Looks like a mad scientist
He does a lot of in class experiments that don't always work the best right away, but he's hilarious to watch because he's super jumpy.
ken is a great teacher, he's the reason i'm a chem major

very easy to get along with. Makes it worthwhile to attend his lectures. I would take another class with him.
I recommend Ken. He's very entertaining, and explains things well. He keeps things interesting unlike other proffesors.
Maybe I should thank him for this, but this class made me realize that Chemistry is not the area for me. Terribly boring. Whether he was a good prof or not is debatable.
Lectures move at a great pace and he does lots of entertaining experiments. Exams are rough but does review. If you keep up with the class should be fine. Really great guy
Ken is hilarious; class is entertaining and tests, while not easy, are passable. I recommend any class of his.
Ken is an awesome professor!! Take him if u can!
Ken has the ability to explain concepts in a clear fashion. His test question may be somewhat tougher than the homework questions, but the test questions really are mere applications of the concepts he has done in lecture.
Ken does a great job, and keeps lecture interesting. His tests are sightly harder than the homework, but if your prepared, you'll do well. He's more than willing to help a student out. I would recommend him.
Class is tough, but he is willing to help and knows his stuff. Lectures are kind of boring, but overall, if you are up for a challenge, then I would recommend Ken for 1022 because he's a good professor, it's just a hard subject.
Excellent professor! Much better than Doreen, from what I've heard from people who've had her. Definately take his class if the choice is between those two.
professor sucks, he rambles on forever during lecture, includes may uneccesssary facts that confuse the issue. Writes test as if he is planning to trick half the class, very unclear.
Chemistry is a tough subject to learn but his tests are passable as long as you do the "homework" problems and keep up with lect. and reading. I would recommend him.
Ken is a great prof. My friends all thought he was really hard, but if you put the work into it (do and understand the online HW, at least glance over the chapter before the test, attend all lectures, go to the review sessions AND DO THE PRACTICE EXAMS!!!) you'll do fine. If you do all that, you'll see that it's actually a fairly easy class.
Ken is a good professor whose class is very fair. He teaches what is on the test. If you put in the time u will get a good grade. It is a hard class compared to 1021 but Ken made it resonible. Would take it another class with Ken again.

I loved Ken! He genuinely cared about his students and was very informative. The best chemistry teacher I have ever had!!!
Great professor, keeps me awake and interested
This guy rocks! He's hilarious. An exact mix of Jerry Seinfeld and Woody Allen. He's extremely clear and his tests are fair. Take him if you can!
Very funny professor. Good mix of nerdy and funny. Lectures do get quite boring at times but if you ever need help, he explains things in under 2 minutes that makes sense to you. Tests are pretty hard, but reasonable if u study.
Very good prof
This professor was really easy. The lectures were fun and interesting. I actually wanted to go to them. The professor is clumsy, but that's what makes the lectures fun. I would highly recommend this professor for Chem 1021.
Hilarious!!! I wasn't sure if anyone could match my chem 1021 teacher, but Leopold is surprisingly entertaining and makes things understandable! better than the other 1022 teachers from what I hear...

Kenneth is the man, I took 1021 and 1022 with him and he is marvelous in both, even better in 1022. He lets you know pretty much what he wants you to know, but reminds you to do the homework and assigned readings. He is funny, and predictable in a very good way. A great teacher to have especially taking 1021 first semester in college.
Ken Leopold is amazing. That's all I can say. This was my most dreaded class going in, and I loved it by the end.
One of the best chem teachers out there. He can answer any question you have no prob.
Leopold knows his chemistry quite well. He will definitely make you laugh and even teach you a thing or two. I would say he is the best intro chem teacher at the U.
Far more interesting than the crazy guy who plays guitar outside of the lecture hall.
Highly recommended
One of the best professor there is, and he's also the advisor for chemistry majors. Makes the class interesting, his exams are fair, and he's a great guy who will go out of this way and stay with you to help you out. Spazy, clumsy, genius. We love him. The U of M has the best chemistry department there is.
His lectures were so helpful in understanding although a lot of times getting looong. Reading the book just confused me but lectures clarified everything. Do the study tests and go to the group test preparation meetings. They really help you get an idea of what ?s will be on the tests.
I definitely agree 100% with all of the comments below. You will not find a better professor for introductory chemistry.
I LOVVVVVVVVVVVVVE KEN!!!! He is the cutest little man, soooo excited about chemistry, and will make you love chem even if you hated it before.....his tests are fair and if you study, you really should have no problem doing well- if you had and liked Driessen- he's pretty similar except even easier
im taking 1022 with him this semester and hes a really funny guy...but i just realized something....he cant stand his glasses on his face! if you realize, he will take 'em off like every 5 min... :) HILARIOUS.
Great teacher, very funny, makes chemistry easy.
Ken is awesome. I didn't do anything outside of class and I got a C because he is such a good teacher. Take Chemistry with Ken if you are cool.
Best Chemistry Professor!!!! He is funny and is awesome at teaching, if you read the book, go to class and do the homework you will do well in the class.
