The worst teacher!!! you do everything he wants and he still gives you a bad grade!
I wasn't too sure about this class in the beginning of the semester, but it got better. Cool guy with some funny sound effects.
He is very helpful teacher. His teaching skill is good. If you are struggling with your essays, then he is the teacher. If you are very committed about improving your essay skills, then he is easy A.
I took Ken Winkler for a winter course but didn't like it all. He picks favorites and singles out the students he dislikes. He never justifies grades. All he does is tell you to try again and go to dresscher hall for help.
baaaad!!! dont take his class. demands perfection and would only give an A on an essay he wrote himself
Winkler is a good guy and teacher. If you take interest in him he'll do the same in return. He'll give a bad grade if it's obvious you took no interest in or put no effort towards your work. He does grade with check marks and his handwriting leaves much to be desired but if you have any question just ask. He is happy to talk, even about your work.
loved his class. always interesting stories, very sweet man. only uses textbooks in the beginning. 4 essays and one term paper. very helpful, always there for support. if you get a bad grade on a paper, he will let you rewrite it. i would take him for english 2 if he taught it. great professor, my favorite at smc.
Not a class for those who look to slack off and receive an A. He demands much from his students but at the same time is helpfull. If u pay attention and do you work you shall be fine. Make absolute sure that you do your preliminary work(outlines, brainstorms, and rough drafts) if you do not he will mark down your final grade. Overall he is good
theres never a wrong answer in his class and he can be funny at times
Mr. Winkler is nice and funny. He tries to make the class fun. The textbook suck! You will not learn anything from the textbook or the teacher. Do NOT expect to LEARN anything from this class. The class is VERY EASY just DON'T expect to LEARN anything from it.
This class is as tough as you make it; he adjusts his standards to students to get the maximum improvement out of them. Class discussions get you out of your comfort zone and into real thinking; my class' enthusiasm completely transformed over the course. Writing assignments are motivated and driven by high-profile topics. Absolutely loved class.
Winkler has been my favorite professor at SMC to date. He gives us interesting reading assignments, and we do a lot of discussion in class. There are three essays, all of which are given lots of peer editing and teacher editing attention. I have never felt so comfortable in a class before. take Winkler!
Professor Winkler is a qualified teacher. He has a lot of experience in the subject and a considerable knowledge. He is friendly and respectful. Determination and effort are required in order to do good in his class. I have learned a lot thanks to him!
professor Kinkler should be a university professor. very high standarts. you will learn alot but you will not get an A unless you work for it(hard). recomended for english majors. do NOT take his class if you need an A.
I can not agree with the comment below. Prof. Winkler is one of the few profs that teach English1 for international students and the standard is fairly low. You have rough drafts before handing in essays and can even turn in the final draft twice if the first wasn't good. I did not work hard and got an A. Highly recommended for int. students!
One of the best experiences in college. Professor adjusts to his students, works individually to improve quality of your writing. Can't get your easy grade here, lots of work and research, but also so much fun and thinking. He teaches you how to think independently. I will miss this class, too bad he is not teaching English 2. Big loss for SMC.
The BEST teacher at SMC. Take him for English1!
Felt very lucky being able to have him as a professor! He is such a kind-hearted man who is there to help you learn and gain confidence in your writing! amazing teacher!!
Best professor in SMC very helpful. Actually went out of his way for me to turn in final assignment
The best teacher I ever had!! He is absolutely amazing and I give him my highest recommendation! Wish he would be teaching English 2 as well. He is very helpful and will improve your writing and critical thinking skills. I'm a business major and still I loved this class, THANKS PROF. WINKLER FOR BEING AN AMAZING TEACHER AND PERSON! Miss your class!
The best teacher I have had on Santa Monica College. Take his class! You have to read the textbook and write essays but with Winkler guiding you, it won´t be a burden. The atmosphere in the class is always great, class discussions are helpful, instructive and funny. It is a great course that will expand your way of thinking.
He is the kind of teacher that preferrs quantity over quality. If you talk LOTS during discussions he will give you an A, even if you only talk nonsense. Same applies with essays.
