I took this class because of all of the positive ratings on this site... bad idea. This class isnt an easy A unless youre amazing at attendance and taking notes. There was one extra credit opportunity, but it only added one point to your grade and was only given to students who went to class on a random date. Dont take him for your core classes.
Abbott is the best POLS professor at UH. His classes are interesting and his students learn so much within the semester. If you are uncomfortable with talking in class, this may not be for you. He uses Socratic Method which really prepares one for law school. There is a lot to read every week, but the cases are super interesting! Fun class!!!!!
Tests are based on solely his lectures- anything he said is fair game. Tests are taken in class on your own computer. Lectures are long and he doesn't post any notes so you really have to pay attention. If you can get someone to send you their notes then you don't really have to go to class. Textbook is only used for 12 short quizzes. Avg. class
Do not try to take him online. You are making a big mistake. Stop listening to all these good ratings because that's what I did. I regret it soo bad please spare yourself the hard work and take another professor.
Professor Abbot is great, def recommend taking him if you want to get a good grade and improve your GPA. But be advised that he makes lecture based test so go to class.
Attendance isn't mandatory, but the test are based of the lecture. All I can say is, go to lecture and take good notes and you'll be fine. I took his class for Saturday class and I don't regret it. Make sure you do all your quizes online because those will help your grade a lot. I would take him prof Abbott again.
Took his politics class on Saturdays during the spring. Honestly as long as you show up and make sure to take GOOD notes you will pass. His class is mostly just him talking the whole time. He gives no hints as to what's important to take notes on for the test (TAKE NOTES ON EVERYTHING). No need to buy the book which is always great. Great professor
You have to work for your grade. Tests are a bit hard because of the time restraints :/ So make sure you have a good gist of the material. Plus, some of the questions are tricky. Overall, a good class and I learned a lot!
Be prepared to read a lot if you take him. He is not the best professor but if you want to learn how to read a case you will at least learn that.
If you're taking this class online, go for another professor. He refused to round up a 93.99 to a 94 which is the difference between an A- and an A.
Best prof at UH! Gives great lectures and is a genuinely nice guy that cares about his students.
I took him online and hated it. I waited 2 days before each exam to study everything, and it was not fun. His slides were helpful and passing is definitely doable, but an A will not be easy if you slack off. The tests are online but have a short time limit so you are not able to Google answers. If you studied you will have enough time.
By far one of the best professors I have experienced in college. If you want the A, YOU WILL HAVE TO WORK FOR IT. Reading assignments are very heavy but it will definitely pay off at the end.
TAKE THIS CLASS ONLINE. Grade is based on quizzes online (all answers on quizlet) and tests (based on powerpoints, also online). Do not depend on Google for answers for tests. Read the powerpoints thoroughly before taking them. Personally I would read them the day of the test and be fine. Very easy class.
Ive taken two law classes with professor Abbott and both have been great! You have to do the assigned readings, Sometimes 100 pages or more per week, in order to do well in the class and the casebooks are expensive. That being said, I havent learned more from any other course or professor in all of my four years in college. Totally worth it!
His teaching method is just so effective. It is called the Socratic Method. If you are here looking at his reviews you probably have heard of Abbot and the Socratic Method. And yes it is nerve-racking to analyze cases at first, but you will get better. And will prepare for law school. Another great characteristic of him: he is fair. Remember this.
this is my first law class that I've taken and so far Professor Abbott has been amazing. He uses the socratic method which means you have to read the assigned readings to be prepared for class bc he calls on people randomly to discuss cases. He is very understanding and wants you to succeed in this class. 10/10 recommend : )
This is my second class taken with Professor Abbott, and it was great. The course is very heavy on reading, with almost 100 pages of case-law to read per class. However, I have not learned more with any other professor other than with Abbott.
Take this professor in every class you can. He is highly qualified to teach this class and does a fantastic job of making the material interesting. His style of teaching is different in that he doesn't use power points during lectures. You have to go to every class to pass. If you pay attention and take good notes, you will get an A.
I took Professor Abbott for POLS1336 and it was honestly such an easy and interesting class. He does not take attendance which tends to make people skip, but SHOW UP TO CLASS!!!! I literally showed up to class, and typed notes on what he said and did a quick read over the notes before the exams and got an A on every single one! Such an easy A!!!
NOT AN EASY A! Work has to be put in if you want an A. Attendance NOT mandatory but tests are from lect. Not many ppts, stands and talks. Had the sat 3hr lecture, hurt some days to take notes. Auditory learners this is your time to shine, not much for visual learners. 6 online quizzes 15%, 2 exams each 20%, 1 final 30%. He's Insightful n funny too
I really enjoyed the lecture style of this professor. But you have to attend class because exams are solely lecture based and there is only a review for the first exam. Be prepared to take thorough notes and find friends in the class to compare notes. Only 3 exams and 6 quizzes for grades. Quizzes are easy, so take advantage of these grades.
I absolutely love Abbott! His lectures r super interesting all u have 2 do is show up to class&take notes. 3 tests, first 2 are worth 25% last one is 30%, 6 online quizzes (super easy) & a syllabus quiz. theres extra credit that bumps ur grade by a whole letter grade. no attendance grade so u can ask ur friends for the notes. one of the best at UH!
you literally only get graded on 2 midterms and a final throughout the entire semester. You also have an entire semester to do 6 quizzes that are so easy you could do them all in 2 hours. That's all youre graded on. Tests are lecture heavy. You really dont even need the textbook. Just sit and listen
Professor Abbott is a well-rounded instructor who actually makes his lectures interesting by giving examples that could better help you understand the content within his lectures. The only bad thing is that I had this class on Saturday but he's really great and he's here to help you as well. There are extra credit opportunities as well!
He gets his test materials from all his lectures. Try to take it on a day you won't be tempted to skip, so avoid weekend morning lectures. Overall, pretty easy class. Give some effort, study and you'll be alright.
Professor Abbott gives a great lectures, Try not to take his Saturday class, unless you can keep focus 3 hours in class. Take notes and form a study group helps.
He's very chill. You don't have to show up to class, only for the tests (Study online for them). Show up to them bc he gives out a code for one of the questions and you have to show him your ID at the end. Our grades are literally 4 exams (including final). and also the 6 wrap it up quizzes. THATS IT. No extra credit. And won't round up ur grade.
I would highly recommend him for POLS at UH, 3 tests and a few easy quizzes online. The lectures are super important as he doesn't use powerpoints or any material from a textbook, but if you go to class and pay attention there's no way you'll get less than a B+
Professor Abbott is a great professor. He lectures so be prepared to come to class in order to pass. He is a professor that knows what he is talking about and takes his time for people to actually know the material. He sticks to the syllabus and you will leave the class knowing more about politics than you thought you knew.
Best lecturer I've ever had. He actually teaches you his knowledge rather than reading from PowerPoint slides. Doesn't just give terms and definitions; gives in-depth examples of real world situations to help us understand what we are learning. Makes 3 hour lectures easy to follow & pay attention to. Grades: 3 exams (80%), 7 quizzes (20%).
This is an easy class to earn an A but also a class that you could easily fail. In the semester there are 3 test (including final) and 6 online quizzes from the textbook. Attendance is not required but keep in mind that his exam questions come from his lectures, not so much the textbook. Take good notes & come to class and you will pass!
Great professor. Made the class very interesting and made what he talked about easy to understand. Class is very lecture heavy though so if you miss class, especially a Saturday one, find someone you can get notes from.
You will be ok if you are good at taking notes without PowerPoint slides because he just talks during the lectures. So be prepared to write everything you can because his test comes from lecture. But If English is not your forte, DO NOT TAKE HIM
I love this guy. Hands down the best professor I've taken at UH. He is truly and inspirational person. Give this guy a raise.
Professor Abbott is exceptional at teaching and provides for interesting lectures. I took him on Saturday mornings for a 3 hour lecture, but he made it feel a lot shorter because of the engaging topics. He comes to class very well prepared and gives his take on the introduced topics. His class is very organized which makes for easy note taking.
While attendance was optional, it was very important to help understand the material. Notes were not provided unless there was not enough time to cover certain topics or because class had to be cancelled. He uses his entire time to lecture, from start to finish. Tests were based on his lectures, including some examples he gave.
waste of time
Sooo, his entire class and exams revolve around his lectures. There are no powerpoint outside of class and the textbook is available but he will say that he doesn't test specifically over it. He gave us the option to write an essay instead of the computer in-class (not casa) exams ( I did better on this). I just hate pure lecture classes,
He is the most rated professor at this university for a reason. I never leave reviews, but Abbott gave me a new appreciation for government that no other professor has. I am a business major with little interest in politics, but his lectures were beyond engaging. Great guy, who speaks from a fairly unbiased pov. Thank you Abbott! dont skip lecture!
