Sometimes gets a little sidetracked in class, but overall, a nice guy!
He's an extremely nice man, but has trouble teaching well. He is rather funny though; we took home 3 pages worth of quotes, but very little chem.
Dr. Carter was the most easily distracted and off-task teacher I have had. He knows some much about chemistry, but lacks any ability to convey it to his students. He is willing to help, but can't do it within 10 minutes. The class is hard because he is hard to follow, not because of the workload.
AHHH THIS GUY ALMOST RUINED MY CAREER. I am a chem major and without the Teacher Assistants, I would have been doomed. TAs are your dire necessity in this class!! To get an A, you don't have to do ANY work at all. Just go to his office and listen to his droll for like 3 hours--worked for me o_O
really random and gets side-tracked really really easily. but it can be very entertaining. this is a pretty easy course - but don't expect to learn much.
Do not take this professor. He is a great guy, but is a terrible teacher! I went to his office hours for 1 question and was there for 3 hours, not to mention that I got nothing out of it. I had to drop his class also. This guy will definitely ruin your career if you dont have an extensive background in chemistry.
Dr. Carter is one of the nicest people I've ever met, but he's not a very good professor. He absolutely loves chemistry, but doesn't understand that not all of his students are on the same level that he is. He is easily distracted and will talk about his life during class rather than teaching and expect students to do well on tests. I went to his office once for a 5 second question and was in there for an hour and a half. He's super sweet though. Know him as a person instead of a prof.
Dr. Carter is an awesome guy,(really funny too) but he has trouble claifying what needs to be said. If you really need to know this stuff, let's say for the MCAT, don't take him! Unless you are really REALLY familiar with chemistry then you'll be fine. I had to drop his class to take it with someone who could bring better clarification to me.
Dr. Carter = great person but HORRIBLE teacher. However, the class isn't that hard ... understanding is what takes all of your time. If you can teach yourself out of class, you'll be fine. If you rely on actual instruction, you're screwed.
Dr. Carter is a great guy, but a bad teacher. He's very tangental with a tendancy to go off topic. Eventually he comes back to the point. He lectures over a few main concepts and expects you to know understand everything. He teaches connections instead of the topic. You'll know how the material connects with everything else, but not the material.
He's such a nice guy but he cannot teach at all! If you just need CHEM 120 and not 121, it's no big deal. If you're a chem. major, avoid him at all cases possible.
Don't take Carter if you can avoid it. You wont learn a thing except of course the random things he spend the WHOLE class on teaching. He recently implimented a new style of learning POGIL...you will learn to hate it and its just an excuse for him not to teach and have you learn from a worksheet.
Dr. Carter is hilarious and very caring towards his students, but don't take him if you actually plan on learning from class. If you want to do sudoku the whole time to keep yourself entertained then go for it. If you do the reading you can squeak by with a B possibly an A. But he is soooo random.
Do not take this class if you don't have a strong background in Chemistry. Dr. Carter does not teach/lecture he just hands out a worksheet and expects you to magically learn the concepts. He is helpful but it takes him like 20minutes to answer one question. He is the most random person ever, you will learn everything but Chemistry.
Dr. Carter is the worst teacher. I'm a Chemistry major and was somehow put in his class. All he does is hand out worksheets for us to do by ourselves or he just stands in front of the class with his backpack on or his random ski mask on talking about nothing you need to know. Also, he's late for class every day and isn't helpful at all.
I seriously don't know why people complain about this class. He really wants people to try and learn. He has a teach yourself method that some people aren't comfy with. If you've taken chem in H.S. this is a cake walk. Honestly, a great teacher and a hell of a nice guy, and I think it's awesome that he comes to class in arctic atire. EASY A.
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE. If you want to learn, you'll have to do it yourself. We've tried to cram the last two months of information into this last week of class. I have had to teach myself almost everything. We are assigned worksheets and expected to learn from them. And there are no straight answers to any questions.
Chem 120 with Dr. Carter was one of the most frustrating experiences of my life. Terribly unorganized, very tangential, very few grades. Avoid if you can. If you have to take him, I would suggest getting a good study group to go over the information that is not taught in class but you are expected to know.
We had to pay 40.00 for an online program we used twice. I was tested once for midterm and once for the final. Of the labs we did we were graded on two of them. These are the only points we received whatsoever. His lectures are about Chemistry as much as they are his personal life. You won't do much work but don't expect an A.
You basically teach yourself because his lectures never make sense and he rambles about random things not even related to chem. However half of our tests were take home, and I missed multiple labs that he let me make up with other people's data,so I made up points and did well overall.
Dr.Carter is a nice man. With that said, try to never take him for a class. Even though I only had him for seminar, I got a taste of how he teaches, ALL OVER THE PLACE. He just doesnt know how to stay on a topic, at all.
