He contradicts himself in lecture and doesn't hear his own (many) mistakes. He doesn't give back homework at all (nor the grades) and doesn't give back quizzes (or grades) for weeks. He calls on students at random to answer questions and is quick to say "no, that's not right" so that can be very discouraging. Plan to do a lot of self-teaching.
The class material is difficult but professor taught me how to think about what I was studying. He was very knowledgeable and went out of his way to help students. He tells you from day one what he expects. Don't put in the effort you will not pass. Got a B- in the class, but learned more than other classes where I got an A. Excellent Class.
Professor Curr is a genuinely nice guy who is very approachable, however,he teaches very poorly. His tests are extremely diffcult and expects you to know every single detail about the book. He teaches Bio 1401 as if it were a Graduate class. It is only a freshman level class, but it certainly does not feel that way.
A very difficult professor, sure he can be nice when you talk to him outside of class, however, when in his class and listening to his lectures, he goes off on tangents, is very difficult to follow, and is unapproachable. His tests are difficult, and he gives quizzes at the most inopportune times.
Professor Curr is a very knowledgeable teacher and ready to help anytime; however, his expectations are pretty high in general. Get ready to study a lot; he expects students to understand materials deeply at their concept. His class was quite a challenge. He also likes unexpected quizzes.
Knows what he is talking about. You have to study, a lot. Always available to help. Makes you think, unlike other profs. Exams very challenging. Exams are from lecture, but I found 90% of the info in the book. He tells you exactly how to pass the class. I went to office hours and e-mailed ques. Got an A-. Needs to speak louder though.
If you love to stuggle, this is the teacher for you. This guy should be teaching graduate level classes. He is truely an aweful teacher.I have taken hard professors before and learned alot (example-Baysdorfer),but this guy needs to learn how to be more comprehensable. Furthermore, the book sucks. All questions on his test are experimental.
Dr. Curr is a very down to earth and respectable professor. CSUEB is lucky to have a quality instructor like him. Others may complain that he is hard, but he is fair, grades fair, and will go out of his way to make sure you understand what is required. He is clear, and practically tells you what will be on the exam. He is also very personable
I have had him for four classes now. A tough instructor, but knows what he is talking about. Had to listen to seminars and write summaries about them. He really helped me with my science writing, especially during office hours. I would recommend the class.
This class was AWESOME! I loved this class. He doesn't use a text book, but his exams are based on the lectures. No memorization all questions based on understanding the material. He is always available, even outside his office hours, as I could never make his scheduled hours. Exams tough but fair. Totally recommend class.
Really enjoyed the class. Professor very knowledgeable and helpful. You have to put the time in in though. People in my study group didn't and couldn't figure out why they did poorly. He makes it interesting by talking about actual diseases plus lecturing on epidemiology. Totally recommend the course.
I was in his 1401 lab during Fall, he was soo scattered It was unbelievable made no sense of the subject, this is a lower division class with no pre-reqs but he made it clear that we should know what he was explaining. Do Not take him for this class ever!! his teaching skills are highly questionable.
Had him for 1401 lab & just finished his genetics class. He's hard but you learn the concepts. 1401 you have to listen to his lectures, all his quizzes are exactly from his lecture. Genetics is a lot tougher. Go to his office hours or e-mail him. He works your ass off, but is one of the best in biology. Totally disagree with previous entry.
When you read comments on here that say his teaching methods are "questionable," it's probably because that person didn't put the necessary effort into the course and thus got a poor grade. Dr. Curr demands a lot from his students but if you MAKE THE EFFORT, you LEARN.
This class rocks!! Very Challenging. A funny guy who knows his subject (Viruses). Exams were hard, makes you seriously think about the concepts. I wish there was a part 2 to the class. Gotta know genetics though or you will not do well. Always stayed like an hour after class to help out on difficult concepts. Totally recommend course. Text Sucked!
I really liked Dr. Curr. The first class he tells you exactly what he expects. The class is curved. Exams are challenging but fair. People say he is really hard, but I paid a lot of money for my classes and I want to go to medical school. I feel he really prepared me for the MCATs and my upper division classes. I will take him again.
This class helped me a lot. You write summaries on a weekly speaker. Thought I was a good writer until this class. His edits are tough and papers bleed ink, but I am better at taking notes and writing a paper. He was tough, but fair. Is very helpful if you talk with him, which if you do you'll probably get an A in the course. Me and a friend did.
Writing this before I get my grade. This class Rocked!! Definitely hard, but he made a dry subject interesting and fun. Tests are difficult he doesn't like memorizing. He always stayed after class to help out. Loved the fact he talked about diseases and brought in the epi. I reccomend the class, but you will have to really study for your grade.
His lectures aren't very well organized, so you end up with a lot of information that doesn't seem to connect. However, he is an extremely helpful professor and if you stay after class he will answer any questions. Bring a recording device because he lectures quickly. His tests are pretty hard, he makes you think about what you've learned.
I wasn't expecting much from the class, but found I really enjoyed the class. I enjoyed the lectures, it was the text that was a hard read. He is a really fun guy to listen too. Exams were tough, but I learned a lot. He is so helpful. He stays after class and works around office hours to meet with you. I recommend the course and the instructor.
