He is tough, but you learn a lot!!!
He is great fun. One of the best teachers I have ever had. He is so interested in what he is teaching that he gets you into it too.
I have yet to have a teacher as tough as Ken. It took me six hours to study for his weekly quiz. His class definitely prepared me for future biology classes.
He is a pretty cool teacher. very nice and explains topics well. he kind of gives a lot of work. has weekly quizes that require studying and his tests are pretty tough.
ken gets really excited about what he's teaching. makes you excited about biology too. i think he can lecture 2 hrs straight w/out taking a sip of water. i had a lot of fun in his class. he's a good guy. it was tough, but i'd do it again.
Ken is a very good teacher. explains things very well. tests are not too hard, but you must read the text. very well educated and knows a lot! also, very helpful.
He's really hard, yet he explains everything so well!!!!!!!
ken is a tough teacher but his lectures are very thorough. Although intimidating at first, he loves teaching and spending time with students. He has a tough love mentality and if you do not study or spend the expected hours with his class, I can guarantee it will show through your grade.
You need to read the textbook at leat twice to get a B with this class. If you hate reading, an B is impossible. However, you will learn much about biolgy from this class.
He is just as difficult as other studejnts say he is, but he is also just plain mean.
The best teacher i ever had. He could be mean sometime if you don't follow his rules, other than that he's pretty straight forward. He's also very helpful outside of class. Don't be afraid to approach him. He's so smart and know so much about everything. His life story is also pretty interesting
Really hard, excessively so and has no interest in making sure you get an earned grade will simply fail you regardless for your best efforts and knowledge of the subject. I saw 4 4.0 students recieve a B and 3 4.0 students recieve a C in this class.
By far my favorite and hardest professor yet.Heavy workload, lots of quizzes and tests, requires alot of reading, but totally passible with an A if your really put in the effort.Lectures are enthusiastic and fun. Will definitely be taking his other Bio classes.Great teacher!
Really tough professor, but fair and does everything he can to help a student out. Clearly shows a passion for teaching this class. You need to put in time for this class, or you're just tricking yourself! The work is hard, but you come out with a LOT. And his sense of humor is appreciated too.
Excellent teacher. He is very generous with grades even though he doesn't need to be because he teaches all material in a very clear matter. This class is apparently easier than his other clases, but he is surely great at teaching anything.
Wow, this class was totally worthwhile if Ken is teaching it. I learned so much and he's by far the best professor I've ever encountered. Very tough, but with lots of effort, you'll manage to get the grade that you deserve. He's very approachable and wants to help out the students and also very into what he teaches!!
Ken's lectures were fast pased, organized, clear, with some fun info in there too. The man is brilliant. He can talk about one thing and write another on the board at the same time. It's amazing. He would also come out the morning before a test and answer people's questions for over a half hour. Don't miss a chance to take a class from him.
Ken is a great teacher, and his class is easy if you remember one thing, TAKE GOOD NOTES!!! I never used the book, just re-wrote and studied his lecture notes, and you must know how to write well for the tests. I got A's in both classes. His grading scale is extremely forgiving, where you might get a B or C in another class, you get an A in his
THe best professor Ive ever had. His lectures are clear+ organized. super knowledgable in his field and more. he goes out of his way to answer qustions and help you when you need it. there are a lot of quizzes in lab but hey come in handy as review for the final and his tests are essay format but he prepares you very well. I highly recommend him.
This was a hella hard class. I am not a great student and taking this class really made me evaluate myself as a student. He is hard, thorough and a excellent teacher. You will leave his class understanding what it takes to be a bio major. I got a c in his class but it taught me to be a better student...He always wants to help the student succeed
This was a very hard class but if you follow his note and read you will pass. You have to study though. HIs lectures notes are so well organized but you have to put in the effort outside of class. It is a tough class but he is very helpful. Lab quizzes can help your grade out so study for the quizzes. This is one of the best teachers ive seen.
Excellent professor. Highly recommended. Genteel and thoughtful teaching style though beware-his quizes & tests are hard to do well on even when you study your bottom off. His lectures hold one's interest and are informative.
good teacher, great actually, hes enthusiastic. but i kept falling asleep. the dino class just wasnt interesting to me, although he did dish out a lot of info.
Naganuma is such a through lecturer, and I had him for lab! He is really helpful, and always has a great attitude. One downside, however, is he can go on talking forever, so you never get out early. Nevertheless, he's a really nice guy, and a great teacher. Kind of a slow grader, though.
Don't be scared of what you've heard about Naganuma. Yes, he is demanding and he is pushing you hardly, but he is also an excellent teacher. Take advantage of his office hours and clear all of your problems with him. On the other hand, do get prepared for this class. It was like a war for me.