He loves what he's doing, but unfortunately he doesn't have the ability to get anyone else to feel the same way. His random, lengthy tangents carry no value with the point he was previously trying to make. This class is one in which you must teach yourself!
He cares more about telling you his life than actually teaching you chemistry. He will set deadlines throughout the semester and keep none of them. He offered zero in class tests and rarely gives useful or relevant notes. He did have an online homework and quiz program, that was unhelpful and often wrong. AVOID HIM AND HIS CLASS AT ALL COSTS!
He doesn't teach anything and you completely have to teach yourself. It is stupid.
Carter is the most useless professor that I have ever had. He's very enthusiastic but that's just not enough. The only test this semester is the final. There has been very little homework assigned and the lectures are completely uselsess. All he does is ramble but he takes attendance to you have to come. He's SO frustrating!
Don't.
Carter babbles a lot. He was always late for class, and he often got sidetracked during lecture. That said, he didn't require much work; he gave us one test, one "open note, group size of our choice" test (i.e., class turned in one test) and collected a couple of assignments. He wasn't hard, but if you are a Chem major, avoid him.
Dr. Carter was extremely frustrating because he simply did not teach. Although he is a nice guy and enthusiastic, avoid his class if you want to learn any chemistry at all.
Dr. Carter really does seem like a nice guy. I don't doubt that he knows his chemistry. He just doesn't know how to teach it. We never get homework. Its been a month and WE STILL HAVEN'T RECIEVED A SYLLABUS! Like everyone else has said, If you really wanna learn chemistry, DONT TAKE HIS CLASS. Im just staying in it to get and easy A and keep my GPA
The labs were super easy, show up and you had an A. Be glad he doesn't do many tests, the ones he did with us were so ultra specific you had trouble getting above a C if you hadn't just recently scoured the textbook for details. Like others have said, it's a teach yourself course with attendance taken.
very scatter-brained, he does not stay on task at all and is very hard to follow. labs are really easy, very few tests if any other than the final, a lot of group work is done in class
Are you a pre-med student hoping to not get into medical school? Are you a chemistry major looking to not learn in basic chemistry and be unprepared for any subsequent courses? If so, Carter is for you!
It's hard to talk about such a nice guy who teaches like Carter does. Well, he doesn't teach. We received the syllabus about 3 months into the semester which was a huge wake up call to HOW MUCH WE HADN'T LEARNED. Not to mention we never knew our grade before the final. His stories are entertaining until you start to realize the trouble you're in.
Good lectures
Easy to approach
Useful powerpoints
I agree that he is semi-approachable, but the powerpoint and the lectures are not good at all. He tells entertaining stories and tries to somehow tie them to Chemistry, but in the end he is an awful chemistry teacher. Actually, he's not really a teacher, come to think of it. He's a man that comes to class in goofy apparel and does not teach.
Very Approachable. willing to help.
Entertaining prof
Makes class easier than it should be
AVIOD. It is now the night before the final and I have NO IDEA where my grade is in this class. He has only returned tests back, nothing else. Very scatter-brained and unorganized! Not a good teacher. Nice guy, terrible teacher.
While Carter knows his concepts, he's very scatter-brained. It'll take him 20 minutes to answer a question that could've been answered in less than 5. He's approachable & willing to help, however, I've had to approach him numerous times to fix my grade. Some people have had zeros since the beginning of the semester. Overall, the class was easy.
Very nice guy, but a HORRIBLE professor! What would normally be a 3-5 minute in-class explanation somehow always turned into a 15-20 minute analysis of something off topic. Very abstract when teaching which makes it hard to follow in class. The labs were the worst! Only take him if there is no one else available.
This guy is nice and that all. He simply can't teach. Plain and simple. Avoid if at all possible because you won't learn a thing.
If you've had good chemistry teachers before and remember it well or you can learn chemistry by reading a book, you'll be fine. Carter doesn't teach. You learn absolutely nothing in class. The tests are hard because you have no idea what will be on them. The tests are the only grades you know, so you never know what your overall grade is. Avoid
Dr. Carter is a really nice guy. He rounds up grades and gives a lot of extra credit. However, he is not a good teacher and you won't learn much from him. Just go to class, attend the labs, and you shouldn't get anything less than a B.
Dr. Carter is very scatter brained and often rambles on for half an hour about something he could explain in 5 minutes. However, he is very approachable and helpful if you go to his office hours. Very easy A.
Really easy and helpful one on one but classes are useless except for the attendance
Avoid! Especially if you want to learn ANYTHING. Easy class but I have a test in his class on Friday and I have no idea what will be on it! You don't have to pay attention in class, you can play a game on your comp and not get in trouble but he does not teach and if you approach him in person you'll be there for an hour waiting for a yes/no answer.
