Awesome lectures -- Publish a CD of them, it would go platinum.
Great lecturer
He is an amazing lecturer and entertainer!
he makes me happy i took this course
Rambles, gives minimal clarity to importance, intelligent speech
this guy rocks your socks
A pedestrian pedantic.
kick ass prof, hilarious
EXCELLENT lectures!!!! amazing.....
lots of bruny jokes, but great professor
Talks too fast but FUNNY guy!
Legendary! simply legendary
a wealth of knowledge
Pompous, very unhelpful, not very funny, silly mustache...
Probably THE best prof I've had ever!
Like getting taught by Groucho Marks! Very fast, but there's lots to cover.
One of UofT's favouite and most renowned profs and certainly deserves the title!
The best teacher I have ever had. Hot damn.
Talks to fast, marks to hard
He probably knows all the answers to Jeopardy
good speaker but goes off on many tangents
This course was great as a foundation for higher history courses.
Hillarious professor, knows every single thing about Europe ever to happen.
Funny prof.....the hurricane historian at his best!!!
Great sense of humour...but get ready for non-stop writing...
hard to follow, arrogant, not funny, too many obscure&irrelevant references.s.
Let's get one thing straight. Being funny/witty doesn't equal good prof
One of the best profs I've had, Entertaining, clever, Informative.
ABSOLUTELY DO NOT RECOMMAND THIS COURSE---TOO MUCH INFO TO STUDY THE EXAM FOR!!!
way too much to remember

You'll do well on exam if you know what to filter out from his lectures.
love the prof, love the course !
arrogant and full of air, yes, but awesome nonetheless
loved the course, one of the best profs i ever
Avoid him at all cost
Tries to hard to be funny, but clear and precise nontheless
Clever, informative, and knows his stuff...If you don't mind taking notes
he definitely has some major problems, not very funny, and gives too much info, but he sure is hot
Very intelligent...even funny, just learn to filter lectures!!
Really hard course with a lot of material, but great prof! Very funny, and informative - a class you will definitely learn something in if you make sure to attend :)
He's very witty and his lectures are entertaining, but the course has way too much info and he talks too fast. We call him the Hurricane Historian.
lectures are great...knows the material really well...talks fast...adds humour to the material...the class flies by
great prof. so funny. Knights were the bikers of the middle ages :)
He knows everything about Renaissance Rome! Doesn't care about exceeding word limits. Very entertaining and available for help
Hail to Bartlett and his enthusiasm to teach and talk about the Renaissance. It seems like the man knows EVERYTHING about the European history. His on-the-side-stories were very interesting as well.
Great Prof!!! His stories were exciting and fun! I continued on with history because of him!!
The course was tough - way too much material to cover in a year. The prof, however, was fantastic. His enthusiasm was much appreciated.
The course is too broad, but well worth the experience especially in light of Bartlett's humour.
he is one of the best teachers i have had ever. makes you want to go to class
Amazing teacher, a true inspiration
He is a true historian. His vast knowledge and love for history are evident. A pleasure to this prof more than once.

Delivers lectures clearly and concisely. Does a good job of injecting humour into history. Very eccentric.
EXCELLENT prof - entertaining and informative. Speaks very quickly and covers a massive amount of material, but don't worry - his tests and exams are EASY! Just understand the big picture. Also, choose a good TA. You mark depends on it.
Just a great lecturer. He knows everything about everything.
the nicest professor and person ive met so far
By far, the best course I took in first year. An inspiration in the sea of mediocrity that is the university.
Yes, very knowledgeable and competent, but his constant remarks about the "better quality of education" in his days are rather annoying
the best professor of first year by far
Amazing professor; nice, knowledgeable, enthusiastic, well-versed.
This is my 2nd course with him, and his jokes are recycled ones from previous courses. Although he, indeed, has a wealth of knowledge, his speedy lecutres are now indigestible, pretentious, and simply egotistical.
Talks fast, but very interesting. Very approachable, great, interesting lectures.
SLOW DOWN speed racer (you talk to fast!)...You're too smart for your own good...Please remember that you're talking to first year students and pace yourself...
Bartlett is extremely knowledgable and provides humourous examples to clarify the topics covered. Though he speaks fast, his lectures are interesting and easily understood. Overall, he's an amazing prof.
This man was born to lecture! Always completely fascinating. His enthusiasm and passion for the subject is always astounding and infectious. His wit and helpful insights always made things more interesting. I would love to take one of his classes again!
