positives - only a midterm, a final, and a small paper on a book. NEGATIVES - unable to talk about anything other than Poor urban communities, emphasizing that poverty is our fault, therefore never really teaching the subject at hand.
He's a very realistic man and doesn't take any bs. He expects his students to do the reading, but other than that, there's not much to do. He's very nice and insightful if you get to know him, but he never follows the syllabus. I'd recommend him.
Sharp and enthusiastic though a bit unorganized. DO THE READINGS he will ask questions in class. Dont BS him he sees right through it. If you do the readings and assignments & turn them in on time you will do well, simple as that.

Smart guy that really knows his stuff. Lectures are actually pretty interesting.
Didn't rate last semester, great prof. Extremely passionate about our world condition. Gives a fair amount of work...do it and you will do great. No tests, do the reading and write the papers and you'll do well..he's a fair guy. You'll learn in his class
Nice guy, better than others in same departmemt. Cares about students.
I took him for Cultural Anthropology pre-summer session, and he was great. Only had a midterm and a final, and he gave both exams 2 days in advance so we can answer the questions at home. Incredibly nice guy, very intelligent, and interesting topics.
boring boring, and boring... do the reading, he checks to make sure you did. seems pretty strict
Cultural Anthro. Dr.Brook has some WILD oppinions and can make you feel really dumb if you don't know what you're talking about. Overall, he is a great professor, just DO THE WORK!!
Yeah Brook is a great guy. Lil' over middle-age appears to be serious but comes off more sarcastic and realistic/blunt. Anthropology books assigned a bit lengthy but tolerable. Mid and Final only- do well. We had an optional xtra credit essay 2. He really does care but doesn't sugarcoat-good class!
smart and easy. You will learn a lot in his class. His lectures are very interesting.
Very good professor, not hard but you need to read what he tells you to. Only 2 exams, MI and final, both are self explanatory. Great Guy, def take him.
He is a very nice guy, somewhat sarcastic. His lectures can be very boring sometimes, but he is very informative. This class is not very easy, so don't take it thinking it will be. You have a midterm and final. Also two extra credit papers if you don't do well on the midterm.
EXCELLENT professor! extremely well-informed and very willing to help. challenges your opinion not to change it, but to make you think about what you really believe and why and see that there are many shades of gray to any situation, not just black and white. very little work. definitely take him.
knowledgable guy, passionate, and is flexible with grading. if you do what little work he assigns you'll do great, look forward to going to class, and actually learn something.
Ashole whose sole purpose of my ANTHROPOLOGY CLASS was to glamourize the democratic party. Guy is a friggin joke.
Brook has interesting views and stories to share. Do the readings he asks you to do and then on the 2 tests make sure to give plenty of details & examples (proof that you read) because he loves those. His lectures were informative and interesting.
Epitomizes what a teacher can and should be!
Awful teacher. I learned very little about Anth. All he does is badmouth our president and the US, glamourizes liberals, who are the downfall of this country - and is extremely boring. I learned very little. His assignments are easy, but not educational, and he doesn't take time to help you.
This is the second class I had with Dr. Brook and I enjoyed it. Unfortunately, he does go off on his rampages, but he has a lot of interesting things to say. I would definitely recommend him to anyone with an open mind and good work ethic.
first of all, i fell asleep in EVERY CLASS. it is so boring and all he does is rant about how horrible america is. yes, he has points, and knows what he's doing, but we did NOTHING. we had like, 2 f'in grades and the rest of the time we just sat there, listening to him rant. def. common sense, too.
Very informative, and you came to college to learn other view points, and he'll tell you his. That doesn't make him bad or anything, it makes him a good teacher.
VERY VERY SMART... INTERESTING POINTS OF VIEW....TAKE HIM FOR ANTHRO OFMULTICULTURAL AMERICA
CLOSED MINDED, CONDISENDING, AND PESSIMISTIC. A SURE FIRE WAY TO KILL A GOOD GPA. I SAT, SPOKE AND COMMUNICATED WITH BROOK; I RE-DID MY MID TERM AND EXTRA CREDIT FOR HIM, KEEPING IN MIND ALL HIS POINTERS AND STILL ONLY RECIEVIED A C- I LEARNED A LOT IN HIS CLASS, I WON'T DENY HIM THAT, BUT HE TENDS TO ENJOY MAKING STUDENTS FEEL STUPID SO LOOK OUT!
dr brook is fabulous. he really makes you think critically and ties modern american society to anthropology of other cultures, and the state of affairs our society is in and the way individuals are affected by it. he's NOT some crazy liberal pro-dem radica
just don't take him...he starts out seeming fine but he's not...he is smart and interesting though, if condescending.