Over half the class is failing.
He's a tough to weed out the weak. If you dont understand his teaching, you should be an adult and ask. Get over yourself. To the comment below... speak for yourself.. from what I know, there's only 2 people failing his class.
This class was so tough, but I learned so much. He tells you what it takes to be successful and treats you like your adult. Our class was very immature and he commented on it. I paid a lot of money for the class and don't need a lot children who don't want to be there. I will take him again. Go see him in office hours boosted my grade from C to B
I LOVED this class. Some of my fellow peers were the problem. Instead of learning the information they ****ed that it was too hard. Evolution is more than Darwin and I loved the Mol/Cell approach. I would recommend this course to any one REALLY interest in genetics & evolution. Exams were challenging & fair. Bio text sucked, jungle text great.
Weather or not you should take this professor is up to you. if you want a challenge and to be guaranteed to know the material (completely) by the end of term, but may be not get an A TAKE HIM. If you want an easy A this man is going to own your ass. I took him and loved his class it was fun and interesting, plus I got an A so it's not impossible.
I agree he is not for someone who just needs to take the class. If your not there to learn you will sink. I went into science undecided about what I want to do. I recommend him for the serious students. I will be taking him again in the future for sure. For the record I got a B+. If you can take Nieto for lab. Curr and Nieto Rock!
I've taken many classes with Dr Curr and this was the most disorganized. Easy pace in the beginning, but gave tons of work last minute, added lots of stress on us. Many experiments were not successful for most of the class due to him making changes in the protocol. The teacher wasn't in lab most of time and held office hours during lab.
I got a lot out of the class and I credit dr. Curr with helping get a job at LBL where I use cell culture. The techniques learned in class are ones I use at work. I did not find him unorganized, lectures went with labs. I think it's the way that labs are structured that made it a lot of work. Several exp. are going on at once. Can't be helped.
I loved his Immunology class. Course is very, very hard, but so is the subject. Best to listen to his lectures and use book as supplement. He tries to make sure you understand before moving on but most people remain silent. His questions make you think instead of asking you to put down memorized facts. That is what I liked about the course.
Took Dr. Curr for last year and the class was really challenging. You can't just memorize things but you have to be able to understand the concepts because a lot of questions that he asks on tests/quizes are mostly conceptual questions. If you don't read before the lecture, you will be VERY lost!
Was a difficult course, but Curr made it interesting. Really cares if you understand the material. Has weekly quizzes to make sure your up to date. Is an easy going guy with a great sense of humor. I had him for 1401 and he was great there too. Don't get me wrong you work your ass off, but you learn alot. I am writing this before I get my grade.
I honestly thought quizzes were much harder than midterms and the final, but this guy makes you work your butt of. I got a B- in the class but it's because I learned all the material days before the exam.
Really, really amazing teacher. Learned SO much, I really wish the quarter never ended. I truly feel all that I've learned will be carried to professional school. There are always quizzes a week before midterms, which is actually helpful and helps you start your studying. Lectures may be confusing at first, but he is ALWAYS available for questions!
If you take this class as your first science class ever, this will be the worst possible choice ever, but I learned a lot! I studied soooo much and in the end learned a lot without knowing it.
Attendance is not strictly mandatory in his genetics class, but I can't imagine doing well without it. This class helped me enormously in my 1st yr med school genetics class. Take Curr's classes. Expect to work hard and learn a lot.
A tough subject & course. Spent hrs studying. Curr and Nieto are remarkable instructors. He is detailed oriented, but you really understand concepts, exams can be a killer, but doable (and kinda fun). She is great and loud. She is passionate and crystal clear. Exams tough, straightforward. Team taught so only 2 quiz and 2 exams. No room for error
Good professor! Hard class but he made it very interesting to say the least. You are expecting to really study the material and understand it since his tests are not base on memorization but applying the knowledges for certain experiments and situations. Overall, a very smart guy who try hard to get you to understand the course for the long run.
Not like 1403 at all, much much harder, but you really really learn a lot. It was like being in a discovery channel documentary. A great guy, a lot of fun, great lecturer. Attendance is mandatory as he adds information not in the book. His tests are mostly conceptual based, unlike 1403 not much memorization involved. I would take him again.
He's a very encouraging instructor and he forces you to learn the material. Mostly due to the tests which demand a thorough understanding of the material and the application of critical thinking based on that understanding. If you want to impress urself w/ what you can do sign up for Curr. He promises that he won't let u fail if you try ur BEST.
Wouldn't take w/o a co-instructor. The other instr.'s exam balances your grade. Don't assume you'll get an A if you study. You need to understand his weird experimental questions like a PhD student. He wants you to do well! This class will eat up your study time and stress you. He will put you on the spot in class.Still a cool guy though. Funny too
Took for Virology and Immuno. True he's a tough one, but if you really want to learn the material and I mean learn the material then take him. Exams are hard, but fair after he goes over them you can see they were pretty straight forward. Extremly nice guy and very very helpful He's funny makes lectures fun. Does ask questions of us so keep awake.
