Very Passionate for the subject matter. Made class very fun, and made otherwise boring literature come alive. I really liked this guy.
Great Teacher! Class was never boring. It's not an easy A; you'll learn a lot and have fun doing it!
This guy is a great teacher. No matter what subject it is, he makes it interesting. I learned a lot from him. He has a great personality. You gotta love the hair-He reminds me of Doc from Back to the Future.
Mr. McAferty is a wonderful Teacher. He makes every class fun.
Interesting and fair
Excellent style. You learn alot!
truly an excellent teacher, very animated and able to make the class fun. he grades essays rather harshly but that is because you are expected to know how to write by this point. i believe his grading style is fair, just watch those essays!
Awesome teacher. Class is interesting and fun. I think he grades easy too. He goes over everything on the tests and essays very thouroughly which is a great help! I highly recommend him.
Mr. McAferty is one of the best teachers I have ever had. I took World Lit I and II with him. He makes class extremely interesting. The test and essays are expected to be college level material. You have to read and work to get an A but it's possible.
Awesome teacher! Very enthusiastic about the subject. Great sense of humor. Always makes class enjoyable. By far, the best teacher I've had at PJC.
Very good teacher. Easy to understand. He has a wonderful sense of humor. Class will never get boring. You gotta love the hair!
Mr. McAferty is a great teacher. Take him for every English class he offers, and you'll enjoy going to class. It was said before but everything is on college level so read and study.
he caqn be fun be also hard
I have taken Mr. McAf. for ENC 1102 & American Lit 2011. Without a doubt the best instructor I have had at PJC. I did not look forward to taking these classes;however,I learned to really enjoy literature due to his teaching style.
Hard ass class but great ****ing teacher mr mac is the best teacher at pjc great sense of humor take every class he teaches
Wonderful professor. He has a sense of humor, unlike any other. Genuinely wants each student to succeed. One of the few professors I actually enjoyed showing up to class for. Take at any chance!
He's a nice teacher, but NOT for ESL student!! I admit that he did very good job in class and teach very useful skills and things. But if you are an International or ESL student, you'll get a hard time with essay except you are really good at English and don't make any errors in your essay.
Bad teacher grades strict and won't help hardly at all. If your great in English take him he is a funny teacher. grading sucked!!!!!
He was a great teacher. He helped with my essays and the quizzes were easy. You do have to read though almost every night. I took it in the summer, so...
I had him for english comp 2. He's a great teacher. Keeps things interesting, explains things well.

He is such a fun teacher, alwasy smiling and has wonderful stores and information to share with his students... i would definately love to take another class of his... and if he's reading this don't forget your old milwakee's best^_^

I enjoyed his class.
this mans something else, theres never a day that he doesnt have a crazy anecdote that keeps us awake, for an english class, its awfully lively, i never resent having to show up for class
Mcaferty- Defined as the guy at the party that everybody loves! Great teacher,I wonder if he always drinks Milawakee's Best? Come on Mcaferty, a man like you screams BUD LIGHT, America's favorite beer! Very tough on grading paper's and loves details, so be ready to write. his literture dicussions have been one of the highlights of my college years
Mr. McAferty is a very enjoyable instructor. He will never let you sleep because he is making you laugh. He doesn't give assignments that are unreasonable. He gives you TONS of time to finish. You can go to him anytime for help. He has been one of my favorite professors. I won't forget you Mr. M! It is pronounced Pick - A - Youuuun! :)
Very hard teacher. Rediculously hard grader. Failed class b/c he didn't agree with my side of argumentative paper.
he is a sweet man. somewhat difficult work, but you never mind doing it for him because he helps so much and is an awesome teacher. take him he is crazy fun!
He is a totally awesome lecturer but he grades totally unfair...i mean i am a smart girl and i got a c+ my worst grade ever...he did make the class interesting but he grades totally unfair...not the tests but the papers that we wrote...
The guy is kinda sporatic, but he's pretty cool.
Mr. McAferty is a great professor. I hate English with a passion, but he made this American Lit class interesting. He gives 4 tests and assigns 3 essays. He also gives reading assignments and reading quizzes every class to make sure you did your reading. If you take notes, do your reading, and work hard, you will do fine.
He graded the paper unfairly. Very stingy and perfectionist.
He's very stingy. He expects you to know everything. Warning: Do not take him if you don't write like an English professor.
He always has a funny anecdote about his dog, Milawakee's Best or a camping trip. He causes the subject matter to come alive. His personality shows through his hair and animated jokes he tells. A wonderful but his pet peeve is essays. He is fair but be sure of yourself before you turn them in.

his grading on essay is unfair, have no idea how he grade essay....
Professor McAferty is an outstanding teacher. He made english comp II interesting and only expects for you to "earn" your grade based on "your own" performance. Clearly defined classroom syllabus and structure lets you know what is expected. Cool, energetic teaching style and personality. I enjoyed him.
