The best Professor I've ever had, he provides the best notes and excepts the bes

very clear notes, expects the best, rewards hard work and honesty
i wish all profs were as organized and thorough as him... great prof!!!
Mousie man
Knows his stuff. Easy to understand.
Poor? come on, this guy is great. Clear lectures, and notes.
ya right poor? this prof's great, and his attitude to students couldn't be better, he's always willing to give you a hand, answer questions and then some! good prof.
Excellent prof! Extremely organized, precise, and thorough. Very knowledgable in his field.
patient and very clear
He is the best prof I have had at university; very clear, easy to understand, great notes AND he treats you with respect!
Extremely helpful. Fair Testing (lab is hard tho). Available for help; treats you with respect in and out of class. Very organized and clear, a class act all around. Best prof I've ever had.
He was very clear, he always took up tests in class, and he had MANY examples. I really liked him.
Easily, the best teacher in the department. Comprehensive and clear lectures... fair tests... can't ask for anything better
Good man.
Great prof and great class. Assignments are challenging and you should Expect the questions from your assignments to be on the tests
This prof was an awesome prof. Although I foudn the course hard it was interesting to go because he was very organized and very patient and really seemed to respect the students and had no rude comments or angry glares when you asked a question, dumb or not. Is willing to help you outside of class if you let him. Very nice and interesting guy.
Likes to use his own publications for lecture and student presentation material, instead of using ground breaking papers form journals like "Nature" and "Science". Graduate class ended up NOT being scientically objective - questioning the 'facts' resulted in him taking it personally. Classes ended up being mush with no value. Truth hurts.
Has poor understanding of basic biological priciples that are tought in first year level classes. Tries to pass himself off as an expert in areas he clearly has very little expertise. Marks seem very subjective and poorly defined.
Great guy. Very helpful and marks fairly. Really passionate about his field
Great professor! Is very organized and his lecture material corresponds to the textbook material. The tests are fair. Also explains his material very well. He definitely knows what he is doing!
Best proffessor, explain things crystal clear.
For a first year Chem prof he's one of the best you're going to get. He explains everything clearly and with relevant and helpful examples, is patient with students, and is willing to go back over material people may be struggling with. Tests are fair if you study. Overall a very good teacher.
Amazing Professor, explains things very clearly with great details. Uses a lot of examples and goes through all the steps.
I and many others did not find his exams fair this year. We asked him if the questions would be based on the assignments or the class questions that we do in class (because they're completely different) and he stated it would be based on the class questions. But it wasn't. Go with Goltz if you can. He's the BEST professor you'll get.
This class is so easy, but only if 1) You show up to class. 2) You read your text book and do practice problems. Obviously you will do well in any class if you do both of those things. His lectures are good. Easy to understand. He assigns practice problems from the textbook and those questions will pop up on assignments and tests.
Show up to as many classes as you can to understand the material he teaches and do all the practice problems from the textbookassignments. A con he has, was he did not post any notes online and you had to get them all down in class, and thus when he was explaining the info you had to copy notes down at the same time and you miss the explanation.
Very underrated prof. He is a remarkably coherent and fluid speaker; he knows his stuff well. He doesn't post his notes online, but it hardly matters as his pacing is spot on. His tests can be a bit tricky, but if you practice, there'll be no problems. I highly recommend Dr. Friesen as an Intro to Chem prof; one of the best you'll get.
Lectures were clear, however got a little dry at times. There is very little in the lecture that is of bennifit for visual learners. Tests were much harder than expected but they were fair. All around nice guy. I would recomend this prof.
Does not post lecture notes or use nexus, does not give the tests back, does not provide answers for mastering chemistry assignments, I attended every class but when I had questions about the homework and went to go ask for help his answers were "I said it in class, you probably weren't listening" or a short explanation that didn't really help
Friesen is a great prof to have in first year. He explains things clearly and shows lots of examples to get the idea across. Weekly assignments to do online for grades. Tests were not too hard, but the final exam hurt many students. All in all, it was a good experience.
Great Prof! Makes things super easy to understand. A good mixture of notes and examples in class. Doesn't rush during lecture and is always open to seeing people after class. Doesn't posts any notes online though so you have to show up to class.
Very difficult tests, must remember formulas especially for exams. Decent professor, but he still left me confused after a fair amount of lectures.
his tests can be tricky if you don't read the questions carefully. One thing that I love about this prof is that he doesn't tell you, "here are the equations that you have to remember". He explains the concept behind the equations along with the steps involved. I didn't have to memorize anything as long as I understood the concept.
You can't afford to miss a class. Lectures are not available online. Problems are practiced in class. If you can, try to attend the review sessions the chemistry department offers to first year students; It'll be very helpful for exams.
Amazing professor! Gave many examples in class and clarified difficult concepts, tried to make them as relatable as possible. Textbook reading is a must. Exams were fair if you payed attention in class and did chapter problems. Would highly recommend taking his classes.
