Great class
Class will turn your world upside down, great though...tests are kinda tough
Very mathmatical in his teaching, no room for creativity, and did not allow stud
No Comments
Fair but boring at times. Essay tests, but he helps out. Group paper. Got an A.

Logic. He was very boring would ramble. He acts a s though his opinion was the only one. Test are fairly hard multiple choice, short answer and an essay or two. I did ok in the class but will never take him again.
Very direct about what he wants. Is always willing to help those who need it. Learned a lot.

Cracks me up! I <3 this guy and his tests are so easy if you read =p
essay tests require much thought and for you to be clear and concise with your answers, kind of boring sometimes, the class makes you think though, interesting topics and viewpoints, come with an open mind
Exams are essay-format, with note card allowed. Lectures are rambling. Group paper & project at end of semester. Not difficult, but boring at times.
Kelly is such a great prof. He makes you think and teaches you so much about life at the same time. Group paper is easy to do and he gives you the questions on the essay test AND allows a 4x6 note card...What a great class!
He was a good teacher his lessons were just drawn out and very boring. The group activities are good and help your average.
Sometimes he's hard to listen to but he's so fascinating to watch his little ticks. This guy might be boring to some but you can see the passion in him over the subject matter he speaks of. Not an easy class but definitely worth while.
very interesting class if you are into philosophy. Make sure you take TR class if you write slow.
I didn't read anything, or study for this class and I still made a C. I realized I didn't need it after the drop date had already passed, but I winged it and still passed. His tests aren't that hard. Just listen in class and take notes. You'll be fine!
Does not allow many absences, lots of easy group work. Tests are hard, this is one of the most difficult 100 level classes I have taken.
Seems a little boring and wierd but in the long run gives a very comprehensive understanding.
this guy sucks. he just doesnt teach philosophy the way its supposed to be taught. hes got no emotion. if youre interested in philo, go to another school, because if you take this class, your just learning history.
i hated this class. i think the problem is the class was full of idiots. very easy, but boring and stupid. but, for a requirnment go ahead and pick him. i was absent alot, late every day, never read, and still got an easy A. horrible, but easy.
Did not like his Geography class, but I took two phil classes. Loved it. I don't know what others are talking about, I found his lectures very interesting and I love that his personal feelings don't get in the way of the info. Fair and balanced
This class is not hard but is very boring. If you go to class you are liable to fall asleep everyday. No joke. I got a B in the class. I wouldnt recommend this class if you dont like essay test.
Lots of aggravating and pointless group work. However, he's very knowledgable and clear. He does have a lot of truly annoying mannerisms.
stupidest ****ing class ever... lame
Extremely boring!! Group work becomes VERY tedious over the course of the semester. Few philosophical discussions in class, mostly just lecture.
Although he seemed to be a nice guy, bring a good book to class.
Very boring, reads straight out the book. Have to study for tests!!
extremely boring. stayed in chapter one until mid semester. good teacher, annoying manerisims, take him if you cant get into anything else
THis class is straight lecture, no class discussion. GRoup work everyday is annoying. He says "right" about 100 times per class. He does however, give you a notecard for the test to put whatever info you need on it. he gives you essay questions before test. put those on index card you will make A
i beg to differ.. he says, "as it goes" WAY too much. he was really busy this semester, but he grades easy. hes an understanding prof. take him if you dont want to learn anything and get an easy B.
dont take this class if you dont like essay tests. But he's a nice and fair guy, he does overuse "so it goes" "as it turns out", but none of us are perfect. He had a big load thrown in his lap this semester and handled it very well. Most professors would not have been able to handle it.
Absolute juggernaut of a genius! this guy can tell you anything about anything. Tests are all essay but if you have any idea what you are doing you can "BS" your way out of them...i did. Very fair and genuinely a nice guy.
Nice guy but VERY picky about alot of things, syllabus was 9 pages long and made the course sound very hard. Tests are all essay, they are pretty difficult but gives a review sheet similar to the test. Class had its moments but it was mostly boring, group work was dumb. Stayed in Ch. 1 forever!
