He is awesome!! I'll be trying to be in all of his classes if I can help it. He's funny, makes it interesting, and is always there to help & explain.
I really like him a lot. He encourages you to come to him with questions. His tests are a little challenging, either you know it or you don't. He doesn't throw in any trick questions. I'll be trying to stick with from now on.
I recommend having Dr. McDowell. He has powerpoint & study guides which really helped me out a lot. The extra points & curves are nice too.
I have had Mr. McDowell for two quarters now and still do not like his teaching methods. Many students ask him questions but he does not know the answers. He is straight to the point, but does not allow things to sink in for the students
I've stuck with Dr. McDowell since 107 & I have really learned a lot. He tests on things that we need to know for our major, not on things as if everyone were a Bio major. I WOULD TAKE HIM!!! 2 THUMBS-UP!!!!!
I like him so far. I like how we have access to notes on the computer. This helps with studying. Not sure how his exams are yet, but I've heard he is more laid back then Stachler.
He's a nice prof, but I think he makes his exams harder then what they should be. I studied really hard for our first big exam and got an F. I think he words his questions to be confusing and to make you think there is more then one answer.
He's not the easiest prof in the world but Ill tell ya... hes absolutely ADORABLE!!! He reminds me of a smart little owl for some reason...
Expectations of students knowledge unclear. What he tells you to study is misguiding. Nice guy, but that doesnt do you any good on exams.
If you are taking these classes for the nursing program....stick with McDowell. It will come back to you when it comes time to put it all into theory. He is engaging, knowledgable, and it isn't his fault if you come to lecture and exams unprepared. A++++++++
This one strange little guy. Avoid him if possible.
I only had him for lab. He seemed to go off for no apparent reason a couple of times. Not bad otherwise.
Professor McDowell made this class much more difficult than necessary. His lectures were highly unclear the only saving grace were his study guides from which most of the exam questions came. He insulted our class and for lecture read directly off his power point presentation.
I HAVE ONLY HAD HIM FOR LAB, BUT HE WAS VERY HELPFUL AND MADE THE CONCEPTS THAT WERE UNCLEAR FROM LECTURE CLEAR. I STRONGLY RECOMMEND HIM.
If you are struggling with anatomy then he is the right teacher for you. I never thought I could graps the concepts as well as he enabled me to. however, if you have any personal issues do NOT expect help. I was diagnosed with cancer 2/3 of the way through the quarter and he wouldn't give me an inch.
I think McDowell is the best biology teacher I have ever had. He was very clear on everyhing. He made me feel comfortable enough to ask questions and he would always give very clear answers.
makes the subject interesting, and easy to understand and learn
He was pretty hard. He was the first professor I had that didn't have notes or any handouts. You truly work for your grade.
Relentlessly difficult, speeds thru lessons, not much empathyor personable
He test completely off of his powerpoints and lectures and curves if test scores are low. He is very helpful by email or if you stop by during office hours. Wish I could take him for 143!! VERY SMART!! Great professor!!
Smart, but does not TEACH the (lab) material. He more or less throws it out in front of you, and says "learn it." If you ask him a question, he responds, but does almost nothing to really help the student LEARN the material. I expected better from an experienced PhD. Very slow at posting test grades, frequently shows up late for class.
Great professor. Very willing to help you understand the material after class. Actually wants you to do well and understand everything. Tests from his notes and if he doesn't cover something that's on the test, he'll throw the question out which is exactly how it should be! Would definitely take him again!
Excellent instructor. McD provides everything you need to know in concise and easy to understand slides. Textbook very rarely used in quarter. Hope to take McD again next quarter.
AP 143 is a difficult subject so but he tries to make things very clear. He really wants you to fully comprehend the material and so his tests are hard. In all fairness, he has extra credits on his exams. He takes about 2 hours to posts tests scores - QUICK! Hard teacher but then again, hard subject. Don't take Phyllis Williams for anything!!!!!!!!
Very monotone teaching style, teaches topics very quickly with little to no review, I recommend Klopfenstein for lecture and lab! =]
horrible!! dont suggest him to anyone unless you want to memorize the whole book for tests!!!!
