Thought I was doing well, got an A+ on the first test, then it went downhill, going to class is a must, helpful, not always clear, helpful to get a good TF
Very easy, but very boring. He goes over each concept for several weeks and spends huge amounts of time explaining the importance of knowing statistics instead of teaching the topics. Tests are fairly easy, homework is easy. Easy A, but not easy to sit through.
Mutlivariable calc: very good teacher, gives many examples especially for applied math. Interesting and entertaining, explains things well, somewhat challenging but not hard.
easy class
Connects much of his teaching in this class to MA225, even though it is not a prerequisite, if you didn't take MA225, this will be a hard course but be willing to meet during office hours for much needed help if needed. Lectures are entertaining but matierial dry, very short and easy homework, tests can kill you because they are "outside the box"
very good professor, he's fun and makes jokes all the time. Everyone shows up for class 'cause he's very fun to listen to, it's also easy to understand. TAKE HIM !
Extremely enthusiastic professor. He has an encyclopedic knowledge of math and math history, so lectures can be really funny and interesting. The class sometimes felt a little disorganized, and it wasn't clear what sections of the text to look at. But overall a good class taught by a very good professor.
This was the 2nd class I had with Chung and I love him. For his linear algebra class, it's very important to go to class though or at least get class notes from someone because his tests are much more like his notes than anything that is in the book.
Chung is really good professor who does lots of examples and explains things well. Tests are hard but not unfairly so, and he is quite generous with final grades.
Great, funny guy, but a little disorganized. Great to talk to for biostatistics, but not for probability. Lots of examples, and he bases his tests on them. It helps if you have some background, but if you don't, then it will be hard to follow.
Great professor! Really easy to understand and he is very entertaining! I felt like I was learning linear algebra and the meaning of life at the same time.
He's OKAY. I never understood why everyone loved him so much. He explains things very clearly, but he always comes in 10-15 minutes late and then rushes everything at the end. The tests are manageable but they're so much harder than the questions in the textbook. The TA, Wes was amazing though. Class average is pretty much a B.
Professor Chung was my MA226 and MA242 teacher. He was amazing and I am so grateful to have had him as my professor. We'd talk about dental school during OH!
Chung is awesome. True, he is a coffee addict (no joke) and will sometimes go off on random tangents during class about who knows what, but it just makes it more entertaining. Do the homework (not collected) and tests are easy and straightforward. Also come to class, it might help your grade. Glad I took him over the ENG linear algebra prof.
I learned nothing in this class! I dropped down to 121 after taking 123 and predicted the class being a breeze. However, not only did I not learn anything, I didn't even do as well as I did in 123 because Chung never tells you what's on his exams. He's very unorganized and unclear. Take Kezim if you want a good Calc experience.
Professor Chung is very entertaining but most of what he goes over in class is not what's on the exams nor does it really help you do the homework problems but some things he covers in class are not in the book but are on exams. He was very unengaged both times I went to office hours. His class personality is fun but outside of class he's a jerk.
Professor Chung has an entertaining class personality but he's a jerk outside of class. He was very unengaged both times I went to office hours and he's always 10-15 minutes late to class because he gets coffee. He covers material not in the book and puts them on exams but most of what he teaches in class doesn't help when doing homework problems.
I have calculus background in high school, so he is pretty good if you have prior knowledge. He is always late to class (except exam dates) and he lets you out early once in a while. He is pretty clear explaining concepts and sometimes funny, although he can be distracted by his own stories. his TF always seems nervous and has a heavy accent.
I loved going to his classes as they were very entertaining. He would go off on many tangents. However, material on the test was not taught well. The TA had a thick accent and rushed through problems without really explaining. To do well in class, do every single one of the problems from textbook.
Great professor. Late to class always - but he knows it. Will help you as much as you need if you show the effort. Funny, too. Level-headed. Take as many classes as you can with him.
Great and fun professor, loved his class. hw not mandatory, and tests are not impossibly hard if you actually go through homework questions and stuffs. : )
His class was extremely entertaining. He tends to drift off a little bit, but that's a trick. You have to stay focus at all times. The materials on the test were not completely the same with the ones we learned in class.
Chung's a great professor. Very entertaining in class (loves Spike TV and Starbucks), which is important with a subject like math. He is very helpful if you go to office hours. Go to lecture and do the HW problems (not mandatory) and you'll do fine -- the tests are based on in-class material and HW problems and aren't that difficult.
Explanations are clear (sometimes very entertaining). A word of advice: do your HW (the odd and even exercice numbers from the book) and you'll do great on the exams. Math with Chung was a pleasure.
