She is a realy good math teacher. She explains math principles very well. I was able to understand her better than any other math teacher I have ever had at LCC. She make excellent sugar cookies!! If you take her class, ask her to make some, you won't regret it!!
If you have a choice, choose Sakkinen above any other professor. You will learn the material, and if you are struggling talk to her. She will work with you until you understand. She is amazing, you will be glad you took her class.
Kelly's a nice lady.Has an effective way of teaching. However if you are confused & ask her a question, she'll intimidate the hell out of you. She'll make you feel stupid as if you're supposed to know everything. If yu show up to class, do your homework & portfolio, and do well on your tests then u should get a good grade.Take Shauna Hoffman instead!
Completed the online course. Sends weekly email to help students keep pace with course material. Encourages & requires homework questions. Not many chances for extra credit. Provides online copies of face-to-face notes from her on-campus class which is really helpful. Exams cover alot and usually took 2 to 2.5 hours, not timed for online sect.
Kellys a nice lady, but she's a HORRIBLE instructor! You can tell right from the beg she only favors the high-achievers.If you have a question she often ignores you and moves on to the next subject (unless ur her fav).Tests r hard, dont really follow the homw assignments/in-class activities.Portfolio,tests,projects=90% grade. I Dont recommend her!
She went over all of the material step by step so it was easy to follow its progression. She will answer any questions you have in order to be sure you understand.
Took her online section in Fall 2009. Sent out weekly emails for what was due that week and upcoming due dates. Only had to come into Main Campus for the tests. The class definitely took up a lot of time with the weekly homework problems, quizzes, and ANGEL posts, along with Excel projects and tests. Overall wasn't too bad.
I struggle at math and I aced college algebra. As long as you do the work, she will help you with anything. She doesn't humor "obviously I didn't do my homework" questions. She is thorough and well-paced. She has an open-note quiz at the beginning of every class which keeps your mind refreshed. You can also gain back up to 10 points on every test.
TAKE HER!!!!!She was awesome. im not a huge fan of math classes but she made it easy to understand, and if you go to every class you should do good on tests, and she gives extra credit for not missing any days. I would recommend her to anyone taking the stat class
Kelly is a great professor! You have to understand that you are signing up for a stats class NOT a math class. I didn't know the difference and I'm not a math person but I actually really enjoyed stats. She does online video lectures and makes the material very easy to understand and she's extremely helpful if you don't. I highly recommend her.
If you take this class online DO NOT BUY THE BOOK. It is on the statsportal website you are required to buy. Kelly made stats very understandable when I was dreading the class. Not an easy class, must put in effort but she is a great teacher and cares about her students.
Has no compassion for family emergencies and not willing to work with students facing the death of an immediate family member.
Very good teacher, explains lessons well!
She is very helpful in the sense of outlining the lecture for you and explaining things clearly. Doesn't offer a ton of help on hw however, but understandable based on how much effort she expects you to put into it. She made stats interesting and easy. She is a great teacher! If you take this class in lecture, you don't have to buy the Statsportal.
Online classes are the worst, but Kelly made this class easier than any math class I've had. Her videos were precise and clear and she was more than willing to help with any little question you had. I wish I'd taken her lecture, she was probably better 'live'. I definitely definitely recommend her.
She knows her stuff, very knowledgeable, but she gives way to much work! The class is not too difficult, but the homework is a lot, so if you have other classes with a ton of work you would probably become behind! Nice lady, but not room for leniency!
STAT 215 was the most organized, well run online course I've ever taken. Kelly's recorded lectures, calculator demos and Excel examples provided all the info you needed for your assignments. She encouraged participation online and e-mailed timely reminders weekly. Stats is not an easy course, but Kelly made it enjoyable. Only take Stats from her!
She is very organized person with having her grade book set and you can find everything content page. Kelly uploads lectures' notes after each class period. She wants people to participate during class. She will answer all your question and get back to your email in timely fashion. Kelly is amazing teaching.
Kelly kept her online page very organized and she was very good at updating grades at a reasonable time. All of her teaching material was available online. The homework had very little to do with the chapter exam material (this is stated in the syllabus) so I found it very hard to study for the chapter exams!
I am currently taking her online math course which is tough but not because of her. It requires a lot of time and work. Kelly is very organized, clear and precise. Grades are always posted in a timely manner, she responds quickly to emails and always comments on your homework posts. I would definitely recommend her.
Prof. Sakkinen is the best teacher I have ever had at LCC. She makes the material so easy to grasp and has thorough lecture notes. She offers a template to fill out during class and makes all the material available after online, even lecture videos. She makes sure to go over all the material and has a review day before each test. She's great!
Kelly was an awesome math prof! She is so clear and concise. Before taking stats, I thought I would have to get a tutor but I was wrong. She explains everything clearly and has organized notes. Homework goes fast and easy. Don't get the textbook, we never used it. If you have to take statistics, take her!!
