worst professor i've had at uvic
Extremely smart, but can't teach
Knowledgeable & friendly; fair marker; average exams
extreemly poor professor
No Comments
Good prof that gives good lectures. Tough exams though.
Fairly good prof. Not the easiest you'll see. "B" mark or more is achievable.
Not the best teacher, but not the worst either. If you're taking 345 with him it's wise to make use of your old 245/246 texts, because his coursepack is as dry as they come.
Smart, but don't know how to teach. Course packs are useless. No help at all. Killer exams. If u wanna go for masters, u have to suck up to him.
decent lectures, but doesn't like to give any hints on exams. average teacher.
He is very tough. He does not post his lecture notes online (he does not even have a website) Unlike 365, they have nice website which has all the lecture notes, assignmetn solutions and past midterms with solutions.
the worst teacher EVER
He's exam is pretty fair. He's lecture is clear. He's very helpful.
Very helpful! Very nice! Just too many assignments.
One of the better profs in the ECON department. 314 was a hard class, but I learned a lot. I love his teaching method. His notes and lectures are so clear, while assignments and test challenge what you know. 333 was easier, but same comments above apply.
fair prof, easy course.
Good teacher with clear and concise power point lecture notes - also available online). Good at explaining concepts and the exams were pretty fair
puts everybody to sleep, loves math simbols A LOT. Assignment practice "look at the answer key on my door", c'mon man... heard about computer & pdf. ? Seems like he knows a lot but the most monotonous manner of speech makes it really hard to follow.
This man is a combination of the boss from Office Space and the scientist from The Simpsons. Its burtal. His lectures are monotonous and his tests are unfair assesments of the material covered. He's very unhelpful and tries to talk circles around you to avoid dealing with your concern.
Stewart was the most disappointing prof so far. He includes chapters that he doesn't cover on all of the exams and does nothing in class but go over what the textbook already explained. His examples are rarely helpful. Take someone else's section for sure..
he's pretty good considering the course is just an intro to economics. The textbook ofcourse offers all the relavent information and they don't give you any extra information in the lectures.... they just clarify what's already specified in the text. This makes going to class unnessasary, and I th
Wow, look it's the textbook. Look at it get read outloud. Awesome. This was totally worth the money. His EXAMPLES are from the text. Seriously now.
I love lamp.
Read aloud powerpoint for most of the entire course, except when he drew the textbook examples on the door. Mentioned backhoes as an example over 60 times (I counted).
I went to every class in the beginning, and fall asleep every time. He made the class terribly boring.
good place to sleep.
Prediction: With Ken stewart teaching Econ 104 enrollment in the economics department will fall by 80%
advice....just dont. agree with previous prediction of econ enrollment decreasing if he teaches early econ courses.
I had never seen an entire class lash out and reem a professor for an entire lecture period before this. Gives 10% attendance grade because people won't come just for his lectures. Only uses material provided by the book publisher.
This man only reads out of the textbook and doesnt want to help you at all. If you can get a new teacher and prevent yourself form failing,
This man has got to be one of the worst profs at UVic. His midterm yielded an average of 53%, nearly 25% lower than the other section's marks, and his attitude towards the marks was very cavalier, prety much blaming the stuents for slcking off. He regurgitates the texbook in class, and moves so fast, that taking notes is actually impossible. Awful.
WORST - TEACHER - EVER. enough said.
Very tough test, not very good at explaining things, boring, and moves along too quickly. Not a very good teacher.
Everything posted below me is true, so i wont waste time on that, but look at it this way: A kid actually got up and mooned him in the middle of class. That is how bad he truly is.
profound econometric prof, willing to help students. useful assignments, but you have to attend classes.
I feel he is a poor professor, not involving and informative. Everything comes right from the text book and the exams are unreasonably difficult for the lack of resources.
Actual Test Question: "You are the king of Antarctica. Your finance minister screwed up in his calculation of projected GDP... where could he have gone wrong?" Actual best answer: HE TOOK AN ECON CLASS FROM STEWART!!
All he does is read powerpoints all class that are on the textbook website, he had to create a click-in attendence at the beginning and end of the class just so that students had no choice but to stay. His lectures are basically word for word from his powerpoint however his tests look nothing like the stuff he teaches in class. Avoid at all costs!