Great teacher, speaks at least 5 languages which he incorporates into his lectures. Quite confident in explaining concepts and very very funny. Great prof, but grade is solely dependent on test grades.
Chung was a really good teacher. He had lots of funny and interesting tangents and would joke around a lot. His tests would come straight from the book. The grading for the tests was extremely fair. I didn't learn that much because I learned most from AP Calc AB but the new information was easy to understand.
Awesome Professor...really funny, loves math and science, keeps class interested even in the morning. If your taking Diff eq, take it with Chung. Exams cover what you learn, really easy grading, and great profesor
He takes a difficult class and makes it straight forward. Take good notes and do his practice exams and you will ace every test. Also really laid back and entertaining in class.
At first you will find him easy, but that's not the real case. I actually don't quite agree with his teaching method. No homework, no quiz? Not helpful with Calc. If you want to be interested in the subject and having fun taking class and you are really self-motivated, then you are fine. Otherwise stick to someone who seems to be demanding.
Chung is a great lecturer & great at explaining concepts. I especially like how he mentions applications to topics. However, his teaching style made learning very difficult. There are no quizzes and no homework assigned. If you are very self motivated you'll be fine, but I for one need to structure that this class lacked.
He doesn't explain the material at all, I wonder if he knows what he's talking about himself. The midterms were straightforward, the questions were from the textbook. You have to learn on your own because he doesn't teach, (or take someone else!). The final only had material from the last third and was hard. You'll do well if you do the homework
I had him for Calc II and loved his class so much that I had him again for Calc III. He teaches by doing examples, and offers a great way to both find your answer and to evaluate it intuitively.
You must be self-motivated to succeed in Chung's multivariate calc class. He goes through examples in class very quickly and he skips steps assuming you already know them. YOU MUST READ THE TEXTBOOK AND DO THE HOMEWORK (even though homework is not mandatory and there are no homework or quiz grades). He is funny in lecture, not boring.
Dear everybody who said there were no homeworks: homeworks were assigned for every section covered in class and were thoroughly answered in discussion. Where were you then? Chung is a great professor for multivariable, and is very clear. The only daunting thing about his course is the final is worth 50% (can't screw up there!) Take him.
Chung was great in the beginning of class but then the material got harder and he rushed through everything so fast! You need to do hw by yourself and read the book. His exams are easy and they are exactly like the hw questions!
Very funny and fun to have class with. Explains pretty well. We didn't cover as much hard material as some other multivar classes. Beware of test grading though, he takes large deductions for small mistakes. No collected HW or quizzes, but don't blow off the practice problems (it'll save you last minute studying.) Book used for HW only.
Extremely condescending during lecture. Class is very easy, though. Better than other professors (from what I've heard), but still arrogant and unbelievably self-aggrandizing.
Maybe it was the fact that I had a 9 AM with him but I really didn't know what he was saying But if you do the homework and read problems in the textbook you'll do we'll
Really nice teacher. The class is not easy but chung is very funny. You need to go to the lecture and do the homework
Probably the worst professor I've ever had. His teaching style is incomprehensible and if I could've given him a 0 for helpfulness I would have. If you have the option of having another professor, take it.
I thought this class was relatively easy. my calc AB class in hs covered all of calc I and some of calc II, so I had a strong background in addition to being able to pick up concepts pretty well independently. however, chung can be a little scattered and unclear, so if you depend on that for math he probably isn't the best professor for you.
Do not take multi with chung, worst mistake of my life! He's a nice guy, he explains well, and if you go to office hours he's helpful, BUT his tests are INSANELY HARD, nothing compared to the assignments. DONT TAKE CHUNG!
Chung is the bomb. He is really funny in class despite being a little hard to understand at first. He moves fast during lectures, but his examples and test q's are straight from the textbook problems that he assigns. He tells the class exactly what's going to be on the exam and is very straightforward. Go to class and discussion and its an easy A.
He is the best! He is hilarious and makes lecture interesting. He goes really fast during lecture and I've found its easiest to get help from other math tutors rather than him because he goes just as fast in office hours. Do the homework because his tests are the homework questions.. most of which he goes over in class.
Chung is THE BEST. Not only is he a great professor, but he is so fair. There are no surprises on his tests but between his lectures, office hours, and discussion I feel like I've learned the content really well. He even makes it fun to class with little anecdotes. Best prof at BU.
He moves through material quickly, but explains his examples well and is really funny in class. His tests come straight from the lecture and homework problems, often the exact same, so make sure to do all the homework. Also is tough with partial credit initially, but you can get a lot of points back on a regrade if you submit a regrade request.