I had him in the Spring 2005. If you do the work (keep up with the readings, do all the assignments and be on time so that you take notes VERY IMPORTANT!), you'll be fine! If you need an extension for any assignment make sure you let him know in advance and he'll work it out with you. You'll learn a lot from him, HE DEFINITELY KNOWS HIS FIELD!!! :)
Good teacher if you don't mind doing a lot of work. There are a lot of interesting class discusions to keep things interesting. The key is do ALL OF THE READING, and even more iportantly, TAKE A LOT OF GOOD NOTES. They will help a lot. He also lets the students vote on the format of exams, If you do your work, I would recomend him.
He's great! if you don't do the reading, he threatens you w/ 'daily 1minute quizzes' but you can still pass if you miss all of them. i missed a lot of classes(no attendance)and handed in the two papers for the midterm/final which is easy - he'll ask what format you want it in. just write everything he says in class in ur papers and you'll do fine.
Excellent teacher. Cares about the student and knows anthropology. One of my favorite professors. There's often a huge amount of reading and writing, but if you do them and attend class you're guaranteed to learn something.
If you can avoid this class do it!! Closed minded person who I wonder why gets up every morning with his views on the world....really...run, run far away from this class!
Dedicated teacher.
So many people base their reviews on the professors' politics... It's college dummy, you're going to hear diff ideas. Dr. Brook is a dedicated teacher. However, he can be condescending. He looks for applause after making points that make no sense. Well intentioned, just not a very bright guy. Gives gratuitous work and asks repetitive questions.
Worst class/professor ever. By FAR the worst. Boring, stupid points, assignments are worse than he is. As a student with a 3.9 GPA, I'm not a lazy person criticizing him. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. You will regret it. Spend your tuition money on a good professor/class. This man needs to retire and find some meaning to his life.
worst teacher i've met i think he made me cry once..he loves makin student feel stupid..theres a quiz on every class so u must read..overall DO NOT TAKE HIM!! I WANNA DIE FOR TAKING HIM NOW!AAAHHH!!!
interesting points, enjoyed the readings that were not in text, showed up for extra help when needed, responded to most emails, even helped with final & midterm drafts
If ur an anthro major, u can't avoid him. He's a d*ck. If u do not agree with him, then ur wrong. He lectures the majority of the time, and expects applause when he's finished. He;s very arrogant. Just stay quiet in class, n u should be fine.
Awful. Bitter guy. Just awful.
just had him for a class I was dreading but it turned out ok... got a really good grade and didn't really suffer
He made cultural anthropology alot more interesting than I thought it would be coming in to the class. Great personality and great class discussions. Read exerpts from 4 books and write 3-4 papers. Not that much crazy work involved, just the usual. Definitely recommended.
he's great as long as he sees you making a sincere effort and that you are willing to think and he's far more willing to work with you than it may seem
he's great as long as he sees you making a sincere effort and that you are willing to think and he's far more willing to work with you than it may seem
He assigns readings but then doesn't go over them until weeks later. He only took attendance the first week or two of class. He wanted around a 3 page midterm essay. I wrote a 7 page paper and he didn't correct any of my mistakes and gave me an A. When you answer a question, expect to be pushed for 5 minutes straight.
Interesting lectures, easy class but attendance counts and you have to do the readings!
he's an easy grader when it comes to the service learning logs. i don't even think he reads them. most of the lectures seem pointless but overall it's not terrible. there are no tests or quizzes in this class b/c it's a service learning class. all your grade depends on is some work from the book, 1 paper and service logs which are extremely easy.
Really boring, doesn't talk about whatever we're supposed to be learning. he just goes off on random subjects about nothing. the class is pretty easy though. not many grades.
takes attendance when he feels like it. lectures about nothing. thinks everyone is a loser but him. regardless..easy class. Take it and suck it up. Easy grade.
