CHM1106 too. As long as you show improvement he'll pass you. Show up to office hours, email him. Very reasonable teacher. May not be the best, but definately not the worst.
Chung is the best. He's so engaging and knowledgeable in ALL fields (he now teaches organic and taught math at Harvard). REALLY smart guy. Talk to him after class. He'll get to know you and be more likely to sway your way. Give him a chance! I had a great experience!

He is awesome. He wants you to do well and learn the information. Makes time available for the students. Highly recommend him, especially for organic chemistry!
i love this professor. He's the best. He's clear and very helpful and fair
Most enjoyable teacher I've ever had.Only teaches what you need to know and keeps class interesting, which is not something common at NU.I've never laughed so much in any class, let alone chemistry!Wish I could take every subject with this guy.Do suggested problems and you're guaranteed an A or B.
He kept things interesting by telling lots of antedotes and was always willing to help. He also made sure that the grades of the class were in the A/B range for all of those who showed that they worked for it.
One of the top 3 professor's i've had at Northeastern. Very clear, very helpful. Teaches Organic in a way everyone can understand. Great guy who tries to be funny and you can't help but laugh at the attempt :)
He actually makes it easy to understand organic chemistry....well not easy, but manageable. He makes jokes throughout the class and lets you know what examples are going to be on the tests so there are no surprises
Started off as best teacher but became the worst towards the last 1/4 of the semester. In the beginning he was great, put things in a way you could relate to. At the end it seemed like he stopped caring. The material also gets much harder. In class open-book quiz answers are all from solutions manual ;)
Very funny and does the best he can to give everyone a good grade.
Chung is such an awesome teacher; the best I have had so far. The material is hard but he is so funny, and it is a releif to have a teacher so passionate. He is such a funny guy, and I like going to class. He tells the greatest stories and is one of the few professors that you can tell actually wants to be there.
Not a bad teacher, but he tends to rush through things if nobody asks questions. He has a funny personality though. The course is very helpful for exam reviews.
Chung is a great guy. You'll laugh every day of class, I promise. If you know some basic chemistry, he makes it easy go get the harder stuff. Be amazed at his chalk-board skills.
He definately knew his material, and was avaiable for questions. Not a signle thing that we went over in class was on the exams. The tests were among the most difficult of my life. hes funny, but not very nice out of class.
Chung is the man. Organic chemistry is hard and he definitely understands that. Towards the end of the semester he tends to be more difficult becuase he wants to get through the material. But, he's funny! If you go to class, and use the book, the class is fair.
Kenny Chung is a great guy, but the material is difficult to understand if a)u arent listening and b)if u just dont get it. Hes helpful for the most part. A lot of the stuff he goes over in class isn't on the test, so make sure you know how to do the practice problems in the text book. The text book/answer key book will become your best friend.
The man. Good teacher, really smart. Tests are very challenging, have to study hard to do well. Based off both the notes and the book. he is the man though.
Great prof, I had him in the summer so it was really laid back and relaxed. He's a funny guy who clearly explains topics and writes everything on the board. He doesn't grade to hard and doesn't proof read his tests so you'll usually end up getting a few gimmes on every test. Do your work and its an easy A.
Took this class in the summer. It was a lot of material crammed into a short amount of time but chung made it pretty easy to understand. His tests were not very hard. If you study the book you will get an A.
Professor Chung is great. His class is always interesting, though he may get sidetracked sometimes it's nothing too distracting and he usually always get side tracked by something really interesting. He's also kinda funny sometimes. Chung's class is always a good time.
He is very silly, nice, and helpful but is horrible at teaching. Just kind of goofs around during class time and a lot of the material in class doesn't really show up in the exams. The homework is somewhat helpful.
Ken Chung is a good guy and really wants his students to do well, but I really struggled in his class. Going to class never really helped me because he tends to go on tangents. I think he means well but is slightly overrated.