Class is extremely difficult, but professor chung is fairly good at teaching it. The only pitfall is that between no homework and no attendance, it's easy to fall behind, and as the material is complicated, that WILL hurt you. Prof. chung isn't too understanding of personal situations, but he's fair.
Ken is a funny guy but his exam is a little bit hard and he moves material so quickly. Make sure read the textbook.
He is realy funny at first, but then repeats the same jokes. He is the first professor who I can actually listen to while teaching math. Normally math lectures are useless to me, but somehow he makes things clear without me having to try the problems myself first. Do the homework problems because the tests are based on those.
Homeworks are optional and the your entire grade is based off of the exams. I never did any of the assignments for this class and studied by solving all of the questions he had ever assigned for homework the week before the exam. I think if you pay attention in class and do at least as much as I did to study you should do really well.
He is very straight forward with his expectations. If he says something will be on an exam ... IT WILL be on an exam. He definitely does a great job teaching with what he expects (i.e. if you have never seem something before, odds are you skipped class) because he teaches what he tests. Overall, great. Would take again, for sure.
I was very worried about my whole grade being based off of just three exams, but it worked out! He is very clear about what topic he will be teaching, and then he will do example problems. If he goes too fast, just ask how he got to a certain step. When he says something will be on the exam, it will be. Make sure you understand the problems he does
Chung's tests are hard. He goes over material really fast and doesn't collect hw. Your grade is based on three tests, which I am not a big fan of. He assumes you know your calc 1 and pre-calc stuff well. Sometimes his hw becomes really hard to keep up with because I have hw from other classes as well.
Chung is the man. He tells the same three jokes every lecture, but his lectures are amazing and very inspirational. He puts everything you learn in context and all the questions you will see in the exam he definitely emphasized or is straight from the homework problems.
Decent professor, made material make sense. But if you're struggling, he probably won't be receptive to helping you and claims that you skip class if you don't do well even if you go to all the lectures. He doesn't seem to care about students, and gets off track a lot in class. Avoid.
he's very distant from his students and he's a harsh grader. avoid.
At first, he was funny, but he can get super annoying, as he repeats the same jokes over and over again. Expect him to be late to almost every lecture. Your grade is entirely dependent on exams, which in my opinion is unfair but that's how he runs his class. Homework is never collected, and there are no quizzes either.
Terrible professor. Clearly a very smart man, but he is completely unapproachable and condescending. Often makes jokes about non-science majors and made me feel dumb on many occasions. There were plenty of times that I had a question, but on the first day he told the class that if we asked a stupid question we would be on his radar. DONT TAKE HIM!
Chung's awesome. Puts everything in context so you never have to ask "why are we doing this?" Makes you see why math is important regardless of major. If you ask for help, he's more than willing. He goes fast, keeps you on your toes.
One of the best math professors at BU. Make sure to do the homework as they will show up on the exam as well. His lectures are the best. They cover all you need to know for the exams so try not to skip any of them.
If you don't go to class, you will fail. Does not teach out of the book. However, his tests are a direct representation of what you learn in class, so if you do attend class you will do fine. Funny guy, so lectures aren't bad. Also, is extremely biased towards Math/Engineering/Economics/Physics majors. Looks down on liberal arts.
Only half the class goes to the lectures and you'll probably do fine if you don't go because it's a relatively easy subject, but most test questions are straight from class. If you go to class he gives you secret tips on what will be on the test because he hates when people don't show up. He wants you to do well in the class and is very clear.
A intelligent professor, who don't know how to teach and respect people.
Avoid Chung. Although he is the teaching style for some, he did NOT work for me. Always goes off topic to talk about Chemistry and other random things he knows about just to show off. No quizzes and homework isn't for credit, so your grade only comes from exams which is stressful.
Awesome Prof!
I took Chung in my first semester in college and struggled. This class is very dependent on you. You need to encourage yourself to go to class and do the homework as neither are required. Professor Chung is very knowledgable about the subject, but it was hard for me to take in his lectures at 9am. Tests match lectures and are only grades in class.
He is not a tough grader, however, gives reasonable questions that he mentions in class. His lecture is hilarious and you will really into it. DO NOT SKIP A CLASS OR YOU WILL BE LEFT BEHIND. He will curve or give extra quizzes for giving extra points. I am not regret taking it.
Grade was based on three exams. Two midterms and a final. He is passionate about what he teaches and, if you ask, will help you, but he will make sure that you've tried to help yourself before he does anything. It was difficult because the grade was only based on tests and if you are not a good test taker, you're screwed.
