1st day "You are 1 of 5 americans who has ever even stepped foot in college that makes you a scholar" i feel confident now going to college before i wasnt sure take prof kelly if you want to learn
If you ever have the opportunity to take Professor Straight (Dortch), do it! She is not only very knowledgeable in her field, but she is so kind and genuinely cares about the student's success. She's one of the best instructors I've ever had.
If you can find a more dedicated and considerate and inclusive and understanding and informed instructor, you're lying.
Kelly changed my life. Workshops, Socratic circle, freedom to express my opinions. She cares about her students which is rare in professors these days. She creates a class where respect & trust & questioning are important. You will leave with the best headache from thinking deeper than you probably ever have before. This is what college should be.
Professor Dortch set the bar for good professors. She lit a fire of passion for language inside me that I didn't know I had. She made me enjoy school and I'm forever grateful for how much she guided me to a better understanding of the world through language and culture. I took her class last year and I still think about how great my experience was.
This time last year I left Kelly's class with my head spinning with confidence. Kelly builds a community of thinkers & makes you feel that you are valued. I was in her class the day of the San Bernardino shooting & her professionalism & calm made a horrible situation bearable. She didn't ignore it or freak out. She had a plan, told us, & carried on
As a combat veteran, I've got to say that I want this lady in my foxhole (and my bed). Sorry, prof. it's the truth. She is 1 of the most capable, caring, compassionate, and charismatic people I have EVER met. She can talk on any subject, but never makes you feel dumb during the conversation. She has an energy I've never felt before. She's amazing.
sexy smart! making me love english, which isntt easy to do. don't know how the rest of the quarter will go, but so far I'm diggin it. her classes fill up fast, signup early, take here
Yes there is a LOT of reading & writing but this college. If you keep up you'll be fine. The study guide is the final & lectures are the answers. Her writing activities are super weird but somehow oddly work. Just go all in & you'll be writing decent poetry. She's funny, honest & cares about students. I never liked poetry & now I read & write it.
Ah-May-Zing! Can be slow returning work but the quality of comments makes it worth it.
Prof Straight cares! I emailed her in tears at 1 am after the election and she emailed back. Told me to call her, talked to me for an hour, checked on me the next day. The crazy thing is we still don't know her politics. She just lets us learn about us for ourselves and tells us to come back and ask her after we graduate.
Professor Dortch has been one of the most amazing professors I have had learning with. She teaches more than just English, but how writings and articles can be related to everyday life and lots of professors don't take the time to do that anymore. I truly enjoyed every activity and if you can take it, do it!
You want her. I heard students say she's their favorite professor. I don't know how she could not be. I want to take her again for ENG306 if I can.
Doesn't disappoint. Sitting in the hall, first college class, nervous, wondering what my professor's going to be like. Watching every person who might be her walk by. Then a lady walks by who makes me all tingling inside and I knew it was her. She walked in the class and I was so excited to be right. I'm glad I get to take her for 105 this time.
Professor KL Straight is a sweetheart. She is so caring and inspirational. I would take more classes with her if i had the chance. She's a great poet and invites you to explore your own creativity in a comfortable way. Pleasure to take her poetry course.
Professor Kelly Dortch is an amazing professor. Her lectures aren't mandatory but most of them are very informational and to the students benefit. Gives a ton of extra credit if you show up to class and she genuinely cares about her job and helping us with ours.
In a cIass of her own. Gives students opportunities to learn & teach. Some say she's a lot of work, but I learned more in her 1 unit class than I did in other 4 unit classes As a "ScholarEducator" she says we have the right to expect a rigorous education & the responsibility to pursue one. She's super fair even to the students who don't like her.
OMG! She made me cry my very first day of college in my very first class! I wanted to drop, but my dad said she was doing it on purpose and wouldn't let me. I AM SO GLAD! The second class she explained that education is chaos and we have to be ready for anything. She taught me so much in 1 hour 1 day a week. I want to be a teacher just like her.
Guests: school board member who was foster child, principle at alternative school, peer advisor, chairs, Teach Club, study abroad. All relevant. Missed one class but didnt cancel like most profs had TA talk about experience in credential program and as student activist. Some people just want do as little work as possible they will not like prof K
Questioning my entire existence. Now I want to teach more than ever. Is Dr Dortch too much work or more value for your $$? Is she lazy or are you because you want her to do your thinking for you? Would you be willing to stand in front of 200 people & ask for honest comments about yourself? She did & was gracious about it so we could learn assesment
Wow! First week of class and I've already learned so much. I don't find Dortch negative at all. She keeps it 100 and it's not always pretty but I appreciate the truth. She's approachable, funny, intense, passionate, and just wanted us to learn so that we can teach better. I am excited for the rest of quarter.
I changed my major to Lib Stud BECAUSE of Prof Dortch! I wasn't sure what I want to do so I took. She made elementary teaching seem so important & brought in guests who did too. I mean it all makes sense if we think about it. She makes us think about it. Whoever says it's busywork just can't understand something so different. I never missed a class
So, a small group of students keep complaining about this professor being too hard and too much work for a 1 unit class. I had her last quarter and i thoght she was relevant and funny and informative and so helpful. Besides we don't really have to read we just have to be willing to try new things and think new ideas. Tech is the future - embrace it
If there were more instructors like Dr. Dortch the world would be a much better place and Americans wouldn't be so dumb. She teaches us to think for ourselves and then makes us ask ourselves why we needed permission to think for ourselves in the first place when we should have been doing it all along. MIND BLOWN!
OMG! YES! LOVE HER! TAKE HER!
