Professor Elzingas lectures just dont seem to be in depth enough to prepare you for the exams without reading or having a good discussion TA. I really loved hearing his stories/experiences though. This class had almost no homework- 80% of the overall grade was from 3 exams and the final was worth almost 50%. Head TA can really make or break class

Worst professor at UVA. Last semester, I contracted COVID-19 as an immunocompromised individual and lost my taste and smell for months, and was knocked in bed for weeks. I had to take an exam during my illness given that Elzinga gives no opportunities to make up exams. Elzinga should follow what he preaches because he did not show any sympathy.

Elzinga is an amazing professor who could properly teach economics to someone with no understanding of society. His lectures were insightful and fun, and his teachings were allowed me to fully understand some immensely complicated concepts.

I really enjoyed the lectures and Elzinga in general. I didn't like the way he simplified everything in lecture and then makes the tests so difficult. He says and I quote "the tests aren't meant to trick you" and then there are so many deliberately tricky questions, especially on the final. Good guy, terribly structured class.

Elzinga teaches the most popular course at UVA like a professional. Micro is interesting but the lectures are nothing spectacular, and he doesn't cover everything in class. Exams (most of your grade) are easy enough if you pay attention and go to discussion. Beware, though, Elzinga likes to talk politics even when he promises not to.

Elzinga is very knowledgeable about Econ, but his lectures are painfully boring and don't really go in-depth into the topics he tests on. If you get a good TA, his class isn't too bad, but if you have a bad one prepare to read your textbook and get study materials from other people. He's a nice guy, but not the best professor.

I took this class twice, once with Elzinga and once with Doyle. When I took it with Doyle, everything made sense and was so much easier/far less time-consuming. I got an A+ in the class and learned a lot. Elzinga's final included references and questions/math that were never addressed/taught in class. Do yourself a favor and take it with Doyle.

Elzinga was a dry speaker, but a very caring man; You could tell he loved teaching, but staying awake was very hard. The material he teaches is very difficult and you better have a good TA to re-explain the material for you because you will definitely need it. Each textbook chapter took me at least 2 hours or more to read, they were so long.

Elzinga is a legend at UVA. He is clearly experienced in economics, and his jokes in lectures always land. HOWEVER, I would not recommend this class to anyone who is not required to take it. The lectures are useless and the tests are written in riddles. He preaches principles only and then makes super-specific test questions. Not worth it at all.

Elzinga is caring but beyond that, I don't see any redeeming qualities about this class. The final is worth either 50 or 100% of your grade and doesn't even test conceptual knowledge but instead obscure details from somewhere in a 500 page textbook. The lectures are dry and pointless also. I am considering changing my major because of this class.

If there's one mistake you're going to make at UVA that you will regret forever, it's taking ECON 2010 with Elzinga. It is RIDICULOUS how much of a difference there is between taking it with Elzinga vs Doyle/Santugini. Elzinga's final is impossible, has terms that never were taught, and his two midterms are graded so partially it's hilarious.

Lectures are interesting, but painfully useless. The two midterm exams are difficult, but doable. Good luck getting above a 75 on your final exam. If you get a good TA, you might make it out alive. If you get an average or subpar TA, drop and take ECON2010 with someone else. Do not take it with Elzinga if you care about your GPA at all.

I would not recommend this class with Elzinga to anybody. In terms of "the experience of taking econ with elzinga," highly overrated. No one cares about the "experience" if it means your GPA tanks.

Attending his lectures is not enough to do well on the exams, so you must read the assigned chapters from the textbook as well. Also, watch his Econ Minutes as soon as they are released because they're time-sensitive, and you'll miss out on easy points on the exams if you forget. Overall, he's a funny professor but a tough grader.

Taking Econ 201 with Elzinga is like a right of passage at UVA. If you take the class seriously, do some reading, go to lectures, and study, you will be fine and get a good grade. It isn't the easiest class ever, but if you put in a little bit of time before the exams you will be fine.

Amazing teacher - easy to drift off during lectures tho. The final can kick your ass if you're not careful. Don't rely on the dutch knockout. Getting a solid grade is easy so long as you read + pay attention + work w/ your TA. You'll do well. The curve at the end is insane - this could help if you're not doing well. HARD to get an A/A+

Professor Elzinga is a good professor, but what makes or breaks your grade in the class is a TA. My TA was great; he provided all the materials the discussion section needed to succeed in the class, which is not what some other TAs do. The final is a bit annoying since there are a lot of niche textbook questions that we didn't go over in lectures.

The Lectures were not too bad but went off topic very often and I had a hard time keeping focused in the lectures. They became so mundane to the point where I didn't even need to come to class. This class all depends on the quality of your TA. My TA was not very helpful and gave us no practice problems to do. This class is dependent on the TA.

Elzinga, while very well-known and has been at UVA for an eternity, would blab about things that weren't specifically related to the content. He kept talking about setting us up for the future/how it's important to be knowledgeable in economics but he was so off-topic and boring. He seemed like a super nice guy but maybe not the best to understand.
