He is a really nice guy, and if you ask for help, he goes out of his way. That said, a decent % of our class is failing too. He presents the material with power point slides and flies through the material. Hard tests. This class made me hate math.
He was deliberately vague, half the class failed, his tests were overly hard, and didn't even cover half the material that he was supposed to. At PSU, the professor covered twice the material, and still managed a class average 20% above ours.
Run the other way. The first instructor that I can safely say factors his personal opinion of you into your grade. Says he doesn't test things not covered in class, then does exactly that (curve ball problems). Definitely has a Napoleon complex.
These other people are high on crack! Ken rocks! He stays as late as you need him to and he comes in on Saturdays incase anyone wants help. He doesn't hold your hand and that's probably why these whiners hate him. His tests are pretty tough.
I worked my tail off and got a 'D'. This guy has no mercy. He's also obsessed with Torricelli. Save it for physics.
He is a great teacher! The material in 256 is challenging, and the Engineering students like to whine whenever a teacher goes beyond "plug and chug" and delves into theory.Kidoguchi is a 1st rate prof. He will go the extra mile for you, but be prepared to put this class above all else!
Great Professor! Moves fast, but makes himself available for students before and after class. (and on Saturday). Mock exams before each test, so you know exactly what you will be tested on. Funny too.
Very hard instructor, his class is more like a physics class than a math class. As is the case with most instructors; he is a great person, but this usually means you are a bad instructor.
Hard tests, mock exams though (that's good), no calculator on half of each test! Teaches by powerpoint and that sucks. Especially for this class. Each test has one "gift" which is nice. He comes in on Sat. for open lab. He is an extreemly hard teacher though.
If you are an EE, you must take ODE's from Ken. The man will prepare you for your future classes. He is probably the most dedicated and helpful teacher at PCC, but his class is very challenging for slackers. If you work hard, though, it will pay off.
I specifically put off vector calc to take it from this prof and it was great! Possibly the most fun I have ever had in a math class. The saturday open labs are also a bonus.
Incredibly hard and moves very fast. I loved math before taking this class. Now I hate it.
Mr. Kidoguchi is an awesome, but challenging teacher. He is a very funny person, and he makes many jokes during lectures. (Check out his website!) However, he is also very serious about the material, and he expects a lot out of his classes. So far, he seems like a cool teacher, and I would probably take him again.
He has a good personality but is the hardest professor you'll ever face. He'll try to bring the class together with a couple of jokes here and there but I always laugh just to save his self-esteem. The subject is not that hard, but he will make it a living hell for you.
Really funny guy. Would love to hang out with him. Goes through lecture way too fast and uses power point. Class is really hard worked my ass of for a crappy grade. Class is too hard in my opinion
Professor Kidoguchi is sincerely interested in the success of his students. His Saturday math labs are extremely helpful. It's like having a few tutor for 5 hours per week. He gives mock exams before each exam so you are not in the dark. If anyone has negative things to say about him, it's probably because they have a small mouth.
Though I was a minority in the class, I found Ken's teaching style to work well for me. I got a much better understanding of Trig. out of the class when I wasn't expecting to learn anything from the course. His frequent and mostly unfunny wisecracks are kind of annoying but overall he is a pretty good teacher.
I know that Kidoguchi has a reputation for being a very hard teacher. To get a good grade in the class all you have to do is know how to do the quizes and the mock exams. You may find some similarities in the real exam. Hint, before signing up for his class, go to his class webpage. You will find answer sets to his homework and old exams, it helps.
Ken was one of the toughest teachers I've had, but I learned a lot. He is willing to put in the effort and expects the same from his students. Just make sure to check his website often and early and don't fall behind.
KEN IS SO COOL!He knows the material well, and he is so helpful. He is willing to open the lab even he has no class on that day.He is a bit strict, but if you follow all his instructions, you will be fine.Remember, WTF stands for Where's The Formula.
He is the best math teacher at PCC and in Oregon.
I have no comments to say about this instructor except DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS.