Very helpful in your education! Taking her class is a reality slap, she makes you be on top of things and shapes you into a responsible students of your education. Just be on top of things like homework and discussion posts. Take her class! You will not regret it! GIVES PLENTY OF EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITY!
She's an over all cool person, homework due every Friday but is easy. she cares and this is one of the few classes where you really learn. there is a lot of work involved in this class but it is stuff you will use in your class room or at some point, worth taking her
Is involved with her students. Takes pride in what she does and tries her best to educate her students while making them laugh and having them want to come to class.
Our class just ended and I'm devastated. I learned so much and didn't realize how much I looked forward to coming every Monday. The Professor really makes you feel important and listened to. I will miss her.
If you're willing you will learn a lot. She sets the bar high so we can see that we can reach it. She says if it's low we would never grow and we'd never learn what we're really capable of. She has an amazing life story and creates job and networking opportunities for students. She's so much more than just a professor. She will change your life.
OMG! So freaking inspiring!!!!!!!! I came in wanting to be a teacher and left understanding the importance of being an educator and an advocate. WHY DOESN'T SHE TEACH MORE CLASSES!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Gives too many assignments for a one unit course. Will not forgive if blackboard is not working and you were not able to turn it in. All assignments have to be turn in extra early with no excuses what so ever. If you are looking for an easy A look somewhere else.
Quit complaining! You want to be a teacher then you shouldn't be looking for an easy "A"you should be striving for excellence. That's what Kelly's trying to teach us. Teachers should put others first & not always think about "what's in it for me?" Besides she gives tons of extra credit & opens all assignments in advance. Stop making excuses & work
Amazing professor. I never thought about the fact that I'll be touching the lives of 900 students and their families over the course of my career. Professor says it is humbling and a huge responsibility and she is right. Take her. She will change your mind and your life.
Words of Wisdom: #1 Obedient human beings are dangerous human beings. #2 You are a scholar. #3 Question everything. #4 You have the right/responsibility to pursue a rigorous education. #5 You are the Future's future. #6 You will touch the lives of 900 students in your career. #7 Every doctor, lawyer, engineer & future teacher will be taught by you.
Where to begin? Fearless and motivational. Tells it like it is but manages to make you feel 10 feet tall and capable of anything. Doesn't take late work for any reason to teach us precision and responsibility and time management. Excuses are tools used by the incompetent. People who use them rarely succeed.
You may not agree with her, but prof Kelly is always fair.
Prof. Kelly is amazing. I was dreading another research essay class, but she changed the course and helped me create something meaningful. She really puts the INDEPENDENT into Independent Study. With my mentor, we created a sports league for migrant farm students. I never would have even tried to do this without Kelly's support. She empowers!
When does she sleep? Professor Kelly has done more for me and my major in one year than anyone has done for my whole time at CSUSB. She gets stuff done and makes things happen. TAKE HER! TALK TO HER! You will LOVE her!!!
The professor I love to hate. She just plays with my emotions every class. She says the most simplest, obvious thing and I'm thinking about it for days afterward. I just want an easy A. I just want my degree. I don't want to think and be responsible for myself and thoughts haha. Seriously, she can't walk to class without people stopping to hug her.
YAAASSS! From makeup to pickups - she talks about it all and incorporates it all seamlessly into her lessons. I learned so much from her. Now I'm about to graduate and she's not teaching anymore classes I need. I wasn't prepared for how sad I'd be until I stopped by her office the other day and asked if she was teaching anymore and she said no. :(
Everything she does is for a reason and those reasons really make you think about how important being an educator is.
A teacher's teacher. She teaches the lesson then allows students to deconstruct the lesson for rationale/effectiveness. Even the lessons are layered. Each lesson has the obvious outcome and then there are additional longterm/shortterm outcomes that she teases out of us as we deconstruct. She's happiest when we come up with one she didn't think of.
Had 2 classes so far and we've had more extra credit than assignments (12:1). I am going to frontload as much extra credit as possible, but this is crazy. She's super interesting though and inspiring.
Have you ever gotten goosebumps from hearing someone speak? I get them every time with Prof. Kelly. She is so inspirational. She makes me want to be a better, smarter, stronger, harder working teacher.
Everything she teaches applies to our major. So helpful.
I thought I was going to graduate in spring, but Professor Dortch really went through my PAWS report and found classes miscategorized from my community college and then arranged an independent study for me and now I get to graduate this fall.
crazy. extreme. but i learn more from her one hour one unit class then i do in any of my four units classes.
Amazing! I loved this class. You learn a lot for it being a 1 unit class. If you do not pass her class its because you were simply being lazy. Shell make everything clear the first day.
I can't stay away from here. I have taken 6 classes with her and I love everything about her teachings. If you don't like here, that means you're not willing to work. She is very loving and inspirational. She is an awesome human being and continues to inspire many. Very well respected in my book.
So, I'm about to graduate and I finally get it. Transfer year I hated her. I thought she was psycho. Now I see she's given students more opportunities than they ever had before. We never had tutors or internships or special opportunities just for us. She's brought energy into the program and I feel more prepared to teach than I could ever imagine.
I've never had so many opportunities as I have with Kelly. She creates community and always shifts the focus back onto students. We've been invited to council meetings, open forums, interviews, to meet the Dean, community leaders. She includes us in syllabus and course decisions and has started so many new initiatives in Liberal Studies. I will mis
Three weeks of class and I've learned so much! World Peace Game, Freedom Writers, Game Theory, Reggio Emilia, Multiple Intelligence, Paolo Friere, Jane Elliot, Charlene Teters. I'm presenting at OSR. Have taught kids the Socratic Method. And learned how oral tradition and sound are important for certain cultures of children. She's changed my life!