RUN!this guy tricked us all when he said tht his class wnt demand too mch work!srvicelearning w/ elderly for 2 hrs fr 8-10 weekS, 2 papers, logs for evry elderly visit, 4 freakn books to read, alng w summaries! none of them on sparknotes. Arrogant! Rants all the time about the youth nt caring abt the wrld. Nd God 4bid you prtcipate, he'll bite!!
easy class but lectures can b off topic; assigns readings; no real hw or tests except mid and final which were take home; expects u to know everything; i wouldnt recommend him.
his lectures are very off topic however they can be helpful to life in general but not in anthropology. the work load isn't a lot. read the books he assigns cause its the only work. the mid term and final are take home essays and it is all about the books read. believe me read it. i would recommend him.
The class itself is pretty easy and you will do fine as long as you read the few books he assigns because the only assignments you will have deal with those books. The assignments are easy but attending class is not exciting. He always goes off topic and rants about the ongoings of the world. I really didn't like him at first but he's not too bad
If you don't like to read, do not take this class. Him and Dr. Kelshaw (the other prof. for this class) think that their students have nothing better to do then read and read and read. You have a journal where you must write about all the readings (about 5 per week). If you can, take someone else.
I really did not like him at first. class was about democracy & he is harsh at times but he just wants you to think about the topics. once u realize that, u may start to like him. its A LOT of reading and writing for a GNED class, but its easy material. he gives good notes too. takes attendance sometimes, doesnt count much. learned a lot
Brook is an extremly hard grader. This class had way too much work for a gened. he is passionate about democracy but does not understand not every one is. There is A LOT of work (more than for my major classes) and A LOT of readings. Don't take him for an easy A b/c i busted my ass and am still not getting the A i need.
He is a very good professor! He is not clear some times on due dates, and does not use the blackboard. He requires work to be handed in on time but does not adhere to this standard. Requires a lot of reading and writing that seemed more like busy work. It would be nice to at least discuss each assignment. Would be more clear if he used blackboard.
bad bad bad bad BAD! I can see how some people may like him: he has a good personality and he's very knowledgeable. BUT, not only does he assign too much work for just a GNED class, he basically harasses his students. Every break out session with him was intolerable. He would badger the class into talking, and dare you actually try to speak up, you
Never take this class! He is always right and your opinions don't matter. Way too much reading.
This class is actually very easy, if YOU DO THE READINGS! Read every chapter and/or book he tells you to. There's no way you can fail if you do that. The midterm came right out of the book and he said the final will too. Easy A if you do exactly what he says. I don't really see how you could do poorly in this class.
It's easy to get at least a B and that's probably what I got but I would still not recommend him. He criticizes the class EVERY SINGLE DAY based on generalizations and almost never discusses the readings. It's no surprise that when evaluations were done today, I saw 1s and 2s on just about everybody's I looked over. He should stick to research.
This class is really easy. As long as you read the books, you'll be fine. There are some little assignments in between, but its nothing you cant do. This is college people, you have to work, don't be lazy and read. You can learn a lot from him. Mid and final are really easy as long as you read the books. This class is a challenge, thats the thrill.
He's an awesome teacher! He made the lectures interesting and he made the midterm and final fairly easy. They were long exams but they were take home. Do the readings and there's no way that you won't pass with an A!
He's a dictator! He criticizes the class based on generalizations takes attendance and quizzes whenever he feels like it. Don't you dare speak up because he'll grill you until you die of shame!!! The workload is way too much for a GNED but as long as you read I guess you'll do ok. Midterm and final we're easy but long and were take home....RUN!!!!
I do like Brook. He can be a bit humorless at times but you do need some sort of counter force in your thinking, rather than someone who just agrees with you. His hard views make me form stronger ones of my own. Not recommended for everybody, but you can get something out of him if you really try.
Not the best teacher. Rants for an hour and 15 minutes about seemingly nothing. He is very vague at times and not very fair. You can fight an argument in class all you want but you'll never be right in the end. There's hardly any work all semester and he waits until the last week and a half to load you up on pointless work. Avoid him if you can.