My favorite teacher at PCC. Study his mock exams to get a good grade, then spend the rest of the term learning as much as you can; it's not too hard.
Mr. Kidoguchi is a nice person, but as a professor, I feel he goes too far to make the questions tougher than they should be. He tests your algebra and simplification skills more than your skills at integration. Passing his class is like touching your nose from behind your head. He is also impatient, and also is not clear about what he expects.
I was having doubt in the beginning on whether i would pass his class but i manage to pass with a decent grade. Kidoguchi is a very knowledgable and tough teacher. Even though his class was hard, i had learned alot and expect to continue to take his class. If you want some challenge, i recommend taking his class.
Ken is a fantastic teacher. Not only is he extremely smart and a good lecturer, but he has a great method for teaching math and giving students the tools they need to succeed in his difficult courses, like mock exams and a 4-hour math lab every Saturday. He will challenge you, but teach you a ton. He's also a great guy outside of class.
Ken does not give lectures, Ken gives powerpoints. He plays favorites: spends more time helping the A students and less time helping the C students. Ken did a great job of destroying every ounce of confidence I had in this subject. some love him as a teacher, some hate him.
Ken is a decent professor for applied differential functions. He believes strongly in real world examples, and most homework assignments and quizzes reflect this practical problem approach. Expect lots of hw and a lot of rules for hw. There are rules for everything from where you can write your name to the margins you can use, unnecessarily rigid.
Be prepared for an entry quiz the first day! Ken is extremely intelligent and challenged me. Wish I had him for previous math courses. Worked my ass off for a C! Rigid on HW formatting, but fair when it came to late assignments. I'm kind of scared to take anymore calculus classes from him if 252 was this hard.
Great Teacher, very helpful, but hard!!!
Ken is definitely a challenging prof. I saw more applications than in any of my other math classes. Yeah, it's about time!!! There is an atmosphere of keep up or die trying, but he is willing to help whenever a student needs it. I wish I could go back and take all of my previous math classes from the Gouc! Didn't like the book that much.
Pro: Explains material well, notes available online, friendly, mock-exams to prep you, knows his stuff inside out and can teach it to you.... Con: Many medium-length homework assignments with non-systematic due dates, power-point notes, derivation heavy... Other: Whatever he covered on the mock-exams, it **will** be on there. Stop-watch exam's.
This teacher made me hate math and feel lost entirely. I am used to getting a's in math. If you struggle at all with the subject I would advise you to stay away! I think he takes out his need for a cigarette break out on your homework. Some people like him, but I have no clue why.
Ken is a great teacher, with clear lectures. Everything is available online, including solutions to all HW assigned. Tests are exactly like the mock exams he hands out beforehand. If you can't understand him, you don't belong in DiffEQ.
Ken is awesome. He is knowledgeable and his lectures and classes are well put together. He also does a great job in applying his problems to the 'real world'. I would recommend him, highly.
He really knows his stuff! I've never had an instructor profess such an understanding of math. Hard class though; way more abstract and complicated than MTH111C. However, he gives mock exams b4 every test that DIRECTLY reflect what will be on the test. Ask q's, attend his Sat. lab, and study the heck out of the practice tests, and you'll be fine
I had Ken for 112&256. His classes are difficult, but he is the only teacher who gives up his saturday mornings to help students. If you are ready to work hard and you want to learn, Ken is ready to teach. If you are bullsh*t*n, Ken is not the Teacher you want. He is dedicated and he likes what he does, that is hard to find in a teacher these days
DAILY quizzes, INCLUDING THE 1ST DAY (over what you remember). Lots of homework, practice exams are exactly what's on the midterms, just different numbers. If you find the midterms hard, then I suggest you drop the class, because the final is twice as hard! Makes you break into teams and present in front of class. Stay on task, and you'll do fine.
He is a very hard teacher, but if you want a challenge I recommend taking him. His Powerpoint lecture notes are often confusing, but he is very generous with his time outside class. The tests are hard, but their questions are always very similar to the questions on the mock exams. If you study the mock exams inside and out, you will do fine.
