All lecture. Test and papers are hard. 6 books required only use 4 of them. Books are boring lots of reading.
The proffessor is unclear in directions and tells the class expectations about a paper 3 days before it's due. Hard tests. Must know about 200 items and only 6-8 on test. Lots of reading a whole book is due in about a week.
not a big fan of this professor.. He knows his stuff but is not good at teaching it. very hard to stay awake in class.. lotsa reading that seems really pointless cause he just lectures over it in the end. lame..
If you study your lecture notes and don't miss class much, he's really not that hard.
Very unorganized. Harsh grader. Tons of reading and buying books that were not used in the class.

This dude's not cool. Super hard and just plain lame. Word for the wise-go, take good notes and study them to no end. Peace....
Very hard test, harsh grader, pompous teacher, no help
Very difficult class. He knows what he's talking about, but he tests on everything. Very hard to study for.
Boring as hell and the class is pretty hard too.

I don't mind lecture classes, but if you don't like them, don't take his class. The lectures do get a little long. I think this is a lot of work for a 101 class. He can be strict on grading papers. It is possible to pass the tests if you take good notes and cram atleast one or two days before hand.
This calss was so boring and hard that I dropped it halfway through the quarter.

Everyone may think he is bored, but if you come in with a clear mind and notice how excited he is about his teaching you really can get into it. It may be the history major in me, but he really has something to offer. There are few professors on campus who are as excited as he is to be teaching the subject that he is.
Really smart man, just doesnt make life very fun for his students.
TAKE NOTES ALWAYS!
Awesome prof. Doesn't take any crap or excuses which he shouldn't. Makes class entertaining and engaging. NOTES!
He has to be the worst teacher I have ever had. My advise stay away from this guy. He makes you feel really stupid I really didnt like his teaching style.
This is the only teacher I have ever had that I really hope gets fired. He is a bad teacher, does't help you at all and thinks he knows everything. I am very skeptical of his knowledge and think he is a very rude teacher and makes students feel incompetent and stupid. I do not think he should be teaching. Try to avoid taking a class from him!

He is possibly the worst teacher I have ever had. There is no way to study for tests, and he grades hard. Stay out if at all possible. Class is all lecture all day.
very cocky teacher, provides very little help, makes it nearly impossable to study for exams, grades tests and paper extremely tough
By far one of the hardest teachers I've ever had. And most of the blame can be put on his shoulders. His method of teaching is REALLY boring and ineffective. His study guides are enormous and you won't even use half of the stuff listed during the test. A big waste of time.
HIST 101 is harder than it seems, having to cover quite a lot of history very fast. He did this reasonably well and isn't a bad teacher. Just boring as he tells the same jokes all the time. But very easy if you study.

Study sheets for exams helped little, if at all. Exams are rather hard, but typical for a history class. Lectures were hard to follow and Munsell is strict and very unforgiving. I forgot to turn in one paper and he failed me automatically.
Dr. Munsell is hands down one of the best professors I've had here. He is tough, but it's just because he loves what he's teaching you and he's really excited about getting you into the material as well. The reading is absolutely necessary, but the material is awesome! His grading can be harsh, and he has exacting standards, but I learned a ton!!!
Ive had him a few times now. If you are a history major, you will love him. The people that complain are the ones who do not know how to write or take efficient history exams. Historyy courses are a lot of hard work, and so many people underestimate the major! I like his classes, and if you have any interest in history, he is a good guy to take.
Hard teacher tests are ridiculous. Graded my paper quite fairly since the book it was on went right over my head. Unless you are planning on coming to every single class to take 3-4 pages of notes avoid at all costs. That said he does know his stuff quite well.
I really loved this class, personally. Munsell loves what he teaches, and it shows. It was interesting to learn all these neat ideas and such, but be prepared to work. You will NOT slide in this class. I don't think he's unreasonably difficult, but I really enjoy this topic. Be prepared for essay questions and blue books when you do your tests.
I love this class. This not a "slide" class but his teaching is worth working for. I think he is a great teacher and shows that he really loves whats he is doing and knows everything about his subject. If you want to learn something, take his class.
DON'T TAKE ANY OF HIS CLASSES. The worst teacher here. Makes many offensive coments. Doesnt understnad that everyone learns differently. Doesn't understand the usefulness of power point in a class room. Each of his 4 Graded items were worth 25% of your grade. No homework, no quizes, no reviews. Makes it hard to learn anything with only 4 things.
