Brother Alford is a fantastic 261 teacher. The way he sets up the class is conducive to learning. I appreciate that he recognizes student's abilities and the gives them the means (study guides) by which to gain knowledge on their own.
One of the best religion professors I've ever had! He really pulls together everything you need to know about Family History in this small course. I have retained so much of this information and it's strengthened my testimony and knowledge.
Hardest religion class I've ever taken. He's a nice guy, and you learn, but his tests are absurd. In order to get an A you have to memorize a plethora of useless minutia. Definitely not a 2 credit class if you take it from Alford. Good if you like memorizing useless factoids.
Brother Alford is an excellent and caring teacher. You can ignore the previous rating.
My favorite Religion teacher. His class is very straightforward. He teaches exactly what he wants you to know and gives you the study guides and flash cards to learn it. Also very fun and caring.
Prof. Alford is such a nice guy, and he really knows A LOT about family history, but I thought the tests were somewhat ridiculous for a 2 credit class...some really hard questions.
The class lectures and assignments are very easy but the test are RIDICULOUS! You have to memories a whole bunch of useless facts that you will never use again. The tests are long and the questions are very specific. He gives you study guides but they don't cover everything on the test. If you take it from someone else you won't regret it!
Brother Alford is a really nice guy, and caring professor, but the class was a lot of busy work for being only 2 credits. There were a lot of extra readings which we weren't even tested on and didn't discuss in class. The test questions were very specific and not what I expected.
Tough class! It is all about memorizing crazy details! Class can sometimes be interesting, but tests are absolutely rediculous! I recieved my worst grade in this class last semester. He is such a kind man though and he really tries. He cares about family history and wants people to learn.
rediculously difficult and beyond 2 credits by far. Take him if you already consider yourself a scholar or want to be one. The person who insulted us as slackers needs to be deleted... studying for hours will barely pass you on his tests... ON A GOOD DAY! If you want an A, don't do what he says, you must do at least 50% more.
A good class and I learned a lot. You will need to study but his tests are fair. He's easy to talk to and gives you study guides and other things to help you learn the D&C. I liked it.
A good class and I learned a lot. You will need to study but his tests are OK. He?s easy to talk to and gives you lots of help like study guides and games and the amount of reading is reasonable. I liked his class.
Brother Alford is an amazing teacher. He truly cares about all his students and wants you to learn. He gives you all the study guides way in advance. I learned so much and always loved coming to class. Yes, you do need to study to do well on his tests, but its really not that hard... Just keep up with your reading and you will do just fine.
Bro. Alford is great! Do the reading and you do well. He provides you with 95 percent of testable material in his lectures. Memorize section "titles" and you are set for tests and quizzes. Make a good mnemonic.
Brother Alford loves the doctrines of the Church and teaches in such a way to help you love it as well. He has a great way of teaching. Read the scriptures, review well for the tests, memorize the section headings, and you'll really love this class. I felt rejuvenated each time I went to class.
Brother Alford is a great teacher. He is very direct, and tells you exactly what you need to do to get a good grade. He posts all his material on blackboard, which is very helpful. He has weekly quizzes which ask if you have read. He knows everything about church history! I VERY much recommend him. I'm definitely taking 325 from him next semester.
Best teacher I've had at BYU. He really cared about the students and always spent the first few minutes talking to us. He brought his wife to class and she was really sweet too. He hasn't been teaching D&C long, but it's not like it's something you get a PhD in, so it doesn't matter. Take his class. You won't regret it.
Awesome Teacher. He tell you exactly what you need to do to get the grade you want. It is not hard to get an A you just have to do the reading, go to class and study for the tests. He tells you what to study. Take him if you can!
Br. Alford is a wonderful teacher. I loved the way that he brought the spirit into class. He posts the slides- so review them (he even tells you which slides are testable)- and you will do great. Go to his office and he will treat you like a good friend. Not easy, but if anything is worth investing time into its Religion! My husband and I liked it!
He dives a tone of hand outs.. I hated it, but it was a great class
Definitely overrated. OK teacher, but not that good. Somewhat interesting, but not the easiest class. I would definitely not recommend him, there are way better religion teachers that him at BYU
There's a great spirit in class and I learned something new every time I went. I didn't like the scripture journals at first but I'm glad I did them. I enjoyed this class.
I really enjoyed class with Brother Alford. His was very transparent and straightforward in grading---there were never surprises. More than anything, I felt the Spirit every class period. His class helped me grow spiritually. I definitely recommend it!