MTH256: Very difficult professor. I am a fine math student, but I - along with most other students - struggled through his class. Class average on midterm was about 60%. He spends lots of time on theory and derivations. Difficult tests, difficult quizzes, lot of HW. He is very helpful individually, though. If you want a challenge, he's your man.
Probably the most misunderstood teacher at PCC. Ken is excellent once you figure out his angle, which, btw, he will deny exists. He teaches difficult calculus by the numbers, yet insists that you understand it conceptually. Once you get that, you'll excel. Best tips on tests: 1) all prob's are same # of points, 2) find easy conceptual solutions.
This was by far the best math class I have ever taken. Between Ken's involving lectures and the group activities, this class was a lot of fun. Lecures include mostly application based problems (springs, mixtures, population growth, etc.). Ensure you have a good grasp of derivatives, integrals, complex numbers, and Euler's Identity.
Man I'm dreading taking any other teacher for math than this man. He truly understands what math is for engineers and physical scientists. He knows that in our jobs we will have all resources possible to solve math, so he bases his test of that idea I think. Tech and non tech with cheat sheet on both part of test. Just do your hw and pay attention.
Great teacher, a bit hard. Takes best of two midterms. Cheat sheet allowed, tech and non-tech sections (know your trig) for each test. Group presentation part of each test, class-graded. All lectures and homework solutions posted online (VERY nice). A bit hard, he makes you know the stuff. Who said being an engineer was easy?
He spends a lot of time talking about how he doesn't like the new text book. Never gives more than one example one how to solve a problem. I would do better reading the book and taking a placement test. Attitude is condescending. Doesn't care about students. He's just another professor in it for the status.
This teacher's expectations are quite high for a sophomore level mathematics class. I never got the feeling he really wanted us to succeed as he was just interested in having the students jump through hoops to please him. The guy knows his math, but I do not really think he likes actually teaching it.
I do not recommend this teacher. He bases alot of his grading on personal critique. Full letter grade off HW for not labeling your page numbers. He is lazy and teaches on powerpoint sitting down most of the time. His lectures are poorly executed and difficult to follow. When he asks the class what to do next you could hear a needle hit the ground.
Don't expect an A on HW assignments; lots of points come flying off your grade based on fairly subjective reasoning. I am 4.0 student who will be LUCKY to get a B in his class. Lectures are dry, very fast paced and deviate from the book quite a bit. Honestly, if lecture wasn't mandatory, I'd only show up for the mid term and the final.
Diff eq is a hard class as it is, but with Kidoguchi, it's at a whole new level. He moves fast and can be condescending. That said, he really knows his stuff and will be helpful if you have questions. If you like math, you'll appreciate the difficulty, if you don't, you'll hate him. He tries to trick you on tests, so watch out.
Ken is fantastic! Saturday labs, answers to homework, mock exams...he gives his students every opportunity to do well. Lectures are fast paced and he has a lot of rules for submitting assignments but nothing unreasonable. Take his class!
Kens teaching approach was nice, with the focus on applied problems and how to use the formulas to solve them, rather than drawn out proofs. Class aimed at engineering students rather than math majors. Posted all notes and HW keys. Tests are very hard, often with trick problems, and grading can be on the harsh side. Cheat sheet allowed on tests.
Ken is the best math teacher I've had at PCC yet. His lectures were to the point. If I ever had questions, I could ask him after class/during office hours and he was helpful and not condescending. Saturday labs are a great even if you don't end up needing help. He's strict about homework formatting to help prepare you for calculus, which is great.
Kidoguchi's class is very clearly designed with solely his convenience in mind. His lectures are all done in power point and are dull and un-engaging. I was sure he was kidding when he said that our Differential equations class would be as paperless as possible, but he was not and it is ridiculous and invigorating.
Tests are filled with trick questions; cheat sheets allowed. He grades harshly; does not curve final grade; lectures are all PowerPoint and do not help much. He is nice enough and funny, but makes you feel stupid. The only reason I still have a 4.0 is because I withdrew (which I have never had to do before) after getting a 56% on the second exam.
