get assignments back. TA marked over half of the assignments but at least got them back in a timely manner. Some lectures were hard to follow, puts too much emphasis on the textbook. Was disappointed based on all the good things I'd heard from people.
I heard so many good things about her that I was very disappointed. Maybe it was that she doesn't know how to teach online, but her lectures seemed disjointed. All of her marking had no rubrics, gave zero feedback, and was returned super late so that it was useless for us in preparing for the next assignment. And she almost always went late.
Really really nice prof. Lectures are really interesting and easy to follow if you're interested. Obviously knows a ton about like... everything to do with classics. Has an alarming number of cats. I'm taking two more of her classes this semester because she obviously knows how to teach. No idea what people are complaining about.
She's a great professor! I was hesitant in taking a language course, but needed one to graduate. I took her for LAT 101 first semester (online) and although Latin was confusing sometimes, it's quite easy to get a good mark in this class. We had homework assignments and quizzes, and midterm and final translation and then writing in Latin).
My favourite prof so far from my time at university. Lectures are laid back and are centered around more discussion than hurrying to take notes. Graded on weekly quizzes and short assignments, and exams are take-home essay responses. I felt like I got a really detailed and good understanding of the material from her lectures.
She is very knowledgeable and she gives amazing lectures. Always very entertaining and informative. This class was awesome and I recommend it to anyone. 9 short open-book quizzes, 5 hw assignments (the lowest mark is dropped), 1 midterm and the final. grading criteria is kind of unclear.
Professors literally make or break your class, Prof Macfarlane made me love a course that I hated. She's the best professor I've ever had, and she made class such a fun environment despite Covid term. She made you want to learn, she's so funny and super helpful in and out of class. It seems like she genuinely loves teaching and it shows. 11/10 prof
A must-have prof - grading criteria can be unclear but besides that she is awesome - lectures are a ton of fun, clearly extremely knowledgeable in her field. Super respectful to students and answers all questions. Best professor I've ever had! Has more cats than I've ever seen before, but they just added to the fun of the Zoom lectures.
Dr Macfarlane always makes learning the material fun! I learn so so much from her and I always feel like she genuinely cares about her students. Attendance isn't mandatory (she's very understanding!!!) but if you don't go you won't do well as her lectures aren't powerpoint based. Super available outside class hours. Especially by email.
One of the best courses I have taken! Dr. MacFarlane is an amazing, entertaining lecturer, and a great person. 294 is really interesting and intriguing, but has a slightly heavy load of content; so if you attend the lectures and write down notes, you will do well! Took this as Art Credit, and looking into taking another course with her.
She's super nice and understanding but talks really fast! (Textbook is provided for you)
Dr. MacFarlane is a decent prof, but seems so scattered a lot of the time. I felt like she explained obvious/irrelevant things way too in depth, and actual important details not enough. I didn't like that the TA graded most of our stuff- the marks were inconsistent. She talks really fast, but tries to answer questions. Weekly homework and quizzes.
Even though I can confidently say that I hate latin, I can still see she is a good prof. She is energetic in class and overall fairly engaging. There is usually two homework assignments a week but they are fairly easy.
Amazing prof, willing to answer any and all questions. Very helpful. Sometimes talks fast.
Professor MacFarlane is so passionate about latin and about her students and it really comes through in her teaching. She is so clear and efficient when teaching and I always looked forward to coming to her class. She sparked a love for latin I didn't know I had, take this class with her if you can!
Dr. MacFarlane is an amazing person, her lectures are hilarious and entertaining. However, her grading is not clear at all. Some peers receive feedback on their midterms and have a chance to argue for marks, and others receive no feedback. She also decided to lower our previously received grades after the USRI closed Lowering our letter grades
Dr. MacFarlane is a relatively good prof. The main issues I had were her lowering our homework grades after releasing them to us and not providing very much useful feedback throughout the course. Her lectures were fun to attend.
Dr. MacFarlane is a ton of fun, and very good at teaching the language. She grades languages well - you don't need to be able to provide a mechanical translation, you just need to understand what is being said. Very accessible outside of class to help.
It's Latin therefore it's not easy be prepared to do work outside of class and you will do just fine. Word of advice, do not put this class on the back burner. Kelly is one of the best profs I have had and I would recommend anyone to take her class if you can.
Magistra Macfarlane was an amazing prof, I want to take more classes with her. Latin grammar gets tricky but she knows how to teach a language. She was always engaging and gave lots of opportunity for review. She makes me want to be a classics major. Show up to class and take notes on the lectures. If you're having doubts, TAKE THE CLASS!
Overall, Professor MacFarlane is a solid teacher. She cares about her students and is extremely engaging. I will caution you, however, and tell you that her grading scheme is a lot tougher than most; a 75% is equivalent to a C+ or a 2.3 on the GPA scale. It's super hard to get a GPA of 3.7 considering that the range is between 90% and 92%.
Kelly is a very fun prof! Shes energetic, hilarious, and enthusiastic in her lectures. She usually has weekly quizzes and assignments that are easy and fair; it can sometimes feel like a bit much but it really helps you figure out what you know! I highly recommend Kelly to anyone interested in her classes (Or in hearing her hyping up Archimedes)!
Amazing amazing prof! The way Kelly taught was so helpful, every class I walked away feeling confident in what I learned. She was more than willing to help, and responds to emails within minutes. Each class started off with review from the previous day which made it easy to segue into the new topic. Would HIGHLY recommend!
She's hilarious, energetic, and super caring in and out of class. You can't go wrong with any of the beginner Latin instructors, but Kelly's class is a must-have experience. It's not a breeze, but you're encouraged to want to put the effort you can into learning Latin. She knows what she's talking about and applies her knowledge in engaging ways.