McAferty is hilarious, loves to use Milwaukee's Best in examples. Truly makes lit interesting. I had him in '99, now I'm a doctor, and after all those years of school, he still stands out as one of my favorite profs.
Great teacher. Very helpful and energetic. Great sense of humor and explains everything really well. If you pay attention in class you can't help but ace his tests. He grades his essays fairly and has easy quizzes. Really recommend this teacher!
Mr McAferty was fun and interesting. He knows just the right way of getting interesting class lectures started by keeping students involved in the discussions while never losing sight of the subject matter being talked about. Great teacher with a very fair grading system.
DO NOT TAKE HIM! He's cool/a good teacher, but grades SO unfair. He's impossible to please/is WAY overboard with essays (CAN'T get 100)& tests (every question is "short" answer; every test ALSO requires an essay!) & grades totally ridiculous! It's like I'm trying for a PhD to be a writer! I started w/a 3.7 GPA! I don't even want to see the damage!!
Fun, energetic teacher. English comes easy to me, but he was very thorough and good at holding attention. The tests were pretty easy, nothing that needed more than 15 minutes of cramming. There was a pretty light workload for the class; I would suggest taking him.
This dude looks like a nut! But he's cool. Take him for American Lit. Very smart, very easy to understand the class. However, he is a tough grader on essays.Pay close attention to grammer. Go to the class bc usually he has quizzes each lecture.
He's been arriving late and leaving early everyday. He grades based on how he thinks about you not your real skill. He expects you to write like a high school student, so don't try to write creatively at all. He is very particular with grading essays. It seems this whole course is designed for you to see that life is meaningless and depressing.
If you want bad grade and a lot of work, take this professor.
Do not take this teacher!Take Mr. Bailey or Mrs. Wernicke. This teacher is like a high school teacher. He gives you a lot of work and count them unfairly. He teases you in class to make you think he is nice, but he is actually useless. When I ask hime how to improve my grade, he said,'there's not much you can do.' Don't take him if you want good grade
One of the best teachers at PJC! He is funny, very engaging, & he encourages a lot of class participation. Grading is VERY fair: quizzes and tests are REALLY easy & buffer grades--just read & pay attention. Yes he demands quality essays, but he is not unreasonable. He is explicit in what he expects, and he provides examples & helps those who ask.
Great! If you want to learn, take this professor. He is the BEST in the department. Lazy and mediocre students should not take his class during the summer.
Did he pay you guys to write those nice words about him? He is ok but not that great. He taught things you can easily find on line. The way he grades the essay is pretty high school.
Whoever said "his grading on essay is unfair, have no idea how he grade essay...." sums it up. If you have a basic grasp of the English language, and are willing to complete your assignments and show up for class, then it's an easy A. However, if you still don't know basic grammar, don't own a spell check, and expect to be coddled, it'll be hard.
It seems that he tries to be a stand-up comedian. He emphasizes grammar a lot. If you are a high school student and still warm with the basic writing rules you maybe ok. You can find his lecture from the internet articles. Over all he is ok, but for sure he is not the best at PJC. If you're not an early person, he is late for class every time too.
Someone complained that he "emphasizes grammar a lot"? Hello! It's an English class, that's basically the point. I loved Mr. McAferty's class, he always made Literature interesting and his personality was awesome. He gives reading quizzes most days, which are an easy 10 points toward your final grade if you actually read the assigned stories.
I would NOT take this teacher at all! I am not a d student and never have been and I have a d in here! He grades way too hard. I have never had less than a B in college. He is ridiculous no matter how much time you put in your paper!
overall a very easy concise teacher. if you do the work the way and turn it in on. time, there is no way you can fail. highly recomended
Mr. McAferty is a great teacher. Very funny and makes the subjects very interesting. Grades very fairly, if you do the reading, attend class, and turn in your papers you'll do fine. He offers to review papers before you turn in which is helpful. Encourages class discussion and never makes anyone feel stupid regardless of what someone says.
great teacher. knows his stuff. you have to read a lot, but its a lit class, get over it. read, come to class for quizzes, and study for tests and you'll be okay. tests are short answer and essay, but not too bad. he'll help you with essays if you need help. lots of office hours
THIS PROFESSOR IS THE BEST ENGLISH TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD. HE STILL FINDS HIS JOB FUN. HOWEVER THIS IS NOT THE EASIEST CLASS I HAVE TAKEN. IF YOU ARE WILLING TO PUT IN THE EFFORT, IT IS WELL WORTH IT.
very good teacher and would recommend him for enc101. he critiques his essays tougher and tougher each time. The class is not easy but it will get you to try harder to make a better grade.