It's April 14th and I truthfully say I have learned 1 thing in these three months...and I was high the day I learned it. Correlation? Show up. Make sure he knows your name. And you should do fine. Bring stuff to do in class. You'll need it to entertain yourself during class.
All of these bad reviews are true! When I signed up for Carter, I just thought these reviews aren't all true, but after taking his class, I see that they are! He's a nice guy, but at least 25 minutes of class everyday is spent on him telling us random stories that have nothing to do with anything. He doesn't communicate clearly. Avoid!!!
To restate what all the review have said this far, he is a poor teacher when it comes to lectures. He gets easily distracted and isn't at all clear when trying to teach in lectures. However, if you take the time to go to his office and get help pretty regularly he is very helpful. He's far more clear if you go to him for help.
Dr. Carter is the sweetest professor ever. His lectures are pointless (I suggest just getting a friend to initial the attendance sheet for you). He goes off on tangents frequently. Labs don't coincide with the lectures. If you are confused with anything, go to his office hours. He cares about his students A LOT and only wants you to succeed.
If you have to take this class as a requirement, I would strongly recommend taking Dr. Carter. I was not looking forward to taking this class, but Dr. Carter consistently kept class interesting and exciting. His grading system is confusing, but there are plenty of safeguards for your grade. Bottom line...If you show an interest, you will get an A!
Contrary to what many of these reviews suggest, Dr. Carter is great. While I can understand why a chemistry major may have been frustrated, for a person with little to no knowledge of chemistry or aptitude for science beforehand, this class was perfect. I looked forward to it and felt like I learned. He loves to teach.
He won't teach you anything, but literally he gives you the test AND the questions AND the answers ahead of time! Literally changes nothing before real test. I memorized the #s and letters, did the final in 15 minutes, and got an A. if you're trying to pass a mode, this is the way to go. And yes...bring something to entertain yourself in calss with
Dr. Carter is a very nice man. He's always willing to help and to try to explain things in a different way. However, during lectures, he would stray from the original topic. I went into Chem 100 with no prior exposure to the subject and I feel like this class didn't give me a solid foundation of chemistry.
Dr. Carter is, without a doubt, one of the kindest men I've ever met. He's thrilled to get to know and help his students, maybe to a fault. Yes he's scatter-brained, but if you take the time to speak with him he's thrilled to help you. Bottom line, show him you care even a little and you're going to get an easy GPA boost in a required course.
Carter sees that Chem 100 is not a majors class; it's full of upperclassman trying to get their required credits to graduate. He makes the class fun and easy to understand. He talked to me for an hour about atoms, so he does care about learning. Really a nice guy who wants the very best for you. Labs are fun and are more like playing than work.
This is the class to take if you are taking it for your LSP requirement and have no further need for chemistry. All of your pop quiz grades, and one of your test grades, can be replaced by your final grade. He puts all the tests and final online ahead of time, with the answers, and hardly changes them, so not getting an A is almost impossible.
Dr. Carter is so nice! He will give you lots of help. However, you won't need the help. This class is an easy A. Dr. Carter tends to get off topic many times. Plus, he basically posts keys to the test before you take the test. All he does is rearrange the order of the questions. The nicest professor you'll ever meet!
One of the worst professors I have ever had even though the class was one of the easiest classes. He simply cannot teach. He gets distracted, teaches about irrelevant things, isn't prepared or on time, and does not understand that most people take his class because they have to, not want to. Nice guy but he will frustrate you with how he teaches.
Dr. Carter is so passionate about Chemistry, and I think he truly believes that he is an amazing professor because everyone receives A's. However, everyone receives A's in his class because he literally gives you a "study guide" that is the same as the test. It was the easiest I have ever taken. I got an A but could not tell you anything about Chem
Carter is a nice guy who just wants to make the world a better place.
He is very talkative and gets sidetracked easily during lectures and will forget to explain things more thoroughly. The book and online resources can be very helpful. He is not the best organized though and is not always clear on material. He does post past tests on Blackboard though and they are pretty much the same as current tests.
Dr. Carter is by far one of the nicest people I have ever met. That being said, he is not the best professor. He gets off topic in almost every class. His office hours will be more helpful than lectures. He posts tests from previous semesters and the current semester on Blackboard so as long as you look at those, the class is basically an easy A.
Dr. Carter is a very personable and kind-hearted individual. He could talk to you for days about the most obscure topic while you stand there smiling and nodding. However, I learned practically nothing about Chemistry. To pass, you only need to memorize the previous tests he puts on blackboard and sign the attendance sheet. Very easy "class".
Seems like a real nice guy to have lunch with but if you have other things to do with your day don't take him as a professor. I have never seen anyone get as off topic for so long as Dr. Carter. Would've rather taken a harder class solely so we could've actually stayed on topic for more than 30 seconds.
