Dr. Collins is very nice and always willing to help students. His lectures are very interesting.
great teacher. very fun. very understanding with personal problems in class and in life. cant ask for a better teacher in such a difficult subject. Tests from book questions so study because they can be a bit confusing.
Taken this course over summer. He's cool. Funny. Try to make the class fun. Jokes about his height and baldness. The class goes by quickly.Beprepare for field trips. Tests questions are tricky. The mulitple choices are super tricky.Test come 4m notes+test
Dr. Collins is unmistakably one of the best teachers in the science department. He's very funny, nice & always willing to help his students. I'm not saying this b/c i was 1 of the A/B students..i actually got a C -- my own fault for not studying & putting in effort. But in general, he's awesome!
he was a really cool teacher, pretty funny and really helpful. i will try to take a diff bio class that he teaches because he is really clear and easy going.
He's alrite!! not one of the best teachers i've taken. I had a hard time finding the right approach to this class. He's not lenient tho.. he WILL take points off for missing key words!!!!
Outstanding teacher. Great presentation of material and tests strictly off the notes. This is not an easy class and much, much, work is needed to get an A but its possible. Always willng to help and answer any and every question. Even my dumb ass ones.
He's a nice and laid back guy. He tells you everything you need to know and should expect to see on tests, but the subject matter involves many long hours of studying and memorizing stuff. Lectures can get a bit confusing at times, but he will happily repeat information. The book is not necessary to pass this class.
He's a cool teacher..really nice and fair with the grading...the class itself is pretty challenging though. the tests are kinda hard also.
he's really easy going and kinda goofy. as long as you study and listen, its really super easy. if you dont read the chapters, take notes, or go to class though, you wont do very well
He's an in-between teacher. His lectures seem really easy, but his tests are difficult. His presentation of new material leaves some to be sought after, so it's important to read the book.
Mr Collins is awesome!!
He is nice and funny, but his tests are hard. he gives lots of notes which makes you think you don't really need to read the book, but you do! his tests are not that easy. You will get a C if you memorize all the notes.
Dr. Collins is a champ.
Dr. Collins is easily the best teacher I've had at this school. If you take the time to talk to him outside of class, you will realize that he is very sincere in his love of the subject and his desire to make sure you pass. Make sure you go to labs, and he will give you the lecture notes in PPT format if you ask him.
Lectures are straightforward: he talks, you listen and make notes. For me that is very boring. Tests are moderately difficult. they consist of multiple choice and written questions. Personally, I always did well on multiple choice, but bombed on written... do well on both and you will do well in lecture. Lab is cake. show up and do the work.
although i studied alot,i always failed my test.all you do in lecture is copy the overboard.this class you need to teach yourself to know whats going on.collins is a nice teacher though.
he tries to make the class interesting, makes jokes etc...You definately have to study to get an A
tests are impossible! they are soo hard. I am a B average student and i studied for hours for his tests and they were really really hard i fail about all of them. his final is cumulative. And all u do during class is take notes for 2 hours!! he is a nice teacher but its a hard class!
Class structure is easy: take notes and take tests. show up do lab work. that sounds easy however, his grading is sooo impossible! questions are unclear and ambiguous. he proves that biology is "the science of memorization". on the written portions you have to include every-single-little detail to get a decent grade. no book required.
I took 170 with collin twice. His tests are relee hard. bio170 covers so many materials and his tests are impossible to get an A. At first time, there was one person who got an A and more than half of p/p dropped. Second time when I took during summer school (he was the only tr) there were maybe 3 p/p got an A. Because I had previous tests it
Nice guy. Tests were pretty hard. Pretty challenging class that requires a lot of time.
He's nice however the tests are impossible. The wording is different in his lectures, notes, the book and lab. Unfortunately if you are new to college biology you will find yourself under water before you get a chance to learn in his class. Even when you know the material his wording on the tests WILL throw you off.
i stayed for the full lecture probably only 4 days throughout the entire semester. really boring class ,but hey its Bio. every question on the exams are covered in the lecture. if you want to do well, pay attention to the lecture and don't just blindly copy the power point. the grade curves for the exams were ridiculous. 85% is a perfect.