McDowell is a great teacher considering what a hard class this is. He takes the time to break things down into something understandable. Anything he doesn't go over isn't on the test and he gives great study guides. As long as you study hard you will pass. I highly recommend for any A&P class.
This professor does not need to be teaching. He is not in a way to help students do well in class. He wont answer your questions but in class or in Lab. He gives study guide and does not follow them. Not even one question will come out from the study guide. He is mean and does not care about your carrier.
If you attend class regularly and follow lecture notes you will do fine. McD breaks down the information to try to help students understand information. I have taken him for Bio 141, 142 and 143...he is GREAT!!!
Dr. McDowell is a great teacher. He breaks down the information into real life situations you can understand. The class is hard to begin with and all these people leaving negative comments don't realize that they would have the same problem with any teacher because it's the same material. I had him for 3 classes and got no lower than a B in any one
Do not waste your time unless you wany to live and breath this class. Tests are impossible. Class average was 60%. It did not matter if you study the book or take notes or use the power points. None of this material was helpful for his tests.
He was a horrible teacher. he was extremely rude to his students. He made us feel like we were really stupid when we had a question or didn't understand something. He would get mad if you asked a question about something he just went over, even if you didnt understand it. I would recommend NOT taking him! he is worthless in lab as well.
He is not at all helpful. He doesnt like to answer student's questions.
his test are really hard, they do cover most of his power point and some of his lecture in class, but you really have to know the info. and study-study-study
Took him for a condensed summer class and still came out with a B. Hard subject matter, but he does his best to put it into understandable terms. You still have to study, people! He's not the easiest, but is a good teacher.
Avoid this teacher at all costs. This an entry level course taught like a grad. class. Not fair. It is designed to run-off students. You will be sorry and your GPA will suffer if you take this man. Choose your professors wisely and read what others have shared about this guy, it is not good.
Don't let the others comments scare you off. This is just a tough class. You have to put in the study time to pull off a decent grade. He does want you to know a little bit more detail then others. He is always willing to answer questions. I would take him again.
Good Luck taking this class. A lot of material is covered. Strictly from P.P.A lot of the test questions are not gone over in class or on any study guides, if he even gives you one which is unlikely. Do Not Recommend taking this class
He must have an evil twin, because these comments do not describe the person I have for 143 at all. He's friendly, helpful, and invites questions. His explanations are clear. His tests are hard but fair. It's a hard subject. If you don't want to study, don't take it no matter who teaches it.
You may as well just read the book and hope you studied what the test will cover. This guy's lectures really don't prepare you for his tests. And his delivery isn't very interesting. I would say he seems "dis-engaged" from the process of teaching. He does his thing, which isn't much, and you are on your own. Good luck
People complain that he is monotone and unexciting but he is clear with every topic he teaches and he follows a logical outline by following the text. He is always willing to clairfy any questions that he is asked. HE may not be exciting but he will help you learn a great deal and in the end that passing grade is what counts.
He was a great biology teacher. I learned alot from him that will help me later on down the road.He is very helpful in that he will answer your questions. You must come to class because alot of the test questions are based on lecture material. Use powerpoints first then textbook then study guides. He gives extra credit too
Great Teacher!!! If you come to class and pay attention you will learn a lot!
He is a wonderful teacher! He explains everything very clearly, test questions are from lecture and PP's. If he doesn't cover something in class it's not on the test. Take notes, study PP's and listen in class... you'll do great!Best Bio teacher ever!
Already registered to take him for 142 and hopefully he teaches 143 winter quarter. Print out the power point slides, come to class, take notes. It's that easy. I stopped bringing my book because I never used it. SUPER nice guy! Entertaining! wish all my teachers were just like him. If you fail, its because you didn't study. That simple.
This is a hard class but this professor makes it even harder. He wants to take this to a graduate level for a 100 level class. He cares about his students and will work with you for test situations. But he is a hard teacher and you will need to put in lots of hours studying to get an average grade. If you can take someone else do. Good luck!
Very helpful! Mr Mcdowell is very good at explaining things and easy to talk to if you have questions. He has powerpoints and doesnt really use the book. You can pass his class if you study off the powerpoints and WHAT HE SAYS IN CLASS. He's the best bio teacher I have had yet.
he's a nice guy, and his powerpoints are good - but his tests are so hard!! he literally puts the hardest, most indepth concepts on the tests, making it hard to get anything higher than a C on the tests (if you're lucky). i got an A in 141, a B in 142, and i'll be extremely lucky to pass this class with a C. i'm praying i won't have to retake this.