Had him for Bio 464 lec & lab.The man is brilliant. Not for the lazy, you have lots of tests and quizzes, and you have to study your butt off,but I learned more from one semester with him than numerous other classes combined. He's a great lecturer, and loves to answer questions. He always gives out study guides,& the tests come right from them.
Professor Naganuma was one of the hardest professors BUT by far the BEST teacher ive EVER had. His lectures are great. (He has very neat handwriting) His exams are mostly essay but he prepares you so well for them, that as long as you do your part and study you should be fine. Wonderful instructor in the lab. Hes a really smart guy and very helpf
Makes the subject to hard! I took the class over again, so much easier it was a joke.
This man is 1of the most amazing people u'll ever meet! Super knowledgeble, funny, very caring, very clear & a GREAT teacher!he knows what he's talking about and is a fair grader ifu like Bio u'll love it& if u love it u'll go crazy like me!I love him, i love his class & if i could i'd take him4 all my classes!he even made Statistics fun!TAKE HIM!!
Stop!!! Turn around and start running (tell your friends to do the same). I understand that he has Ph.D. but he expects way tooooooo much from his students. His grading sucks, basically he wants u to think and write same as he does. (which is stupid) Took this class and had 5 students retaking class w/ him for the second time, NONE OF THEM GOT A's.
According to many SCC students this "professor" SUCKS, trust me I went trough his class and it's true. He is smart, but his lectures doesn't make sense, because its hard to understand what he is talking about. He is the only teacher that DOES NOT replace Final w/ any lowest exams. Work your way around his class, b/c no one gets good grades...
Definitely one of the most demanding profs, but if you're serious about your education in science and want to be well prepped & successful, this is it. I had to work my butt off for my A, but I really LEARNED the material. LOVE his lectures! Easy to talk to. *hint* anything "interesting" to him = essay question; know it like the back ofyour hand.
Essay answers need to be exact. Hope you get the easy points from multiple choice. Studying is mandatory if you want to pass this class.
Great professor, wonderful and informative lectures, very knowledgeable on the subject, but the exams are a PAIN! About a handful or more of essay questions on each exam that needs to be on the money for full credit, which his hard because he has REALLY high expectations for answers. Lab exams aren't as difficult, but the lab reports are a KILLER!
Prof. Naganuma is one of the best teachers I've had, and one of the most demanding. He will make even A students re-evaluate their study habits! He's completely approachable so take advantage of his office hours. If you want a challenge and would like to actually learn something rather than memorize and forget, take him. Be prepared!
This guy is so hard its not even funny. I am barely pulling a B- and working my tail off everyday. Taking notes is tough becasue he writes a ton but I have learned more in this class than any other in my entire school career. Take this guy and you will too but you will need at least 3 hours a night of study time guarenteed! Enjoy!
Naganuma is tough but very knowledgeable. Hes probably one of the greatest professors Ive taken thus far. But I really had to work hard. When he says to start a project early he really means it. Youll find hes inspiring. He doesnt put up with BS and knows his stuff very well. Take his class if you care about the materials. It'll better prepare you.
OMG! he is not hard at all. he is the easiest teacher that i have had out of the whole biology department. i would recommend taking him. he is very fun and interesting. you will not regret taking his class. :)
great teacher, his lecture is really clear and reading book is required to achieve high grades.
Brilliant man, never a question he couldn't answer. He doesn't put up with immaturity, which made me respect him even more. I have never learned more from anyone. I loved his class, he made everything interesting!
a good teacher. quiz & exam are multiple choice. he do give out 1 extra credit assignment.
Naganuma is NOT easy, but he is one of the CLEAREST lecturers I've had. He's a *very* hard grader, but uses a very gentle curve. Prepare for the class, outline, and STUDY and you'll learn a helluva lot. If you slack, you'll drop the class. The class is hard and he is rigorous, but that's what college is for. A great prep for transfer students!
he is a great teacher. you have to be on your toes, but to be a bio student that is mandatory. when you graduate his class, you are representing him. and he is not just gonna have some dumb ass be one of his students. prove yourself and youll never regret it trust me.
The Hardest class I'v ever taken. Lectures and labs are great, but the exams are KILLER!! By far the hardest grader I have come across. Take this class if you are transfering to graduate school, but DO NOT take this class if you are only filling a graduation requirement. GREAT teacher, but he can be tricky and expects a lot out of his students!
Wonderful Professor, but a lot of material to memorize. Study often and you'll do fine. Professors don't get sexier than Kenneth Naganuma!