I love Kelly! She is one of the sweetest professors I have ever had. There's a lot of information to memorize, so she lets you use a formula sheet on exams. There's quite a bit of homework too. She has a really high voice though, if that bothers anyone. Other than that, it's a great class.
Prof Sakkinen is an overall good professor. She seems to be genuinely kind and is willing to help if you have questions. She is, however, extremely strictpicky when it comes to grading, especially on exams. She also seems to be one of those teachers who asks a question and then calls on the people who DON'T have their hand up. Not cool.
Very very clear when lecturing, all lectures posted online later. Lots of homework, but not much time per week. Attendance isn't mandatory, but there are graded in-class assignments every class period, so you want to show up anyway. There's lots of optional non-graded homework, I didn't touch it and still got a 4.0.
Kelly was very helpful and willing to put in extra time with anyone who needed it. She gave opportunities to make up points often.
What a great professor she makes stats fun and is great to listen to. Tough subject matter but she is more than willing to help you understand it you just have to apply yourself.
I took this class online with her and she was a terrible teacher. Never answered my questions. Consistently was making mistakes in the online homework with the answers she was putting in. The class was very poor instructed. Be prepared to have to teach yourself and be annoyed with her homework. I would never take her again. EVER.
Worst class I've ever taken. Kelly was not helpful and didn't encourage us to succeed in our work. In fact, if we didn't do well in an exam, she suggested we withdraw. Tests were difficult, and she made a TON of mistakes in the online homework quizzes. The book is definitely necessary, and sometimes it helps more than she does.
Professor Kelly Sakkinen is an amazing teacher, she really cares about her students and wants every student to pass; however, the reason why I gave her high evaluation is because she asks us to do a lots paper works (which is definitely great help to understand those complicated STAT concept) and also gives us great feedback. In short.....
Kelly is a fantastic teacher. Her lectures can feel long, but she is clear, concise, and easy to understand. On Desire2Learn she posts notes from class, videos of her explaining concepts, and tests from previous years. If you still didn't understand something, she was clear and quick to respond to questions. Overall, I learned a lot in little time.
I usually don't bother rating my professors, but Kelly was great. Normally I hate math classes because it doesn't come easy to me, but she was clear and helpful and made the class easy. At first I thought she was overly repetitive, but it actually really helped me get the concepts down. Try not to miss class, the lectures are key to understanding.
This is how online courses should work. Very clear, detailed lectures with lots of examples. If you don't pass the tests, you clearly didn't do the assigned work. Not too much work either. Some math prof's kill you with tons of redundant problems, not her. No pointless mandatory thread posting either. Highly recommended.
I took this online math 119. This teacher doesn't actually teach you anything. Everything is done on my math lab. Don't buy the text book because if you use the access code. you can gain the text book online, She responds to email very fast and helps you if you need it. Although be ready to spend a lot of time on this 17+ a week, do hwA
Very rude, only stayed in the class because it was easy
I took this class over the summer and it was very difficult. I put in a lot of time and effort to 4.0 this class. She says at the beginning to spend 24-32 hours a week on her class and I definitely did not spend that much time on it! Closer to 15-20! It's a lot of work but she's clear about what she expects from you. Would take it with her again!
Great professor! Explains things clearly. Available on email and on discussion boards. Buy the textbook, unless you are confident in your internet access and operating system. Many times I could not access the online content or see the information or graphics load for the online tests. Tech doesn't always work.
The amount of homework I got in this class was shocking. I was always doing math homework. It was a pretty easy 4.0. She's really nice and answers questions thoroughly. It just got extremely discouraging with how much homework I got. She's an amazing teacher though. Just get ready to work.
Took Kelly because she had good reviews, class was a breeze. Do the homework, MML, easy A. If you struggle with math concepts she's one of the best teachers because she walks through notes as her lecture and is happy to reexplain material. Quizzes were all take home for this semester and you could use notes. Several tests and projects.
Lectures were heavy, but gave a lot of detailed information. Lots of homework, but it was good because, you could learn from her and teach yourself. Overall would take this teacher again.
Kelly does a great job explaining difficult concepts to difficult students. I watched her patience be tested, but she continued to explain over and over again in about 14 different ways until a student got the concept. I recommend her if you are good at math or if you are awful at math.
Be prepared to teach yourself this material. Her lecture videos are better than most online classes I took. Just don't depend on those alone to pass. You will need to read through the chapters to understand what she's discussing. Overall a great online professor just don't do it in the summer because she doesn't condense the material or homework.
I was nervous about taking Stats, but Kelly really clearly laid it out. Lots of practice (do not skimp on this, it takes time but will be beneficial to your learning/exams). Also do the exam reviews and understand them (pay attention), lots of questions on exams are similar. Allowed a note card too for every exam. Recommend Kelly.
