stay away from this one people
total waste of time
utterly useless....the prof and the class
Great Professor!!!!!!!!
Tougher marker then Vallaincourt, but a ton of fun!
Not easy, but if you're outgoing and willing to work, she'll be your best friend
Class should not exist.
Oh God, it was hell, I don't understand why this course exist. THis course is useless. She and this course are really disaster of Acadia. I will never forgive her, the only C on my GPA.

oh god.. if you think you did good on a test don't get your hopes up...
She is completely two faced. In class she fun, and nice, but after class she is very cranky. She takes pleasure in marking tests hard and watching students crumble and fail. I don't know how she still has a job at Acadia.
Ive had many prof but nothing like this one. Awful marking and awful class.. drove me cray worst ever!
A very hard course but extremely rewarding! I am graduating this year and because of her teachings in frist year I have been able to reach new heights by applying the course material to "real world" job skills. Thank You Kendra for showing me

You do not have to know the book for the exam you have to be the book
Bad communicator...unclear!!! Passive aggressive and insults you with a smile. Avoid at all costs!

Making an easy course too hard. Ridiculous.
Because she failed in life she tries to make other people fail.
Excellent professor! I will admit she is a hard marker, but that doesn't make her a horrible person, people! I find Professor Carmichael very interesting and funny! She makes you work for your marks, and since when is that a bad thing...?
emotional scarring may fade but that big fat D on my transcript won't
I took this course in my third year - and its probably the worst mark ive gotten so far. The midterm was unbelievably hard, as was the marking of everything else. Take this with Vaillancourt if you can at all!

Kendra rocks! She really does care about her students. Just give her a chance.
Apparently Vaillancourt isn't coming back next year...if someone new comes in, my advice to first year business students is to take your chances with the new person! Kendra is a little out there...
Wow...worked my ass off. Don't expect to get an A, she's the only teacher that didn't give one to me. TAKE NOTES DURING CLASS, that's all she uses for tests so go and pay attention. Only half the class passed. Get vaillencourt!

you'll learn a lot more with her but you're mark won't reflect it. I've finished 2 years at acadia and 20 courses, she was my only B.

Just plain bad.
Carmichael is a challenging professor. I loved her for that. You actually have to pay attention to what she says and apply it. You will learn far more with her than Vallaincourt. I actually walked out with an A and A- in her courses.
Hands down worst prof i have ever had, i warn you, do not take her
Good Prof., just misunderstood.
Key to success in her class: your attitude will reflect your grade. Don't go in all negative because of what you've "heard". You'll just set yourself up for defeat. I agree, she's good, just misunderstood at times.
she's strick. don't be cheated by the appearance or the way she talks!
Brutal, she is absolutly the worst prof I have ever taken. Over half class will fail this seeminly easy course, you figure it out
She hates you already, avoid her at all cost, straight from the power trip store. She will fail all of you, she likes it.
She is having personal issue. That's why she failed me.
Brutal. This woman hates the world. Without a doubt the worst I have ever taken. She fails everyone. I bet she is wild in bed though.
wow can you say power trip? I couldn't stand being in her class. Anyone notice that her classes r like the only ones opened...thats because she sucks! But be nice and she will be nice back but watch out she picks on you if your late. Sometimes it is better 2 not go 2 that class than to be late
An Excellent professor, just harder than some.
She makes me sick. It is a torture to be in her classroom and to watch her fake actings. She ll fail anyone she doznt like. Never pick her classes, if you wanna live ur life.
Power trip, Self serving, control freak. No positive feedback ever. By far the worst prof I have ever had. Hopefully she doesn't get tenior. God help the poor students then.
Rude, selfcentered, all about control, has her favoritys, really... presentation on how to clean a fish. Wow an A...

Many find this prof hard but I would beg to differ. I am an average student (B's and C+'s) and I did very well in her class, because I went to office hours to seeked extra assistance. If you are afraid to participate, she will make you feel comfortable. Show an interest and you'll do well. Great!
