take all of her classes and you wont regret it. best prof i have ever had. show up EVER CLASS take notes EVERY CLASS and i promise you will get an AMAZING MARK
best prof I have had by far. knows the course material and actually makes you want to go to class. if i get the chance to have her again, i would.
Attend every lecture and take good notes. She gives you the MC questions before every test and they're based directly on her lectures. For the research essay, follow her instructions very closely and you'll do more than fine. Attend the thesis statement workshop too. I didn't buy the textbook(s) and I still got an A.
Kelly is super funny and her lectures are engaging. She is not easy to approach and can be timid at times. Her tests are difficult and worded really complexly. She use to give out full questions and answers for exams, now she gives out questions, that were completely different on the exam anyways.
Bottom line, she's a blunt person and if you can't take criticism well, you won't like her. I loved her as a professor because she repeats herself over and over in lectures to make sure you get what she's saying for your notes. She kinda scares you for the essay but if you buckle down and put in the work, you'll be fine. Same goes for the exams.
Kelly can be intimidating and isn't afraid to tell you off. Attend all lectures, write everything down. She gives you the test before basically and clearly outlines everything. Content NOT hard. I don't enjoy the attitude but I don't mind the easy grades. DO take, she'll teach you how to write a proper essay. Don't need to read, just go to class.
Come to class! Her lectures are simple, you just write down everything she says. It's really simple material thats very understandable. For exams, she gives you the questions and you just fill them in yourself and study from that. One essay, one tutorial question, and two exams. She comes off strong at first, but you get used to it. Worth it!
Write down everything she says in lecture. Use the textbook to help elaborate on the exam questions as they can be a bit tricky but the material is straightforward. She appears to be very intimidating but she's always willing to meet up and help you on your essay. Follow her instructions exactly and you'll be good.
AWESOME PROF!!!! She really knows her stuff and is lenient when marking!
She is simply the best Prof at Ryerson. I literally take all her classes because not only I learn something but also her classes are fun times and easy to understand
Train can be intimidating, she doesn't shy away form the sass. Attend all lectures, write everything down. She outlines the entire exam ahead of time. Content is fairly easy for most of her courses. Don't need to read, just go to class.
Her use of humor and ridicule to criticize people's stupidity/vices is commendable. Very witty. Very intelligent. Interesting class.. very relatable. I don't mind the sass. In fact, I prefer it.
she rocks
Must attend class to take notes. Great review for midterm and exam and will walk you through essay, very knowledgeable and passionate, especially about patriarchy.
Kelly Train manages to command a room with nothing but her voice and a piece of chalk. She can come off tough, but she genuinely wants you to do well and gives you all the tools to do so. When I see her name come up on the electives list, I take it!
Pretty straightforward as to what she wants. Reading the textbook isn't necessary but going to class definitely is. Solid choice.
She wants you to learn and succeed. She just may not show it. Class is very lecture based, and you have to write down EVERYTHING she says. For all exams she gives you all the questions prior. For final essay she has a thesis workshop where she fixes your thesis; she has a doc that she made. follow it. She's fair. Participation doesn't matter.
If you cannot handle women who are honest, blunt, unapologetic, empowering, or intelligent.. do not take a class with her. She knows what she's talking about. Be prepared to use sociological sources because she teaches a SOCIOLOGICAL class. Be prepared to hear the truth.
Intimidating at first, but truly a great prof. Tells you exactly what she is looking for. Gives good feedback on the essay. Go to her thesis workshop! It will help you with her paper and with all future papers. Really explains how to write a great thesis. Take notes in class, it is super important!
If you pay attention, take thorough notes during the lectures, and take advantage of the opportunities to ask her questions about the assignments, it is very easy to do well in the course. She'll say things that are outrageous sometimes, but focus on the details and you'll do fine.
Honestly, one of the most impactful profs I have had at Ryerson thus far. A beyond impressive knowledge of the material, and a tough-love kind of teaching style. Super great with giving you the info needed for exams ahead of time, and extremely helpful in her office hours, as well as the thesis writing workshop. Loved every moment of her course.
honestly, this is one of my favourite professors and she made class content so interesting. If her name shows up in your time table do not drop it. Great lectures make sure to show up and take notes because everything she says is useful. Easy marker and very fair.
Kelly train has a lot of mixed reviews. You will either love her or hate her. I personally think she is an amazing professor. Not many and close to no professors are able to command and engage the entire classroom like she is able to. This woman was created to teach, she definitely knows her stuff and teaches without having to read off a powerpoint
You either love Train or hate her. Can be intimidating at first and is very blunt, but you have to respect that she tells it as it is and doesn't sugar coat anything. She literally gives you the questions to the exams.. just show up to class, write down what she says, and you're solid.
Amazing professor! Shes intimidating at first but well worth staying in her class. She will teach you how to write a good essay. Her lectures are super exciting, making even 8 am classes easy to go to. I have specifically picked courses simply because she was teaching them! She should honestly be the prime minister.
Kelly was amazing. Very intimidating even though it was an online class. She clearly outlines what is needed to get a good grade on the paper and was willing to give feedback throughout the writing process. Really cares about students doing well. Def will take again.
Comes across as intimidating, but one of the best professors I've had. There are no powerpoint slides, strictly lecture. Provides clear expectations for paper and is available for feedback. Also review for midterm and final was detailed.
Love, love, love. She's concise, straightforward, and hilarious.
Professor Train is an amazing prof. Took SOC502 with her and ended up taking 2 more classes with her for spring. Midterm/final she basically gives you what is on the exam (multiple choice) and the paper is fairly marked.
This professor must be the best professor I have ever had. She was so great at lecturing and the content was always interesting. Her style of teaching is definitely effective. The tests were fair and easy if you study efficiently. The paper was actually enjoyable to write and was marked fairly as well. this course is so important! Loved it 100%
This was such a great course, and it was great because of this professor! The lectures were always engaging and never ever dull. She keeps it real. Her teaching style is one of a kind and certainly memorable. The material sticks because of the way she teaches which makes it so much more valuable. If you're in nursing, nutrition or sw, take this!
Kelly is one of the best professors I've had so far at Ryerson, She actually wants you to do good and her lectures are very engaging. She has no ppt but you will actually understand what she is talking about, which helps a lot during exam. Also for the exam, She basically gives you your thesis statement.
Amazing professor, not a sociology student but her class is super interesting. She comes off as intimidating on the first class, but when she starts her lectures it's like a new person. Will make you interested in the topic, also super helpful with essays and exams.
Show up to every single class. She will hold your hand through the entire course. She is a feminist and SJW, which is super annoying, but set all that aside and write down her views, as they will be the ONLY correct answers on the test. Also, don't bother arguing her SJW points, she is not open to having her mind changed. Still, a solid choice!
She was quite intimidating but such an amazing professor. What she taught and the way she taught was super interesting and made me eager to go to class. She did not post slides, only lectured for 3 straight hours so attendance was important. Would totally take her class again.
I love Dr. Train. It's been a while since I felt this way about school or a class. I just started her class and she was intimidating at first but right when she started elaborating on her content (which is fascinating and she is obviously very passionate about), I could not stop listening and kept my eyes forward the entire time. She is brilliant.
Kelly Train was one of favourite profs!! She explains the content so well you can almost relate to it. She seems like a tough cookie but she is an easy grader! Did not purchase the textbook and got an A. A Ryerson legend!!!!!!!!!
my third time taking a course with her and I cannot get enough of her lectures. she is seriously amazing at what she does. you either love her or hate her but she engages an entire class room with ease. her midterms and final is SO easy if you go to class and study. definitely one of the most influential professors i have ever had at ryerson
She looks intimidating but she's not, she's nice one-on-one. You need to go to class to pass, she does not use D2L. She is also very knowledgeable about the course concepts. I'm going to for sure take more of her courses in the future.
Kelly Train is a great prof and has a high acumen with the course material. She will keep you engaged and intrigued through all her lessons. She can come off as intimidating at first but as the semester goes on you will learn to appreciate her learning style. She gives you the midterm and final exam questions, so show up and you're solid.