The worst the class I've ever taken. The prep quizzes and HW are ridiculous. way too much work without any proper instruction. When I or anyone else asks a question she never answers it, she just scolds you for not knowing or points you to the textbook. Responsive but it's not helpful if u get no solution. wanted to like her, but forced not to
Kelly is a great professor but sometimes it feels like she teaches her classes like a high school class. Gives you fill in the blank note packets. Lots of online and forms for homework, lots of quizzes as well. Overall, it's an easy class and she makes learning it very simple.
Kelly is genuinely interested in helping every student find a way to succeed, but only if you put in the work. Very clear on what to expect each week and how it would tie into the rest of the semester. Homework can be overwhelming but many opportunities to redo assignments or earn extra credit. I spent about 4-5 hours total per week on coursework.
Kelly is great! She gives you a 100% on the homework if you attempt it. The weekly assignments are very reasonable. She does make you come in for four proctored tests which kinda sucks. She sends out weekly emails so you know exactly what to expect. I give her a 10/10 every time! I would recommend her to anyone!
Kelly is the best Math professor I've ever had! She is very organized and teaches very well. I absolutely hate math, and Kelly made it bearable! She's very sweet and comes around to ask individually how you are doing in class. More than willing to answer questions, and you know exactly what to expect in class. Love it!
Kelly was the perfect online teacher! Everything was well organized, chapter by chapter, unit by unit, with many different resources at your disposal to help you succeed. You could retake the homework quizzes infinitely, and if you scored 80% or above on them for an entire unit, you'd earn five extra credit points towards the test. Truly awesome!
This professor is really great at Math subject. She explains the things in a very easy and nice way. we have to use My math lab. and get 80 percent to get full criteria. Her tests are from MML and are usually hard. Quizzes are from chapters some are in class some are take home. But you have to work hard for this calss in order to succeed.
Kelly is very rude and comes off as standoffish. The whole semester I felt that she thought every single one of her students was an imbecile. She is not very welcome with questions you have. (Ex: She would ask us if we had any questions on final exam review & then proceeded to say okay lets do my picks first) didnt do any questions for us.
She was a good professor. If you went to class you can handle the material well. It was a lot of work but it wasn't hard to do. Shes approachable and will work with you if emergencies were to happen. Would recommend if you struggle with Math.
Very detailed in lectures and takes time to teach the material. If you come to class, do homework, team discussions, and projects you will understand the material and do well on the tests. Practice is important in succeeding. Great instructor would take her again!
Right off the bat, she never tells you how to access any of the lectures online. Not even in her course outline/syllabus, so after 3 weeks of reading chapters in the book that didnt make much sense, I scavenged around and found them. The online lectures should be the first thing you mention to your online class.
Kelly doesn't explain material well. She often encourages students to attend her office hours, though she seems reluctant to help during these office hours. The professor isn't very understanding though she is knowledgeable.
Despite glowing reviews, her class is very hard. Way too much homework and she doesn't even try to be of any assistance to students. Ask her a question and she'll shrug you off. I spent all my time with a tutor trying to pass this class BTW I have never had to do this before. I almost failed her class and died. Do not take her for STATS. I
I do understand the negative reviews she has because she is a tough grader. However, here is my stance, No matter how opposite you are from a professor, they need to be treated with respect, from Odyssey Online criticizing how some students roast professors.
nice lady. I do apologize for attacking another commentor, and why my post got removed. However, the point I want to make is to acknowledge life experience professors have.
Wonderful.
Way too much hw. quizzes every week. the pdf is usually about 40-80 pages. There are some comments that she is not a people person, I do agree. I don't mean to scare anyone but through my experience, I went to tutor every day for 2 weeks and I still failed my test. My tutor even points out her mistakes on quizzes(#) so it takes a while to do at tim
I don't understand any of the bad reviews. She does an amazing job teaching in the lectures and makes it easy to understand. Every time I reached out to her she helped me. This was such an easy class to pass as long as you listen to lectures( she allows notecards for the exam) I can't say enough good things about her and this class. TAKE HER!
OMG. Worst class ever. Yeah she'll give you full credit if you attempt the HW but you have to UNDERSTAND WTH it is to even attempt it. She doesnt explain anything and her recorded lectures are too long and irrelevant. Just a waste of time. I would never take her again, especially not during COVID. I worked with a tutor the whole semester!!
makes absolutely no sense, when you reach out for zoom help, she has the worst attitude and it beyond mean. The comments she will leave on your work are beyond rude. Do not take her, take anyone besides her. For an online math class you would think she'd be caring and helpful but any questions you ask she will make you feel stupid and be little you
I really enjoyed taking Math119 with Professor Sakkinen. She was a really helpful Professor. You will not regret taking her class. The material is really good, and she always is there to help you if you have questions. I would recommend her to any classmates!