Professor Winkler was one of the best english teachers I have ever had. He is very enthusiastic about his job and it shows. He cares greatly for his students and their progress and if you seek the help, he will help you immensely and personally. He can be blunt, but only with the intention of helping and preparing you for future classes.
Great professor! very live and interesting discussions , you will write only 3 essays- though, make sure you put the best effort, as getting an A is difficult but possible if you stay on office hours and really work on your writing skills,Strongly recommend if you want to get a strong base in writing.
I give my highest recommendation. Attendance is mandatory if you want to get credit. 3 essays which there are rough drafts and peer editing. Get engaged in class discussion and you'll be fine. Put your effort on every essay, he is pretty helpful and you will learn a lot!. You will need the book, but not a lot. Take him.
He was one of the most helpful teachers I've had at SMC and genuinely cares about how his students do in his class. He isn't an easy marker but if you can write a simple essay you will do well. He cares about attendance and class participation but the in class assignments are simple and straight forward. 3 essays (2 rough drafts), 1 final. Take him
Great teacher, very smart, funny and dedicated. Makes english interesting and essays not as intimidating as other professors. His lectures are very interesting as well.
His teaching is good, but it is not easy to score a good grae from him.
TAKE HIS CLASS! He is the most helpful teacher I've ever met. He will analyze your writing style and tell you how to work on it and improve - it's very personalized! This is definitely the kind of help you need to succeed. Lots of reading, peer editing, and some essays - but all fun and worth it! An A isn't out of the question if you work hard! :)
Excellent professor, super clear, easy class. Essays are short and with lots of peer editing and drafts. Just participate in class and you will do fine.
Ken Winkler is one of the best teachers I've had in my life so far. I've learned a lot and even though he is very critical (when it comes to grading papers) he makes you want to be better. I can assure you that even though a lot of hard work is required, it will be worth it. He is amazing.
I will miss him very much. The best professor I could ever think of. He has helped me tremendously and given so many tips for the future. Very caring, still tough and critical in grading. Made me want to work hard and do better than anyone else, made me push myself to achieve more. Take him if you wish to learn a lot and work a lot.
He is the best professor in SMC who really cares about you. Recommend to all student, especially F1 students like me. He had taught English in Asia for 10 years and another 10 years in Europe so he is able to target your problem in English. I got an A in his class. If you work hard and talk to him when you need help, you will get what you deserve.
Professor Winkler is one of the best english teachers at smc. Not only is it an easy class, but he is easy to understand, makes english fun and also keeps the class interesting, all while focusing on you as an individual student.
Was lucky to have prof Winkler for fall 12- BEST TEACHER EVER!-he is one of those special people that INSPIRE. Writing has always been a torture for me b4 his class, but now it's a piece of cake! Classes are engaging, fun and more important makes you think! Lots of hard work in this class, but worth every sleepless night!-thx prof from boy from UZ!
love this prof. really helpful. learned a lot in his class. 3 outside class essays. do your best work hard show your improvement. fair grader. highly recommended for second english learners.
Mr. Winkler is one of the best teacher I took in a long time! I enjoyed going to his class. He loves to teach and he always comes with positive energy. Only 3 essays to do but you must do the best in them. He directs you to the right path and I absolutely loved him.
He is a nice guy, but he is too strict to international student writing. He wanted to give the lowest score he can give for every writing assignment. If you have another choice, I suggest you DONT TAKE HIM.
He's the best & very knowledgeable. He may be strict on grading, but you will improve your writing and critical thinking a lot from him. For Eng 2, you'll have a lot of homework, quizzes (every week for the first half of semester). Well, 2 tests are pretty hard. Need to understand all of the terms and stories, poems you've studied.
probably the best english teacher I've ever had. He's a man who lives by basic values, respect him and he'll respect you. He was extremely engaging, nobodies opinion was ignored he called on everyone all the time and held class discussions everyday. his grading is fairly on the strict side, i hardly got a 100 on anything, but he always explained y.