I would not take him again....strict attendance policy, only three test essay format, boring class, not what I expected to learn ....take someone else if you can
Very boring. his test were hard because he was picky as hell on what he wanted. He was willing to help alot though which was nice. However dont take him.
He is very boring!!! Let me tell you how boring the class is, I noticed he sweats a whole lot while he is teaching!!! He teaches in very monotone voice. I went to sleep EVERYDAY in class. I still pulled off a C, but he is VERY BORING!!!!
Great teacher. true he is boring but so understanding if you are having a prob. tests are essay but easy i just studied the night b4 & made an a in the class. it gets hard but if u go talk to him you can pull off a really good grade on the test.
Dr. Salsbery is very smart and you can tell. His class may get a little boring but most of it is interestring. Got an A in it. Just study for the tests.
This man is very bright and knows his stuff. Helpful and interesting and brings new ways of thinking to the class. If you want to get anything out of this class, take part and learn like big boys and girls. Here is a real opportunity to learn something about yourself and the world around you.
Salsberry's class was hard, but in a good way. Challenging information and high expectations for levels of thinking. Good class if you have a good work ethic
Worst teacher. Never wanted to kill myself so bad in a class. very redundant. reads from the textbook. was so excited for this class and was very dissappointed. SAVE YOUR MONEY AND YOUR SANITY!!!
This man is ridiculous. U will be saying as it goes for the rest of your life. HE repaeats everythign u read in the book. His test are hard unless u r a philosphizer or something. U get to use a note card so come pre pared.. Have to buy to many damn books
All essay tests. He gives you a list of the types of questions that will be on the testbefore test day and you can make a notecard from that. Most of the stuff learned was stuff I had thought about when I was a child, so for me the class was fairly easy and boring. You do have to buy an excess of books though.
Class wasn't that hard. Use class time wisely and take notes out of the book. Only idiots can't pull atleast a B. Sleeping is not an excuse. Being absent is not an excuse. If you go to class, look interested, ask a question once in a while, the man will notice. Sleep, come in late, the man will notice.
I would definitely take him again. Only two tests the whole semester, a mid term and a final. Tests are easy and in essay format. He lets you use a notecard to help on the tests. Easy A.
This man is ridiculous! Take Padron. Dr. Salsbery is a very intelligent man, but has the personality (in class) of a rock. The in-class assignments are pointless, and the small-group work made me want to kill myself. AVOID HIM AT ALL COST!
DON'T TAKE HIM! He is very knowledgeable but all he will do is confuse you and his class is so boring. There are only 2 test a midterm & a final get to use notecards and the test are in essay form. He is not a good teacher...take someone else!
Don't recommend him at all. I took Science vs Religion with him and it was sooooo boring! The class had 5 books and he expected a paper no less than 12 pages long. His class was confusing and made me feel stupid
Boring and always says as it goes or be that as it may. Kind of annoying!
Maybe he seems boring if your not into the topic, but if you like philosophy and if you are interested in IDEAS and THINKING then Dr. Salsbery is a great professor. If you listen to what he says and not the way he says it his lectures ARE interesting. But he is much more personable and interesting OUTSIDE the classroom setting. Great Prof!
pointless class. does busy work and never really teaches.
Someone who is truly intelligent can make their subject interesting and bring it to life. If their class is boring, it is a sign that they are not THAT intelligent. In addition, he's a jerk.
One of the best professors at SFA! He is clear and concise and lets you know exactly what to do to attain a certain grade -- and its not that difficult either. He is the smartest prof at SFA.
This class was so boring. I dreaded going to his class. He blabs on and on about nothing that is helpful on the tests or quizzes. He takes off points from your grade if you miss more than 3 classes. I wouldn't recommend him.
it takes him a long time to grade your work. His class is very boring, I hated going. Don't take him!
Too much busy work not enough one on one
Dr. Salsbery is riduculously boring. I went into this class liking philosophy alot, but now I hate it. He makes you do the EXACT same thing every day, and you have to go to class, so it starts to drive you crazy. To top things off, hes a jerk. Dont take him.