Really hard class!! if you study hard you can get an A. great lecturer. take good notes and pay attention and you'll be fine
Take this teacher if biology is your life and there is nothing else in the world that interests you. Hardest class ever. Extremely strict grader.
He expects every student to write the same does. Just memorize everything exactly the way it is written, otherwise you'll get it wrong. Exams questions are worded weirdly. Even fluent speakers will be confused. He doesn't tell you what he wants for the answer. Expectations are not clear at all. People hate being in his class.
Great, interesting lectures. Incredibly hard exams: full of short answers and have to contain every little detail. If you are used to multiple choice exams, then this will be extremely difficult.
Naganuma is a very nice and friendly prof. Although I drop out of his class, I learned a lot of stuffs from him. I understand the subject very well now, and I believe that I will do good if i take this class again. His exam his hard for me because English is my 2nd language; I cant express my ideas on the short essay questions on the exams.Take him
One of the BEST biology prof I have ever had. He is very intelligent, gives clear and concise lectures. You will learn a lot if you take this class with him. Even if I didn't get the grade I wanted, at least I learn a lot and this will certainly prepare me for upper division biology courses. Definitely take him again for other classes.
Dr. Ken knows his stuff! He's one of the best teachers-- yes, he is really hard, all his test have long essay questions, he grades hard but he has a curve! I personally loved this teacher and I only got a B. Talk to him out of class and you'll see he's a sweatheart!
Do not take this teacher if you want a good grade. Test is essay questions. He wants you to know the material as if biology is your life, as if you are going to major in biology. You have to know the material word by word from book and write it on the exam. Nothing you'll do will be good enough to even get near to a perfect score. Worst class ever
If you don't want to ruin your GPA, don't take him!!!! He is helpful, but he is an extremely hard grader.
Wow... This was the most disappointing class ever. Prior to his class biology had always fascinated me. However, this professor managed to make me fear it. He is an extremely hard grader, and uses the excuse that all he does is for your greater good later on. Don't take him if you do not want to ruin your GPA.I don't recommend this professor at all
Boring class. Make the class so serious. No fun at all. Don't take him if you need a good grade.
The material is interesting, but the way he teach is not interesting. He expected very high. Don't take him!!!!
Ken runs a vigorous course; we started the term with lines of folks out the door trying to add, and ended it with just 15 or so survivors. That said, his lectures are engaging, organized, and concise (if you come prepared). Expectations are high, but clear and achievable if you put in the work. Also, pay attention to his hints about essay topics.
Ken is the best because he pushes you to dig deep. Although it was the most challenging bio course I have ever taken it was by far the most rewarding! Expect to study 25-35 hours a week for this class if you want to pass. Read ahead, rewrite your notes, record the lectures, and visit him in his office hours! This class makes or breaks biologists!
Told students in the beginning of the class that a student with a MASTER'S DEGREE IN SCIENCE took his course and didn't get an A. Lectures are actually interesting, but, as someone who graduated from a top university, his grading is hard. Also, tests are essay based, and he basically wants you to memorize the notes for full credit.
Before this class I was not interested in biology, however This class interested me because ken is so good. He is hard but prepares you for anything you will encounter. Take this if you want to be prepared for rigorous UC courses.
I really miss Ken's class because it by the best biology class I have ever taken. The class is meant to be difficult, but Ken will provide you with the means to succeed. Above most teachers, Ken is really organized and he really cares about the future success of biology students. Highly recommended for serious biology students, only.
Professor Naganuma is a serious teacher, but he really is the best. Cares greatly about preparing students for future success and is very helpful in guiding through the class and his expectations. Expect that this class will require A LOT of work, but it is a phenomenal biology experience when taken from Naganuma.
This is the best class I have taken this year! It is a very hard class but I learned so much! If you really want to do good in this class you should come every single day because it is very easy to miss a lot of important information if you don't show up. He is passionate about the subject and very knowledgable. I highly recommend this class!!!
Definitely recommend him! I miss Dr. Naganuma's class so much. English is my second language and I can still pass with an A. Your hard work will pay off in the end and you will find yourself well-prepared for your future study. He gave his students not only knowledge about biology but also experience and enthusiasm.
OMG, this teacher is awesome. He will try to scare-off students in the first 2wks, but stick with it. He is very clear and concise in lecture; pay attention to what topics he emphasizes - he will let you know what the big essay-topic will be. Study guides are very helpful. Avoid being absent - you will miss a lot of information.
Ken is an Amazing teacher! The subject material can be difficult but he keeps his lectures interesting by adding current and relevant information. He is a very tough grader and expects a lot from his students but clearly says what's expected on lengthy study guide. READ THE BOOK AND KNOW ENTIRE STUDY GUIDE! Go to office hours. Best Teacher!