Lecture heavy class especially the 3 hour Saturday classes. Be prepared to take notes on Everything he says, even when he goes off on a tangent. Pretty straight forward and he is actually quite approachable and understanding.
Professor Abbott doesn't post lectures or let you record his lectures, so good attendance + attention easy A on tests. With that said, the test are usually verbatim of what he says and discusses in lectures. The lectures aren't typically boring, he tends to keep you engaged with stories and real life examples of current topics being discussed.
To be honest, this man is straight wild. This man when teaching he will every couple of mins go on tangents that are interesting but clearly are filler stuff and unnecessary for the class but everyone write type he does this to expand your knowledge on the subject, but this will only make you just want to go home and not go to his 3-hour long class
His classes are notes given in class and cannot he gotten elsewhere. His tests are the notes and he doesnt require too many things
He is really chill and his lecture notes are straight to the point and simple. It is required in this class to have a laptop/tablet for lecture notes. There will also be extra credit assignments he will put out as an option to do and extra assignments on Blackboard from the UH website.
He is a purely spoken lecture type professor but if you show up take your notes and pay attention everything is extremely easy. Biggest problem was how easily messing up one exam can screw your grade but in general if you show up you will pass. The lectures are note heavy but none of it is hard to understand or remember and tests go by smoothly.
Professor Abbott is really good at what he does, I learned a lot and enjoyed the lectures. Like any other class you have to study to get the grade you want. Attendance is not mandatory but his test are lecture heavy so unless you have someone that is willing to give you the notes good luck!
I took both POLS 1336 & 1337 on his Saturday classes back to back. So let me say, DO NOT do this mistake. It will just be double the amount of difficulties. 80% of of your grade are based on 2 exams and the cumulative final. Class is easy but difficult at the same time. Exams based entirely on lectures. Just, don't take both classes same semester.
Professor Abbott was an amazing professor/ lecturer! He made the course interesting! Theres only 6 online mind tap quizzes that he takes for a grade which were easy As and two tests and the final. I will say that you do have to show up to class and take thorough notes to be well prepared for tests as he doesnt post any notes online. Easy A!
Abbott is really interesting and makes a Saturday class worth it. The grade is dependant on 6 really simple mindtap quizzes and 3 exams (including the final). If you show up and listen in class you're probably going to ace the class. One hundred percent take him if you can!!
From the get-go, tells you EXACTLY what to expect for his exams. Not a tough grader, but not that generous on extra credit either. If you want to pass, you should better attend to his lectures since there are some details that some people could judge as irrelevant when taking notes, end up catching you up during an exam
Attendance isnt mandatory but always show up his test are lecture based. Super good teacher and knows exactly what hes teaching. I would definitely take him again in the future.
Took his 3 hour Saturday class, though it was very long and I hated spending Saturdays at school, he made the class intriguing and the time flew by. class is very lecture heavy so make sure to take good notes because some test questions are very specific. that being said, great professor with great knowledge on the political sciences. :)
His class is mostly reading the textbook and a lot of discussion in lectures. I would say a majority of your points comes from being present in class and working on the group project. Overall, the class was challenging in that it was the first class I had to read and prepare to discuss in class. But, I think it was pretty easy to get an A.
I took this class for Saturdays since it was the only one available (3 hrs long.) It was a bit tough staying focused and not zoning out since your there for a 3hr lecture just writing notes. He doesnt round up grades but he does give you 1 extra credit chance at the beginning of the semester. I recommend doing it. Take time to do further research.
Professor Abbott encourages you to work for your grade. This class is a good class to get a taste on what most law classes will be like
This course is absolute bs! But the professor is fine
He's lowkey funny but aside from that he's also pretty strict about grades, so don't ever expect to get a grade change from this guy. You MUST go to class; his lecs are what are on the tests. With that being said, the 2 midterms were pretty easy, but the FINAL? He literally expected you to be in his head and remember EXACTLY what he said in class?!
Professor Abbott taught me a lot about becoming an adult when entering Lonestar and was very understanding and although his lecture were heavy they were enjoying and he always kept the class engaged
An easy A if you take notes during the lectures and actually listen. Everything on the exam is based on the lectures. Everything. His lectures are very engaging and easy to listen to, but if you are not going to listen, do not take this course. The course is perfectly fair, but you will only pass if you try.
Worst professor I've taken throughout my academic experience. Tests only based off of what HE says, even if the textbook contradicts it. His word is LAW. His attitude was atrocious, and that was visible in his lecturing. Take anyone else.
No lecture slides provided, exams are based on lectures only, 3 hour long class with no breaks. Suck it up, drink coffee, and TAKE NOTES. Not a hard class to get a good grade, but you do work for your grade.
Abbott's a great professor, and I wish I took him in person! I heard his lectures were really good but unfortunately, due to scheduling conflicts, I ended up taking his course online. But there's not much of a difference, because he had audio with his slides. I genuinely learned a lot in his class, and I would definitely recommend him to anyone!
He's a very fair and clear professor. He tells you the first day of the class what he expects from you, and has made the class so easy to follow. Some students have issues with how the exams are timed but personally, I felt that when I studied his lectures thoroughly, I was done in half the time. He's straightfoward, doesn't sugar coat stuff.
Professor Abbott is crystal clear on his expectations and grading policy. What he says during lectures are what is on the exams. As long as you go to every class and take good detailed notes, you should be good. His lectures were interesting and you learn a lot. Don't expect to get by doing the bare minimum and think complaining will do anything.
He likes to hear himself talk, and some of the things he said aren't even on the tests. Even in quarantine, he put so many lectures for you to listening which is boring and somewhat confusing. Whenever I tried to email him to clarify he says the same thing as what was on the video. He was no help to me at all, even during the quarantine.
This class is not for visual learners. He does not use PowerPoint and base his test solely on his voice lecture. Get ready to take heavy notes each class. Final was challenging requiring you to remember the tiniest details from the previous two tests.
Professor Abbott truly wants to make a difference in this world. So far at UH he is the only professor I have had that cares about how much you learn and the kind of person you are outside of class. Be prepared to go to class, the exams are based entirely off of the lectures. Take lots of notes and you will do just fine.
Professor's lectures are very interesting and the only notes you have to take. Make sure you take notes! Exams are based strictly on his in class lectures (word for word). Kept lectures engaging and, if you are considering law school, I strongly encourage you to take him because he covers a lot of law topics.
Throughout the semester, all of his material came from his mouth, and if you have test anxiety, he only gives you 30min for 50Q exams, and he doesn't allow you to review your answers. His "No PPT/out of class resources" teaching style is dated; to add to the mediocrity of his lectures, he goes on rants that contain no testable info. Buyer beware!
His class requires a lot of effort but he is an amazing professor. If you want to pass the class, show up to class and take good notes. He also does offer some extra credit opportunities, so take advantage of that and do it. I took this class for credit and he made political science very interesting.
1st day of class, he shows us his Rate My Professor rating. It's justified. His lectures are great, and I can say this as a SATURDAY student who sat through 3 hours of it. IMO his tests aren't that hard. It'll be useful to take notes during his lecture, but be sure to comprehend. Also make sure to charge your device FULLY before class / lecture.
Abbott was a genuinely good professor. He is a very straight forward guy with a no-nonsense attitude. Just make it to class, pay attention, and you will pass this class. Most POLS classes are a joke in terms of how they are taught, but he really makes it worth your time. The pandemic made classes become online very suddenly, but he made it work.
He gives good lectures! Do the quizzes to boost your grade. The tests are based off his lectures, you will not pass if you dont attend his lectures. Very test heavy but if you study, youll be fine. Its an overall low maintenance class. He doesnt give you much time for tests and you cant backtrack, so know the material.
Overall, a very straightforward professor who sets clear expectations on day 1. All of the tests are based on what he says so if you do not go to class, and dont get reliable notes from others, you wont pass. The class is not the hardest, but you will have to put in effort to get the grade you want.
Listen, don't let all the green-colored ratings fool you... this class is NOT an easy A, and it doesn't have to be. If you're looking to take this class only for the core credit, take this if you are able to study hard and can resist test anxiety. His tests are extremely based on what he SAYS in class, so you need careful notes. NO REVIEW OR PPT!
Dont listen to the negative reviews - its really just people who dont put in effort and study last minute. Professor Abbott is a great professor and very knowledgeable when it comes to law. Go to class, take good notes and you will pass. Definitely possible to get an A in the class if you work for it.
