Arrogant and not very helpful, but appears to know oceanography.
He's a cool professor. Knows a lot about geography. Tests are pretty difficult. You really gotta put in time and effort to do well.
Take his class in the summer, very easy, no detailes
Totally in love with himself. And very short. The class was deadly dull.
Class is not easy, but if you put in the time and effort you should pass. Focus on notes for exams, but do some spot reading just in case. I got an A...so it is possible.
The class was easy and i got an a and i am a b and c student.
Cool teacher. Learned a lot. Not an easy class, but he gives study guides that are very helpful.
Difficult class made even more difficult to grasp due to his lack of applicable information. Seemed more interested in showing how smart he thinks he is than ensuring that students understand. Tsk tsk.
By far, the best teacher I've ever had. If you want to learn and become a better student take his class.
VERY good teacher. Cares about students. Takes the time to go over concepts. VERY funny. Cares about teaching more than just going over material. VERY knowledgeable.
difficult class, but instructor is very clear and helpful.
knows his stuff. good teacher.
Good class. Mr. Yanow knows the subject and he's very funny, but the exams are difficult and the book is not very helpful
Great teacher, keeps class fun and intertesting. He uses his computer for lectures which makes it very clear and organized. He cracks some pretty funny jokes.
Definitely knows the subject and is very intelligent. You definitely need to put some work in, even for his lab. This lab felt like a regular 4 unit course, so work hard and you can get a "A".
Yanow's a great Prof. He's a pragmatist and have a sense of humor. What he lacks in Height makes he makes up in pure knowledge in geography...Smart kinda fella..
Cool Cat.Knows his stuff. He likes to show pictures of his beautiful son.Take good notes cause the book doesn't cover everything on his tests.Take his Lab too. It's fun and easy
if he was to run for president. i would vote him.
Compared to other science classes I've taken, this one was by far the best. He teaches subjects that are actually useful and his lectures are hardly ever boring. Take good notes and study them and you'll do fine on his tests. Don't be affraid to ask questions because he doesn't mind answering them.
Nice prof. Follow the notes and ANSWER THE STUDY GUIDE QUESTIONS!!! It really helps on the exams. He'll answer any questions you might have. He's very helpful.
he is funny. The class isnt easy but it is very interesting. One of the best teachers in school!
Great teacher! Always willing to help and is very clear in his lectures. Not an easy class, but if you work hard you will earn a good grade.
Good guy, helps his students, good lecturer. Take good notes.Kinda nice to look at...
Excellent teacher. Makes u laugh and makes the class fun & easy for u to understand and he talks on the same level as u. All u have to do is study just a lil bit to get good grades and he made it easily possible to get an A. The tests are a breeze all you have to do is study the lecture notes and you'll get urself an A every time if you study well.
Really good teacher. Explains things and breaks them down to a very basic and understandable level. He's also very funny and jokes a lot. His map quizzes are a little tricky, but those are only the first part of the semester. I missed out on an A because I didn't do the extra credit. Great class!
he is very helpfull, eventough the subject is hard, he tries to make it easy, study is one of the keys to succeed in this class!
HE IS A VERY FUNNY AND LAID BACK TEACHER, HE KNOWS HIS MATERIAL VERY WELL, HE MAKES HIS CLASS INTERESTING AND FUN I WOULD RECOMMEND TAKING HIM IF YOU FAIL IS BECAUSE YOU DON'T STUDY
THIS CLASS IS NOT EASY PEOPLE, GEOGRAPHY IS A PAIN, I RATHER TAKEN CHEM OR PHYSICS THAN THIS. The 1 & 2 test are hard, the 4th test is ok, the 3rd is really easy, even with the note card (which he lets u use in the test) was pretty hard, but really i dont recommended. Take another teacher or different science class.
Good teacher. Class is hard though. Not your typical geography class. Expect learning a lot of concepts and definitions. I cant believe it is considered an "Intro", the class goes into too much detail that I couldn't care less for (Im a business major).
Took the course online. Very nice guy, consistent, smart etc, BUT don't expect to memorize a map and get an A. You actually have to learn here. Also the "optional" book written by Prof Yanow is extremly helpful and pretty cheap.
