Kelly Pernel has a very progressive view on homework and tests. She gives the answers at the back of every HW assignment which to me proves she actually want us to learn, not simply jump through hoops. Good teaching style.
She's the best Math teacher I've ever had, hands down. She really wants every student to do well, and gives lots of opportunities to do so(lets you hand back in homework if you lost points after handing it in the first time) Her lectures are SUPER clear, she's helpful, super intelligent, funny, and LOVES the subject she teacher. Sweet lady :)
She was definitely the best teacher I had this year. I had pretty good knowledge of Algebra but she really helped me understand whatever confused me. Long but easy homework and easy tests. She drops one test grade including the final. If you need any help, she will always stay after to answer any questions. Just an amazing professor overall.
great teacher, really cares about her students, you will pass the class she gives you many chances
She is such nice and helpful instructor. during the semester, she gives 5 exams and final, and she drop one exam that scored at lowest(in my case). In the exam, she allows one note that you need. I believe she is the best math instructor.
She's great. She's funny and tries to make the class less dull. Grading is very fair. Homework was a little harder than the tests. Homework is required, attendance is not. Drops lowest test score including final. Allows notes for tests. Textbook is bad but that's not her fault.
She is so great, best math teacher ever ! Always trying to help students.
Knowledgeable as someone with a Master's in Math. Very helpful and with an efficient teaching method. I actually came to like my math class. Turning in the homework is part of the grade but she does not have a deadline for it as long as it is all completed by the end of the course. She will also drop the lowest score out of 5 tests.
It was useless class . The teacher was hard to understand. I didn't really learned a lot in that class
THIS TEACHER WAS HARD TO UNDERSTAND. SHE WAS RUDE SOMETIMES. ACTUALLY, SHE WASN'T VERY HELPFULL TO ME. I DONT RECOMEND HER.
Her class always full. school better offers bigger room. As i compare with my friends took Cal1 class, i can't say whos better or not. Cause all prof has their own teaching style. but i believe her teaching style is approachable for everybody. For me, she is the #1 professor, It's not only easy to get an A but learn everything from soup to nuts.
Great Mathematics teacher! She really helps her students out and makes sure they understand everything. I definitely recommend her to others. I wish she taught the next class I have to take.
needless to say
Hands dows....BEST TEACHER EVER. She is extremely helpful, funny, and nice! It is hard NOT to get an A in the class. Just get an average of a B on tests and A on homeworks and you're good to go.
Great Teacher!
She is a great math teacher! She is very kind to all students and very helpful !
Lecture are clear and animated. She is the best calculus professor in the district. Prepared me well for 3B even though the professor is not as good.
Kelly Pernell is an angel sent from heaven, she not only is very clear in her lectures and in what she expects from you but also in what is going to be on tests and how to study for them. She goes above and beyond the call of duty by making herself available to students and by giving extra help and encouragement. We need more teachers like her.
She is an amazing teacher! She allows one page of notes, and also drops the lowest test score. Kelly also answers the many questions students may have and if she cannot answer them, she helps provide the resources. I recommend her to anyone who wants to learn and get an A in her class.
Kelly is awesome! She's easily the best math teacher I've ever had. Her instruction is very clear and she never makes you feel like it's not ok to ask questions. She shows multiple examples for all concepts and teaches in a way that really just makes sense. I'm going to make sure that she is my teacher for all my remaining math classes!
I like her as a teacher. You can always talk to her and she will always talk to you. She allows a page of notes on tests but really wants you to do well.
Great professor, very clear explanations, totally willing to help out with any issues, highly recommend her.
She is a great professor! Clear explanations. And let you use one page of note for every test.
The best teacher I have ever had in my entire school career. Extremely helpful, nice, accommodating, and a great teacher. Went through all my math courses with her. Wish she taught Math 3C!
I took this class Fall 2013. Kelly is the needle in the haystack, the professor that you want to have prior to leaving BCC. She understands what it's like being a community college student and she understands what is necessary to know for further success in the STEM fields. She is really kind and works hard for her students. Take her class.
Awesome professor! Extremely knowledgeable and super clear lectures. One of the best for sure...
I loved Kelly! Took her one time for Math 3A and just had to take her again for Math 3B. She's very clear and very helpful. Her grading policy is also very fair! Definitely Recommend!