I had Ken Chung for CHM 101 and CHM 104. 101 was a complete joke, and if you put in a little effort you got an A. Chem 104 was a lot harder and you actually had to go to class. He isn't that great of a teacher as he jumps all over the place, but if you do the problems in the book, you will do fine
Wicked easy class. Lectures are so good, take down all notes. Its so easy to follow. I didnt read a single page of the text book, fell asleep in class (but still got all his notes) and got an A in the class. His lectures show step by step how to solve problems. Great guy, with funny jokes.
LOVE THIS MAN! Such an easy class. Just read the book and do the homework, and you'll get an A.
doesn't explain anything. you will fail.
Doesn't explain anything. Going to class only confuses you more. Taught myself everything with the practice problems in the textbook. It was brutal and it was an intro class. Get a different teacher if you can!
Ken Chung is a legond! If you actually study you can get an A, his powerpoint and test questiones are copied right from the book. If you don't go to class read the book, if you do go to class all you need to do is a few practice problems that he tells you to.
LOVE Professor Chung! His lectures are extremely easy to understand since he draws everything out on the board. Doesn't make you memorize anything and says he'll even tell you unit conversions or any equations while taking the test. My interest in Chemistry has increased immensely after taking his class.
Very good prof. To get a good grade in his class you need : 1. Have taken IB or AP (then it's super easy) If you haven't taken APIB , then : 2. Read the book 3. DO THE HOMEWORK!!! - all the questions on tests are from the homework In other words, he isn't a hard teacher, pretty good at lectures . If you do the HW , you will get an A .
chung was a good professor, his lectures can get off topic and you wont do well on his exams if you just study off the lectures. do homework and go to recitation and you will do well
If you were good at high school chem and remember it, then this class should be a breeze. You don't even have to go to class, just do the practice problems and you'll be fine. If chem was never really your thing, then Ken isn't that great. He teaches concepts well, but he goes off on tangents often and speeds through actual chem problems in class.
Pretty easy as long as you do the homework. Homework isn't collected or graded, but all the tests have very similar questions. Lectures a bit helpful, but if you still remember high school chemistry it's basically the same thing anyway.
Ken is a good guy and can be funny. He likes to compare the concepts with real world examples, BUT, that is where the good ends and the bad begins. This is supposed to be an ENTRY LEVEL CHEM course. He does not teach entry level Chemistry, he assumes that you know basic and not-so basic chemistry. Well what if you took Chemistry 10 years ago. Poor.
If you come to Chung's classes, pay attention, and do the homework you'll do well. He's an enjoyable and funny professor.
My main man ken chung. He is ridiculous but you have to embrace it. I hadn't taken chemistry since sophomore year of hs (not AP) and the class was easy. He knows you're only there for the credit, so he scales a lot. Definitely do not worry about your grade, just show up for the performance.
He is a wonderful goofy person but as a professor he could use improvements. You take 3 tests and thats it. His lectures tend to be useless and he goes off on story telling often. I would not say the material is hard but because of the lack of helpful lecturing I find that a few days before the test everyone teaches themselves the material.
ken Chung is so nice & funny. sometimes he gets off topic, as most of his teaching is done through examples. his tests are kind of hard but he scales the grades. he helps the class out tho & always answers questions or reviews a lot if a lot of people are confused. sometimes he may assume you know things so ask questions or ask for help. great guy
Grade was determined by three tests. He curves. I may be biased because I like chemistry but the class wasnt terribly hard. Even though he doesn't take attendance go to lectures they are very helpful. The textbook is good for clarifying concepts. Dont buy the new edition, just get the cheaper 8th edition.
Chung is not a great professor. He has a really specific style that may be good for some but I found I difficult. Rather than teaching in a manner that explains the content, he teaches how to solve problems. Youre graded on 3 toUgh 20Q multiple choice exams. He scales a lot but that doesnt mean you know the material which you need for orgo 2
I had Ken Chung for orgo and loved him. He knows the material is hard and knows how to break it down so that you can understand it. His practice tests are very helpful for the exams and he reviews a lot. Grade is only made up of 3 exams, but he curves them nicely. He is HILARIOUS and I enjoyed his lectures
I had Ken for general chem for health science majors and loved it. Thought it was pretty easy considering the majority of topics were covered in my high school chem class. He teaches mostly through example problems, so if that's not your style there's many khan academy videos I found helpful. If you go to class, you don't really need the textbook.