I really liked his class, even though I didnt do well Ill be taking him again!
He explains everything in a clear, understandable manner and made the class interesting. Yes he's harder then others but I rather have a hard instructor and actually LEARN the material than an easy one who spoon-feeds the info to students. Exams are based on powerpoints and lecture. Go to class, read, and do the study guides and you'll be fine.
Super great guy but extremly hard on his test. You need to make sure you read and know EVERYTHING in the chapter and on the power points. Take lots of notes in class or you will fail. The study guides are useless. The class average was mid 70`s.If your not already strong in this subject, do not take him.
Powerpoints,Notes,Book, in that order. That's how you pass this class. The reason for the C was I completely blew off lab this quarter. I Averaged 85% on his tests. I was a bit shocked at those who thought his tests were hard. Listen to what he emphasizes during lecture. Print out the power points and take notes. It's that simple. Oh ya, STUDY
im not sure why everyone says his tests are so hard he tells you exactly what to study and if you come to class and pay attention its easy. i got a b in the class i thought he was funny and reasonable. this is not a high school class you come to learn the best way to know what is learned is to test. the point is to learn not to be spoon fed
I had him for both 142 and 143 and got an A in both. He explains everything clearly and if you go to class, you will know what is going to be on the test. People who complained of him being hard were usually ones who wanted an easy A. You have to work for your grade. Use his powerpoints, take notes, pay attention in class, and do his study guides.
i dont look for a easy and i really did study hard for this class but its a very hard class. you need to know everything to get a good grade. i even used his study guide and his power points and still didnt get an A. be prepared to get your butt handed to you if your not 100% commited to this class. Good Luck!
I do NOT like ken he is very hard and does not explain things very well.i will not be taking him for 143!
I like this teacher, took him for 142,143 and thought he explained things well, answered questions, and told you what was on the test. Print out power point, take notes in class and study. It is not an easy class and you DO have to STUDY. You do not have to go to class, but hard to get a good grade if you miss to much.
If you want to succeed, print your powerpoints, take notes, ask questions if you don't understand, and STUDY! He is generally a patient professor, and if he doesn't know the answer to something, he will admit it! I took Mr. McDowell for 142 and 143 and got a B in both. Very good teacher. The course material is challenging, but he does a good job.
i dropped this class in order to keep my gpa up. he is extremely hard to follow and u must go by notes or record lecture in order to keep up.good luck!
This guy is tough. He teaches at a higher level than he should. If you take him make sure you know notes and book forwards, backwards, up, and down. There are some questions on the test that wont be on any material so listen closely or he may not even go over it. He could be a great teacher if he would slow down and teach at an associates level.
Great teach I was't the greatest student
McDowell was the best instructor I have had at Sinclair. Come to class, print his powerpoints and take notes. If you don't do all of the above then expect to fail. If he doesn't talk about it in class, it won't be on the exam. If you do the work he will make every attempt to help you. I took him for 1141 and 1242 got an A in both!
I don't recommend this professor unless you want 2 learn everything on your own. I am a 3.895GPA & this instructor has harmed my grade in A&P. I come 2 learn, not be given bare bones & then told 2 figure it out! I wasn't in this class for an easy grade, however, the professor didn't have to make it harder on students, not to mention doesn't care.
I had McDowell for both lab and lecture. I have to disagree with the person below. I sat with a student who talked the whole way through lab..lets hope its not the same one complaining about how hard the professor is:) Excellent professor, he expects 100% and gives the same in return. I'm taking him again next semester for 1242!
Had to drop! I'm a 3.75 GPA student & was failing! Studied hard & could barely get a 60% on test. His test r confusing & he does not base his questions on his power point notesbook. So the book was useless for his test. Also he will put u to sleep with his monotuned voice when he lectures. Bewarned....
Loved his teaching style. This class does require work. Make flashcards to study his power point slides and you will pass the class. My lowest grade on a lecture exam was a B when I used this method. Great teacher, and he is very serious about what he does. Show up and be ready to work hard and you will do fine.