Chung is honestly so amusing. He will say some of the most random things you have ever heard, but honestly he woke me up at 9:00 am. His teaching style is ideal for those who are self motivated. If you need someone to hold your hand to study and do homework maybe you should stick to the "fluffy subjects".
He was a pretty funny guy, which made lectures less boring. He goes a little fast, but it's easy to keep up. All his notes are on the board, so it's necessary to go to lecture. Tests were very straightforward, and looked exactly like the examples in class. The homework is optional, but DO IT. It helps a lot when studying for the exams.
Ken Chung is a very funny professor. That's about the only good thing about his teaching style. He does not explain ideas thoroughly at lectures and is totally impossible to talk to outside of class. Would not take a class with him again.
He made me love Math again.
Does not bother to explain concepts further until repeatedly asked and does not seem engaged with the class. Often dismissive of students, and can be rude outside of class. Can't even format class wide emails properly. And so much more. Avoid.
I can't believe this guy gets paid to teach. By far the worst prof I have ever had. Terrible at lecturing and arrogant to the point where its actually annoying. Three tests and thats your grade. No hw, no quizzes, nothing. So you better be a good test taker because you'll fail otherwise. Trust me, take ANY other teacher for this class.
Professor Chung often relates the maths learned to applications in science. His grading system is tough: 25% test 1, 25% test 2, and 50% final. His test problems are usually straight from his lectures or from the problems in the textbook. Test are straight forward. He is helpful in responding to emails of any question and truly enjoys teaching.
I loved his lecture style - he's funny and always connects the topics he's covering to applications in other disciplines. However, grading is based only on exams, and the exams are short so small mistakes can leave a big dent. But the exams aren't bad as long as you actually do the homework. Some questions are pulled straight from the textbook.
He's super straight forward. Do the homework, get an A. Also he is the funniest professor I have ever had
Only grades based on exams for this class. The weights are 25% first exam, 25% second exam, 50% final exam. Each is short with a few heavily weighted questions that come right from the homework (maybe with numbers changed) or lecture notes. His lectures are clear, but he's super condescending. All the time. But you'll pass if you DO THE HOMEWORK
Solve the hw and be ready for the tests and you'll be good.
Extremely unhelpful both in class and out. Barely gives partial credit on exams and your whole grade is based on exams. I was struggling and found him very unwilling to give extra help.
This class is graded purely on the midterms and final. That being said, the exams aren't that difficult if you put in the effort to stay on top of homework and read the textbook. The problems are straight forward for the most part. GO TO CLASS--multi is a lot less intuitive if you're learning it yourself. Also, he's a funny guy so it's worth it.
I didn't think too poorly of Chung when I started taking the class. Although he doesn't help staying awake for his 9am lectures with his irrelevant tangents and stupid jokes, he seemed fine. Halfway through the semester, he lost my second exam and gave me a 0 for it because it was "too much work" to make a new one. I highly recommend not taking him
He goes very fast in lectures (I mean, it's 442, expect faster pace than 242), so make sure to take notes as he speaks. Grades are based purely on exams, and the exams are not that easy, but curves are good so no worries.
He is very clear and funny. Although the jokes might seem childish sometimes, but that's just the style. He often says the use of certain type of calculation, which is very useful. If one can study hard, one will get A; unlike some subjects, no matter how hard you study for them, you can't, because the questions themselves are bad.
I took Professor Chungs MA225 in 2017 Fall. He is very hilarious. Always shows off his bad Spanish and German. 500 points for entire class (200 two midterms, 200 Finals, 100 homework). Attendance is NOT mandatory. Homework is based on PARTICIPATION as free gift! He goes over material too fast! But overall I recommend to take his class. Got A-
Concentrating in class is very important since some chapters can be very confusing. Although HW is not mandatory, they are very important if you want to pass exams and since the grades are just based on midterms and final, make sure to prepare for them.
Chung does not teach. Showed up 10 or more minutes late every lecture to just copy down examples from the book. Quizzes in discussion were reviewed right after, don't even know if they really counted. Terrible feedback, little to no explanations on new topics, wouldn't take the class again if my life depended on it.
No need to attend the lecture but discussion matters. The first midterm is difficult, while the second midterm and final are fine (final only contains material after midterm2). The textbook is great, explaining everything very clear). *DO ALL THE HOMEWORK* if you want to get a good grade.
Gets lots of negative reviews because of his tough style, but if you put the effort in to meet with him he is very helpful and understanding. attend lectures and do the homework problems religiously and you will do well. no gimmicks, what he tells you will be on the test is what it is. go to all discussions for 100 points.