I didn't know you could take Dr. Curr with a co-instructor? I had him for Wint. Qtr. and he is tough, but what a great guy. I think people don't do well because they don't go to him for help. I went several times to off. hours and went from a 56 on the first exam into the upper 80's for 2nd exam and final. I will take him again for sure.
if you have a great understanding of the material, the course isn't too difficult and you can get an A. With that said, I wish he was a little down to earth, understanding of students and helpful
A thoughtful instructor. Very helpful, knows his subject. Tests are tough, but fair. Took the class despite people telling me not to as he is very tough. yet, I learned a lot from his class. He is very entertaining. Need to go to class, his ppts are basically images that he talks about. Taking him for virology this fall if that says anything
The class was tough. Dr. Curr was tough. The exams were tough. A lot of work, but worth it. One of the best classes I've taken at East Bay.
Dr. Curr has a reputation as being one of the hardest professors for good reason. His lectures seem to trail off a lot and he picks out students to answer questions. However, he is never condescending and is always extremely helpful/knowledgeable. His tests require a lot of critical thinking. He typically curves so there's hope for the hopeless.
Finally got my moneys worth from a class. Was always challenged in class and on exams. very helpful and his humor makes the course fun. If you're just taking the class to fulfill an elective probably not the course to take, but if you need to really learn the material then this is the guy. I say take him.
I have absolutely nothing negative to say about this professor he's nothing but a pot of gold he's awesome he's nice he is helpful and you have to earn your grade. Don't expect anything for free from him he will make you work for it.
He's the greatest. He knows the subject very well and will help you understand it. You have to work very hard and all of his classes but do when the quarter is over you will know the topic better than anyone. He is awesome. Very funny too.
This class was so hard, but so worth it. I actually did better than I thought, probably due to the curve. Dr. Curr loves calling on students, but his sense of humor makes you feel at ease. When he found out I wanted to go into forensics he really helped me out with great advice. Exams are tough, but fair. I recommend this class with Dr. Curr.
The moron below deserved to fail, admitting they never went to class and could not pass the quizzes pretty much sums that up. The class was hard, but fair as were the exams. He told you how to pass the course from the first day and he was always available to meet with students. His choice of TA's was great (I had Kaushi). I would take him again.
He's a very tough teacher - he likes to make you think. I struggled for the entirety of his Genetics class. His exams are rough and it will take you 2-3 hrs to finish it. I surprisingly got a B in his class and it was the hardest Bio class I've ever taken, but I breezed through Biochem just because of my Genetics class with Dr. Curr.
I'm on here just to give him a jalapeno!
His class is not for slackers. If you take his class, you WILL become an expert on the subject. It's a lot of work but in the end you feel like a boss. No teacher I've ever had is as challenging as him. Never have I felt so rewarded for earning an A.
Dr. Curr is great. He is challenging, no doubt, but he wants you to MASTER the subject. I have taken him several times because of this. He is extremely helpful and always gives clarification. Sometimes he can be confusing but asking questions is absolutely pertinent and encouraged on his part. Work hard, participate, and you'll do well.
When he says "Know your genetics" he will literally beat it into you until you cry with mercy. Take him if you want a challenge andor if you love molecular genetics and HIV viruses. Office hours are a must if you want to do well. Still recommend to get the text even it's not required bc his lectures are all over the place.
I got an A staying at least 15-20% above class average on exams (avg was 50%, 35%, 35% for 3 exams, I avgd 65-70% consistently). His exams are a thinking game- 40% material, 60% can u understand what he's asking. Didn't bother with book. 90% you tube, 10% lecture. For disc., type lecture notes on pdf bc he's fast. OVER-EXPLAIN everything disc test!
Honestly Curr is tough for a reason, he is trying to prepare you for how things will be in the real world, and if you can't handle it in his class than it's a wake up call. But if you are willing to put in the work he is a wonderful Professor that will go above and beyond to help you understand the material. He talks very fast, so record lectures!
If you go to his office hours or ask him to explain something after class, he is there to help. He's extremely tough on the tests and quizzes but this is to prepare you for the real world of science.
I'm a new transfer student & this is the first biology class I have taken in like 4 years & it was definitely a challenging class, BUT Dr. Curr is by far one the best professors I have had. He really cares that you know the concepts & not just the facts. You have to put in the effort if you want to pass, but it's most definitely possible! :)
Best bio professor at east bay! If you're serious about BIO you need to take classes with Dr. Curr. He is really helpful and a great lecturer. It's true the class is tough, but if you just put in the time and effort, an A is definitely possible. He let's you record his lectures, so do it if you can, it'll help a lot!
Dr. Curr is a tough professor but a great professor. He is fair & is an awesome lecturer! Record his lectures if you can, it'll help a lot! His quizzes & exams focus on concept, but it's great because knowing the concept is far better than short term memorization of facts. As tough as his class is, if you put in the time & effort, an A is possible!
First day of class, he gives you a "tough love" lecture & what to expect from him & the class. Believe every word he says. When it comes down to it, the class is very tough and there's a lot to learn in such a short amount of time, BUT he's an amazing professor & you will learn a lot. An A seems impossible, but really it's not! Curr is the best!