The negative reviews are posted here for a reason. Only take this professor if youre passionate in this subject, otherwise youll just have a hard time. Theres no reviews or ppts, and he doesnt curve grades or averages. Its not an easy A, and tests are based solely on what he says. If you have trouble paying attention or hearing, look elsewhere
Please, don't let the high rating throw you for a loop. 100% of the test material comes from his mouth, so you have to try and be locked in throughout the entire lecture. And even when you pay attention, he bloviates and goes on tangents about non-testable material. If you aren't 125% passionate about POLS, don't take.
Abbott teaches the course using socratic method, so if you want to go to law school he's your man. Be prepared to read anything from 60-100 pages worth of material per week; he will ask questions and pick randomly up to 3 times. Group project (children's book) where you have to dumb down a complex idea so pick your groups wisely!
If you are on the fence about law school I recommend you take Proffesor Abbott's class. His socratic method will give you a understanding of how a law class is taught. He also steps in to help the students if the lecture seems stagnate. Go prepared each day of class because he will choose students randomly to participate in the class discussion.
I've taken Professor Abbott for Criminal Law, Con Law, and National Security Law. Let me tell you, if you want to learn how to read and write legally then take him before you go to law school. Professor Abbott loves law so much that it rubs in on you, and you start loving all things relating to law as well. Take him, you won't regret it.
Great professor... everything is available on the first day of class which is wonderfu so you can work ahead like a madman if you want. I really like this prof.
Dr. Abbott is very passionate about law and it helps to keep you interested. I took him during the summer online and he posted all the recorded lectures on the first day, so you can work on it on your own pace. Make sure to pay attention to the lectures ATTENTIVELY cause his tests are based on his notes and what he says.
He does NOT give extra credit and does not bump up grades at all. His grades are very test heavy and the tests are only based off of his lectures, which are really long and boring and hard to follow sometimes. I took this as a summer class online and there was not a mandatory attendance, which was nice. He also does not use lockdown browser.
Took summer course and you must keep up with the reading he assigns daily. Write briefs (which are ur notes) for each case he assigns. 2 discussion posts (sign up for your case) and 5 replies. Final is split into 2 parts are are also essays. Can collab for the first part. Write thoroughly, look up videos/info about each case and take goods notes
he grading in this class is absurd, 80% of your grade comes from the 3 tests throughout the semester which you only have 48 seconds per question (40 mins for 50 questions). Does not even give you time to read the entire question sometimes and just not a good environment if you get test anxiety. I averaged a around 70 on each exam, be ready to work
He might be lecture-heavy but tests are all about his lectures and they are very straightforward. Just take good notes and you'll pass
I enjoyed Professor Abbott. He is straight forward and gets to the point. Although online classes are difficult: Professor Abbott made the course easy to understand. You listen to the lectures and read the E-book along with it. The tests are all based on what he says in the lectures. As long as you pay attention and take notes, it's an easy A
All lectures all posted on the first day of class. Textbook Quizzes are due near the end of semester so you'll have plenty of time to pace yourself. Abbott's lectures are interesting to listen to. He gives a list of topics to review for Exam 1 only. Test Qs heavily rely on his lectures so take good notes! ENROLL IN HIS CLASS ASAP!!
A great lecturer, but exams were not issued in a great manner imo. Probably the most glaring weakness of this class is the way exams are structured. Each was 50 questions in 40 minutes, with no backtracking. He says this was to prevent cheating, but all it really did was make me extremely anxious about the limited time frame.
Good professor overall, all information is clearly written in the syllabus. Grade is based off 3 tests and 6 online quizzes. Tests are based on the lectures and as long as you do everything you are supposed to, this class is an easy A.
Our overall grade was determined by three exams and six chapter quizzes, none of these were super difficult at all. All you have to do is read/listen to the powerpoints and read through the 6 chapters that the quizzes are on and you're on the road to get an A.
Great professor! Not many tests so DO NOT mess up on one (or miss one) because there will be no passing if you do. The tests, if you study, should be very easy. If you put the dedication to studying the lectures, this class will be a good class for you.
WELL, HE IS GOOD WITH HIS LECTURES BUT NOT UNDERSTANDING AT ALL. HE WONT UNDERSTAND YOU AT ALL. His grading criteria is fine 3 tests( very heavy and detailed) and 6 textbook quizzes (quizlets available). I would say if you really love pols then take him, otherwise a big NO. if you messup on 1 test, you are gone. He did not even offer extra credit.
Professor Abbott initially made this class seem harder than it actually was. 3 Exams (50 questions each, 100 for Final) all one month apart and 6 textbook quizzes which were very simple and due by the end of the semester. His lecture slides are sometimes fairly long but they are easy to understand and make the test questions extremely simple.
Professor Abbott does a really fantastic job with communication, especially during the pandemic.
I took this class entirely online. Very good professor, I would say he's your typical stern professor. No extra credit for asynchronous students. Lectures were long but he explains very well. The notes are pretty aligned with the exams as long as you study.
The lectures can be pretty long, a couple were two hours plus. The lectures aren't exciting but they're not boring. Abbott can be quite monotone. The tests are over his lecture slides and whatever else he says during the lecture. He takes cheating really seriously, so maybe don't cheat. Easy A if you take notes and study.
I took him online during Covid-19 pandemic. He posted all the audio PowerPoint beforehand. Three exams, quizzes are on Sam Cengage, Hot coffee documentary is mandatory to watch. Please pay close attention to his lectures. All the exams are straight from the lectures. Take heavy notes, exams are not on LockDown browser. Just don't cheat in his class
Even though I loved this prof, the lectures are so long! (Take into consideration that I took an online class) Some material was quite interesting, it sparked an interest in law for me. You need to be organized and make sure to study ahead of time for those 2 big exams and the textbook quizzes. I'm taking 1337 with him next year, really excited!
3week winter minimester for 2021. I recommend his classes if you test well and are a responsible note-taker. His tests are content straight from his lectures and only that, so if you study you should do fine. Online tests are timelocked so if you're a slow reader you might have a hard time. Explains things well. Respect him and he'll respect you!
Listen and take notes of lectures and you'll get an A. I took the winter mini. Mostly straight forward test questions. The lectures are sorta long, but as long as you semi-actively listen you got it. Despite lectures being long and wordy, the examples he gives makes the material easy to understand, so listen to it. Good luck.
He will emphasize that his exams are based on his lecture. That is 100% valid. As long as you listen and take notes of the lecture, you should be able to ace his exams. I kinda slacked and still got a B. Pretty easy class!
Prof. Abbott is an awesome professor. You have to put in the work, but if you do everything he says/ lays out in the syllabus, you will do well. He is extremely knowledgeable and teaches political science in a way that is easy to understand and engaging.
He is very monotone and a pretty tough grader since the overall grade depends on 3 major exams for which you get less than a minute to answer questions since he states its less time to cheat so if you have test anxiety be ready to have little to no time. Offers no extra credit oh and he states that other classes are distractions
This course has probably been my favorite out of everything at UH. This course was lecture heavy and the three exams make up the majority of your grade. I thought the lectures were really interesting, and he definitely knows what he is talking about. Workload is easy if willing to study even a little.
Professor Abbott is a mixed bag for me. He's incredibly strict and at times unforgiving, so I want to dislike him, but he's by far the best lecturer I've ever had. The exams are tricky and under a tight time limit, so you have to be prepared. This class is a bit tough, but as long as you watch the lectures in a timely manner, you'll be fine.
This class was poorly organized. It didn't feel like he was encouraging us to do well and to reach our full potential. What is alarming to me is that usually students that preform well in a course either like or are indifferent to the course. I finished off with an A- and would still steer clear of this professor if I had to do it all again.
I honestly loved professor Abbot and I am not strong with history or government but he was a great lecturer! His criteria and syllabus were pretty clear and he lets you know from the start what he expects so MAKE SURE to read beforehand . If your consistent in watching his lectures and taking notes your good ! Would definitely take him again !
Professor Abbott will send out emails that will seem like he is yelling at you for no reason. He blamed the class for not studying well enough for the test, while the class average was a 68. He would not return our exams to see what we got wrong so we could fix it for the final and claims that it would result it cheating. Barely any extra credits.
Your grade will be 85% exams. Mess up on one exam then there's zero chance for you to get an A. Requires you to listen to what he specifically says. For the final, he doesn't allow you to review your previous tests even though he says the final will include questions from previous exams. Doesn't make sense, how will you know what you got wrong?
