He consistently provides an intersting and thought provoking lecture.
His teaching style is hard to follow but Exams come right out of the book.
He's a good guy, but has rather difficult tests
he is very knowledgable of anthropology, go to the review sessions and get an a.
The class is very interesting once you get used to his teaching style
awesome class; great professor
His syllabus is VERY unclear, and way too long...I don't understand him
He is an interesting professor who knows his stuff, fair tests
GO TO Review sessions with the TA or you will fail
great guy and teacher, must go to review sessions, lecture can be boring
One of the Best
interesting, but hard to take notes. go to review sessions and you'll be fine.
A little intimidating at first, but very funny and knowledgable.
Very interesting lectures. Great to listen too, but hard to take notes to.
Rambles/Off on tangents. Does not connect ideas to questions on Exams.
nice guy with good stories, tests are pure memorization, have to go to class
Talks in circles, but tells you what is on the exams some what. Not a good prof
this guy is a real piece of work, lectures are boring, it gets pretty ugly
People who complain simply don't listen to him. Take notes and I guarentee an A
monotone and extremely dry humor
Take notes and go to the study session. He curves a little bit too
weird guy! great advisor (anth majors), lectures don't make sense, stay awake
RUN AWAY!!!!!!! do NOT take this course...you have been warned
Passionate about the material, very very interesting, one of my favorite classes
Excellent class. Learned more from this class than in my entire college career.
really interesting to listen to, great stories, great review sessions
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE!!!! WORST CLASS EVER AND ACKERMAN SUCKS!!!
This class is the worst ever!
Class makes you think, worth taking except for tests, you need to study
Interesting teacher, Class not very structured, Must go to class
Worst class/professor I have ever had. Makes no sense.
crazy but in a good way, interesting material, makes you think
very passionate man-if you like to LEARN, take the class.
As awesome as this class was, it was HARD. glad i took it though
hard, best class I've taken so far
WOW!! this guy talks in circles and is absolutely bonkers!!! avoid!!!
terrible class, very hard and poorly structured, i learned literally nothing
not the worst, but close, try something else, talks in riddles
Crazy man.Lectures are painstaking and he doesnt really teach muh of anything.
This man is incredibly smart. If you don't like his lectures, you're just too stupid. TAKE THIS CLASS!!
Taken for various courses. He makes you think--imagine that! Expanding your mind! Yes, he speaks in riddles, but it's the figuring-out part that's fun :) Probably one of the best teachers I've ever had.
BORING ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
going over exams is the only time hell actually TELL you anything. he then ****es and moans because no one has a clue. he'll make you wish you were dead, no joke.
Very hard class, incredibly intelligent professor who might be a bit crazy. NO wait, he is crazy. Looking back it was a great class but I remember being very confused. If you pay attention and read you will learn a lot. LOVES bonobos.
Very Very very cool guy, he is interesting and intelligent!! quarky, but nice!
really really interesting class. ackerman is a really smart guy who knows his stuff. classes are interesting, so it wasn't a problem to go to lecture - which was necessary to pass the exams. he works hard to make you think about life in general.
Extremely ambigious. I can honestly say this was the worst I class I ever took at the university. He is an old man with many problems. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU'RE LOOKING FOR AN EASY GROUP A REQUIREMENT, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
the man is way out there. he never made sense & is very strange - took it for group A what a mistake. ask around for copies of old tests - i didnt & got a C.
I was a student there from '86 to '91 - took nearly every class he had. He is an incredibly intelligent and insightful man. He helped shape my way of viewing the world and turned me on to many great books and authors. No easy grade here but a good lessson
Ackerman has not patience for fools and slackers. Do not take his courses for an easy grade. However, if you like Anthropology take them all! Key to good grades: think, read thoroughly, argue your points concisely, write clearly (no filler). :)
Horrible class with an equally horrible teacher. I was never so lost in a class before. The syllabus was even confusing! Do NOT take for an easy group A!!
Horrible, horrible professor.horrible handwriting, makes up words, and contradicts himself constantly!!
incredibly smart man.will make you work in order to understand the world OUTSIDE of the stupid mold we've been forcefed.if you think he makes up words, it's because you're too ignorant to know them.a wonderful man, advisor, and teacher.
If you like napping in class this ones for you!@ His syllabus is 31 pages! Whatever you do dont take this as a fun class. So much reading! I didnt know what was important until i took the exam. He really does make up words.