She is very easy...if you do what SHE WANTS! Always making sure that we learn, and she helps you with what you could improve on and points out some positive aspects of your performance. Although I absolutely hate the lady, she is a good prof
do not take her class...get in with amy thurlow...kendra is a ridiculous marker and nothing is ever right...i got a b in both classes and worked my butt off...and i am an A student!!
How fake can you get? Artificial smiles and passive agressive comments are the norm in her class. Control freak who needs to bring you down at all costs. Nice in class...let's just say not so nice during office hours. Just sooo bad! Save yourselves and take Amy...trust me on this one. =(
RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!!!!!!!
Although she has a very weird personality, she is a good prof. She tells you what she expects for every assignment and assumes you will work hard to do well. You will get a good mark if you put in a lot of effort. I hated her as a person but she was a great prof.
U have to work hard and sometimes she is negative but overall a good prof .. just play her way.
Carmichael, if you have this many ratings and they are this poor...then we must be telling the truth. Horrible prof, avoidance is a must. She will cost you university scholar when you graduate as well as other awards. Drags down your entire GPA which makes you appear less capable to employers. Doing an inservice to Acadia University.

she will let you know what is real communication class when she gave u an FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF~
maybe study is a process of pain, but it is still really hard to accept an F after trying so hard...
terrible.
If you get this woman for comm at acadia...GET OUT OF IT!!! She will not give you a good grade. She is brutal! And nothing you do can change your mark!
RUN! RUN FAR AWAY! If you want a good mark....GET OUT OF HER CLASS! She is such a picky marker it is insaine. Communication IS A JOKE! THe course material is commen sence, but SHE IS SUCH A HARD MARKER. Im not saying this cause I did horrible. Trust me. I went from an A+/97 in english 12adv to a B in her course.
Kendra Carmichael is a wake up call for all of you that thought english class was a bird course. I busted my ass for an A- and was happy as hell for it. By the time they get to fourth year, the communication skills of her students are superior compared to those who had other Comm. teachers. If you had Carmichael as a Prof. it WILL SHOW
Very intense prof, make sure you read the chapter prior to class and follow her instructions very carefully!
Stop trashing her. If you show interest, do your work and want to learn. You'll do great. I love to talk but was never awesome at writing my thoughts down. I got a 70% in English 12 and got a B+ in this course because I actually wanted to be there. You're going to learn SO MUCH useless information from this woman! I will always remember her!!
nice lady but she overlooks the effort and the studying put into tests. studied for all my tests, did all my assignments, showed up to all the classes and i get like 50 and 60 %. marks way too hard for a 1st year course. this course will affect your GPA. if you think you did a good job on an assignment...you didnt! go to ask her questions!!!!!
This teacher is a female dog and should not be allowed to teach. What a joke.
I love how she has a lack of communication skills when it comes to explaining projects and assignments.
avoid this professor. words cannot describe her. AVOID HER! she should be replaced. six, six, six! Facts
Does not respond to emails (what a great way to... "communicate"), lectures are irrelevant. Take the other class if there are slots available.
Horrible. She forces her students to use Second Life to find vital assignment detail, even though the room she created for it does not work (at least on a Mac, I don't think it does on PC either). She should not be teaching.
This woman is the reason I switched out of a Business major. Will drain the life from her students. If you enjoy your time on earth avoid this class. If you hate yourself and place no value on your time and work then this is perfect. Oh and if you are a Second Life fan this is your class. Trying to find assignments in a bad game is totally rad. Not.
worse teacher ive ever had. communications is suppose to be a bird course however she makes it extremely hard. she likes to watch her students squirm and her midterm was way harder then it needed to be. should be fired
Horrible prof, does not explain assignments, extremely hard marker for what should be an easy course. Avoid her.
Had the pleasure of having her for 2 classes. Carmichael is a firm but fair prof. She is serious and expects serious and professional students that put forth an honest effort. She was always willing to clarify expectations and always responded to emails which were composed properly. If you're not a serious student, don't take her classes.
Professor takes points off for material not covered in book or modules yet expects you to know it. Makes no sense.
No feedback given…ever and a terrible marker. Worst Prof
This class is a lot harder than a first year business communication class should be, but Prof Carmichael is very interested in and loves communication. She is a tough marker, but she is fair. She didnt give us any real surprises. Great lady to talk to and she can be quite helpful. Do your work, don't think it's a bird course and you will do fine.
