a good prof!! kept everything interesting, and made the course good! the final exam was amazing, but the assignments and essays were hard.
Great prof! Passionate and funny. Enjoyed the lectures. Don't skip lectures! He offers notes online but they're missing a ton of detail and most of it is on the exam! Would definitely take other courses he teaches
Great class - don't expect to breeze through it, a lot of thinking is involved, and participation marks count - you have to speak up. Otherwise, great prof, great lecture style, I would definitely take another class with him.
awesome prof. really interesting. makes you want to go to class!
Ken is such a great prof! I've had the privilege to have a course with him @ Ryerson during the Spring semester. I enjoyed his way of teaching the material and also his great sense of humor! I recommend Ken to anyone who's up for a fun/interactive class. Oh and his assignments & exams are super easy if you study and prepare well enough.
Professor Kirkwood was the only reason I kept coming to his class. He taught the material extremely well, and has the highest level of enthusiasm. He cracked jokes here and there, and he was completely cool. His exams are awesome. Keep up the great work! And for those registering in this class, you'll be lucky to have him as a prof!
Kirkwood was an amazing prof. He made me want to come to class everyday. His use of examples in class was not only helpful but most of the time they were hilarious as well. Anyone would be lucky to have this prof.
GREAT prof. funny, enthusiastic, really made the lectures worth going to. It's no bird course, but he made makes any material seem interesting and really wants you to understand. I definitely recommend him
Yeah!
Best prof I've ever had. Keeps you focused and interested the entire class. Make sure to do the readings and attend class and the exams will be easy.
Amazing prof all around. Go to class and do the readings and you'll be fine for this course. He presents his material in a way that is conducive to his students success!
BEST PROF EVER!
amazing prof, made lectures worth going to.. keeps your attention the whole lecture, class is not exactly easy but stay on top and you're fine
MOST AMAZING PROF EVER! His class is lots of fun! you're basically set for this class if you do the readings and attend the lectures. he makes the material interesting and fun.Ps- the final exam has lots of repeated questions from the midterm, so make sure you see the midterm to check for mistakes.
He is a great professor in class! Very enthusiastic and keeps you at the edge of your desk. However, his exam questions are not that fair as they lack clarity. He also doesn't seem to care about his students outside of class. Once I emailed him without any response. Wish he was a nicer person outside of class.
"Nice guy" both in class and outside (generous w/ supplying lecture notes if one is legitimately ill, but his exams are another story. Examination protocols (cheating preventing, etc.) needs improvement, he leaves himself vulnerable here. I was somewhat shocked. TAs were very poorly selected - No help there.
Took this class expecting a bird... little did I know they changed the syllabus from a class free of tests to one with 2 of the most ambiguous, minor detail-specific tests I have ever taken in my life. I have since started practicing Christianity because only the good lord knows how I managed to get an 80 in this class.
By far the funniest prof I've ever met in my life. His lectures are enthusiastic and makes you actually want to do to class. So far I've done well on the assignment, the exam shouldn't be too difficult, seems pretty straight forward. Even if I did end up with a bad mark I still think he's awesome.
easy exams
Dr. Kirkwood is the best Health Sci professor I've had thus far. His lectures are engaging and concise and they rarely fill the full time slot. The textbook readings are dry but they aren't long and the majority of exam questions come from the lecture.
Exams were straight forward, great energy, entertaining, and very easy to follow concepts. Great course all around! But he kind of stinks at responding to students' emails with a clear answer...
Great prof great person. Very funny. One of my favorite courses of undergrad :)
Horrible prof. Grading consisted of group proj-45%, health proj-10% pass or fail, and an exam-45%. You go into the final not knowing the way he examines. Turns out he likes to ask the most minor detailed irrelevant textbook q's -like how many servings of grain a 19 yr old should have. Didn't realize we were supposed to memorize the CA food guide?