Munsell is God. One of the few out there that is passionate about history and teaching. Take him...especially if you are a history major. All you haters need to shut up, college isn't supposed to be a cake walk and people start crying when they have to take notes and listen.
This professor is Horrible. The way he talks is so annoying because he studders his words half the time. His expectations are extremely high for the tests and the the 5 page paper you have to write. He grades VERY hard on everything. There are 2 tests and a final with no reviews. I would avoid this teacher if at all possible.
Great teacher every class is like story time you just have to do your best to write the story down. Highly note oriented he does not use any kind of teaching aid other than some pretty interesting old school maps. No text book or home work assigns about three easy reading books a quarter and one is usually a really good read.
He thinks he is funny, but he isn't. His lectures are good, but his tests are ridiculous- 200+ terms to learn when he only includes 5 on the test???!?! Plus, he is a super hard grader. I am an A student, and I was given a B+ on one of the exams when I'm positive there wasn't a single thing to fault me on.
Munsell is a hard teacher to take for most but personally I think his classes are worth the hard work, especially for history majors. Exams are pretty hard...there is 3 including final. Be prepared to take a lot of notes, he has lectures everyday, he makes a lot of jokes, which granted most of us don't get lol but really good class overall.
Professor Munsell is a SOB! His lectures are hard to follow especially when he goes off on one of his ADD tangents. One minute he will be talking about the fall of the Roman Empire, but then in MID SENTENCE he starts telling you the plot of STAR WARS!!!! DO NOT TAKE IF YOU LIKE HISTORY AND DONT WANT IT RUINED FOR YOU!!!
Ridiculously tough grader! Beware!
Grading is rough. 5 page essay, midterm, and final are included in this class. There is an excruciating amount of notes. Beware: if you don't do well on the paper or mid term, be prepared for a not so well grade. Remember there are only 3 things graded. But, a very interesting teacher and I love listening to his lectures and tangents.
Complains ALOT. Puts students down and makes them feel stupid for their opinion, and because of this no one raises their hand, and then he gets all mad and says that there cant be a discussion if no one is going to discuss. Well hmmm...wonder why. Needs to simply respect students. Not enough space here to mention all negatives. Avoid at all costs!
He is a very intelligent man and he knows it. While his lectures can be very interesting he goes on tangents that don't help and he gets pissed when students don't show up to class...but he closes the locked door right at the beginning of class. He's arrogent and frequently makes offensive comments without thinking about it.
I've taken 4 or 5 classes from him. He'll grade you based on three things: 5 pages essay, and midterm and final. My advise: take word-to-word notes(paraphrase everything he says) and don't miss a class. This way you won't have to read texts. You will read about 2-3 books for your paper/essay topics; so read them. TALK TO HIM!(path to good grades)
Instructor is teaching a 100 level class and is expecting students to have 400 level class retention with stupidly large amounts of information thrown at you. No textbooks and no powerpoints so you must be in class to even remotely know what he's talking about. He doesn't offer help and he doesn't offer any form of extra credit. Overall, horribad
Smart guy, and a decent teacher. Class is not mandatory, but you should make every class because his tests are based completely off of his lectures. Three tests & one paper. Don't bother asking him for help, he's a prick.
You pretty much have to go to class every day and take 3-4 pages of word-for-word notes if you plan on passing. The amount of material for the 2 midterms and 1 final is ridiculous..have to memorize 200 terms for each test and he will only put 5 on the actual exam.He clearly loves what he teaches but he is disrespectful to students and a tough grader
Very bright, extremely rude. If you need to leave the room use the bathroom, or perhaps blow your nose in the hall to avoid disrupting class he will stop mid sentence just to stares you down as you leave the room and makes it apparent to do the same when returning. It?s really frustrating and distracting in itself.
all you have to do is show up and take notes, study guides look hard but most the terms are related to each other so studying for tests is not hard, as long as you pay attention your fine
He is by far the most difficult prof as far as history goes. I have taken 4 of his classes due to bad schedules. History is my major and this guy almost ruined it for me. If you are taking any 100 level courses avoid him. The amount of work for the level is ridiculous. Show up every day and take word for word notes if you do end up having his class
Simply avoid taking any class from him.