Intimidating at first, but she is one of the best profs I've ever had. Her lectures are spectacular and are very intuitive. She takes attendance at both lecture and tutorials, so you should try to attend every class. No lecture slides, so prepare to listen carefully. She knows the course material well and is available a lot for questions/help.
Kelly Train is a very intimidating professor in front of the class, but once you speak to her 1 on 1, she is very understanding and nice. You must go to class and take notes, she lectures for 2 hours and last hour of class are tutorial presentations. All her classes are easy marks, same layout. One midterm, one final. She gives the #s to the tests.
Dr. Train is a wonderful professor who is meant to teach. She can really command a classroom. Her course evaluations are very fair: 1 midterm, final, essay and tutorial. Key is to go to every lecture and type absolutely everything she says. She gives Qs for exams so you can study beforehand properly. Highly recommend!! (must attend classes though)
I learned more in her class than any other. She has no ppts and just talks, so take down everything, but itll be in your head if you go to class cause its just so interesting. Only thing I didnt like was she was intimidating and unapproachable. But she grades rlly easy on the final essay and exam. Barely had to use the textbook, rlly fun class
Kelly Train is def my favourite professor at Ryerson and its always a joy to be in her classes. Shes very specific in what she says during class, no PPs so take down everything she says - which is easy bc she goes slow. She tells u the exact questions that will be on the exams, and she tells u the exact way she wants the essay to be. Easy A!
I've heard she lightens up after the first few classes but on the first day she literally yelled and complained about how her past students are terrible, i get that it's her sense of humour but like why be so unpleasant and rude on the first day?
She lives what she teaches. First class scares some, but trust it's worth staying. Most students from ANY of her classes leave the course with better written communication and awareness of society. She understands the importance of actually retaining the material learnt in class, so the midterm and exam questions are given beforehand.
Kelly was an amazing prof and I would definitely recommend taking any course you can with her. She is extremely knowledgeable as well as passionate in her teaching. Her exams are all self-made and if you attend every class and give your undivided attention you are guaranteed an A. Amazing class
She is an interesting prof, she doesn't use any of the textbooks so don't buy it. She's definitely very intimidating but a fair (even generous) grader. Her tests are everything spoken about in class, you need good notes or a friend who has good notes. She tells you literally EVERY single question on the exam and goes easy on presentations
Prof Train is an excellent teacher. Really cares about the students, lectures are clear and easy to understand. She does not post anything on D2L so you must attend class for notes (no slides used at all or anything). Lectures are entertaining and she is always available to help you with your assignments. Good grader!
Kelly is extremely approachable and chill. Her lectures are very interesting but remember to attend every lecture as she doesn't post anything online. She provides the exact questions that will be on the midterm and final exam. She can come off intimidating at first but she's actually very caring for her students. Definitely recommend!
this is one of the most inspirational profs I have ever had. Make sure you listen and take notes, the book is really small so you don't really do a lot of reading. she also gives you the test questions to help you prep
taking a class with Kelly Train was the best decision I've made at Ryerson. She is phenomenal. I did not care much about my general electives, but she made it not only interested but I learned a lot! Do not second guess taking her class!
I was super anxious being in her class since I took it for the first time. There's no lecture slides and she doesn't post grades or slides still, online. ATTEND CLASS - if you miss class, you're pretty much ruining your chances to pass the class. I didn't use the textbook and I did very well - surprisingly! Take it, it was taught very well!
The best prof I've ever had!! I have never been so interested or engaged in a class before!!
Professor Train is by far the best prof at Ryerson. She is such an amazing lecturer, and inspires students in class discussions. If you have her as your prof considered yourself blessed.
She's an amazing prof, took two of her classes because I love the way she teaches. She seems very tough but she is a very easy marker. Don't buy any textbooks just show up to class and take notes. She doesn't do power points and she gives her lectures verbally. Everything on her exams are what she says in lectures. Great prof and great classes!!
Kelly Train is easily my favourite professor. She doesn't sugar coat things and shell always be straight up with you. Don't be too intimidated by her and go see her for extra help because she is so helpful. Her lectures don't have slides but she is so passionate you will listen- trust me I have ADHD and I focus so well!
She's hands-down the best professor I've ever had. At first she seemed really intimidating but she wants her students to succeed and it shows. Doesn't have or post PPT slides so you HAVE to show up and take notes to be successful. I was able to fill out 80% of her detailed midterm review from memory alone because she delivers her lectures that well
The BEST professor at Ryerson and one of the few people that have actually taught me something here. I love her. She is so smart, and she will teach you so much. I've taken 4 of her classes because she is that good. She is intimidating at first but once you understand how she works you will so benefit from taking this class.
ive never been 1 to leave a review for a prof but i love kelly sm. by far my fave course taken in my 3 years. she seems scary at first but the way she teaches her lectures is amazing. at first i was worried cause she doesnt post slides but the way she speaks about issues is much more engaging than ppw. goes over midterm/final in detail.
Kelly is amazing! Her lectures are so interesting. I would take her class again 100%. Marks very easy I would say and for the exams she gives all the questions in class!
Not going to lie, she is very intimidating. She posts literally nothing on D2L, so you have to go to class. She takes participation marks every single class. Very generous grader. I liked her, but I felt as though she tried to make her students agree with her opinions a bit too much.
She is great teacher! Not a hard marker as long as you follow her rules. Class is mandatory, she uses her lectures to create test/exam. Textbook not needed. Would definitely take her class again!
Her courses are solely based on her lectures each week so if you go to class and take notes, you will do well. She's a little intimidating, but she's clear and honest, and gets right to the point. Easy grader too.
I took this class in my first year and have waited until my third year now so I could take her again. Most interesting and informational class ever, she's blunt, to the point, and real. Not a class you can miss but she generally grades generously.
will give you the midterm and final exam questions. easy participation and marks very easy on essays.
Go to class! Take good notes! Essay was fairly easily marked but did have to put in a little bit of work. Midterm and final exam were practically word to word questions from notes in class. Did not use textbook at all except a little for the essay. Could probably find it online somewhere.
Kelly is an amazing professor. She came off as rather intimidating at first. Shes very understanding and gives the questions to both midterm and finals. Easy paper and marker!! I am willing to take her Violence in the Family class!! Shes a gem!!
Although she seems tough and intimidating at first, she is an incredibly great prof. Lectures are very interesting but keep in mind she does not use powerpoints so you really need to be in class. Marks incredibly fair. Exams are very transparent and she gives you all the info you need to know to ace it!
She gives you excellent exam reviews. if you're big on class participation this is the perfect place to get an A. She's a very strong hearted professor and she will give you the business. if you show up and participate you do not need to rely on your reading so heavily. overall I've taken her multiple times and would recommend her to any classmate
Hard marker.
you never want to miss a performance of Dr. Train in sociology or Dr. Kam in economics. I took them both and never missed a lecture. Love the passion and the applicability to the real world of both subjects. Awesome Rye profs.
Kelly Train was an amazing professor. She is very passionate about what she is talking about, which may seem a little intimidating. However, she is a pretty easy marker and you'll definitely do well if you attend every class. Highly recommend.
I've taken a lot of classes at Ryerson, I must say she is one of my favourites. Fired with passion, absolutely caring, and lectures are just never boring. Solid 10/10 would recommend. Enjoy
Her exams were extremely confusing. The multiple choice questions always appeared to be written in a 'trick' format. Multiple answers would be completely correct, and it was impossible to know which she wanted since all of them were legitimately applicable. This made it difficult to do well.
One of the best profs I've had at Ryerson. Her first class is always used to scare people, she states that University is competitive, etc. After the first class, if you have the chance to get to know her, she is compassionate about her students/teaching. An easy grader, all her exams are multiple-choice. Attend class and you'll do fine!
So intimidating at first, you will feel nervous first class with her!... If you stick with it you will end up LOVING her. Best professor I had at Ryerson, took 5 courses with her. If you attend her lectures and ask her questions, she will help you with everything. She's also hilarious which makes her lectures AMAZING! You will never forget her!
Her bark is much worse than her bite. She's actually very kind and cares a lot about her students. She just wants us to do well so she pushes us. Gives excellent, thorough feedback. Not a hard marker. Definitely recommend.