A bit condescending. Test questions are much harder than any homework problems. Aced all prior math classes, failed his. Yes trick test questions.
Mr. Kidoguchi's lectures were very unclear, and difficult to decipher. He does not understand how to communicate new ideas to students effectively. Unless you are a math whizz and want to spend at least 5 hours per day on learning marerial independently, you should take this class with someone else.
Ken's class is HARD, but this subject is hard in general. If you take diff eq. from Ken you will come out with a ton of knowledge. He structures the class around the majors of the students. He can be a little snarky, but if you have a think skin you'll be fine. He is super passionate about math and will give you a broader context for the material.
Ken is someone I would consider consulting when I want to firm my understanding of what I already know. He is DEFINITELY not someone I would want to learn new concepts from. He is very friendly and willing to help out when you have questions, but that really only is beneficial if you have lots of free time. VERY inefficient overall. Tricky tests...
TERRIBLE professor. DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASS FROM KEN!!!! Very confusing, fast pace, allows cheat sheet on test but tests are VERY hard! I had a 3.96 gpa until his class where I got a 62%. Out of our class of 25, 7 students failed and there were 3 A's. Does not grade on curve. Take anyone else.
Ken is a very nice guy, funny and entertaining. However, his class is not easy. HW is assigned from the book but lectures never cover the material fully. His powerpoint usage is annoying and tests are quite hard. Cheat sheets are allowed, but unless you somehow understand everything he says in class (which is a feat) you will surely fail them.
Ken was a very difficult teacher. He talked to his students about math like he would talk to a mathematician about it. His exams were very difficult, and he is not very passionate about math. Oh btw, enjoy the pop quiz on the first day.
Ken is very passionate teacher. His lecture are very knowledgable. He uses proper mathematical language in his lecture. Exams are not really hard but questions are linked to each other. If you work hard during Mock Exam you will definitely kick ass his Exams.
If you're trying to skate by then go elsewhere. If you're exciting about learning how to do DE then take Ken. Ken is at class early to help, Ken is at school on saturdays to help. Ken is available at office hours to help. Mock exams are very similar to actual exams but NOT EASY. If you work really hard you'll get an A or a B.
Ken was the man who inspired me to really go for it in terms of my education. He came across a little harsh at first but you'll learn its his humor, beware his classes are tough you will NOT skate by, however if he is very helpful, GO to his Saturday lab sessions you will learn a ton. If you really want to get good at math this is the guy.
Ken goes through lecture a little more quickly than some, but gives lots of quizzes (group) to help you understand the concepts. He has plenty of office hours and is more than willing to explain concepts to you more than once if you don't understand, but you have to go to him. I would take class from Ken again and would suggest taking his classes.
Professor teaches rigorously. Will mark you down lots of points for the smallest things on homework and tests. He gives practice tests but they aren't remotely close to the real tests and makes tests tricky in an attempt to weed out all students, except geniuses. No curve. No partial credit on tests. Only class I've taken twice. Good luck!
If you work really, REALLY hard you might bet a B. I do NOT RECOMMEND KEN!!! Lectures are confusing, he grades really tough. His classes have a high failure rate.
First, you as a student should recognize that math classes are going to be tough from here on out. The whole math department stresses proper analysis and providing proper format will be imperative in a professional setting. Grading is strict and explanations can be murky at times, but Ken is available like no one else to explain further if needed.
You do the homework, which is plentiful and has solutions provided. You take exams. No book, no attendance needed. If you're smart, you don't even need to come to class you can do the homeworks and learn from that. If you keep on top of it, you should get an A.
One of the best instructors at Sylvania for math. Do your HW and revise it regularly. Prepare well for the mock exam and an A grade should follow.