I don't know why people think he is easy. I though he would be easy and I took chem with him. He is so hard. the avg. for the first test was 63%. Last semester I got an A- but now I am struggling in this class.
It's not an easy class but he does a really good job of explaining things in a simple way. Plus he's just such a sweetheart.
There is a huge gap between his classes and the exams. Actually the book is more useful than lectures for the exam. The exams are pretty tricky. know very well the concepts and study hard the previous exams. they are far from being easy. but he curves the exams. the average of the exams are about 65% which is a C+ with the curve.
Awesome professor. Manages to bring humor into a 9AM general chemistry lecture, which is quite a feat. If you are unfortunate enough to have to take Chem 1022, take it from this professor!
his lectures are pointless and not helpful. the notes he gives you in class do not help with his hard exams. i didnt attend class for the whole 3rd exam sessions and got an A on that test. concentrating on the book and the old practice exams is a better use of your time than watching him derive formulas.
He has a passion for teaching and he is good at it. Class can get boring because he goes through things very throughly, which can get extensive. He is fairly fair on his exams.
BEST Chem professor EVER! He is SO passionate about what he is talking about that it makes you want to learn it. I have never been really good at Chemistry but after taking this course, as long as you attend class, and do the suggested problems, it is pretty easy/fair! I would recommend him in a second!!
Nice professor but has difficult exams... focuses on how to generate proofs, even though no one really cares. Recommended because he covers most of the material in lecture compared to other profs, but reading the book is a must.
Nice guy, but his notes were hard to follow, especially when it came time to studying for the exams. Tests were alot harder than the practice exams, although extra help is always available
Lectures are sometime hard to follow, but thorough. Prepare to work hard to get a good grade, but you will feel like you learned something at the end of class. He loves what he teaches, and is funny and enjoyable to listen to. His tests are hard, study the book and old tests.
Has great notes! very clear teaching, would love to take a class from him again!
Lab is great, Leopold is like a Chem Professor version of Christopher Walken.
He's a good professor, the class isn't easy though. Exams are tough but curved.
He is a great teacher he is very much in love with chemistry. His test are straight forward and very easy if you do the reading and homework problems.
very good teacher. his in class demonstrations and examples were top notch and full of humor and lots of fire. very cool stuff.
great effort and enthusiasm when teaching chem 1021.
Leopold is a great teacher; he knows his stuff. He's very easy to meet with and is more than willing to help you with any tough concepts or problems. His love for chemistry is apparent, and he makes the class interesting by relating things to everyday things. Exams are tough, but he usually enhances grades at the end of the semester. Do the hw.
Very popular professor and I can see why. He loves chemistry and his lectures are entertaining. He funny and can almost make you like Chemistry but I think his biggest down falls are his exams are painful. You're tested on lab, lecture and the book. His notes are disorganized, he does not write down every thing he says. So pay attention and read!
only class i didn't fall asleep in. use the sample midterms to get use to his way of writing tests; notes are more important than the book
Midterms were hard but doable, however the final was extremely hard. Pay attention in class and organize your note since his is very sloppy.
WOOO!
I love this man! I wish he was my dad because he is the coolest professor ever!
He knew what he was doing
Great Professor! Has a good sense of humor and his notes are a lifesaver! If you have the chance to take Leopold I would def. recommend him! He is AWESOME!
The worst chem prof ever. He's not a bad person, persay. But he can't teach worth a darn. His lectures are completely worthless. I shouldn't have bothered to go to every single one. I would have been much better off teaching myself. If you value actually being taught or even learning something, I suggest that you avoid him at ALL COSTS.
He is an alright professor. However, he is definitly over-rated. From all his ratings I thought that he would be above and beyond, but he is just average. He is kind of jumpy so it is difficult to keep track of what he is talking about. He does examples which is good but I wish he would let you try the examples on your own first.
Sometimes it seems that you are being overlooked as a student in such a large class. I personally have experienced this after taking the WRONG MID-TERM for the first 1021 exam. However, in the end professor Leopold has the best interest of the student foremost in his agenda. He knows what he wants to teach you and how to do it. Favorite teacherever
This guy is the man! He is really funny and his lectures are informative. His tests are straight-forward, and he keeps it real! Highly recommended!
A great professor. Going to lecture is extremely helpful, as that is where he takes the material for his tests. Practice exams are the easiest way to study. He actually writes down everything you need to know, so you don't need to bother listening. Just chat away and write stuff down occasionally.
Good Professor, very intelligent and wants everyone to do well. If you read and stay on top of the material the class is extremely easy and stimulating. Take Leopold if you get the chance.
Same format as 1021. Interesting lectures if you can pay attention. Tests are decent plus he provides study guides to see exactly what to read out of the text book and what questions to practice. Easy to get an A if you put in the effort because there is a generous curve and the majority of people seem not to care how they do.
Awesome! This guy recently won the IT Week Faculty Award, and for good reason. His lectures are - dare I say it - entertaining! He will answer questions at any time and does not put questions on the tests that do not come directly from the lecture material. As both an instructor and a researcher, Ken Leopold sets the bar for excellence.
Leopold is the best chem teacher I've had by far, he really knows what he's talking about!