I wasn't even that interested in BIO but after taking this class, I have grown to really like it! His approach to teaching and his exams really challenge you to think beyond just the facts and I love that! Dr. Curr is best, he's also funny too, so the lectures are never boring! :) I definitely want him as a professor in the future again.
If I am going to spend $1500 for a class I expect to get my money's worth. Course was well worth the money. It challenged me to be the best I could be without discouraging me. Curr's tough and respectful, in office hours he's the best. A lot of info with a lot of humor. Worst part were peers who really didn't care made lecture and lab annoying
Dr. Curr is incredibly helpful. He will answer as many questions as you ask and never makes you feel bad for taking his classes. I have taken 3 classes with him already and while his classes and incredibly difficult, it is not hard to pass as long as you pay attention. Take excellent notes and if you have ANY Q's just ask him and go to office hours
Never have I taken a professor where I learned so much in just 10 weeks. This is definitely a tough class and you have to stay on top of your studying. Sometimes he would be all over the place with his lecture which made it somewhat confusing but other than that, he was amazing, I feel like I got my moneys worth by taking him!
Best professor on Planet Earth, let alone just this university. I've taken 6 classes with him, and even though every class has been INCREDIBLY TOUGH, I've retained so much knowledge from everything he has taught me. I'll definitely be looking for his classes again in grad school.
Dr. Curr is the HARDEST professor I ever had in Eastbay BUT You will LEARN A LOT from his class!I took him for Virology. What makes his class class hard is that You have to know the material conceptually and know how to apply it! So basically he is training you on how it is in the REAL WORLD! He is also very helpful in office hours.
One of the most entertaining professors I have taken. His class is pretty tough, but his exams are on the material covered. Hardly any memorization on exams all conceptual, he makes it clear it's hard to be successful if you don't know the material. If you're not serious about the course I would advise not taking it with Curr, but he's the best.
Stay away. Do you like reading and learning everything on your own? Like being put down in class? Like the average of your tests to be 50%? This class is for you. Otherwise, spend your money on a teacher who will teach you. Go buy a genetics book, he says, for an immunology class. He is pretentious, often unsure of what he is saying, and confusing.
Dr. Curr was tough, but expectations were reasonable for an upper division biology class. Office hours help a lot. Exams were difficult, but fair. Bottom line you work for your A and learn a lot. A few peers complained of the difficulty of the course, but the professor tells us how hard the course is on the first day, should not be a surprise.
He is a TOUGH teacher. I have never put this much time into a class. Lab is an easy A is you do as instructed, I recommend taking Kaushi. Lectures, are long, confusing, scattered, conceptual. He gives you very basic facts and you have to do the rest, meaning going in and learning and making connections between EVERYTHING.
Class was about as tough as I expected it would be given what people told me. Exams are pretty tough, but discussed topics. Some complaints about being too tough, but it's a genetic class, it supposed to be tough. My grade increased by seeing him in office hours, really makes things clear. Lectures were interesting due to his humor. A nice guy.
Very tough class, if youre going to slack off and not pay attention and skip class, DONT TAKE THIS CLASS!! If youre going to take it serious then take it. He is an amazing teacher and will help you on anything youre confused about. It is not an easy class but if you work hard you can succeed. Read the book in advance!!! and pay attention!
He told us right when we got in the class that MAJORITY OF US WILL FAIL,& majority of us did. I got a C and I ALWAYS payed attention and took excellent notes. I was good at Bio up until this class. You need to know things super in depth, definitions of things will not cut it. This class will make you think critically. Go to SI sessions!
Wonderful professor. Very difficult in his courses, but he cares for his students and will help them at any chance. Read the material and take lots of notes, very difficult class but is curved and you will pass if you try hard enough.
Funny character. Real helpful outside of class but the exams are very challenging.
He deliberately makes the course harder to "prepare" his students for professional school-- his class was more stressful than O-Chem and Physics combined IMO. Great guy, but I would DEFINITELY NOT recommend, especially if you're trying to maintain As. Ended up devoting MUCH more time to this class than my others and got a B, sadface.
This was a tough class, needed this class to enter a CLS program and felt I got my $$$ worth. Lot of information, but if you keep up with the info it's doable. He was always willing to help after class or in office hours. I would say serious students should take this class, only taking it for an upper division elective wouldn't take.
Unorganized with lecture, all over the place. Not helpful. The labs are not insict with lecture. I think he lost my interest of ever wanting to take him again when he told us that if you have accomedations that want to move away from that. I don't need your opinion about what you think about students with disabilities. Stick to stuff you know.
2 midterms, weekly hw, 1 final, 2/3 quizzes. Read the material BEFORE lecture or you'll be lost. Exams are hard, avg test scores below 50%. Avoid taking him at all costs if you want to get a good grade! He is funny, and knows his stuff and answers any questions you have, but HE'S SO HARD NEVER AGAIN. I wish I did audit him though
Don't find him to be that tough, he tests directly from his lectures and tests are fair. He got the class a great tutor, who has helped a lot. Stays after every class to answer questions and sees me in non-office hours. If you do poorly in this class, it's most definitely for not trying, you learn a lot. Overall, I would take him again.