Dr. McDowell is a great instructor. He does expect you to read the book as well, so just showing up to class is not enough, you have to put forth some effort. I love his teaching style. He is one of the best professors I have had at Sinclair.
Main emphasis is on ppts! Every test question is answered on ppts, so they are the main study source (dont have to read book).Attending lecture is essential to full understanding. Very detailed material, but he goes through it all slowly & clearly. He's respectful, up front with expectations, and a great teacher. Be ready to put in a lot of effort!
Mcdowell was the hardest professor I have ever taken. I went to his office trying to get help and it was useless. His tests are tough and his lectures are hard to comprehend.
Mcdowell was the worst professor I have ever had. I barely passed his class and I am an A/B student. When I went to ask for help on his test he said "I write differently from what I speak". If you are going into NSG do not take him. I am not just saying this he is not a good teacher at all, honestly save your time and money.
No offense to him but it's hard to stay awake! He does give you the tools (ppt) and study guides to help pass, it is up to the student/the effort. In the beginning, I was failing but my last three tests were 2 C and 1 B and ended up passing with a C! Listen in class(if you're awake), follow the ppt to a "T" and even msg class for clarity!
If you want to pass his class, you are going to have to work for it! He is extremely knowledgeable, and goes very in depth. He expects you to not just memorize facts or definitions, but to be able to expand on concepts & to have a deep understanding of them. His tests are HARD! If you want to pass, plan on studying A LOT and never missing class!
Dr. McDowell is a great teacher! I heard lots from other students about him, but I really liked him. His lectures are great, and he does above and beyond the power point to make sure you understand the material. You do have to be there for lecture, and you do need to study for the test.
Be ready to work! Dr. McDowell is great at helping you understand the material, but also expects you to put in the work to do well. Read the book with his power points! He is always willing to talk about the material with you if you don't understand something. Self study is imperative in this class.
This is a tough class no matter who the teacher is. I think McDowell only makes it harder because his test are extremely hard, and the tests make up your entire grade. The class average on his exams were between 50-65% range. He seems to enjoy making his test hard to see how many people can pass them! I personally wouldn't recommend this teacher.
McDowell does make this class easier will his power points and study guides. Memorize the power point slides for every exam.
Worst professor I've had at Sinclair. Re took this class somewhere else and received an "A", but couldn't pass one of McDowells test? He doesn't care if you do not pass, and if you have him for lab then you are pretty much on your own there too. Wouldn't recommend anyone to take him.
McDowell expects a lot out of you. Class isn't mandatory, he does post the power points online, but if you want a good grade, you need to go. His exams are straight off the power points but in more detail. Studying is crucial. I am an honors student but I had to drop it, if that tells you anything. Good luck. Take someone else if you can.
I had him early in the morning and he talks so slow! He is really snarky and overall was kind of a jerk. Doesn't go into detail much about well, anything.
I thought that McDowell was a decent professor overall. He went over everything that was on the exams but you have to pay CLOSE attention. Try not to skip any lectures because it'll definitely affect the next exam you take. Slides are online but not very specific. Gives some extra credit which helps. You really have to try hard.
I will be honest, I was skeptical of Professor McDowell based on the reviews of him. This class is hard no matter who you take, but you have to be able to put effort in and not expect an easy A. I am glad I passed and paid attention to his lectures because you NEED this information when you get to the part 2 of this course 1242, which I am in now.
doesn't explain clearly, study guides are a waste of time, know all the material because you don't know what is going to be on the test he admittedly "writes different than he talks".... he's awful! I wish I would've dropped him when I could've. I failed my first test, did ok on the others. Because I read the book. DONT TAKE HIM, you will regret it
Print out the slides take notes during class organize them after. I got an A and 105 on my last exam. The way he gave me time to learn it instead of memorizing has helped me so much in Patho
He isnt a good teacher at all. He doesnt explain anything at all, and when you really have a question he doesnt care. I recommend you picking geiman as an instructor!
I took him for lab for A&P. If you do not show up to class you will miss a ton of important information. Requires studying to pass. He was precise on what needed to be learned. I would take him again.