Pay attention in class and write down everything! This is where the test comes from.Book not as helpful as class notes.DR. Collins will tell you what u need to do for the grade u want.my class was on a curve, helps alot.Final cummulative, but not as difficult as midterm tests.Dr. C is a nice guy, show interest and he'll help u.
WOW I do no think that I have ever had to try so hard for a C. He is a very hard teacher but once you pass the class you feel really good. LOTS OF NOTES AND HARD HARD TEST.
Very interested and very informed, Ken knows his stuff and if he doesn't he's happy to sit down and figure it out WITH you. It is college, prepare to READ be interested and you'll do fine.
very difficult class but hes a very good teacher. In order to get an A you have to eat breathe and live biology for that time period when your in the class good luck!
Really nice guy with a passion for teaching. Very intellectual and knows his stuff. Went into the class wanting to be a bio major, came out undeclared. I am an honors student who has taken very difficult classes, hands down hardest course i have ever taken and i agree. YOU HAVE TO WORK YOUR BUTT OFF FOR JUST A C!!!
If you are undecided about your future in Nursing or Pre-Med!! Take him !!!! He's a very good man, he taught us alot of things beside General Biology. I love his class very much still :)
Collins is a great teacher. He finally started putting his powerpoints up online and it made a big difference in studying. I used the book a lot just for studying purposes. Even though the lab was before lecture and it was 5 straight hours of bio, it went by fast because he's so thorough.
DR. Collins is a great teacher. Most of the bad reviews are from people who didn't study as much. Just read the book and go over the lectures he puts up online. Study! Study! Study! and you will pass. Getting an A is possible!
Had some sense of humor. Generous in grading w/ extra credits. Really wants students to understand bio. Lectures were from text but in different order so be prepared! Come to class everyday and on time because you don't want to miss quizzes which affect total grade a lot. The lab was with another prof (P.DeVries) so not sure about Dr. Collins' lab.
First off, biology is not an easy class. However, he does everything he can to help his students pass. You can tell that he wants everyone to pass the class. He allows extra credit and drops 1 exam and 2 quizzes. Do well on all exams and you skip the final! You will actually learn something in his class. Memorization will NOT work! A+ professor!!
Dr. Collins is the most hilarious person. He knows his stuff! Pretty much the best teacher at Fullerton College!
not helpful
His lectures are all given through power point, which are all later posted online. He practically reads the lecture from the powerpoint, which i think is redundant. He gives quizes during the semester. Bottom line is, if you need an INTERESTING lecture, this is NOT your class.
His exams were pretty hard, he didn't go over all the stuff over lecture and expects you to know it all. eh, don't take if you don't need too
Good teacher, but poor teaching skills. Every class, he reads the power points, students are busy to copy ppts. There is not time to listen what he talks about. The power points and tests are totally different!
Prof. Collins was very personable but not the greatest lecturer/teacher. He reads straight from powerpoint and since tests and quizzes are all based on lecture, you spend the whole time writing and not really listening. Textbook unnecessary but you better study your notes often and know them inside and out if you want a good grade. Hard class.
Dr. Collins is an outstanding professor. He knows what he is talking about! He spends a lot of time preparing his lectures and is frequently available to talk with students. He cares about each student and wants them to succeed. Take his class and you won't be disappointed!
LOVE this class! It helped me decide my career path. Dr. Collins wants to help you succeed. I plan on taking another class from him.
Great teacher. Very clear in lecture. Study your notes and pay attention in lab and you will do fine. Very lenient. Wish he was teaching 170.
Professor Collins is the best. I love everything of this class. He makes this class fun and in enjoyable. I wish that all the other professors were like him.
I was really looking forward to this class and Im sooo glad I got Collins!! Lectures were always funny and interesting, and if you need more real life examples to compare topics to, just ask, hes really good at trying to explain...and that curve he grades on wasnt too shabby either! I really loved this class, wish he was teaching Earth Science. =o)
I love the subject so much so the lectures were very interesting. The tests were somewhat hard but your golden if you study the powerpoints and read the chapters once. He helps you out with extra credit after the tests and is very nice if you dont understand a concept.