Professor Chung's lectures were frequently unhelpful, as he blazed through content without explaining it, and told us that if we didn't understand, we must not be attending class enough. He also told us to derive equations during tests instead of memorizing them, which was impractical given the time limit. The only grades were from tests.
Tests are problems straight from the textbook and if you pay attention in lecture you'll get an A. He is hilarious and makes the material interesting to learn. Discussions were unhelpful though but the quizzes count for your grade.
Depending on how you learn, Chung's lectures may or may not work for you. He focuses on examples rather than theory, but still tries to explain the concepts with hilarious gestures and excellent jokes. The class grade is based on 2 exams, attendance at discussion, and the final. Don't worry much if you screw up one exam, he curves well at the end.
For the love of god do the homework. Some questions on the exam are literally the exact same questions assigned on the HW. He's a funny guy but not a good lecturer. Just does math problems on the board with not much explanation for applications. There's like 4 questions on the exams so if you f*ck up on one you are screwed. Good luck.
Never required to go to class. Gave great lectures and examples. Always happy to re-explain if you raise your hand. Sometimes goes too quickly through his examples, so you need to do the readings beforehand or be prepared to ask a lot of questions.
Your grade is made up of weekly (super easy) discussion quizzes and 3 midterm exams. No finals and no homework. Chung was super funny and even though lecture was not mandatory, he doesn't post any notes from class so you want to go so you don't drown. Loved him and his exams were very fair. He made college math bearable which is an impressive feat.
You will learn how 16-year-old young newton solve calculus with paper and pencil.
Chung is such a great professor. He is funny in lecture and is clear and is open to being asked questions in lecture until you understand. He gives "hw problems" that are optional but literally if you do those then you will do good on the quizzes and the tests as they are essentially the same types of questions. Such a straightforward and funny guy
Prof. Chung does a great job of connecting MA 225's content to other math courses that use it, and you can tell how eager he is to get his students to enjoy math. His lectures are mostly focused on working through examples, and he loves to use past exam problems to illustrate concepts. The content is interesting, and he's a hilarious lecturer!
Chung was one of the worst professors I have ever had at BU. Constantly showed up late to class, told the same three corny jokes, spent more time talking about other non-STEM subjects and did not actually teach anything. Absolutely impossible to learn from him. Avoid taking him.
He's the worst professor I've had at BU. Any questions you have are likely to be met in a rude or demeaning manner. He doesn't explain concepts well at all. I wouldn't take one of his courses unless it's your only option.
Prof Chung is very unorganized and he needs to work on his pacing. He has vague grading criteria, and sometimes chooses not to follow the syllabus. For our class (remote), he would always inform the details (as in when to take them) about midterms ON THE DAYS of the midterms. Notes are great, but to ace his exams you need to do a lot more.
He sped through the material as quickly as possible and we met for less than 50% of scheduled class time. Didn't explain concepts very well. Refused to tell us what material we'd be covering for the class and only told us when we'd be meeting a few days in advance. Fortunately exams are very similar to homework problems and in class examples.
Professor was helpful/passionate, but his teaching/exams left something to be desired. If you're a student that needs to see problems solved in real time to understand them, skip taking this course online- the prof. mostly reads through prewritten notes. Can struggle and still get a good grade; exam is only 4/5 problems, and extra credit is great.
He was so inconsiderate of online students and forgets to project his screen super often. While I do appreciate professors trying to be funny/entertaining, he takes it too far where he loses track if what were doing altogether. Which SUCKS because our test grades suffer. Hes not funny and tells the same 2 jokes, Id rather get a good grade.
He is such a good professor that he will answer every question super detailedly. Concepts and calculations are well explained. Lectures are easy to follow. No homework but have one optional practice problem per week. Lots examples during lectures which are extremely useful. Listening to the lecture and you will get an A.
Calc is a tough subject but Chung made it one of the best. He's honestly so nice and so funny, makes the class interesting and enjoyable. He also cares about your grade and tries to do what he can to make sure you get a good grade. As long as you go to class and put in some work outside of class, you'll do great. Great guy.
He's entertaining and passionate during lectures, and wrote out the notes real time so it was easy to follow (not prewritten). Very reasonable exams, everything was straight from lecture, just make sure to write down all the examples given. Curve was very reasonable too. No graded homework, only 3 exams, they were fair but it's not for everyone.
If you want to be constantly lost, go head. He does little to introduce a topic and skips over "easy" entry stuff to look at harder problems, which just leaves you confused. You basically have to learn the entire course on your own. He assigns little to no homework and there were a couple of midterms and no final.