I would NEVER take a class with him again. He doesnt teach at all. He will read off of his power points that are impossible to follow. I have him for lab and lecture.
This is a very difficult class material wise. It requires a lot of memorization & studying. Your grade is made up of ONLY tests and attendance is not mandatory, but if you dont go, you probably wont do very well in the class. He has his own slides he teaches from, and I personally only took notes from those. I never used the book.
He is awesome for lab. With A&P1 I never passed a lab exam I passed solely off of lecture point. I am doing great on lab exams taking him. He explains things very clearly. I thoroughly enjoy his labs.
He explains things very well, and makes things easier to understand than other professors. However, if you miss anything and ask him a question he will be mean and refuse to answer most of the time. Hes pretty grumpy.
He goes through the slides and does a lot of extra explaining so make sure you jot down literally everything he says because if you just take notes on the slides you wont do well on the tests. Although the book isn't used in class, it helps when studying.
He goes into too much extra detail none of what is on his powerpoints was on his test. It was harder than it shouldve been i took a different professor and passed the same class he teaches with flying colors. Avoid this professor at all cost register for classes early so you dont get stuck with him.
Good luck if you take Mcdowell. You can tell he know his material, but he does not explain it to where you can understand it. He will answer your questions most of the time but he does get mad. He is a great lab teacher, but not a good lecture teacher. He just rushes through the material. He doesnt care if you pass or fail.
His exams for the lecture were difficult. I studied powerpoints & study guides & a lot of the material I studied were not on the test. He doesn't like when people ask a lot of questions, he was rude with a student who was asking about the study guide. It was hard to learn from him & he doesn't teach so that you can understand the material well.
I HIGHLY recommend reading the book. You will have a better understanding when it comes to the tests. His questions are not as straight forward as other teachers, but 1242 is heavy in concepts.
The powerpoints have lots of blanks and pictures so if you skip you will not pass. He doesn't explain things very well. I suggest reading the book. I couldn't afford it and I am barely passing. The exams are very hard and not straightforward. Study from the study guides not the powerpoint.
Don't recommend to read books coz it's a ton of information but Professor McDowell simplified it in a very organized way. Focus on classes and PPT makes sure truly understand every detail. Best professor so far in Sinclair.
Dr. McDowell is a great professor. I had him for both a&p classes and learned so much. His class was hard but certainly not impossible, and if you apply yourself it will pay off (in better understanding) in so many other classes. You will not pass if you don't read the book, study and come to class; that's how college should be.
Mr. McDowell is one of the best lab professors I have ever had. However, when it comes to lecture, it is painstakingly tiresome. If you take a morning class, you will struggle staying awake. With the actual material you might as well grab the book, study guides and powerpoint slides, and learn all of this by yourself or with peers.
Exams were very difficult. The wording used makes the test 10x harder to understand the questions, causing a lot of confusion on what exactly the question is asking. Does not like to answer questions. I do everything i need to do in order to do well in this class and i still aren't getting good grades due to the exams.
I took this class fall of 2020, which means remote learning due to COVID. The ONLY way to get a good grade in this class is to read the textbook. While it is expensive, you won't pass without it. His lecture powerpoints are vague, which is how it should be. The textbook is your main source of understanding. He's a good professor!
Would not recommend. Had questions and was very slow at responding, and the tests are very difficult. I had done everything for the exams such as notes, powerpoint, the book, and outside tutoring and still got a low grade on all exams.
Extremely hard tests with confusing questions not gone over during lecture or study guides. Did not reply to my emails asking for help.
McDowell is a friendly instructor, but it is difficult to pass his class. The only things contributing to the final grade are exams. If you bomb one or two, don't expect to be able to make up for it. Extra credit opportunities are rare, and the points aren't enough to make a difference.
Do NOT take any class with this professor. The information on his slides is not what is on the test, he is not willing to help those who are struggling, and he doesn't care if you fail. Attending lecture is not helpful and you're better off reading the book. Study guides don't help either.
He is very lecture heavy, hard to stay focused when you stay on one slide for 15+ mins. However, if you can stay focused like that and need to know every small detail he might be great for you. Questions on tests are very very specific and you need to basically memorize every word of the notes to get above a 50% on exams.