Not a good teach at all, just goes on and on about topics that matter to no one. If you try to speak up or form and arguement he talks over you until you are forced to be quiet. Saves all his work for the last three weeks and than dumps it on you. Need to read alot and its not even interesting books either.
He and professor Kelshaw teach this class as if people want to take it. No one cares about any of the lessons, they just want to graduate. Way too much work for a non-major class. Avoid if you have to take GNED 202 or 303
Completely Useless class. Terrible professor. Ruins GPA's
requires unbelievable amount of work. wanted a 270 page book read in one week along with nightly chapter readings. criticizes every student regardless of their point in class conversations. DO NOT TAKE HIM
will rabble about nothing all for the entire class. he is completely unclear on what he wants. requires too much reading in one semester. he criticizes students on their thoughts if he doesnt agree. so in all do not take unless you like beating your head against the wall for the entire class time because thats all that it really is.
This was a summer pre-session course that only lasted 3 weeks. Required readings of text books and two short books. I read the chapters and skimmed the books and still got an A. As long as you seem interested you'll do fine.
Well he Is alright took him during summer work was a little too much but manageable, classes were all over the place and boring, papers were somewhat easy... The one thing that annoys me about him is that he shuts everyone up regardless of their opinion but expects everyone to contribute to discussions.. Got a B+ in his class I'll recommend him though. You learn a lot of things!!
dreaded this class everyweek so boring class always went over time and he would talk about totally irrelevant topics. wanted students to contribute but if you say something he doesn't agree with, he will shoot you down and embarrass you. lots of readings and one big annoying group project only good thing about this class was the final was take home
Professor Brook is an easy teacher. His lectures are extremely boring, but you should show up bc he pays attention to that. Just read the chapters he assigns and read the books he assigns on time. P.S. - the final take home essay is crucial to your grade. I had a C and it boosted me up and I ended up with a B.
He wasn't that hard. Must do readings to really understand. He is boring sometimes but its bearable. Final is take home which gives time in advance. I got B+ on all my stuff. I got an A in the end. If you need to talk to him he is willing to help. I sent my paper in advance for feedback always helped.
DO NOT TAKE! This man honestly makes you feel like crap if you share your opinion in class and he honestly hates the human race. took it for have a semester and dropped because i was both failing and contemplating suicide sitting in class at 10am every mourning. DON'T TAKE!
DO NOT TAKE HIM! You will be miserable the whole semester. If he doesn't agree with you on what you say then he will grade you as he wishes on the few assignments he gives. Not an easy A and definitely too much work and boring for a GEN ED!
Very bitter and a tough grader. The workload is relatively light but he goes off on tangents and talks about interesting topics but none of which will be on your exams. I recommend avoiding him if you can. He's not the best teacher but he is an ok person.
Probably the worst professor I have ever had. The content of the course is interesting, but he talks to the students as if they are completely incompetent, which does not create an appealing learning environment. The readings and the work are scattered and hard to keep track of. I would recommend taking this class with a different professor.
awful awful awful awful...I cringe just thinking about this class. do not take.
this class was so easy. all you have to do is show up!! no tests, just papers-that are opinion based. practically tells you the answers/reasonings that he wants in the paper. just listen carefully and take notes. whatever his opinion is about the subject, use it bc otherwise its considered wrong.
Grade based on 11 assignments & either service learning or 15-20 pg term paper. Passing w/ a good grade isn't difficult; you just need to dedicate a lot of time. Prof Brook will give you a hard time but he does it to make you think. Overall good class :)
Very decent class. Only 3 papers and 3 tests the entire semester. Absolutely nothing else besides weekly reading. Prof is very serious about reading. Attendance is mandatory! He is cranky and strict but once you get used to him he isn't bad at all. Willing to help if you really need it. I recommend him. Received a B in his class.
I took this class as a freshman and I am about to graduate in 2 months. I still to this day think about how this was the worst class I took at msu. He was the rudest professor I have ever come across. If you the option to take a different professor, save yourself the suicidal thoughts you'll endure during his class and pick something else.
HORRIBLE. I was hopeful that I would learn something but not with him. He is downright mean and if you share your opinion on something be prepared to be criticized and embarrassed. Only a couple papers and reading is required but his lectures are often off-topic and useless. Textbook is informative, he is not. Avoid him if possible.