Ken Chung was an amazing professor. He taught in a way that was understandable to people who hadn't ever taken Orgo. He also was always able to make us laugh. By far one of my favorite professors ever.
Overall, Ken is an alright professor. He teaches the material mainly through example problems so you'll have to do a bit of self studying. I definitely enjoyed class as he often likes to crack jokes. The exams really aren't too difficult as long as you keep up with his constant example problems, and they're curved really nicely.
A lot of self-studying is definitely necessary, but he tries and is very funny. Tests are much easier than other professors.
He usually teaches by doing one or two practice problems as a class, and then the rest is on you to teach yourself using the textbook problems he gives you. If you keep up with your work outside of class then you'll be able to understand the information enough to do well on his tests, which are the only thing he grades you on.
Wonderful at explaining complicated concepts. Dr Chung made Organic chem fun and understandable. There is no office hours, however. The best way to succeed is attend lectures and do the hmk.
Lectures provide the basic information but it is up to the student to read and do all of the practice problems if you want to do well. He often makes mistakes in his answer keys so compare your test with friends to make sure that you were graded correctly and consistently. He will not catch these mistakes himself. Also he gives minimal feedback.
There were only 2 midterms and an optional final exam, so this class is really graded by few things. The tests are very doable as long as you pay attention in lectures and take good notes. Chung has an amazing personality and keeps you entertained during lectures. Although he goes on tangents often, he explains complicated concepts very well.
Ken is a funny guy, but cannot teach. He expects you to come in knowing a lot of material. The majority of class is him doing problem examples and racing through content. 3 tests (no final), curved but hard. Even though it is not required, get and read the textbook, it will help for studying the material that is on the test but not covered.
He seems to be a nice guy and can be funny but it seems like he goes on tangents. You are graded on 3 exams and there's no finals so if you're a bad test taker like me, don't take his class. He has no office hours and provides minimal feedback. They say if you do the practice problems, you'll be fine but that's not always true
Prof. Chung was funny in class and showed that he was on our side when grading tests. It would've been helpful to have something else in our grade as it only depended on 3 exam grades (all curved). Doing practice problems on the side helps enforce what is being taught.
Prof Chung does not have any structure to his presentations. He just draws on a whiteboard and kind of goes on tangents. He does not use slide presentations or anything which is kind of confusing b/c we sometimes dont know what exactly we are studying. He is a funny guy but doesnt make up for his teaching!
I thought Kenny boi was so good at teaching he really taught me to expand me mind and he made my eyes open to the world. Truly an inspiration
Chung is a really good professor. Although he doesn't use slides, which would be nice for organizational purposes, I think that the way he teaches is effective. As long as you pay attention/take notes in class, do the practice problems assigned, and ask him questions you have, you'll be fine. 3 tests 1 final. 4 quizzes are only added if boost grade
My review is not the result of "not wanting to work hard", I spent over 10hrs a week (outside of class) reading the text/doing problems. Didn't help. Exams are all MC, no room for error/partial credit. Students are told on day 1 they should be learning from the text not the lectures. I gave it my best effort, still never passed an exam. Worst prof.
The classes basically consist of him ranting at the board (no slides). If you stop paying attention for 5 minutes, you will be lost and it'll be hard to catch back up. The whole grade consists of 3 midterm exams and a final, with 4 quizzes included in the grade if it increases it. The exam questions come from the textbook though which is good.
His lectures were him scribbling reactions onto the whiteboard, and there were no presentations online for us to look back on. We were never taught anything conceptual, just thrown problems and expected to understand what was going on. Did not prepare me for orgo 2 whatsoever.
Professor Chung is decent. His lectures are simply him writing on the whiteboard showing examples. In order to understand what happens during his class, you have to read the textbook and do the textbook questions he posts. He does not require HW, but the only way to succeed in his class is to do the textbook and use his lectures as supplements.
Professor Chung has a teaching style that does not work for most people. The class was weighted only on 4 tests and some quizzes. The only prep for these tests were questions from the textbook. I spent hours doing those practice problems, but there was simply too much info and not enough help/clarification to make this class manageable.