Excellent professor who truly cares about the subject. He is very friendly and helpful. My only complaint is that the class was harder than most other 2 credit religion classes.
Nice guy, straight-forward class, but I'd never take a class from him again. Half of what was discussed in lecture wasn't useful, just things he thought were cool. I felt uncomfortable and unwelcome. With any question, I felt dumb or "less than". He kind of has a self-righteous attitude and acts ignorant to avoid being gracious or understanding.
My favorite part of this class is that the Spirit's always there. He doesn't teach to an exam, but he models the exam after what he teaches. Do the study guide for each test (there are 3, including the final), do the gospel scholarship assignment EARLY and follow the directions exactly, and memorize the section titles. Favorite religion professor!
Great class, I always felt the spirit. Assignments and tests were fine. I learned a lot of things about the scriptures and myself.
Brother Alford is an exceptional teacher. His D&C class was probably the best religion class I've taken at BYU. I liked how the class was set up with all the different assignments and such. I would definitely take another class from him.
This is a great, well-organized course. I learned so much! Professor Alford knows his stuff and made the material interesting.
Brother Alford does a brilliant job mixing church history and personal application. I would definitely take another class from him.
I absolutely loved this class! Incredible professor. I think I'll remember what I learned in this course better than any other religion class I have taken so far at BYU.
Bro. Alford is always very clear. He has weekly quizzes and weekly journal entries. They're really quick and easy. If you come to class and take notes it will help. He posts the slides online and even marks "not testable" on the ones he doesn't use. Really enjoyed both time I took from him.
Super nice guy, but his tests are terrible. Prepare to put way more effort into a class that should not be this difficult.
I loved taking Doctrine and Covenants from Brother Alford. He is incredibly clear and organized. Students will know exactly what is expected of them and how to succeed. You do have to study and you need to read, but totally possible to get an A.
Dr. Alford is amazing! His lectures are very spiritual, and I would take another religion class with him. He has a reading quiz once a week, so reading is a must. The tests are challenging if you don't come to class, so attendance is important. It's by no means an easy A class, but you get a lot out of it, so it's worth it.
Fantastic course. One of my favorite religion teachers. Really glad I took this class. Brother Alford is a great teacher.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS FROM PROFESSOR ALFORD. I was always frustrated in class because he went over one or two slides from the lecture, then would ramble on about something pointless for 40 min, then expect us to look up the slides and figure out what we were supposed to learn. Tests were hard. Look for another professor if you take this class.
Bro. Alford is an amazing teacher. I learned so much in this class and it was very interesting. His exams are hard, but it s worth it to take the class. He is willing to help you.
Beside the long essay you have to read and write it's a great class
Brother Alford is an incredible teacher. His tests are not difficult and he tells you exactly what is going to be on them. He offers an easy extra credit option and has weekly in class quizzes that are not hard either. One very easy writing assignment that he gives you like a month to do. Great guy & teacher. Take his class! You wont regret it!
I loved the class, the lectures were both spiritually and intellectually engaging. He wants to give you easy points! His homework assignments are small, and consistent, so you have to do the reading. He gives credit for easy things all the time. His tests are challenging, but if you are on top of your reading, and do the study guides, easy class.
He gives a fair, well balanced amount of reading. Only a few projects, which all in all take only three or four hours total over the course of the class. Gives quizzes every class period, though.
Bro Alford really wants you to succeed and he gives EVERY possible opportunity for you to do well in his class. His expectations are very clear and I was surprised how much I really got out of the class. He's excited to share his knowledge (vast and full of experience!) with you and he just wants you to have a testimony of the gospel like he does.
Brother Alford is an all around stud. He is so fair with his grading and actually understands you have a life and this is not your only class. With that being said, he does expect you to do the reading and the projects. If you just do the assignments and study a fair amount (2 hours) for the tests, you'll be fine. He just wants you to be better!
Bro. Alford is a great teacher and really cares and goes out of his way to help all of his students. No matter what! He is amazing and I recommend him as a teacher. If you are allergic to hard tests that you must study hours to get a good grade on, then I recommend an easier teacher. The tests focus entirely on knowledge not spirituality. Hard!
Bro. Alford is a great teacher and I have found his lectures more interesting than any other religion professor I have had. That being said, the tests are deceitful. This is exactly what is wrong with religion classes at BYU. He is a great teacher but he needs to keep a curve too. There are much easier routes to fulfill religion credit. Take them.