Super hard examss!!!!!!! BUT, no reading required.. Just listen to his awesome lectures cause he's just so awesome!!!!
Dr. Collins is an amazing teacher. had no clue about the world of biology until I took his class. Study and listen during lectures, all tests go along with lecture and assigned chapters, no hidden bs.
Collins is a great guy and prof. The poor ratings are from people who didn't do much. Lectures are from the book but in different order. Very helpful, attentive, approachable & funny. No study guides just go over the labs and powerpoint and you should be fine. Highly recommend using the book it makes things easier. Collins keeps it 1HUNNA!!! GBE
Extremely helpful teacher. Is very passionate about his subject which translates into his lectures.
Take a different teacher!!! Took him in the summer and he was horrible! Test questions are unnecessarily confusing. Class average was a low C. Boring lectures and the book was hardly used. He just expects you to memorize every single detail in his lecture powerpoints. Wouldn't even give higher grades to borderline students. AVOID THIS GUY!!!
He was not the best teacher. He rather talk with the students that focus on work. He is nice, but the tests are unrealistic. I studied very hard but what we had to study was almost never on the tests. I wouldn't take him if I were you...
Definitely a hard class. Lab wasn't very hard. The midterm and final in lab were open book but his lecture tests were very hard and we weren't given a study guide. Only take this class if you have the time to study and put the effort in.
I never opened the text book and got by with a C but did study notes. Study is crucial for success. I never missed class. Lab is easy. He drops lowest two quizzes and one test.
He is a great teacher! In order to get an A study the power points and especially text book! He helped me get more interested in biology, I didn't get a A but that was on my part for not studying as much, but he is very fair, I recommend studying the chapter very well before going in to lecture, I mean really getting the just and you will pass
Dr. Collins class is not easy. You have to study A LOT. You don't really need the text book. Everything on the exams is in his power points. He is very clear and will answer any question you have without making you feel stupid. His lab however requires more homework than other instructors. No study guides. The man loves bugs! Very smart!
He's not very reliable when it comes to replying to emails. He's pretty funny while he teaches. Too much material to study for, weekly quizzes, one exam is based on 6 chapters, lab attendance is a MUST since there's daily quizzes. Attendance is CRUCIAL on first two weeks or else he'll drop you and give it to the next student on the wait-list.
Good professor but is not very good at responding to e-mails and is late most of the time. Field-trips are mandatory and usually he is late to those too. Gives quiz's that are based on textbook reading, so read text. Exams are based on his PowerPoint lectures so study them well. Visit him during office hours for additional help; he is good at this.
He's really nice. Gives pop quizzes once a week, but they're short and multiple choice. He let's you use your lab handouts as open-notes when taking a lab exam. :) He also posts power point lectures online, so you could print them out.
Collins is a pretty funny teacher. I did enjoy his class. Though, I did take him early mornings so it was hard to get through his long lectures. There are quizzes every week aside from an exam week and reading is pretty important, but I wouldn't say mandatory. Most of the test questions are from the lectures, which he puts on his website.
Fantastic professor. One of my favorite classes. He's funny and makes the material enjoyable. Tips: -Read the chapter before class, there will be a quiz. -ATTEND CLASS. He posts his power points, but he will tell you in class what's important. -Participate! Easy points. -Go to his office hours to study, he'll notice, counts as participation.
You really have to pay attention to the lecture and read to pass the tests, he's very clear and its straight forward. Tests are a hard but read and pay attention and you'll pass. Office hours can be very useful!
Tough class
I really liked his class. It is a pretty easy college course (for those who take the time to ACTUALLY STUDY). I don't get how people would not be able to pass this class. All the answers to his questions can be found easily from the material given. You earn the grade you deserve. Serious students could pass this class with flying colors.
Chill guy work hard and you can pull an A.
Not an easy A class. Exams are mostly written with very few multiple choice. Material comes from lectures. Take notes on stories and examples he gives in class. Don't rely on powerpoints, they're general and he posts them late. Read book mostly for weekly quizzes, don't need it for the exam. Start collections early and keep up with field notebook.