Friesen is awesome. Lectures are must attend but he is so clear, paced so perfectly, and goes through excellent examples. All suggested problems should be attempted as they will help you get that A. He will explain these essential concepts to you in he best way anyone can. Take intro chem with him and you will do great.
He is very clear on what you need to know for tests. He posts his powerpoins on mastering chemistry. Gives suggested practice problems and assignments online. He isn't the most exciting professor, but does keep you engaged. He will answer any questions you have during the lecture as long as he hasn't gone over it just before, or talk to him after.
A decent prof, always explained concepts thoroughly in class. Lots of online assignments. Exams were fair.
Pros: Very organized, he's good at explaining the theory part of the subject, concise, does good set of questions, all exams are multiple choice, fair questions. Cons: Doesn't go over the midterm, doesn't provide extra outside help (compare to Vanderwel), the lecture is all you get & his office hours, don't skip - questions done in board.
Friesen is a great Chemistry professor. He was very organized and always came prepared to every lecture. He clearly discussed topics during class and left room for people to answer questions, particularly when he could tell a lot of students were getting confused. Outside of class he was very accessible through email and answered any questions.
One of my favourite profs! Lectures extremely detailed with references to the textbook and how it may tie into assignments. Focus on end of chapter questions in the textbook, questions he works through during class, as well as online assignments!! Very fair exams, evenly distributed with theory questions as well as calculations.
Great at explaining difficult concepts and gives fair practice questions from the textbook, the mastering chemistry assignments were never overly hard and were a grade booster more than anything else. Overall amazing prof and person.
Just a straight beauty. Made me love chemistry more than I thought possible. Very funny as well - even cracked some weed jokes one time (he's old af). Stay on top of the homework and you'll pass with flying colours. Highly recommend.
Friesen is a very good prof for intro Chem, his lectures are very detailed and he is very specific about what you need to know for tests. His tests were extremely fair if you did the practice problems he assigned and the weekly assignments. Overall, Friesen is a great prof and a really nice/approachable person.
Ken is a real gem, probably my favourite prof in the whole school he puts all of his lecture notes online, but provides no explanations to them online so if you skip class odds are you'll end up hella confused. Great guy though, easy tests if you study, cracks grandpa jokes from time to time, 11/10 suggest.
One of the best first year profs out there. If he can teach all of my other chem courses i would take his class. Lectures isn't mandatory but its best to attend them because the examples he talks about and does in class are mostly what is in the exams.
Dr. Friesen provides good examples in class that are helpful for completing assignments and doing well on tests. He is available outside of class for extra help. Doing the practice problems is useful for understanding the material. Excellent professor.
Friesen was the best Chem prof. He explains materials well and answers questions in a way that makes sense. Probably the best prof I've had thus far. I wish he taught Organic Chem. He's very well respected and a true gentlemen.
Highly recommend Mr. Friesen. He really knows what he's teaching, and tests/exam is fair. 2 tests, 1 exam, and online mastering chemistry assignments each week. Labs are the hardest part about 1111 and 1112.
Friesen is a very organized prof, which is something I really appreciate. Even tho some see it as a hassle, I love that he assigns specific problems to do in textbook for each chapter(some other profs don't do this so you're on your own for practice). As long as you review the quizzes, flip thru concepts in text, and do practice probs, you're set!
Explains everything extremely well and is always happy to set up a time to meet with you if you have questions.
Amazing! He is very knowledgeable and you can tell he really cares about his students. He assigns online assignments to help us understand the concept. His tests are average (some questions are hard/some are very easy). He is pretty organized, but try to print the powerpoint notes the night before the lecture bc he tends to change them!
Dr. Friesen was an amazing chemistry professor. He covers everything that you need to know in his lectures, and is willing to answer any questions you may have. He does tend to assign lots of homework, and the online assignments are quite difficult, but if you keep up with it you shouldn't have a problem with the course! He cares about his students
Dr. Friesen is by far the best Chem prof at UofW. He genuinely tries to get you to understand the concepts and dies his best to keep things entertaining. His exams are tough and yet fair. I would absolutely recommend him to anyone taking chem
He is a good prof and wants his students to succeed. He explains concepts well and gives good examples similar to the ones on the test. I found his exam hard but his tests were fair. As long as you do the practice questions he assigns and read the textbook for concepts you dont understand, you will do well in this course.
Great professor. Dr. Friesen's lectures we always very organized and he did an amazing job of clearly teaching the material. I would 100% take another one of his classes.
caring, encourages students to speak up if they don't understand, explains concepts well so lectures are important, very clear lecture material and funny at times. do the practice questions and read the text to help understand concepts. Tests and exams are fair. Great prof!