I love this class, and Prof. Alford is a great teacher, but there is SO MUCH READING. I love to read and I was still drowning in his reading assignments. This class was half in class and half online-TAKE FULLY IN CLASS IF YOU CAN. But still take it from Prof. Alford! He is an amazing teacher who really cares about his students and knows his stuff!
Professor Alford was a great Professor, super kind and aware of the stress and problems in his students lives. Not homework heavy and passionate about what he does, super loving man. Would definitely take again!
The class started off ok - but by the end of the semester you can tell that the Professor Alford isn't too worried about the student having the best experience despite what he may say in class. Grading has a pretty strict format and is more about you hitting the technical requirements (word length, exact format, etc...) than quality content. 3/10
This was a blended class (meaning you do the online work and then go to class once each week). It's a great way to take a religion class! I really liked it.
Great class. Youll like brother Alford. Excellent story teller. Good semester project, you get to choose what to do. You do online readings and quizzes and then meet just once a week for class.
I took this class blended, meaning all the coursework was online and we met once a week with Prof Alford to discuss.I loved it! Best of both worlds. All the course material was available 24/7 online, and the class periods didn't have testable material. That way, Prof Alford could go off on amazing spiritual tangents without hurting our test scores!
A really good class. I liked the blended format, doing class work online and attending class once a week to get questions answers and having good discussions. I liked being able to choose my own restoration project. Tests are straightforward. The quizzes are all open book.
Brother Alford is an amazing professor. REL C 225 was fantastic, I learned so much that I didn't know before about the history of the church. This is primarily an online course, so you do read most of the material on your own, but he gives you the estimated time the material should take for planning purposes. The semester project was super fun too!
I took this blended and the class periods were a waste of time but you need to go to get attendance points. BUT the online readings and questions were super easy.. 2 tests are literally the reading questions so study those! but super easy class I studied one day before the final and crammed and got an A. restoration project but thats for every clas
I loved Professor Alford! He has a real passion for the gospel and is so knowledgeable about church history. Classes are much more discussion based than other religion classes Ive taken. Theres one midterm and a final, but he really sets you up to succeed and gives a detailed study guide. Lots of assignments, but its doable. Offers extra credit
Professor Alford is my favorite religion professor ever. He is such a happy, nice guy who loves the gospel and loves what he teaches. He did not grade my assignments, the TAs did, but they were easy graders and the tests matched the study guide. I learned a lot in this class and the material was not difficult or time consuming.
He outlines the expectations for the class very clearly and consistently reminds you of them. Very organized and good at having assignments force participation. That being said, when I expressed unusual views on some religious topics he came down hard with an email to the entire class saying those views were wrong.
He'll tell you to watch his videos at normal speed - just watch them double and save yourself the time, it obviously didn't affect my grade. Is a great professor though! Very passionate about teaching and helping people learn Church History.
Brother Alford is one of the best guys I know. He has a very good heart. Brother Alford is a typical sweet elderly man. His wife made cookies for all of his classes. My class was blended so a lot of the learning depended on me. Religion classes in general are pretty tricky at BYU. There are a lot of random facts to remember.
Professor Alford was incredible. He is super nice and knows what he is teaching. Lectures are easy to listen to and not very long. The online class was very well structured and super easy to find everything. Tests are easy as long as you study. Extra credit is offered all semester long. If you have problems, email him, he answers anything
Pro. Alford is a great choice! He is very caring and he is a very interesting person! This class requires A LOT of reading, but his lectures are very inspirational, and I learned a lot. Tests are not bad, he provides a study guide with everything you need to know, so just study those well and you will do great!
typically online class. Way to much reading, there would be 10 hours a week of just reading assignments. Doesnt let you watch recordings at speed greater than 1.25. Waste of a class. If you want an easy a do not take from him.
Brother Alford was very clear in his grading rubrics. His lectures were also very spiritual and I was actually able to learn a lot in his class!
I really loved the organization in this class. I took it as a blended course so we met once a week for 50 minutes and the rest was just online with Canvas. Helped with an accommodating schedule!
Brother Alford's Foundations of the Restoration was pretty chill. I took it as an online class and it wasn't too demanding. He also offers 20 points of extra credit, which is pretty easy to earn.
I loved Professor Alford. Best religion teacher out there. Gives the right amount of work for a religion class and all the tests and finals are just the study guide pretty much, little variation. Great class. Would take again 10/10.