Prof. Yanow is hilarious! He has a really laid back personality and easy to get along with. Classroom setting is university style lecture. Science in general is a little difficult for me (Business Major) but he does let you use a notecard during each test. Do the practice quizes online... great help!
super teacer one of the bests
if you dont enjoy yanow's class then you are probably a very dull person and take things way too seriously. hes very fun, knows tons of stuff, and is willing to help students even if they never come to class. sidetracked all the time but thats part of the fun. great guy. class not for everyone though. not for those who are stuck up and no fun.
I took this class online. Prof. Yanow provides a ton of information online to help you with the course and is great about getting back to you if you need help. I really liked the class, too bad it ended so fast. Just be prepared to do a lot of reading if you take the fast track course and make sure to use his study guide, it's very helpful.
Professor Yanow is a wonderful and understanding instructor. Don't get me wrong you must pay attentnion to lectures and READ. The subject is challenging but he makes it interesting and easier to understand.
Yanow is very helpful and understanding. It was fairly boring and even more so online. I barely skimmed by with an A. 87% and higher was an A. It is more learning about weather and climate than locations. online, map quizzes can be googled so there is no reason to fail his map quizzes. BUY THE HIS BOOK. it is cheap and extremely helpful. A+
Heres the deal. Yanow is a cool, humorous dude. His class is not a given A, but if you know hot to take good notes, study his guide, and make a notecard (which you can use on each test) you will be good. He makes geography easy to learn, grades on a curb (his A is 87%, B 75%, C 61%), and this class is an overall good experience. Take him
I love this teacher!!!! Fun Handsome in some way ....Stupid Jokes ...He is the best, and his kids are cute
knows the subject very well. funny guy with random jokes which sometimes are hilarious. You should take good notes and follow the study guide for the exams and you will pass!
Hes not a good teacher and is jokes are horrible and he can be mean and he doesnt make any sense his map quizzes suck! And his grading his horrible dont take his class.
I took his fast track online course. There are 5 exams which are challenging and 8 assignments that are super easy. No discussion boards or webquests! Professor is very understanding and helpful. Communication is the key! I got a 74%=B!
Best teacher I've ever had (by far). Whomever says Yanow is not funny or good or caring is confusing him with someone else...He actually made learning fun.
took fast track online course, it was really easy, very clear on when things are due. I used the book on the tests and didnt do so bad. definately recommend this teacher.
I took his fast track class. The professor is amazing and gets back to you very fast if you have any questions. This class is definitely not easy, lots of reading and tons of studying. I worked really hard in this class and got an A. There is tons of information to learn and things get confusing at times. I used the book which helped on tests.
Tough Class. Yanow was very helpful but since it was a fast-track class, we needed to read 2 chapters a week. The tests were extremely difficult, yet the weekly homework was a breeze. If you aren't taking too many classes, I would recommend this teacher.
I really learned I lot during this class. He is a very helpful professor. No need for the book if you really pay attention and attend the lectures. He made Geography sound a little harder than usual but still interesting.
Really boring class the teacher is really funny and cool but his test are hard and the bok is not useful at all lots of studying to do for this class
ONLINE CLASS. Study guide questions EASY. Map quizes EASY. Extra credit Easy. EXAMS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT. THIS CLASS IS CHALLENGING, if you put your best effort you will get a good grade. my final grade B. Advice- LEARN THE CHAPTER POWER POINTS for exam & do the work & you will do fine.
Do NOT take this teacher. He makes geography sound more complex than it is. His grades are slanted but you still don't end up with a positive grade. Class average for exams are mostly C-D. He is funny but doesn't compensate for the class being difficult.
Funniest teacher I've ever had. He actually made going to class fun. Material is challenging (more than I expected from Geography), but I'm glad I took the class. Learned a lot of cool stuff.
Okay read his pp,the book, the instructors manual and you will get an A. Just READ. He is quick at replying emails for online class and is very clear about everything. I'm sure people who say his class was hard was because they didnt read.
GREAT instructor; definitely the best instructor I've had at Southwestern College or San Diego State. Funny. Cares about the student. Good learning environment. Articulate.
I went Into this class greatly interested in the subject and with a good amount of knowledge. Mr. Yanow went over things i already knew but he also went into great detail about then teaching me things i didn't know. It may be a bit difficult for people without prior knowledge i found recording his lectures very helpful.
Awesome class, awesome teacher. Wish I could take more of his classes. Very funny and easy to understand. You can do really well in his class if you listen and study. Take notes.