Professor Pernell is a wonderful professor: Detailed and complete lectures, Clear requirements, Fair grader, Good explanations, Doesn't give too much homework, Friendly, and has a good sense of humor. I found the class easy (math comes easily to me) and extremely reasonable. I'm definitely taking her in the future, would recommend 100%.
I took 3 classes form Prof Pernell (Math 2A, 3A, and 3B), I did pretty well in all of the classes. She is very clear, and is willing to help. If you want a good grade, do all the homework, come to class, and be up to date with the course materials. She also allows a page of notes during exam. She is the best, I highly recommend her!!
She drops the lowest test score, homework can bump you an entire letter grade if you do it all (you can resubmit if you didnt receive full credit). She is unfocused lately, makes losts of mistakes and this can confuse students who are not math nerds so be careful, make sure to come to class, pay attention and possibly get outside help.
She doesn't have practice tests but she has practice problems that somewhat model the tests. I recommend doing those bc a lot of times the problem from the practice test is the exact one on the actual test. For the final make sure you do all types of problems and not just the ones you've seen on hwtest. I found that the final was a lot different.
Kelly is a really good teacher. I took her Math 3A class in spring semester. Four exam total. 3 midterm and 1 final. She will drop your lowest midterm. She is a detail-oriented teacher, willing to break down the questions and answer every class questions.
Pernell makes you work for it. But before this class my math was shakey. She definitely increased my confidence in math. She works with her students in office hours, has a semi-forgiving grading policy, and genuinely cares about preparing her students for future science related courses. She is also one of the most intelligent people I ever met.
I can ask her any question and she will answer it. She explains things really well. Fun class to attend.
Easily one of the best professors I've ever had. I never felt like I was naturally good at math, but after this class I definitely feel like I have a better foundation. She has a relatively forgiving grading policy and is one of the most intelligent people I've ever met. If you have a question she can answer it, guaranteed.
Definitely one of the best if not the best Calc teacher in Peralta. Lectures just seem to fly by in this class and overall, being in the class is a great experience. Tests are 8 questions each grading only the top 7. One of the biggest upsides is that she said an 86% is an A if you do everything on time, in other words be a good student.
Very fast paced, you will learn a lot. She is an exceptional instructor and definitely knows her numbers. Exams are somewhat difficult, but she knocks your lowest exam, excluding the final (see previous rating for more info). She holds review sessions in the LRC before every exam. There is homework, start early.
Best calculus teacher in Peralta.
I took her for calc I & II. She is lowkey monotone but she is an excellent lecturer who makes tough concepts simple. DO THE HOMEWORK, it really helps. If you can do the homework you can definitely take the test (usually the homework is harder).
Best math teacher had her for 3A and 3B. Her lectures are fast-paced but thorough and she explains everything step-by-step. Go to her office hours! Made a huge difference in terms of understanding all the material. She's an extremely fair grader and accepts partial credit, do your homework and you'll be fine.
Absolutely hate her teaching style. Her tone of voice is condescending, she responds to questions as tho you're stupid, the problems on HW & tests are full of extra twists that make them extremely discouraging and worse, the tricky parts aren't based on the material you're actually trying to learn, making it harder to focus on & learn the material
Here's the thing... Her criteria is clear from the beginning. Go to class, pay attention to the lectures, do the hw and you will be prepared for the exams. Her lectures are fast paced and can seem confusing, but all it takes is a hand raise and she is willing to explain anything. Her tone may seem harsh but I think its just her voice to be honest.
By far the greatest math teacher I have ever had! She provides the perfect mix of reviewing and teaching. She will explain even the simplest problems if you ask her and is willing to go over something as many times as it takes to understand. She gives homework that is very similar to the tests and drops your lowest test score (excluding the final).
She's extremely intelligent and has answers to anything you ask. The best thing about her is that she actually uses the board to write and make her students understand. HW is heavy but if you do all of it, it's easy to pass her exam and get an A. One tip for you, make sure to ask her any questions during her office hours, not after the class.
One of the best math professors I've ever had. She is clear in what she expects. Her class setup is amazing and designed to help students succeed. She gives really informative and helpful lectures. She's also a very nice person and you can tell that she really wants all of her students to succeed. My only complaint is that she doesn't teach Calc 3.
I took Prof. Kelly for both Math 3A and 3B. I absolutely enjoyed her style of teaching because she provided the class with step-by-step methods for solving problems. By doing the practice sets, you will prepare yourself for the midterms and the final.