DO NOT TAKE THIS GUY!! he passes out tons of useless handouts that we never look out, its so so boring, and the midterm and final reviews are impossible to complete. we do group work everyday so he wont have to teach until the last 10 minutes of class. do not take him!!!
Dropped my philosophy minor after the 1st week of my third semester with this guy. It's all so bad. "As it goes." "ahhh." That covered 1/2 the words used in a semester. Tallied once, went crazy. Every semester, he had a reason why he can't get your grades back. Don't believe any of it. He's just lazy.
Worst professor I've ever had. Annoying mannerisms, useless lecture- goes forever without really saying anything. Can be rude and a jerk, goes off on tangents for no reason. Returned grades way late, expected 12-page paper at end of semester (albeit in a group). PowerPoints look like they were made by a five-year-old, then reads directly from them.
Worst teacher EVER! The only words needed to know is "Ahh!" and "As it goes!" Attendance is mandatory; however, after you sign the attendance sheet, leave during group work. Impossible to drop class because he passes out grades the day after the drop date; however, does offer extra-cred. Is it ethical to be late as the professor of an ethics class?
Certainly not the easiest (daily in-class exercises, lots of readings/giant paper ), BUT a very good teacher, in my opinion. He does NOT like talking during class, raise your hand before commenting/asking questions, Just sit in the front row, and try to pay attention, you can easily follow and understand. You can do well if you want to.
Dr. Salsbery is a horrible teacher and a horrible person. Loses temper over stupid things and endangered our lives by damaging school property and using profanity in a uncontrolled manner. Demeaned students by asking if they were raised in a barn. Considers himself above his department chair. Gives all grades back after drop date. Do not take him!
Terrible teacher!! Loses temper and uses profanity while kicking desks. He is about as professional as a homeless person. Consistently late and under prepared. Does not return ANY grades until after the drop date! AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!
This professor is horrable. He doesn't return work on time. You get stuck with 'Busy Work'..I think because he doesn't feel like teaching the class!! He doesn't give you any help. DO NOT TAKE...if you do take him expect a really low grade.
TERRIBLE TEACHER. All tests are essays which is not too bad, or even that hard if you take full advantage of the notecard he lets you use. But the teacher himself is AWFUL and grumpy and the class is SO boring.
He is the worst teacher ever!!!! He gives you tons of handouts that are just gibberish! He barely teaches and just gives you busy work so he doesn't have to do anything! I don't know how he is still employed but DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!
If your dumb and do not attend class you will fail. while dr.salsbery cares immensely about his profession, his class is difficult. you have 2 major grades. a midterm and a final and they consist of 2 essay questions each with 3-4 pages written on each essay. while it is a very difficult class if you attend consistently you will pass with a B.
I think that the ratings of Professor Salsbery on this site are too harsh. He genuinely cares about the success of his students and will work with you if you talk to him. Modern is difficult but I don't think that the topics are beyond the comprehension of any scholar that actually thinks. It is demanding but I always knew what was expected of me.
Dr. Salsbery is a very different individual. I believe he is very intelligent, but has trouble relating to the students or making the material relate to real life. My main concern was what my grade would be. He does not give you any work back so you don't know where you need to improve on or even if you are on the right track.
Not a nice man. Avoid if at all possible! Probably knows his stuff, but does not know how to teach it. This would be bearable if he were a nice guy, but he's not. Stay away!
Awful professor. I do believe he is intelligent in his field of study, however is nowhere near adequate teaching a class. You can easily pass this class with a good forth effort, however all the stuff he makes you do is so ridiculous and unnecessary. Avoid at all costs unless you're just dying to have one of those bad professor experiences.
Dr. Salsbery is a reasonable man. His class can be difficult, so attend regularly and read your text/handouts. He gets bad reviews because he expects you to work and take his course seriously. Outside of class, he is very talkative and extremely helpful. He wants you to do well and will do his best to help. I recommend him to the serious student.