Took this class asynchronously for the summer mini. Even though lectures were sometimes well over 2 hours I loved them. It's definitely not a class where you can pass without studying or by skipping lectures since exams are based solely on lectures. Prof. didn't seem very approachable but as long as you take good notes, it'll be a breeze
Read the textbook
Took Abbott for con-law over the summer, there was a pile of reading and staying on track was hard, but honestly it wasn't that bad. Abbott rewards students who make good arguments by drawing conclusions from cases, if you know the cases then you'll get an A. Abbott is very passionate about teaching and is a great professor.
Prof. Abbott was great! His lectures are super interesting as he really goes in depth over the material and examples. The time limit for the exams are fair. As long as you listen to his lecture and take a couple of notes, you're all set.
In high school, I always hated these kinds of classes in high school but I'm actually really enjoying this class. One thing, a few of his lectures are really long but I don't mind b/c the info sticks with me bc he really explains everything so well. you have sets of inquisitives (unlimited tries to get 100) & 3 exams that are lecture-based :)
definitely take professor abbott if given the opportunity! the course is very well-planned and organized, and the lectures themselves are interesting to watch. professor abbott gives you pretty much everything you need to succeed in this course. but it is a class you will have to study for. tests are very lecture heavy.
If you're strictly an auditory learner take him otherwise don't. You need to learn to type fast because he talks pretty fast. Theres 3 exams and inquizitives, that's all you're graded on, so if you're not a good test taker, take another professor.
Professor Abbott is good professor, attendance isnt required but its best if you go to class because he will call on you 3 times out of the semester to earn your participation points which is important to your grade, he has 1 group project and 1 final exam! He always gives an opportunity for extra credit.
Show up to class and pay attention and you will pass, but if you aren't attentive you will fail
Attendance isnt graded but he doesnt post his lectures so it is basically mandatory to go to class. If you pay attention to the lecture, do the InQuizitives, and review your notes, you WILL get a good grade
Professor Abbott is a great professor and is what you expect of a college-level professor. His class is essentially lecture-based, so don't skip class. I recommend typing notes instead of writing; His lectures can get pretty fast passed. overall the 3 tests are fair but study hard because they essentially make up all your grade.
His classes are based off of his lectures. If you don't come to class you will not pass the class. He doesn't provide make ups for anything or drop any grades. There are three test and inquizitives. The test are monitored on lock down browser. If you are not good with lectured based classes, I wouldn't recommend. He talks fast.
He's seems like a pretty stern, serious dude but I personally loved how straight forward he was. His lectures were definitely long so try not to wait until the very last minute to start studying (you NEED to watch lectures to make an A). As long as you watch the lectures and review the night before you'll be good.
You will learn in Prof. Abbott's class. There is a lot of reading and the only way to be prepared for class where you WILL be called on multiple times is to not just read, but to organize what you've read prior to class. He uses the Socratic method. Overall, I enjoyed the class and learned tons.
You have to show up for class every time. He posts none of his lectures online and those are the primary sources for the three tests, which make up majority of your grade. Theres weekly online homework but you can do them as many times as you want until you get a good grade.
I took him because of the ratings here - I regret it. You have to listen to every word he says during the lectures, and on the exams (on top of the heavy material) if you miss 1 tricky word you lose the entire question. You can't go back to the previous questions. I wouldn't recommend especially if English isn't your first language. Ruined GPA.
hes a great prof. u NEED to show up for class in order to pass the tests, but dont have to read the book at all. HIGHLY recommend taking it online. His lectures do not need to be 90 minutes long, the bullet points provided online help u know whats rly important and whats just rambling, plus watching at 2x the speed is amazing. take GOOD notes
Super lecture heavy. Each lecture is almost at least 1 hour long to 2 hours and exams are directly from lectures. Final exam is cumulative so youll need to refresh and take good notes during the first two exams. Grading is exam heavy so you have to do good on exams to get an A in the class.
overall, professor abbott isn't a terrible teacher but he's a little too strict. First of all, he doest lecture any from the book so you purchase it for no reason, says his opinion is more right than the books, test are based off lecture so go to class. Test reviews are basically useless for the final because it covers not even half of final.
He is good at giving lectures but I wish his exams werent based on the little things he says in his lectures such as his opinions. Also you have to buy the textbook just to do your homework but he doesnt test you on the text book whatsoever. Its literally just for homework. Other than that, hes a good teacher and explains well.
He is great lecturer and his lectures are interesting. Definitely learned new things. I found him inspirational as well! If you go to all his lectures and take notes you will be fine. This class is test heavy 2 midterms and a final. So beware of that.
Professor Abbott is a solid choice for a govt class. His lectures are relatively easy to follow and take notes on (coming from a slow writer). He makes it easy to understand. While he doesn't take attendance, I would strongly advise going to his class because his exams are entirely lecture based. Overall, he's not a difficult professor.
Abbott is honestly a pretty great professor and I learned a lot from his lectures. This class is honestly an easy A as long as you show up to his class. YOU CANNOT MISS A LECTURE!! His exams are based directly on his lectures. As long as you pay attention and take good notes this class should be easy. It is not a time-consuming class either.
Easy professor, easy A as long as you take good note
Great professor. He only uses the textbook for inquisitive, so the exams are solely on his lectures. If you show up to his class and take good notes, you will easily get an B or higher
While attendance is not mandatory, do not skip class because all of the exams you take are based on the lecture. If you attend class and pay attention, you will be able to pass. There is nothing really difficult about the class besides just showing up and taking notes. Definitely recommend taking Professor Abbott!
Overall he is a nice professor, he is just extremely strict. The test are solely based off his lectures nothing else so take great notes and pay attention. He gave out extra credit but it was actually graded as a regular assignment (no extra points). Just come to class, PAY ATTENTION, and take good notes and youll pass with an A or B. Good Luck!
Great professor. Tests are straight forward and based on his lectures which you need to be in person to receive. He was passionate about the class which kept it interesting. Had online mini quizzes that are open note easy A's. Would take again. With good notes, you're certain to do great.
Professor Abbott may seem pretty strict, but he is just really passionate about what he teaches! The class consists of 3 exams (all based solely on his lectures) and InQuizitives, which he gives plenty of time to complete. I loved how he used his own personal experiences and gave insightful opinions. Take him, but make sure you come to class!
Professor Abbott is definitely a good teacher, he is passionate about what he teaches and even add his own opinion and experiences to his lectures. There are 3 exams and no make ups. Everything he says in his lectures will be on his exams (even his opinion). Attendance is not mandatory but you really can't miss a class if you want to pass it.
Abbot is amazing. He makes it clear what he wants from you from the beginning. Attend ALL of the classes. The material from every class ends up on the exam. You do have to take notes verbatim (he doesn't do PowerPoints), but the material is easy enough to understand, and he doesn't give trick questions on the test - not even the final.
I didnt get the grade I wanted only because I am not the best at note taking. His lectures were very interesting tho. You must show up to class because his exams are over the lectures. I would definitely recommend taking his class.
Dont take this class if you cant get up on a Saturday morning or are easily distracted in class. 3 hour lectures where youll be taking notes the whole time. Easy tests (based on lectures) if you have good notes. Note taking is the most important part of this class and what majority of your effort will go into. Easy to fail, not hard to get an A.
He's very clear on how and what he is grading. Tests are pretty much all based on his lectures, so attend lectures or communicate with other people in class so you can get any missed notes. The tests were very straightforward and honestly, very easy. I would only study for an hour or two a couple days before the exam and got a 98 and 92. Super nice
His classes revolve around his lectures but theyre interesting enough. If you listen closely and take good notes youll get an A. Not much reading or writing
The class was very reading heavy but it was enjoyable. Participation is a big chunk of the grade and you have to be prepared to get a good grade. If you know the material well you should be fine. The final requires you be familiar with the book but manageable. Overall he's a very caring professor who tries to push you to think in different ways.
Professor Abbott is great! He truly cares about his students and has real insight to offer. However, this is not an easy course and you definitely need to put aside time to read everything otherwise you will not be able to understand the concepts needed to participate in class, which he grades you for. The class is all about reading and participate
Class was very challenging and boring. His lectures are 3 hours long and he doesnt stop talking. My advice to him would be to at least make power point slides so the class can keep up with him because he talks super fast and expects you to write everything down since everything is on the test. Tests are extremely hard lots of hw.
Nat security law is a great course. I took him for con law too, great class. Taught like a law school course with students discussing/debating the issues. Have to read 60-140 pages a week, so split it up with a partner. Great knowledgeable prof, so come to class every day ready to go and you will be good. Can't say enough good things about him!!!!!