The professor is very kind and lenient in her grading. She posted class notes and practice test problems online which was convenient. There is homework near final exam so make sure to do it when assigned since there is not a lot of time to completed. I suggest watch professor Leonard on YouTube before the lecture as it help bridge the concepts.
One of the best math teachers at BCC. She helped me love math again. She is very understanding and wants her students to succeed.
I think she expects us to be very knowledgeable, great in math and thinks that math 3B should perform better. The exams only had around 5 questions. If you cannot do one or two problems then it can affect your grade dramatically. There are better math professors at other Peralta colleges than her.
Pernell's teaching style during her lectures is very dry. But, she is willing to help you. Pernell's tests are fairly simple and easy. She does not try to trick you. She does assign a lot of coursework eg. tons of homework, but the way you earn a passing grade in her course is fairly straightforward and not difficult to obtain.
Kelly isn't a bad teacher by any means but isn't the greatest either. I liked the fact that she used the tablet to project the problems on the board and her overall helpfulness. Unfortunately, her class is very dry and boring. Further, her tests are mostly fair and require quite a bit of studying (as with other courses). I'd give her a 6.5/10
If you want a great calc 2 teacher, I'd recommend her. She'll make sure in every way that you understand the material rather than worry about the grade which is why her grading system is flexible. As long as you do the homework and attend lectures, you'll be guaranteed a passing grade. Her quizzes are fair in which she gives q's similar to the hw
Calc 2 is an extremely hard class, but Pernell makes it a lot more bearable. Although I learned virtually nothing from her lectures, the way her class is set up is great. If you truly put in the effort, you will be pass.
I had ms pernell for spring 2020 during COVID shut down. She was very rude and was not understanding of student circumstances. I do not recommend this teacher because i believe she needs sympathy training. I had other teachers who were more humanistic. It is distracting as a student when professors are unaproachable. especially during a pandemic
She was definitely one of the best professors I've had. She lectures and takes notes pretty fast, but she has a YouTube channel and lecture notes posted so they're just as helpful. There's no tests but you're graded on your work from hw problems at the end of every chapter so it's best to always do it. Must attend office hours at one point (2xA)
Kelly is awesome. No tests, just homework and you can do it whenever you have time, no late penalty. I would go to tutoring 2 hours a week and do all my homework with a tutor and they would check my work and I would turn it in. Great teacher, although lecture heavy and talks very fast, take this class and you won' be upset!
She designs her courses really well in a way that prioritizes learning rather than just making it hard to be hard. She's a great teacher and very approachable, also has multiple office hour times a week! Also posts a lot of resources on canvas. I took both her Calc and I thoroughly enjoyed both.
She is amazing.
I would highly recommend Pernell. She is clearly very knowledgeable and always willing to walk through any problems. What I like most is how the work is set up. Weekly homework and no tests besides the final, making it very low stress. It's tough material, but if you just stay on top of the assignments you will get an A.
Test heavy, very independent work focused didn't work for my personal learning style.
I have taken both calc 1 and 2 with her and this is very straight forward. This was a very well-designed course. She is always available to discuss with how to get through your particular math problem. Doing all weekly and putting in the work will guarantee an A in this course. Only 1 final. Wish I could take calc 3 with her.
I loved Prof. Pernell's class! I was very scared going into Calculus but she explains things so well. Her online recorded videos are an amazing resource. She prioritizes students learning & most of the grade is based on completing homework, which you have multiple attempts on! She's super understanding, and I'm excited to take Calc 3B with her :)
There was like 36 weekly questions and I was not understanding the material from the notes and modules. This is a 2nd level calculus course but it seemed fast pace and you are expected to memorize a table of integrals from around the beginning. She does have a great system with no tests in place. I switched to Merritt and am happy with that choice.
Professor Pernell has a very straight forward teaching style. If you were an AP student in high school, her coursework feels similar to that caliber. Calc 2 really does depend on prior foundations in Calc 1, Algebra, & Pre-calc. I'd say if you lack them this class will harder. However, much of the homework does appear on the test and final.
best math prof in BCC. Do your work, and you will get an A
Loved having Professor Pernell for Calculus I. Was definitely a course I was scared to take, but she made everything so straight forward and understandable. Calculus is not easy and takes time to learn, but attend Office Hours frequently, stay after class to do work, and dont fall behind in HWs to receive an A. I cant wait to have her for Calc 2!