I just met Professor Dortch during transfer orientation. I'll be taking her Hum197 in the Fall. I can't wait! Just listening to her passion for education and our success and hire much she cares had truly inspired me. I can't wait to start school at CSUSB with her as my advisor and professor. She's incredible!
This class is a lot of work but completely worth it. I've learned so much and realize how important being an educator is. I mean I always knew but now I KNOW. She is amazing and includes students in everything she does.
I look at teaching totally different now. Life changing.
AMAZING! Just do the work and you should be good. Stay on top of homework and you'll be fine. She is so inspiring and I respect everything she does for the department. Ignore what people say about her. She is down to earth and one of the best professors on campus.
She believes that as future educators we need to hold ourselves to the highest standards. Most people don't like that. They want an easy A. I didn't understand her my first year here as a transfer. I didn't like her. But now that I have graduated I feel more prepared and ready for the next step because of her. She is right, I am the future's future
There is a lot a work to do but pretty easy , PLEASE ASK QUESTIONS IF YOU HAVE SOME TO HER! She is very straightforward and really good Prof
Do you want to be the leader people trust and follow? Want to make a difference in the world? Make meaning from your life? Want to be inspirational? Then take Kelly's classes. Ask her questions. Go visit her in her office. Let her be your mentor and you will learn from the best. She will change your life for the better forever. GUARANTEED!!!
Why aren't there more professors like Professor Dortch at CSUSB? She's so committed to students and our success. Meet her, talk to her, before you judge her. She'll change your life if you let her. She's a hardcore student advocate and sometimes she's misunderstood. Meet her yourself before basing your opinion on other people's rumors.
Kelly is so unhelpful and does not care about students. You will learn more talking to a rock than talking to her. I'm considering switching schools because of how HORRIBLE the liberal arts program is and the lack of guidance and support for students.
Prof. Dortch does the most for students by providing so many opportunities we've never had before. Before, we just came in, graduated and left. She has provided experiences. The students who don't like her are the ones who just want someone to think for them and give them all the answers. Take some responsibility for your own educations.
I was ready to drop out and Kelly spent so much time with me talking about my interests and goals. She helped me come up with a project that I am so excited about. I want to be a professor now and this would;t have happened without her love support and guidance,
i never had a professor like professor dortch before. she promised that her class wouldnt be like any other that i ever had and she was right. she opened my eyes and my mind. i will be a much better educator because of her. she is amazing. she inspires us to be our best and reach higher. give her a chance and she will change your life to
Professor Dortch is a fantastic professor. She made you think about teaching in a whole new way. I enjoyed going to class to see what I would learn that day.
Prof Kelly is the best! She really makes you think about what it means to be an educator. She taught us about Gabriel Fernandez before the documentry. We do internal bias and ADD/ADHD sensitivity awareness activities. Caring about students doesn't mean babying us. She cares and wants us to challenge ourselves so we will be the best for our students
She really helped me figure out a meaningful independent study project. It has been so much fun doing something I'm passionate about while using all of the skills and knowledge I have learned throughout my college career.
All my friends are freaking out that they haven't passed their CSETs yet. I did in Prof Kelly's class and I'm so thankful for her tough love because I'm ready for credentialing. I don't understand students who complained about taking the tests. We have to do it anyway and doing for HUM397 really helped prepare me. I can't thank professor enough.
Sitting here bored with "stay at home" order. Wondering what to do. Write a review! Where to begin with Dortch. Love her or hate her you will learn from her even if you don't realize you're learning. I just want to say that I hated her at first and then realized I learned more from her than my 4unit class. Why is that? I'm so glad she was my prof
Haven't taken professor dortch's class yet - i'll have her in the spring - but she is the only one of my professors who has been in constant contact with our class since we all went into lock down. I really appreciate that. I helps knowing what's going on and what to expect. She has been so great about making me feel better about my classes online.
Since I met Kelly, my colleagues & I have worked with refugees, ESL immigrants, K-12s & their families of all ages/abilities, an NEA award-winning teacher, an award-winning poet-professor, AND a foreign govt. We've written (and are writing) books, presented at conferences, & recorded radio programs & videos for millions. We're just getting started!
In this class I felt like I didnt learn anything about my major- liberal studies. To me it felt more like busy work. The lectures werent even lectures since we would talk about random things not related to the course and I would not take this class again but there was a lot of extra credit.
BEST!PROFESSOR!EVER!
Thank you Professor Dortch for everything you have done for me and for everyone in our program. Thank you for being there when ever we need you. Thank you for the opportunities you have created for us and for challenging us to think for ourselves in a system that wants robots. Thank you for being you and for helping us learn who we are. We love you
Professor Dortch has a unique teaching style and really cares about you. I only took a star off because the group projects were very frustrating, dull, and felt like a waste of time. However class discussions were very interesting and I learned things!
Prof Dortch, Prof Kelly or just Kelly (she wants you to call her what makes you comfortable) is the best. I have been in school for 7 years and have never received the quality of feedback that I get from her. Her help on my eportfolio and CV are invaluable. Not to mention she assigned Pedagogy of the Oppressed and my mind is fully blown. I love her
Love her or hate her, you will NEVER forget her. And when you get to UofR for credential you will learn that everything she was trying to teach you matters. Read Pedagogy of the Oppressed and Loris Malaguzzi's lectures and you WILL understand Professor Dortch. Then before you reject her methods ask yourself "why." Maybe you've been conditioned.