If you can avoid taking a class with him do so! If you get stuck with him it sucks, but is very manageable. Attendance is a must! If you go to class everyday and take notes you will do just fine. There is ALOT of reading so be prepared. Tests are relatively easy, if you study your notes you will do just fine. Again avoid if possible.
This professor is an extremely hard grader and you only get 4 opportunities for grades in the grade book: 2 midterms, a paper, and the final . The class does not make sense and multiple times the professor admits this.... This is a stupid class that I have gained nothing from and have completely wasted my time.
I took him for three classes and he is a good teacher. His class is straightforward and his expectations are clear. He is really smart and he is a good lecturer. I learned a lot in his classes.
His class is basically taking notes everyday, all class. He talks the whole class. His tests are essay questions that consist of 8 terms out of about 300 that you need to learn. He is a strict grader, makes people in his class feel stupid. Basically do not take this course with this teacher!!
This was the hardest 101 class I have ever taken. I didn't expect to have to work this hard. Reading and attendance is a must. Try to avoid this teacher his lectures are boring and he is not a nice person.
I had this professor in the mid '90s. He's smart, but no where near as smart as he thinks he is. He was too busy assuming you were a moron trying to get something over on him to teach, and attempts at learning were seen as suspect and NEVER encouraged or facilitated. My educational goals then, and now, were achieved in SPITE of people like this.
Professor was very knowledgeable of his teachings although his classes were very tedious and boring. Every day he just walked in with a map and talked for the whole 50 minute time slot, no day was different. There were two midterms and a final which weren't so hard, they aren't if you take good notes and study hard. A lot of reading also.
Rude to students, not helpful, no respect, no interactions with students, no computers allowed in class, not helpful with student difficulties, expects too much, too much reading, 3 books read each every day, knows everything and students don't, all in all bad teacher, refuse to take again
Just overall a terrible class, you only have 4 chances to get points 3 test and one essay that you are discourage from doing out of class research on our topic...you will regret taking this class
So boring and so difficult. Worst 100 level class I ever took.
Most difficult 101 class I have ever taken. He is a very strict grader. There is a lot of reading, being a 101 class. There are two midterms, one paper, and one final for a total of 400 points. Really difficult to get a good grade in the class. Can't ask for help because he won't give it to you. AVOID if possible. He is not nice at all.
I really enjoy being in his classes, I've taken him twice. He knows what he's talking about and teaches like he's telling a story
Has not updated his teaching style in 20 years. 3 tests, one paper on a book, all weighted evenly. The book has nothing to do with the time period of study. Prof moves from one country to another without connecting the world as a whoel in WORLD HIST. Assumes students have knowledge of world history. Don't take him if another prof available.
Very rude to students. Class is an absolute nightmare and I am a 3.7GPA student.
Do not take this class with him. He was the BEST lecturer I've ever had..but the worst prof. His tests were so hard because he gave absolutely too much info to retain, there was no textbook to follow along and no powerpoint. If you're not a good note taker do not even attempt. I had a 3.84 GPA in the last quarter of my soph year and got my first F
Munsell's not exactly the most pleasant guy, but his classes are very straightforward. Come to the lectures, use the study guides, read the books, and just put in some effort, and you'll get by. He's been teaching the same five or so classes for decades now, so he's got a set formula. He can be pretty abrasive, tactless, and even unkind sometimes.
He was not a good professor. He stood in front of the classroom and lectured no power points at all, he just talks. All his tests are written in a green book. Tests were very hard and seemed not relevant to his lectures. Barley passed his class because of how terrible of a teacher he was.
TERRIBLE! Boring lectures that give you way too much information compared to the tests which seem like they have nothing to do with the lecture because his study guides are so overwhelming. Hard grader and rude as a person, not easy to even approach to ask for help.
I would only recommend this course for people who LOVE history. He is very knowledgable about what he teaches, and I can appreciate that, but he has a horrible teaching method. All lecture. He got through the entire quarter without knowing any of our names. Three tests and one paper are each 25% of your grade so mess up one and you're screwed.
I would discourage even the most studious history lovers from taking him. The lectures are long and dense, meaning that if you miss a day, you're screwed. Be prepared to buy 3 textbooks. The general textbook did not follow the lectures AT ALL, & wasn't even helpful when I was sick and had to catch up. I love history & school, but I hated this class
He's serious that's for sure. He is pretty old school in his teaching style and his lectures do get a bit boring, but if you hammer down and read the book the exams aren't bad. For the paper he is huge on citing, but you can't take quotes, ect. It has to be how you interpret the material. Boring class, but it is full of some interesting stuff.