He is wonderful.
Professor Leopold is an awesome teacher! his lectures actually make sense, and he keeps them fun by doing a lot of experiments. He is always open to answer any questions that you have. If you pay attention in lecture and read the book you will get an A for sure. Definitely recommend Leopold for any chem class you're taking.
Not as awesome as everyone says though is unintentionally funny.
He is very scatter-brained and is hard to follow. He fell behind a lot and at the end of the semester I felt rushed to learn all the material necessary in order to pass the exam. Watch out for tricky questions on the exams because he likes to put a few in them. Study hard and devote your life to chem and you will do well in the course
a challenging class, but he does well teaching it. i would recommend getting some background on the material before each lecture because it is fast paced. his tests can be tricky. be sure to learn concepts and be able to apply them because that is how his exams are set up.
Some may find him scatter-brained, but I understood him very well and enjoyed how he presented the material. He would stop to answer class questions. The tests were hard but if you use the class notes it's not terrible. He follows the textbook but doesn't teach directly from it. Very approachable and cares for students. By far my favorite prof!
I really enjoyed Professor Leopold. He is absolutely engaging in class, well as engaging as a chemistry prof can be, and really is in love with his subject. Though I found the class quite difficult, it is very achievable to get a good grade if you put the work in.
By far the best professor for CHEM 1021 and 1022. He's a genius, but he knows how to simplify material the perfect amount. He's hilarious and adorable. He makes a dry, difficult class entertaining. Still pretty difficult, but he's really helpful. Do ALL the homework he assigns.
"can I get a happiness check?" who's Happy? Who's absolutely miserable about this? Who's not voting? ... um ok! any questions?" yeah I can answer that!" This is really cool" I swear this is supposed to work!" Aha! it does!!!!" He's a great guy, and knows the material, doesn't mean it's easy. It's just hard subject. Study hard and enjoy the lectures
I had him for both Chem 1021 and 1022 and he is by far the best professor yet at the University due to his interactions with students, humor in lecture, and willingness to help. You have to study for this class since it is chemistry but he makes it really fun. He definitely needs a pay raise.
very genuine professor. straightforward. do the old exams, and homework problems assigned. crucial to really understand concepts, and apply them on exams.
He is a great professor! super friendly and helpful. His tests are very fair and cover what he goes over in lecture. As long as you study your notes you will do fine on the tests. I would go into office hours frequently and it was very helpful.
Nice guy, likes to teach the material. Tips for a good grade: DO THE HOMEWORK, it is key to doing well on the tests. Be careful for Exam 2 it is the difficult one. Do the practice exams. Read the book chapters and watch out for the final; avg was about a 50%, questions had trick answers and were not difficult I felt stupid after seeing the answers.
His exams are hard, not gonna lie. Do the homework WITHOUT THE ANSWER BOOK. You may struggle through it, but it's nearly the only way to REALLY do well on his tests
Leopold is such a cute funny teacher! He makes lectures as interesting as he can and has the classic crazy scientist hair. Downside is that the exams are extremely difficult!! Do the practice problems in the book and get help for concepts you don't understand.
Fantastic professor. I hate chemistry and he actually made the class interesting. I loved his stories and analogies. Definitely made the class engaging and tolerable. Tests are no harder than any other chemistry professors. Extemely willing to help students as needed
Ken Leopold is the greatest Chem professor ever. He is so entertaining, and very straightforward. It's a difficult class, but if you pay good attention and do every practice problem you will be just fine. Leopold is very fair, if you put in the work, you'll be rewarded with a pretty good grade.
As others have said, Leopold is one of the greatest professors ever! He makes chemistry fun, lectures are definitely worth going to. If you have to take chemistry, take it with Leopold!
His lectures are amazing, he makes sure you understand the material, and the side experiments are always interesting!
Favorite prof
Highly recommended. Good Chem-Humor
Amazing professor, one of the best I've ever had in my LIFE. Clear, simple to follow, awesome demos, and worthwhile going to lectures. Tests are a bit tough, but what test isn't.
If you plan on taking this class, Leopold is your guy. His lectures are very easy to follow and he presents the subject in a clear, concise manner. He may throw you a few curveballs on the exams, but midterms are not supposed to be easy.
All these other comments are a bit misleading.. He seems like a very nice guy but I personally find it hard to learn from him. Tests are extremely hard and are difficult to prepare for, the real tests have been much harder than any practice test. I have A's in every other class I'm taking but can't figure out how to do well in this class.
Really helpful teacher, I should have gone to class more. Only problem is there are no homework grades, so the 3 midterms and final are the only grades you receive. If you can do well on those tests, you're goldan.
Favorite professor! He always spoke clearly and wrote out super clear notes to copy down/understand the material. Homework is optional unlike in the other chem classes, but you can get up to 2% extra credit added onto your grade for doing it. Tests were straightforward, nothing unexpected. He really cares if you understand the material. Loved him!
Ken makes the lectures interesting. He has multiple experiments almost every lecture that illustrate the main points of the lecture well. He curves tests fairly and offers extra credit via an online site. Some people only buy the online access ($50) versus an entire book ($160) and say it worked but they never told me their scores. Probably works.