Brother Alford assigns an excessive amount of reading. I admire his knowledge and testimony of the Restoration though. He makes class interesting, but the homework assignments make it way more than just a 2 credit class.
I love professor Alford. I was so scared to take this class but I’m so glad I took it from him. He is an excellent and brilliant teacher. Manages the blended class like a pro even though he is older.
Brother Alford is the sweetest and most loving professor. The blended version of his class is really awesome. You only go once a week, and the rest of the assignments are online. The modules take a bit of time, but you have the entire week to finish them. If you are looking for an easy, interesting religion, take this one!
He's the sweetest professor and I loved the class! There's more work to do than most religion classes, but none of it's difficult.
He is a very nice guy who has a great heart. That being said, he is way too test-heavy and his tests are unreasonably difficult. I got an A, but barely. I cannot recommend him in good conscience. These brutal religion teachers are why students dislike the required religion hours. It shouldn't be this difficult. GPA's should not fall to this.
he is a nice guy, but I did not have the same experience than a lot of these reviews. I found him very demeaning towards students when they would ask questions or say something and I thought there was way more busy work than there needed to be. I don't see reason for religion classes to be difficult and I felt his was too much work. would not rec
I loved that the class was really flexible with my schedule! The class honestly isn't hard, you just have to try and make sure you do everything on time! Really, pretty chill.
Brother Alford is incredibly clear about what he expects/wants from you in the course. It's great because there's no ambiguity!! His blended course is also super flexible and he shared some really interesting stories in class.
Professor Alford is such a tender man and really cares about his students and their understanding of the course. I think this course is a little too much work for only a 2 credit class, everyone that see's how much work I have think the same. Tricky midterm and final, but if you study WELL you will do great. Convenient to have the course online.
Don't take this class as a blended section. There is a lot of reading and videos to watch. Dr. Alford is a stickler for little things and his TA's are too. For example, i got docked points because I didn't number my points in an assignment. Really mid tier lectures and assignments. Nice guy but I will not be taking his class ever again.
Professor Alford is SUCH a good professor. You can tell he really cares about his class and wants his students to succeed. He is enthusiastic about the material and loves his students. He teaches with an intent to answer difficult questions and doesn't shy away from the hard things. He is so service oriented and a great professor! Take his class!
100% my favorite religion professor at BYU. He was so incredibly kind and inspirational. He makes everything super clear and organized when it comes to class assignments/exams. Told great stories to connect concepts. Would take again in a heartbeat.
As a person, he is amazing and SO energetic and caring. I didn't love his lectures. VERY clear grading and assignments. Online modules took a decent amount of time but weren't very difficult. TESTS: Lots of memorization, but it's very clear what you have to memorize.
Honestly would highly reccommend taking the blended online version. Only once a week and the online portion is super easy. I had to get a 70% on the final to get an A. The tests you actually have to study a bunch for. If you want an easy class this is great, and you still can gain a TON of cool info about the church.
The class in itself is ok, but an INSANE amount of work for a blended religion class. Do yourself a favor and take it from a different professor. Exams are in the BYU Online testing center (I didn't even know that was a thing before this class). TA's are tough graders and not willing to give points back on assignments.
Take any class you can from Professor Alford!!! They aren't super easy, but totally worth it. Most well-organized course I've had! The tests are pretty tough, but I didn't really mind because I got so much out of the class. He is the most wonderful person.
Professor Alford is excellent. He responded to all questions in a highly professional manner, and it was very obvious that he took his job and relationships with students very seriously. It was easy to approach him and he often has conversations with us before class begins. LOTS of online HW so be prepared for that, but it's all methodical.
This is an outstanding class! Prof Alford is excellent. The class is very organized and easy to follow. Study guides clearly outline what will be on the exams. I would definitely recommend this class.
Great class. Super organized and easy to follow. Answered ALOT of my church history questions. Everything is open book except one midterm and the final. Teacher is fantastic and engaging. I absolutely loved the classroom discussions and the blended layout.
Loved this class and the teacher! Very straightforward. Everything but two tests was open book! Learned a lot.
Professor Alford is literally one of the sweetest people I've ever met! He sincerely cares about his students and is willing to work with them. I took the blended class and it is VERY well organized. Each week you do some readings and complete a quick homework assignment. After the first week or so, it is very easy to get into the routine.