Read Pedagogy of the Oppressed and take Professor Dortch. Mind blown. Mic drop. You're welcome.
She's amazing and passionate on education. Prof just wants what is best for you and gives you necessary knowledge for your future! Hands down a m a z i n g!!!
She makes you work for it, but man is it worth it. I have never received the kind of in depth feedback I get from Prof Dortch. It was invaluable and I will be coming back to her student hours (or former student hours since I graduated) to get more. Yeah, that's right, she has student hours and opens herself up to assist former students then too.
INCREDIBLE! INSPIRING! THOUGHT PROVOKING! Kelly is an excellent teacher. She provides many opportunities for extra credit, is understanding, and flexible. If you do your work and communicate, it is an easy A! She is great at prepping you for the world and diverse communities. She is knowledgeable and helps a lot.
Kelly's sensational. We didn't just read Pedagogy of the Oppressed she built our whole class around it so we could see the principles in practice. She regularly stayed when discussion was strong. She adjusted as we went along to accommodate for COVID. This was my first university class and the only one I actually made friends in. Simply the best!
What's not to love? Great book choice for future educators. Able to create community online among strangers who are taking their first university course during COVID. Hosting regular "after parties" when discussion runs over. Checking in on students after surgeries, family deaths, etc. Letting kids come to class and engaging them too! Love her!!!!
I love this woman so much! I was ready to quit after the first day and she just wouldn't let me. She emailed me, called me, I called her. We texted. She kept saying she wouldn't let me extinguish my own light. I am about to finish my first semester at a university and I am so proud of myself. I PASSED! But I couldn't have done it without Professor
If you are already enrolled in her class, I recommend getting a head start on reading the Pedagogy of the Oppressed. She definitely gets you engaged as much as she can. There's a lot of group projects and weekly writings. Overall, if you put in the effort you will get an A!
Professor Dortch is such an amazing educator. I definitely recommend taking her course. Her class is synchronous, so don't miss her zoom meetings. You have to get the book, and you'll need to read it for meetings and an essay. A few group projects and not much "homework". Really get to know her, she is awesom! She will help you grow as an educator!
Kelly is the only one of my 5 professors who actually held class, answered emails, was available outside of class, held regular office hours/student hour), and was flexible with assignments based on student needs. Besides I learned more in her 2 unit class than in my 3 and 4 unit classes. Then again, I was teaching myself in those other classes :-
Extraordinary! Best professor at CSUSB. Best book ever written Pedagogy of the Oppressed. A whole different way of teaching and learning. Trust her. Trust the process. It's different. She's different. But all totally worth it. You will learn. She's the best.
Prof. Dortch is amazing. She is always there to help you. She always answers your questions. If you communicate with her when you have a problem, she will work with you to help you resolve it. She was always available for questions. Pedagogy of the Oppressed, hard read, but so worth it! She has her own style to help you learn. Highly recommend!
If you are really passionate about being a good teacher, TAKE THIS CLASS. Prof Dortch gives you the means, inspiration, and help to be a great teacher. She cares about her students , but even more so she cares about our future students and that is what really matters!
This might be the most incredible person I have ever met. I want to cry tears of joy, passion, & excitement every time I'm in her classroom. I can't wait to be a teacher and make a difference thanks to her. This class is everything. I wish I could take it 1,000,000,000 more times. I cannot imagine what it must be like to have such a beautiful brain
Get ready to work! But in a good way. It may seem hard at first but there is a reason for the assignments and you will thank Professor Dortch in the end. Attendance is mandatory and honestly class goes by so fast you won't even feel it. Class is very much discussion based and so much is learned. Highly recommend Professor Dortch
You really learn in this class. Prepares to become a great future educator.
You always hear people say that school does not prepare you for the real world... well Prof. Dortch does. She helps you learn to navigate CSUSB, prepare to apply to jobs after graduation, and gives you tools to help you be a better teacher. This is a top notch teacher and a top notch class.
In this class I felt inspired every day. Kelly teaches in a way that allows students to think for themselves and learn different teaching styles by participating in them. She encourages Socratic/democratic style learning so students have a voice and are able to start building ideas and thoughts about their own classrooms and college experience
I have never had a teacher like this. Inspiring lectures that help you in school.
This class changed my life, my mindset, and my spirit. She is amazing.
She takes time to learn our names, let's us bring kids and pets to zoom during COVID, stayed after every single online class during COVID until the last student left just to make sure everyone got what they needed and sometimes just to give us a space to talk and get to know each other and build a learning community. She REALLY believes in communit
She has a habit of cancelling class 10-30 minutes before it starts, has an awful attitude, talks down to students, very vague about certain assignments. Honestly doesn't seem to care if you fail. If you had trouble completing an assignment and you have to turn it in late, she will NOT be forgiving. Expects you to see her class as top priority.
Best professor EVER! Respects and cares about students. Treats us like adults. Canceled class due to car accident. Who wouldn't? Syllabus says no late work and explains why it's an equity issue. Assignments encourage independent active and critical thinking. Trusts us to be experts on ourselves and how we learn best. This IS college after all.
I really like that she challenges us. I feel inspired to try harder and find myself thinking about what she said long after class is over. She puts it all out there for her students and asks us to do the same for ourselves. She's not like other professors and that's what makes taking her class meaningful.
Just dont take Kelly and and if you do good luck Kelly is extra and just the absolute worst teacher I have ever had
I've been going to school for six years and had Professor Kelly twice. Both times I learned something new about myself. This time I'm graduating and with her guidance I have learned so much about myself and about what I've learned and why it matters and why I matter. I am going to be a teacher and I hope I am half as transformative to my students!