It's very much a high school English-style class with readings and papers and analyzing the works. There's tons of reading to do, but that's expected as it is a literature class. As long as you go to lectures you'll be fine. She does put the slides on eclass but during the lecture she gives way way more info than what's on the slides.
She's amazing. Her style of teaching makes her lectures enjoyable and everything incredibly easy to understand. She's passionate and fun through class. One of my fave profs!
Magistra Macfarlane is so enthusiastic about Latin that she makes it contagious. The class is hard, but learning languages is hard, and I think if you're gonna take Latin at UofA you should be doing it with her. She is funny and brisk and teaches in a way that makes things stick.
She honestly makes a boring and hard language fun to learn. She makes lots of jokes and explains things in various ways to make sure you understand. She has tons of simple and easy homework assignments for you to get feedback before any assignments for marks. She is also super willing to help you outside & inside of class by encouraging questions.
The lectures were awesome and were always a highlight of my day. Kelly is funny and witty during their lectures. Information was streamlined and easily accessible for lectures since slides were posted before class. There were a lot of books you had to buy for the class, but over all, it was so worth it to take this class.
Very understanding of students individual circumstances and accommodated as best she could. She genuinely cares that everyone do well and understand the content
Amazing as always. Very fun and engaging. Genuinely cares. Lots of little things to boost your grade.
top 10 rappers eminem is too afraid to diss but honestly an amazing professor, fun assignments, and enjoyable lectures. She keeps everything super entertaining and engaging. It feels less like lectures and more like story time, go to class when you can. Highly recommend!
All of her lectures were very straight forward, both the final and the test were straight forward. Lectures were always content filled yet insanely entertaining. I would highly recommend going into Professor MacFarlane's classes as they care about their students and their time!
Really funny and entertaining lectures, however the grading criteria very strict for a 100 level class. Only feedback I got on papers was from the TA and at times the expectations were unclear. If you love myth take this class but if you just want something fun that will boost your GPA, don't.
Class 102 with MacFarlane was a very interesting course, however, I found it difficult to keep up with the many readings for each lecture while in many other courses. There were 1-page opinion papers across the term. These I found time consuming and challenging as a decent writer. If you pay attention in lecture, you will be fine on the exams.
If you're a student declaring a pre-med, pre-dent, or completing a science degree, this course is a must-have. To fully understand the material you need to stay on-top of the flashcards and lectures, and take the time to truly understand the material. Dr. MacFarlane appreciates her students and is willing to offer aid outside of the lectures! 10/10
Dr. Macfarlane is a great professor and she's always passionate about the content she teaches. She's the most accessible professor I've ever met, she can reply to you instantly outside the class if you have any questions and she sometimes even gives you feedback at 10 or even 11 p.m. It's fortunate for me to choose her class.
This professor has no clear grading policies. She does not use a rubric to grade papers, and instead grades opinion papers off of how correct she thinks they are. Not to mention, the grading scale she has set up had 85% as a B. I suggest avoiding this professor and the course.
The grading system is inappropriate and there was no rubric. I couldnt get a clear answer to why I was loosing marks on the writing assignments. It also seemed as thought all of the science students did terribly and the classics majors did well. If you need to get a ceritan grade above a B, then dont take this class.
Great lectures. Fast talker. Rambles a bit but makes topics exciting and understandable. Many essays. Exams are all written response. Gives good feedback on each assignment.
The class was really interesting but the grading scale was insane, 80% was a B-. She is a good lecturer and you could see that she was very interested in what she was teaching but if I had to go back I would not take this class.
Kelly is fantastic. She is clearly passionate about Latin, which is felt in her lectures. The only thing she might care about more than Latin itself is her student's success. She is accessible for any extra help you might need (or if you just want to chat). Overall, she makes Latin fun and interesting. Take her classes!
Kelly is just a pure awesomeness. her lectures are really helpful and full of interesting points on Roman literature. She is caring person and it is delightful to learn from her, or just to talk to her. her assignments are very clear and fun to do, which is rare. I would highly recommend her if you want to have a fun class!
If you want to learn Latin and have some fun at the same time, I recommend Kelly. She makes the learning Latin so fun and easy. She is a very warm and kind person. If you need help, just talk to her and she is going to be there for you! Kelly is the best prof you'll have.
Amazing professor! Her lectures are fun and interesting, and the assignments were fun and relatively short. Lectures were recorded in case you missed them. Would easily take another class with her!
The lectures were engaging, but the grading system felt unreasonable. Tried unstuck AI and ChatGPT to prepare, but would not take this class again unless changes are made.
She's fantastic. So fun, so engaging, and her teaching style worked perfectly for my brain. I loved this class and found it so easy because of her! She really made me love Latin. She cares so much about her students and is super funny and clearly loves what she does, just a terrific prof. Shoutout Magistra!!!
Amazing professor. Dr. MacFarlane is constantly engaging and thoroughly entertaining, and is able to teach a lot of the tricky parts of Latin in an intuitive way. An absolute must if you're taking a Latin course. Optima magistra!
Dr. MacFarlane performs engaging lectures but, if you miss class you will fail. She does not have a clear grading criteria and does not provide feedback. She marks to maintain a class average of B and does not mark fairly because of that. Often you will write your final without receiving any grades back. Would not recommend.
I love love love her lectures they're super interesting and she's very knowledgeable! This was my favourite class this semester. The only downside is she mark very harshly, and if u are lucky enough to get feedback, it's usually illegible 😭😭.
Dr. MacFarlane is super funny and breaks down complicated texts so they're easy to understand. You can tell that she genuinely enjoys teaching! There is a decent amount of reading, luckily it is all available for free. Grading was a bit tough on the inksheds but it's very possible to get A's if you know your stuff! Go to class, and TAKE NOTES!!