This was one of the best classes I have taken at BYU. I am not a big fan of religion classes and approached this one reluctantly, but I was soon transformed because of Professor Alford's lectures. You can tell how much he cares about his students. If you want to feel the spirit, take this class. If you want to learn something take this class!
I took the blended option, which only met in person once a week. Professor Alford went out of his way to care for his students - adjusting lessons to focus on students' questions. He is extremely knowledgeable about early church history and has a strong testimony. Assignments are straightforward and everything needed for tests is clearly given.
He is the sweetest man! He cares a lot about his students and his class. The blended option for this class is a piece of cake. We met once a week and had stuff to do online every week. If you stay on top of it you won't have any troubles at all. There's a project, but you pick the project yourself. Exams are easy; I would study with flashcards.
I took this course in the blended form which was the best for me and so easy. All of the content is open on canvas and you can get a little bit ahead in the class which was nice. We had one midterm and a final for this class and Dr. Alford gave us a study guide with the exact same questions beforehand. 10/10 recommend.
Very heavy on the reading for a 2 credit class but I loved the lectures! I really learned a lot and I'm glad I took this class. Learned quite a bit that I probably wouldn't have outside of this course.
Professor Alford is by far my favorite professor on campus. He has a lot of knowledge and enthusiasm when teaching the class. The exams are straight forward and the homework blends well with what's covered in class. I can't recommend this teacher enough, he is one of the best teachers on campus!
I took it blended! We met once a week which wasn't kept track of but he did give the attendance code so it was important to attend. He gave a study guide for the test which was nice. My only complaint was the 5-hour workload every week, the readings and writing assignments were pretty heavy for a 2 credit class. He curves tests though!
Professor Alford's REL225 class is a rewarding experience. The blended format makes it manageable, and his thoughtful lectures bring the material to life. Staying on top of the online work is key, but unstuckstudy can be a helpful study tool. Highly recommend this class for an insightful religious studies credit.
Great religion professor. Has a wonderful personality and great stories. The course material is straight forward and the exam is fair and based off his study guide. So glad I took this class.
DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASS FROM THIS GUY! He has been by far my least favorite professor at BYU. He gave a ridiculous amount of homework that felt like busy work. His midterm and final were super hard and pointless. I took his class because I felt like his rate my professor score was good, but wow his rating should be lower. He is awful.
Wonderful teacher. A student of the scriptures and has a passion to share. His online materials took me a decent amount of time, but it is blended and only has class one hour per week, so it was about as much as expected. I learned a lot and am grateful for Alford and his caring personality. Study guides given and tests are good if you study hard.
He was my favorite religion professor, I have learned so much from him and I would for sure take another class from him. He cares about his students, and he does have a good amount of readings but they do not feel like busy work, he is trying to actually help us learn.
Dr. Alford was an amazing professor! He is very passionate about what he teaches, and has personal anecdotes that have brought me to near tears. His analysis assignments can be difficult, especially if you find the week's subject material a little boring. I am saddened to have Dr. Alfords' class coming to an end.
It's not hard to get an A. The class is clearly organized, the test questions come from the study guide, and there are extra credit opportunities. Just do the reading and show up to class. His lectures are interesting and he is a super caring guy with a great personality. He truly loves his students. Would absolutely take again.
The hybrid version of this class is a lot of work and very technical. You are expected to really know the content and the test questions are extensive. The professor is good at what he does and will answer all your questions but the study guide is long and exhaustive. The online modules will take at least 2 hours each week.
Ken's a really great guy his lectures were really fun and engaging. If you are considering taking a class from him, I would highly recommend it.
Ken is a great teacher. He really cares about his class and his students. The class has a lot of reading and long assignments for a religion class, but it wasn't too bad and Ken was a really great teacher.
I was not a fan of how he set up his class. There was so much unnecessary busy work throughout the week and attendance was mandatory, but instead of going through the material most of the time he would use most of the class time to share stories that didn't have to do with anything. His tests are so hard for no reason. He's also super against AI.
Excellent professor and human being. Completely disagree with any negative reviews. Got B's on both midterm and final exam and walked out with a solid A in the class. Do all assignments and extra credit and review the study guide.
This is a content‑heavy class. You will need to read a lot and study a lot to remember the breadth of the material covered on exams. You are given everything you need to succeed. The professor is clear, organized, and genuinely invested in helping students learn.
This course was rigorous and time-consuming. At times it felt rewarding, but it was my least favorite class.
