Use the TAs as a resourse for your papers. They will fix mistakes that cost one point each out of the 100 points for the essay. The tests are very focused on specific terms and not general ideas. You will have to study stuff like the difference between poltical socialization and political culture.

This class is hard no matter what professor you take. I like Brother Patterson because he used lots of interesting clips, you got participation points for showing up to class, and he usually explained things pretty well. You may have a bad experience if you have a bad TA. This class had more reading as well, but I thought it really helped me.

I really enjoyed Prof. Patterson's class. He didn't make you memorize facts but taught principles and ideas that were prominent in our history. The clips were a nice addition, and most of the reading added a lot, too. Tests were kind of hard, but as long as you actually read, went to lectures and TA labs, and studied, you're set.

This professor writes the worst tests I have ever taken. Vague, opinionated, and frequently fraught with grammatical errors, it's difficult to take him seriously as an academic. Amazing lectures. Necessary to do the readings each week to stay on top of it- take notes! Study groups are really helpful for this class. Tests are hard but you get used to the style and can replace the final with any lower midterm scores. Essays are also graded pretty tough, but if you take it into the TA lab their feedback is helpful.

Yes. American Heritage is a difficult class; however, there are so many resources to succeed. Do your readings. I know there is a lot, but that's just how it is. Professor Patterson's lectures are entertaining and informative. If you try your best, you won't fail.

My lab section consisted of 21 people. 9 people in my class got an E in the class. This class is incredibly hard, and the questions are ridiculous. The tests ask for INSANE precision for things in nuances that are crazy. Half the questions compare two co-authors and ask who meant what MORE than the other, even when they co-wrote what we read. 2/10

This was class insanely difficult for no reason. The exams were so challenging, and there is NO study guide. I flunked all of them. I wish they restructured the class so that there was less readings and a study guide for each exam. For goodness sakes, this is a GE class! Good luck.

I loved Professor Patterson. While many say his classes (especially American Heritage) are overly difficult and hard, I disagree. I spent give or take an hour each day Monday through Friday on this class excluding in class time and did fine. As long as you are present in the class, do the readings and want to learn you will be just fine.