Dr. Leopold gives clear, concise notes and many helpful examples. Has the best demos (blows things up a lot) that actually help demonstrate relevant concepts. Delightful sense of humor and a passion for chemistry. No required HW, but it's suggested if you want to do well on tests and get 2% EC. His tests are fair. Excellent professor.
Leopold is extremely clear during his lectures, and makes them fun and interesting. Demos were done every day in class, always making it exciting to go. Absolutely recommend to anyone who has to take chemistry.
WONDERFUL professor. Every lecture he does "happiness checks" and makes sure the students understand the material. If they don't, he goes over things over and over again. He really takes his time if we get stuck. But be careful, as all chem classes, he moves fast and the tests are challenging! HIGHLY recommend him, I'm very grateful to have had him
His lectures are a GOLDMINE. I barely read the textbook, and when I did, it wasn't explained half as well as he did. I thought I could get away with not going to lecture but quickly learned that it was the key to success. Like all intro chem classes, it's hard, but if you have to take 1062, take it with Leopold-he's one of the best profs out there.
Go to the lectures.
Dr. Leopold was extremely great at demonstrating principles and teaching the material. However, he did teach it quickly. Exams were easy, and the final took questions from previous exams. Take CHEM 1062 with him if possible.
Ken is a great professor. He does an incredible job of making difficult chemistry concepts seem pretty easy. As long as you go to lecture, read the book, and most importantly do the ALL the practice problems he gives you this class is not difficult at all.
He is a great professor who knows how to teach. The final grade of the course is based on three mid-terms and a final exam. This is a major reason why I liked him. There are extra credit HWs but you don't have to do them. His mid-terms are based on lecture notes and they consist of multiple-choice questions only.
Really clear lecture notes, writes everything on the board. Also makes study guides before each hour exam. Never bored during lecture, and understood everything. Even though lecture is really large, he answers all questions individually. Also incorporates lots of examples and experiments, which are not only fun, but also help make things clearer.
I wish I would have never taken his course. He has made me hate chemistry. He is very degrading and is unable to give straight answers to questions. I will never take a class from him again!
Very clear and helpful
Kenneth Leopold is the man. His lectures are brilliant and clear. He teaches to his exams and will answer questions openly on the fly. He is extremely nice and approachable (Use office hours!). I went from having no extensive prior knowledge of chemistry to a Chem 1061 expert through the guidance and expertise of my Boi Ken Leo.
He is a very nice professor who definitely knows his stuff, but go to his lectures or you will not pass. Doesn't use the book or give homework, class is based entirely off of tests that are difficult but fair.
Ken Leopold is a great guy. He is so enthusiastic and explains things really well. His great attitude make his classroom a pleasant place to learn. He loves helping students and answering questions and doesn't make you feel intimidated.
Great professor! As long as you go to all the lectures you will be fine! I did bad after the first test and went to talk to him, he helped me figure out what I was doing wrong and was very approachable. BEST CHEM PROFESSOR AT THE U!
Leopold is such an amazing professor. He genuinely cares about his students and is more than willing to answer questions without making you feel dumb. His lectures are very clear if you read ahead of time. If you don't you might get a little confused because he isn't good at putting things into layman's terms. Put the work in and you'll get an A.
Really nice guy, loves his subject dearly! Cares a lot about students enjoying and understanding material. My only complaint would be that his lectures are very example-based, and it's sometimes hard to grasp the ideas behind the examples. Reading the book usually clears that up.
Really helpful, and definitely passionate about chemistry. If the lectures ever go too fast, he takes time to answer each student's question individually, even in a 300 person lecture. Tests are hard, but he's an amazing professor. Practice finals are VERY helpful.
He writes everything on the white board & is very straight forward as to what you should study in order to succeed on the exams. He gives study guides for each test and will really only test you on the things that are discussed in lecture. No surprises there. He wants his students to succeed & is very approachable. His happiness checks are nice :)
Leopold's lectures are extremely helpful and if you go you will do decent on the tests. The exams are hard but if you work for it you won't have a problem doing decent in the class. By far the best chemistry professor at the U of M and I would recommend him to anyone that has to take chemistry!!
95% of the grade is tests. He's a great professor, really clear with everything. Definitely recommend.
He's a very nice guy who always asks his students if they have any questions. However, some times he goes on tangents that makes it confusing to pick which parts are important and which are not.
Does a great job with lectures. Most of the grade is tests, which aren't too hard if you go to class and read the textbook. Would highly recommend.
Leopold is an incredibly kind man. He takes time to make sure that his students fully understands the concepts. His goal is to let all students pass. He truly cares about the success of his students and you can tell that he is extremely passionate about the subject. One on one, you could come in without knowing anything and leaving with a phD.
He's incredibly nice but is not a very good teacher. If you don't read the textbook before class, expect to be lost. He speaks too fast and doesn't go over ther material well enough. I never knew what section he was teaching.