LOVE WINKIE! He really helps you to improve your writing skills. Very fun and clear lectures. Interesting discussions. Just loved that i choose to take my Eng 1 class with him. Im never gonna forget him and how he repeatedly told me NO PERSONAL PRONOUNCE on the essays. haha! TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN!
Professor Winkler is one of the best teachers (in any subject) that I've ever had. He truly inspired me to become a better writer, he challenged me in ways no other teacher ever has. He's the reason I switched my major from business to journalism. He is a tough grader, I always got A's but I never got a 100 on anything. He's a great help, amazing!
After two years at SMC, prof Winkler is still by far the best professor I've had. His classes (English 1 & 2) were very challenging in a good way and developed my English skills beyond what I thought was possible. He's an inspiration and the reason I'm successful in school. Thank you Professor Winkler
My writing actually got worse in this class. He gave very little criticism which was not good in my perspective. The class was absurdly easy. I learned nothing new though. The thing he's best at is spending 20 minutes of class looking for a specific word to describe what the author is trying to convey.
Best professor on SMC!! +++++
He is the best English teacher I've ever had! As an international student, I was super worried of the professors who judge my grammar harshly. Yes, he is a hard grader. However, as long as you work hard and show improvement, you will DEF get decent grade! He cares about the content and logic way more than the language. Planning to take ENG2!!!
Great teacher, took him for ENG 1 a couple semesters ago. Very thorough with the way he wants things, but does give you chances to correct your work and create something better. Definitely recommend him if you're looking to become a better English writer.
I took Prof Winkler for English 2. Overall is class was pretty easy. We read many sort poem and stories and then analyzed them and wrote papers about them. Also, we read Animal Farm (which is an awesome read) and were tasked to do a research paper on it. Prof Winkler himself is a nice guy and is always willing to help. The textbook is needed.
I took him for English 2. Every day in this class felt miserable, we would read short stories in class and he would make us guess words he was thinking of and he would get mad when we had no clue what he was talking about. This class is hard if you are shy or don't like to participate. Assigns a long paper but gives time in class to complete.
Professor Winkler is a delightful guy to be around. Despite being assigned lots to read (I'm not a big fan of reading), I enjoyed the entire semester. Make sure you read what he assigns because he will pick on everyone in class; there's no getting away with not knowing the material. Do the work he assigns and you'll get the deserved grade.
Mr. Winkler is an over all great professor. I took his class for English 2 at SMC and ejoyed it a lot. The class isn't an "easy A" but if you work hard and don't slack off you will do well. He's super nice, a fair grader and if you need help or advise he's open to talk with you.
He is a very caring professor. He will make sure you understand and that you will get a better grade on your essay. We do discuss a lot on the books we read but the conversations can be fun. He is an amazing professor. If you don't like to write or discuss then don't take his class and pick someone else. I promise he is really chill and nice.
Prof. Winkler Has a mastery over the English language to a degree rarely seen. I put a lot of effort into his class and got back writing skills that will without a doubt propel me in my academic life. He is well extremely well read and well traveled, allowing him to tailor his teaching and lectures to your first language and culture. No Technology
The first day of my 8 A.M session, the sunlight was beaming right on to the side of Profs. face I felt like I was in one of those movies where one is studying at a top tier university. Then I knew that I was in for a ride. This class was not easy, analytical essays every day, but the in class discussions led by him were very philosophical.
Prof Winkler's Eng2 class was one of the hardest classes I ever took at SMC. He assigns analytical essays every week and grades them on tough scale. If you need help w/ your writing don't expect to get help from Ken. He will just tell you to go to the writing lab. He replies to emails rudely as if you should know what's going on in class & w/ H.W
Prof. Winkler was one of the worst professors I ever had in college. Analytical essays are assigned weekly and they are graded really tough by him. He spends 10-20 minutes of class calling on random students to get us to guess of one word he is thinking of rather than just saying it and moving on with the lectures and if you guess wrong he gets mad
Very easy class but not at all boring. As long as you follow his corrections on rough drafts you'll definitely get an A. He's extremely helpful and encouraging and genuinely wants you to succeed.