I used to go to the 2 hour evening lectures when I missed one of the afternoon lectures (1 hour each, mon and wed). I swear his lectures were exactly the same, word for word. Someone told me he's been using the same scripts, jokes et all for 20 years.
Pompous, but witty, intelligent man. Lectures funny, chock full of meaty stuff. Talks very quickly -- a hazard for inexperienced first-year note-takers. Keep Spielvogel at hand to flesh out what you miss.

great prof, funny and likable. made the work easy, even though my t.a. was a jerk. i'd take the course again in a minute.
Funny guy. Very speedy talker, but all interesting. Would recommend this course in a heartbeat.
He is okay, but the TA is really nice and helpful.
Wow! This is the kind of class I've always dreamed about. And apparently he's memorised every lecture word for word, and has been able to recite it almost verbatim year after year? That's wild.
Bartlett is awesome. Had him last year, too. Incredibly entertaining, hilarious, brilliant.
There's nothing not to like about professor Bartlett! He's hilarious, mellow, and very enthusiastic! A pure genius at heart!
Best teacher / prof i've ever had BY FAR... bar none... enough said! TAKE THIS CLASS! It's one hell of an experience!
Take a summer abroad program with him!
When people imagine what a great university experience can be, this is it. Prof. Barlett gives movie quality performances. This guy is REALLY FUNNY. Barlett could be the STAY IN SCHOOL poster prof for high school kids who are disenchanted or daunted by higher education. Take this course!
The Best teacher a school could ever hire.
One of the hardest working profs/scholars at UofT. Actually *prepares* for lectures (including jokes) and engages undergraduate students in discussions (but not at all patronizing!). Take his classes and go to his extra-curricular lectures and talks on campus! Great intro. to field of history.
Talks way too fast. Condescending to you. Basis your grade on one assignment. NOt effective at answering questions. JOkes aren't that funny either.
bartlett is great. seriously. clear, interesting, funny.
The class is a bit boring but Bartlett makes up for it. Very informative!
he's the bomb, makes any lecture interesting with his witty remarks
the prof i have ever dreamed of....PLEASE don't leave!!you're the best. love your jokes....they put a smile on my face!!!!!
I had the great pleasure of taking two courses with this wonderful instructor last year. His lectures as well as being fascinating also offer profound insights into European history and human nature. The only sad thing is that I've taken all the courses he teaches but for one 4th year course. This prof. is a superb Renaissance Man!
An amazingly kind and gracious professor who, though he lectures to hundreds manages to be very clear. He is concise and to the point. A superb teacher in the best sense.
Prof. Bartlett is probably one of the best professors at UofT. It was in first year that I first began studying topics taught by him. In fact, I got into the Renaissance because of him. I learned so much in the 4yrs that I studied with him. He is an incredible lecturer! I look forward to a trip to Italy guided and instructed by him!
Great prof. Very engaging. Gave interesting lectures. Seems very approchable. Great learning experience. Made learning the earlier historic periods fun!
He's the most amusing person I've ever met. I actually enjoyed going to his lectures. Its a shame he only taught the first half of the course, it really went downhill after that.
vERY FUNNY AND KNOWLEDGEABLE
sooo funny and his lectures are genuinely interesting....you can tell he really knows what hes talking about and it makes it more enjoyable to listen to. have i mentioned HILARIOUS?
Professor Bartlett is a very interesting, charismatic, and entertaining professor. His lectures are fantastic, and should be attended because he tends to just assign readings of primary sources to supplement what he lectures on, which is nice.
He's a really good professor!!!!

For the study abroad program, Bartlett was awful! He sucked the fun out of the experience, was arrogant & stuck up. Good things people say about him are true but there is an equal list about the evil side of him. He has did not coordinate well with students. He needs to spend more time teaching effectively rather than bragging about what he knows
He's overrated. Reading these reviews I was expecting much more. A funny man, but the jokes are recycled every year. He does talk too fast, but that's only because there's so much information. Lawrence was much better, he provided lecture outlines so we wouldn't get lost in all the info.
Prof Bartlett is the greatest! I love his enthusiam, and jokes! Although he is a fast lecturer (and it IS easy to get lost) they are very interesting and you get used to his style after awhile. It does help to have someone sitting beside you to clarify points with because it's really easy to get lost in the lecture. A good time, learn nonetheless!