Ken Chung's teaching style only works for a select few students, as he doesn't provide lecture notes or powerpoint slides, but rather writes random problems on the whiteboard. The grades are based on 3 midterms and a final, with problems that are too difficult or time-consuming. Everyone failed the tests, only form of studying is the book.
Very disorganized and doesn't prepare any slides. He simply does a bunch of random problems on the board in class and spends a lot of time on the easy stuff while leaving the complex concepts for you to understand on your own. The class is graded on three very difficult exams and one final. He also gave one of the midterms a week before our final.
He had a great spirit but all he did was practice problems on the board. he began the semester telling us to make the textbook our #1 priority and to do all the practice problems. Id often leave his lectures learning nothing or leaving more confused. As long as you devote almost all your free time to doing practice problems you should be fine.
Professor Chung really cares for the student. Lectures are straight from textbook, so definitely want to do optional practice problems. He teaches with no slides (not great), so just pay attention in class w/ good notes. Even met with me and my classmates outside office hours. Lots of effort required, but he's supportive if you ask for help.
Ken was a good professor who really wants to teach the class in a funny way. However, his class pace is so fast that almost no one can follow his track. He used to finish only one difficult chapter even in a 2-hour class.
Most of your grade will be based off of three tests that he will provide practice preparation for. Its recommended to do the optional textbook problems in order to ensure all your bases are covered. The class environment created by Professor Chung is exceptional and is very entertaining.
Only graded on three exams total, though he is VERY generous with the curve for grades below an A. For this course, taking notes in lectures helps but more importantly do the practice problems in the textbook. Working through those problems was the only way I really learned, otherwise the recitation really helps if you still need more help.
Would not recommend Ken Chung. Four quizzes are worth 60% of your grade and there are only four questions each on each quiz meaning if you get 1 question wrong you automatically get a C. Do not take his class if you do not test well.
If you took AP Chem you will be extremely prepared -- this course was an easier version of AP chem for me. I never showed up for class and just came to take the exams. I prepared by really studying the practice exams. He only made us take 3 exams, curved them a lot tho. Super kind teacher and funny. I ended with a 100% by doing very little work.
Professor Chung is not only a great professor but a funny and caring person. He definitely cares about his students. The curves for the tests are very generous and the practice exams he gives out are super helpful in studying. You can obtain an A in this class if you use the resources he provides and by going to office hours.
He's amazing for a chem professor. The grade depends on 3 tests. There is a curve but it is applied at the end of the semester. He uses downloadable PowerPoint slides and follows them pretty well, however, there were a couple of topics that were covered that weren't on the slides. He explains concepts very thoroughly so they are easy to understand.
Lectures are long but he keeps you entertained while also explaining concepts. Explains concepts through lots of examples. Tests are hard but the quizzes beforehand are a good indicator of what you know. He wants his students to learn but seems fed up with his job. I liked him but I know a lot of people who had a lot of complaints about his class.
Has a very unclear grading system. Whenever asked, he will beat around the bush. Says that he has "4 different grading systems" and will grade based on what system will give you the highest grade. What are these grading systems? I could not tell you. He expects you to know the concept, so if you did not take AP Chem, you may be lost. Easy class.
Took his general chemistry course during the Summer I semester. He tends to go a bit off topic throughout his lectures but other than that is a good teacher. He uses analogies and real life examples for topics which helps students make real connections. Pretty easy grader and tends to curve
Was good for gen chem, sometimes goes off topic during lectures but still makes the lectures easy to understand and follow. geniunely wants students to pass the class and curves really generously.
He was funny HOWEVER this man just cannot teach. He lectures in a way that he assumes we already know the content. Grades are quite literally made up of 3 exams but he's lenient with the grading system so thats a plus. There's no way to take this class to truly learn and comprehend Chemistry its literally just to pass and move on.
If you took regular chem in hs (not ap chem) and had a basic understanding of it, you will be fine. This class is incredibly hard to fail as he curves the grade drastically. He is not the best at explaining topics and the lab often goes ahead of what is taught in lecture. They made the recitation mandatory, but it is basically a waste of time.