Such a funny guy! He is very passionate about chemistry and that shows in class. All of his previous tests are online so that makes it easy. However, I didnt learn anything in his class because he goes off topic after 30 seconds of talking about chemistry. He assigns homework but you will never turn it in. Lookin for an easy A, TAKE CARTER
Dr. Carter is one of the most caring professors on this campus. Yes, his class is an easy A, but that is because he wants students to learn without being too stressed. He understands that most people taking his class are only taking it because they have to. Talks a lot, but such a sweet and caring man.
If you need chem100 to graduate, I recommend Carter!! Easy A and his lectures are entertaining. You won't learn a whole lot, but you will do well with minimal effort.
Alrighty so, Kenneth is a wonderful man however Dr. Carter is a terrible professor. I did not learn a single thing in this class. Nothing. He posts all of his old tests and quizzes online. I memorized the answers and got an A on every test. Super easy and make sure you don't go to class tired because all this man does is talk and talk and talk.
I had Dr. Carter for chem 100 and really enjoyed his class. I think that sometimes he could get a bit off topic, so you should know that going into the class. Whenever I had issues following along with the lecture, he was happy to help explain things further outside of class. Just go over the practice tests and go to labs and it's a pretty easy A.
Dr. Carter was all over the place, but here's the deal. If you go through old tests, you can get an A. He does have some new questions, but not for the final. His policy was that the final grade can replace the tests. So you're golden. He's a gem, but a boring, and off-topic professor. Lectures were honestly worthless, unless you're a major.
In a nutshell, if you want an easy A with minimal effort, take Dr. Carter (he is an incredibly kind and caring person); but if you want to learn a significant amount about chemistry, you may have to teach yourself quite a bit.
CHEM100 through Carter was very easy. I would not recommend taking if you are a CHEM Major, as I learned hardly anything. We only had to do Labster simulations with unlimited attempts, and then had to do the Exam with 5 attempts, open book. This was during COVID, so attendance not mandatory I would take Carter again! If only math was this easy...
Dr. Carter doesn't deserve these bad reviews. He's a sweet guy & its clear that he knows a lot about what he's talking about. He can be hard to follow sometimes so I wouldn't recommend him for chem majors but if you're just filling the LSP requirement he's the way to go! He's passionate & wants students to succeed, there's no reason not to get an A
he gave us too much assignments
Dr. Carter is one of the nicest people I have ever met. In his syllabus he says that he can be hard to follow, so it is expected to read the book. Most days he talks about class for 5-10 minutes and then rambles about his cats or his college life. This class is so easy and a 10/10 option to fulfill a credit. Also, basically no homework.
If you want to fulfill a lab science perspective with an easy A, Dr. Carter is your man. His zooms are very boring and I found myself dosing off a lot. Very little chemistry was actually learning (I learned more in high school). All homework was just busywork and didn't help my learning. Sometimes, I wish I would have taken a harder course.
If you are looking to take chem 100 Carter is definitely who you should do it with! He is an amazing professor who is great at teaching non chem major students. Office hours always helped me out.
very patient professor
Dr. Carter is an absolute GEM to the chem department. His lectures always left me in the best moods because he's so optimistic and caring. He would do well as a motivational speaker. Take any course you can with him, you will not regret it. He also has cool fireproof pants he likes to show off.
Genuinely good guy, if you are taking this class to learn chemistry dont take him. But if you are taking it for an A, this is your man. And Im sorry, but I am really disappointed as to how low of a rating this man has. Im not bored during his class and he grades very leniently. 10/10 would take again.
This man is the love of my life! An absolute blessing to the science department, I wish he taught more courses. He has such a radiant smile and is more than willing to help those with questions or concerns. Responds quickly to emails. I'm not sure why he has so many negative reviews. Take his course!!
Dr. Carter is the nicest man I have ever met. While I may not recommend this class for students needing to really learn a lot of complex chem down the road, it is a perfect class for non-majors! Not too much work, fun in class, and easy to get through.
Kenneth Carter was an absolute blessing to my Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. If you are actually wanting to get like super into chem, maybe not this course, but if you want a relaxing class that's an easy A with slight effort, take this class! It's a perfect beginners class for non-majors. Ray of sunshine, 10/10
Carter is such a nice guy! If you want an easy A, take this class! I did other homework, napped, and played Coffee Shop in his class. Attendance is not mandatory. Little to no homework. Easiest A of my life. There were no tests except the final exam. You don't need to turn in labs.
Listen, do NOT take this class with Dr. Carter if you actually need to know any chemistry whatsoever. Granted, if you are taking Chem 100 you probably don't, but just beware. He is incredibly sweet and understanding, but he is a terrible teachers. His lectures are more like monologues, but you do need to show up. Labs are easy and required.