The class was very long and trying for 3 hours. My advice to him would be more engaging when he is lecturing for a 3 hour lecture and to let the students breathe in between lectures. So if you want to pass this class write everything thing down and study all of it not just bits and pieces. So dont miss class because you will be extremely behind.
The tests are very lecture heavy. You cant just read the book and expect to pass. He does provide an outline for his slides which are helpful but stuff he says in his lectures also appear on the test even if its not typed out on the slide. He covers a lot of material and it can be kind of plain. He enjoys the subject of law and it shows.
Took him over the winter and it was a good class. You mainly have 3 tests that are completely dependent on (long) lectures. There are some textbook assignments but they're easy and he doesn't use the textbook for any exams. Overall he's a good teacher for a winter class, just make sure you have the time as you will have to study every day.
Had him for National Security Law. We got called on randomly 3 times throughout the semester, so make sure to show up in case you get called. If you read the chapters and take notes you'll be good. He's not a hard grader if he knows you read the book.
ATTENDANCE IS A MUST!!! Exams were all based on his lectures IN CLASS, he didn't post anything online so if you missed classes, you have to find someone to borrow notes. He talked at a really nice pace so you will be able to take really detailed notes. There were some InQuiztives that you need to do every 3-4 weeks, but they are all SUPER EASY.
Great guy! I am an athlete here at UH and he was very accommodating. This course was very reading heavy and you should probably be reading every night to stay on pace. But he breaks down the material well and it was a pretty interesting class.
Straight forward and easy to pass with minimal studying. Inquizitives are a big help.
While he does heavily encourage to come to class everyday as its the only way to receive the information, he is very thorough with the information and will do everything it can to make clear and concise.
I really enjoyed taking GOVT 2306 from Abott. He is caring and has a different perspective. You will need to study his notes and his notes only in order to pass. Because he makes his own exams. As long as you study, exams are easy. 2 exams, 1 final, and some InQuizitives. Take him if you really want to learn something.
Professor Abbott is very reasonable and will be kind given exceptional circumstance. I let him know my situation and he passed me because he knew I made an effort in his class. His exams are all based on what he says in lecture so don't skip class.
Do not take this professor!!! I have never gotten anything but a's in my life and I STRUGGLED in this class. I took it asynchronously and his lectures were over two hours long and we had to watch 10 for a single test. His reviews are also no help they only include 20% of what is actually on the exam. The questions on the test are worded terribly.
If you show up to every lecture, take good notes, and study your notes + the review for each exam, you'll get an A. His lectures are clear and concise. He does a good job of highlighting important information for exams. Make sure you eat well before his lectures! He uses the entire class time to lecture, and you'll be taking notes the entire time.
Professor Abbott is lecture heavy. If you do not attend his lectures, you will most likely fail his class. He had two exams, final, and InQuizitives. If you take good notes during his lectures, you will be fine. His assignments are due at 8pm, and he could potentially curve exams.
Provided a bunch of resources to help us out both in his class and also in our broader academic/professional journey. The material was sometimes difficult to memorize but if you study/attend class there's no reason why you shouldn't do well. Lectures were interesting, relatively unbiased, and incredibly empathetic. Some tests were graded up.
The exams are based on lectures so it is very important to attend class and take good notes. I wouldn't say this class is an easy A, but if you're willing to review your notes in-depth for exams then you'll be fine. Prof. Abbott was also very giving when it came to extra credit which I appreciated because every point makes a difference .
exams are monitored online. . talks a lot about himself sometimes. gives monthly quizlets . EVERY opinion of his will be on the test. i wrote down everything he said during the lecture to help my grade. seriously what ever comes out his mouth will be on the test. extra credit from exams helped not at all grade would stay the same.
Abbott uses the Socratic Method; you are required to read, but he will randomly call on 4-5 students so only those students will be graded: yes participation is a grade. If you're not called you don't have to present, but you should get the most out of each case for the final exam. It may sound hard, but it's a great course and he a great professor
I took Constitutional Law 1 with Professor Abbott during summer session one and thoroughly enjoyed the class. He truly cares about you, your success, and being an educator. Con Law (at least in the summer) is reading-intensive, discussion-heavy, and you are expected to have digested and synthesized the text. All in all, awesome class, would rec.
Great professor. His tests are based exclusively on his lectures. Normally I'd hate that, but he does a good job of making the lectures interesting and tying in modern events that help you make sense of the information. Tests weren't too bad. He does well covering all the test material in lectures, so take detailed notes, and you'll be good.
Take what he says with a grain of salt, his lectures are about 3/4 personal opinion. His rants have many assumption and never reference sources. So all you have are his recollection mixed with interpretation of the event. I'd recommend he should include more on his slides and to include more open ended question rather than conclusive statements.
Not a bad professor by any means, its just that sometimes we end up wasting time in class listening to biased rants. The exams aren't bad if you go to class and make time to take detailed notes. VERY detailed notes.
I think it is a good professor, and makes lecture interesting when he is not giving he's personal opinion. Tests are not hard, but you have to take notes of EVERYTHING, even if it is a joke or his opinion, try to take notes for it because on his test he asks about what you might think that it was irrelevant during lecture.
At first he seems intimidating, because everything is lecture based. However, the lectures are pretty note heavy to keep you busy, and as long as you pay attention, his tests are a breeze. Attendance isn't mandatory, but very strongly encouraged, because no lecture is posted online.
All assignments, study guides, and exams directly reflect lectured material. He's a professor who is lecture heavy and doesn't post slides so even though attendance isn't mandatory you need to show up to take notes to do well on exams. Overall and outstanding professor.
Professor Abbott only lectures without PowerPoints which is hard for someone who does not learn well by listening. He inserts his opinions into everything that he discusses, which can be highly irritating at times. His tests are moderately hard, which is not surprising. Write everything he says down because he might ask anything on the test.
Abbott is overall very direct and clear with his instructions and grading criteria. His lectures can be sleepers at times but he sometimes will make a funny out of pocket comment that keeps things interesting. His tests are based entirely on lectures, so just make sure you just go to class. I also reccomend joining/starting a discord server
Bro this dude makes exam questions over his own achievements. Why would you grade your students over legislation you drafted??? (stroking his own ego) He also had questions on his final over a documentary that you had to PAY TO WATCH on Youtube. how is this a course for freshmen??????????????????????
Professor Abbot is the best professor at the University of Houston. If you are serious about attending law school in the future, you NEED to take this course. Great professor that really cares about you succeeding in life and making sure you are the best possible student. yes it is heavy but if you put in the work then you will receive an A.
Exams are extremely hard and detailed. You will only pass his class if you take good notes and write down EVERYTHING he says. No powerpoints, no recordings. Very difficult in my opinion but his lectures are interesting. 2 midterms 1 final and multiple online assignments. Don't remember if he required textbook to be paid but you do not need it.
Whoops! I wrote a review for the wrong class so I will repeat so it reaches the right students! Exams are extremely hard and detailed. You will only pass his class if you take good notes and write down EVERYTHING he says. No powerpoints, no recordings. Very difficult in my opinion, his lectures can be hard to stay awake to but can be interesting
Took this course as a required core class but ended up really enjoying it. Prof. Abbott is really smart, he comes off as a guy who enjoys his job. Very lecture heavy and you really need to go to the lectures to get what you need but I was very rarely bored. He is a loud, clear speaker, and always does his best to answer questions. Highly recommend.
I honestly believe any of these other reviews are lies, this class & professor is horrible. Not only does he ramble every lecture about random things, he will also test you over his opinions. No slide shows, no notes, and the textbook isnt help for the exam. On exam he will have trick questions! Please pick someone else if you want to have a gpa.
Soild professor and grades by a point system. Make sure to do well on tests because the only other assignments in the class are 5 10 point quizzes over the month
He was clear and concise from the very beginning. I took him online for govt 2305 and he puts the lectures out for each exam. If you wanna pass, you have to watch the lectures because he usually writes questions based on what he said. You also have inquizitives to do, and they're super easy. Great teacher tbh, if you can, take him.
I liked this prof. Very nice and clear. Very generous with extra credit as well. There was only one question on the final with his opinion on something, that's it. Not sure why all these ratings are saying his opinions are everywhere... they're not. Take very good notes and i highly recommend getting alot of ppl into a discord server to share notes
I took this class ASYNC and it was pretty easy. There are 3 tests but it does take the majority of your grade. The workload is fine, there are groups of inquisitives you need to do which are due on tests week. . There are a ton of lectures and you need to view them because tests are heavily based on lectures. BE REALLY SURE to take good notes!
(REPHRASED) question from the final exam: " in Professors Abbot's opinion, the second amended refers to a militia rather than individual people. (true/false)" how is that by any means appropriate for a Final exam question at a University? What knowledge is being evaluated by that question? It's an opinion, and his course is filled with them...