Very nice professor, but explains things very quickly so it is hard to build a strong foundation. Concepts can be difficult at times too. Curves generously so you do not have to be very worried about your grade. Cares that you learn.
I enjoyed orgo with Prof Chung. I thought his lectures tended to be confusing at times and it was hard to get in touch outside of class, but his exams were pretty straightforward as long as you read the textbook and did homework. It was easy to get a good grade since he curves at the end of the semester and his coursework was pretty chill.
Funniest guy i have ever met in my life as a student. He is passionate about what he is teaching. He is knowledgeable and always come to lecture prepared beforehand. Inspire students to continue the study of organic chemistry. Love him. It is so great to have him as my organic chemistry teacher. Definitely recommended!
Really funny guy. Class is not mandatory, but you should probably go it'll help you learn. He's super unserious and moves kinda fast. However, if you have taken chem in high school you'll be fine. Recitation is basically optional. Only a few tests and they're multiple choice 20 questions and based on the practice problems. Overall good guy and prof
He did not have slides and often went on tangents. Very interesting guy and funny, but I did not learn anything. His practice exams are the actual exams with maybe one or two questions changed. Good GPA boost, but if you plan on taking more chem classes with a different professor you will struggle.
Chung may come off as a bad professor at first--his life is a little over the place. But he tries his best and in the end everything works out he is very nice with grading (good scale and takes off some questions in the final to give us more time). Give him a chance, but I would not take a class you actually really need to learn something with him.
funny but highly unorganized. Didn't have a syllabus the first day of class. Grades were just the 3 tests, but I don't think he follows them when giving letter grades. I learn things, but not sure if it was everything we were supposed to learn. Gets really into the math and derivations. People who were always in class + participated saw grade bumps
PLEASE take Ken Chung. He is the sweetest and most relatable professor ever. At first it may seem like he does not know how to teach and a little disorganized, but if you show up to ever class and genuinely show him that you are trying to put in effort, he WILL make sure you succeed. Trust me on this one, do not give up on him.
I really liked Professor Chung's class. His teaching style was a little difficult for me to get used to, but if you attend his class regularly and participate you learn a lot from him and he'll be generous with grading. He does seem to be very busy but he tries his best to make time for you if you need help outside of class.
He has an interesting teaching style which can be hard to follow, you honestly won't learn a lot in his class but he is very funny and keeps students engaged. The miderms were basically just practice problems and your grade gets boosted.
Genuinely, Professor Chung is such a nice guy, prone to go on funny side quests mid lecture, but he 100% cares about his students learning. If you supplement lectures with reading the textbook, and DOING THE PRACTICE TESTS, you will get a good grade. He will definitely hit you with a nice curve at the end of the year as well.
Professor Chung is a very funny guy. He always makes students laugh during the lectures. The class is very lecture heavy and is good if you have taken IB Chemistry or AP Chemistry prior, if you haven't, you may struggle a bit due to the fast pacing. He is very caring and will do his best to help you when you're having a hard time with something.
He was funny in a weird awkward not really funny but funny way. I don't think I learned a thing tbh but if you read the textbook you'll manage. Idk if he still does this but for our class our homework was hella extra credit and he curves sometimes on his quizzes. But I've heard recently that he no longer curves lollll
Chung has a bad rep but is genuinely the best chem professor at NU. He is passionate, funny, and very smart. He actually explains the material. Your grade in the class is entirely based on midterms and the final exam but he is generous with extra credit during class. He records his lectures but it is worth going to class.
ur graded by 4 exams all of which are ridiculously hard/bad. He constantly is complaining about how students do not care/how traumatized he is and yet makes no effort to be a better professor/lectures were awful. TAKE 2313 WITH LITERALLY ANYONE ELSE I PROMISE YOU WILL NOT PASS BECAUSE OF HIS CLASS SET UP. u bomb one exam and its over actually
While he has passion for chemistry, he is a not a chemistry teacher. Your grade is completely dependent on 4 exams and the final exam with no chance for corrections or extra credit. His lectures can feel like an eternity as he tends to distract himself and ramble on unimportant things. Only take if you're confident in teaching yourself chemistry.