Dr. Train is a wonderful, knowledgeable, intelligent, fantastic analyst and supportive professor who knows how to teach and how to engage students. I wish I have her for all my courses at Ryerson. She knows and understands cultural sensitivities, and I do not have enough valuable words to describe her great personality.
Extremely unprofessional. Often makes extreme statements with no factual basis and then pretends she didnt say them when called out
worst prof, pdf lecture notes, no zoom lecture, midterm/exam were confusing af questions were misleading she gave proposal feedback for a major essay SUPER LATE and didn't give an extension, as if we don't have extra coursework cuz online classes, not understanding of students situations, 10/10 wouldn't recommend
Not very understanding of students and specific accommodation that they have. Very rude and blunt when emailing with them. No lecture, just very long pdf files that you must sift through. The midterm exam was very confusing and had a lot of trick questions.I would say that this professor doesn't care about the student and what they need to succeed.
There are no lectures and it's hard to follow her material just through PDF documents. She is extremely harsh on her specifications on papers (ex: SOCIOLOGICAL articles ONLY otherwise A FAIL on a 25% assignment). Her attitude may demotivate students about a subject that they are passionate about. Avoid enrolling in her Class if possible.
This professor is a little bit rude in her emails. I asked to see where I went wrong in an assignment and she declined and suggested I moved onto and shift my focus on the next midterm/assignment. I understand she grades many papers/midterms but its mainly in the way she communicates it. Her modules are interesting and not too long.. but...
I feel like I got catfished by all these positive reviews. She definitely changed up after covid, not an easy course.
her midterms/exams are worded poorly and HIGHLY confusing. She is hard to reach outside of class. Makes you work for marks - especially with the final essay.
The only reason there is negative reviews is because of classes being online (don't let that discourage you). I had her last year and is the best prof ever. Her lectures are extremely informative and her "tough love" teaching style is only to get you prepared for Uni. If you sit and talk with her after class you'll realize how amazing she is!
This professor changed my life. I used to be a business major and I actually ended up switching into Sociology because of her. She's an incredible lecturer, I've even invited some of my friends to classes with her and they said the same. Take her, she'll change your life!! Seriously the best prof I've ever had.
This class is literally just reading a text book, a weekly PDF and then doing exams filled with trick questions. This class is set up to fail students. I highly don't recommend taking this class.
Professor Train was decent, during this pandemic she has been extremely generous with marking. Although her feedback is terrifying, since she criticizes hardcore, you won't fail this course. It was an asynchronous class, so no zoom lectures. Just be ready to read a ton and try to participate in discussions a lot!
If you have a chance to take a SOC class with Kelly, do it! I've had her as a prof pre covid and during covid, and I would say she marks generously. Her course work is very structured and organized. Also, you don't need to reply to a peer for discussion posts and doesn't expect lengthy posts either.
She drops a pdf of 25 pages or so a week. Exam is 50 multiple choice questions, a large percentage of them are trick questions. Which implies shes purposely making it unnecessarily difficult.
Her exams set up students for failure. It seems like she changed her exams after covid. I would not take any reviews prior to 2020 seriously. Avoid or say goodbye to your GPA.
Kelly is a problematic prof. She's extremely rude when giving feedback on proposals. She makes her tests super hard and tricky on purpose. I made extensive textbook and module notes to prep for the final but still ended up with a way lower grade than I'd hoped for. She grades easy on the essay and proposal but thats not enough. Simply NO <3
I've taken 5 SOC courses at Ryerson and her exams were the hardest and trickiest ever. 0/10 do not recommend her class. Her exams set you up for failure.
The entire course consisted of long, boring, written out PDF lectures. She was very inaccessible for help and assistance, the only communication she offered was answering questions on the public D2L discussion board. Her essay proposal feedback was late, rude and condescending. She often exaggerates certain social concepts and makes bizarre claims
Oh, man. Her midterm and final exam were completely unfair as they were all trick questions. I knew the content like the back of my hand and still did poorly on the exam bc of the poorly worded questions. She is very kind and gave good essay feedback but for the sake of your gpa avoid this proff.
Can't stress enough to AVOID this prof. Kelly made the midterm & especially the final IMPOSSIBLE to do well on. She purposely put MANY trick questions within exams as she "marked lenient" on the essay. This is not fair to ANY student as no one received a fair mark based on the effort put in. For the sake of your GPA, please take something else!!!!!
I took this profs course in summer school in-person last year and she wasn't that bad. I took 3 courses with her this semester and she suddenly made all the midterms and final exams hard. She claims that she was very genuine when marking the proposal and essay but that is not a reason to make the exam difficult and set your students out to fail.
If you want a course that is completely online with minimal communication with the class or professor take this course. Dr. train is hard to reach as she is not fond of email, you will find out later in the term. Her lecture notes will have grammatical errors as well. Get ready to work hard in her class to finish her paper. Is sympathetic though
Professor Train provided clear guidelines for the essay and exams. Very gracious with her marking but was very against direct content with her unless it was a personal question, no office hours available either. Interesting content but the "lessons" were just summaries of that weeks readings. Seems like a good prof just uncomfortable with tech.
Honestly I was nervous about this prof at first especially because the final paper for this course was long and the instructions provided had more of what NOT to do than what to do. But if you follow her instructions youll come out with a solid grade! She was explicit about how generous she was with marking and it shows.
Her class was okay. It was asynchronous so i never attended any lectures with her but assignments were straight forward. Essay is clear but weakly discussions are annoying. There was a text book but it was not used much
Course was asynchronous with weekly discussion posts. The Naiman textbook Isn't necessary unless you want it for review as she summarized each chapter weekly. We had to post an essay proposal as a public discussion post and her feedback was public as well. I found this a little extra
This prof was a real gem! She is very generous and caring and wants you to succeed. There was a midterm and a final exam. The exams were straight forward and easy. There was also an essay and a proposal. She was very generous on those though and gave high grades. There was also 15% participation, just follow the guidelines and you will get it!
exams were made to bring down marks. those who studied days in advance still did poorly. This is your only warning... Getting into grad school will be harder if you take this course. Take soc808
Dr. Train was very intimidating at first as she does not want you to email her LOL but she'll help you if you need it and she is a very easy marker. Requires you to buy a textbook but I did not read mine and still managed to do well. Overall a good prof, just read her slides and make notes :D
If grad school/good grades are your goal dont take this class. Her tests will bring you down. She marks pretty good on the essays.
I have had Kelly twice. In person she was fine, but her online course was twice as difficult. She marks easily on the essay (I got 90s), but the exam questions genuinely don't make sense. She words them in a way where all answers are extremely similar and confusing. I am a 90s student and got a 60 and 72 on her midterm and final. Be careful
Professor Train deals in absolutes. If you deviate from her assignment outlines at all you are completely wrong. Her feedback is harsh and public (meaning she shares what she thinks about your proposals with the whole class online) DO NOT ENROLL.
Probably the worst prof i've had so far. she marks so hard and has a no email policy so it is really hard to get clarification. the actual work she administers is not difficult yet she marks reallyyyy hard and is not very accommodating.
Prof. Train puts no effort into the class. She never hosted a lecture and forced her students to read a document with notes as their weekly "lecture". Impossible to get in touch with her due to her no email policy. Her grading was unreasonable. Always rude when giving feedback to students. Pushed her opinion on everyone. Incapable of understanding.
Amazing professor! Initially intimidating, but she gives interesting and detailed lectures. I loved her online format because it was straightforward. Not too many assignments and as long as you follow her very specific instructions, you will do well on the project! Great feedback for proposals, including giving me sources and authors I could use.
This Prof puts no effort into her class. She has a no email policy during online school. She expects everything to be put on the discussion post for the entire class to see. Forces her opinions on you. Rude when giving feedback and extremely picky about everything you say. The midterm was basically impossible.
Professor Train is very knowledgeable about what she teaches. Students may think she's a bit harsh with feedback, but overall she gives good advice and genuinely cares about student's success in the course. If you show that you're interested and actually try in the course, she will recognize your efforts and give you a good grade.