Awful professor. Criticizes you on everything you do. Tells you your opinions are wrong even though he asks for it. Unreasonable. RUN AWAY IF YOU CAN.
took him for applied anth and nobody knew what he was talking about the entire semester.
Professor Brook kind of belittles you. He'll ask you a question and only accept HIS answer. He doesn't care for you opinion. you must attend all the classes & take notes. Midterm & Final which are papers. no quizzes unless he sees class isn't reading (make sure you participate). for the papers, write down exactly what he says in class & you're good
Dr. Brook is an amazing professor and is extremely passionate about Anthropology. He gives two essays and one midterm and one final. Everything is take home and he gives you at least two weeks to do it. He is very specific with your essays so utilize his office hours. He will give you EXACTLY what he's looking for if you ask! Definitely take him!
I honestly really enjoyed his course. He's a great guy. Very helpful and caring. He makes you think. Sometimes it was like he was yelling at you but it was really just to get you to open your eyes to what was actually going on in the world. I'd definitely recommend him! (Also make sure you buy/rent the books! You will need them.)
Dr. Book has very strong opinions and will state them all the time during class. Make sure you are caught up wit the reading because he asks questions in class to see if you have been. If no one is participating he gives pop quiz to see if you have been reading. He really cares in seeing his students succeed.
Dr. Brook is a brilliant professor, there are 2 papers, a midterm and a final which he lets you choose if you want a take home midterm/final. For every paper (including midterms/final) GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS he appreciates the time you set aside for him and will tell you EXACTLY what to write in your papers to get an A. Make sure u participate!
His lectures were pretty boring, but the work load is easily laid out for you on the syllabus. Your grade is based on a a few assignments per week and a paper. Couldn't get any easier. Sometimes I felt like I didn't need to go to class because the lectures were not relevant to the bookwork, but I always went anyway.
Great professor. I took this class because it filled two requirements, although the lectures are terribly boring they do pertain to the material covered on the take home exams. His rubric is a bit unclear but he is a very fair grader and if you don't like your grade he'll give you a chance to argue doing it over if you go to office hours. Easy B
Seems interesting AT FIRST + has good opinions about society. Lectures are boring and he talks extremely quietly. He has the penmanship of a kindergartener, so ur notes won't be the best. Doesn't give a lot of assignments, just around 6 essays, but grades horrendously. U can answer the essay questions perfectly and he'll still give you a bad grade.
Dr Brook loves to talk, he will talk about his own opinions for the entire lecture, he'll say he wants to hear your opinions but really he'll say you're wrong. The only grades are 3 papers all on the books we read, but if you just pay attention to the lectures, you don't really even need to read the book cause he'll talk about the essay questions.
I took his class because I was an anthropology major. His class may seem intimidating yet if you attend his class (and a little tip: tape record his class for future assignments) he will truly open your eyes about the world
DO NOT TAKE!!!! At first I read the reviews and thought it would be easy but going to the lectures were miserable. He basically just talks about his political opinions the entire time, and he is boring to listen to. There were 4 papers including the mid term and the final. This class was one of the biggest wastes of my time.
Dr. Brook is a good professor, he attempts to make you think about what you are learning which is hard to do with a subject that is so boring. He will let you submit your essays to him to get his advice on how to get an A on that assignment. He does use the lectures to push his political opinions on you but participation matters and can help you.
Dr. Brook was overall amazing. All we did for his class were two essays, plus a final essay and mid term essay. The essay prompts are pretty simple and clear. He also goes over them in class! He does his best to help his students understand the material. His classes are lecture heavy!
I enjoyed his class. All you have to do is read the material thats giving. i promise you would find them interesting. He gives essays for the whole semester.
Dr. Brook was actually a good professor. Although at times the lectures were boring you actually got something out of it in the end, I recommend him for this class as he can really open your eyes up about the world.
HE'S THE NICEST AND MOST CARING PROFESSOR OUT THERE. He cares a lot about his students and does everything in his power to make the course simple but interesting. The work done in his class was a total of four essays, that' all! Pay attention to his lectures, read a little, and you'll be more than fine.