Tough teacher if you don't do the reading for his quizzes or exams. Doesn't give study guides so make sure you know your stuff. Make sure you go to every lab if you want to pass the class. His lectures are online so don't freak out if you miss a day. No homework except pre-labs which take like 10 minutes to do. Fantastic at explaining things.
Really great professor! His lectures are usually fun and funny. He is really good at explaining everything in a clear and understandable way. Definitely take him for the lab portion if you can. He makes the labs really fun and interesting. The tests are pretty difficult though, so definitely study. He drops your worst grade though, which is helpful
This guy is awesome. I recommend you to take this class over the summer tho, There's no quizzes and he doesn't take attendance, ONLY DURING THE SUMMER. I only showed up on exam days but I studied everyday at home because the notes are online, I managed to get a B without ever staying once for lecture. Lab is mandatory though. Final is optional too.
He's a great teacher. Super funny, quizzes you on the reading every week, clear syllabus with all tests and quizzes, easily passable if you pay attention to his powerpoints and understand the material. Also very supportive and gets to know his students! Take lab with him too
Great professor. Definitely a challenging class. Lab is super easy. Quizzes every week in lab and almost every week in lecture. Exams are pretty hard. He expects more than memorization, but a clear understanding of concepts. To pass this class it will take hours of studying the material and reading the book.
I didn't really like the class because he doesn't really care if you leave or not. I mean he is a smart teacher and he knows what he is talking about but I wish he was a little strict. The lab is really easy but it doesn't cover a lot of the exam problems. I wouldn't take the class again.
meh, Dimitratos is better. Seen him belittled people. Thinks his lecture is worth more than gold, so he gets pissed if you leave early. Yes on the first day he would say he doesn't care if you show up, but he does.
Collins is a really nice professor, however, the subject (Bio.) itself isn't. The class is hard and it requires an enormous amount of dedication, attention, and hours of reading. With the lectures, he'll call a name out randomly to answer a question, and with lab, he'll have a quiz everytime you meet.
Dr. Collins is hilarious , loves ants and he knows what he's talking about. BUT He goes off topic a lot and then throws info at you at the last moment. He takes his time grading assignments. There are several groups projects and several papers. Read the chapters and be ready for quizzes.
Dr. Collins is a kind guy. Unfortunately it feels that he attempts to make this basic ecology course more difficult to make himself feel good. Which wouldn't be a problem if it meant application problems and more research but instead it was a lot of memorizing details that didn't feel necessary. So be prepared to memorize some arbitrary things.
no just no. he makes ecology unnecessarily harder than it needs to be. the field trips are the worst (esp the desert one) and completely not needed. tests are hard because he grades super detailed and nitpicky. i regret taking this class. i feel like he doesn't want his students to do well. and his lectures are so boring.
Dr. Collins is a nice guy however, his lectures are very dull. The exams are poorly written and the material from the book and lecture do not add up in my opinion. His Exams are tuff and felt like they are more lecture based. Overall he expects to much from an introductory course. Got an A but would not recommend taking.
Collins really wants to see his students succeed. He can tell if you are putting in the effort needed for the class; however, if you do not show your effort he does not bother helping you as much. Collins is very eager to help mentor and guide you in the direction to a 4 year degree. Great guy and great class.
Dr Collins is really an amazing professor. He makes ecology seem interesting, loves joking with students and challenging you. He really mentored me and a few other students and truly wants to see us succeed. There's weekly quizzes, 3 exams, group project, 1 final. As long as you study, follow instructions, and do the work, the class is a breeze.
Ecology with prof. Collins is great. Hes passionate about the subject and overall super chill! His exams are not hard at all, I read over my lecture notes and got As on all of them. You do have to read the textbooks for the quizzes. The journals get tedious if you procrastinate, so keep track of entries throughout the semester and youll be good!
Super easy A! This professor is very helpful and tries to make his class as easy as possible. 3 exams and 8 quizzes. For the exams just study lecture notes and for the quizzes read the assigned readings. You dont need the book for the exams. You have collections and journal writings from the field trips we go on. Take this class if you need to!!