I'm not sure who the 1s are talking about because Professor Dortch goes out of her way to do everything she can to help and support students. She helped me get into the classes I need and find resources when I found out I was pregnant. I've seen and heard about her giving students food and gas money out of her own pocket and she never tells anyone.
Group projects and gives class time to complete them for our convenience. Meets us around our schedules including early mornings, late nights, and weekends. What professors do you know who do that? Will spend as long as needed with us whenever we need her. Teaches us to advocate by advocating for us. Includes students in decision making process.
Very unprofessional. Doesnt accept late work even if youre in ER. Only good thing is she does give lots of extra credit so DO IT! But no matter what your grade is if you dont complete a certain assignment she will fail you.
The fairest professor I've ever taken. She treats everyone EXACTLY the same and gives plenty of extra credit to pass. The students who get really angry are the ones who want special treatment for their situation. Let's be honest, everyone has a reason for their situation and thinks their reason is valid. So she accepts none. It's called equity.
Former student here. Kelly's equitable and fair! She goes out of her way for students ALL THE TIME! What you don't see: the air mattress in her office for the 5 am mornings and midnight grading and email, the lies and abuse she puts up with for her students, the sadness when she has to fail a student. She cares that you LEARN and not just pass.
I'm a teacher today because of Kelly. I was ready to drop out and she wouldn't give up on me. She showed me all CSUSB resources to help me stay in school. She filled my gas tank and walked me over to CAPS. She made sure I had food and kept checking in on me until I was ready to come back and finish my degree. She took my calls at 3 in the morning
When my grandmother passed professor Dortch kept in touch with me and had me come to her office just to talk or cry or whatever I needed. She checked my syllabus for all my classes when I came to visit to make sure I stayed on track. I've taken her for 2970 and 4970 and now have my own class because she never lost faith in me.
Would not recommend. I have never felt so belittled by a professor the way she made me and others feel. Not to mention she is an advocate about making sure students are heard and yet takes weeks to respond to emails. She is manipulative in a manner that she truly only cares for herself and how her image looks but does not care for her students.
I learned so much about being an educator and advocate from Kelly. She has amazing guest speakers and really prepares us for the real world of teaching. I love her! She even checked on me regularly after my surgery and remembers all of her students by name. Don't like how long she takes to answer email - GO TO HER OFFICE! She shares tea and snacks.
The worst professor in the entire school she puts students down consistently I would never ever take Kelly ever very manipulative
I absolutely LOVE professor Dortch. She is not only a great professor but an absolutely fantastic advisor. Her class consisted of metawritings and a group project, not hard at all you just cannot slack on assignments. If you get to know her, she is an awesome human being with an honest personality and that is hard to find in professors nowadays.
Professor Dortch is amazing she cares about her students. She dedicates so much time to her students. She is inspirational and passionate about her work with her students.
Considered dropping out because of the way Kelly addressed us one day in class. It was the worst experience I've had in a classroom ever. Pretty ironic since she labels herself a student advocate.
Im actually really surprised she has so many good reviews & a high score. I know a lot of people who have taken her class & really disliked her. She honestly views herself as a student advocator but is the complete opposite. she is not compassionate towards students & I felt like she didnt even care about the class. Is super strict & inaccessible
This is my 3x taking Prof Dortch and she is amazing and caring and always there for us. She didn't have to give any of us a second chance for cheating and she did. She doesn't have to give us class time to complete our group projects and she does. She doesn't have to zoom with students at 9 o'clock at night and she did - for almost two hours!
Teachers are just the people who are willing to tell the truth through education and collaboration when the world likes to sugarcoat things. Kelly really emphasizes this and holds herself up to this standard. Put in the work and Professor Dortch will make sure you have all the resources you need to be successful in all your classes & later in life.
The difference between Prof Kelly's high ratings and low ratings is the high ratings are from people who are ready to learn to teach second graders and the low ratings are from people who want to be taught like second graders even though we're in college. Take Kelly. She will change your life forever if you let her. Trust her. Trust the process.
It's really interesting that she has such great reviews going back years and all of a sudden gets a dozen reviews this term, all bunched up, and all pretty much saying the same thing Seems like one or two people posting multiple times in a "cancel culture" kinda way. She's the most caring hardworking professor I've ever met. Take her! She's great.
Honest. Caring. Transparent. Really prepares us to be educators. Always on our side and fighting for our student rights. Included us in review and asks our opinions on how to improve program. Listens to us. Makes time for students even after hours. Pumps students up. Tells us we matter and means it. You won't find a more dedicated professor.
Life got hard and I thought the only thing I can do is drop out but Kelly called me as soon as she got my request and got me help. She kept checking on me and worked with my other professors to help me get my life back on track and not drop out off school. I'm going to catch up over the summer and be back full strength in the fall. Thank you Kelly!
Tell me why I'm graduating a year and half sooner than expected - professor Dortch, that's why! She sat down with me and we went over what I want to do with my life and everything in my PAWS and where I'm at in my life right now and she made sure I was in the correct major for my goals and that I received credit for every course possible! LOVE HER
Reading Pedagogy of the Oppressed really opened my eyes and the class discussions and after-class discussions really changed my life. Yes, Professor Dortch stays after class whenever she can to allow space and time for those of us who want to keep the discussion going. The after class discussions are always so insightful. She's always there for us.
Professor Dortch is patient and kind. I was going through a really difficult time and she helped me understand my rights as a student and the resources available to me. I read all the group me about cheating and talked to her and I don't blame her for not going to each student one on one. There were 100+ students involved and she let them resubmit
Interesting and by interesting I mean weird that the negative reviews are all grouped together and all basically use the same terminology over and over again. Take Kelly, do the reading, come to class, go to her office, don't cheat, and you'll do great. She really cares about us, what we learn, and how we learn. Teaching is clearly her passion.