This guy is absolutely hilarious! I would often have gaps in my notes where I was laughing so hard that I had to stop taking notes. Just picturing this guy rolling up to class on his bicycle wearing a suit and a bright red helmet makes me laugh. One word of caution, if he's still using the Spielvogel text, I would avoid buying it as it's useless
He turned dry material into amusing material. Unfortunately it wasn't enough to change how boring the course was. Way too much material, and it isn't distributed in a way that makes sense - why was an equal amount of time dedicated to the architecture of Venice buildings as was dedicated to The Renaissance itself? Go with a different HIS course.
always kept us laughing
Best prof i've ever had. He made the course fun and you didn't even really have to read the textbook as long as you paid attention in class. awesome teacher
Talked way too fast but overall, had a great presence and took delight in the material. Was fun to look at. Loved his suits.
The huge span covered in the course and his rapid-fire lecture style notwithstanding, Bartlett held my attention from start to finish every lecture through the year. His humour and obvious love for his subject material were infectious.
Takes otherwise boring material and makes it very fun and interesting! Cracks funny jokes and seems to love discussing things after class. Awesome prof!
Awesome prof! he is hilarious. though he does talk very quickly, he takes a HECK of a lot of info and condenses it as much as possible. Would definitely recommend anyone to take his class. Lots of stuff to remember, but if you really like history, you may as well know it all!
He's like a robot. He gets up and rants off his lecture and leaves immediately. His assignments come with 6 pages of instructions for a 900 word essay. Not my favourite professor. His work seems like a chore to him
He's well known for being a great prof which is why I was so excited to take this course... but maybe he's been teaching for too long, because as someone else commented, his lectures feel way too "robotic" for my liking. That and he picks the most obscure things for term tests. Seems friendly though.
Bartlett himself is great by HIS109 covers an overwhelming amount of material. He manages to get through it by talking incredibly fast for an hour without seeming to take a breath. Despite this, his lectures aren't difficult to follow and are often interspersed with jokes and silly examples.
Best Professor EVER! So interesting. Makes even the most complicated subject understandable. Knows his stuff and makes it fun! Would go back to Siena again and again if I knew he was teaching! Went above and beyond to make the class (and trips) life-changing. Go to Italy!!
Great prof! Beautifully delivered narrative. Proper use of comedy to hold his audience's attention. Very, very laugh out loud funny at times. A seemingly humble man for such an esteemed historian.
He made the class enjoyable with many jokes but I found they dissipated as the years went by. He seemed more interested in the first half of the semester and rushed through the second half. The TA I had was so-so nothing special. Overall enjoyable but there are better history professors at U of T. Would recommend for first year students.
GREAT Prof. Perfect for 1st years. When I took the class, he had a list of important terms that everyone should look out for during lectures. Super interesting, funny, and just an adorable old man. Would love to take more of his classes!
My favourite professor in the four years that I've been at UofT
Bartlett is hands down my favourite professor. For one thing, he makes weird and sometimes inappropriate jokes and he's really great to talk to. But he really is an excellent professor. He's very clear and has this ease about him when he's lecturing. And he's always happy to sit down with you and explain things further. He's the best history prof!
By far, the BEST professor I have had so far. This course was truly his *thing*. I looked forward to this class every week, my FAVOURITE course of undergrad, I will be taking more courses with him outside of my Subject POSts because he is teaching them. His course honestly changed my life.
one of my fav profs at U of T!!! really funny and explains everything in detail, you can't possibly get lost during his lectures!
Although I've only been in this class for about a month, I can already tell that professor Bartlett is by far one of the better profs here at uoft. His intellectual insight and passion for history really shines during his lectures. The lectures themselves are fascinating, and the readings are great supplements. He speaks incredibly fast though!!
Amazing professor, you can really see he loves his subject. Really appreciated every single lecture
His class is the highlight of my week. Take a course with him, you ought it to yourself to experience the concetrated awesome that is Bartlett.
One of the best the history department has to offer! Professor Bartlett makes lectures interesting, more so in a smaller class where you could ask clarification! He loves what he does and that really keeps you interested in the topic.
One of the best lecturer's at UofT, and that is saying something. Did not need to study that hard for the exam, because the lectures were so epic and memorable. Incredible course, and an amazing professor.
Great prof! Really funny, lectures are interesting and he cares about his students.