Worst teacher I have ever had in my life. He is very rude, neglected to inform me requirements for this class after trips from the hospital and the clinic. He would call me out in front of everyone, and I had to study with him. when I asked questions he would make me feel stupid or just yell at me. I cried after class every day almost.
Professor is rude and makes you feel stupid. Will call you out if he has something to say. His powerpoints are literally essays. I've counted 4,678 UMs & BUTTS. All he does is talk during the class. You get 4 chances to get points. THIS CLASS SUCKS. He gives you 3,000 words and only uses like 10 on an exam. Complete waste of time and it is nonsense
For a teacher who solely utilizes the lecture for his classes, he cannot form a complete and coherent sentence to save his life. Also don't expect any feedback on your assignments, he just marks stuff wrong and gives you no point scale/rubric. You are left completely blind to how you can improve or do better on any assignments. WORST PROF THUS FAR.
Just wow. So lazy that he only gives his students 4 chances for points in the entire course. He's rude, condescending, and clearly just shows up because he has to. He doesn't care about his student's success at all. I got my first C ever in his class and I attribute it only to his terrible teaching methods. Avoid him, just trust me.
He gives out four grades for his entire course: the paper, two tests, and the final. He highly recommends that you do the reading. If you do not do the reading, then you will do very poorly in the class. If you miss class, then your also missing a lot of information. I really enjoyed his class and recommend him, as long as you do the work
He lectures the whole period in a monotone voice and does not use a powerpoint or anything to make his lectures more interesting. He also has a no eating in classroom policy and no cell phone use policy. If you get caught doing any of those prepare to be harshly scolded. He also is a terrible grader and tends to give out low grades. Avoid!
Although he doesn't grade participation or attendance, you basically need to show up 95% of the time or YOU WILL NOT PASS. This course is not writing intensive, it is READING INTENSIVE. What he lectures on, is not what you will read about. AVOID THIS CLASS. I'm a good reader and writer and this class was RIDICULOUS.
Kenneth Munsell is impossible to approach, makes anyone who asks a question look like an ass, and completely halts class and waits if anyone is even a minute late. There are 4 grades available: 2 Midterms, a paper, and the final. While this seems nice, heed our warning! A poor grade on any will devastate your grade!!! DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!!!
His classes are structured as if they are for much larger audiences. It is mainly lecture, which he has delivered about 28712364876 times already, and this is reflected in his monotonous tone. He clearly knows his stuff, but his classes are not for those with short attention spans. Not a bad teacher, just tough to pay attention to.
Munsell expects you to show up to class every day. He goes through a lot of information every day, so if you skip you should ask to borrow notes from a classmate. If you work hard, you will do well. The tests are really easy if you study your notes.
Contradicting and confusing
He knows his stuff but he's terrible at teaching. He talks from start to finish in a monotone voice, has no visuals, and gets angry when you ask questions. Spends time on the subjects he's interested in and crams ones he's not into one or two days. Not approachable and tests are on tiny details. Don't skip. At all. Prepare for pages of notes a day.
Thought I'd hate this class cuz his low score here but his lectures ended up being great. He speaks clearly & repeats information in a way that makes it stick. He did go into depth on China & some ppl complained but after so many classes that totally ignore Asia it was awesome. His study guides are awful though making studying for the test hard.
Awful class to go to. Everyday will be a struggle to stay awake. If you are not truly into history and are only taking his class as a general education requirement then you are in for a long quarter. Makes you feel stupid for asking questions and you are not allowed to check your phone or leave the class under any circumstances.
He is without a doubt the worst professor I have ever had. His lectures consist of talking in circles for 50 minutes. Don't bother asking questions or for help because he is rude and will likely humiliate you in front of the class. The study guides take at least 3 to 4 hours to complete and over half of the material isn't on the test.
He is very knowledgeable, but I can see why some would hate his classes. There are 4 things that you're graded on: 3 tests and a 5 page paper. There's no homework, but if you screw up one of these, your grade will suck.