Ken is a funny guy, and he is always on time. Unfortunately, he is one of the worst math instructors I've ever had. If you ask for help, he will basically say "you should know this" and walk away. His lectures are fast-paced, he rarely does examples, and it seems like he expects you to already know the material coming into the class. Don't take him
This dude is just terrible! He doesn't follow the book at all!
Ken's lectures took up the whole 2.5 hours of class and yet, I didn't learn a thing. I would have to spend hours every week teaching myself the material that I was supposed to be learning, he teaches the material as if it is a review. If you ask him a question, he acts as if you should already know the answer. Not helpful, Not fun. DO NOT recommend
I personally found that he was passive aggressive at times, and seemed annoyed if you asked for help. He also left vague comments on homework, and lectures weren't well explained.
Rushes through lectures and sends you on your way. If you're confused he won't go out of his way to help you. His group quizzes and mock exams are jokes, easy way to boost your grade without understanding the material. He doesn't check the student's answers or solutions so you have the blind leading the blind. Ken is a good guy, but a bad teacher.
Ken is a great math teacher. Besides being humorous, he is always willing to meet outside of class to cover the material. He uploads every file to the class's website, making it easy to stay organized. You will have to put in a great amount of effort to receive a the grade you want, however if you do the HW and master the "mock exam" you'll be fine
Ken is a great teacher. Besides being humorous, he is always willing to meet with you outside of class to cover the material. Ken is by far the worst math teacher I've every had. He's chill as a person, but as a teacher he's awful. He assumes we know everything and skips through explanation and examples in his powerpoint because we don't have time. I found myself struggling to learn anything and had to spend my weekends trying to teach myself.
"Let's say you're in a pub" and you just signed up for Ken's class ,order another drink. Very little homework but lot's of group work, so, not for those with social anxiety. Mock essays can prepare you for his short exams. You paid for the textbook and you'll need it. Ken is available Saturday labs which is gold. Think Mr. Miyagi with a hoody.
Very polarizing teacher. He can be extremely sarcastic and you will definitely need to use the book to supplement the lecture. I found that he was a fair grader and gives you the tools to succeed. His class is extremely tough, but by the end I felt that I understood the material very well. It seems like people either love him or hate him.
Print out all lecture notes to fill in. Sits in chair with hands on his head instead of standing in front of class and engaging students. Assumes everyone gets it the first time. Doesn't seem genuinely concerned with whether or not students understand topics. Blames students for not doing well and not teaching style. If genius, you'll be fine
Most of the reviews here that are negative are because they want these classes to be easy. Want to breeze through a class, switch your major to art. No, sitting through the lectures alone wont be all you need to pass the class. He hosts Saturday study lab where you will get a much friendlier Ken with solid answers to your basic questions.
Best math professor in PCC, period.
Ken is one of those professors that "gets turned on" (something he regularly says) by thinking he is a difficult teacher. Lets just call it what it really is. He is a bad teacher. Very fast low quality lectures. Then he has the nerve to test unreasonably hard. One midterm and a final worth 80% of the grade. Would probably get turned on reading this
I have taken every math class avaliable at pcc and out of every instructor i've had Ken is THE BEST teacher i've ever had. He teaches his classes 100% from the perspective of physics and engineering. He loves and cares deeply for his students and wants them to succeed. His class is challenging, but he is preparing you for whats to come. 10/10
Ken is great. He is pretty funny and a great professor. His lectures are well thought out and easy to follow. He makes a mock exam for each test (including the final) and has groups of students present the solutions. The test questions are nearly identical to the ones on the mock exam. There are also a lot of ways to get incremental extra credit.
Ken was my very first college math professor. First off, he can go through lectures pretty fast and not as in depth. While this is frustrating, if you ask him for clarification, he is more than happy to help. He is always available if you have questions. He is extremely sarcastic, funny, and relatable! Very clear expectations on tests.
Never met a worse instructor in my entire scholastic career. Math is one of my passions. I dropped the course immediately because of this instructor's teaching style. His philosophy is that math is important in the engineering fields therefore anyone taking his course must be weeded out so they do not become one. Pop quiz on chapter 1 first day.