Its sad that I couldn't enjoy this class because I love political science. I rarely missed a class, wrote crazy detailed notes, watched every extra lecture and did all the extra credit but I still am between a B and C. The exams are intense, the way he words his questions are difficult and you just need to know. Save your $, go with someone else.
I took 2305 with Professor Abbott and his lectures were clear and concise. He made the content more digestible by providing lots of examples throughout his lectures. As long as you pay attention in class and write detailed notes, you should be good.
Professor Abbot has VERY interesting lectures so it makes learning about Government incredibly enjoyable and VERY thought provoking! TAKE HIM! This class is incredibly centered around lectures (so make sure you always go to class!) Overall, the worload is pretty easy if you know how to study. My advice? Keep a planner with you and record lectures.
I got a B in this class, but I would NOT recommend him. It's like playing a guessing game because his opinion could be on the test. I did all my assignments, made a B on 1 midterm and 2 C's on the next midterm and final. You cannot miss class at all because you're risking missing possible exam material questions.
This class is easy and straightforward: we only really have tests and a few inQuizitives [HW] to do every couple of weeks, which are just a completion grade. He hardly posts his lectures online and his tests are based on what he says in class, so it's best to show up and take good notes.
2 Exams, 1 Final and groups of Inquizitives due in each month. Exams are all on his lectures, but please take ALL of the notes because his opinions might be on the exam. However, his exams are not as tricky as I thought. I don't like that he sometimes shows slides and sometimes does not. He is still very generous and caring about our study time.
2 exams and 1 final that is cumulative. There are also inquizitives that are worth total of 150 points. The rest of the grade are exams so be sure to do good on them. His exams are solely based off his lectures so take good detailed notes. Exams are fairly easy but do have a couple trick questions
Good class and great professor. You must be able to pace yourself and actually watch the lectures. I didn't have to pay for the textbook and the quizzes were basically a guaranteed 100. If you fail this class, treat it as a wake-up call and develop good study habits.
Abbott was a pretty good professor. His tests are based entirely on his lecture, so I highly encourage coming to class. His lectures are paced really fast so I recommend typing notes and going over them after class and/or reading fellow classmates notes to compare. Lectures are also paired with personal connections and silly analogies which is nice
Seems like Abbott wants to force people to care about a core class that most only do b/c they have to. Tests were long, questions can be a guessing game. Long inquizitive assignments that he even says do NOT apply to the tests. Very high volume of work, you have to attend lectures. For what? a 2000 class? Save your time for your higher levels
This professor is amazing. Best professor at UH. He cares about you and wants you to succeed in life. He is very clear on what is expected and very understanding.
Professor Abbott gives excellent and informing lectures, as well as having a relatively simple class structure. You test over the stuff from in class. TAKE NOTES. Inquizitives from the textbook are required, but not too bad. Pay attention in class, and you'll succeed. Fail to heed this warning, and you will fail.
I am a visual learner and textbook-dependent student, so this class was not it for me. After attending all his lectures and writing notes I didn't make an A. The textbook assignments are tedious and not on the exams. His questions are sometimes based on luck and his opinion. He doesn't curve too. It's not impossible, but it's hard.
Such an amazing professor. Interesting lectures that will keep you awake. Exam content makes attendance mandatory. He's really funny and though I never reached out to him, I'm sure I could've done so comfortably. The InQuizitives can be a bit tough on their own, but I always managed to get them done and he gives a ton of time to do them.
If you are not the best at government (like me) do not take this class. His tests will use ANYTHING he has said in class. Personally, I had a really hard time learning/studying the content because of how much information was thrown at us during lectures. Attendance is not required. He's a good professor, but very detailed and takes the job seriously
The class is moderately easy, and his tests only consists of what he lectures and nothing else. Attendance isn't really mandatory but to do well in the class, it really matters on if you go or not. Lots of memorization in the class. He does give extra credit in the semester. The textbook assignments aren't hard; you get a lot of time to do them.
very good
Professor Abbott's class is lecture-based and he often does not use presentation so it is based on the content that is said in the lecture. So attending class is mandatory or you will miss the test content. The class is based on 3 exams and a few inquiztives.
Not a bad professor but lectures are very lengthy. He rarely does slides and doesn't post content from the lectures if you missed class, so you need to attend. If you aren't good at history (like me) form a study group, it helped me so much in the end.
GOV2306; Basically you have to show up to class and write down everything he says and burn it into memory. If you can't do that then you will fail.
This class is VERY lecture heavy. If you do not go to class you will not pass. Must write down every little thing during the lecture and have detailed notes. Consists of two major exams and one final that make up for most of the grade in the class. Inquizitives are not helpful and are only worth a small fraction of your overall grade.
this dude is a juris doctor !! very knowledgeable !! he genuinely cares about his students, wants them to be informed, and cracks the occasional (actually funny) joke to keep the class engaged. he does not post his lectures and his exams are 100% lecture-based. just grow up, take detailed notes, study them, and you'll do good.
Great lecturer. Though attendance is not mandatory, be sure to show up as exams are based fully on lectures. He's great at conveying information and lectures are super easy to follow along with. I thought class was awesome as he does not use lecture slides often which for me personally makes it easier to take good notes.
GOV 2305 was an easy class with Professor Abbott. We are given 2 midterms and 1 final, and all his exams are based off his lectures. Attendance is not mandatory, but in order to pass the class it is important to go each lecture. We are given inquizitives throughout the semester, which are easy completion grades.
In all honesty lectures are important you have inquizitives which are easy 2 midterms and a final. Overall make sure you have a group and make quizlets they are clutch for midterms and finals all about memorizing.
I took Professor Abbott for gov 2305. His lectures are lecture-heavy, but you will do well if you attend class. His tests are very specific so make sure you study. Overall he is a great lecturer and he made his class interesting. It's an easy class if you put in the work!
abbott was super kind to me~ during the first exam my test messed up and kicked me out. i was able to get back in and finished but was worried he'd give me a 0. emailed him and explained the situation and he said don't worry about it, all is well. super thankful. his test reviews are your best friend for exams! know them like the back of your hand.
If you're looking for an easy A, don't take him. He makes his exams harder than they should be. Only 1 extra credit assignment was given. You will have 2 exams and the final which is cumulative. Honestly, I feel like you could find a better prof.
Professor Abbott is a must-take professor if you are interested in going into law. He will throw you right into it: you will cover an entire casebook for the semester and you better be ready to read 125+ pages of content a week to cover during lectures. He uses Socratic method but this class is so rewarding if you put in the effort. Not an easy A!
He was honestly just ok. Pay attention is class, utilize the reviews, and it's an easy A. Also do your inquizitives. He has an 8pm deadline, so pay attention to that. Those inquizitives can be the difference between a B+ and an A-! He was also very informational, and if I cared about government, I feel I would've learned a lot.
The inquizitives are an easy grade so the main thing you gotta worry about are the exams which go over his lectures. It's important to take careful notes on his lectures and show up to every one.
Professor Abbott is very knowledgeable, and designs his class to work similarly to a law class to help students prepare for law school. Attendance is partially mandatory, as he'll call on you 3 times throughout the semester to be one of 2-3 students to answer questions for that day, and if you're not there you'll lose points. A great professor!
I strongly suggest against skipping lectures because the material given, and his opinion in those lectures is what will be covered on the exam. However, if you do, I hope you have friends that take extremely good notes because if you don't, you're essentially screwed because he doesn't post the slides. Exams are what makes or break your grade!
Cannot skip a lecture, and if you do make sure you get really good detailed notes. His test are purely based about what he talks about in class. Very niche things that he talks about will appear on the test. 3 total tests and Inquisitives. I never got an A on a test but ended the semester with an A-, make sure to get all the soft points.
MY FAV PROFESSOR! You don't have to go to class but I recommend it! Took him for both 2305 & 2306. Inquizitives are super easy and turn them in on time. Do the extra credit because it truly helps with your grade. Test aren't hard just make sure you study. A groupme is such a big help I suggest you make one with the whole class. Very knowledgeable.
I took him for both GOVT 2305 and 2306, I think he's a wonderful professor who really wants his students to succeed. This course is really test heavy, I think your final grade is like 75% tests, while rest are inquizitives (Easy points) Go to every lecture and pay attention. The people who do bad in this class are lazy and don't go to lectures
Took him for GOVT 2306. He's alright, super lecture heavy, attend class or you WILL fail. The right answer to his tests are based on his opinions. Take notes of EVERYTHING he says because it could be on the test. Study the review because most q's on tests are from there.