Attendance isn't mandatory but you take pages of notes a day. If you don't come to class it is difficult to pass. Can be very difficult to work with, I emailed him twice during the quarter never got a response. Did not give me notes for the lectures even after I informed him I had a friend pass away. If you can take someone else do!
struggles to assist you outside of class time. prepare for lecture since he admits he doesn't know how to use PowerPoint properly. has moments of anger such as me not talking after disabilities sent him a note of my disability and for using pencil on test when never clarified what he wanted. alright professor but very old school so be prepared.
Worse teacher ever. Has no respect for students, very monotone, and doesn't care if we learn. He goes off on tangents in his lectures, lectures THE ENTIRE TIME EVERY DAY, and hates you if you take notes on a laptop. Snaps at students a lot, and only has four assignments. He doesn't teach you anything, but if you don't go you'll STILL fail.
Class is lecture only, no powerpoints, no worksheets, nothing, only his voice. Attendance isn't mandatory but good luck passing the test if you missed more than a day or two. We only had 4 grades total, an essay and 3 tests all 100 points each. Only good thing is he gives out a study guide every Friday, but they're massive sheets.
Tests are nothing like the study guides. If you can avoid him, do it.
Had an 86% going into the term paper and ended with a 78%. Your grade hinges on 2 tests and a paper. Does not believe in PowerPoint or study guides. Stands in front of the class and talks in a monotone all period. Extremely harsh grader and makes you feel stupid for asking questions or clarification on anything. All in all worst professor I've had.
Pros: Extremely knowledgeable, Well structured and easy to follow class/grading criteria (1 Term Paper, 3 or 4 Essays based upon the books read, and final), and good grading feedback. Cons: Monotone Lectures, and difficult. Being a junior, I benefitted enormously. Take this class if you are confident in your writing skills or have to, due to major
Worst professor I have ever had. He lectures the entire time, doesn't use powerpoint or canvas. He is very rude and will make you feel dumb in front of the class. If you walk in 30 seconds late, he will stop talking and stare at you until you take your seat. Not approachable, and his 4 assignments for the class are hardly associated with lectures.
Prof. Munsell is... I dont think there are enough words to convey how horrible of an experience this class was. Lecture heavy, no visual aids, no accessible outside of class help, three textbooks, and 1 essay and three tests. He doesnt grade attendance but gets angry with you if you miss even one day.
This is the absolute worst professor I've ever had. He only has four tests, doesn't offer any extra credit, if you ask a question or answer a question wrong, he humiliates you in front of the class. If you ask for the smallest bit of help, he thinks its inappropriate to do so... Avoid taking this professor! it'll save you GPA.
Paper has nothing to do with what he lectures about in class, unclear directions for the one essay you have to write for class, unable to ask for help without him laughing at your ideas or making you look stupid
AVOID! I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH! Do you not take him!!! You will regret it! He is INCREDIBLY rude, makes you feel so stupid, yells at you for no reason, and doesn't allow laptops for notes, or eating in class. How old are we? 12?? If you even walk in one minute late he stares you down. Don't even dare raise your hand, you'll feel dumb. DONT TAKE
There were 4 things in the gradebook- a 5 page paper, two midterms, and the final...
He gives extremely difficult tests and will put you asleep in class. I saw these reviews and I thought I would be different than other students and could do in his class. Boy was I wrong! Avoid his class! If you are in his class, use CrashCourse and read the book! Study hard!!
NEVER TAKE HIS CLASS!! The only information he gives us is through his lectures- No PowerPoint slides, no textbook, no canvas. Its so hard to take notes for review. He doesnt give us any type of review for exams either.
Prof Munsell was quite frankly the worst teacher I have ever experienced. He is extremely rude and clearly could not care less about the students. Extremely unapproachable and hard to talk to. Never dare ask for extra help because he WILL make you look and feel stupid. Doesn't believe in the internet. Do not take this professor for your own good.
History department dude, very talkative during lectures and most of what he says isnt on the test. Not willing to help students in any way (even if theirs a death in the fam, told me to just drop out) If you miss the class, you miss the notes, he does EVERYTHING PEN AND PAPER. Many advisers advise to only take his class at gun point.
Loved his class and wish I could have taken more of them. Read some of his reviews and it seems that many folks expect power points and coddling and asking how your live is. This is not Mr. Munsel. He's old school and he expects students to act like adults. Show up on time, do the reading/homework, and study for tests. What concepts...