I wish there were more professors like Dortch. She has a unique way of looking at things and teaches us how to find our own voices and perspectives. She doesn't want us to just learn to answer questions. She wants us to question the answers, her, everything. She makes it safe to push boundaries and seek our own answers from our own experiences.
I've taken Kelly 3x now. She's one of a kind. During COVID she was the only professor I had that cared. She was always available. She'd stay on zoom after class was over for anyone who needed more interaction. She would hold evening and weekend hours to help us stay connected. She let us bring our kids and pets. She is super understanding.
Best professor. Period. She actually teaches. She holds you accountable for your own learning AND gives you a safety net to catch you. You're free to make mistakes while you learn AND allowed to recover from those mistakes. That's education! You will grow AND grow up!
Assignments are easy. Content informative. Class should be divided into 3 parts: freshman, transfer, liberal arts to be more helpful to each group. When I took the course it was very inclusive. I gave the 5 because she's a problem solver. I've had to go to her a bunch of times for different things and she always fixes it. She's so encouraging!
I LOVE this professor so much! She bends over backwards to help me & my classmates. Not only that, she always checks back in on us now & again just to make sure we're still doing okay. She even checked on me after my niece was born & she checked on my friend after she bought her first house. You will not meet a more caring professor or human being.
I was so inspired from her performance on the very first day and she kept amping up the inspiration every day after. I am even more convinced that I want to be an educator and I hope to inspire others like she does.
Those that don't like her REALLY don't like her but those who love her LOVE HER! She teaches in an unusual way that makes people have to be active in their own educations. You can't just sit back and get a grade. No, you have to stretch your brain into making room for new ways of thinking. If you can grow and appreciate the unusual you will LEARN!
I'm a paraeducator finishing my credential. If you think Kelly hurts your feelings then you're really not ready to go into the field. Kelly is kind caring and just trying to prepare us for the reality of this career. Education's a contact sport. You will get bruised. So many of us leave because we're not prepared. Kelly is just trying to prepare us
I can't say enough good things about this professor. She's caring, compassionate, and will fight for her students all the way to the end. She is not a pushover and we are college students not babies. She sets standards and helps us reach them. Her assignments are so helpful and I learn so much from her (in and outta the classroom). I just love her
Professor Dortch is one of the most caring people Ive ever met. She goes above and beyond and always makes time for students. She is so passionate that she sometimes gets choked up when sharing a story or encouraging us to prevail. She really truly cares. Ive talked to her and she is always encouraging me and finding ways to help me stay in school
I don't understand the negative reviews. Kelly is kind, funny, and knowledgable. She cares and practices what she preaches. She has over 1,000 students and makes it a point to try to learn everyone's name and details about each of us. She greets us in the hall and encourages us to be "risk takers" in class. Take her class. You will love it and her.
Professor Dortch is an amazing professor and she always welcomes your opinion. She's always up for having conversations about controversial topics and is very passionate about certain things. When we have conversations she makes sure everything stays respectful. This class doesn't have a heart work load either.
Building a community is hard, building a community during COVID is crazy, but Kelly did just that with our online class. She would stay online after as long as anyone wanted to stay. She welcomed, animals, kids, and other family members to the zoom room. Her classes are organized but not predetermined. she adjusts to fit students' interests.
Kelly's classes are the only ones where I feel truly heard, seen, and supported. Everyone gets a voice, even those that disagree and she masterfully brings passionate point of views into Freire dialogues.
My favorite professor and my favorite class. I only wish I would have taken the class sooner and that I could take more classes with professor Dortch. I honestly would take her every term if I could.I always learn so much from her.
This class couldn't be easier to pass, unless you can find one where you don't even have to show up for class. Basically, show up for class, talk about the reading, do a little extra credit as assignment insurance and you're going to pass and you're going to REALLY LEARN! 10 out of 10!
This professor is awesome. Period.
I can't believe this class is over and how sad I am about it. She says she's more interested in learning than grades and she means it. It takes some getting used to because we've been so institutionalized to chase grades but when we stop worrying about grades we're really free to learn what's important to us. I'd take her for every class if I could
I learned more in a 2 unit class with only 3 assignments then I did in all of my other courses combined. The focus is on learning. Isn't it ironic that this is even a thing that needs to be mentioned at an institution of higher ed? Highly recommended!
Professor Dortch led our class in a way that made us all feel valued and our voices were heard. This was a true community of learning
Want to learn? Want to learn about learning? Want to unlearn old ways of thinking to make room for new? Want to feel your brain stretch? Take Professor Dortch. You won't be sorry.
This professor is fantastic. Classes are more career oriented and you actually feel like a teacher when taking her class. She doesn't give a lot of homework, classes are graded heavily on group projects, the reading of the pedagogy of the oppressed, participation, and attendance, and the metawriting which are all easy. I would retake 100%.
This is a more career oriented class then you go on to read Pedagogy of the Oppressed and do a few group assignments in class and discuss the book. You are responsible for journaling each class session which you get credit for. There is basically no homework and she doesn't stress grades. You do have to make a group video. Very fun and easy class
The focus is on learning not grades. Honestly this takes some getting used to but once you free your mind and trust the process the class is great and Professor Dortch is refreshing straightforward.
Cal 2970 is designed to assist students transitioning into the liberal studies program and the diverse avenues within the program. This should be a seminar not an entire semester. Her grading is straightforward and the group project is fun.