Prof. Winkler is not a great english teacher to be honest. I remember taking him a few years ago for Eng 2 and I still regret taking this class. He grades essays as if you are at a 4 year university. I asked for him for help on my essays & he told me to follow to corrections on my essay. I did that & went to the tutoring & he still hated my essays.
He was a really good watcher. My writing skills improved crazy good! He truly want to help you be the best you can. He is a tough grader but honestly is because he knows you can be a better writer. Just follow his corrections and send emails to him if you have a question. You get what you worked for.
Ive taken over a dozen professors at SMC in all different subjects. Professor Winkler is by far the best of them all. Hes tough on rough drafts, but if you follow the corrections, youll learn and get an A. Its easy cake. Experienced and caring. Stimulating short stories every day.
You see a lot of "Best Professor at _______ by far" on this website, but there is no doubting, after taking his class, that he is one of the best inspiring professors I have ever had the pleasure of having. He strives to make his students better writers and if he can see that you care about your work, then he will most certainly help you out. 10/10
Prof. Winkler is truly a good educator and cares for his students. He is easy to build a rapport and connection with. I actually had him for English 1 and 2 for this reason. His commentary on world events is quite good, and I respect his opinions. *He is especially good for Asian students, as he speaks in many asian languages and goes there often.
Professor Winkler was the first instructor that I had encountered in my academic career that 1. Gave me feedback that made sense 2. Helped me think OUTSIDE the box and 3. Helped me truly believe in my own genius. He is firm on attendance, so be prompt. Trust me. Apply yourself, and he will change the way you approach academics and lit forever.
Gave C to students he doesn't like on all of the essays for no reason. NOT recommend AT ALL.
It was an absolute pleasure sharing this COVID-19 semester with Mr. Winkler. Thoughtful, encouraging, funny - he is everything you look for in a teacher. Plenty of useful feedback and he's always there to clear up any confusion. There is a LOT of writing in this class but if you genuinely keep trying to improve your work - you will be rewarded.
At first he may seem like a mean teacher but he is just trying to give positive constructive feedback. Be prompt to zoom Bc he will deduct points otherwise. About 3/4 essays but he gives rough drafts grades that help a lot. Not to tough of a grader he understands we are all at different levels. No long reads just short.
2017 alumnus here. The experience in the classroom was miserable. He spends way too much time calling on random students to try to get us to guess of silly words he is thinking of. He won't take IDK for an answer. If you answer is far off, he humiliates you in front of the class. If you are close, he will tell you that "you're dancing around it."
Amazing professor. Gives awesome feedback so you can apply it to future assignments. You have assignments on mon- wed and they must be turned in on time. As long as you follow instructions you will do just fine! I really enjoyed his class and the reading is easy. There are only 2 essays so it isnt stressful. Discussions are bulk of class. Take him!
One of the best professors I've ever taken. Writing is not my forte but he made the class easy and enjoyable. It's discussion-based, just make sure to do your readings, turn your assignments in on time and participate in class and you'll be fine. He looks out for well-thought-out opinions and good grammar.
Never gives max grade, is great at discussing the reading material, and fun class. But he told me I wrote in the "European way" and gave me a lower grade after the drop deadline why didn't he say so earlier?? He's a bit ridiculous sometimes when you do in-class readings and expects you to know everything about abortion laws in the 1930s worldwide
If you don't like going to lectures DO NOT take this class! Professor Winkler grades almost entirely on attendance and participation. The books that you read in the class provide an excellent social commentary.
It took me a while to get used to Prof Winker's class and style of teaching since he involves EVERYONE, I mean EVERYONE in his discussions. His class was super engaging and we basically just had intellectual conversations for the whole semester. The assignments and papers we were given were direct and have helped me become a much better writer10/10
He is a very caring Professor I recommend taking him. He never makes class boring and he is very entertaining. Best Teacher Ever.