Leopold was great with helping each and every student if they were confused. Make sure to read the chapter before you go to class when it is taught and that will clear a lot of things up (the book isn't too bad either). Good Professor, STUDY FOR TESTS--IT MAKES A DIFFERENCE
Leopold is a great teacher. He is probably my favorite chem teacher I have had yet. He is goofy and interesting.
My favorite professor ive had in college. He'd a genius and very funny. Class is not very hard.
Ken Leopold was a very solid professor. I had him for CHEM 1061 & 1062. He is really passionate about Chemistry and it shows in his lecture, he makes a lot of nerdy jokes but they are funny. His lectures are good and they are integral to getting a good grade.
Leopold is just an amazing professor! He is so nice and willing to help; definitely take advantage of office hours! He tends to do happiness checks throughout lectures because he wants to make sure that everyone understands. Do the assigned hw, get help when you need it, and the midterms should be fine!
Overall a very good lecturer, one of the better professors I have had at this University. What Ken does well is teaching the concepts in a fun way, he adds interesting experiments in lecture to further understanding, and he leaves you with a good deal of understanding in the theoretical basics of chemistry which prepares you for the midterms.
Prof. Leopold is probably the best prof I've had from the chemistry department. He is extremely knowledgable about the subject matter and he makes his lectures fun and interesting through jokes and enthusiastic ways of teaching! I would totally recommend taking him for you gen chem classes. His tests are ok if you study for them, but not an easy A.
Great lectures, got me interested in chemistry again after a long stint of hating it during high school. Leopold keeps a good pace, has very clear examples, and works out problems on the board - a very good combination.
Chem is obviously one of the more tougher classes out there but it helps if you have a teacher like Leopold!
Exceptional teacher. Very knowledgeable. Charismatic, passionate guy who prepares you well for future chemistry classes. Do practices problems!
He is a really good teacher and if you attend lectures, take notes, and study before the tests you'll be fine. Just make sure to do ALEKS while you're studying that section because it helps cement the concepts.
Excellent lecturer, organizes notes beautifully, at the end of the semester its like having written your own miniature textbook from his work. Does fun experiments that are topical, reviews for exams well, and overall makes chemistry enjoyable. Wish he could teach every class.
Great lectures, very friendly and helpful. I would definitely recommend this professor.
Great lecturer, he really knows what he's talking about. Explains concepts really nicely and makes sure that everyone understands. Best chem professor I've ever had!
Wants to help students do well.
Lectures well, does happiness and understanding checks nearly every day. (raise your hand if we can move on). Office hours are useful and he's forgiving on homework. rWants students to succeed. Not afraid to be corrected.
Amazing teacher! TAKE HIM IF POSSIBLE! Good lectures, pretty decent tests. Gives practice tests to take. He's a funny yet helpful teacher! Does cool demos. Best professor I've taken! 10/10 would recommend!
This class is going to be challenging regardless of who you take it with. It's a "weed-out" course, but Leopold made it a little more entertaining to study Chemistry. He interacted with students during class (in a 200+ lecture) & tried to keep things exciting.
Amazing demonstrations! I started to suspect Gen Chem was Leopold's excuse to blow things up! I didn't find the course too challenging. If you did well in high school chemistry, you should be fine here. While the lecture coursework was a breeze, the lab took a lot of time and energy.
He is fantastic, and his he gives practice tests that are very similar to the tests.
Great lecturer, but be prepared to work for your grade on the exams!
His tests are extremely hard and 100% of the grade, so if you don't do well, you won't pass.
Ken was one of my favorite teachers this past semester! He's funny, engaging, and his demonstrations are awesome! He explains things clearly without being condescending. He is always willing to answer questions during lecture. If you listen carefully and study hard, you should have no problem getting an excellent grade from him
He's awesome omg
I had Ken for 1061 and am taking 1062 from him as well. He tries his best to involve the students in his lectures, and his demonstrations are generally very interesting. He is a little quirky and I find him quite hilarious at times. I used him for a scholarship recommendation and he was more than willing to help me with it. Great guy and professor.
He is a really great professor who takes the time during his lectures to make sure he explains small details and keeps the students interested. The exams were not that hard and you definitely feel more prepared in his class compared to other sections.
Great professor, you'll enjoy his lecture especially the class demonstration. His exams are pretty straight forward, study and you'll do well. I found that doing the book problem was the most helpful because the exams were similar to the problems you'll do.
I loved Leopold as a professor so I took his lecture for Chem 1061 and Chem 1062. His lectures are very clear, and his tests are very fair. If you pay attention in lecture, and do his practice exams, you shouldn't be surprised on his exams. One of the easier chem professors on campus.
I absolutely hated chemistry before taking prof. Leopold's class freshman year. Now I'm minoring in chemistry. He made lectures interesting and upbeat. Test information was fairly from lecture notes, but be ready to read the textbook and do ALEKS! It helped a lot, trust me. Especially if you're planning on taking 1062. Overall would recommend prof.
I suck at chem. He is very funny and passionate, but it doesn't make sense to me and I cannot read his writing for the notes to save my life.
He is a great professor. Tests are easy and his notes are great. if you go to lecture you wont even have to read the book
Prof. Leopold is awesome! Take his class if you can. He's super helpful and cares about his students. Go to office hours to ask questions or just to chat.