DO NOT take this class. I wish I listened to the bad reviews before I got myself into this mess. I am passing organic chemistry with a 4.0 but somehow I am failing her class. Lecture videos are so long and irrelevant and her handwriting is a mess. She only makes you ELIGIBLE for extra credit when you get 80% or above in her quizzes. Just terrible.
She is ok. To be honest, her lectures are long and hard to understand. I had no idea what she was talking about when she used all the terminologies. Try to watch the lectures multiple times (use video speed controller to reduce the time), do the quizzes. For her course, you definitely have to work your ass for that A.
Hard to work hard to understand and keep up in this class but Kelly was very supportive and always offered lots of help outside of class times. She responds to emails and questions very quickly. Also gets grades in the gradebook very quickly. Gives unlimited chances on homework quizzes. Overall had a great experience with her.
Kelly was one of the best math teachers Ive had! She gives so many extra credit opportunities that there is no reason you should get anything less than a B in my opinion. Although I did ask one question to better understand a problem and she was very vague with her answer there are ample tutors available. You dont have to buy the book!
This is easily the worst class I have ever taken at LCC. Kelly Sakkinen is horribly unhelpful, and rude while she does it. Her videos don't make any sense, and when you ask for help, she'll tell you that "other kids have done it fine before you". Doesn't respond fast to emails, and she will not help you regardless of what the circumstances are.
I believe that statistics is a challenging class to take online (especially over the summer). Professor Sakkinen provided many tools to help learn the information and was helpful while answering questions. Even though there were many assignments if you manage your time wisely and make a list of all the tasks then you'll do great
Math 119 was mostly just high school math so the content was easy but there was way too much homework. I would say it was fine if you just need to get the credit to get through it, but don't expect anything more than the bare minimum as far as enjoying the class.
This class involves a lot of homework and reading. You are able to retake the homework quizzes as many times as you want which is great. Sakinnen also provides up to 30 points of extra credit, definitely take advantage of that! The exam and quiz formats are honestly confusing. Make sure you do a lot of practice problems before the unit exams.
This professor was the best I've had for a math course. she clearly explained how to understand the problems. She answered any questions we had. She was very generous with extra credit ability. Very straight forward about what she expected for homework.
She is so kind and caring about her students. She explaining everything very clearly and if you have a questions she will answer and will help you with everything. I would recommend to take her class for everyone.
She is not a helpful teacher, despite what you may see on here. If you are someone who struggles with math, her teaching style is not for you. Really not helpful in my opinion, when expressing confusion and verbalizing that something does not make sense, she completely avoids question asked. Her voice is also extremely annoying, lots of material.
Straight forward online class with a online chapter quiz each week and 3 proctored 25 question exams plus the final. You can take the quizzes as many times as you want to achieve the highest grade. You can use a note card on all exams with plenty of extra credit opportunities. Clear note outlines/videos you can follow along with for each chapter.
Seems to be checked out and doesn't care. Didn't get clear responses when I asked any questions. When I got a response they were short, vague, and not helpful. There are much better teachers to take for this course.
Prof. Sakkinen is a very good math teacher. Math is not my best subject, but she made it seem easy and was helpful. I got the best grade I have ever gotten in a math class. If you do all your work and go to class, you will get along with her just fine. I recommend taking her class!
Kelly was the best choice I could have gone with for math! I'm absolutely horrible at math. But I managed to drag myself to the finish line with a 4.0! There's 4 main tests that weigh really heavy and then the final weighs less. Quite a bit of homework but if you plan time out you'll be fine. You get a formula sheet for tests too which is fantastic
Prof Sakkinen is one of the most organized, straightforward, and kind professors I've had. The class was quite a bit of work, but she was very helpful and provided lots of ways for us to ask questions. She was clear with tests and assignments and didn't spring any surprises on us. I would highly recommend her if you're willing to put in the work.
Tough course and doesn't make much sense. Homework doesn't really help you for the tests but she is nice.
I am halfway through STAT215 as a summer course and Professor Sakkinen is one of the best professors I have had yet in college! She leaves feedback for almost every single assignment and puts In effort to make sure you are learning. Her practice tests are extremely helpful for the exams and she gives A LOT of extra credit. Make sure to do the notes
she is nice but her entire course is online and when me and others struggled to get started she provided no help whatsoever. however she does provide a lot of extra credit. if homework is done on time and at least 80% she makes it 100%
Professor Sakkinen was a fair, straight forward, and thorough professor. I appreciate this type of professor because you truly earn what you deserve. If I ever get the chance to take her again, I definitely will. Her feedback was helpful throughout the class, and her videos were great, even though 1 or 2 of them came out as a little distorted.