The prof doesn't use canvas so you need to come to class. He sounds out weekly emails that lay out the homework/topics discussed for that day's class. The class is all writing, no bubble sheets for exams. The only reason this prof didn't earn a 5 star is because his handwriting feedback is super ineligible, if you want feedback go directly to him.
Best English professor I've ever had. Very funny and animated lectures and cares about his students. He is old school so you have to turn in physical copies of your papers and if you want to know your grade in the class you have to ask him. His feedback is good but his handwriting is pretty bad. Take his class!!
Ken is a GEM! He really helped me become a great writer! Ignore the little grades you get in class and focus on improving by meeting him outside of class. He really values students taking the initiative and taking the time to teach. The grade obviously is earned, but it almost comes automatically as long as you try! Also, don't miss class lol
Honestly this professor is not too bad; his lectures aren't boring and his grading is not horrible. There's a lot of reading and essays though. The reason he's a 1 is because his class is MUCH harder than any of the other English 2 professors, and I don't think you'll learn much more from him compared to them. Save your time, take another prof.
Don't take this class if you love your mental health and GPA! He doesn't give out essay prompts as we are "not in high school anymore." You'll get lost very quickly as you won't understand his expectations because he doesn't have grading criteria. I guess he marks papers to give you a random number.
I initially didn't care much for Mr. Winkler. Instructions were sometimes unclear and I even went in for tutoring. Looking back he's one of my all time favorite teachers, very knowledgeable, funny, patient and really invests in his students if you show him you care and want to be there. Build rapport. Would definitely be his student again.
Easiest English class i've ever taken, the content was easy but there were multiple essays(with rough drafts),but seriously his feedback is amazing, he'll read through every single word and correct even the most minute problem so when its time for a final copy, you change what he said to and every time 95%+.Super funny and engaging. TAKE HIM!
Pretty great all around
I really loved his class he made lectures fun and I honestly loved the group discussions that we would do on our readings. A lot of in class essays however these essays help you think critically and definitely help you understand how to write well structured and organized essays.
expectations aren't so clear and feedback isnt so great or as helpful.
Not too bad. Has many workshops available so do not be afraid of essays never bein finished!
Very picky with grading. This isn't a class you can just write an essay and be done...you have to fix the smallest mistakes and even when you turn it in again once fixed he still finds more words to pick on.
Lovely professor, every class we discussed the material we were reading he enjoys having everyone participating but always made it very engaging. Most of the grade were 2 essays one on each of the assigned readings, for the final we had the option to choose a 3 book to write on or go in person for a surprise prompt writing test.
He genuinely wants you to learn, gives a good feedback (made me more confident in my writing), stays after class to answer questions, wants everyone to be included in the discussion (almost every class). Overall, we wrote two essays (argumentative&analysis) with 2-3 rough drafts before final turn in and there wasn't much homework. Glad I took it.
Great professor! The class is mostly discussions about topics he assigns us to read. The grade is mostly based on two essays and the final, which is an in-class essay. He gives a lot of feedback on rough drafts, which really helps improve your writing. You do need to work, but it's manageable. Would recommend!
A cool dude, he tries to include everyone in class discussions and gives out good advice in lectures. Don't turn work in late, as discussions are based off the homework and he expects a physical copy to be turned in that day too. He doesn't use canvas except to post readings and grades, very old school. Easy prof, only 2 essays in the semester.
Overall he makes you fix the smallest mistakes, he really cared about the smallest details and wording, I'm not the best in English but I've always been an average B student. I took him on my 1st semester of collage, his class was the one that stressed me out the most. Do not take him if you are not confident in your essays structure.
Professor Winkler made me more confident in my creative writing abilities. He always gave me helpful feedback on how I could improve. His lectures pushed me to think deeper and eventually write stronger essays as I could then elaborate more on the topics. Very supportive.
Semester one at SMC, he was able to motivate me in my writing skills when I know I wasn't good at. Though I struggled with it, be he was able to fix my mistakes through trial and error, and what I needed to improve on. Take this professor, as he can be able to inspire you on how to write better essays for future English courses. Stay focused!