If you plan to go to law school, this class will prepare you for it! You must read a lot since you will be cold-call 3 times in the semester, 1 group project (outline of the cases), and one final paper. You have to read about 100 pages a week if you get cold call in class, but the cases are extremely interesting. I enjoyed this class!
The tests are easy to prepare for and questions are mostly from the review sheet he gives. If you pay attention in the class you'll do great.
This class was a bit harder than Gov 2306 so expect to put in some extra work. He doesn't take attendance, but the tests are completely based on the lectures so make sure to go. He does have some homework that uses a textbook but he gives a lot of time to complete them and they're easy. Some extra credit. Overall he's a pretty good teacher.
Professor Abbott is so incredibly real when it comes to what he teaches; you can tell that he actually cares about what he's talking about. I normally dislike history/government classes, but just going to his lectures changed my viewpoint on lots of things. Exam wise, all of his exams are based off his lectures, so go to class!
Professor Abbott is an amazing lecturer. Initially, I was put off when he said that he would not post notes or slides online and that everything on the test would come from the lectures in class. However, I'm glad I stayed. His lectures were amazing and it was very easy to stay engaged. His tests were fair and taken online.
Amusing lectures but not for the visual learners. He lectures fast with no microphone so record lectures and type EVERYTHING. 2 midterms, 1 final, and a group of inquizitives due before each exam, the reviews really help and google the inquizitives. Don't read the textbook. Gives extra credit and curved a midterm.
Can certainly find a better prof. For a basic required class it was made much more serious than need be. Test questions are based on his personal opinion from in class lectures so don't skip class. He often brags about getting students expelled for cheating. To find the notes you have to sift through ages of rambling nonsense. Find a better class.
Textbook doesn't do much, but Inquizitives are a grade unfortunately. Go to class and take notes! He uploads the slides on a pdf. Tests aren't that bad. I zone out a lot. Lockdown Browser tests at home.
I really enjoyed taking this class. Attendance isn't mandatory, but Professor Abbott's exams are off of his lectures and not the textbook, so it's important to attend class. He's out a lot of extra credit, and his lectures are very interesting to listen to. Overall, 10/10 recommend taking his class.
His exams are based on his lectures only, so it's important to come to class and take notes, he uploads the slides he uses to lecture before class, his lectures are entertaining though so it's fine. Exams are strictly multiple choice and he never tries to trick you with a question, very easy. Overall Professor Abbott is an awesome professor.
Abbott was a great professor. it's not an easy A class, you need to take notes and study hard for each exam. exams aren't bad, they're mostly straightforward and easy if you really study for them. best thing for exams is to fully understand every single topic he includes in review sheets, then review all your notes. Gives extra credit.
Intro to con law was my first pre law class taken. The syllabus makes the class look intimidating but it really wasn't. I enjoyed this class and as long as you read and know what you're talking about during cold calls, you'll be fine. Skipping out on reading will hurt you at the end during the essay exams. Take this class with an open mind too.
Very great professor, he has a clear criteria. Show up to class and you will do well.
Professor Abbott is an amazing professor who truly cares about his students, and it is obvious in how he prepares them for law school. There is definitely a lot of reading, but again, that is what law school consists of and it is better to prepare yourself now rather than hit by the workload wave of law school. I absolutely recommend him!
He talks a lot but eventually gets to the point. Make sure you attend every class because the tests are solely based on what he adds in the lectures. He will give you a document with all the content for the lesson but everything he adds is what will be on the test. Stay on top of your work and you should be fine.
He's a good professor, and his tests aren't unnecessarily difficult. There's plenty of extra credit given. I definitively could've gotten an A in the class if I put in more effort into studying. Attendance isn't mandatory but there are a few questions on the exam that are based on what he said during lecture.
I enjoyed being in that class. The professor was great, lectures were good, and is always willing to answer any questions about government. He does give extra credit opportunities and the tests aren't that bad as long as you attend the class, take good notes and study. It sucks about the grade I was given but I enjoyed the class overall.
I took this class online as a winter mini session, the lectures videos are usually 1-2 hours long but he gives a lot of examples to understand the content more. He also does teams meeting in going over the lectures and provides study guides for exams. Always get ahead on the lecture videos, assignments and you should be good in passing his class.
Attendance wasn't mandatory but exams are based on his lectures so I highly recommend you go. Without taking notes from his lectures you probably won't do well. He gave extra credit (but said he wouldn't) and he boosted my grade at the end of the semester (B to A-). Homework is really easy you just complete InQuizitive (gives a chance to get a 100)
His tests are based on the lectures, so while attendance isn't mandatory, you won't make a good grade if you don't go. It's pretty easy to get an A or A-.
Professor Abbott makes it very clear what his expectations are and it is easy to get an A. There are a few textbook assignment (you can just basically click through them) and 3 tests. The tests are based on the lectures so you need to show up to get a good grade. Overall, he's a pretty good professor and the class is easy.
This is by far the best professor I've ever taken. He's got this biology major considering taking the bar lol. I will say you cannot miss class, and MUST take detailed notes during lecture. I never minded going to his class though. Exams were very straighforward, and accompanied by a review. If you take good notes you are guaranteed to do well.
took his GOV2305 class over the winter and I loved his lectures and resources he had, they were exactly like the tests and he told the class how the questions were going to be like. he had weekly meetings on teams that helped. one thing I will say tho is I don't like how a 94-100 is an A, I was gonna settle for a A- but I got lucky during the final
I would recommend doing all the extra credit he gives, since that's the only extra credit he gives. A pro is that there's no class on the day of the tests, the tests are online, and you have all day to take it. I do highly recommend going to the class lectures, because the tests are lecture-based.
He is a great teacher but his class is only lectures that you need to take notes on to pass the tests. Attendance isn't mandatory but if you don't go to class you most likely won't pass. There are some homework assignments but they are very easy and you have months to do them. Highly recommend him if you actually want to learn about a subject.
The professor's lectures are essential for doing well in this class, as the exams are largely based on the material covered in them. While attendance is not mandatory, it's highly recommended to stay on top of the content. The workload is manageable, with a few easy assignments, and the professor provides opportunities for extra credit.
Professor Abbott's GOVT2305 class is pretty straightforward - focus on lecture notes, do the easy assignments, and you'll likely get a solid grade. Using resources like unstuckstudy AI alongside the lectures really helps with test prep. Attendance is a must, but the workload is manageable.
Professor Abbott was a great professor. Always attend his lectures as he is very lecture-heavy because all test questions come from his notes however some things he mentions in his lectures will be necessary to jot down in detail as the questions also come from what comes out of his mouth. Just pay attention and you'll get an easy A.
I cannot recommend this professor enough. He is well spoken, unbiased, and very informative. By far, the most memorable and informative class I have taken.
I've taken him for Con Law 1&2, and I'm now taking him for NS Law. He runs these like Law School classes. He will call on a selection of students each class and socratic-method them about the week's reading. You will not pass his class if you do not read the law book. Make sure you're prepared. Missing class will bite you in the butt for the final.
Interesting guy with a lot to say. I took this class thinking it would be a mind numbing required course, but was surprised to be genuinely interested and I feel that I've learned a lot from him.
I think he is a very good professor, and I learned a lot from his lectures. He provides helpful real-life examples that make the concepts more tangible and easier to visualize. His passion for the subject is evident, and he effectively conveys that enthusiasm to the class, which makes the learning experience even more engaging
Great professor. I was worried at first because of his reluctance to give out extra credit stated in the syllabus but bro gives out extra credit and curves like crazy (well, at least for this semester). He's also a great lecturer and gives real-life applicable scenarios relating to what he's teaching making the information stick in my head more
This class was fair, It was one of my harder ones this semester but it's really up to you how hard you make the class. Exams aren't hard but you have to study several days in advance to cover the wide variety of topics. There are also a few times he gives extra credit so if you take this course make sure you show up for that.
I took GOV 2305, his exams are based on what he says during his lecture so taking notes is important. He did do online assignments that were easy and he gave you around 2-3 weeks to complete those.
Amazing teacher and mostly unbiased. He is lecture heavy, but very entertaining. Pay attention in class and you'll do great. I would absolutely recommend him if you're interested in Law or PoliSci. Great Gov't teacher, and you can tell her really cares about his students.
TAKE HIS CLASS. I had him for GOVT 2306 & 2305, passed with an A. His class is only comprised of 3 exams and Inquizitives. He does give outlines for each exam BUT you still have to attend class or make a friend to share notes, because some of the questions he puts on the exams are literally from his mouth and not even on the outline. Also gives EC!