Absolutely Horrible! Cuts each of his lectures in half and so you don't even cover 15 % of what is expected on the exam. The exam was details pulled from literally the index of the textbook. i went to every lecture and took detailed notes however was a complete waste of time considering i was not tested on any of it.
Definitely wish i didn't take this course. His HS2610G course is completely different and super fair, but the final exam for this course is horrible. He said that the material would be taken from key points and definitions from the textbook, then tested on super minor details. It will drop your grade dramatically. My lowest mark of the year.
Rounded my 79 to an 80. Enough said.
Kirkwood is actually such an amazing lecturer. He is super relatable and to the point. test questions can be somewhat unclear at times but overall no tricks. Doesn't believe in multiple multiples so you won't have to worry about those!
Best Class I've ever taken. NO FINAL EXAM (new as of this semester), 10% of your marks is making 10 tweets about health. You have to show up to class because he will ask you 6 questions on random days (worth 30%) but if you answer them you get 100% on them. Prof is a huge beauty, awesome to listen to. Highly recommended
Funniest professor I have ever had. He actually makes the topics seem interesting.
Kirkwood is such a dad! He has great stories, a great lecturer and makes class worthwhile. Take as many classes with him as you can!!!
K2 was one of the best professors I have ever had and definitely wish that I could have him for every class. 110% take his class if possible.
Dr. Kirkwood is one of the best professors at Western University. There is a reason why he is praised. He was my favourite professor in 2nd year Health Sciences.
Kirkwood is an awesome professor and has a story for everything - which really helps when studying for his exams. The exams are all based off of his lectures and readings which overlap & makes it easier! The major essay wasn't easy but he was always there to provide feedback on your thesis and essay in general. Would take a class w/ him again!
Best health sci prof I have ever had. Very straight forward with what is expected on exams just need to go to class. Very funny and always tells a lot of stories. Essay was not as bad as expected lots of help available. Would take any class he's teaching.
SOLID PROF. If you have the chance to take a class with him do it. he really wants everyone to do well and doesn't like how Western bell curves down. I took this class when there was no final exam. Just in class pop quizzes and a video project. 10/10 would recommend.
Loved the guy and his lectures, but that final exam just ruined it all. So specific and basically told us not to memorize something, and then puts it on the exam...
Absolutely disgusted by his choice of final exam questions. He should be refrained from ever pretending to care about any mental health related issues, as it is clear that he purposefully tried to ruin our mental health in an already stressful time. He should really get some practice on how to write a normal exam. I DONT RECOMMEND THIS GUY AT ALL.
good prof but that was honest to god the hardest exam I've ever written
Great lecturer but should hire someone else to write his exams... they are awful, test minute detail, and irrelevant information.
Absolutely hilarious lecturer - very entertaining. But outside of class? He doesn't exist. He will not answer your emails for days at a time and when he does he will not answer your question. He took weeks to give us a rubric for the 40% essay so we knew what we were doing.
I loved his lectures, and he was super helpful when providing advice for the final essay.
amazing proff, and a great lecturer, overall such a funny guy. Definitley attend class!
Honestly a great lecturer, entertaining, funny, etc but exams are extremely fair as he will test minute details from readings that are so irrelevant so you will get every question wrong even if you studied hard, unless you offhandedly remember some random detail. Final was over 85% readings, no lecture - what was the point of attending class then??
This professors lectures were always funny and he added a personal touch to each one. The final exam was worded funny. Overall his lectures could be hard to follow at times but overall very fair and caring professor.
I loved this class and his lectures. Essay grading criteria was sort of unclear however the content of this course was great. He never responded to my any of my emails though, just a heads up.
Prof Ken Kirkwood is the most amazing prof I've ever had in my entire undergrad career. He is the most genuine and caring person, and you really tell that he has his student's best interest at heart.