I think this professor writes his own evaluations ratings
this teacher is a smart man. he is not too interesting, but he does make some good points and is funny. i got a C on the 1rst exam, but after knew what i needed. you need everything on the board!!!! and all the readings!!!!
You have to get on this guys good side, but if you do, you'll be golden. Ask for help and write a good first paper and you'll get an A.
Class was awesome, I learned so much. Take notes, do the readings, study, and you can get 100%+ on the exams. If you like thinking, this class is for you. If not, why are you in college?
this man is the single most boring person i have ever met. i hope you have games on your phone or you wont stay awake. he thinks he's omniscient. uses big words when he doesnt have to to make you think he's smart. only talks about monkeys, its ridiculous!
just don't fall asleep in class and actually listen- this class is very interesting and you will absolutely be enlightened. there isn't a lot of reading, i dont know what everyone else is talking about- but i do agree that it is a hard class to study for.
Great prof, great class to take if you want to figure out if anthropology is for you. His tests are not that hard if you actually listen in class and read all the readings. If he writes something on the board, MEMORIZE it. got an A
you must talk to him if you want to do well. he is incredible, but this is not a class for people who don't love anthro. write down stuff from blackboard!!!
Most enlightening class I've ever taken. So nice and so cute. Have to study to get a good grade.
really awesome guy and has a great sense of humor. you can really learn a lot from him, but your mind does wander sometimes when he goes off on tangents.
You have to go to class, but if you do its interesting and makes you think.
the worst class ever! didn't learn a damn thing from it. ackerman is the sweetest guy in the world, but he talks in circles. and i have no idea what he was talking about...monkeys,baca...la la la. really not a good class to take, especially if you are trying to fullfill a group A.
He's a little awkward, but overall he's a nice guy who loves what he's teaching, very hard to find nowadays. Tests are long, but fair..go to class, write down everything he writes down, listen to his lectures, and do the readings, and you'll blow right through the tests.Makes you think, but worth it
monkeys, monkeys, and more monkeys. nice guy that loves what he does, just absolutely boring and nearly impossible to stay awake. NOT an easy group A! matching, fill in the blank, and mc exams not too bad just a lot to memorize.
A fantastic professor, that really makes you think about just where we developed as the human race, and why we think and act the way we do. Funny, nice guy, tests are a bit hard though. Go to study groups, TA was extremly hot.
Very strange, funny. Difficult to follow lectures sometimes because he rambles, but if you copy what he writes on the board and do all the readings the tests are easy. Lots of reading, but it's all very interesting and worth reading!
Compares Charles Manson to Jesus Christ really random professor - appears to be an unbeliever. Christians beware...claims he would have the mark of the beast if the second coming were to happen today. Undermines his own arguments by bashing other religions (native american, christian, muslim etc.).
He has never directly "bashed" religions, but he is obviously atheist (although he's never actually said it). I wouldn't recommend this class if you are very religious and would rather not learn of anything that might contradict something you believe.
maybe the best class i have taken at ud. but, you must be willing to come to class and work! highly recommend.
This class will completely change the way you think about the world.
i dont recommend this class! the prof is boring and makes no sense, expects you to understand everything he does, lots of reading and its tough material, not an easy A requirement!
You have to be willing to work in order to pass a class from Dr. Ackerman
was my mentor when I started as an Anthro major...very caring and personable, just a little difficult to get close to
very passionate about teaching. Knows na lot of info. Very helpful
best course offered at UD. amazing professor.
A wonderful, intelligent man. Best advisor I've ever had. His "Human Nature" course is absolutely wonderful and his insights will surely open your mind. Don't let his stubborn, pugnacious demeanour get to you, he's just a sheep in wolf's clothing. Not a difficult marker, but expects a certain level of, not necessarily intelligence, but effort from his students. If you're just lazy, you won't do well.
Best Class EVER. Turned me on to Ernest Becker.
Really cool guy, great sense of humor! He opens your eyes to things you never even thought about, trust me! U read a couple of books, but they are easy, interesting reads. Tests are mostly from lecture notes. You won't be bored. I came in this class with no interest and left with new beliefs about life and evolution. Great guy, great course!
