Santiago is definately worthy of good words, given his dedication to cover controvercial material, but he can get rather frustrated when you don't hit the money on what he's thinking some times. Talk to him!! Strict, yet understanding.
best class offered at binghamton, but be prepared to read, read, read, read
This guy teaches not to follow the syllabus or the course guidelines but to prop up his Socialist beliefs.
This man made me into a Sociology major. Despise Anthropology with a passion but the discussion in class we had made me choose this as a major.
this dude is the epitome of elitest college professors. he sucks bad. boo santiago
hes a little intimidating, but you will learn so much from his lecture because he isnt afraid to approach really controversial topics. the class is kinda hard cuz you read so much, but knowledge you get from him is worth it.
Not a bad class to get an N credit
Horrible, the man is only teaching to project his socialist views upon his students. He's also blatantly **** when the class he teaches is supposed to be about race and cultural relations
Extremely boring class, he makes participation 30% of your grade but gets really pissed off if you say anything he feels is wrong. LOTS of really boring reading that I basically gave up doing bc its so horrible. Huge **** DONT TAKE THIS CLASS
I was really close to dropping this class b.c he gave us ridiculous amts of readings and doesnt really go over the readings in class either; he assumes that we comprehended it fine if no body asks questions. If u get the material and participate, u will do fine. i still dont like him tho.
Radicals love Kelvin Santiago because he makes Bill Martin look like Ronald Reagan. Kelvin is NOT easy, and some argue he is the most demanding. And he may not be clear to you sometimes-but rest assure he tries his best to be. He is, however, VERY helpful and goes above and beyond for his students.
Pretentious man yet you can do fine if you read and go to class.
Extremely interesting, knowledgeable professor. The cowardly students who annonymously slander him on this site are probably the ones who came to class with a closed-mind and then refused to engage in intellegent conversation. Whatever your views are, you will leave his class challenged.
The class was boring, he didn't make any sense, and the readings were so dry it was unbearable. I ended up withdrawing from the course, not worth the Gen Ed. credit.
ridiculous amount of readings, difficult to grasp course and hard to participate without doing the readings, exam questions are half a page long each and there are 12 of them usually, takes u half the exam to read them, BUT he is very knowledgable and knows what he is teaching, willing to help whenever possible, good experience and nice guy
He changed my life. I love him. He is a really nice guy, but he is HONEST. He doesn't hold back. He lets you know how it is.
He is extremely intelligent and will challenge your views no matter what they are. If you want to REALLY learn and THINK take him. Tests are open book & as long as you understand the concepts you are fine. Teaching method: Socratic
VERY intelligent man. Will listen to your views but won't let you state your opinoin, you will need evidence to back it up. I took this class because it sounded interesting and it was but it was not easy; tons of reading and hard tests.
Extremely interesting and pertinent to today's world. Not an easy grader, and the readings can be difficult, but its worth it if you have any interest in 9/11 or Iraq. Class truly opened my eyes to the world we live in now, and it is exactly what a college class should be like.
This course is interesting and eye-opening...however, there are only two opportunites to make grades in this course and no matter how much material you know, it is likely that you will not get the grade you want...for a sociology course (which is the easiest major) the TA's and professor grade way too hard....
Class is thought provoking. I learned so much in this class about everything! He tends to go off topic but everything he says is amazing. Very smart man. Questions on tests are long and hard to read but once you start to answer, it will come to you easily. Tests are essay format. Suggest take final instead of writing paper.
good man but he will favor the latino members of the class, i got by with reading less than he required which is a lot. He has very strong opinions and you'd better be able to back up what you say. If you're looking for a stress free, easy class, this isn't it
Honestly, he was easily the worst professor I have ever had. I will say he was extremely knowledgable but he jumped around from subject to subject and never really tied in a lot of points he said he would.Being graded on very little and they expect too much out of you for a 50 minute mid-term.Was condescending and made you not want to participate
Professor Santiago is a brilliant man yet he is condescending. Unless you are spanish/black I don't suggest participating in class because he will belittle you and unleash his inner fury. If you are a PPL student do not admit this or he will chew you up. Leaving class early is always recommended.