Professor Leopold is definitely the best out of all of the Chemistry professors but he does have his weaknesses. He does happiness checks during lecture to see how everyone feels about his explanations but his explanations can be very fast and I find reading textbook more helpful than office hours. Tests are harder than I expected.
Bets chem professor I have ever had. Very clear lectures and always willing to help outside of class. His tests are easy as long as you keep up with the work. Do Aleks and read the textbook, it is helpful. Overall an amazing teacher and I would recommend him for any chemistry class!
Leopold is the best professor. He makes a three hour night class every Tuesday interesting and something I look forward to. The experiments he does are fun and he truly cares about his students. I email him with questions often and always get a prompt reply
Ken is a nice guy and clearly very passionate about chem. However, he really isn't the greatest teacher. I almost think sometimes that he's too smart and doesn't know how to dumb the material down and explain it well to students. Your whole grade is based off of 4 exams and the lab was absolute hell. Wouldn't recommend taking this unless required.
Originally I was with a different professor and switched into Leopold's class and I am extremely grateful I did. He has really great lectures, and it sucked that it was 6-9, but he made it worth it. He really cares about his students and wants them to understand and know the material. Do the practice exams, practice problems in the book & pay att.
Mr. Leopold has a clear passion for chemistry. He makes it very fun and enjoyable. His exams are focus mostly on the lecture so taking notes is vital. Overall im really going to miss Ken :(
Ken does cool experiments and is always happy. He does go over the lecture materials very fast and it feels like he's talking to grad students. The grade is based off of 4 exams, which is a bummer. The exams are nearly the same as previous years' but the qualitative q's are tricky. But hey - one guy won a Pearson award for acing all the exams!
Required course for many students at the U. Leopold was a great teacher that brought many fun aspects to the class. He taught the 6-9 class which became a drag after the first hour and a half.
Leopold has interesting lectures and lots of fun demonstrations, but make sure to keep up and take good notes because he hand writes his notes on the white board and then erases them, and if you miss something or don't understand it the first time, he doesn't post anything online.
As someone who is pretty awful at Chem, I found Leopold's class to be quite challenging. His tests can be difficult, and while he tries to keep his lectures interesting with in-class experiments and happiness checks, he moves quickly through the material, and I often found myself lost. That being said, he's approachable and cares about students.
Lucid lectures, and fairly decent quizzes. Homework was optional, which saved a lot of time from Aleks. He cares about his students, giving extra time for exams. Lectures are long but interesting, lots of experiments to keep you interested. Has a "science" look to him with his wild hair; would recommend him over any other professor at the U.
Exceptional professor. He is one of the few profs I've had so far that shows genuine care for his students. He goes out of his way to make sure you understand the material both in class and during office hours. He even gave us an extra 20 minutes during exams and made the ALEKS system optional. Awesome sense of humor and lively teaching style.
Dr Leopold is an amazing Chemistry lecturer. He is very clear and straight to the point. He does many examples on the board, and answers questions thoroughly. He likes to write on the whiteboard though, so I don't know how others in the far back can see. His tests are clear and straight to the point, even has practice ones. ALEKS is optional.
Good professor, keeps your attention and explains concepts well.
I had to retake chem, and I'm so glad I had Ken the second time around! I got a much better grade and actually understood material. I used to hate chemistry but he helped me become more interested. He is incredibly friendly & funny, and is simply a great teacher. Definitely recommend him!
He is such a good lecturer and is so caring and understanding of the students! He does these 'happiness' checks once in a while to see who's 'happy' with the material, and he really shapes his lectures to the students. Leopold does these little experiments here and there, provides practice exams, the way he uses Aleks is easy and exams are easy too
I took a W in CHEM I 1st semester because I had Prof. Arriaga (AVOID him unless you like confusion). Leopold is a 360 degree turn from what I had 1st semester. He is clear & concise about what he wants you to know, & he really cares about your learning the material and is willing to talk with you anytime. He's a great person and teacher!
You can tell he is truly passionate about chemistry and that he really cares for all students. He even does "happiness checks" during his lectures. Chemistry itself is a hard course and the lectures can get a little lengthy and boring but Leopold always throws in some demos to wake everyone up. Best professor i've had so far!
Amazing professor. Really interested in the topic. Exams are not worded the greatest. Read every chapter and did all the practice problems but still did not do well.
Professor Leopold was a great professor, he really knows what he's talking about and does well in making sure you know what he's talking about, too.
This semester I don't have kenneth for 1062 and I miss him so much. I had him for 1061 and he explained thing so clearly, and as someone who hasn't had a strong background in chem it was so nice. He is an excellent teacher and wants you to do well. If you take him, you will love him. Take him.
Leopold is a great professor. He gave very clear, well organized lectures. You can tell that's he wants his students to succeed. Would highly recommend
The criteria is tough, but he is amazing.
Ken is great. Make sure that if you're not understanding anything to hit up his office hours as he's a greta help in smaller groups as well as very open to answering any questions you may have about him, his research, or the Chemistry Department as a whole. He pointed me in the right directions many times, I highly recommend taking his lectures.