Probably the most boring man on earth! His superpower would be the uncanny ability to pronounce every syllable of every word he says. He's also a very...slow...marker. His tests are difficult in relation to the course material. The course was interesting but avoid the prof!
wow i dont think he could have done a worse job...k maybe if the clickers failed...again

worst teacher ever. dont ever take any of his classes!!!!
UNdoubtedly the worst prof at UVic. He spewed textbook stuff in lectures, gave us impossible midterms, then steadfastly refused to scale grades on a midterm where everyone got horrid marks thanks to his teaching skills (or lack thereof). Then, he gives the other section his midterm so they get worse grades just so he doesn't have to scale us.
Boring, boring prof, you'll see half the class disappear in lectures and fill up during the mid terms. The one good thing is you rarely have to show up as long as you look at the text.
no way... worst teacher you can ask for... don take his class...
This guy is so horrible. Do not take it. Seriously. I have an A in 103, and a C-. I seriously almost fall asleep in class. The worst prof by far. Do not take 104 with him, he'll wreck it.
Seems like a brilliant man and a perfectionist, but needs to learn to not be so afraid of making simplifying assumptions and make the material more accessible to students.
This guys is a GD joke. terrible teacher. completely full of himself. doesn't listen to questions, thinks he's the best. doesn't take criticism well, haha. makes you buy expensive clickers to record attendance, but can't get them working 1/2 the time. oh yah, he READS FROM THE TEXT BOOK IN CLASS. do not enrole in one of his classes!
this guy made me change my mind about going into ECONOMICS!!!!!! he is MEAN, he wudnt even round me up i was so close!?! Worst experience ever... be prepared to fail. And usually im a nice person n i will probably feel sooo bad for saying all this, but now I cant help but give a bad rating.. im sorry!
HE RUINED MY CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS!!!!!!!!! HE IS THE GRINCH WHO STOLE CHRISTMAS!

this guy has no heart, he is so mean i heard he wudnt even bump someone up when they were .2% away. other than that, going 2 class was a waste of my life and i regret taking this class.
i do not like this class

Worst. Prof. Ever. Going to class made my eyes bleed, but the stupid clickers made it mandatory. I'm sure he's good at econ, but he should NOT be teaching a 1st year class. Completely useless, reading the textbook is enough. I hate that guy with a passion.
Best metrics prof in the dept. Perhaps he's not great for 104 but he's excellent in the upper level classes.
Totally acceptable for upper-level classes (his detailed approach is excellent), but infamously bad for 104 (assumes students have prior knowledge and is thus incomprehensible to them).
This guy is so unpredictable. He can be very unreasonable on his mid-terms. But, the assignments are easy.
the way he smiles reminds me of a fox. When you ask what is on the midterm, he smiles and say "It can be anything that I have covered" (so cunning..). Not too good for lower level economics. spends 30 min of class going over last class material. study the study guide is the best way to have a passing grade on midterms.
I hate the way he talks! He is boring. I clicker is an easy way to boost your marks. Make sure to write down all the I clicker questions. Most of his MC come from I clicker.
My fave! He gets right to the point in lecture. His assignments are directly on the lecture, and his tests are lifted from the assignments. Go the office hours having made an real effort on the assignment and he will walk you through the rest. Make the effort and you will get an A. Such a nice guy too!
Go try to sell your own text book somewhere else!
He is very helpful and he is really into the course he is teaching. It is an honour to have such a clear, concise, easy professor. If there is any other senior course he will teach, I will definitely take it.
Good professor, horrible person. Wouldn't explain why he took of a mark on a test. Seems really arrogant and into himself. Good teacher though, but very boring at times.
I have never had such displeasure attending class as I did in econ 345. He is a terrible teacher, with inept social and teaching skills. Thinks he is the best there is and the best there ever was. He is ignorant and should not be teach, unfortunately, he is still teaching and not retired. As well, his textbook is the biggest waste of money ever!
He is always helpful. He might not look that attactive but he is definitely a good dedicated teacher! People might not like him because of ECON104 but he is a really awesome teacher for senior courses. His explanation is awesome after you learned the basics.