He is willing to talk with his students outside of class and really help them understand the material. He also takes the time in class to connect with his students.
The only people who enjoyed this guy were those who liked to flex their math knowledge in chat. Also, the prof's syllabus was poorly designed and that should have been a red flag from the start. Incredibly hard to pay attention, not really sure what he was going on about half the time. Dropped this class and never looked back.
Professor Chung is pretty funny and relatively easygoing. The class material was not too hard and he really took time to explain things and answer questions. But he did start to rush a bit at the end of the semester. Your grade is only based on 3 exams (homeworks aren't graded, only recommended). Exam problems are similar to homework problems.
There were no assignments and only 3 midterms during the whole semester. After getting feedbacks from students, he added some extra credit problems and it is easy to get an A if you just listen to his lecture. Maybe he is not such a good teacher, but is definitely a good choice if you want to get a good grade without working so hard.
By far my favorite math professor and class so far. Lectures were engaging and easy to follow as long as you keep up with them. There were 3 fair yet challenging midterms, no graded HW, and about 10 extra credit assignments. The HW was the best tool to learn the material outside of class and it felt very meaningful rather than busy work. 10/10
Professor Chung assumes that everyone already knows everything about beginning calculus, which is fine if you do, however, if this is your first foray into the field, prepare to be utterly confused at every turn as professor Chung will often skip steps in examples as well as draw on information only students who have already taken calc would know.
if you have a background in calc, and do the textbook problems, you will do absolutely fine in this class. Chung isn't the best at explaining everything but he is very understanding and funny, tests are straight from class and the textbook. attendance is very optional, just practice leading up to exams.
There were 3 exams (no final) and homework sets. He assigned practice problems that combined could be averaged with exams into your final grade. He did a lot of examples in class but sometimes didn't show all the steps in between and goes pretty fast. I've taken calc before so that helped a lot but it would be hard to learn from him if you haven't.
Ken Chung is the best math professor I have had at BU, coming from a math major. He may seem tough at first, but most of the policies that seem strict are actually flexible (except no late homework) but he just has to say them bc of the math department. He cracks jokes throughout the lecture and is actually so hilarious. 10/10 recommend.
Graded on 3 exams and homework, each worth 25%. He doesn't curve. He rants about how he loves engineers and degrades other majors. He's very harsh on grading and doesn't care about his students or helping them. He does a bunch of examples, but you're pretty much on your own. The textbook helps a bunch, and videos online as well.
The only grades are the midterms, but they only cover material from lecture and the optional homework. The exam problems can be a direct copy from these two sources, so attend lecture and do the homework if you want to succeed. His lectures can have tangents and he loves repeating the same two jokes but the course feels very light-hearted.
As much as Chung receives hate for repeating the same jokes throughout each and every lecture, I think he was one of the best lecturers I've ever had mainly because the doesn't try to overload you with work. Content and material drew heavily from EK 103 during the middle of the semester. Overall, highly recommended.
Professor Chung is seriously hilarious! Go to lectures and you will have a great time. His humor makes the material bearable. His exams are also very straightforward and go off of the textbook, so you will know what to expect. Definitely the best math professor I have had at bu
Chung doesnt reply the emails most of times. His lecture is just assuming everyone knows everything and degrades other major He also has bad complains towards ENG classes( EK103) You have to teach yourself most of times. His tests are just on few sections but you dont have a test guide to review. Really really bad teach. Ppl the worst Ive seen
I really enjoyed taking this course with Professor Chung because he always found a way to peak our interest and linked course materials with real life matters and how we could use what we are learning in math in our own major. However he was late most of the time and we did not get to finish everything
He really wants to give out As to everyone, just put in the effort to study. The midterm was all easy, some questions he just took from the textbook. There's only 5 questions per test, each worth 20 points. I went to maybe 75% of the lectures and enjoyed all of them (yeah he tells the same jokes but I appreciate him trying to make the class fun!)
If you study and go to class you should have no issue. Prof. Chung teaches well enough and tries to make the class entertaining, even if not all his jokes land. He gives the class extra credit opportunities a lot. Homeworks are not graded, but you should do them to learn the content. Exams are more than fair. Taken Spring 2021.
Fun lectures and clear passion for subject. Only grades are the three exams, so make sure to do the homeworks. Is funny, especially for a STEM professor, but uses the same 6 anecdotes all semester. Always simplify C(n,0) to 1 and C(-n,r) to C(n+r+1,r)*(-1)^r.
Best math prof at bu by far. Lectures are entertaining, he makes lots of jokes. Super fair exams that are straight from the homework.