DON'T DO TO YOURSELF. there is is a ton of difficult reading every single night (60+ pages.)class participation is 1/3 of your grade (not as easy as it b/c as soon as you do speak he finds a way to prove u r wrong-he is very intimidating! On his behalf, he is very educated on the topics.would be a better fit at a real iv school where arrogance is
OMG...THE MOST FRUSTRATING CLASS EVER!!! i was super interested in this topic b4 but now i just associate it with the prof. and want to run away from it!!! he is very condescending, makes paticip. 1/3 but then makes you not want to speak, always late, plays favorites,in tests r equivalent of other prof.s take home essays, puts students down, ect, ect
He can be a very difficult teacher at time, but overall i enjoyed his teaching style. He expects you to read and come prepared for class not much to ask out of student, you need to ask questions and participate, and if you do that you should be fine. READ he asks alot of questions about the readings
So arrogant, that students of his die before finishing their degree (literally).
This professor was arrogant, blatantly uninterested in the class, late all the time, didn't get grades back until ridiculously late, and did not clearly explain connections among the topics he brought up.
Terrible. Avoid.
horrible. avoid at all costs
Do not take this class. I'm not dumb at all and this class was a challenge for me. The only good thing is after having sat through this the rest of college will be easier. Not a class for freshman year.
he does not teach soc 100 as an intro class..the work is a ton of reading and he expects you to make the links between all the opinions and causes and effects. i thought i would like this class but i hate it
do not take this class, you will regret it. too much reading
This Intro class has a lot of readings, however they are interesting to learn about. The professor is intimidating, but very smart.
Horrible. He is a crazy socialist, and very angry. Disrespectful to his students. His lectures are just summaries of the readings (he also assigns readings from crazy liberal wingnut blogs). You read 100 pages of the heaviest, driest readings a week. Bing would be much better without him. AVOID AVOID AVOID.
lots of reading. most of them are interesting. he is critical but helpful to students.
this class is insansely hard. There is so much work it's rediculous, more than my other 3 classes put together. You will need to put in 15 hours a week to do decent. I got a B or B+ and it took over my life. Walking on water is much, much easier than this SOC 100a class. Trust me.
Walking on water would be way easier than getting an A in this course. I promise you.
this guy is ridiculous, self righteous, and arrogant. avoid it at all costs major waste of time. thanks for nothing kelvin.
If your thinking about being a sociology major....DONT GO TO BINGHAMTON.....this was a CRAZY class!!!
Kelvin gets a bad rap because he's tough, intimidating and slightly condescending. Which is all true. BUT, he is also brilliant, and everything he says has some truth in it. This is a TOUGH class, so if you are looking for an easy Intro, look somewhere else. I worked my butt off, but I got an A. If you want it, you gotta WORK! Thanks Kelvin!
By far the worst professor in the university!!!!! He is one-sided, rude, and his readings were inappropriate for an intro course....Biggest Waste of time!! Do not take this class!
came off as really smart, but i slowly found that he was a pompous know it all who really knew nothing. stretched facts and stories to benefit his point. horrible, horrible teacher, i can't stress how unhelpful he was and how terrible this class was. on the plus side, i didn't even go for the last 3 weeks or read at all and pulled off a B
I am currently in this class and it is insane. He is not helpful my any means. He makes you feel pathetic in class when we are being forced to talk for a good grade. He pretty much sets the class up for failure. Def. do not take him if you want to pass.
The professor is incredibly pretentious, refuses to meet with you except as a last resort, insults students for trying to learn by asking questions, and has ridiculous, non credible sources for his readings. I switched into another sections and was given a real sociology class instead of the joke this poor excuse for a professor teaches.
I got an A-. I really like Kelvin. I had him for SOC 100, and didn't really like him but he grows on you. He pushes you, gives a lot of reading and expects a LOT. Which is good. He makes you think about issues you don't normally think about, and forces you to look at different perspectives. Those that complain about Kelvin are too soft, I think.