I don't normally do this but I just had my first class with professor Dortch and all I can say is WOW! I am SO inspired and so much more committed to being a teacher now. I can't wait for the rest of this semester! I've been in school for a long time with gaps for having my family and she is the best professor I have ever had in twenty years!
Was an easy class with light amount of assignments. You can tell she's passionate about what she does.
Had her for ENG 1210, very easygoing class. If you do the readings (which are very manageable) and show up to class to participate in discussions, you are guaranteed to pass! You will definitely have to get out of your comfort zone if you're not used to public speaking, but she really makes sure that it's a safe learning environment for everyone.
Professor builds learning communities so we learn together. Pick good group partners, come to class, do the reading, and complete the SOTE and you'll pass. She really tries to make sure that everyone passes but have to participate.
MY FAVORITE CLASS! I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE THE WORKSHOPS! I LEARNED SO MUCH AND AM INSPIRED TO WRITE MORE POETRY!
Unlike any teacher I've ever had. To be fair, she warned us that she teaches differently than others. She is amazing! I learned so much, but first I had to unlearn what I was conditioned to believe. I'm a better human being after taking her class and I know I will be a better teacher because of what I've learned from her too.
This was a FIVE HOUR online zoom class and because of how professor Dortch teaches it didn't feel like 5 hours at all. How's that even possible? It was an amazing class! I loved it! I learned allot and she really cares about her students. She asked our opinions on how to run the class and actually listened. LOVE LOVE LOVE HER!
Like someone else said the class was 5 hours long and didn't even feel like it. It was so informational and inspirational. We were always going in and out of breakout rooms and doing different activities so it never got boring. Not all writing was academic. Some was also creative. It was a nice mix and this is from someone who's not creative.
Blown away! So I went to office hours to answer a question and ended up just hanging out and oh my gawd! She is so amazing to talk to. Even if she's not your professor you should stop by any time her door is open. The stuff she knows is amazing and she is so helpful and encouraging.
I wish more classmates talked, but that's not her fault. She creates a space where everyone could talk if they wanted to, they just don't want to. I can't think of anything more awful than literature lectures by power point. Thank the lord she doesn't do that. She makes literature fun and relatable but COVID hurt our ability to talk to each other.
Professor Dortch makes this class engaging and enjoyable. The workload is manageable, with more emphasis on participation, group projects, and discussions than exams. Unstuck ai was a great study tool to supplement the reading and prepare for class. Overall, a rewarding experience.
She's a really amazing and open professor. The only thing is that she LOVES group work. If you're introverted or not really into working with other students, then this may not be the class for you. There is a group essay at the end so beware, but she does offer loads of silly extra credit.
I HATE group projects and as someone said she LOVES them. BUT they're not that bad. She sets it up so that we hold each other accountable in the group. If you have to do all the work or none of the work you will hate it but if you're a normal human who can get along with other humans you will love it. I did and i would do it again.
She creates such a welcoming and safe space. I feel like I can talk to her about anything and she listens and she cares and she challenges me to think deeper. I really like that. I hope to stay in touch when I graduate. She's awesome!
The first teacher to make me feel seen and she really cares. Her work includes everyone with all point of views. She listens and respects diversity and student opinions. She actually likes it when students disagree with her because she says it means we are thinking for ourselves so she's done her job.
Super chill but doesn't take any kind of late work for ANY reason but does give lots of extra credit to make up points. Will do everything to work with you if you want to work to pass but will not take late work or excuse absences but again offers tons of extra credit to make up for it. Fair.
Yes! Just yes! Take her! Go for the ride, be changed forever.
Workshop is the best. She gives the best feedback. Just don't use AI for anything and come to class. That's all she asks. Easy A. Too much extra credit.
LOVE KELLY!! Understanding, lenient, & no bs. Just do what you're assigned and be yerself, Kelly makes sure the prompts for some of the assignments are fun & flexible. Lecture wise, reading is VERY interesting but definitely prep for group work and interaction. Attendance is mandatory and late turn-in's are docked, but Kelly wants you to have fun.
You ever had one of those professors that you just want to sit and talk to? Yeah, Kelly's that. She's got such a chill and unique way of looking at the world and when she shows you you can't help but want to see it that way too. I've spent hours just chopping it up with her. Dopeness!
Totally unique way of teaching! I actually feel like I'm learning and not just getting a grade. Challenging but not so hard to be impossible. I'm taking her again for as many classes as I can. You should too.
SO COOL! She calls groups teams and coaches us just like sports in workshops. She holds free agency drafts for students who are absent. It's the best. She won't take your late work but if you let her know what's going on she will offer solutions to make up points elsewhere. If you don't get a A then it's on you.
Can't say enough great things about her. Trust. You want her in your life Take her classes as many times as you can.
Just show up for class and you'll pretty much pass. If you don't show you lose major points and she doesn't offer as many attendance extra credit points as she does assignment extra credit points. But her insight is beautiful and inclusive and visionary. I am taking her again for another class. Can't wait.
In what other college class will the professor encourage you to write an essay about skibidi toilet or hawk tuah? She gets where you come from and thinks its important to be open to see how you really use language and why all language is important. God, I just love her.
Group work - yes. BUt think of it as team work and it's much better. She is great at giving assignments that help build the team. I am so glad I made such great freidns with my team. This is so important to freshmen like me.
I got a B because I missed a ton of class when my grandfather passed. My grade would have been worse if Profs Dortch didn't give so much extra credit. Even then I could have gotten an A but I was just tired and over it and didn't turn in the big portoflio extra credit at the end. I love my team I love this class.