He talks like a radio announcer, but reiterates everything over and over again in different words, which was annoying at first but really ensured we had a firm grasp on the material. Write down the iClicker questions, they're used on the midterms.
Some people here complain about him and I was not looking forward to taking his class. I guess no everybody finds the class the same, but I thought that steward is a great prof. Its dead easy to get 100% in econ 204 with him, just do you assignments and you'll ace the exams. Going to class is extremely important. Missing a class is detrimental.
His lectures can be boring at times, but he is great at explaining concepts in a simple manner. He is always willing to help outside of class time, even outside of office hours. If you put in a decent effort, you will do well in his class.
Did his best to make a dry class entertaining. It was still very boring, but if you do the assignments well and pay attention in class (especially to the iClicker questions) you can get a very high mark. Textbook was useless, but his midterms and final were more than fair.
Great Prof! Work at the assignments and write down the clicker questions and you'll get an A or B. Midterms use the exact clicker questions and use the same concepts as the assignments. Teaches and reteaches the material well so you really understand. Great during office hours, really helps and pretty much gives you the answers. Recommended!
good prof. good explanation. like to help students outside the class. easy assignment and mid term. remember to write down all the i-cliker questions. it will help you do well on your midterm.
Very helpful prof. Very clear and concise when explaining concepts. easy to approach after class or in office hours. I would take any other class he has to offer. Very easy to get and A or B
I am surprised how low Mr. Stewarts rating are here. He is probably one of the best professors I had at uvic so far. He is very approachable and friendly. He would answer any of my questions even when it wasn't his office hours. His door was usually always open to help even 5 minutes before the assignments were due. Excellent person.
The clicker questions are important and helpful. Assignments are dead easy if you go to class, and questions of similar format will also appear on exams. In comparison to class notes, textbook was only mildly useful. Dr. Stewart is a very friendly, approachable and helpful prof. Final was harder than the midterms, though. Great prof!
Such a waste of time coming to class. You have the choice of either iclicker questions or weighting the tests more, but you should go with iclicker. You can learn more from reading the textbook, he pretty much does that for his lectures. Iclicker questions are multiple choice for the tests.
I essentially taught myself the course, as he's incredibly dry and tends to repeat himself for three or four lectures in a row without addressing some of the content. As for the iClicker questions, it's worth going to attend to copy them down, since they make up a lot of the exams multiple choice.
He likes to repeat material and keeps the pacing slow, which is great for things a little tougher than first year econ. No surprises on tests--if you go to class and do the assignments, you'll get a very nice grade. Does a very good job of linking concepts together, which helped my understanding of the material. Wish he had taught 365 as well...
Terrible prof. He's so full of himself, and has a really annoying way of talking. The mid-terms he writes are bloody impossible, since he doesn't even tell us what to study. He says "okay" under his breath far too much, and he likes to pick on students in the middle of lecture. Do NOT take ECON 104 if he's the professor.
The most terrible class I have ever taken because of a terrible professor.so limited study materials for the course. everything is almost on the textbook, why should I sit in the class and listen. suggest never take his course.
Drop this class if he is the teacher!
I have taken 3 courses in total with Dr. Stewart. While I wasn't a huge fan in the beginning, by the end of my degree he was one of my favorite profs. Yes, his classes can be difficult and time consuming, but if you put forth the effort he expects you will do fine. Exams and assignments follow his textbook closely.
Ive got a killer story. So midterm 1/2 he orders no calculators to be used. Come time for the final he says: "yes bring calculators, let me know if you need one ive got spares." Final time: "So too many people asked for calculators, so I didnt bring any." Can you do logarithms in your head? I cant
Ken is an awful prof. He has the most ridiculous rules. "If you go to the bathroom, don't come back as it is distracting for others" "No cell phone or laptop use". Yes he's one of those profs. Classes are awful, midterms are just really weird and unfair, and the clicker questions are impossible. He's the worst econ prof out there, stay far far away
Worst teacher I have ever had. Doesnt tell you what the midterms are on just says subjective and objective questions as well it seems he enjoys seeing his students have trouble in the course. As well teaches a bunch of tough material that he says will be on exam when none of it is ever tested. After taking his class he's ruined economics for me .