This professor is a true disgrace....I cant emphasize that enough.....He thinks he knows everything....in reality, he knows nothing...TERRIBLE CLASS, TERERIBLE PROFESSOR! SPARE YOURSELF THE MISERY!
In all honesty, I used to sit in his lectures video conferencing with my friend Laura next to me and my friend Kristen at UMiami. I never showed up to section meetings. I managed an 89 on the midterm and a 98 on the final. He drones on about NOTHING don't bother showing up to lecture.
Santiago Velles, was the worse professor I have ever had. He was condescending, arrogant and does not like anyone who does not think like him or that is not hispanic. He never made any sense and unless you have a caring TA you are screwed. Avoid him like the plague!!!
Worst teacher I've ever had. He talks about nothing, tries to embarrass his students when having a debate, is not helpful, and tells you the books are wrong. I wish I read this site before taking his class. Avoid him at all cost!
Don't take a class with KSV if you are not a serious student (which I suspect most of those who are bashing him are not). He is knowledgeable, intelligent, tough and expects serious students. If you enroll in this class with the intent to challenge yourself and engage in serious and rigorous learning, KSV will enable you to succeed in that regard.
He is tough, but knows his****. Many people complaining seem very eager to create excuses for why they ****ed the class up. Its true that he will bring you down if you say something dumb, but he expresses WHY, which is key to a good professor. If you don't feel like working your ass off, don't take this class, but you will be missing out.
He deserves a better class of students. He expects you to read, participate, and think. If you can't do that, you should be in a university setting.
Give thanks for a professor who actually expects students to think critically, READ (as in SCHOLARLY material), and develop articulation and the skills to present an argument. It's refreshing to learn that just because a book/article is assigned, doesn't mean it's perfect, comprehensive, or even true. And it's up to the student to decipher and comp
He's one of the few professors at binghamton who would make you think critically. Lots of (hard)readings. But the man is brilliant; in fact, I'm now considering sociology as a career. If you expect an easy A, don't take his class. If you really want to understand how society is structured and how this is perpetuated, then take him.
He's a really smart guy who won't take b.s comments-he challenges you to actually think. It's really rewarding if you do the readings and ask him questions. Participation counts a lot, but he counts going to his office hours or even asking questions as participation. It's simple: If you don't want to learn, don't take his class. A great professor.
Professor is very arrogant--If you don't think like him, you will have difficulty taking his class--He has no tolerance for those people that don't think like him
He is smart but expects students to instantly know what he's thinking, and gets impatient when they don't. If you are a sociology major I can see this class being helpful, but if you just need the gen ed grade SEEK ELSEWHERE!
don't take the class if you are doing it for gen ed. if you want to learn about radical histories, racism, sexism, and capitalism, you should take his class.
Loved him! He makes you think for yourself and in the long run helps you to remember information better and see new perspectives.
He assigns too much reading, he himself cannot cover it all in the class time, resulting in constant catching-up and confusion. Very smart, but not a good teacher whatsoever. Is blatantly rude, in what seems to be his twisted humor. He could easily take an ENTIRE class to get to a "point" and you still won't know what the point is. Harsh guy.
He turned a theory class into a history class, because that's what he knows. Participation is 30%, and intimidating because you're wrong unless you agree with him, and his responses make you look/feel like an idiot, but that's just how he is. He'll easily spend 30 mins proving a point unrelated to the material. I would avoid him if at all possible.
His classes are difficult. There are many complex readings assigned and you're expected to discuss them in class. Class participation is around 30% so you're better off speaking up. Having said that, he will not be easy on you once you speak. Nevertheless, he's not a tough grader and you will have learned a lot.
Ok, not an easy class, lots of tough readings but worth it. He pushes you to know what you're talking about and know it well. He is highly informed in his field. Tests are hard (cumulative essays) but he is an extremely kind grader. Know your stuff, pay attention , DO THE READINGS. if you participate he will respect you. Highly suggested.