Curr is probably the hardest prof. I've had so far. Not to be arrogant here, but I aced calculus, Ochem 1 and 2, but my standing with Curr rn is at a C+/B-. That's how hard he is. His lectures lack structure so reviewing my notes is a mess. His tests are difficult and detailed unreasonably. Goes beyond generalities, specificity, he wants perfection
As many of you know, this class is hard with Curr, however, you will learn a lot of stuff from him. If you're looking to just pass and not care about learning then this is the wrong guy for you. If you're actually inspired and want to learn, then this is the guy for you. I would recommend this teacher for molecular cell majors. The book helps a lot
I don't believe I have been this intellectually channeled in school before. It first It was maddening but I got the hang of the lectures and studying. I am not sure how I am doing in class. But It's defiantly prepared me solidly for all of my other courses in Biology. There was SI which was helpful to go to. Also Kurr new of a tutor too.
Tough but exams were more than fair. Had a quarter plagued with personal problems and Dr. Curr went out of his way to help me, meeting at other times besides his office hours and staying after every class to help me and other students out. He comes across as intimidating, but he is a really great guy. Just took the final today, I don't know grade.
Tough, friendly, fair. Great sense of humor. It's genetics, it's supposed to be hard, but you come way with a good understanding of the material. Best advice, don't slack on the Activity, very hard.
Not a bad course but really not a teacher who is looking to teach. He wants you to learn the entire subject on your own and he is there to entertain. He unfortunately has a very bad attitude towards the learning aspect of students. Don't take him at all.
Extremely dense subject. If you dont know your general bio very well, do not take this class until you do so. He's hard but fair. He goes above and beyond for his students. Despite everything he has going on, he still makes time to meet with students and sits with you and tries his hardest to make you understand a concept no matter how long it take
Class averages were 57s for the midterms and 20s for the take home activity exam. The easiest way to separate yourself from the class (since he curves) is to do well on that activity test. IMO the best way to study is to pay attention in class, read the book chapter before the weekly quiz and then again before the test. He's super helpful and kind.
Was told by several people not to take him, turned out by students who never took him. Genetics is very, very tough, but the amount of help he provides helps you pass the class. Best part of the class is he teaches you how to study. Would not listen to naysayers and would take him again. Best advice: READ THE ACTIVITY PAPERS!! Makes you laugh alot.
I have taken Dr. Curr for more than one class. No matter the subject, his courses are similar in structure. His lectures are in depth, however his power points aren't, so don't rely on them to study. Read the book and record the lectures to study for tests. He is always there to offer his help and guidance. He genuinely cares for his students.
Dr. Curr made a very difficult class enjoyable with his humor and he really helped me pass the class by going to office hours and staying after class to talk was well worth the effort. He gets past students to tutor and they were amazing, helped me pass the course. Tests were tough, but it's Immunology, a tuff class. I strongly recommend taking him
I struggled quite a lot in this course, however once I reached out to help, told Professor Curr my concerns, he really helped get me on track and even gave me advice for my career goals. I truly do feel like I learned so much about microbes, and it will stick with me since his class in conceptual based, not just memorization. Prof. Curr, thank you.
Professor Curr is great! I recommend you go to class and record his lectures so that you can go back home and take more notes on what you missed while he's talking, because the material can get confusing! The tests are really hard, but just pay really close attention to the details. Write them all down and study it!
This class was tough. I struggled quiet a bit but he offers a lot of extra credit and the main thing is office hours, and tutoring sessions. They were the only thing that got me through the class. tough material and a lot of conceptual study rather than memorization.
One of the most difficult courses taken to date and I am a biology major. However, I learned sooo much. He makes the class both knowledgeable and entertaining. Activity is the hardest, you discuss journal articles Best advice, understand the journal articles and you should do pretty good overall, as it's a good deal of points in the course.
Very intelligent individual, yet, he jumps in between topics within his lectures and does not go with the flow of the readings. However, make sure you listen to his lectures after class, for he mentions topics which are not found within the textbook readings. Nevertheless, I experienced many panic attacks within these ten weeks.
Research all the examples from lecture not in the textbook/that sound unfamiliar. Record & re-listen to his lectures. Read every single chapter, but focus mainly on the vocab - they could be on the test & do help with understanding concepts. Study consistently. Go to O.H. and email him for help (more lenient with grade!!) Hates phones/talking!
Toughest class so far, but learned a lot. There is very little memorization, heavy on concepts. Tells you what to expect for every exam. Activity is the toughest, participate and u can do well. He hate phones. Not sure how I did, as finals are next week, but either way I would recommend taking him. His sense of humor makes the class enjoyable.
Exams are hard, but nothing not talked about in lecture is on the exam. He stays after every class to talk with anybody that wants to talk with him. I think the hype is worse than than the reality. If you don't take the class seriously don't take him, seriously, he is only for students who want to learn the subject not just to take the course.
One of the best Professors ever. Made me develop more interest on the subject.