Prof. Collins is great at communicating the essentials of general ecology. Expect one quiz of 5 questions every week, he drops the 2 lowest scores. Exams are okay, everything comes from his slides. Also, expect lab reports and one research paper done in groups. Field trips are mandatory. I loved the combination of outdoors and indoors activities.
He is a nice teacher and tries to understand you. He may sometimes misunderstand your situation but he is an okay teacher. 5 exams in total as one of them may be dropped. Group activities are done weekly which count as assignments. Make sure to pay attention to lecture. Show up every time because participation counts. Use resources at your own risk
Nice professor. His lecture is very clear and easy to follow. Just need to pay attention in class and study a little bit outside the class to get an A. His test is reasonable and the projects are fun to do.
This class singlehandedly ruined my interest in biology. No study guides given, little response to criticism and an average test score of 40% which barely improved over the semester. I only passed the class because I understood the nonsensical questions. Classmates spending hours studying found themselves failing tests due to terrible questions.
He SEEMED nice... but had dense lectures, no review, no study guides, no extra credit, no flexibility for your situation (COVID? Havent met her.), and extremely hard BADLY written exams. Exams had maybe 0-4 As out of 80 students, class averages around 40%. Just stopped curving exams after withdrawal dates passed! If this is for general ed run.
Professor Collins was great he'll record lectures and will provide assignments/worksheets and good resources
He once said the beginning of the class attendance didnt matter. You paid for this class its on you. This was pre covid. 1st lecture of the week we took his quiz and after that more than half the class left to complete his out of class project. His ego got hurt and ranted on the next lecture. Drop students w 3 absents. Also gave us a 0 on quiz.
He was a good professor overall. Super heavy on lecture but little to no homework all semester. Took the time to explain things but could get pretty dull. Very fair when it came to grading though.
While some comments criticized his long boring lectures, I find that he is excellent at explaining concepts in multiple ways with easy and simple examples. Dr. Collins maintains good balance between soft humor and informative lectures and even has a small break in the middle of every class. The work load is consistent and not too overwhelming.
Some might consider his lectures to be long and dry but he does a very good job of explaining concepts to your understanding. He makes it clear what you need to focus on for the four exams you take in the term. He made it easy for me to grasp concepts and also gave good advice for studying. Attendance isn't mandatory but I don't recommend missing.
Prof Collins makes the class interesting, and teaches it very well. He makes class fun and the field trips are great! There is a quiz every week with 5 essay responses, which are all easily answered from the weekly textbook readings. If you answer substantially with 100-250 words per question you will get 100%, which doesn't end up being too much.
This class is so straightforward there is no excuse for you not to get an A. The test is just questions based off the lecture slides. DONT BOTHER READING THE TEXTBOOK. Know the lecture AND slides like the back of your hand -- memorize them if you have to. PAY ATTENTION TO THE LECTURE. Also prof is funny and kind. have fun in the desert!
I think Professor Collins is a nice person, and I appreciate his efforts in teaching the course. He mainly reads and explains the lecture material, which consists of over 200 slides per exam. It can be overwhelming to absorb so much information in one go. The class avr. for exams is around 60. Hw and reading quizzes don't boost up ur grade at all.
Very kind professor who knows his stuff. Good sense of humor. The class was very straightforward. Just know the info on the study guides he gives out, and you'll pass. Very understanding as well when needing to miss class and have to make up exams. He says the textbook was required, but you can get all the info you need from lectures.
Prof. Collins is a very nice, informative professor, I enjoyed his class! He answers all your questions & clarifies anything you don't understand. His exams can be tough, but he prepares you with everything you need to know, so the rest is up to you. Having an imbedded tutor was also very helpful! Shoutout to Bri!
I struggled a lot for this class. He doesn't give you enough materials to study and prepare for the exams. He doesn't give you any extra credits or bonus points. There was no embedded tutor, so you're on your own practically.
Dr. Collins is not what you expect. He seems very serious at first, but as the semester goes on he is actually pretty funny. He made the class enjoyable and you can tell he really is passionate about ecology (especially ants, he has discovered an ant species!). He made sure we learned a lot about the desert during our field trip and made it so fun!