He tries his best to make a dull subject interesting. He is very funny, but the lectures are very fast paced. There are multiple papers in this course, all of which I found ridiculously over complicated. If you have a strong work ethic, this is a good course to take. If you're lazy and skip alot, you'll have a hard time passing
Professor Bartlett is one of the best professors I have ever had in my 5 years at U of T! He makes lectures interesting and memorable. I actually enjoyed going to class! He really respects his students and takes time to get to know them. He inspires, empowers, and encourages students to work hard to achieve their full potential.
What a funny professor! His lecture content is huge and may be a little hard to understand given how fast he talks and how much he has to say, but he is a truly inspirational professor. He often cracks sarcastic jokes in lecture, and is the most knowledgeable professor I've seen.
great lecturer, really interested in renaissance history, really interesting to talk to. Lectures are fast and often hard to follow, but if you put in the time he teaches an amazing course.
So funny
cant pay attention in class. speaks way to fast
Amazing class, Prof. Bartlett is incredibly smart and funny. Lectures are hard to follow sometimes.
He is really funny but talks really fast. He doesn't use puts etc. He doesn't post lecture notes.
He brings great lectures and he's very approachable. A lot of readings for a first-year student, but in the end you'll learn how to deal with it.
Show up, make an effort :)
Absolutely wonderful. Passionate about what he talks about, eccentric and hilarious in lecture. Recommend taking his classes just to have him as a professor.
Honestly, you can't ask for a better first year prof. His lectures are a little fast but if you pay attention and do the reading you'll come out of it alright.
Speaks too fast during lectures, always arrives late and leaves early, points are always too longwinded, not clear and concise. If you need feedback or need help with your assignments he is of little to no assistance. critical thinking and independent thought are penalized not rewarded. epitome of outdated approach to teaching. recommend avoiding.
Prof. Bartlett is amazing!! His lectures are great, but be prepared for how quickly he speaks! Despite how fast he talks, he knows how to speak to a large number of students and he definitely keeps you interested. The course itself is a bit difficult in content, but he is very approachable and willing to answer questions and help. Great guy!
He taught one module of VIC225, and it was fantastic. His lectures were funny, highly informative, and he gave the class a lot of freedom when it came to writing the final assignment for that module. He was very easy to talk to, very informative, and just an all around nice guy.
This man is hilarious - by far the best prof I've had so far at UofT. He talks really fast during lectures so it might be difficult to follow at first, but you get used to it over time. Really get prof, the lectures are very interesting and entertaining - highly recommend him!
Great prof, lectures were always interesting and really important to do well in the course. It was more like listening to a well told story than to a lecture tbh. He looks a little like colonel sanders which was great too
Simply a wonderful professor. Kind, helpful, and makes concepts super clear.
Simply a wonderful professor. Kind, helpful, and makes concepts super clear. Will definitely challenge you.
Had Prof. Bartlett for two classes this year (HIS327 is the other) and I can say he was by far my best prof. His passion for the subject is uncontainable and his lectures are very informative and interesting, albeit a little fast-paced. If you attend class and do the readings you should have no problem doing well. Would very highly recommend.
I took both VIC240 and VIC348 with him in Siena, Italy. I cannot say enough great things about this man. He is an inspiration not only in his field, but in life - one of those professors who IS what he does. He grades fair, gives good constructive criticism, and even better life advice. Take his class, and take advantage of his mentorship.
OKAY... tonight we're going to discuss a man who left a legacy at UofT, the likes of which have never been seen before, and that is, Kenneth Bartlett. Such is the language you can expect in a Bartlett lecture. Dotted with humorous cultural references, HIS109 is a course well worth taking. Just be ready to take notes at supersonic speed.
Professor Bartlett will NOT upload lecture notes and expects the students to follow along and take notes while he lectureshe talks fast and jumps from timelines, so it's really hard to follow along for 2 hrs. Readings are crazy heavy and you need to do them, and assignments require a lot of research. His teaching style is too old fashioned.
Overall, it was an okay class although I found him a tad self-obsessed and judgmental of anything he deemed lower than himself.
incredibly knowledgable and passionate but oh my god DO NOT take this course unless you are equally passionate about European history otherwise you will quickly wish the continent never existed. lectures are packed and told in narrative format with no visual aids except for spellings. can't zone out for even a second or you may as well pack it in.
Lectures on ppl who fought for their freedom, & on love for their Patria. In the same breath he insults politicians who uphold those very values now. He sounds like hes been reciting a script for too long, worn-out jokes included. Audio courses almost verbatim what you get in class. Light reading and assignments. He delivers what hes paid for.