His lectures could be better, he moves through the material very fast in lectures and it could be hard to keep up at times. Pay attention in lectures and do all the homework. Forming a study group might be a good idea as well.
Bottom Line you learn from him. He's tough and does go fast, but I am glad I started out with him. As I am now struggling through genetics (not with him) which he said was going to be tough and it is. If you talk with him after class he's very easy going and super helpful. Totally suggest taking him.
Dr. Curr taught me so much and the material forced me to think critically about solving problems. This class whipped my study habits into shape. There is no other professor like Dr. Curr, he's a great mentor and resource. He is straightforward, but he sincerely cares about his students. This was the hardest class I've ever taken - totally WORTH IT.
Expected for you to have a lot of knowledge of biology on the first day of class. Pay close attention to everything he says bc he'll tell you to read from the book on the topic he was talking about w/o naming a specific chapter, while also bouncing between chapters in one lecture. If he notices your not following him he calls on you.
Had him for Lecture/Lab/Act, gave an extreme amount of extra credit to help out the class. I took physics/chem in H.S. no bio and was able to get the info, not true about prior info. Tests are no joke, know your amino acids, (he tells you this) I think he had questions on AA on each exam. I want to go to Medical school, so will take him again.
Had 3 biol. courses with Dr. Curr (cell/mol, genetics, Immuno), each one more intense than the last. He teaches you to change your study habits and he wrote a letter of rec for me as well for a Masters at George Wash. Univ. I seriously feel one of the main reasons I got in was through his teaching. Totally recommend for the serious students.
I took Curr for Genetic Analysis I and it has to be the hardest course I've ever taken. His tests are ridiculously hard, and he is unwilling to help students. Resorts to "you should know this already" or "google it" and even got frustrated at the whole class because we couldn't understand what he was saying. Take him if you want to lower your GPA.
He's a really nice guy but bad communicator. Exams are not very clear and very disorganized. (First test he didn't even print the right pages. Syllabus was wrong. Wouldn't tell us the date of the final until the week before) Even though he has partial credit, it doesn't feel like it when his class averages are usually in the 20-30/100 for tests.
Tough stressful class. Peers complained throughout how difficult it was but most didn't know what the hell was going on. Had Kitting for Ecology, Evans for Physiology, it was great to finally be challenged by a class. My goal is med school and Curr helped me a great deal. Ignore the naysayers, its obvious most didn't put in the work low test scores
Just posted below and saw the two posts below mine have grades, but grades are not even out yet. I was above the curve all semester and I am unsure of my grade. Me thinks that some grades may not be as high as one thinks. just saying.
Nice man. So-so professor. Delivers lectures in very disorganized manner. Very hard to follow. Tests questions border on esoteric. No fair!!! Puts students through un-needed stress due to his disorganization. Could at very least put some effort into planning more organized lectures with well explained concepts.
Really know central dogma (at least 75% of the material relates back to this). Know amino acids and D/RNA structures really well. Go to office hours (bumps up grade). Study consistently! YouTube will be your saving grace. Record his lectures (for both lec and act) bc he talks fast. It'll be a LONG semester if you choose to take him. Good luck!
Dr. Curr is really a great professor overall. He really cares about his students. His tests are hard but watch YouTube to help follow concepts. If you understand central dogma really well and amino acids, you should do fine. Just knowing those things will keep you above average or at least with average and youll pass. Participate in activity!
Not for the timid, but so worth it if you push through. Lectures actually were well organized, DNA went with DNA lecture RNA went with RNA lecture (Cen. Dogma). Tests are long, but fair. He helps everyone who comes to him make it through. Many in class, me included, did piss poor, I did well in Activity and that helped. I will take him again.
Let's get this straight. He is not a good teacher. His notes are extremely disorganized and he does NOT explain things very well. His tests aren't that bad, but his questions are too vague. He's very willing to help his students, but youtube was a greater help. Would also be very discouraging at times. A true bad apple in the Bio department
The real truth about Curr is that he is a tough instructor with expectations of his students and directly tells students this the first day. Most of the class was not serious about the class and seriously expected to pass. Exam averages were low, but with some effort you can get an A in the course (I did). LOTS of Extra Credit. Also just a nice guy
you could record your lecture like I did and listen to them a thousand time but his lectures were made to teach to students as if they already knew the context. EXTREMELY DIFFICULT class really makes you think about your aptitude for a science major, he made me hate biology. He is super nice and approachable but you will need to teach yourself
Science especially Bio is supposed to be studied in orderly fashion to fluidly understand all the connections especially if its an intro class. This class has no order so its confusing to make the connections. Hes only challenging because he is unorganized, as well as he expects people to come in with prior basic knowledge. Ive taken easier o-chem.
Attend class or you will literally fail. The course is difficult, but he teaches you how to study for a college level course. Majority of the information he teaches sets the foundation for UD courses that you will need. (For Biology Majors.) He has exams, no homework (Except for studying). His cat's name is Archaea. Nickname: Chae.
I've taken biology classes before and this was by far one of the hardest classes I've taken. Lots of homework, doesn't have at least one review day before the final & there's A LOT of material that he covers. He goes through the material really fast so RECORD HIS LECTURES. He also gave us hw & a quiz due the day of and before the final. SUPER MAD.