Hotly ideologically charged but in the most incoherent way. The readings teach you more than the lectures, but you don't have to do them. Don't take it unless you really like long conversations about political economy, marginalization of oppressed identities, and social control
Santiago is a tough teacher, but if you are willing to work you will do well! He comes off as a little harsh at first and can scare the crap out of you, but once you're engaged its a great learning experience. He says attendance is optional but if you're going to do well you need to be in class and participate every day.
The worst professor I've ever had. Avoid his classes at all costs. Everyone in his classes usually agree with his viewpoints, so if you disagree with him, get ready to be viewed negatively by your peers. If you disagree with him, you're wrong, even if you have evidence to prove your point. Doesn't promote a friendly environment for discussion
Grades participation, midterm, final. The midterm and final are so complex all of the questions will take you 20 minutes to get through. He is inconsiderate and condescending. Do not take with him if you don't have to. Attendance is not mandatory, but if you want to pass, you'll need to go and participate.
Hard ! Lectures are confusing. The professor has an obvious viewpoints .Its easiest so go with the flow. LOTS OF READING .GradeMid+Fin+participation. Show up and participate! Best way to succeed is to be strategic about the reading. You dont need to do it all, just group readings into topics and focus on those few readings in the topic.
Professor Santiago is AWESOME! Hes a little intimidating and seems extremely opinionated at first, but once you get used to whats expected of you you start to really enjoy the class IMHO. This class pushed me harder than many other classes and I learned a lot. Its expected of you to learn how to really know what youre talking about!
Til this day, I still think Professor Santiago is one of the best professors I have EVER HAD. He definitely scares the crap out of you when first starting the semester in his class bc of how strict/tough he is as a professor, but don't let that scare you! He's worth it. Once you see how seriously he takes the subject, youll see it was all worth it!
He is intimidating at first, but if you do the readings and participate in class BASED on what you read in the reading then you will do fine! Participation is 30%, but if you are too shy to talk in class you can just go to office hours. The exams are exactly like the homework discussion questions. If you read, go over the HW, will pass!
I learned a lot but the class seem a bit disorganized, you have to participate often if you want to get a good grade
Professor kelvin is very passionate and expects everyone to participate and engage in the class. Although attendance isnt required, Participation matters and we have two tests.
Professor Santiago-Valles is undoubtedly a tough professor, however he is also one of the most insightful professors that I have encountered thus far at Binghamton. He teaches in a socratic seminar style and participation is 30% of your grade, but if you complete the assigned readings in time for class to prepare it is an easy third of your grade.
Beware! A major percentage of your grade relies on participation. This means you have to speak in every single class at some point, however, he likes to focus on critical thinking. Because of this, when you participate he will grill you until you basically feel stupid, literally made me not want to speak up. Definitely not a class for the weak.
Avoid at all costs. Smart and cool guy for sure, but his class consists of one-on-one oral examinations every time you try to participate (which is 30% of grade.) If that doesn't sound good to you, then don't take a class with him. No structure to his class at all, and he will humiliate you if your question/statement is not graduate-school level.
NEVER TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. I do not mean this lightly; Santiago-Valles is the worst professor I have had at Binghamton. I am a good student and have never once been in real danger of failing a course until SOC 378. His teaching style consists of purely devil's advocacy and one-on-one oral interviews each class. Impossible to learn
Disorganized. Lectures consist of students 1 by 1 saying opinions and him ridiculing you or praising you. Doesn't actually have any lectures. He is extremely intelligent and well rounded. Became accessible after many complaints. Participation is 30% of your grade, the rest 2 very vague exams. I suggest email him/ office hrs for participation.
He is an arrogant guy which is ironic given that the class is intended to enlighten you on collective social issues. I havent learned anything from his lectures since we dont have discussions. Instead he spends the class time arguing with the student on trivial things like the wording of their questions while giving them non-answers in response.