Very cool dude who knows his stuff. Moves through material very fast in lecture so make sure to take notes efficiently
Professor Bartlett is passionate about his work and it clearly shows in his lectures, however, he's very old fashioned in his lecture style. You cannot rest for one moment whilst notetaking and make sure to read the textbook before class because you'll have absolutely no idea how to spell any of the Italian names and words he references.
He makes frequent jokes that help balance how much information he crams into lectures. Get ready to write A LOT. However, he does present information in a really easy way to understand. The one drawback is he doesn't put information on his slides so, really, go to class. A wonderful lecturer but talks really, really fast.
This prof is amazing! He's hilarious, passionate, and knowledgeable on the history of Rome. I wish I could take him again. His speech for the first and last lectures were inspirational. He also gives a lot of travel trips for if we ever decide to visit there. Overall 10/10
Dr. Bartlett is amazing, There is a LOT of reading (sometimes 250+ pages a week) but he's so engaging and funny and really cares about his students. You have to work for your A but he gives them when merited. Don't take his classes if you aren't prepared to spend 2x the time you would for other 400 level classes.
I took this course just because of him and it was so worth it. His lectures are long but amazing. I've never had another prof talk for 2 straight hours with no breaks and be completely invested and interested the entire time. He is super knowledgeable and can answer any question you throw at him.
The way he presents lectures will soon be my 13th reason... There is not one word on the lecture slides. He uses complicated vocabulary. He made us buy his book for his course, which was expensive. He lectures as if he is a tour guide. Impossible to take notes and differentiate the people he talks about. Slides are switched randomly.
Lectures are long and very dense but Prof. Bartlett is an amazing lecturer. Assignments were pretty easy, and TAs are great as well. Definitely recommend this class!!
If you love European History, the content is interesting, but his lectures are boring + impossible to follow. Told in a narrative style with no slides. You will be completely lost if you stop taking notes for one second. He wrote the textbook and basically reads it out loud word for word. I barely learned anything, I had to teach it all to myself.
Prof. Bartlett's lectures were incredibly hard to follow and he never stops talking It was like he was reading of his textbook (that he made you buy). However, the content was very interesting; he is also hilarious and will make several jokes throughout the lecture. His assignments are very fun to complete and relatively straightforward.
Kenneth Bartlett was a wonderful professor! His lectures were very informative, and he is clearly a very knowledgeable person. I did, however, find that sometimes the lectures were a lot to take in at once, and it was hard to figure out some of the names of the people he talked about without google. The class material was also very expensive.
Prof. Bartlett is an amazing lecturer and is extremely knowledgeable. He does move quite fast and the lectures are pretty dense, but always interesting! He would add jokes in as well which would lighten the mood. His slides only contain pictures, but as long as you are paying attention and following along you will understand the content.
One person described Professor Bartlett's style of lecturing as being that of a tour guide, and there is no more accurate way to describe it. I found that this course lacked any sense of a coherent narrative, rather we seemed to be moving around from building to building in Rome. Very disappointed in taking this class.
Participation isn't mandatory but you definitely need to attend his lectures. Not only are they more informative than textbooks, he's also a great orator (and very funny). He teaches with the assumption that you love the subject, so if you don't love the subject, best not stay in his class.
Nice man, but I expected a lot more from a History of Rome, not learning just about architecture. His slides would consist of 50-70 photos of Roman architecture with no explanation other than his lightning-fast lecturing with no guide or proper timeline. The textbook saved me for this class.
Professor Bartlett has got to be my favourite prof! He explains concepts clearly, and it is not hard to understand the material. There is a bit of reading but honestly they are not really mandatory to succeed in the course. As long as you read a bit and understand the material, you will be fine in this course. I cannot recommend him more!
This man is a legend in my eyes. Knowledgeable. Hilarious. His brain full of wisdom. Wrote his own textbook if following the lecture is hard for you. He really helped me decide that HIS was for me. Not a bird course by any means, but he makes learning fun. Do not take if you're not interested in history, is all I have to say.
Professor Bartlett is a knowledgeable, hilarious lecturer. His classes can be dense, but he makes history engaging. Using unstuck study and the course textbook helped me stay on top of the content.
Professor Bartlett is a fantastic professor whose lectures are always engaging and inspiring. He is very helpful in providing essay-writing advice and research, and his passion for teaching really shows. I'm so sad he's retiring—he's one of the best professors I've had.
All I got to say is that Professor Bartlett is the best professor I've ever had, incredible lectures and true passion for what he teaches. Very sad that he is retiring.