I don't think he really cares about his students. The way he teaches is unorganized. He even forgets what he is teaching during lectures. Test are hard and he grades even harder. He can be rude too. I really wished i took it with someone else, i love biology and enjoy learning new things in the field but he did not make it fun or interesting.
Lectures have EXTREME amount of information. This professor mentions a lot of unnecessary information in lecture and forgets to mention some important information(learned this in SI sessions). This professor believes that students should study MANY hours without taking in consideration that a lot of us are full time students with up to 17 units.
Hes a nice guy, approachable as well. Not a good professor though. If you love biology, don't take his class.
Hard class, you need to really put in the work, but really knows what he's talking about. He explains things in pretty good detail, so listen carfefully. The HW helped me a lot as did attending his office hours. Really helps you behind the scenes.
Dr Curr is undeniably one of the hardest professors here at CSUEB, he engages in tough love as he does try to make sure uncommitted students drop and helps the committed students learn. As one of the few freshmen there, I shouldn't have been allowed to take this class, even Curr told me to drop, but I studied my butt off and passed, 4-star Prof!
Dr. Kerr is a nice dude outside of class but a terrible teacher in my opinion. For a basic biology class, he makes this class 10x harder than it needs to be. I studied so much and still failed because his tests are so heavy. His test averages were around 35% which says a lot... At this point it's not just the students fault. DON'T TAKE HIM
Technologically challenged, he expects his students to adapt to college, but fails to hold himself to the same standard by adapting to 2020. He thinks people hate him bc of his lack of structure (Understatement). Hes wrong-This class isnt hard, but his main objective is to make clear that nobody is good enough for his precious industry.
VERY tough. High expectations and teaches at a senior level, but you will learn a LOT. Focus on lectures followed by the textbook. This is SCIENCE. It's supposed to be difficult. Study everyday, ask questions before it's too late. He is very patient and kind. (exam 1 avg 38, activity exam avg 22) VERY steep curve. Take good notes in activity!
Dr. Curr tough? Yep, but you really learn from him. I did better in class, than on-line, but the tests were fair. The toughest part of the course is the Activity, ask him questions and make sure you know the material, I did average on the lecture tests, but really did well on the Activity tests, which pulled my grade up. Goes out of his way to help
He goes through lectures quickly so I recorded each lecture, redid my notes, & utilized the textbook, google & youtube to gain a better understanding of the concepts. He will prepare you for a future in healthcare and help you develop critical thinking skills. Don't be discouraged! You will learn a lot about immunology and biology in general.
Dr. Curr is difficult, but you walk away feeling you learned something. He said from day one to know the amino acids. So know you're AA, he had questions on every exam concerning them. Activity is where you get your points. I struggled in lecture, but really going over the papers and asking him questions. I was above the curve on each Act. exam.
Curr's notoriously one of the hardest professors (if not the hardest) at EB. It's true, he's hard. His teaching method will change YOUR study methods. Nothing will be handed to you in grad/professional school and taking Curr is the perfect opportunity to realize YOUR learning style before you flee undergrad. Sink, or let him help you swim.
Professor Curr is one of the hardest professors I have ever taken. His class is by no means easy, it is a stress fest all the way through. If you take this class you WILL change your study habits if you have any hope of passing. All questions are conceptual, memorization won't help you much. He curves at the end, if you take him good luck.
Take if you are ready to spend the time on the information! He gives a lot of material in each lectures. Exams are tough. A bonus is once you take a class with him you will learn how to manage ANY other course. I took both genetics, virology, and cell culture. BE READY TO STUDY ALOT. Dr Curr is always available to help and overall a great teacher
If you want to be a research scientist or go to grad school, take one of his classes. His most important lesson: critical thinking. Exams/assignments are hard. Go to office hours if you have questions about designing experiments. It will save you. Taking this class was very stressful but everything I learned has made school/work so much easier.
Dr. Curr is one of my favorite professors I have taken in college. Yes, notorious for how hard he is BUT you will learn the most complex subject in science. Great professor! Gave me life advice and confidence in myself. Go to OH and he will help you. Be ready to cry too, but he will help you and guide you. Take him if you want to learn and succeed.
I like him and i do think he is a great teacher, but his class is tough. Also keep in mind he has a steep curve, just do better than the average. He's very knowledgeable about what he teaches. Very helpful but lectures are BRUTALLY DENSE so record and re-write those notes! also, recommend not taking him if you already have a heavy class load.
He is an unfair professor. He is biased in grading. Will grade you better if you smile and ask questions like "Please repeat" every now and then. Doesn't teach a thing and even forgets what he was talking about. He sometimes teaches wrongly in class and if you ask for explanations will make sure to put you down. Very ill mannered. Misbehaves.
He makes this class harder than it should be by not teaching anything at all. He just blabbers few concepts in his class and asks to read on your own. This class is hard because he doesn't guide or teach you anything. He made me hate biology after I took his class. He is busy in his own world.