This is the second class that Ive taken with her and honestly as long as you follow her instructions youll finish with a strong A! She tells you exactly how she wants things structured and even gives great feedback on the essay proposal. Shes one of the few profs I know that dont have ambiguous assignment instructions
Just uploaded a 12 page document of her speakers notes every week as the 'modules.' Gave a thorough outline for the paper but was very rude about public class feedback. A lot of her points are unfounded and are clearly just her opinion. If you give her what she wants you'll get a good grade, but you might have to compromise your personal beliefs.
This is the first class I have taken with Dr. Train. Despite her lectures just being essentially a script, this format didn't bother me as much as I'd thought. She gives great feedback on essay proposals and provides useful tips. She clearly has strong stances on societal issues, however, I enjoyed learning under a feminist lens. Would take again!
Class was asynchronous just had to look at the module notes and write a very short and easy discussion post. We had two exams, a paper and the discussion posts. Her exams are hard but she provides a review. She tells you exactly how she wants you to write your paper and you can learn a lot. Not an easy A but the asynchronous factor is great.
She expects you to work but if you do the work you'll do fine. I know some people think what she says is only her opinion, but if you do the readings and pay attention you might realize that what she says is backed up with research and is actually true.
Kelly is quite the character and the most impactful professor I had during my time at Ryerson. She says it like it is, and can be extremely blunt. This course was completely unrelated to my degree and pushed me outside of my comfort zone. Take any class with her and you won't regret it!
Kelly Train is the best prof I've ever had. The way she lectures and presents information clear cut and to the point. If you fail her exam its because you didn't try. She properly teaches how to write a thesis statement. Her information and class is so organized I genuinely don't know how anyone could complain. She sets everyone up for success.
Professor Train's exam are an actual joke, its all multiple choice and just a total head bus. She'll give you answers A, B, C, then D which will be A+B+C put together and then E will be "all of the above". Completely messes with your head, her course structure was ok, she posts everything at once, totally async. And you only have to do one paper.
WORST EXAMS EVER IF YOU RESPECT YOURSELF DONT TAKE HER CLASS, HER EXAMS WILL HAVE YOU RIP YOUR HAIR OUT
I have had Kelly both in person and online. Nothing beats her in-person lectures however, her online work is easy to succeed in as long as you put in work. The lack of studying I did for her midterm resulted in a 68. BUT, I read the lectures and made notes for the final and got a 90. Your success in her class is a direct reflection YOUR willingness
She clearly outlines how you can succeed in her course. Onus is on you to put in work. If you are unsatisfied with your grade then you did not put in effort. Kelly is a great prof both online and in person. In regards to the text book, waste of money. Her lecture notes outline everything you need to know in a more interesting fashion
Professor Train was very intimidating at first, I thought I was going to do really bad because she has strict guidelines on how she likes things done, especially with the research paper. I ended up doing really well so honestly don't get scared by the way she phrases her assignment structures.
Take SOC608 if you REALLY like women's studies. This is not an easy course and Professor Train makes sure of that. Beware of the exams. They have trick questions that are designed to make you fail. Studying hard does not mean you'll get a good grade. She is also not easily accessible and can be difficult and sometimes rude in her responses.
I have not seen or heard her this entire semester solely because its a self-taught course, meaning there is no live lectures. She gives you the readings and its your responsibility to do them so really the onus falls on you in how well you do. She is, however, generous with her grading; so long as you follow her instructions, you'll be fine.
Completely self-taught, no live lectures so if you ain't about that, then this ain't the class for you and that's ok. If you do end up taking it, just follow her instructions and do the work and you'll do well.
It's entirely online, don't get in contact with her much and because of that, she does seem intimidating. but her lectures notes and assignment criteria are VERY in-depth and straight forward - following them is easy to do and ensures a good mark. She knows her stuff and is straight forward, it's appreciative with this no nonsense idea. I rate her.
This course is completely self-taught. If you read her lecture notes and follow her essay instructions, you will do well in this course. The course is composed of 1 midterm, 1 final, 1 essay and a weekly discussion board. Overall, it is a pretty easy course if you follow everything she had given.
This course is a good introduction to equity and diversity but can be a bit dry if you're already familiar with certain topics/concepts. She provides detailed feedback in your essay proposals on how to improve your essays (feedback can be a bit daunting but it's helpful!). Make sure you do your weekly discussion posts
honestly i'm confused by the good ratings. maybe its because i had her strictly online. you teach this course to yourself, she only posts google docs with notes. SHE HAS A NO EMAIL POLICY which is not very fair. EXAMS AND TESTS ARE EXTREMELY HARD AND UNFAIR. the only good thing is that although she expects too much from assignments, she marks easy.
Textbook is not required for this course. Reading her lecture documents are enough. No lectures, office hours, sending email to her (unless it's for a personal reason). Exams were difficult, exam review provided was useless (it included pretty much everything); however graded the assignments easy.
No lectures - just her jot notes on a PDF. However, her notes are enough to do the tests. Her essay grading is SUPER lenient and she is extremely generous. Her tests are M/C but they are worded so stupid that it is easy to do bad. I wouldn't take her class again due to her tests, as I understood the concepts but her M/C options were confusing.
This class was asynchronous. Lectures are posted as PDFs. READ THE TEXTBOOK because her exams are based off it. 2 exams, 1 paper, Weekly discussion posts, dont have to respond to others. She gives good critical feedback, can be a bit harsh but dont take it to heart.
Train is one of the most lenient profs I've ever had. While her 'lectures' are just PDF notes, they are very well written and clear. She is also happy to clarify questions regarding the course material. Her tests and assignments are easy. If you study you will do well. She is an easy marker and is lenient w extensions
Participation marks are easy to get and gives you all the course material at the same time, letting you go at your own pace. The research paper is complicated and confusing. Mid term exam is based off of pdf lecture notes and final exam is based off of textbook. Teacher needs to be more straightforward when giving instructions for exams and essays.
I did enjoy the content of this class but the midterm and final exam were really hard to answer. The multiple-choice she made was very confusing. Also, we need to get an essay topic approval from her and she responded very slow ( took a month). I would say that this is not an easy one. JUST DON'T TAKE IT if you don't want to suffer.
The format of this course is a self-taught course. Therefore you need to read over lecture notes and study for the exams. Her exams (mid-term and final) are super tough and tricky. For her exam, all answers seem correct, and you will need to choose which option is the most accurate answer. However, she graded easy for paper.
this was an asynchronous course so she posted pdfs of her lectures. you need to do weekly discussions, an essay proposal, an essay, midterm and final exam. Her exams are tricky so make sure to read questions carefully, her feedback can be harsh but it helps out a lot, trust me I have anxiety, VERY LENIENT MARKER
copy and pastes identical feedback to multiple students, doesnt post any lecture videos, nor does she ever have live classes. when she does provide feedback it is critical but fair, she is a very easy marker specifically with essays and she is quite accommodating!
Kelly is great. Many people here like to complain, but heres a shockerif you study and put in effort, her class is an easy A. If you know her test material very well, you will do great. Her leniency in marking final papers and proposals boosts your mark significantly. If you do bad in kellys class then you only have yourself to blame
Kelly Trains a rude professor who literally told us not to email her on the first day of class. However, her class is easy af, do the participation modules and the essay along with the exam and you'll pass pretty easily.
There isn't much to say about Kelly, as her course for me was entirely asynchronous and there is barely any contact with her whatsoever. Her assignments are easy peasy, but the exams... weird. The questions are oddly worded and it's almost like they're designed to confuse you. Carefully read them and study study study...
Professor Train is an amazing prof. Ive had her for both in person and online courses. Her in person lectures are inspirational. Online she provides all her lecture notes and a full review of the exams. Her feedback is clear and precise. She responds to emails and discussion forum postings within hours, sometimes even minutes. BEST prof ever!!!
Have had this professor before and online format of class was the exact same. Content of class felt more like history than a sociology credit, as they intersect at times, but still enjoyed the content. Professor does not have live lectures and will not schedule meetings with students. Essay is straightforward. Midterm and final were difficult.
Kelly Train did not host any zoom meetings in favor of just posting her 12-page lecture notes every week along with a discussion post. The essay was really nice, however, the exams are something else... Questions are worded weirdly and very confusing. However, you'll get a good mark if you do well on the essay and participate.