I had her asynchronous course, which had online lectures which conflicted with my physics class. Luckily though she doesn't require meeting attendance. Her homework and exams are very fair and posted ahead of time, and if you catch her at in person office hours she is very nice, knowledgeable on techniques, and dedicated to your learning ofmaterial
It's easy to fall behind but the class is not difficult if you have good work ethic. The textbook is free and available online + Ms. Pernell has a youtube channel. Homework is most of your grade with one assignment every week or two. There are four exams total that are all in the same format as the homework. Great for independent workers.
Professor Kelly Pernell has been one of the best professors I've learned from. Her attention to detail while explaining concepts helped me master the Calculus 2 course. I would 100% recommend. Make sure to attend office hours if you are taking her online course to make sure you are not falling behind.
As an engineering major, best for ACTUALLY learning calc w/out stress of failing. Always here for office hours/helps you with HW, shows you step by step how to solve. Very intelligent/experienced in mathematics. She has awesome techniques for evaluation. Taking her again for math 3B/ I pray for students who didn't register for her class in time!
Took Professor Pernell for Calc 3A and 3B. 3B is a very tough class, plus this semester was difficult for me as I had injuries. Nevertheless, her online lectures enabled me to catch up on the material and pass. Her lectures are clear and concise. As a result, the homework reflects what she taught! She's extremely reachable during OH and awesome!
Clearly the GOAT of math. By far the best teacher I have ever had in my life. She tells you everything you need to do to meet your goals and the entire course is prepped out for your success. The only way you can do badly in this class is by not putting in effort and not showing up to class. No downsides to her teaching. Simply phenomenal.
I love Kelly Pernell. She is really fast though. I'm not exactly a slow learner but my golly did I have to actually focus in class. But she helps you after her lectures and she provides you with so much support. I really did learn in her class and even though she gives you in class tests they're super straight forward and I honestly enjoyed them.
I took 3b asynchronously and the organization of this class was amazing. Lectures, lecture notes, and help during office hours were super accessible making a difficult class feel much more manageable. She also answers emails quickly. The work is hard, and you will have to spend a lot of time studying. Gold standard for asynchronous calculus class.
I took MATH3B asynchronously. One of the most organized professors I have had. Her expectations are clear, has lots of practice problems, exams are fair, and has a lot of resources such as lecture notes and videos that are concise and easy to understand. It's a lot of work, but really helps you understand the material.
Great teacher and she explains the concepts in a simple way to understand. Do not skip class, attendance is taken and recorded. She doesn't give extra credit so make sure to do all the homework before deadlines and study for the exams
I have to say, Kelly is one of the best professors I've had at BCC. Her lectures are well organized and usually include helpful examples. She has office hours after each lecture if you ever need help. The exams are very similar to the homework assignments. As long as you attend every class, the work shouldn't be too difficult.
Very thorough and organized. The course is dense, but helped me feel confident in the material due to the amount of practice. Lecture videos with concise examples. The homework, exams, and policies are fair. It's unclear how she grades your exam work as she does not leave feedback, but I'm sure if you reached out she would respond.
Lacks clear instructions on the homework, is somewhat harsh in grading, and can come across as condescending when communicating about assignment clarification. I would only recommend this class if you are an independent learner who does not expect much communication with the professor. Do not rely on her for support.
professor pernell is an incredibly tough grader on written assignments and would refuse to give feedback. don't expect any help from this professor in this class. it'd probably be much better in person as most of her good feedback are from her in person classes. horrible semester and a very hostile communicator.
Each homework set takes at least 2-3 hours of your day, and some chapters won't even have lecture videos to help you understand the HW, so you would have to do your own research or make time for office hours. The "hostile communicator" statement from other posts are true, she will be very defensive of her work when you ask for help.
Lots of homework, but I understand since it was most of the grade. Glad we didn't have exams for this class. It made the class a lot less stressful for me. She was also really nice in office hours. She helped me a lot.
Got through. Appreciated the help I got.
Every time I met with her she helped me with anything I asked about. It made the online class so much better. I wish she had zoom or other live sessions in the class.
I liked that we could use notes for the tests and that homework was worth the most. I'm not good at math, but I could get through.
Great professor! Her grading criteria are clear, and thankfully there are no exams. However, there's a lot of homework to do. She is also strict about written assignments, just as a heads-up. Her recorded lectures are easy to follow and super helpful. If you put in a lot of effort, the assignments won't be too difficult.