There is no doubt this is a very challenging course, but if you are willing to put in the time and effort, it is possible to walk away with a good grade. This is one of those courses that gets students to decide if they are really going to be business students or not. Work very hard and go to office hours. If you do this you will be just fine.
you can learn a lot
not the class you can skip and pick back up on what you missed, hard marker but if you go to class and participate you will pass
Professor Carmichael seemed like a great instructor on the first day of class but quickly turned into my worst nightmare in my first year of University. Battling to keep my scholarship, she destroyed any hope I had left. She blindsided our group on what we thought was a 90+ presentation. She is terribly unclear and won't explain what we did wrong.
A lot of people do not like Kendra. However, I found that if you participated every class and made the best of bad grades she came through in the end. Though at times it seemed like she was just out to get the students, by going to her office hours frequently and showing her that you're trying she eases up on grading you significantly. GO SEE HER.
Pay attention and ask her many questions about the projects, plus NO cell phones. She hates them
I think she's great. The problem she has with a lot of students is that people really want a course called 'Communications 1' to be a joke. She actually has standards. The midterm is going to be more difficult than you think, so actually read the textbook. You'll get out of this class what you put in.
I had worked terribly hard for just a D but she seems to overlook hard work. When I went to talk to her she didn't even seem to know what I was doing wrong so I blew up in her face. Lets just say I finally pulled it together at the end of the semester by letting her quelch all over my face.
The lectures she gives are incredibly boring and you are required to do an exceptional amount of reading and then talk about what you read in class or else you could face a steep penalty in your participation grade. The information presented was 90% useless filler material that I will never use.
Terrible prof, would not recommend to any student anywhere
Take this class if you want to fail. Also she treats you like a child. The information is common knowledge.
Boring Does not communicate well with students Doesn't update students regularly
Boring, lack of communication outside of class
One of the hardest markers I've had. She's horrible for feedback, will not tell you when she see's you doing something the wrong way, so that you continue to screw up. Don't even get me started about emailing her, you have to be so specific and formal or she refuses to answer. Drop her class as soon as you see it, trust me! Shes Acadias worst prof!
Awful teacher, does not have any empathy for student performance. Overload on untestable information and minimal feedback on work and group presentation.
Kendra Carmichael marks harder than any first year professor I've ever had, her expectations are way above any first years capabilties.
Kendra is the most ironic communications professor you could ask for. In what she lacks in commuting the expectations for projects/assignments, she makes up in always wearing a smile.
I would not recommend Kendra Carmichael. She is vague and does not support students like other profs do. Classes were hard to sit through and the marking was so picky it wasn't even fair. Top it all off with a group project that's worth 20% of your mark where you get the exact same as all other members. AVOID
Talks very briefly about what we need to know for the class. Gives horrible guidelines. Do everything she says to do and finish with a C, good luck.
She doesn't have a criteria on her acorn, it's just a general outline and she grades un-reasonability hard. Taking this course is awful as a first year. She slowly over explains everything about 3 times to pass time and treats us like were in the 5th grade. Your every micro expression in the class will get judged and will prob reflect your grade.
Terrible
Horrible class. All she does is talk about what you were supposed to have read in the text book. Super unlcear of what she expects on assignments and never gives any feedback
Some things on the mid terms you wouldn't have seen ever.
Attendance is taken in every class. Wouldn't recommend taking as an elective. Overall an easy class. Read the textbook chapter that is assigned before class so you can participate in the conversation which will make her like you and help your grade.
It's a class that's so easy you feel like you've learned it all in grade 10 but yet she makes it so specific and grades so hard that no one gets higher than a B
Professor Carmicheal is one of the worst/bias markers I have ever encountered. She will give the vaguest description for a paper/project, then she will grade the work like she gave the most in-depth instructions. To put it into perspective, If you ask any of my employers, they will tell you that communication is my strength, but it's my worst mark.