As someone who wants to be comeptitive for medical school I enjoyed this course and the fact that he forced me to learn the material. Exams were fair, but brutal, but he changed the curve in the end so most people passed. I didn't get the grade I hoped for, but I learned a good deal and changed my study habits. I will take him again for immunology
My classes this semester are a breeze because he was so tough. My sleepless nights have paid off. I know central dogma like the back of my hand. I know how to troubleshoot molecular cloning. He was so unorganized that it made me go out of my way to study the book/research papers. Make sure you spare time for 20+ hrs study/week for B+/A-.
I heard how tough he was which is true, but the bottom line is you come away from the class with a good understanding of genetics. He's not into memorizing info with the exception of amino acids (big points for knowing these). I struggled through the class but he helped a lot. He's not for everyone, but if you want a challenge he's one of the best.
Yes, this is a tough course. Yes, Curr does not make it easy, because understanding this topic takes a lot of patience and determination. I adored his lectures, wit, energy. He loves helping students who care. Pop quizzes are definitely a thing, 2x a week when I was there. He is a great professor and a kind-hearted gentleman. Took 2 courses by him
Dr. Curr's lectures are Socratic and dense with information. He strongly encourages for his students to participate and he's fun to interact with. The course is very difficult, but he makes sure resources are available to students and is very receptive of questions. His teaching method is tough, but it helped me better grasp the material.
He is tough, but the amount of knowledge you come out of his class with is crazy. Curr is like a big teddy bear that just wants his students to succeed in life. He expects a lot because its an upper division course so know your 140A & genetics like the back of your hand. He's willing to work with you in and out of class. Best teacher at CSUEB.
Don't let high rating deceive you. He is though in the sense that his lectures are bare bones. He writes a lot on the board but tends to jump around from one topic to another. The only way I got an A was by strictly teaching myself through the book and $80 per semester pearson homework. Would not recommend unless you are ready to learn by yourself.
I took Curr last semester. I heard how tough he was and was prepared for the challenge. It was no where near as bad as I thought, though it was no cake walk. There is a ton of reading and he wants you to know information from Biol.140A (which is fair), So, go over you old material. Toughest part was the Activity, but I enjoyed reading the papers.
very difficult class, professor goes to fast in each lecture, and just skims over the topic. quizzes and midterms the questions are very in-depth about the topic. Be prepared to teach yourself! he textbook doesn't really help, he talks about many things which are not included in the textbook. expects you to know everything learned in bio 140A.
Avoid if possible! Lectures aren't helpful. He reads off slides that are just pictures and does not post them until weeks after. Quizzes and tests are difficult. Book is required but not helpful. Be ready to get picked on in class.
Dr. Curr was an amazing professor in terms of teaching his knowledge, the only problem was the questions he asked on his exams and quizzes did not really connect back to his teachings. For example, if he taught you how to make pancakes, he would now expect you to know how to make crepes if he were to test you. Be prepared to stress and study A LOT!
Honestly Curr is a ok professor but his class is challenging. The Lecture are heavily filled with information so I recommend to record them and go back over the information he will asks questions from stuff he covered for 5 min or a whole hour. Go to Si it will be your best friend and make friends/study groups it helps a lot.Go over Bio140A trust me
I took immuno with Curr last year and loved it taking virology this year. So, far just going over virus history, enjoying the class. He's challenging, but makes the class entertaining and I actually come out knowing something about the topic as opposed to my other courses. You earn your grade. Know your amino acids. He really loves those things.
Please avoid this professor AT ALL COST. The textbook is useless unless if you want to know the basic concepts for your own good. Good luck studying on your own, extensive researching and googling for topics that he covered during his lectures. His lectures are VERY unorganized, jumping from topic A to D to C to Z.. he lives in his own world.
Coming from Europe I have been disappointed by the courses at East Bay so far. However, taking Dr. Curr's class is refreshing. Yes, it's a difficult course, genetics is difficult, but he does a lot to make it interesting and understandable. I feel better prepared, If nothing else know your base pairs and amino acids you will do well on the exams.
He doesn't take responsibility for how he structured this class, refuses to listen to concerns or adapt to different ways of teaching. Dr. Curr approaches his material as if we are at the same knowledge level as him. He sets unrealistic expectations for his students and constantly blames other people for his faults.
Amazing professor. Not sure I understood everything he talked about, but is constantly asking people if they have questions. I had two study groups both worthless as they talked about how hard the class is instead of studying for the material. This was the overall attitude of the class so I started studying on my own and going office hrs.
He is tough. The exam questions prepare you for the reality of research in biology. Recording the lectures is highly recommended for studying purposes. Most of your grade is based on the exams and quizzes. Not that it matters, but he also has a pretty good sense of humor and a jolly demeanor when prompted. Super engaging.
Professor Curr runs a challenging but engaging class. The exams cover a lot of material, so recording lectures and forming study groups are key. Unstuck ai was a lifesaver for test prep.
i learned a ton of valuable information that set me up for success in future classes. the people who are not fans of dr curr either dont like doing work, or werent willing to take the extra effort they needed to understand the information. he was always available through email or in office hours if you had any questions about the class material.
never drove carefully to his class 'cause i never wanted to make to his class! very bad and touchy