This class was made a lot harder than it had to be for a core curriculum class. His exams are based purely off of his own lectures and beliefs, so you could only study lecture notes for exams. Only thing is that he gives quite a bit extra credit that accumulates up well into the final semester grade.
One weekly in-person lecture, rest online. 16 open-note InQuizitive, 4 exams via Respondus LockDown Browser + Webcam with Study Guide. 1 group project for extra credit. DO IT! Attend class: take notes, organize, study night before and day of exams for an A. Exams only lecture-based. Gave unexpected curves on all exams. Entertaining and real.
Teaches it just like a real law school course and gives invaluable experience and advice. For many friends of mine classes with Abbott have confirmed that they do want to go to law school or helped them realize they don't (better to figure that out sooner rather than later). Fair grader, wants you to succeed, NOT A BLOW OFF CLASS THOUGH!
If you want to go to law school, take this class. Abbott is an amazing and engaging professors. He teaches using the Socratic method, like how law school does. His hypotheticals are very interesting and makes you critically think about the content you're learning. This class is extremely reading intensive and participation is from the reading.
Probably one of the best professors UH has. Abbot teaches using the Socratic method, like how law school does. His hypotheticals are very interesting and makes you critically think about the content you're learning. This class is extremely reading intensive and participation is from the assigned readings of the week. Amazing pre-law school class.
Great class, great professor/lecturer, and really enjoyed the course material. Formats the class like a law class and colds calls students based on the reading material for that week. Grades us accordingly and takes into consideration that we are just starting to learn the material. You do need to keep up with the readings, not a blow off class.
6 random students are chosen a day to answer questions about the readings. You have one group project outline of the required book on a word document (due at the end of the semester). The final exam is long but not very hard if you do your readings and come to class. Try to take one of his courses as a trial before taking multiple. Great Professor!
Chooses random students to go over the assign readings & you go 3 times a semester. You have a group project (choose good ppl) and a final. Heavy reading but if you attend and read you will do good. He does not do extra credit (he did it with my class but not might do with yours). He is a great professor!
Professor Abbott is really nice, the class was very easy, though there was a lot of readings, if you come to class you should be fine. He really cares about our opinions on different cases; we sometimes laugh on some cases. He gives a random extra credit during the semester, which is helpful.
Professor Abbott really cares about his students, and his class is pretty straightforward. There are three participation grades, a group project, and a final. As long as you show up to class, the final should be easy. He gave us an extra credit opportunity in the middle of the semester.
Probably the best professor i've had this semester when it came to giving interesting lectures. Tests and final exam are all easy if you study the notes a few times. Homework assignments are also very easy, just dont wait till the day they're due.
He gave so many examples to make you understand all the content he teaches. Attendance isn't mandatory but anything he SAYS during lectures are fair game for the exam. He is very straightforward in the syllabus and leaves no question about anything. He is pretty funny and caring about his students though he doesn't come off that way at first.
I highly recommend this professor if you plan or you are thinking about going to law school. He uses the Socratic method for all of his lectures, so make sure you're prepared for the reading when being called on. It's nerve-wracking in the beginning, but if you read the material and write down good notes you should be okay.
Abbott is the man, the myth, the legend, take him for Consitutional Law if you can! Be ready to read a lot throughout the week, so do not slack off because this is a pre law class that prepares you to go to law school. You are graded on 3 cold calls, a group project, and a final exam based on hypotheticals.
Great Professor. Inquistives have nothing to do with tests. ANYTHING he says in the lecture is fair game for being on tests. Pretty straight forward teaching wise.
V good. .
If you are a pre-law student at UH, Abbott is prof to take. He does the Socratic method for all his law classes to prep for law school and it's super helpful to gauge if law school is for you. I also enjoy yapping, which is highly encouraged by the 3 participation grades. There is a lot of reading, but it is all interesting stuff!
Prof. Abbott is very knowledgeable and cares for his students by incorporating real life examples such as things he experiences to world news to his lectures that keep you engaged. This is great since he mainly relies on what he says on lectures for tests (2 and one cumulative final) so TAKE GOOD NOTES! Overall, very respected professor! Do Take!
Professor Abbott is a straightforward professor, his exams are pretty straightforward as his lectures are. He mentions in lecture what's going to be on the test and actually provides a review, and he says that not all content o reviews is on the test, but i've seen otherwise. It's not hard to pass, definitely the professor to take.
I actually had Abbott for both GOVT 2305 and 2306. Great professor. His class isn't hard at all. It's pretty straightforward. Just study and do the work. Definitely would recommend this guy every time.
A professor you want in your corner if you're going into the legal field. Read the cases, be ready for cold calls, work on your outline, and you'll be fine. He's generous with attendance, in my opinion. You get 3 free absences. After that, you need an excuse. The final, at least for crim, was scary, but don't be intimidated and trust your knowledge
I took Professor Abbott's GOVT 2305 course during the summer session and had a positive experience overall. His teaching style is lecture based, and the recorded videos are clear, organized, and very helpful for understanding the material. He focuses on the content that actually shows up on the exams, which makes studying more efficient.
Criminal law with Abbott was such an interesting class. If you are interested in going to law school, take him, as he teaches his classes in socratic method. Overall, a lot of reading, participation matters since he cold calls on you, group project, and a final exam filled with hypotheticals. He is a legend!
Make sure you look at all review materials for test
If you are planning on going to law school, take him! It does not matter how hard his class can be, it will literally prepare you. Either way it is my first time taking his class and on my first cold call I got a 48/50 even though i felt as i was not prepared at all.
Doesn't acknowledge ppl raising their hands in class, was my biggest pet peeve. His exams also have a lot of trick questions or poorly worded questions. Easy enough as a class, so long as you go and take notes. Very knowledgeable on subject matter, but the first two sentences are reasons why he received a low score from me.
Amazing prof, but don't take him if you don't like studying or listening to lectures, because you will need to do both in order to get a good grade in the course. Lectures are super nice though. His exams are extremely easy if you go to class, pay attention, and study consistently. He explains stuff really nicely, too. Take him!
Took this Professor for Constitutional Law (LST 3357) and maintained an A. The course uses Socratic method and has 3 cold calls, 1 outline, and 1 final. Participation is a mandatory for your 3 cold calls, as they will be around 40% of your grade. The casebook is heavy reading, so I do not recommend taking two of his courses at once.
3 Participation Grades,Group Outline, and Final Exam. Abbott calls on 5 students every day to participate in a socratic seminar style discussion over the Casebook, If you keep up with the reading you WILL BE OKAY, You CAN DECLINE to participate for a small penalty, Abbott leads the discussion and doesn't "Grill" you if you are stumped on a question
Online Textbook is Mix of a traditional textbook(terms and definitions) and a casebook, HIGHLY RECOMMEND TAKE COURSE if interested at all in Law, Reading is light and serves as a great introduction to Briefing Cases.
Professor Abbott was an awesome professor and this course is was a bit for myself to understand, there were three exams it was okay. Also, the professor does proivdes extra credit with the group participation daily throughout the semester. Overall, this was an awesome course. (Note this course was taken in Fall 2024)
AMAZING professor! He seriously cares about you succeeding, both in and out of class. He keeps his students informed on all pre-law events, which sometimes double as extra credit opportunities. His cold-calling method keeps you on your toes, so make sure you read. Readings are heavy but manageable. If you are interested in law school, TAKE HIM!
This Professor Said in the Syllabus he doesn't do curves (that was a lie cause he gave a curve for all 3 exams we had to take lol) 3 total exams you have to take lectures are fair game followed by some InQuizitive assignments overall not a hard class and not assignment heavy (the only reason i even got a C+ was cause i was unpreapred for exam 1)
He gives good curves just do your homework and youll be fine.
An amazing professor to take if you're interested in law. Prepares you for law school by simulating that kind of course. It's a lot of reading, and the final is intense, but it's worth it. I took him three times and made an A each time. He's a good prof to have in your corner, and he picks students for the public law internship.
Abbott is a caring professor who aims to prepare his law students for law school using the Socratic Method, as well as a textbook, which will help you in the group outline and final exam. He offers great feedback on assignments, extra credit, and advice on law school. Abbott is looking for effort in participation and assignments to pass the class.
The man, the myth, the legend. Take Civil Liberties with Abbott if you can, he's the best! His grading criteria is 3 cold class, group project, and final exam. Get ready to read SCOTUS cases and discuss them, so do not slack off. It will be difficult at first, but it will pay off. If you are interested in law school, take him.
Lockdown browser for tests are my only nitpicky comment but it is immediately countered by his nice and friendly personality