My team was great. We are still friends. She doesn't ask too much. Just come to class, don't use AI, participate in class discussions and activities and you will get an A and you will learn a lot. I look at everything differently now and I question everything and. everyone.
Professor Dortch has been my professor in 3 different classes in 2 differnet majors using 4 different books and I'd take her again. If you do the reading, show up for class and talk yiu'll pass. The workload is manageable and the reading is interesting. Pedagogy of the Oppressed is no joke. Take your time and you;ll get through it. The rest is easy
During the wildfires Kelly was great. She doesn't take late work but made sure that I had everything needed so that I would have one less hing to worry about. She sent me the reading and gave me her number in case I needed anything else. She also looks at the lowest scores and tries to make extra credit available to help those students out as well.
I just graduated and had Kelly for several classes. I have never met a more courageous, committed, kind person in my life. She's a fighter for the underdog and true believer in the greatness that we each have inside. She's not only the best professor I have ever had she's also one of those humans I will remember forever for all of the right reasons
This class was totally different than any other class I have ever had. The coolest thing is that you're learning and it doesn't even feel like it but you are left thinking about what was talked about in class hours, days and weeks after the class has ended. Kelly makes learning fun and meaningful. What I learned in her class I will use IRL.
First day ever in college and first college class ever and OMG it's going to be so lit. I am uber inspired. Amazing first day. So excited for whats next in this class. Kelly is incredible. I'm glad I'm here and in her class.
Saw Kelly today and was reminded to rate her. All the great stuff posted about her is true. She really cares about people and will give you her last. She's the kind of person who'll make you believe in yourself and bring out the best in you. Doesn't mean she's easy, but she's fair. Visionary. Has a unique perspective. Have taken 4 classes with her.
She is amazing! By far my favorite professor. Gives lots of extra credit and understands that life happens. Take her class, you won't regret it.
Gives extra credit, grades heavily if you're in class AND participating during discussion and activities. This is not a professor for anyone who doesn't want to come to class or be noticed in class. Takes every effort to learn all our names. Has crazy, weird activities but I always learned and understood more during the debrief portion of class
Ever known one of those people that you know has changed your life forever? Yeah, that's Professor Dortch. She's different in the best way. Please take her class. You'll thank me.
Sensational. Period. Full stop. I've never had a better professor ever. The best.
Best teacher at CSUSB take her if u can
I stayed in school because of Kelly. She asks us what we think and really listens. She still teaches the subject but is so flexible and can talk on any subject and still teach us. It's crazy how we learn while having fun.
DOOOOOOOPE! Coolest professor ever. Great energy. Knows her stuff. Makes mind-blowing connections. Brain stretcher for sure!
I'm gutted this semester's almost over. I want more time with Kelly> I've got so much more I want to learn from her. What other professor do you know that can talk about lipstain, college football, and gyatt while lecturing on racism, language debates, and the constitution for our video essay assignment? She's so dank.
Professor Dortch was amazing. I learned so much in her class. Her lectures just really open your mind and make you ponder on certain topics for awhile. She does a great job making you critical think on the questions she asks. Her activities are so engaging and her the group projects are a blast and fun when you put your creativity together.
Think about all the stuff you hate about group projects and Professor Kelly has a solution to make them a whole lot less awful than you would expect. In her class group projects are actually fun! You learn much more and you make friends to cover when you can't come to class. She's funny, relatable and smart and she makes you feel smart too.
Our generation hasn't had to speak since COVID and now it's scary. Kelly (Professor Dortch) makes us want to participate. Teachers have made me feel self conscious in the past but Kelly makes me believe in myself. I'm so proud of how much I've grown. One of her favorite sayings is she'll believe in us until we're ready to believe in ourselves.
I understand why this professor is so popular. Chill, relatable, funny and genius. Makes connections that make me understand deeper. Would take again 1000%.
I'm Latinx dual major. Had one prof tell the class she doesn't workshop because it's colonialist. Prof. Dortch workshops in a way that is actually empowering. Her workshops focus only on content suggestions with the writer having final editorial authority. In fact, hers is the only class where I have actually gotten any kind of meaningful feedback.
Read. Show up. Talk. Pass. A+
They really do read everything. I am surprised and happy. I've never received such helpful feedback and encouragement from a teacher before.
YES! Just yes! Everything about them and the class is a yes. Not a hard class to pass but I learned so much and it was easy. Mindblown!
The best teacher I have ever had in my entire life. Would definitely take again for as many classes as possible.
It is impossible to say enough good things about professor Dortch. You will not find a better or more caring or more knowledgable professor. When I first met her I thought she was just another adult trying to be young and relatable. I was wrong. She really is about freedom and she knows so much about so much and is willing to learn too. Incredible.
Just had an interview and EVERYTHING that professor Dortch taught us is so so true. I crushed it because I was prepared. She is the single most influential teacher I ever had while I was in school. I wish I knew how to reach her to thank her in person. The university failed by replacing her.
Would take her three more times if I could! She always talks about process learning over product learning. What that means is she's more interested in how we're learning and how we worked through the final project than the final project itself. It's a totally refreshing way to learn. The project is for us to know we're done. She values the journey.
I'm so glad I took this class, she's very flexible and easy to talk to
professor dortch is honestly amazing. she really makes you want to dig deeper and her lectures are interesting. i love her group activities and she's always happy to help you have a better understanding on certain things. participation DOES matter but her assignments are pretty easy. she gives extra credit buts its also really simple things too.
Great Professor! As long you show up to class and participate you're guaranteed to pass. She also offers a lot of extra credit.