Great lecturer. Very good for someone not so great at chemistry like myself. However while studying for the exams I found myself using the textbook more than the lecture notes as I needed more explanation for most concepts. Going to lecture was helpful but thoroughly going through the textbook could be just as useful
AMAZING
Professor Friesen makes Chemistry so easy. He explains so well and you could guess this from the fact many students who are not even enrolled in his class attend his lectures. His tests are fairly easy and based on questions that he solves in class and gives for practice. Just go ahead and attend his class. Trust me you will not regret it.
Fantastic prof, regret not taking CHEM1112 (the follow-up class) with him. His in class explanations are valuable to students, and he gladly re-explains concepts to students if they need it. His slides are nice and condensed, although you need to attend in person to see him explain things.
One of my favourite profs, he's great at giving lectures and makes them so interesting and easy to follow along with. He is more than happy to help you after class and re-explain things to you.
Dr. Friesen was one of the best profs that I had in my first year of university! His lectures are interesting and flow very nicely. His tests are fair, and are based on his lecture notes. Dr. Friesen is also EXTREMELY helpful outside of class if you require extra clarification on a certain topic. Would take his class again in a heartbeat.
Dr. Friesen is an exceptional professor, as indicated by his knowledge, lecturing ability, and accessibility outside of class. His class notes are used as a template for his lectures, but you should reference the textbook as well. Tests and exams are not easy, but fair. Simply put, Dr. Friesen is the professor you want for first year chemistry!!
He is a great prof and presented the material with passion and interested. Always reviewed if something wasn't understood, also showed how much more is there in Chemistry than just the exams. Made the subject very interesting and would highly recomend for any of the first year chemistry courses. Side note participation is not madatory, but helpful
Get him while you can. Really great 1st year chem prof
Amazing, organized, and very caring. Explains concepts clearly. Tests are fair. Assigns specific questions to practice w/c saves you so much stress when doing/writing assignments/test! try to do all the practice!
Dr. Friesen is one of the best profs you can take for intro Chem. His lectures are organized, and time will go by quickly in class. If you need help/clarification on something, he is always accessible outside of class, and is more than willing to help. Fantastic prof- would take again any day!
So much love for Professor Friesen. Took both CHEM1111 and 1112 with him. Term Tests and Exam were easy, just need to study his lectures and understand. Come to class for the examples because he tells you how to start them off, those questions are also similar to the tests/exam. He's definitely my favourite prof in U of W!
Professor Frisesen is the best first year chem prof you can get. Big papa. 10/10
For a hard class like chemistry, he made sense of the material. He was the reason I passed first year chemistry. Very funny, respected and knows what he's talking about. Would 100% take his classes again. Highly recommend taking his first year chem class.
I absolutely loved CHEM-1111 with Dr. Friesen! He does't make university chemistry as scary as most people think. My advice is to show up to all the lectures, do the homework and ask him question or book an appointment with him. The tests are fair and are similar to the homework questions. Be sure to read the question! some may trip you up. ;)
Great guy. Super caring and wanted the best for his students. He did a good job at keeping the students engaged and didn't have super boring lectures.
Friesen teaches using powerpoint slides, so I'd recommend having a way to annotate them for lecture notes. They are provided for you, which is really nice. He explains topics really well and gives you useful examples for homework and studying. If you do your work, he is an awesome teacher and I recommend him to all first year chem students.
Probably the best prof for first year chem
He is a gem! Best prof for first-year chem for sure, the others are quite questionable... He is really nice and explains things clearly, gave us a bunch of practice questions that he made himself.
Such a sweet guy and really cares about his students. While the course isn't exactly easy he makes it seem easy and super interesting. He's always there to help and super nice about questions, he really makes it seem like there is no such thing as a stupid question.
Friesen is very good at explaining his material. He does give out lots of homework but those homework really helps you to get familiarized with the type of questions that are on the exams. He is very nice and teaches with enthusiasm.
Since it's an online class, exams were made harder. Assignments were def challenging too. But he's very nice and he explains topics very well.
Friesen takes the time to explain his material and allows students to ask questions during his lectures. He assigns textbook questions which are not graded but is essential to do well on tests and exams. To all my fellow Sisler High School students, if you took Carrington, its easy stuff :)
Fantastic prof. Clear notes, tons of examples, explains things so clearly. Tests were not easy but not difficult, as he throws in no curve-ball questions. Take him for both intro chems if you get the shot.
Dr. Friesen is a great prof. He has a lot of knowledge to share and teach. I did find his lectures pretty dull tho. He goes over things pretty fast and doesn't explain everything clearly; however, if you reach him during his office hours he will answer your questions gladly. Tests are pretty straightforward, as long as you do the assignment.
Very fair exams and a great person. 10/10 take a chem class with him if you can.
Love his talking pace and how he always asks if anyone has questions. Speaks clearly and is insanely organized. Gives great examples too!
Good prof overall. Clear assignments, communicated ideas well, very fair tests.