Orgo 2 is a hard class and no matter who you take, you NEED to put in work OUTSIDE of class. Prof Chung is enthusiastic, tries to be funny, and a good lecturer but is a little unorganized. Exams are based off practice problems. Read the textbook, be willing to learn and you'll be fine. He has a great curve and wants you to succeed, as long as u do
If you can NOT teach yourself chemistry, do not take him! He never explained anything and assumes you already know everything. I had to drop the course because I failed every exam (even though I previously passed orgo 1 with an A-). READ: I asked him what I can do to bring my grade up and he said "just pass the final exam." He was so rude!
Reading the textbook before class is very helpful. He's not gonna hand out free A's to everyone for no reason. If you do the practice problems (which are very very similar to the exam, sometimes the exact same), you'll be fine. + great curve around 20%! The low reviews on this page are from people who do no work and expect an A. Skill issue.
Professor Chung is a great teacher and a great person. He always tries to be accessible outside of class for his students, and will help you as long as you are willing to put the work in and learn the material. I took both Organic Chemistry I and II with him, and really enjoyed both courses. He also curves final grades (although tests are hard).
Ken Chung is a wild card if you take him. He's pretty unpredictable. His grading is set up in a helpful way where an 80 is an A, a 70 is a B, 60 is C and so on so forth. But, his exams are almost impossible. He doesn't give you the structures and just gives you their names. If you fail more than 2 exams, you're done. Take him cautiously.
He is funny but prepare to hear the same joke repeated every single class & he is kind. He allows for extra credit opportunities in class like "solve this problem for 5 points added to last exam". One of my friends literally failed the first exam and still got an A. If you're taking the class to actually learn organic chemistry II... good luck!
Ken chung is amazing. Not only is he funny, but it's clear that he cares about his students. He makes a ton of funny jokes and gives many extra credit opportunities if you pay attention in class. Just do the practice exams and the tests will be super clear. People who rated him bad are lazy.
Ken Chung is the goat. He is willing to go above and beyond for his students, hosting office hours at 8pm from home and almost everyday on exam weeks even with his busy schedule. If you listen to him in class and do his practice problems you will succeed. He is like a dad in the best way possible and a comedian at heart.
Ken Chung is super smart and funny. His lectures can be a bit confusing, but he provides lots of context and gives extra help before exams. He gives out random 5 point extra credits during the semester. Also he has the most out of pocket jokes. GO TO CLASS, do his review problems, and you will pass. The exams are straightforward. Ken's a goat.
He's very funny and passionate about chemistry and science overall, often incorporating his philosophical interpretations of the stars and human existence into his lectures. His slides are very informational and his exams are very manageable (usually all multiple choice).
Learned absolutely nothing during this class. He teaches poorly and never stays on topic, but it's an easy GPA booster, wouldn't recommend for general chemistry because I literally know NOTHING.
Overall, no major complaints. Dr. Chung is kind, and doesn't want to make it a stressful class. But, he often read directly from slides, arrived 10-15 min late, and went off topic A LOT. Exams closely match practice problems, so it's easy to get an A. Exams are only 20 MC, no open response unlike all the other gen chem classes which made it easier
Prof Chung was passionate about chemistry and funny, but not the best lecturer. Some of his explanations were unclear and he would overcomplicate simple concepts. However, I liked how he emphasized understanding over memorization. Exams were easy, 20 MCQ each and very similar to practice problems. A good high school chem foundation is very helpful.
Overall, solid class. Professor tends to go off topic, but as long as you attend class you'll understand the foundational material. Exams were similar to practice problems, and only 20 MCQ, meaning if you had a reasonable understanding of the units you did well. Attend class and go to his office hours for extra help, and you'll do good.
If you actually want to learn, do not take Prof. Chung. He is a sweet man and means well, but he is a very poor lecturer. He is not good at responding to emails, and if you ask him a question, he never gives you a solid answer. Tests are 20 MCQs that are pretty straightforward, but if you have one bad one, it can really mess with your final grade.