I thought that this class was gonna be a grade-booster (if anything), but instead, I ended with a C. This prof is a ridiculously tough grader, and then doesn't provide any feedback on papers/presentations so you don't even get the luxury to know what you did wrong.
Great teacher
Just genuinely the worst
Vague assignment descriptions, hard marking
Tough grader. Provides a decent amount of feedback but still super tough grader. Hardest marker for sure. Sweet lady though and extremely caring.
her grading is brutal
Literally the worst prof Ive had. I love learning and I wish Comms had been different because I think I really would have liked it. Im sad it had to be this way.
Terrible professor, doesnt email back quick. Seems to only work on days when she teaches witch with me it was once a week. Hardest grader Ive head and she doesnt email why when she grades you need to get on a call with her to get an explanation. Supper nice to talk to when you can actually talk to her in class but not so catering behind the scen
Run. Just Run. You will never find another professor that will give you 30 and 40 percent on papers for writing in a way that "doesn't flow well." She takes away points for every time you make a grammar or spelling mistake not just for the overall act of poor grammar. I have a GPA of 3.83 and receive good grades in all other classes. Please RUN
She honestly seems like a great person very nice and seems to want to connect with people. BUT every time you try to email her on a day that isn't her mandated day of work there will be NO response the work she assigns is the same work as grade 9 social studies yet she still finds a way to grade every report and like its a 3rd yr NASA course.
She's a very tough grader, but providing you take the time to actually talk to her, you'll do fine. The criteria isn't always clear, but she's happy to clarify any questions you may have, and she is extremely approachable.
Walking into this class, I was very excited. That excitement changed instantly... she is probably the hardest marker I've ever had. When she marks, it is incredibly unfair and pathetic. You'll lose marks for missing a comma or if it "doesn't flow right". Participation is key in this class and she will have obvious favourites. BEWARE!!
Kendra grades at a level that is simply unrealistic. There is no pleasing her in your papers, and she is unacceptably sarcastic towards your questions in class. If you do not participate in class by talking and adding input to her discussions you will receive a terrible end grade, and she will not like you as she has obvious favourites.
I have no words for this class other than it was horrendous. First meeting Kendra you are greeted with cheer and an excitement about the class, thats all for show. I have always been a strong writer and strong student and this class will tank your GPA. Her grading is unlike any others and nothing you do will make her give you a half decent grade.
She is an absolutely lovely person and the kindest prof I have ever had but DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS IF YOU DO NOT HAVE TO! I did really well in all my other classes except this one. I only passed cause I talked a lot in class but most of my friends didn't. She will make you hate your writing.
Kendra marks like she has a personal vendetta against you. She will force you to talk in class as participation is worth 25% of the final mark. 90% of the time when you answer a question to your best ability she will say her favourite line, "tell me more". This makes her very unapproachable and someone who you never want to talk to. Never take this
Every day she posts forms for you to fill in, which she never tells you about so by the time you realize you have work to do you are too late to submit it. All the other reviews are true. Avoid at all costs.
Very nice but potentially the worst prof at Acadia.. very bad at helping her students, letting them know when things are due and emailing them back. She makes extremely unfair. I personally believe that she likes to see people fail her class and does not care what so ever.
Worst professor at Acadia by a long shot. Marks first year assignments like they're a PHD Thesis.
Extremely hard marker. If you don't speak up in class you will not do well, talking in class saved my grade as I did awful on assignments, she is extremely receptive to the people who show up regularly and speak regularly.
marked harshly on very few assignments. a 60% was considered a very good score compared to an average of 80 or above. she has very limited communication skills and was quick to run out of patience when people were uncomfortable participating or had nothing to contribute Very sensitive professor
Don't take this class if you don't have to. Participation is worth 20%, such a hard marker it's ridiculous. Comm isn't hard, the over-the-top marking screws you. She is a very kind person, but impossible to reach outside of class. Lectures are boring, skipping class annoys her, she very rudely calls out people who look bored, as if it's our fault.
She has a great personality though she is not a great teacher. Much of the material we had to do was done outside of class, being in class felt like a waste of time we did more work in preparation for the lecture than in the room. While in the room all she did was read over the lesson notes and review the textbook reading which we had already done.