I was nervous about Ken's on-line, podcast formatting for his lectures, however they ended up being very engaging & enjoyable. Vague formatting criteria for the essay, which made for a bit of a stressful couple of weeks. Nonetheless, attending his open office hours was helpful to hear other students questions & for personal clarification. Go Ken!
Wow, what a ride. I cant say Ive ever had a prof like Dr. Kirkwood. I appreciated him recording lectures for us, but Im not sure it was the most effective way to learn. Hes a funny guy, but can get really off-topic. He also marks the assignment pretty hard. I honestly dont even know what this class was.... an interesting experience.
Bless this man. He is so understanding and takes the stress away. I've had him twice and both courses were amazing. He has a great perspective and makes the content really interesting - gives the students room to join the conversation and develop their thoughts. Great guy, great prof.
Ive never met a more caring prof. probably the best prof Ive had at western. he actually understands that students have lives outside of school and is easy on accommodations if you ask.
Dr. Kirkwood is an awesome prof! Extremely accommodating, funny and easy-going, he really did make my semester better. The way he talks makes you want to listen. One of health sci's gems!
Let me start off by noting that I've never went out of my way to rate a prof - too much work. This man is an outstanding exception. No exaggeration at all, the most caring and empathetic prof I've ever met. No professor I've seen devotes their time and emotion to their students like Kirkwood. Dumb character count, I have so much more to say
Terrible prof. Audio records his lectures so it is so difficult to follow along and take notes. He also rambles a lot so it becomes even harder to learn from his lectures.
Extremely terrible prof who makes this great course into a living nightmare. He does not include any slideshows during his lectures, only podcasts where he rambles on about random stuff. Would NOT reccomend.
This is the first time I am going out of my way to rate a prof. He is the definition of taking course material and transforming it into the most engaging content as possible. I have not experienced a better 'lecturer' in my whole education.
Best and funniest prof. Makes lectures so engaging and connects it to real life stories, really allowing you to process all the information. I never write reviews but I came on to his page to see what other courses he teaches 11/10
Great examples in class that make content rememberable and interesting!! Also a very funny and caring professor!
Dr. Kirkwood is the most engaging prof I've ever had. His lectures are extremely interesting and the course content is applicable in real life situations. The exams were difficult for me and tested some specific details that I didn't anticipate so make sure to study hard but overall great course, great prof, and for me, I had a great TA too.
I always found Kirkwood's lectures to be engaging and interesting. The content of the course itself is fascinating and he presented it in a very organized manner. Kirkwood cracks lots of jokes, is an overall really friendly guy, and will always take time to answer questions and try to help students succeed. Exams are also pretty easy.
His lectures are always really interesting and engaging. An overall really funny, friendly guy who will take time to answer questions and try to help students succeed.
I'm baffled by all the good reviews here. The content of his midterm/exam tested unimportant one-liners from the articles. Unfair, esp considering that he explicitly said he'd be testing the important ideas. The TAs that grade the 50% essay are also awful (at least mine was), the "feedback" provided was easily rebutted by examples in my essay.
Readings are very important! Content will be tested, and glancing past them isn't going to work for the final. Highly recommend going to office hours if you have questions regarding the essay, Prof Kirkwood was extremely helpful. TAKE NOTES! There is a lot of testable content that wasn't on the slides given. Overall a really funny and caring prof!
The sweetest professor, finds a perfect balance between giving anecdotes to help the learning process without overdoing it or rambling about irrelevant things. Exams weren't bad as long as you stay up to date with the content, essay was marked a little tough but overall a great class and an amazing prof!
An absolute G. If you like healthcare ethics, or just ethics in general, this is the course for you. Dr. Kirkwood is very respectable and understanding, and his lectures are delivered like podcasts and he always welcomes discussions. 4610F is an essay course, so you would be handing in a big essay. All in all, one of the best profs you can find!
Kirkwood is an amazing prof! Keeps you engaged through the entire lecture.
Prof Kirkwood is the best professor I have ever had. He makes lectures very enjoyable and easy to listen to. He presents content in a very good way and his assessments are very fair.