Mr. McAferty is extremely enthusiastic about teaching. He always starts class with a big AHHHHH... and then calls roll. quizzes almost everyday so read and be there (no makeups). The material in World Lit was not very expansive (a lot of Greek and Roman lit) and the class discussions get a little tiring after a while. Good teacher overall.
Great teacher.
He is great. Very laid back and enjoys teaching. I took a long (long) break from school and he was very helpful when I needed to be refreshed on certain topics.
McAferty was a horrible teacher. He would always come into class no less than 15 minutes late. I had papers graded by other teachers that were graded with A's while this teacher gave me staight D's. Doesnt know much about the English
because i havent taken any of his classes yet, i gave him a middle of the road review lol. he was the brain bowl 'coach' when i tried out, and he is absolutely hilarious. he makes everything interesting and i'd highly recommend him. really sarcastic and smart. he dresses down, jeans and a plaid button shirt. he's just a normal guy
McAferty is a informal teacher to say the least. If you want to learn how to write better and you want college writing skills. Take McAferty. You want an A for effort and do not want to learn from mistakes you need to go find another teacher. He will red any paper, even the A's and B's. If you think your all that take his class you will be humbled.
Don't buy a book waist of your money. I took him during the summer and Got a B. He's grading is hard to catch on to and by the time you do the class is over
He is a great teacher and very entertaining. Everything he has you do is pretty useful however be prepared to write. I think he reguires 4 to 6 papers the year. And be prepared to take a quiz every reading assignment (they are about 7 to 14 queations.) but if you read you'll be fine.
I had a lot of fun in this class. He makes the most boring stories seem a lot more interesting, and he gets the whole class involved. He takes essays seriously and you can tell he loves his job. If you read the assigned stories and poems and TAKE GOOD NOTES, you will be sure to pass. Funny guy and a great teacher!
i enjoyed the class.teacher kept jumping around and contradicting himself.world lieterature was interesting. the material studied was on the test. however the essays are what killed me. never got an A. he pushed me to the fullest.
i have had mr. mcaferty for both comp 1 and comp 2, and plan to have him for lit. he has an open door policy and is really helpful (which comes in handy when he writes on your paper). he is one of only 2 professors in which i can have a clear conscience recomending at pensacola state college
He comes across as funny and nice but his lectures are just his opinion. ALL of his tests are essays!LONG ONES. he will mark them as wrong if not long enough & even if u use his exact words in ur notes.U have 30+ pg assignments EVERY class.
I loved this professor! He takes a true interest in his subject as well as the class. He wants you to succeed. If you complain about his class or make a bad grade, it is only because you are a lazy person.
Kept American Lit interesting, but if you have any concept of what makes a good paper, you will fail. I'm an A student, but I got a C- on my first paper. Met with him in his office and he basically told me to write more like a middle-schooler. I forced myself to do so on the next papers and got A's. Not recommended.
tests are entirely short answer and essay & are very long. I agree with the other postings, he does in fact want you to write like you're in middle school for some reason. He also will mark you wrong if your answers don't match his own (lectures), which are mostly opinion.
He has a really strong Bob Ross/Mr. Rogers vibe going on. He's funny and very enthusiastic about literature, but don't let his nice personality fool you... He's a very tough grader, and all of his tests are short answer with a multi-paragraph essay question at the end. There are quizzes everyday, so make sure you read the assigned stories.
Like all the other comments say, he is a tough grader. He is very passionate about his work, and passionate about literature. Always run rough drafts of your papers by him first. He will always be glad to make suggestions.
This is not a hard class if you come to class, take notes and do the work. I would recommend him to anyone taking Literature. He is passionate about the subject and is always willing to help. If you fail at this class it truly is your fault!
Great teacher. He's funny and has a voice like a radio host or something that you could listen to for fun. Tests are very manageable if you come to class and take a few notes. Very helpful and friendly!
He is an awesome teacher!! He is very interested in the students, and our success. His grading system is very fair. I have taken both English Comp.I&II with him, and intend to take American Lit. with Mr.McAferty also!! Mr. McAferty, You Rock!!!
I had him for Eng Comp1 and Amer Lit he is very knowledgeable about his job very passionate fair. I can't speak for others but he helped me if it wasn't for his help (due to personal issues) i would have failed take him he'll keep you interested. He does grade hard on essays though
he is a great guy not that great of a teacher though and his hand writing is indecipherable. a ridiculously tough grader.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HIM. There are far too many teachers out there to settle for this guy. IMPOSSIBLE grader on papers. I've never made below a HIGH B on one and he slapped a D on the one I wrote in his class that is 20% of your grade! Everyone in my class got Ds on their papers. I had a B and the paper pulled me to a C. STAY AWAY FROM HIM!
I enjoy class discussions and how passionate he is about the material we are covering, but hate his writing assignments and would probably not take him again because of them, he does not teach proper MLA format and grades extremely harsh! Great person and amazing individual to have a conversation with about a story or poem but didn't help me at all with my writing.