Youre fine. Take her test when you are ready and make sure you know the material. She literally tells you what to know for the exams and marks essays very generously. She is tough with exams to ensure nobody cheats, basically just study
If you want an easy, breezy course that is stress-free, definitely go for any of this Professor's classes. I really don't have anything bad to say, but if you're someone who's a visual and likes the aspects of PowerPoints/1-on-1 communication with the prof... this class may not suit you. However, the content and work is straight to the point!
For the first half of the semester, all async. 12-page documents. Does give an outline of what's on the exams but everything is worded so poorly and confusingly, and it felt that there were things completely different from what she said would be on the exam.
Train was a great prof! Her reviews are very mixed and its mainly for this reason, her teaching style/ delivery mode. If you want in-person lectures, 1v1 prof time, this is not the class for you. Her lectures are all pdf forms. Her quizzes include material from the textbook and lecture. She marks easy on essays, but does not answer emails.
as someone who's experienced Dr Train in person and online, she's not what these reviews make her out to be. yes her online pdf format is a bit dry, but her marking is beyond fair and generous. her in person lectures are so engaging, you will be on the edge of your seat. she loves what she talks about, and makes topics intresting. 10/10 reccomend.
She teaches from a very personal standpoint and doesn't remove herself from the actual theory to give a "unbiased" account of the content. The feminist content was her beating down on men describing them with no redeeming quality. Women are always the victim.
She's a good prof, but doesn't communicate much. If you need an extension for your essays, she'll give them to you no questions asked. just make sure you do the discussion posts in time, do good on the only 2 tests in the course and write a coherent essay and you're fine.
5 stars for my last rating below oopsss
This course, like many other soc courses is extremely liberal, very HIGH emphasis on feminism. She will give you an extension no questions asked--even if the extension request is last minute. VERY generous marker for essays. Midterm and final were fair. As long as your discussion posts are on time, you will get the credit for them.
Dr.Train was not present throughout the semester as she made the course asynchronous. Her exams were brutal but her essay grading was quite easy and allowed me to do well in her course. She would have weekly participation and that would allow you to familiarize yourself with course content. Possible to do well but I would stay way from her.
Honestly, I understand why everyone is complaing, but she isn't that bad. SUPER EASY marker when it comes to essays. Her exams were the epitome of evil, like i honestly didn't understand what half the questions meant, but the essay grade saved me. shes honestly a bad prof., but it wasnt a horrible class. i dont reccomend her tho.
She doesn't mark attendance, but because her lectures are heavy, if you don't go you simply won't learn in the class. Her lectures are a lot for a 2-hour time frame but she's really straightforward (so make sure you can type fast). The midterm and final were a bit difficult, but she's a very lenient marker toward assignments and discussion posts.
Dr. Train seemed to put herself on a pedestal throughout the semester. More than once she stated how "extremely and overgenerous" she was in her marking, making it seem as though we should thank her for her mercy. This course is listed as a PR elective, but it felt like a degree requirement course considering her standards and expectations.
Dr. Kelly Train is so sweet. She tried her best to get her students to succeed. Her MT and Final are all MCQs. They are pretty straightforward if you read the lecture notes. There is a research paper in this course, but Dr. Train helps you from "head to toes". Her feedback is important and will help you to learn for writing future papers.
Midterm and exam was online, and boy, was it confusing. The wording was tricky. However, the essay worth 30% saved me, she marked super leniently. Participation worth 15% was very easy to achieve, just a weekly discussion post. In person she talks really a lot, so make friends in class to share notes. Overall, I would take again!
Based on her instructions, she seems so intimidating, she is actually very kind and understanding professor. If you ask for an extension, she will give it no problem. She marks easy on the essay. Her exams are bit hard because the way she frames her questions, it is not easy to guess, Basically study for the exams and go through review questions.
At first reading the course outline I was intimidated since she had a lot of instructions and guidelines. However, her criteria is very straight forward and for the essay proposal she gave everyone clear feedback which produced great essay results for our class. Overall, really enjoyable class and I hope to have professor Train again in the future!
Lenient marker for the single essay and gives extensive feedback for the essay proposal. Do all of the discussion board posts and its an easy 15%. The test and exam however were the most difficult online multiple choice ones I have ever experienced. Very vague and confusing wording, study all the material given!
Kelly Train is the reason why I love Sociology. Beware she does not use PowerPoints. Everything she says will be on the exam
i really like professor train! i know some people have said that she speaks very fast in lectures but i actually kind of prefer that. it is a little difficult to not have slides but i've managed so it's not too bad. she's really helpful and i genuinely always enjoy her classes. i'd definitely take another one of her sociology classes!
Dr. Train is extremely knowledgeable and gives very useful feedback on assignments. She has been my favourite professor this semester. I highly recommend taking a class with Dr. Train.
She's an easy marker and apparently doesn't use turnitin to mark her papers (that's what I heard her say in class). She tore my proposal to shreds (in a nice way... I think), but proceeded to give me an 80% anyway? I like her. As long as you do your readings for the module and have notes of what she's talking about, don't even stress.
The only problem with her is that her exams don't match up with the readings or lectures and they're worded so weird that it's borderline impossible to do extremely well on them. She does mark easy on the essay, and proposal so you can still pass the class with high marks, but don't bother studying too hard for the exams
There is nothing wrong with her lectures in general and she is a good professor. My only issue is if you miss a class, good luck trying to get notes on it. She only provides an outline for each class and you're supposed to take notes on all the information she talks about under each section.
Professor Train may seem intimidating at first, but she is kind and willing to help you out. She grades easily for the essay proposal and the essay itself the exams are tricky to understand because they are worded weirdly. The downside is that you have to attend the lectures as she just talks about the content.
When you first meet Train, you will not like her, you will be intimidated and think her class will suck. I did, it ended up being my favourite class. I will always value a prof who is straightforward with clear guidelines, instead of two face sweet prof's who are vague in expectations and very hard markers. The only thing challenging was the exams.
Kelly gives away free marks lmao, don't me wrong, you still have to put in effort but she is super lenient in essay marking. Want an extension? You got it. Her lectures are engaging and you actually learn about interesting events/content. Just make sure to keep up with readings and actually study cuz her exams are quite tricky.
Pros: Easy marker, great feedback, clear marking scheme of what she expects from you, Gives extra time if needed for discussion questions/essay, content is enlightening af, teaching style forces you to pay attention/memorize easier. Cons: She doesn't post slides so you cant miss class, you also have to type so fast, her exams were challenging too.
Professor Train was honestly one of my favourite professors this semester! She doesn't use/post powerpoints or any visual components, so if you miss class you're kind of screwed. Prepare to type a lot. She still somehow manages to make the content very interesting! Easy marker but gives great (harsh) feedback! Would definitely take her again.
Train is AMAZING. she is extremely flexible and considerate. She gives out extensions no matter the reason and truly cares about what she teaches and wants to make sure her students learn the material properly. People hate her for being blunt but she only speaks the truth. LOVE HER SM I'd take her class again!!!!
Kelly is an easy marker but the only flaw is that she doesn't provide any power point presentations, so if you don't have notes from AAS then you are screwed.
Very engaging lectures, slides would be nice. A little too nice abt extensions, not really fair to others that worked really hard to meet the deadline imo. do the discussions posts pls. SO GENEROUS W MARKING FOR THE ESSAY. u will do well if if u have 1/2 a brain cell. exams are smth else, but fair considering they r online. I liked her, she's funny
She's very engaging but also opinionated and firm in her beliefs and opinions. She doesn't use visuals and talks relatively fast. Her feedback is borderline mean but very helpful. She will give extensions no questions asked and her marking is very generous. Her exams are very confusing and many appear to have more than one right answer.
Great prof. Lenient in the essay marking and lenient in extensions, except the exams are pretty tricky. Only annoying part is that she does not post slides, so you have to show up to the lectures, or you will have nothing to study for the exam. I think the best part of her class is that she gives harsh advice, but it will help shape your skills.