Professor Munsell is extremely demeaning and disrespectful towards his students. I understand a no phone policy but when he calls someone out for just glancing at a phone was more distracting than anything else. The professor always seemed to have a loss in train of thought as when he spoke, the words "um" or "uh" and long pauses were present after
If you choose an interesting paper topic and pay attention to lectures, this class is an easy A. If you need to be coddled with powerpoints, stay away from this class. If you can't put your cellphone down for an hour, don't take this class.
Attendance is not required but if you skip, since the class is almost entirely lectures, you will fail if you skip often. Just follow the syllabus, and always attend the study sessions. He can be sort of rude but not nearly as bad some people will say. Its a pretty straightforward class, as long as you follow his grading rubric you should be fine.
Do not take this class, avoid him if possible.
Ken does not use Canvas, so that's a little frustrating. He never cancels class and the few assignments you have are heavily weighted. He will make you write a 5 page paper in the first 2 months on one of the like 4 books he has you purchase, but your thesis must be approved. Expect essay tests, bad jokes, and hard grading. Would not recommend.
Thinks he funny, do not believe him. Read your books, all of them, and you should be okay. If you love history, class is optional.
Loved his class, if youre there for the history and knowledge then you will like it. A general rule of thumb for all classes is dont sit in the back, if you do he will pick on you. fair person, yet very political. Trashing the potus at any point possible, which has its ups and downs. Make what you want out of this class. if its good, good. Bad, bad
There were no PowerPoints in this class, just verbal lecture with maps for reference. I took about 135 pages of notes in the quarter, so be prepared to do a lot of writing. Professor Munsell was really helpful with my thesis for the 5 page paper due in his class, he seems like he actually wants everyone to get a good grade.
A difficult professor, but if you complete the work given, you will learn something. I use his study guides as template and refer to it even within my final quarters.
WORST professor ever! I honestly do not know how he is qualified to be a teacher. Honestly i came on this page to see reviews, i decided to ignore them and took his class anyway I REGRET IT He has no canvas, and he does NOT care if you turn in assignment or not, he fill fail you! class worth 400 pt need 300 in order to pass and no extra or make ups
I forgot the blue book for the test. I tried to turn it in on college ruled paper and he began to humiliate me in front of the class. Two weeks later a student told me that during a conversation with the professor, the professor brought up how "ridiculous" it was that I forgot my blue book. How is he still mad about it 2 weeks later?
This was the worst professor I have ever had. There is not a high enough character count for me to show how abysmal this professor was. He was demeaning to students (myself more than one occasion), gave zero feedback, doesn't give study guides for tests, doesn't care about teaching, and hardly even focused on course material in class.
He is an awful prof. He really could care less about his students and their education because all of his lectures are voice only. The addition of a powerpoint and access to it online would make his class so much easier to understand. If you aren't already a little familiar with the subject dont take the class or you won't understand.
I should be relaxed for teachers moving online for COVID-19 but wow, this is awful. How does a professor who only teaches by lecture in-person teach online? Simple! He doesn't! I keep getting bad grades for papers on subject material I am given a bare minimum in. This is my last term before I get my degree and I may have to stay for summer now.
worst class i have ever taken. The man is not a nice person, stay away
Prof Munsell seemed like a solid gem at first. Unfortunately he does not give any feedback unless "?" Is feedback to you. He asks vague questions for his papers and will mark you down for not reading his mind for what he wanted. Very unprofessional prof, grades down for grammar but has grammar issues in his own emails. Loved the class, not the prof
I gave Ken Munsell the benefit of the doubt and enrolled in his online class. Now, let me say that he is the most abysmal instructor in the history department. The class was online. He never hosted a zoom meeting, nor did he ever record a lecture. He only has a masters but wants to you to email you "formally."
Grades hard on exams, but doesn't seem to have any good reason for it. Canvas shows the class average for a 100pt exam to be 64pts, should reflect on the prof more than the student. Feedback given didn't match paper submitted, and it is frustrating working with an obviously outdated and incoherent member of staff. Good riddance, steer clear.
Prof Munsell is easily one of the hardest professors I've ever had, while also being one of, if not my favorite. He's a professor that has a understanding of history unlike anyone I've ever seen, and does his best to get as much of it into you as possible. As a result the class is certainly difficult, but it's an amazing learning experience.