No final, only 3 midterms. He does a lot of examples in class, so the midterms should be fine if you use your lecture notes and hw problems to study.
He has the funniest sense of humor ever I love him so much lol. His quizzes and exams are easy if you study. His lectures are very conceptual rather than just writing down notes, and he gives lots of examples that are similar to test/quiz questions. He will definitely skip over some steps when he's doing math but just ask about it and he'll explain
Extremely easy exams that relate exactly to previous years exams which he reviews. Homework is light, worth 25% and 3 midterms worth 25%, no final. It's a challenge not to get an A or an A- in this class. Linear algebra is covered a lot but not needed to know before this class, I had not taken it.
Loved this professor! He was super funny and class and the exams/quizzes were extremely easy especially if you have taken calc.
As long as you do the textbook problems and understand it, this class will be a breeze. Also Professor Chung goes over sample test and quiz problems the lecture before the test. I used to hate math and sucked at math however, Professor Chung made it very clear what you needed to study for the test and quizzes it was basically a freebie.
This is not a good class if you've never taken calc/didnt have a good teacher in high school. He was at least ten minutes late every lecture and there were 2-3 occasions where he just didn't show up to class. It is apparent that he doesn't really like his job.
Best professor I have had at BU; his lectures are very clear and he always tries to make the lectures entertaining by his jokes that he makes, and he grades fairly. Just do the homework and pay attention in class and you should be fine.
I loved Prof. Chung! He's funny and is clearly passionate about math. Hw isn't mandatory, but def do it and ask questions in office hours because hw questions are what's in the exams. He cares more about you understanding the concept than just memorizing it. Exams are a big part of your grade, but they are curved really leniently.
no!!!!
lectures and quiz are easy, he talks about a lot of unrelated stories. Few office hours, the real test are way harder than you think. If you fully understand the materials, you will do good. If you are not interested in Math and don't want to spend tons of time reading and understanding the materials yourself, take ma225 with someone else.
He brings a lot of humor and enthusiasm into lectures. While his organizational skills are bad, he is still a competent and effective professor. Midterms are more than fair. Some problems came straight from lecture notes. Honestly, I can't think of another math professor who still provides lecture recordings in the post-covid era besides him.
Genuinely the most terribly organized class at BU. Exams are mostly your grade, and are too stylishly inconsistent to consistently do well on. One exam would be exactly like the homework, others would have questions so unlike lecture and hw materials. Chung is a funny guy but is too unorganized and difficult to follow.
Professor is relatively easy depending on the course you take with him. Homeworks are straightforward and he gives you solutions. Tests are based almost directly off the homeworks as well. Don't expect to really learn from him though. He'll give pretty half-assed explanations and teaches thinking everyone is as smart as him.
Professor Chung is awesome. His lectures are interesting, though it is undoubtedly that you need to make efforts on what he has taught after class.
The best thing of Chung is he provides recordings for every single lecture, and I think he gives a final curve to the whole class at the end. Midterms are just lecture notes and HW problems, if you can understand all of them you should be fine. However, be aware of the TA, there are 5 quizzes, and many of us only got 70-75 in average.
This class was okay. Important to go to lecture to understand what's going on, but still a lot of learning outside of class because he teaches concepts unclearly and thinks you simply know what he means. He's all over the place and often late, exams are extremely easy or extremely hard with no in between. Generous grading but extremely unorganized.
His exam is not too difficult but it does take some effort. Class recordings are very helpful.
Very good lecturer. As long as you understand the lectures, the exams will be super easy. He tests on concepts, and is very clear on what the exams will be like.
Professor Chung taught the class well. The lectures might be a bit confusing, so give urself a brief preview of the topic before the upcoming classes so that you can understand better what he says in the class. Tests are really easy and big curves were given so it's easy to get an A when you receive like 80% on the test paper. Big shoutout to him.
Professor Chung's lectures can be a bit confusing, but with some preparation, the class is quite manageable. Exams are challenging but curved, and using resources like the textbook and Unstuckstudy for study prep can really help. Overall, an engaging professor who cares about student understanding.
Five minutes late, Professor Ken Chung arrives, Declares math, science, eng'r the only real drives. “Give blood, sweat, tears or choose poetry instead!” Yet with clear visuals he fills every head. We love how he maps dimensions to our sight— Ken Chung turns tough math into pure delight.
He DOESN'T POST ANY GRADES. I don't know my grades for any of my exams. Now I just took my final exam for his class(exam 3) and i honestly don't know what to expect for my grade in this class. He only handed out the exams in class; if you miss that class, you're done. I emailed him three times, but he never responded.