Kendra is one of the worst people I have ever met. I went to only one of her lectures then dropped the course. She clearly has favourites and is very harsh. She takes attendance at the beginning of class and penalizes students who show up even a few minutes late. She shouldn't be allowed to teach and needs her license revoked. Stay away.
In your first class she'll seem super nice and you'll think the class will be a breeze until she grades your first assignment. Kendra is by far the toughest grader at Acadia even though this is a first year university course she'll grade your work as if you're taking your masters degree. I know people who have failed her class 3+ times.STAY AWAY.
Just stay away. Communications is useless yet students are marked so harshly, ridiculous. Kendra takes "tough grader" to the next level. If you don't have to take this course DON'T TAKE IT! Steer clear of her no matter what class she's teaching, she loved me, I got one of the highest marks, too many ppl fail, Biz students good luck, you'll need it.
Her grading is so tough, it feels you can never do anything right.
You must participate in her class, If you do not participate in her class you are screwed. She seems like a nice person but she marks like you are writing a Phd thesis. I got a B in the class and i talked a lot every single class, and put hours into all the assignments and final paper. Also start the final paper like a month in advance.
SHE HAS HER FAVOURITE STUDENTS!! Terrible professor. Would not recommend taking her courses. Such backward thinking and never treats every student equally or with respect. Tough grader!
Picks favourites, marks like it is your PhD thesis. Need to read material before every single class. In-class participation matters, if you skip class you won't pass. Best of luck my brothers.
Honestly the worst teacher I've ever had in my life. She marks too hard for first year business students and drags down your overall average by a lot. I have put 100% effort into the class and got nothing out of it. If you have her as a teacher, I feel awful for you.
She is not a terrible teacher. I've learned a lot in her class and the content is very important in relation to business. She can be very nice, but she can also be rather rude at times. She also grades extremely hard and it makes you feel like crap about yourself.
Not sure how Kendra still has a job. She is so bad, I wish more students came to this website to know to avoid her. Don't be like me. Don't take her class just because it fits well into your schedule. I regret hearing her voice. I wish her and her family the best. I hope she has many successes in a job that does not involve her teaching.
Makes what should be a 40 minute lecture into 80 minutes because she likes to pause in the middle of the class for no reason. Grades very hard. Lectures are boring, but attendance is mandatory. Gives no good feedback. Bitter, pretty terrible professor. Avoid her class if you can. GPA dragger. Very very annoying.
Kendra Carmichael is living proof that there is no God. If you take her class, prepare to keep your nose brown. She plays favourites. If you dare to take her class, your GPA will go down, you will become frustrated, and you will talk about her in therapy. I was not going to day drink during this semester. Thanks, Kendra Carmichael.
She's a bad prof, but the hate is blown out of proportion. Yes, she treats most students poorly. Yes, she makes her lectures way longer than they need to be. Yes, I keep myself from falling asleep in her class. Yes, I have never felt more worthless. But she is probably still a person and doesn't deserve the hate. At least she showed up.
How does this woman have a job at Acadia? She is so terrible. Her terrible reviews go back more than 20 years. Does Acadia just not care enough that their students have to suffer a terrible professor like this? I don't blame Kendra for being terrible. I blame Acadia for letting students pay thousands of dollars to be taught by her.
One of the worst, most annoying professors I have ever had. Marks as if this is your masters degree. Boring lectures.
The material seems easy until you get it back and are given a 70 max. Almost everything is out of 5 marks making impossible to do good. Second in class writing application is so much work in such little time. No one I know did good. Participate, participate, participate! You want her to like you and its with 20% of your grade so do it.
If you do not show up to class expect to fail, and if you do show up, expect to fail. The assignments are similar to junior high, but they are graded at a masters level. Attendance is required, but half of what you learn is outside of class or on your own. If you put 100% effort do not expect to get a grade higher than 70%. Do not take course!
Worst professor/teacher I've ever had in my life. She gave me awful grades and when asked why she said "It felt right" Don't expect to get anything over maybe a D+ you won't get it. she gotta go!