Professor Yanow is awesome. Always in a good mood, very helpful, and passionate about Geography just like me. Definately take him if you can.
Great teacher!
Didn't know what to expect, but I guess the fact I was taking an online class meant besides the weekly assignment postings, he hardly interacts with online students at all. It is clear you would be better off taking one of his lecture classes as opposed to his online ones, since people seem to like him a lot. Online class was easy though.
By far best teacher I had in SWC. very funny person, outgoing and entertaining. easy exams, would let you use a 5x8 index card, with what ever you want to put on it!!!
Not that hard of a class, but you have to read some pretty long chapters. He is willing to help out whenever you're stuck and will even respond to your emails promptly. I would reccomend him to other students.
Great teacher! This was an online class and I really enjoyed it. You have to read a lot and study for the tests even if the are open book. I liked that I learned so much. Just great.
Mr. Yanow made assignments clear and concise. You do have to study and read the required information, but if he is available to ask questions and provides lots of extra material in order fr you to understand everything and get a good grade. You just have to work for it.
Professor Yanow is absolutely amazing. I've taken 2 of his online classes and am currently taking the third one. The way he has the online class structured makes it crystal clear and simple to follow. He always replies to emails and grades assignments right away. I love this professor. !
Took Prof. Yanow's Geography 100 class online a couple of semesters ago. Professor seems to be a cool guy but the class is pretty hard. He is really organized though, and answers emails pretty quickly. Make sure you read your book and highlight important stuff because exams are pretty confusing. Overall, nice professor with a hard class. .
Prof. Yanow is a great teacher, he is very clear and gives you the opportunity for extra credit, he is very fair with his students. However, his extra credit are not very clear are not updated it is hard to complete them since most of them are out of date.
Gives you a study guide for all the chapters, fill them in as you read. Easy homework, watch a video lecture, write a discussion about it; also turn in some questions from the study guide. Tests are based on the textbook. Gives you plenty of time to look back and read during test. Also some answers for the test are online.
Honestly, easy A. I took this course in the short session, and I received an A. Just read the chapters, do the study guide, and study for the test. Video discussion board is easy, just comment on what you learned. No major papers, just study guide, video discussions, and test. Ask for help if you need it, he's there for you.
GEOG153 is actually the GIS internship. Found an awesome internship for me with the City of Chula Vista. Previously took GEOG 150, 151 & 152 with Dr. Yanow and he was a great professor.
He posts video lectures of himself which most online teachers don't do. He's really funny and teaches confusing concepts in relatable ways. If you have any questions/concerns, you can email him and he actually responds quickly! Very cool professor.
This was an online class and he was GREAT!! so helpful provided study guide questions and even posted some of the answers on blackboard! His tests aren't the easiest but as long as you stay on top of all the readings and videos you should pass his tests and quizzes. I'm really glad I took this class with him.
Great class
Easy but you still have to work for your grade
Always available if you have any questions. The test can seem a bit difficult if you don't do the study guides. Provides a website, power points and videos for the lecture.
Professor Yanow is great! His tests are difficult, but his study guides do prepare you pretty well (if you complete them completely and diligently). Be prepared to work for the A, and don't be afraid to ask him for help. He is very knowledgable about the material he teaches, so take advantage of that!
This professor is the best! Even though it's a online class, he is very helpful. He provides powerpoints as well. You have weekly and discussion board assignments but they are really easy, 3 map quizzes which are easy because he gives you the list of what to know before hand. The study guides do prepare you for the exams! Overall, awesome class.
prof yanow was great! his tests were difficult but doing the whole study guide really helps. he always answers emails and is always there to answer questions. i am horrible at science but somehow i ended up with an A! the best geography teacher!!
Really recommend Professor Yanow, he makes the class easy to learn, and provides all the resources and lectures needed for homework and quizzes. Easy A if you do the work.
Professor Yanow is a good online professor for geography. It is fast track so every week you get a discussion board assignment, a study guide and a test one week and the other is a map quiz. read all the lectures and do all the homework and STUDY for the test because they are a bit challenging but use the study guides. highly recommend.
Professor Ken Yanow is a tough grader, his lectures are boring. I did this class online. The other reviewers mentioned that he curves the grades on his quizzes. This was not the case for online. Please don't take his course if you really are not interested in geography and are doing it for the GED requirement.