Had her twice. She is literally the reason why i love sociology. Since she doesn't post slides, we have to go to class and write down whatever she says. And honestly i learn more this way. Exams are easy, just don't over think
Honestly, I don't really stress when it comes to this class. The only thing I wish she would add was at least a visual aid or provide notes since all she does is talk during her lectures. Also, her exams are a bit trippy... especially with how they're worded. Aside from that though she's super lenient and I would take her again since it's light
Inspiring lectures and quizzes for midterm and exam that come word for word from lectures/textbook.
I did not have a good first impression with her, but then she turned to be one of my favourite profs! Very lenient with essay marking/ extensions and gives you free mark at the end of the semester if you do your discussion posts. However, her midterms and exams were extremely difficult IMO so make sure you study and read the textbook
gives note outlines, no slides, and only talks material. lenient grader if your work shows effort. gives excellent feedback, clearly knowledgeable in her field. test questions are vague and rather confusing (make sure you study!). other than that she's great! shes seems tough but deep down she cares as long as you put in effort in her classes.
She was an absolute joy to learn from and by far the best class experience I got as an introduction to university. Attendance is mandatory as she does not post notes online and exams are textbook heavy!! Her grading is extremely fair and gives room for students to be creative unlike most profs I've had. Whoever has her classes is extremely lucky.
The exam was fairly straight forward and if you prepare well for it you'll likely get a good grade. The discussion posts are an easy way to raise your grades, if you do them, you'll get the marks. The essay proposal she was pretty tough with people-her responses came off pretty harsh, however they were helpful and led me to do well on the essay.
lectures were interesting/engaging for SOC 111. good lecturer, talks slow. 2 exams, 1 essay, and the other % goes to discussion posts. Essay was easy because she makes you do an essay proposal and gives feedback- as long as you understand her feedback and apply it properly, you will be able to write a good essay.
Didn't have a food first impression of her, but loved her near the end. At first she may come off as a very strict teacher, but she is actually understanding and really nice. Do discussion posts for free marks and marks essay pretty lenient. However, midterm and final exam felt impossible no matter how much you study as it is very wordy
Though she doesn't use slideshows, her lectures will make you want to pay attention and understand. A very generous marker and hands out extensions easily. She can be intimidating at first, but she really does care about her students and ensures each of us does well in her course.
Kelly Train is honestly one of the best profs I've had so far. She KNOWS her stuff and keeps the class engaged and alive through random aggressive jokes (actually so funny) and interesting facts alongside course content. She may seem intimidating at first, but that's just how she is. Such a great prof and I would definitely take her again!
To sum it up, this woman is crazy! I dropped from the first class because she accused all psychologists of being racist, sexist homophobes dedicated to holding up the patriarchy. I won't stay in a class where I'm going to be bullied because of my academic field. Despite thinking she's better than psychologists she clearly can't see her own complexes
She's not the best professor out there because like the other reviews, her lectures are very biased and strongly opinionated but you get good grades if you write the essay based on her opinion. So, if you want to do it for the grades, just go to every class (she doesn't post lecture notes), and write the essay towards her opinion and you'll do good
Horrible prof, no information is provided on d2l, you just attend class and pray you get all the information required for exams. Information is not linear, always jumps all over the place.
I find her blunt demeanour very refreshing. Her lectures leave a lasting impression, and her template on writing an essay I applied to two other courses I was taking at the time and received a 98% and a 95% on those essays, and on the essay for this course received a 90%. Super generous marker too!
Because of the word limit, I'm going to list some things she did on the first day -She was 30 minutes late and didn't even acknowledge it -She talked poorly of other profs and, -about high school teachers and their lack of ability to write -The uni doesn't give a crap about the teacher's ability to teach -Profs don't have time to read our emails
Kelly Train is an amazing prof. I've taken a lot of her classes at Toronto Metropolitan University and I am always learning something new. She is also very understanding and inspirational as a woman within academia. She lets you explore topics and interests that appeal to you as an individual within imposing her own biases.
SHE DOESNT POST SLIDES SHE JUST LECTURES
Overall Kelly comes off as scary but she is a great professor and her content is really clear. Her marking on the essay is very lenient. Just show up to every lecture because she does not post the slides. She comes as hostile and her teaching style may not be for everyone but I enjoyed the class!
Whoever is disliking all of Train's good ratings must have had some personal beef with her. Honestly, she's a good prof. Fair marker, lecture-heavy, straight to the point and helpful. There were times when I was close to falling asleep in the class, but you just gotta power through. I would take a course with her again. Feedback was really helpful.
You have to attend lectures. There are weekly discussion posts which are straightforward. The exams were a bit difficult but fair. She grades the essay very easily if you follow her instructions. This was not a difficult course if you get everything done and it's not difficult to get an A. I'd recommend this prof!!!
This class wasn't difficult but attendance was required to pass. Train does not post lectures, just an outline of what she will be talking about. As long as you take good notes you'll be just fine. The exam and midterm weren't too hard, I got above 70% on both. The essay proposal was brutal and she's super rude, I got an 80% but a 93 on the final.
Professor Train continues to be one of my favourite Sociology profs at TMU. Her grading criteria is very straightforward, and she really wants her students to succeed when writing essays. I recommend taking this prof whenever you get the chance. It is not difficult to do well in this course as long as you pay attention to the weekly readings!
I enjoyed her lectures when I attended them. She seems to be supportive of her students and I never had any issues with her.
Enjoyed her class- she is a very understanding and has compassion for her students. I also enjoyed the structure of her course, its to the point and everything is clearly outlined. I wish more professors would follow her style of teaching.
what an amazing prof! i have taken two classes with Prof Train, and both have been amazing.
Kelly Train is one of the kindest, most intelligent, and insightful professors I have crossed paths with. She will push you harder than you knew you were capable of, and turn you into a brilliant writer, strategist, and thinker. Her assignments are straightforward and contain clear instructions. I encourage you to take any of her classes.
She is an amazing prof! Her lectures are easy to understand, but you have to be there and listen to take notes, as she doesn't use slides. She seems intimidating, but is nice to talk to if you have a question. She is very accommodating of extensions. Her feedback is detailed and marking is lenient. The wording on her exams are confusing though.
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE WITH KELLY! I'm not sure who's writing the reviews for this teacher but they are insanely incorrect. For starters, Kelly cannot go more than 2 sentences without cursing or using some type of foul language. This is easily the worst class I've ever taken and the WORST teaching style I've ever receive from a teacher in my life
Started the beginning of the semester very excited and empowered by Professor Train. As the semester progressed I had reached out to Professor Train for advice on an essay, and after telling her my major she proceeded to laugh in my face and insult my program (in front of other students as well).
Kelly Train is amazing. Her class is interesting and engaging and she is great at challenging her students without making things overly difficult. No lecture slides, but she talks slow enough that you can get everything down. I will be taking as many classes of hers as I can!
Professor Train is one of my favourites of all time. Her classes are engaging, fast-paced and well-organized. She wastes no time in lecture, structures her course very well, gives thorough feedback for assignments and is a joy to learn from. Be prepared to take good notes as she doesn't post slides, textbook seems supplementary to lecture content.
Almost got me indirectly killed due to her lectures going on after the alloted time. Made me miss my bus and the next bus I took got hit by a car on the highway. She wouldn't need the extra time if she stopped coming to class consistently 20 to 30 mins late. Otherwise, great prof. Interesting lectures, great feedback on assignments.
The professor is very unprofessional when it comes to giving feedback. They will make personal remarks against you in feedback, and be very aggressive in their writing. The professor does not make a classroom a learning environment, often scolding writings that they do not personally understand or agree with. I do not recommend this professor.
She doesn't use lecture slides, so you need to go to class. Her lectures are very informative and entertaining. She really wants you to succeed, so she provides a few things that are graded easily. She is very lenient in marking the final paper. Her exams are hard. All answers seem right and wrong at the same time. Don't recommend because of that.
Consistently shows up 30 minutes late to a 1-hour class with zero explanation. No slides, no lecture notes. Unnecessarily confusing exams. Rude. Unapproachable. Literally the worst. She should not be an educator as she clearly does not like her students at all. Just please avoid her, my goodness.