Participation matters- I rarely spoke in class and had an F in the participation grade. However, exams are 70% of the grade and are easy if you do the readings before test day and can write well. I cant say I learned anything in his class due to his pompous attitude and disorganized behavior. I have heard he is chill when he isnt teaching.
Worst professor I've ever had in college. If you're on this page because you're still not registered for classes and are trying to get a read on possible professors, listen to me: Do. NOT. Take. This. Professor. This "professor" is an arrogant man whose only real purpose seems to be going out of his way to make class a miserable experience for all.
The worst professor. Argues with nearly every student regardless of his own view. Covers no valuable material. No lecture notes/visual presentation. Makes students not want to raise their hand yet requires participation for 30%. Avoid him at all costs. (my friends and I laughed about his reviews but sadly realized his reviews are on par)
Literally said the N word yesterday in class. Now from what I see, he doesn't look like a black man. He's hispanic. He used it to explain the acronym "ANWD" which is "any (n-word) will do". He said it with the hard ER too. As a black student, I was disgusted that he would even have the audacity to say that in class. Overall terrible professor.
Worst professor Ive had at Binghamton, will not hesitate to make you feel absolutely stupid. Participation is 30%, but there are no opportunities to talk when he goes on 30 minute tangents. Tests are awful and gives no feedback. He is smart but incredibly evil. AVOID AT ALL COST.
There's nothing else I could really say that every other review hasn't said already. This man is singlehandedly the worst educator I have ever seen in my entire life. It's actually quite a shame because I found the readings to be very interesting and engaging. Unfortunately, his terrible attitude and blatant disrespect killed my interest.
Professor is so disorganized it is hard to follow him in lecture. Just when I am starting to understand he changes his thought process and loses me. It is hard to follow what he is saying since he continues to change his thoughts and adds more information onto what he is saying. The zoom meetings help with participation and the TA helped a lot
- i think part of my soul died with this class - 35% midterm, 35% final, 30% participation - RAISE YOUR HAND EVERY CLASS - he has an inflated ego and loves arguing with his students, even if it takes up an hour of class time - he also shows up +20 minutes late sometimes - he knows what he's talking about, he's just...difficult
Kelvin was pretty bad. I needed this class for my degree so I couldn't drop but I wanted to so bad. Overall the class was pretty easy as long as you went to class, participated, and took notes (we could use our notes on the exams) but Kelvin was always humiliating students and playing devil's advocate making me not want to participate (it is 30%)
Not for the faint of heart. If you aren't majoring in soc or have social anxiety, take somebody else. Scary and often demeaning in class, but actually really nice if you ever have anything going on. Definitely recommend doing your own learning outside of class; lectures are socratic. Midterm & final are graded fairly.
Not very smart, probably the least qualified professor ive had. Couldn't distinguish between president of the senate and majority leader and doesn't know what an insurrection is. Everything all other negative reviews say is true.
Participate and agree with everything he says and you'll do fine The kids who were voiced more conservative opinions were grilled by this dude I made the mistake of skipping most of his classes but aced the exams by writing left-wing answers, and got away with a B
This class is a rollercoaster ride - the professor expects constant participation, but can be harsh if your views don't align. Ace the exams by writing well, and try using unstuck ai alongside the textbook for study prep.
This professor is a no bull kinda person and frankly, i love that about him! I read a comment saying he grills those with more conservative leaning views, but what he really does is challenge viewpoints and force you to justify the ethics and legitimacy of your perceptions. unsurprisingly, most of the time these are the individuals who can't :-)
I think people tend to rate him poorly because of personal feelings. He doesn't coddle and many aren't equipped with the mental fortitude to step away from their egos and analyze various perspectives alternate to their own. which is a huge part of what it takes to learn sociology! digest the material as if you were the author - helps for discussion
Good prof. Can be brutal at times but he just likes to make you think critically. People who rate him poorly just lack critical thinking skills. I learned more in one semester in his class than any other class I've previously taken. Would recommend if you actually want to learn something.