I took the fast track course. His GEO104 class moved extremely fast, the textbook threw you in loops and was unclear AND the test very confusing. I recommend choosing another professor. The reviews persuaded me to choose him but I learned it was a huge mistake. Be weary.
Despite the previous reviews. This professor is usually considered easy by some because of this type of class and the usual concept that geography is easy; however, this class is not meant to just finish it all at once nor you can just get an "A" by doing everything in the last minute. So please consider your dedication and your study-ethic.
He gives you weekly questions based on power points, video lectures, and the online textbook. These questions are an average of 20-40. The last two power points added up to about 110 slides and the last exam was 70 questions. It is fairly simple but a lot to remember so be prepared and organized.
Professor Yanow is a cool professor who has a very clear syllabus. You know exactly what is expected. He doesnt overwhelm the class with home work, and a is a very clear grader. If you read the books used for the class you will pass. I would deffinately take his class again. I learned alot.
Nicd teacher but you nees to read a lot.
I like the how there is a discussion, assignment, and a test for each week. I found it easy to follow each task and response time to questions was quick. The tests are challenging. Excellent experience.
Went back to school after more than a decade. First online class ever. Simple if you dedicate time each day to do your work. Study. But overall it's interesting to learn new things in geography.
His online class is easy! Not like some teachers that say "Discussion boards should be more than 8 sentences and you have to respond to three classmates." smh He may ask you to respond to one, but not all the time and he doesn't say how long your post has to be. There's map quizzes, like showing where lakes are or countries, easy.
Easy class. Took his short term online class. This class was really easy. The class consisted of weekly study guides that you had to do & turn in, occasionally some discussion boards & tests. Study the textbook, any notes & his lectures that he posts & youll do fine on the tests. I normally dont do well on tests, but I passed with As & Bs!
Took fast track. Quick and easy class. Weekly posts but no required length or responses to others. Gives power point lectures and interesting videos each week. Even gives a study guide and uses as assignment each week too. Easy test every other week with plenty of time.
boring class, he cant stop talking about irrelevant stuff, he should be more organize, hes grading criteria sucks, only 4 exams and 3 quizzes, hes not helpful at all, you will have to study on your own bc hes useless periodt
Took fast track. His discussions are easy and do not ask for a specific length or responses to others. The exams and quizzes are easy if you study and get prepared with the study guide.
I took this class online as a fast track course and I finished in less than 2 weeks. Literally the easiest class I have ever taken. I wouldn't even bother buying the textbooks he requires, as you can find all of the exams online and his grading is super easy (ie: 87% A). Highly recommend if you are looking for more credits or an easy A
Professor Yanow is really cool and laidback guy! Took his class as an online short term class during the spring and really enjoyed it! It's a pretty easy A as long as you do the work he assigns. He had fun weekly study guide questions that were used as assignments, along with an interesting video discussion, and a 50 question test every other week.
Science has never been easy for me but Professor Yanow makes its easy to understand and interesting. Weekly DBs and study guides and 4 exams. As long as you read the lecture PowerPoints and watch the videos youll pass the exams.
Yanow made this class a breeze. Everything was clearly outlined & dated, & he was really good at checking on us. Weekly we turned in 1 discussion, 4ish answers from our study guide, & either an alternating map quiz (super easy) or 50-65 question exam. The only drawbacks were the bi-weekly exams. They were definitely a pain, but overall good class
Professor Yanow is a fair and organized grader. He makes the course very easy to navigate. He has everything already posted and he is an easy grader. Just do your assignments on time and do your exams in time as well and you will have an easy A. Take him!
Took his class as a fast track course and it was extremely straightforward and simple. His workload is nearly the same every week, with biweekly exams. He gives a lot of extra resources and is fairly accessible in case you need help on something.
Professor Yanow is a real gem. His class is very easy and it's based on very few things. His class is very organized and he is an easy grader. I would definitely take him again. His online class structure was easy to understand and the material seen in this class was very interesting. If you want to keep or improve your GPA take him!
This was a super easy course, and he is super chill! I took his fast tracked course and it didn't feel like that at all. Mostly discussion posts and studying for exams is the class. Would defiantly take it again!
There are 4 tests and 3 map quizzes Tests were pretty difficult but found 2 online The map quizzes give you little time but you need to know the mountain ranges, countries, rivers, and oceans of the regions he says will be quizzed on There was a weekly study guide assignment where you submit 2-4 questions from it which was easy and video discussion
I am going to lie to you but take geology 104 instead of geography 100 if you need the GE credit because I took both and geology was wayyy easier. I got a higher grade in 104 because the material was easier to grasp as well as the tests being on q let. The weekly assignment was super easy too so very minimal work!