Great class for students in school for an education! Be warned though this class takes a lot more time than any other I've had. The good news is if you do well, you'll be ready for the next level.
Very clear, very passionate. One of the few professors who knows his subject. You will learn a lot and it will prepare you for future classes. Nevertheless, this is a hard class, ask anyone. Prereq is chem 305 or 400, but those will barely help you. This class is a wake-up call to those who think they are smarter than they actually are.
Hmm...Smart prof., wants students to succeed, but suspect some enthusiastic ratings he (& other profs.) got were prob. done by selves. Egos important to them--if you haven't noticed. Anyway, taking study advice: do all reading, rewriting notes, etc. is GREAT--but unrealistic time luxury for most not as privileged. Too bad SCC monopolizes BIO402.
Naganuma is a great teacher, but also a harsh grader(though he does curve). Book is helpful & used but probably not direly needed. The class itself is pretty basic, but it becomes difficult when his exams are essays based on multiple topics and he expects you write down every single and minute detail. You will also need a solid background of chem.
A great professor who teaches really nice but his exams are really hard and you will need to spend as much time as possible for this class. But he is definitely a great professor
This is a hard class, you have to be on top of your game from day 1. He is very passionate about hat he teaches, he knows his stuff. He is eager to help when you need help, very funny, he wants you to think he is tough, but he is a kind and gentle soul. I might not have an A in this class, but I learned a lot.
Its my second time taking it with this professor. The first time was a complete eye opener. He made me realize that I need to step my game up to do well, not just in this class, but in all classes and gave us his methods to study. Come prepared for class, learn the vocabulary, make flash cards, and go to his office hours. Best teacher ever.
Professor is a nice person but is a very hard professor, he expects a lot from his students, more than is possible on exams there isn't enough time for everything on tests. His lectures are very long often going into lab time and tend to be dry. He would be a good upper division professor. Very harsh grading as well
Gives super-clear directions. First exam was split into two shorter tests for "practice" with his essay-style, in-depth questions. Lots of context: current research, new technology, and research methods that yielded important discoveries. Made me feel both the emotional intrigue and the intellectual rigor of science, and challenged my abilities.
There is no doubt in my mind that he is writing his own reviews on here. I'm getting an A in his class but I hate every second of being in his presence. He's overindulgent with his arrogance. There is no POSSIBLE way the average grade on here is an A. He enjoys watching his students struggle to keep from drowning in his material. Take Bio402 at ARC
If he stopped writing his own reviews he'd be able to figure out how to be a better teacher to his students.
I took Dr. Naganuma's cell and molecular bio course in 2007, and then decided to take his zoology class as well because he was an instructor that sincerely cared about my education. He changed my outlook on life and inspired me to become a leader. I was a high school dropout, and now am I graduate student at UCSB thanks to Kenneth.
Don t take class with him, he just make u hate Bio, to much studing but never get good grades....
harsh grader, lots of hard exams
Prof. Naganuma is a very, very harsh grader & has high expectations for his students. Long exams, not enough time. He curves to match his grading though & I found that my studying habits have improved. That being said, I've probably put more effort & time into this class than I have in any other class & still ended up with B-... Don't take him
Pros: Nice person Very informative Loves his field Cons: Lecturing is long and filled with details that can be overwhelming and unnecessary Doesn't give enough time on tests that consist of 3-8 short essay questions Very harsh grader Doesn't use handouts Doesn't give out extra credit I wouldn't recommend taking this professor
Don't enroll if you're used to skating through courses. This is the hardest class you will ever take. The work that you put into the class directly reflects onto your grade. He is tough, but he's an awesome professor; he will open your mind... just be prepared to open your book and put in the effort. Office hours are especially helpful.
Prof Naganuma is a tough grader Expects very detailed answers on exams but hardly gives you enough time Even though his lectures are long, they're helpful since he is so passionate about Biology. Do the study guides and write very detailed answers on your tests! I did all the guides and they helped me learn and pass the class
Prof is unnecessarily harsh on grading, and he requires more than is possible on exams for a decent grade, within the time given. Make sure to thoroughly do study guide questions and take good notes. I think his ego/arrogance is cause for pain for many students but if you need the credit, class is doable. Just gotta work hard and study a LOT.
This was hands down one of the hardest classes I've taken at SCC. The reason being that he wants very specific answers on his tests and that means you have to know the material very well. if you are a pre-med, this class will prepare you well for the mcats. This class will test your will to succeed. The one bad thing is that he lectures too much.