This professor comes off very passive aggressive in her feedback. Seems to have a very streamlined perspective on what is correct and does not take any ideas that may go against her own thought process very well. Also, the exams she writes are written in a way that makes the questions hard to understand, and she gives a lot of trick answers. Avoid.
In the beginning of the semester I was not sure how I felt about Dr. Train. She does not have slide to refer back to and in order to understand the class you have to attend all lectures. Although she is a fair marker and made concepts easy to understand. I definitely recommend class!
Dr. Train is wonderful. Yes, she doesn't provide lecture slides. However, when she teaches, she speaks slowly and clearly and asks everyone if they have any questions/understand the content after every topic. I think she has a great sense of humour and she's passionate about feminist issues (which is crucial when taking a gender studies course)
Not a feminist but this is the only university class where I have actually learned something. No she doesn't post slides, but her lectures are entertaining and interesting and forces you to listen, take notes, and actually learn. She is a great marker when it comes to the final essay and also provides other assessments for super easy marks.
I've taken 3 differnet classes with her. She's great. Lectures are never boring, but you MUST take notes since she rarely uses slides, and you have to attend every class. She's blunt, but I liked her straightfoward approach to teaching. She's a very easy marker as long as you know what she's looking for.
Professor Train is amazing. Lectures are heavy but she is very straightforward and easy to understand. Hope I get more classes with her.
I had a good semester with this professor during my social work degree. Her lectures were a bit repetitive so I was able to pass all my exams without having to go to classes. She assigns a bit of reading but you should be fine as long as you do the readings and borrow notes from friends. She's an easy marker and her exams were also straightforward.
Kelly Train is a great professor. Lectures involve her talking without the use of slides, so be prepared to take notes. She is an incredibly fair marker. As long as you follow her rubrics and guidelines, keep up with discussion posts, and do what she asks, you are guaranteed to get a good mark in this class.
This is my second time taking Kelly Train. There are no powerpoints, but because you are forced to take notes, her material really sticks with you. Her classes have been one of the few I actually learn from and look forward to going to. She is extremely generous and understanding when it comes to marking and assignments. I am def taking her again.
Prof Train wants you to succeed: generous extensions, gives an easy online participation mark, provides very detailed assignment expectations & comprehensive review questions for exams. Her lectures are detailed, wryly humorous, and are accompanied by a brief lecture outline (no slides). Feedback is blunt but constructive. Tests are MC and online.
Amazing professor, loved all of Kelly's classes
She's a soft marker despite how intimidating she comes across. The exams caused me pain. Every question was so convoluted and many did not apply to course material. She also seems to be very stuck in her beliefs which I don't love. She spends a lot of time hating on scientific disciplines or really any viewpoint that differs from her own.
She told me to drop the class because I needed help on an assignment. Never met a ruder professor.
Honesty, I was shocked at the lack of objectivity in the things she was teaching about society. She had very cemented beliefs and I could feel many being offended by her blunt standpoints being presented as "THE right way of thinking." However, her expectations of students were very minimal and she made this course super interesting.
Receiving a grade back from professor train is like seeing a bowl of free candy on a porch during halloween
Kelly Train is a professor that really proves that first impressions can be deceiving. At first, she seems really intimidating and stuck in her views. However, all those classes you suffered through will be worth it because she is an incredibly generous marker. With her, you will get a really good grade!
Kelly assigns fair grades, and you can succeed in the class as long as you show up. She is also an excellent guide for writing essays.
Kelly Train is an amazing professor. I've taken both her classes, and have enjoyed both of them equally. Her teaching style is different, but is beneficial for your learning. She does not use powerpoint slides nor does she post them, so you have to attend class. The class is a breeze if you attend the class and do the work- which isn't alot.
I've taken 3 classes with Kelly and all of them were amazing. You have to attend lectures because there is no slides or anything posted. Note down exactly what she says and you'll be fine. The exam questions are taken straight from the lecture. She marks the essay VERY easily. Her feedback on the proposal is straight to the point and very helpful.
she was a good prof. you could tell she only thinks that she is right. she doesn't have slides or anything so id you don't write down what she says, you won't have any notes to go off of. both midterm and final were online multiple choice and they weren't too bad. she seems like a hard headed person but she is a very fair grader.
Kelly actually cares about her students and wants them to do well in her class. I would 100% recommend taking any of her classes. The only downside is she doesn't have lecture slides to use for the midterm or final exam so it forces you to go to class and take notes.
Really great professor! Very glad I took this class. Very clear grading criteria and gives great advice on work. Comes late to class sometimes though
She may come across as intimidating at first but she's actually super lighthearted and funny during lectures. Very generous marker for proposal and essay, and online exams were easy. Only downside is that she doesn't have lecture slides, so you have to take notes. She makes the content very easy to understand though!
This is my third time taking Dr. Train and she is my all time favourite professor. The only advice I have is to take her instructions literally. Many students try to go above and beyond when you can get an A just by doing exactly what she says. If you are confused about something just ask her--don't overcompensate.
She shows up extremely late to class very often, she marks easy for papers but the guidelines are extremely strict and a lot of little things could give you an automatic 0, but then her exams are extremely difficult and the answers are meant to confuse you and a lot of students do poorly on her exams which drops their marks.
This is the fourth and first online class I've taken with Dr. Train. Her classes are better in person. What frustrated me about her online lecture notes is that she never puts in-text citations, so you have to guess and check which reference she used. Her references are good but some are inaccessible. However, she's very generous in marks.
Professor Train is very knowledgeable and approachable, but the grading in this online class is uneven. She is very generous when it comes to the course essay and essay proposal, as well as the participation/discussions. But her exams, both multiple choice, are difficult to do well in since the answers are way too similar.
While she is a lenient marker for the single essay, gives extensive feedback for the essay proposal, and provides an easy 15% through discussion posts, the test and exam however were very difficult. Very vague and confusing wording when it comes to questions and answers (easy to confuse the wrong answer for the right one).
She doesn't use slides or anything, she just speaks. Often found myself getting lost as to where we were as she got off-topic a bit. However, she was a very generous marker & her discussion posts were easy marks. Exams were a bit hard but they were online & you could do it any time normally within a week. She knows what she's talking about though.
She is a bit intimidating, but marks easy her lectures are lively, short AND SWEET and plus she's hilarious shed talk about her real life experiences and crack a few jokes. She marks very leniently and is good with extensions.
Horrible, I regret taking a course with this woman. Never in all my years of university have I ever had a prof post to public discussion boards our feedback in such a nasty and degrading way -_-
She doesn't really reflect the good reviews at least in my case. Her instructions are degrading and all of the specifics feel like she wants to catch you in something you aren't going to do. I'm not sure if that makes sense, but she definitely feels some kind of gratification in the power she believes she holds over students.
Kelly Train was an amazing prof who made her lectures interesting with her real life examples and stories that she would tell. She's really understanding when it comes to deadlines and is not a difficult marker at all. I highly recommend taking her classes.
amazing class and prof! the lectures were engaging and interactive, so you'll never get bored. Attendance was mandatory as lecture content wasn't posted. essay proposal marking is lenient; follow her feedback, start early, and you'll do well for the essay. exams were online and based on lecture notes/readings. highly recommend this class and prof!
i genuinely believe that she is writing these reviews lol -- dont get me wrong the class was easy but her tone in comments feels so rude/hostile. her lectures were not engaging, she rarely asked for our opinions or picked on people with raised hands. she also is very stand offish and unapproachable.
bruh......
Not good at all! discourages students from learning yet the content she teaches is so easy that it doesn't make a sense, it's just complaints directed towards students. Also will amplify fear and then feed off it. Just not a good professor at all it's almost laughable. Good luck and riddance
Professor Train was amazing. She taught this course so well and made it entertaining. Attendance however is mandatory as she won't post any notes or slides, but worth attending because of how well she taught it. For the essay, her feedback was well-described and easy to get a good mark as long as you follow the criteria. Would Recommend!