Extremely vague prompts for essays, which are the only actual assignments besides midterms. Will mark you down for unclear reasons, no rubrics made available. Comments left on essay almost seem passive-aggressive. No recorded lectures for online class, just very wordy powerpoints and third-party youtube videos
Avoid this class if you want a history class. His grading methods are questionable at best. He is the type of Prof. that wont let anyone get an "A" on a paper. more of an English class rather than a history course. Avoid this Prof. if possible
This is by far the best Teacher I have had in many years. This however does come at the cost that he is a very harsh grader and expects a lot from his students. You need to go into class focused and ready to learn. however if you do that you will be getting some of the best information and useful knowledge this school can provide
There is only 4 times you do graded work in this class; an essay, midterm, a SECOND midterm & the final. He gave a study guide for the final that set everyone up to fail. It was about Europe in the 1600s. Only 2 of the questions had to do with that & half of the questions had to do with China?! Very hard to pass when you only have big assignments.
There were only 4 assignments for this whole class, 1 paper and 3 tests. So basically you had to pass all of them in order to get a decent grade in the class. Professor Munsell was not very helpful, he just lectured and expected you read the several textbooks assigned. He did not answer questions clearly and overall just wasn't my favorite.
I read these reviews before taking his class & was fully expecting to hate it. I was surprised to find out that I actually loved his class, & passed with an A. As long as you show up to class, take good notes every day, and study before every test, you should be able to do well in this class. I liked not having busy work & learned so much from him
He was super hard on you it was basically a class of you didn’t show up you automatically failed, all of his assignments are huge ones and are set for you to fail no matter how hard you try, I hated taking this class.
I cannot lie, professor Munsell is very unapproachable and very very strict, he will call you out for being late, however I personally really enjoyed his lectures and I showed up to each and every one, this class is a bit difficult for a gen ed, if you plan on skipping class, I would not recommend his class. But if you want to learn, he is your guy
Your grade in this class is very volatile. Your grade is 75% tests and 25% essay. His grading on the paper was more that of an English teacher than a history professor. The only feedback I received on tests were "?" and "explain". He's more history guru than professor, so you CAN learn a lot, even though your grade may not reflect that.
A lot of people don't like the guy because he's kind of old fashioned. I wasn't a fan when I took his hist 143 class but during hist 301 he seems to really care about the subject and his long old fashioned lectures become enjoyable!
DO NOT TAKE ANY OF HIS CLASSES. If you miss one class, you're gonna be behind. He believes in using an old teaching style that doesn't work and what he requires you to read teaches you nothing
If you're planning on taking HIST 143 for Gen Ed, or even for your major, I suggest to not take this class. I took this class during my first quarter at CWU and my goodness was it stressful. The books had nothing to do with the class, the lectures were incredibly wordy, and you couldn't even use notes on the tests. Really? Steer clear. Please.
He wasn't a really great professor, he wouldn't give people the extension on an essay because "they made that choice". Please try to avoid his class if you can but if you need the credit it's gonna be a bit of a quarter.
I disregarded the warnings on this website not to take him, but I should have listened. He is an awful and rude teacher. He is unapproachable and will humiliate students in front of the class. He graded as if he wanted all his students to fail and his feedback was vague and not helpful. He lectures the ENTIRE class period is overall a bad teacher.
Mr. Munsell is a hard grader, but he does teach relatively hard classes. The big thing I'd fault is the lack of 'intermittent' grades, homework, and other smaller tests. However if you want to learn a lot about a certain subject- be it early American history, the Pacific Northwest, etc. . . he is a go-to/must-have.
Not helpful at all
He is not a good teacher, he will not take into account anything you care about. He is a single-minded man and does not care about your feelings or your well-being as a student. If you have this teacher I would recommend dropping out, he is possibly the worst teacher that CWU has to offer. If you get stuck with him I apologize. He should be fired.
He will chuckle at students for asking a question and then answer it still laughing to make the question appear stupid. He has four things that are graded and while attendance isn't required if you miss a couple days you will have trouble.
The single worst professor I have ever had. First day he got pissy at me for having my laptop out to take notes saying I should be taking notes on paper. He knocked my paper grade down 20% because I turned in the paper copy of the paper 1 day late because I was violently ill, though I submitted the paper ONLINE AND ON TIME.
This professor puts little effort into making anybody enjoy about his course. He's very backhanded with every response I have ever heard him give by either laughing at the question or redirecting you entirely. My first impression on day 1 of class, instead of introducing himself to the class he makes a remark about how funny we look on our phones.