Best Professor I ever had. He expects a lot from you but only for your own good and with good intentions. This class will test your critical thinking and your limits as a student. I didnt earn a passing grade but truly a spectacular professor. TAKE DETAILED NOTES. He will not write everything on the board or powerpoint. LISTEN WELL. RECORD LECTURES
Take this class if: 1) you can do better in college but haven't had the reason to REALLY try. 2) You want to confirm your passion for bio. 3) You want a professor who loves teaching, is organized, and clear about his expectations. I can't say enough about Dr. N. I was scared to take this class, but this prof changed my entire college trajectory.
This was one of the hardest classes I have ever taken but I loved every second of it. He is the hardest 402 prof, but worth it. You have to really know the material, study twice as hard as any other class, but somehow he makes you want to. He's just great, best professor I've ever had. If you can take him, do it.
Prof. N makes his expectations crystal clear on day 1: KNOW the material that he presents. All exams are essay based and answers need to be extremely thorough to warrant full credit. Any wrong answers on exams have helpful comments made so you can know where you went wrong. I never had to guess about what I was expected to know. Try hard and pass.
Great prof, but very hard. Your grade comes from 4 exams, 1 final, 3 lab reports and 2 lab exams.
The class is totally a lot of work, but you do learn a lot.
Lectures are long and boring, grades strictly; hence why more than 70% already dropped the class.
Great prof BUT the hardest I've ever had. I passed but this was after spending over 30 hrs weekly studying & going to office hours. He is hard to keep up & specific in what he wants. Most of the time he is cramming materials before exams. His directions are vague especially when it comes to lab reports. Record lectures if you do take this class.
Naganuma is a tough grader; he definitely knows the material he teaches and expects you to, as well. I considered dropping his class at the beginning of the semester but I am extremely glad I didn't. The A I received (on a v e r y generous curve) was the most satisfying thing I've ever experienced in my entire life. Wish I could take him again.
A LOT is covered in one lecture. Tests are TERRIFYING because you have to be VERY detailed. MANY HOURS of studying required. If you dont have a good study method, you need to develop one fast or youll end up dropping (like 80% of the class). Passing was my biggest achievement and very rewarding. You learn a lot about bio and yourself as a student
Prof Naganuma is very passionate about what he teaches. He is a great professor and always available to help if you reach out to him. Do not be discouraged if you don't do very well on his exams because he curves them heavily. As long as you're scoring within the class average you'll probably end up with an A or a B depending on how well you study
I took Bio 402 with Dr Naganuma twice (after dropping the first go) and I'm glad I got him the second time around. Naganuma holds a title amongst professionals as a "serious scientist" and he definitely pushes his students to rise to the occasion. That said, he is very warm-hearted and EXTREMELY hilarious at times. Subtle humor. Legendary. Take him
If youre considering Naganuma, and youre a serious biology student, you should make an effort to be in this class. Naganuma is a top class educator. Better than youll expect to find at any community college. His students, former and current, are privileged. 10/10 knowledge and charisma. Pushes you to Lear for your own sake. Thank you
Ken's a "old school" science prof. who teaches at a very high level so this class isn't for the faint of heart. As a person, he's cool, low-key funny, can be helpful but as a prof. he's a beast! Long lectures, hard essay exams, knit picky grader. The grades r curved (pro) but b prepared to study 25 hrs a week or more.
Prof. Ken is a great guy and has interesting stories to tell. But this course is not for the faint of heart. Gather every once of confidence you have and bury it. HEAVY lectures and tough tests. Have a social life? Burn it. If you were bad at chemistry, you will fail this course without studying. Good luck troopers.
Super knowledgeable prof. but is extremely anal about grading, he'll find ways to dock points for something simple as not circling an answer. He enjoys lecturing a ton so expect class lects to seep into lab lects, so u end up getting no breaks in lab for the entire semester. He does curve but only to make up for his hard/long exams.
This guy absolutely sucks just flat out. Some of the past reviews made his class seem manageable but at least online he has horrible. His lectures are 2 hours long each and he post 2 every time there is class, the aren't good lectures at all either. Regardless of how well you answer a question, you'll get a 50 on the tests. Don't pick him.
Dr. Naganuma is a rare professor to come by. He's very passionate about what he does and really knows how to teach the material! Be prepared to study your butt off for exams; they're difficult and graded hard, but he does have a curve. If you want an easy A, find another professor. Sign up for Naganuma if you want to really want to learn biology.
Here's the deal - THIS IS A TOUGH CLASS - Why expect anything less from a high level Bio class? Trust me, Ken is the best professor you will find to teach this class. He's interesting, kind and wants the best for you. Pay attention to lecture, allocate studying time and you will pass. The more time you put in, the better your grade will be. Simple.