I LOVE professor Ken. Honestly, I haven't laughed this much in a chemistry course granted I only took intro before this. he is simply amazing. the material is tough but enough practice and you'll do well. the exams are very similar to the practice exams so utilize them. I'm very worried about Chem 1062 now that he isn't teaching it.
Really funny and nice professor. Keeps lectures interesting. That said, tests are tough so make sure to use the textbook and really understand the material. Sometimes he gets so excited that he talks really fast and it's hard to understand whats going on, especially with equations. Utilize the study guides and previous exams.
Kenneth Leopold, otherwise known as Ken, is a very peculiar prof. He conducts experiments often (which really gives you a visual on what you are learning in class). Also, he has decently funny chemistry puns. I would highly recommend Kenneth because he seems better than the rest of the Chem 1 profs.
By far the best professor I had. He goes over the material that you need to know for the exams and homework very clearly in lecture. If you don't understand something, go to his office hours. He can explain things even better one on one. He truly wants you to pass the class with a high grade.
Ken is super nice and makes chemistry lecture somewhat enjoyable, especially when he does experiments. He sometimes flies through material and although he does "happiness checks" no one dares raise their hand if they are not happy because they will feel singled out. He also makes aleks optional which is awesome!
Ken tends to go fast, especially when doing calculations. Although it can be frightening to ask questions in such a huge lecture, he is amazing during office hours and does a great job of explaining any concepts you may be unsure of. Midterms and final are more difficult than what you learn in lecture, but they're fair. Do the practice tests!
I'm pretty sure I failed this class but not even that could dull my love for this man. He's seriously one of the best teachers I've ever had. Chemistry just sucks no matter what.
I know I dont have to tell you again to take this mans class, whatever it may be. He is an amazing teacher and funny and just adorable, what a smart guy but also what a teacher! He is so patient with learning the material and does a great job explaining things. I read the textbook a few times but if he doesn't mention it then it wont be on tests!
Leopold is a great lecturer and a funny guy. His notes were so thorough that I barely opened the textbook. He also does a lot of interesting demos. Take advantage of ALEKS and the practice tests he posts.
Great professor, caring and funny guy but really tough class.
Such a great professor, really smart and knows what hes doing. Amazingly thorough notes, I never had to read the textbook. All of his tests were fair and only ever covered topics discussed in lecture
Leopold was my favorite professor. Go to lecture and take notes and you will do well. Definitely take advantage of practice tests and lecture examples. Go to office hours. He always answers everyone's questions instead of brushing them off which is really nice. I'm sad hes not teaching Chem 1062 this year. Overall amazing lecturer and person.
Very entertaining lecturer. Doesn't use powerpoint, so if you don't come to class you are in trouble.
He's a very solid prof. Takes time to answer everyone's questions and gives very engaging lectures. His tests aren't hard per se, but there's a lot of pressure because the entire grade is the midterms and final. Worth taking this prof, especially if chemistry isn't your forte.
This is the best professor I've ever had in college. He made chemistry actually make sense and made it so I actually enjoyed the subject. If it weren't for Ken, I probably would have hated first semester
Chemistry sucks in general, but Leopold makes it so much better. I look forward to his lectures every week. He seems to generally care about his students and their success. He also does happiness checks in class which I love.
Great Guy makes chemistry down to earth. No clicker used in this class! Exams are a little hard but there is a guideline on the syllabus about the curve which is helpful. Aleks is optional. Overall, a great guy who loves to teach and share knowledge and loves his student. he has a true passion for chemistry. Exams are on Saturdays :(
Very clear and instructive lectures. Does a lot of fun demos to keep you interested. Even though I loathe chemistry still loved this professor. Never had a teacher ask so often if we were happy.
I really enjoyed his lectures. Not only did he communicate each concept clearly, he made them fun. Its also great to see his passion of chemistry radiate the room. Due to this, hes always ready to answer any questions and help any student. The tests werent that bad as long as you studied.
Fun lectures, cool demos, fun personality. Tests were pretty easy as well.
I found his lectures to be excellent. He does a great job of explaining concepts and makes the lecture engaging and fun. His tests are easy if you pay attention in the class. But, be prepared to take notes, he does not use slides or presentations. Everything is written on the board. Make sure to ask questions if you have them.
BEST PROFESSOR. I'm a Mech E major so this a required course, but KEN BLEW ME AWAY. What a guy
I am a chem major and truly have loved chem every-tim I've taken it. Until last semester with a different professor, I received my first C in college. This semester I took Ken's chemistry 2 and have aced all the midterms. Not only is he absolutely hilarious, but engaging and fantastic. I enjoy going to his lecture every day. 10/10 would recommend.
Ken is amazing. His lectures are easy to follow and he makes the topics very easy to understand. He posts past tests online which makes studying very easy. The class can be challenging, but if you go to lecture, do the book problems, and the practice test then you are well prepared for the midterms.
Ken is the best! His lectures really prepare you for the midterms, but it is no walk in the park in terms of content. Make sure you go to class, all of his notes are written on the whiteboard and show up nowhere else. Use the previous year's tests posted online to help you study for exams.