Make the extra effort to participate as much as possible and visit Professor Carmichael during her office hours. The course is difficult and can be frustrating at times but if you make the extra effort to get to know Professor Carmichael and put time into learning her material it isn't nearly as bad as other reviews would lead you to believe.
She is a tough grader but does tell you exactly what she wants you to do, so as long as you do it and don't miss anything you will be fine. Sit in the front of class and participate as much as you can. I didn't like that she wouldn't tell you how you are doing in class participation-wise, as it counts for a big part of your final grade.
She gave me an A+ but she never gave me over a 70 on assignments
This class is very hard. I failed first year, retook in second year and got a B-. Going to class, participating and attendance matters. It is very hard to receive anything over a 70% on any assignments so don't expect to much. A relationship with her really matters, if she sees you putting in effort she will reward you for it. Go to office hours.
Prof. Carmichael has high expectations, but engaging with her system pays off. The lectures are informative, and using Unstuck AI alongside the textbook really helped me prep for the challenging assignments.
She is the real life embodiment of Dolores Umbridge from Harry Potter. The resemblance both physically and with her teaching style/personality is uncanny. I had a 4.0 gpa in my time at Acadia and she was the only prof to ever give me a C. She is brutal.
I took the COMM 1213 course as it was mandatory in my first year of business. Kendra is by far the worst prof I have ever seen and was the only course I could not score in. I had straight A's in all other courses I took even in economics and accounts. this course tanked my GPA to 3.7 . Don't take this course and if you have to then take other prof.
Say what you want but Carmichael cares about COMM1213. I worked my butt off to get an A-, but I know many with Cs. Go to office hours, proofread your work, and read the content in her Moodle. It takes a lot of time, yes, but reading the textbook helps a lot. Her assignment descriptions are quite literally a roadmap on how to pass the class.
Terrible teacher and did not grade fairly
Hate is blown out of proportion. Show up. Work Hard and you will be rewarded
Carmichael is one of those teachers that wants to f all the male athletes. I'm a good writer, and I got nothing over a C the entire semester. She gives zero direction on what her expectations are on each project. Expect to work on projects for weeks and get a 60. I thought people were dramatic and I'd be able to suck up to her, but boy was I wrong.
Never wore a seatbelt while driving to campus because i wanted to die before making it to this class.
participate
Way too much work for what it's worth. Take something else instead.
What you hear is true, It feels like less of a space for learning and more of a task to see who can play her game the best. You will never crack 70 on an assignment and I think she enjoys keeping you guessing whether you will pass or not. I suggest for your well-being throughout the semester to wait to get into the other comm class.
Very very hard. She won't give you anything higher than a 70 on an assignment, even though you put in 100% effort. You have to have perfect grammar to exceed a 70 on anything. Try and get a different prof.
I took this course as an elective and was unsure if I would stay, based on what others have said about the course. I have to say, do not listen to these comments, until you go to the lecture and see for yourself. It is a break from a 300 person lecture. She always has office hours, she cares, and she makes class fun. Best grade I ever got.
She really isn't as bad as people paint her to be. If you show up to class and put the time in you will be just fine. Although she is objectively a tough grader, she has a clear criteria for every assignment which does actually help. After all, you are paying to be in her class so it is expected that you put the time and effort in.
Very tough grader, if you miss class you will fail, just try to avoid taking class with her.
I highly recommend not taking this course. The amount of time taken to complete assignments does not equal the grade you will receive. Highest possible grade she gives is a 70% and she gives no feedback on what you can do to improve. The group assignments were set up to receive a 20% even if you try your absolute hardest. Do not take this course!
Out of all my professors this semester, this woman was the hardest grader and hardest to communicate with even though she's a communication prof. She is not clear on instructions and when emailed asking her for insight on tests because she doesn't give outlines, she gives no other instructions. Id recommend another prof or different course.
Professor Carmichael is a ridiculously hard marker- the highest grade I got was an 70. She provides little to no feedback on assignments which is ironic considering she is a communications prof. Expect to work for hours on an assignment only to fail it. Although she's a hard marker, she is a good person (I'd still choose another prof.)
She marked way too harsh fully for a first year communications class. We barely even spoke and it was pretty much all papers
She is a tough grader.