Awesome class. I took Geographical Technologies 150. It is a lot to remember, but the professor made the class very straightforward. NO textbook necessary, material is given. Some study guide and exam questions are hard to answer and will make you question if you even read about what's asked, but being an online course helps. *wink**wink* ;)
Professor Yanow is hilarious and makes his class entertaining so the material that he presents sticks in your head. He is very light-hearted and his grading is very fair. He gives a study guide that outlines every chapter and what the quizzes will cover. Also, his assignments consisted in discussing 2 or 3 questions from the same study guide.
Prof Yanow is the best! I took this class fully online during summer school. Your week will be a discussion board post, answering 2-4 questions from the study guide and since it was summer school we had a test every other week. He is the only professor i have taken during the pandemic that is organized! other teachers need to take notes! 10/10
Took PHS101 during the summer session. Lots of video lectures. Each week required answering a couple of questions from the study guide and a discussion post, and every other week an exam. The exams are the weight of your grade.
Professor Yanow is hilarious and makes his class entertaining so the material that he presents sticks in your head, his grading is very fair. He gives a study guide that outlines every chapter and what the quizzes will cover. Also, available even in weekends, his assignments consisted in discussing 2 or 3 questions from the same study guide.
Great professor. No mandatory zoom, short discussions with occasional required replies to other students. GIS/arcGIS heavy (lots of map making stuff). Tests weren't too hard, textbook not required but there are pdfs/lecture slides he provides that are IMPORTANT for tests. Not too much homework! Overall pretty easy and chill online class.
This online course was much easier than any I have ever taken. The class was so organized and it was very clear what was due each week. The lectures were interesting and well detailed. He basically provides all the answers to the study guide which are the same or similar questions on the exams. Such an easy class impossible to fail it!
The online classes were fun and exciting to learn about the earth and other climate changes. There are 5 exams that have 50 questions. Ken recommends creating your own study guide for the exams, it's open for a week for students to take the exam anytime. I definitely recommend this teacher!
Took this class during summer 23, I mean it was a pretty easy course it's all online so I don't have much to say. Just do the homework, quizzes, and discussion posts, the tests can be hard but you can use the internet so there's that. Pretty easy A
Very nice and understanding professor, he's willing to help you out if you need it you just have to communicate with him. He also cares about his students success and isn't a picky grader, he just cares if you get the work done. My only complaints are his grading style can be confusing and the tests are too long/difficult. Tests are worth the most.
Prof. Yanow is outstanding, very organized, easy to understand grading and module structure, lots of fun/interesting videos that actually engage me into Earth science. He's very friendly and detailed, sends out weekly reminders and is accessible to students. I always knew what to expect for HW. We need more professors like Ken! 10000/10 recommend.
The discussion posts and study guide assignments were super easy. You answer the prompt for discussions. You receive a study guide each week and he asks to turn in certain questions like #1, 3,5,12,. Your grade heavily depends on how well you do on your exams, so be careful. The slides have spelling and grammar errors that make it confusing.
Took his 8 week class, total of 4 exams and a couple of quizzes such as a map quiz. His discussion boards are so easy. This class was an easy A. Just take a picture of the map and study it, then use the photo to help u with the map quiz, its really easy. Only 2-3 assignments a week which include a quiz.
Honestly, this is an easy A class, the professor will give all of the material needed for assignments (which are easy) and tests, so no textbook needs to be purchased. Make sure you turn them in by the due date. Gives great feedback and recommendations, and would definitely take another class with him!
Professor was very understanding of my disability and gave me the accommodation of extra time on exams before I could provide evidence about my disability. The course was well organized and you could easily find the modules per week. Exams were moderately difficult, despite it being multiple choice/True or False questions. Overall, it was great!
Easy grader and straightforward class. I definitely recommend.
Professor Yanow's GEO104 class is a breeze! The lectures are engaging, and with the study guides, exams are a cakewalk. Unstuck AI was a lifesaver for preparing - highly recommend this easy A class.
Great Professor, very helpful but was kind of put off when he sent a mass email after the presidential election on how sad he was... like come on man keep that stuff out of class