Ken is a wonderful professor and person. He is very helpful during office hours. If you have the option to take CHEM 2 with Ken, do it!
His lectures were great, I read the book as well and easily got As on the exams. He sets his class up so it matches the book and it is very clear what will be on the exams. He seemed like a great person and someone who loves his job.
Ken is an amazing professor!!! I was upset when I couldn't make a lecture because he makes them so engaging. He is very good about answering questions during office hours or after class. If you get a chance to take chem 1062 with him, do it!
Ken is the best!! His lectures are very organized and easy to follow. He is great at explaining concepts and really cares about his students. He also provided lots of practice tests, which was very helpful. Homework was optional.
Prof Lepold is fantastic... MAKE SURE you have ken and not doren it makes a huge difference. His lectures are auctually fun and interesting. He makes sure that you understand the topics through numerous example, and he loves to get lunch or have students in for office hours to work on probs. DO THE PRACTICE EXAMS if you want to do very well.
Leopold is my favorite professor from freshman year. He clearly teaches you everything you could possibly need for the exams in a visual way. He really cares about his students and does his best to engage them with anecdotes and demonstrations every lecture. I recommend doing the book problems in addition to ALEKS (if he continues to use it).
Prof. Leopold was awesome! He had fun lectures with demonstrations and was very good at communicating with students. You can tell he loves what he does and he wants us to understand. I am taking him for CHEM 1062 as well. Three hourly exams and one final for grades, lowers grading standards so it's easy to succeed.
There're only four exams that count for either your entire or majority of your grade. Besides that, Leopold is an amazing teacher. I personally love his teaching. All the notes are written on the board so you have to go to class to get them; however attendance is not taken. He regularly checks in with the class to see if we get the material or not.
An awesome professor I like him very much. He wants you to do well and does everything he can to support you!
This is my second review and class with Kenneth. He is SO good at what he does. Great, understandable, sometimes funny lectures. Really loves chemistry and teaching. Super kind, approachable guy. What I like the most is he is just a simple, great, smart professor! Chemistry comes easy with him. Tests are kind of hard, but he gives great prep.
What a guy. Ken explains things very clearly and cares a lot about his students. The material isnt too hard but he makes it much less intimidating. Make sure to do the practice midterms, the problems usually are very similarly structured to the real tests. Great class, especially for someone who was nervous about chemistry. Highly recommend.
Ken Leopold is probably the best STEM professor I've had at this college. Was a bad chemistry student, and he makes it so much simpler and easier to understand. Make sure to do the practice exams + lecture videos and you're set.
THE BEST CHEM PROF. The class seems scary with four exams, but Ken makes his tests exactly like his practice tests (take good lectures notes and complete textbook problems also). He made me love chemistry and I was never that way; if you should go for any professor, it's him. Caring and ready to help always.
If you have the chance to take a course with Ken Leopold, do. He's a caring professor and overall just a very genuine guy; his lectures are very entertaining. As a person with a disability, he's been very understanding and accommodating; I've had strict chem professors in the past who just make life more difficult but he is definitely the opposite.
Ken is the absolute best Chem professor I've had! He's a bit fast paced during lecture but always pauses and makes sure that everyone's on the same page. His demos are always so fun and I actually feel like I'm learning in his class. His passion for teaching and educating others really shines through with him. Try to take Ken if you can!
Amazing Professor! Definitely take him, you won't regret it.
Amazing professor. He brought back my love for chemistry after a string of bad teachers. He lectures well and his demonstrations always make sense and aren't just for show. Hilarious guy and cares about his students. He answered emails quickly even during spring break. 100% recommend. Only thing I dislike is I can't take him again :(.
3 midterm 1 final cumul. STUDY old tests he gives. 20questions per test need min18/20 for100%. USES MCGRAW HILL 4 HW! better thanALEKS! 25%final,60%midterms15%hw. 85-100for A,72-77for B, 55-64for C. access to all past recorded lectures. lecture notes reused from previoussemesters andmatch oldlecture vids. do practice problems/old test and ube good.
Entertaining lectures with many experiments, but you need to pay attention in order to understand the concepts. His tests were difficult for me but there is a big curve.
Leopold's lectures were super informative. I had him for Chem 1061, and he was really good about introducing new topics for people who weren't skilled at chem. GO TO OFFICE HOURS! He sits there waiting for people to join zoom and is super helpful. He gives me dad vibes lowkey. Overall great professor and I like that his tests are multiple choice!
Had him for Chem 1071H. Fantastic professor who cares and knows a lot about the course material. Gives good example problems in class and provides fun "experiments" during lecture to demonstrate concepts and lighten the mood.
Really great. Clearly very passionate about subject material and wants to help students succeed. If you can take a class with him I would highly recommend it.
He's a smart guy, but very unclear in his explanation of things. I don't think lecturing is a strength of his.
Prof. Leopold did a great job of explaining difficult content in an understandable way. He went over different example problems during lecture and demonstrated chemical principles through experiments so students could visualize what he was explaining. Between his lectures, ALEKS homework, and textbook problems, students are prepared for tests.