I truly think he is a W guy. He is sweet. His jokes may get old, but he is experienced smart for sure, but you may not see it unless you talk to him. He is soooo nice with grading. for MA 225, Ungraded homeworks. quizzes every week, those quizzes super easy tho. He cares about your success. just talk to him, hes super sweet. He is open to teach u.
Lectures were engaging clear and helpful if you showed up. He made a lot of the same jokes but he was a joy to take. I would recommend you learn from him when you can. My only complaint about the course was the TA that taught the semi-required discussion blocks was horrible, but that seems out of his control.
I appreciate Chung's focus on understanding over memorisation, and the lecture recordings are an absolute lifesaver. That said, his explanations can be hard to follow, and he can come across as rude. The grading criteria are a bit unclear, but the tests are easy if you do the homework and review the in-class practice exams—they're very similar.
About 60% of the students got a 100 on his first exam. It's very hard not to get an A in his class, and impossible to fail unless you try. That being said, we went over 4 of the 12 planned chapters, and I forgot almost all the material. This is certainly the "easy-way" out professor, but you need to reteach yourself the material once it's over.
He made learning calc 3 enjoyable
Has extra credit but makes the concepts hard to understand sometimes. Not my type of lecture style as he sometimes skips some parts in the math, Test heavy as there are no quizzes or assigned homework for grades. I do appreciate his philosophy of being independent but it is very daunting as a freshman. He is a very funny guy but tends to yap.
Chung is great! Cannot go wrong, keeps tests pretty easy so long as you put in even the slightest bit of effort.
Hillarious guy but I didn't learn that much. Most of lecture is him talking about how important the things we're learning are without really explaining them. Tests aren't necessarily out of the ordinary but a time crunch for a 50 minute block. That being said, he did make me appreciate math more.
Just not great. No homework means you won't get much practice with the content. Rushes through things, exams are much harder than what you do in class, and he isn't funny. The curve is crazy though, I got a C- on the first exam and an B+ on the second (you won't ever know your third exam grade) and I ended with a B+. Don't take unless you have to.
Constantly talked about STEM and economics being the only important fields of study (I'm STEM, but throwing shade at humanities is just childish and lame). He tries to make this class seem intimidating, but it's not. It's three midterms (no hw, no discussion quiz, no final) and if you study you'll pass. I skipped most lectures and will get an A.
He is a rude person(at least in email).
Very entertaining, but hard to follow sometimes. I liked his attitude towards math and life in general.
100% of the grade was 3 tests. nothing else no other way to improve your grade other than tests. He tries to avoid as much work as possible and held the final before finals week. He's a decent person, but is not a responsible teacher for all students. He is an inspiring teacher at times though and funny.
Overall Chung runs a pretty disorganized class and your grade being based on only 15 total questions for the entire semester can be frustrating at times. However he curves well.
The Absolute Goat. Most entertaining lectures ever, great at explaining difficult concepts. Tests were unbelievably easy and class was curved. Only downside was that the class was very disorganized. He had to kind of really rush through content at the end to get through it all, left me a bit confused. It's fine because the exams are so easy though.
do NOT take this class. he is so disorganized, and you never know what to study for the tests. he will always talk bad about different majors and it is so weird. please take any other professor you will be so lucky
I would never take a class again with this professor. Aside from being a bad teacher, he is also extremely disrespectful. I went to every lecture, emailed him, and made efforts to talk to him, but he was still EXTREMELY rude to me. I even got good grades on the exams and did all of the extra credit. Just a cold professor generally.
If you are naturally good at math take Ken Chung 1000% because he is hilarious and his lectures are entertaining. This guy is definitely an experience with crazy takes and out of pocket humor. If you do struggle with math do NOT take this class as the grade is very dependent on only three small exams. He does however give out lots of extra credit.
He zooms through steps and even skips concepts that are on the exam, so get ready to teach yourself the textbook. Funny but rude over email and shames you for "dumb" questions. First test was unfair, but the next two were really easy, so exam difficulty is kind of luck depending on semester I guess. Curves and easy to 100% hw and quizzes tho.
Ken Chung is amazing! My favorite professor in the math department! I only went to like half the lectures and watched his recordings for the others, but his lectures were always really funny and good. Prompt with replying to emails and supportive at office hours. Entire grade is 3 exams but a lot of questions were almost verbatim from lectures.
I didn't find his lectures to be good or entertaining. After the first few weeks, I ended up just not going to class and self studied my way through. He's not nice over email and is always disorganized (messed up the printing for one of the tests and I lost 15 minutes).
Enough said