This course is graded on four things: discussion posts every week, essay proposal, essay, midterm, final exam. The exams are online. She doesn't post lecture material. She wasn't necessarily hard, but not really a course you can't show up for and just pass, especially with the discussion posts. The essay wasn't hard just follow ALL the instructions
A no nonsense, straight to the point professor. You will learn a lot in this course. Dr Train marks the final essay generously if you follow the rules precisely and get your points across. The weekly discussions are a good way to recap what you learned in the week. If you want feedback from her, do it at an appropriate time.
she marks generously likely to avoid student complaints but then sends emails claiming that she 'marked extremely generously' and the grades dont reflect the work done. i'm unsure why she would say this but then still give high marks out. its like she wants us to feel guilty even though that is simply not the case. conniving.
Enjoyed her lectures. If you require slideshows to learn, do not take this class (she presents content through speaking and you must take in-class notes to learn the content). She is an easy marker for discussion posts and the essay, as long as you follow her instructions. Exams were online, read the textbook as questions will show up from there.
The class was easy, but the issue is that she does not have lecture slides and she speaks so fast. If you are attending this class, you need to be as attentive as you can because you can miss valuable information.
I like Kelly, the course was not too difficult. What made it difficult for me is that the online courses are very intense and filled with LOTS of notes from her that you need to read.
As the other comments mention, her tone comes off a bit condescending usually, but if you follow instructions and take good notes in class it's an easy elective!!
This was a decent course for an elective where marks were easy to get. She did not have slides for her lectures so you had to be very attentive during classes. Professor Train gives very good feedback for the essay and is a very generous grader.
soild prof, took 300 with her last semester and 502 and 608 with her this semester. she is very clear on what she wants so all of her classes are graded based on the same assignments (online midterm and final, essay proposal, d2l posts, 2000 word essay) she's actually quite funny in my opinion but her humour isn't for everyone
Save yourself and avoid by any means necessary.....
Did seem a little bit intimidating at first but overall nice prof. Mid-term and exam were online and she gave a week to do it whenever. Needed to attend in person lectures though, did not post any notes. Really generous essay marker and I got a really good grade
Not accessible class in terms of access to materials/slides. With this class, she often would show up late by 30 mins or more (often with her grocery shopping with her) and as there are no slides, we would have to wait for her. content is interesting, easy exams and she is an easy marker- gives very honest, in-depth feedback.
she does not check ai
chill prof, generous marker, but has no slides and comes late at times. But overall pretty good
She is a great lecturer (no pp slides, so take notes). However I have actual criticisms of her content. She needs to read theories and studies post 1990s. The over saturation of radical feminism doesn't allow for other more contemporary perspectives. Additionally if you want a good mark just pander to her opinions and do exactly what she says.
You need to go to class and write down everything she says for her exams, because she doesn't provide slides. Exams are online and very easy. She marks generously on written assignments. Honestly, no complaints at all. This was an easy course, and she was a great prof
Prof Train seems scary, but she's very knowledgeable and kind. The midterm and final were both online and we got a week to do it. Exams were both multiple choice, and marked the essay very generously. Her lectures are just her talking, but it doesn't boring. She'll randomly drop political lore thats super interesting and we would all go oooo ahhh.
Her thinking is outdated and uninclusive; she defines what sociology is as anything outside her own narrow ideology. Her thinking is dangerous and damaging, outlining specifically who is allowed to experience violence, what "really" counts as violence, and who can enact it. NOT WORTH IT! I have never been so apologetic by a prof!
The material is lecture based. No slides just outline that is filled in through her lecture. She is very engaging and entertaining as a lecturer. She is hilarious because everything she says is true and relevant to the course material. Make sure to show up and pay attention. Midterm and Final exam all online/multiple choice. 1 term paper.
This is my first class and she is very angry
I never went to any of her classes except for the first 2 weeks to get an understanding of her classes. Exams were online so it was easy to pass those. Easy marker as well. Great course and prof if youre looking for an easy credit and grade.
Dr. Kelly Train is a prof I have taken many time, she is the best. She very passionate about what she's teaching and cares a lot about her students' well-being. Make sure to attend the lectures because she does not use or post slides. There are easy participation marks given for weekly discussion posts, two exams online, and an essay. An easy A.
Don't show up on time. Class was pushed back and cancelled a lot, which was nice, but got annoying. Lectures were engaging, she is a good prof. Things got a bit repetitive by the end, but overall a good experience. Open book exam and one essay, but other than that, just non-graded discussion posts.
Honesly, Kelly Train is one of my favourite professors at TMU.
I love the course she is pretty cool. It is hard as she does not post slides/notes where you can look back to study but if you are good at note taking then you will do good. Getting notes from others does not really help as everyone take them differently. She seems strict but she is nice.
I would def take Dr. Train's class again. Lectures are only taught verbally (no slides). There are weekly discussion posts (if you do all, it's automatic 100%). Attend all lectures because notes aren't posted unless she doesn't finish teaching. If you need an extension, she will grant it. I asked her for two extensions, and she gave them.
She does not post notes (unless running out of time), so it's necessary to attend class. We had 2 exams before the final exam (online), which were not hard. She's usually late to class, but doesn't risk taking a later train because if she is at class early, you will miss the notes.
She comes off very strict but she is very nice! Use the module outlines as a guide throughout the lecture, and get ready to type. She does no slideshows so write down like everything she says. Typing the entire time keeps it kind of engaging, her jokes make the lectures interesting too! Professor Kelly you will be missed!
Good marker
Favourite prof by far. I often find lectures w/o powerpoints to be not as engaging, but Dr. Train is hilarious, quirky, and knows how to keep a class interesting. Often late but its forgivable. Notes are not posted online unless the lecture wasnt finished. Dont skip! Discussion posts after each lecture, one paper, one midterm, one final exam.
Kelly has a very particular teaching style; no slideshows, comes off as aggressive, very educated, and strongly opinionated - her style is not for everyone. However, grading is very generous and both tests (midterm and final) are online with an essay as well.
She's bland but extremely kind. She is an easy marker and gives good extensions. She is fair to her students and understanding. I have taken many courses with her and it was amazing because she made my course load feel less than it was. Take her!!!!!!!!!!
I had this prof in my first year ( 2021). Since graduating, I feel comfortable saying that although she never made me cry, it was horrible to have to watch peers and friends cry because of a class (literally. she would make them cry in class with no remorse). She's just not for the sensitive... take her if you can handle the heat.
Such an easy class with her. Both the midterm and final were online multiple choice. The essay is graded very generously. She's an easy marker, and would definitely recommend taking her.
second course ive taken with her & she's very generous in terms of marking your papers but the midterm & finals get so confusing because she jumbles the wording. you cannot take this class if you can't take any feedbacks because she gets so passive aggressive
Dr Train seems strict but she is really kind when you communicate with her. She is super generous in terms of marking and gives feedbacks very often. She had 1 online midterm, 1 essay, 1 essay proposal, 1 online final exam and daily discussion board. I honestly loved her lectures and she doesn't usually post slides so taking notes is recommended.
The Prof covers all the material in person, even if the readings aren't done, so take notes in her class. Her exams are online and it's available for several days, but must still be completed before the deadline. There is a 90 min time limit, once the exam is opened. She also goes by Dr.Train, not Mrs or Ms! She is an extraordinary Prof and kind!
She creates an engaging classroom with witty and honest humor that mixes beautifully with the class material. This is a professor who treats you like an adult but also understands student hardships. She seems intimidating at first but she's funny, kind, and considerate. Her honest attitude and behavior is a beyond respectable, a great professor.
She's a traditional prof who doesn't have slides and speaks directly to the class. Although she doesn't take attendance, I'd recommend attending class to take notes as she covers topics in great detail. She's intimidating at first, but funny and kind. I would 100% take another class with her.
I found Kelly to be a lenient marker. Comes off as unapproachable and aggressive, but her class was okay. It can get dry at times. She does not have any slideshows, so ensure you're paying attention.
Professor Train was an overall great professor. As long as you keep up with the weekly discussions and refer to her feedback when creating your essay you'll do great. Her lectures are useful and while she doesn't provide notes or slides I found that if you missed a class a lot of the material can be learned online.
she is late to class and i mean she's 20-30 minutes late to class. she is very blunt and doesn't really joke around. she is a bit late to grading stuff so be ready to wait for grades. the BIG marks were from the midterm, essay and final. the essay was very easily graded and the midterm and final were online. she doesn't post you you have to attend