He says "right" and "as it goes" A LOT. He will put you to sleep! But the class is not hard to pass as long as you do your work. He only has two test (midterm & final) that consist of two, 4 page essays each. He also assigns a group project (12 page essay + class presentation)
If you're taking philosophy because you want to gain knowledge in that area and you enjoy studying it, you will absolutely hate this class. Salberry makes no effort to make the class intellectually stimulating. Also making an A in his class is difficult because you never really know what he's looking at and you get very little feedback about work.
Intro philosophy. Be respectful, listen and read the books. Participate well within groups. Will do well
Prior to class everyone I asked heard he was hard. The class was not that bad. It would get really boring but that was because of the material. Read the chapters he assign and listen to what he says in class and be able to write about it. You only have a midterm, a big group presentation and a final so be prepared.
What can I say about Dr. Salsberry? Well first off, he's not hard. He's just boring. Very boring. The class is extremely repetitive, with the same old routine. However, if you go to class everyday, do the focus excercises, read the book and be able to explain the material, you'll do good. Good luck.
The class was mundane, predictable, and miserable. Dr. Salsbery has no confidence in speaking and said "right" or "as it goes" after everything he murmured. He was always so unorganized and took so long to grade. I never felt prepared because Ethical theories are difficult, he was unclear on his expectations, and I had a hard time teaching myself.
This Intro. class is so boring. I have to believe that it is extremely hard to get an A in this course. The only good thing about this class is there are only 3 exams and that's it. It's not extremely hard and his reviews are basically the exams. Just make sure you can write about what you've learned. And again, this class is extremely BORING!
Salsbery get's a lot of flack because the class (especially Ethics) can be boring to the person who isn't interested in it, but he is very reasonable and helpful, and it isn't a hard class if you answer what HE wants answered on the tests. Took in Summer II and made an A, also flexible in his scheduling.
This man is not helpful. The class is very mundane. There is no student - teacher interaction. He doesn't ask any questions. One would think that philosophy is suppose to ask you the provoking questions in life, not in this class. He does not follow up with his emails or progress reports (if in an org). Bad teacher. Don't do it if you want an A.
Dr. Salsbery is a very interesting guy. If you go to class, do the focus exercises, and read the given text, you'll do fine. The class itself is really boring, and you don't really learn much about Philosophy, but its really easy to pass. I took it over the summer and studied maybe two hours for each essay test, and made a B in the class.
This was by far the WORST professor I have ever had. I would never recommend this class to anyone but hey if you take it don't say you weren't warned because I promise you this was bad. (Sophomore)
Salsbery is a brilliant philosopher which is why it is difficult for him to connect with the class. Many who take any course with him and provide the negative feedback you are reading on this profile take a philosophy course expecting an easy 'A'. Do not take any philosophy course expecting and easy 'A'. He is clear on what he expects.
Took role every day. Incredibly boring lectures, I had to force myself to stay awake. His tests were weird-you needed 100 points for an A, but there were a potential 140 points. It made them really easy because you could miss a lot and still do well.
If I could describe him in one word it would be BORING. His lectures are hell to sit through. It's an easy B, if you review his study questions and write the info you don't know on the 4x6 index card he lets you bring. I would never take him again though. His group project is a pain. Just no no no, don't take him if you don't have to.
He took forever to grade assignments! I had assignments from the first week of school that he was juts putting grades for during finals week. He also allowed us to correct some of our papers that we didn't do so well on, but they were due on Friday at 11;30p.m. and he still hadn't graded them and handed them back yet. He takes his sweet time!
Extremely boring class!!!
This class is very boring. focus exercise every class about HW. midterm and final essay tests HARD. study for them! group paper 10-12 pages your choice topic. attendance is necessary focus exercise are participation. no cells phones/laptops allowed.
I care about you all as fellow college students so let me be honest: don't take this class! You'd think since it's philosophy, you'd be able to think for yourself. Wrong! If your work doesn't reflect his thoughts, he'll fail you. The worse part is he was still assigning homework days after the class was over! I didn't even know that was possible.