Worst teacher ever. If your reading this DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. He essentially failed me the class and his voice and way of teaching makes me hate life.
Yes, he does have an odd way of speaking with the over-enunciation, but if you attend classes and tutorials, and do readings, there is no way that you can do poorly. No curve balls. He helps a lot. If you don't take school or the material seriously, you will do poorly. It wasn't a gruelling course, but without effort, you will fail.
Hi is an awesome prof. i learned alot in this class. his assignments are easy but mid terms are way tough, if you come to class and understand you will do good. make sure you do good on iclicker questions and assignments overall you will score a good grade. make sure you are ready for surprises.
Dr. Stewart may initially come off as monotone or "boring", but he is an awesome proff! I learned so much in his class and his style of teaching is great! He has weekly labhomework assignments that help alot and although his tests are hard, they are fair.. just a little bit too long for my liking, very hard to finish. Other then that It was great!
One of the worst teachers I've experienced at UVIC, would not recommend, especially for a first-year economics course. He overcomplicates the material, provides no sort of practice exams or testbank, and is not particularly helpful when you approach him with concerns.
By far the worst prof I have EVER encountered. I am in my third year and have taken over 20 courses and I can honestly say getting to know him was an absolute drag. If you are a first year student, STAY FAR AWAY. I would recommend taking macroeconomics online to avoid this guy.
Just avoid his class if possible. He is too boring. The material is too hard for the first year student. Just Do NOt take his classes.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER! DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!
Awful. Run for your lives!
Worst professor I have had at UVic. First day said something along the lines of "This isn't high school expect to get low grades." Seems like he gets off on students receiving bad grades even if you put the effort it in. Gives close to zero information on what exams will be on. AVOID HIM IF YOU CAN! Write down iclicker q's, they show up in exams.
worst prof I have ever had. Do NOT take ECON 103 with him. The handouts are quite possibly the worst things ever created. His class was so bad it almost seemed like a joke.
Not really a good prof. The clicker marks are worth the same as the midterms. Read his handout, the whole test is on the handout READ ITTTTTT. Read everything before class or the lecture is going to confuse you. In my first midterm i got 30% but i managed to pull my grade all the way to 72%. If you study twice as hard you should get a solid A- lol.
104 is easy but he makes it difficult.
Very dry lecturers. Exams that makes no sense. Rude. Not friendly. I got a great grade by reading the textbook.
Nice pro. Course material is hard, but test in easy way. Assignments are not hard at all. Although his voice makes me sleepy, this is not a big problem after several classes.
Ken was a prof who made this course way harder and more complicated than it needed to be. His midterms were formatted very weird and he always dragged out everything he was talking about. He did have good chapter supplementals, though. The final exam was almost 90% equations and was tough.
Ken does not deserve the hate he gets on here. I did not have him for first year Econ but took his Econ 333 and Econ 468 classes. I thought he was very good at explaining the concepts and helpful answering questions. There were weekly assignments, which were annoying at times but were useful in understanding the material better. NO phones in class
The teacher in Ferris Buellers day off sounds more moviatated than Dr. Stewart. I put inspirational as one of my choices for a tag because he inspired me never to pursue economics ever again.
Most people misunderstand Prof Ken Stewart. He is a decent person and designs his course delivery mostly centring his assignments. His delivery isn't quite attractive and his written communication can be quite verbose as well, so it is best to get used to his way of communication to do good in his tests. Just do the assignments & read the chapters.
I don't know how Professor Stewart is rated so bad. I had him in Econ 204 and I thought he was great. His handouts are hard, but if you go to class he goes over them and helps you. His iclicker questions aren't hard and you need to write them down because he tests on them. Literally just go to class and you'll get a B for sure.
Course is not bad, stewart assigns weekly assignments that will prepare you for midterms and final, and the iclicker questions are also used on the tests and finals, so study up on those. Plus he's super cute and has a nice voice
Stewart is my favorite guy in the world. He is so accessible after class and in his office hours. He knows a lot and wants you to do well. His assignment are difficult and take a couple hours, but they are doable. His exams are really hard and he warns you that he will pull anything from his classes. I don't even care I think he is a great guy