He is a super nice teacher, and does like to make conversation. However, he is not an easy grader at all. The highest grade I ever made on an essay was an 88. He is very approachable outside of class, and he is always willing to help edit your essays.
I took Mr. McAferty for all of my English courses. He is interesting and funny. He is helpful if you let him know what is going on. He does give quizzes but they are easy. Just read the story and you get a 100! I love Mr. McAferty and I don't know why anyone else wouldn't!
Not many papers in my Comp 2 class, and they were especially easy. Funny guy! If you need help he will always be there if you have questions.
Actually makes class fun. Breaks stories down and makes them enjoyable
He is a Fantastic Professor, would take him again!!!!!
Great teacher. Funny and engaging.
Great Professor! He is very funny and class is not boring by any means. If you read the stories, it is very easy to get an A!
I'm not a very good student when it comes to english classes but i got and A in his class! He is hilarious and his class is never boring. He encourages for you to come to his office if you need any help with your papers. I enjoyed his class so much that I registered to take literature with him next semester!
An "OK" teacher. I was on board until he felt the need to read aloud stories that contained the "n word " a few times in class. There where other examples he could have used to get his point across
I hate English, and literature, and writing papers but for this class I make the exception (except i still hate papers). Mr Mcaferty is probably the funniest professor I've taken. He made me want to read; and it was a summer B term class so it was a LOT of reading. So worth it though, his discussions are amazing. He's so into these stories.
McAferty was a really good teacher. For AML 2020 expect a lot of reading homework and quizzes based off the reading, but if you look up summaries on the reading, the quizzes are still an easy 100. Come to class and pay attention because all he does is lecture. Pretty funny guy and will get off topic easily.
Discussions are useless, he just reiterates the same points over and over and over again. Feels the need to read to the class passages we were already assigned to read. Goes off on unrelated tangents. Boring. Not a great "learning" atmosphere, if you're looking to skate by, great class to go for but as an English major, not what I'm happy with.
Mr. Mcaferty's class was a lot of fun, he will have you laughing at all of his sayings. Obviously a writing class and you will be writing 3 or more papers. Overall an easy grader.
McAferty is funny as hell. He is a tough grader but actually, cares about his students. All English based courses require papers that's just what it is. He's super chill and gets some good conversations going in class.
What an awesome teacher! He relates story to real life scenario. Took him for English 2 and American lit. He will help you out of class as much as you need it. If I had to take another lit class I'd choose him again.
My favorite english teacher to date. Came into this class as a 17 year old right out of high school AP Lang, and it was still very easy for me to obtain an A. Always gave amazing feedback for my papers (only 3 the whole semester!) and even offers his editing if you show them to him early. Gives many reading assignments but all short.
Half the time hes ranting about unimportant information. Hes a nice teacher, but his grading is all over the place. I missed a day where we read a short story and had a quiz the next class. Did not read it but put random answers and got all of them correct. Same with tests. For the essays, good luck reading his hand writing.
HARD paper grader, and even harder to read his handwriting. He is willing to help, but you must listen to what he goes over in class, show up on time, or you will not pass.
Honestly, a great a teacher and ,overall, an easy class. However, his grading when it comes to essays alone are very harsh.
Only use of book is to assign stories that can be found online. Super nice teacher, grades essays under good criteria. You can't do nothing and pass this class, you have to do the little bit of stuff he assigns you and it is an easy A. There is a quiz on almost every short story you read but they are pretty easy.
Reading most days, but thats expected from a literature class. Reading quizzes given most times after reading, but theyre easy if you read carefully (also some are dropped at the end). Mcaferty makes class fun. Make sure you pay attention during class because he likes to call on people.
I had him for English Comp 2 and am currently taking him for American lit. You do have to read, and he does give quizzes, but if you do the reading, you will be fine. As for the essays, I felt like he graded them fairly, and he gives you the chance to show him the essay before!!! Its due so he can give you feedback. He is a great Professor!
Professor McAferty is an excellent teacher! His classes are very entertaining and make tests much easier when you pay attention! There is a quiz almost every class, but they are just an overall summary of the story. A textbook is required, but all stories are online, no it's not exactly needed.
McAferty is my favorite professor at PSC. He's wonderfully caring, thorough in reviewing stories and story elements, hilarious with his commentary, and is helpfully thorough in his grading of essays. I would recommend to anyone needing to take English comp 1 or 2 to take him.
He's a good guy, and okay teacher, however for people who have a lot going on in their own life, he is not a good choice. You have reading assignments and tests at least once if not twice a week. Your essays? Yeah those are 40% of your grade. He doesn't do extra credit. I normally love English, and essays for that matter. But he was just a lot.
McAferty is my favorite professor that I've had at PSC. His class made me love to read and write again, which I haven't felt passionate about in years. He makes learning fun 10/10 recommend