There's a lot of reading and its mostly unnecessary, as there is a daily focus assignment that he requires but never grades. Takes forever to grade. Makes a boring subject excruciatingly painful to listen to. Wouldnt recommend. Exams are essays and multiple choice. Huge group project at the end. Possible to pass but hard. Notecards allowed for exam
Dr. Salsbery takes forever to grade assignments if he ever does give them back. He's very confusing does not go over the warm ups in class. For his exams he does not give enough time to write a grammatically correct essay and grades it extremely hard. Also watch out because he changed the weight of our assignments and didn't say anything.
If I could Add one more word to the bank above would be understanding. Does he want you to do a lot but if youre trying and you just dont get it I understand but also his sense of humor is different from mine and he doesnt understand that theres a difference .
I DO NOT SUGGEST THIS PROFESSOR TO ANYONE. He is terrible at giving grades back. I had to wait till the end of the semester to know what I got at the beginning of the semester. He is rude, does not respond to emails, and is a terrible professor. Also, he changes the syllabus schedule every week so don't plan anything.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER. He is incompetent, a slow grader, doesnt provide clear instructions for papers, and expects so much out of you! He doesnt understand that it is an intro class. NEVER knew my grade until the end of the semester. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND
Dont take Salsbery. Please, take any other professor in the Philosophy department. Kelly is an absolute genius, he just does not explain the material in a way you can absorb. Generally you have a midterm, and a final, plus an occasional paper. The tests are very expansive and mentally exhausting.
Whatever you do don't take this professor, i am currently in his class and i hate it. He is not a very good teacher at all he actually sucks. He is not clear on anything, he gives you stuff to try to explain how get one of his assignments done but they are just very lengthy in wording and doesn't really make sense. Doesn't really grade work.
No exams, the essays are counted as exams. Input grades on the last day of class. Unorganized. Be prepared for your opinions to be wrong. No office hours. Multiple syllabi. If your answer does not match the one in his head, you are wrong. Multiple student reply submissions (9+) a week, more than 3-5 sentences. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Very structured class, only things assigned was the homework (interactive eBook) and 4 discussion posts. This is the second time I've taken a philosophy class (failed the first time) but this class was honestly what I needed. Very clear on assignments and there was even an extra credit assignment.
Wasn’t my first choice to take this professor so I was left with no options. If you HAVE to take him choose online. Only 4 discussions and quizzes. Slow grader so you probably won’t know what your final grade is by the end of the semester. By the time you turn in your first post you won’t the grade until the second one is already due.
This class is extremely hard to follow. I take it online and the syllabus changes every two weeks or so. There is no feedback on discussions until after midterms so you dont know where you stand. Doesnt answer emails and discourages interaction with him. Awful class. Intro to philosophy shouldnt be this hard.
Terrible professor! He grades extremely hard, unlike any professor I have ever seen. Do whatever you can to NOT take this professor. His grading rubric makes no sense, if you don't make a discussion post on the first day it is assigned then you cannot get an A. There are no assignments, just two quizzes a week and one discussion post.
Was really easy for a GPA boost and another 3 credits in only an 8 week course! Lots of writing in discussion boards but no tests. 4 units so you only do 4 discussion boards, but you must reply lots in those. Highly recommend if your needing another easy credit
In order to get good grades on the discussions you must follow his instructions exactly or your grade will suffer. Does offer extra credit opportunities. No exams, only quizzes.
I personally would never take him again because he doesn't let you know half your grades until we are on the last unit. He also was hard to get in touch with and what I thought was worst of all, you won't have a course schedule so if that is something you can't live without, don't take him.
This philosophy class can be challenging, but using resources like unstuck study alongside the textbook and class discussions helped me stay on track. The grading is strict, but the lack of exams made it manageable. Overall, a good course for a GPA boost, just be prepared to put in the work.
He is very very unclear on his grading instructions and grades very difficultly for a freshman-level INTRO class. He grades incredibly slowly, as it is dead week, and I still haven't gotten back my midterm grade. He will continue to say that he is grading them soon..... Please do not choose him for this course.
He is a very kind and passionate person; HOWEVER, he is all over the place in his lectures. His lectures are scattered and unfocused and end up being more confusing than helpful. He is an extremely slow grader and is hard to talk to. I did not understand what was happening in that class 95% of the time. His D2L is disorganized and hard to use.