Amazing guy. Keeps lectures entertaining, simplifies concepts and is always available to help. Also assigns a reasonable amount of work. Definitely one of the best profs at UWO.
By far the best prof I've had at Western. He cares about his students, his lectures are amazingly fun, and he assigns an appropriate amount of work whilst grading fairly. I will be taking more classes from Kirkwood in the future.
I agree that Kirkwood is super funny and gives great lectures, but I felt as though concepts were oversimplified in class that left you inadequately prepared for the difficulty of his exams.
Really tried to make lectures engaging and relevant! His exams were straight from his lectures and very fair. Only beef I have is the essay grade I received, which was honestly probably graded by a TA and not Kirkwood. I think being a health sci class the essay rubric was not well enough defined so watch out for it and ask for help if you need it!
Probably my favourite HS prof, no exam but assignments are worth a lot however had more than enough time to submit and ask for clarification and pointers. Big essay.
You're basically guaranteed an 80+ in his HS4610 course as long as you try a little. If you get stuck, he points you in the right direction and tells you exactly what you need to get a higher grade.
Interesting and engaging lectures when attended, but trying to review lectures afterwards using his slides is impossible. The slides are extremely bare-bones which makes it hard to understand things if you didn't hear it said in-person or don't remember. Also the readings of this course were some of the hardest to understand I've ever seen.
Final exam was EXTREMELY unfair for no reason. Just another typical FHS prof who assumes every university student has an eidetic memory and who doesn't care about students' understanding of the topics presented in the class.
Really great lectures, funny and engaging. His slides aren't great, but manageable for studying. Not much content in the class so do all the readings for the final. For the essay, really depends on the TA, just hope you get a good one.
wont answer you, pretty much messes up on everything there is to mess up on!... plus you will most likely end up paying for it in your grade. his final is crazy and will probably screw up on it because his questions are literally all tricks.. he hides lecture slides from postings preventing you from leaning on purpose. avoid this prof at all costs
- fun prof - his slides are just random memes and no words and aren't helpful at all and confusing af - completely unorganized, don't expect him to reply to your emails - his lectures are unorganized too, he just changes topics every other sentence - not a helpful prof at all - 45% essay that just depends on your TA who all mark bad
The TAs are quite harsh markers when it comes to the essays. On average I have mostly received As on my essays, ranging from high 80s to mid 90s. However, my essay received a mark in 70s after receiving writing support and utilizing all recommended resources. So get ready to work extremely hard if you want a high grade on your essay!
Very accommodating prof. Course lectures were discussion based, very enjoyable and interesting (little to no content as one big project encompassed the entire grade). Project itself was very enjoyable to complete (got to pick our own topics, choose something youre interested in and it will be fun!), fair grading as well. Would recommend.
4.1 is crazy. The final exam for this was one of the most unfair I've ever written. unless you have a photographic memory of the readings you will not pass his exams. He spends more time trying to be funny than teaching the content in a way that makes sense.
The marking scheme for this course is rather unforgiving - 45% essay, 40% final, and a 15% open-book midterm. The content of the course is interesting, but the exam questions are tricky. He slaps "all/none of the above" on almost every multiple-choice exam question so make sure you know the exact details of the lectures and readings
Prof is really funny and tells interesting stories in his lectures but the final exam was really specific questions about readings and lecture content. Also must go to lectures as his slides are pretty empty and he says a lot of important things in the lectures.
Crazy final with specific details that you need to know and there could have been two responses for questions not to mention the "none of the above" options. He also does not answer emails at all and some students did not even get feedback on their essays
Great prof, loved his lectures, but his final exam was tough. He was kind enough to individually curve everyone's final grades. The essay depends on your TA, you either get lucky or don't, but they're kind enough to listen to your concerns as to why you deserve a better grade, but have a legit reason not just "I think it deserved it a 90."