One of my fav.profs! Only take him if you want to be educated. Changed my beliefs on many things and forces you to think. You need to be open minded to enjoy his course. There are many readings but 90% of them are very interesting. The course is a bit difficult for a 200level. This is what I thought college courses would be like. Lifelessons galore
this class sucked. despite what everybody else says, he makes you feel stupid for having your own opinions. if the lectures didnt put you to sleep, the readings sure will. the only people who like this class are anthro and phil. majors. i no longer believe in a divine creator (not because of his views on evolution, but b/c such a person exists)
Worst class ever! His 32 page long syllabus is impossible to decipher, the readings are boring and he could not be more vague in class. Unless you are majoring in Anthro or Philosophy, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
waste of time - stay away
he just rambles for the entire period. not structured at all. the information is interesting if you want it to be, but he is just all over the place and repeats himself. he wants word for word replication on tests, which are impossible. take him if you have to otherwise id suggest skipp weekly hell.
save yourself and don't take this...the monkey theory is way too overdone
i liked this class, it was interesting even though he's a little insane. i got an A just by reading everything and going to class
If you are thinking about taking this class for a group A, think again. The professor is OLD, unorganized, arrogant, unclear, repeats himself time and time again, and just likes to hear himself ramble. Exams are confusing and difficult. There has to be a group A that's less painful than this class, and I suggest you find it.
This class is difficult! Very unstructured lecture and the tests are difficult! Go to the study sessions and memorize basic terms because they are word for word on the fill in the blank portion of the tests!
I've taken two classes with him and I absolutely love him. They're not necessarily easy, but theyre so thought provoking and he's incredibly smart without being pretentious, and he's ****ing funny. Human Nature was a class I think about all the time, the content was excellent, but I wouldnt recommend it unless youre interested in Anthropology.
So the class was hard. But how many 200 level classes are for sleeping? It is an interesting class, very thought provoking. If you go to class and listen you will at least be entertained. I mean, the dude eats chalk!
A tough, thought-provoking class. However, the guy is hilarious. He's my friend's advisor; while waiting for her first appointment, he came by and said "Waiting for Ackerman? He's a jerk. I might as well help you instead." She fell for it for like 10 minutes! Anyway, take the course if you like to think. Memorize definitions! And good luck.
Easily the worst professor I've had here at Delaware. this man is unorganized and has some completely ridiculous notions. He rambles constantly and very rarely actually teaches the subject. Usually for the first half of class he'll talk about whatever he wants (american indians, food pyramids, you name it) and teach the second half. DO NOT TAKE HIM
He definitely is a VERY interesting man. He's entertaining and pretty out there when it comes to a lot of things. His lectures are a bit unorganized but if you truely want to learn something about yourself or want to learn how to think in a completely different way TAKE HIM! He reminds me of an old punk rocker against all ways of society.
i really liked him. makes u think if u actually listen to him. read the material he gives, it makes his lectures make sense. the main reason i passed this class was because of the amazing review sessions held by Margaret
one of the best professors i have ever had. if you want to get a good grade you have to work and do the readings. ackerman is so smart and funny. his lectures are really interesting in you actually listen. he is an awesome guy. listen to the lectures and do the readings to get good grades. i loved the professor and the class
Ackerman is a funny guy, but he rambles a lot and doesn't give many notes. You have to do a lot of reading and pay attention if you want to do well. The tests are difficult, but he curves them. As long as you put in some effort, you should get a B, but the class is very frustrating at times. He's a smart guy but doesn't always make a lot of sense!
I loved this class! The readings were interesting and the exams were difficult, but very do-able and curved generously.
dropped the class after the first test. very hard to take notes because he goes back and forth between subjects and lectures the whole time without visuals. If you are looking for an easy A this isnt the class for you.
This class is really painful. I wouldn't reccommend this class to any of my friends. He rambles and it's impossible to take notes. I stopped going.
I was very confused and did not do well on the first two tests, but once you get the big picture of the concepts of the course, it's a little easier to understand. Class is all lecture, and can be confusing
I found this man extremely amusing. He always looks like he's up to no good. His lectures usually made me really think which made the class interesting for me. Took him during winter, twice a week 4 hours. He usually kept my attention for the majority of class. Take notes on everything he says, read the books and you'll do fine and he curves too
His class was a game changer. 30 years later and I remember it like it was yesterday. The content was challenging, the tests near impossible (for a freshman) and the lectures ranged from uproarious to mind numbing. But I've never learned material any more relevant nor meaningful. Dr. Ackerman delivered the essentials of the human condition.
