I recommended that this course be omitted after I took it--I still couldn't tell you what I learned.
he was awful..reminds me of a Viking..no clue what i learned in education of philosophy.
Did not give us any graded work and no guidence only that we did not know how to think. His opinions were the only right ones in the class complete IDIOT
His Philosophy of Ed class was terrible. He makes you think he is going to take attendance at the beginning of the semester, but he never does. I got a C and was pleased since I only attended the class 50% of the time.
I'm taking this class now and i still have no idea what's going on. We go in circles, and the right answer is his answer.

Prof Gatzke taught a class at my school, UNH Spring 03. This class made my head hurt and all we did was go in circles. On the upside, we didn't have any exams, we had a series of essays. I offically hate Philosophy.
This class was apparently about nothing. But it took a long time to make that clear. Unfair grading.
what the hell did i just learn? his opinion. the only thing that matters to him. very unfair class and a total turn off to philosophy
he did not explain anything in the class. It was so confused, never understood philosophy of education. If you take him as professor, believe me he could help you out , but mostly his opinion matter the most. I forget he will fail you and not feel bad.
I found this class relatively easy, but people who have no experience with independent thinking will have difficulty here. This is not a simple memorize-from-textbook course. You actually have to be willing to THINK.

the was the worst class i have ever taken. not only did i NOT learn anything, it made my head hurt to sit there. please save yourself and never take this course with this instructor.
I took his horrible class 4 or 5 years ago, thinking I was getting Prof. Lowe. Unfortunately, that semester, she became dept head and he stepped down to professor. He only cares about what he thinks is right. What a useless class. DON'T TAKE HIM!!
This class was the biggest waste of money and it shows no purpose, we did not learn about philosophers of education the only think we did was ancient stuff. We did go in too many circles, got headaches every class I went to and seen no purpose.
TERRIBLE
If he spoke one more time about "Webster the Wonderdog", I think I would vomit. A total and complete waste of money, unfair grading, opinionated, obnoxious. He referred to having tenure so he couldn't be fired at least once during each class.

This class was a challenge, but it is college, come on people! There is never any real homework, there's not book, no tests, no quizes. If you show up for the class discussions and can make sense of Plato, you'll be fine. The lectures were interesting and the time seemed to go by quite quickly.
I think that gauging my eyes out w/ my pencil would have hurt less than sitting through this man's class. I didn't learn one thing and would skip class all the time b/c I couldn't stand to sit through meaninglessness that I will never use in life. What a terrible waste of time. Grading is unfair.
This class is very easy and as long as you are a decent writer, you will do fine. I dont think the information is relevant He also glorifies atheism - religous people beware you may get offended
Gatzke is very difficult to understand if you don't try. He makes students actually think, and that seems to unnerve people so much they hate his class. Talking to him is interesting but on the downside he takes a long time to say anything and his class moves very slowly. Also, easy A.
This is the absolute worst class I have ever taken....He is the worst teacher I've ever had...His papers are hard...They don't make sense....Very hard to understand and very boring...Do not take this course....You'll feel like killing yourself
shouldn't take him at all. very abstract and no matter what u say it's not good enough for him and is a hard grader.
good luck! Class discussions very boring and wondered what I was doing there...did ok in his class..tough critic...but not as bad as some may think..still have no idea what we talked about..the lectures went on and on and on....it felt like it never stopped!!!!
WEIRD, horrible, always felt lost, boring and at times highly offensive, does not care what anyone thinks of the words coming out of his mouth, I never had any idea of how I was doing in the class, I do not recommend this professor
Prof Gatzke is an interesting man who loves what he does.He is refreshing and says what he thinks. He uses Webster the wonder dog to make a point. He was very helpful.Yes he is different but after all this is Philosophy and this is how Philosophy is.He is a fair grader and just wants his students to think. He does want his students to succeed.Enjoy.!
This guy is the man. He's incredibly cynical, opinionated, and self absorbed. BUT, if you have the ability to entertain two diametrically opposite thoughts at the same time, you'll learn a ton. Otherwise, you'll come out either hating him or thinking he's full of crap. Listen to him though & you'll realize how little you actually know.
This teacher makes you think and stimulates you to view things from a different point. You want to talk about reality? Take this class.
He is an awful grader. When you participate in class your answer is never right. He is constantly contridicting himself and he does not make much sense. I feel like I learned nothing in his class.
his classes may not make sense at first, but really listen. there is something there to learn. he thinks hes socrotes, constantly leading stuff out of you.
He has to be, without a doubt, the worst professor that I have ever had. He is a tough grader, but that is not why I'm giving him such a bad rating. Instead of teaching logic, he wastes the classes time ranting on about how smart he is and how dumb everyone else is. Every anwser you give is wrong and will constantly belittle the students. STAY AWAY
do NOT take him. he is the WORST professor I have ever had.
He is a really good teacher if you are prepared to think. He actually tries to get the student to figure things out for themselves. This class requires thinking. If you don't want to think then don't take it. If you are prepared to think you will do well.
I do not recommend this prof. Unless you are a philosophy major and think as abstractly as he does, you will struggle to follow along. You have to be in every class in order to keep up with discussion, you never know how your final grade will look until you see it. Horribly boring and annoying.
He is a good teacher. Everyone thinks he is horrible but that is because they go to class and expect to just sit there. If you actually participate, and get involved in the discussions, he will actually be nice to you. And if you need help, go for extra help, he really tries to lead you in a right direction.
horrible i must say very hard not very helpful, we had 4 papers the entire semester and 3/4 of the class failed every one, still ended up with a C+ in the class, but just don't take, if you take him you are bound to fail unless you like Philosophy, wants you to figure out the answer instead after like 10 minutes just giving us the answer, stay away
Great professor. Really knows his material, and a great class if you want to learn something not only about philosophy but life in general. I would definately recommend him.
This professor is very passionate about his beliefs, he will challenge you, and I respect that.
terrible, had him b/c the teacher took a leave of absence, ruins your GPA, grades hard, expects you to know everything, instead of giving you the answer he will make you sit their like an idiot for 10 minutes until you figure it out, don't take him for any class, not unless you must but it wont be pretty, let me tell you
Very arrogant. Product of the 1960's college class whom will not teach educational philosophy as seems to have the "hippie" attitude of fighting "the Man" since he does not mention any 20th century philosophers as ought to be protocol for EDU Professors, just rambles nonsensical self thought lunacy, avoid at all costs for you future teachers
oh yeah one more thing, you are not Socrates or Plato, they were geniuses in their time and up to today, give up on your futile attempt to even emulate their school of thought as your proud virtue is crippling to their eyes
TAKE GOOD NOTES, DON'T MISS A CLASS(ALOT IF IMPORTANT INFO EACH CLASS), AND YOU WILL DO FINE. LISTEN TO WHAT HE SAYS WHETHER YOU AGREE OR NOT IS OF NO CONSEQUENCE (HE IS THE TEACHER). WRITE YOUR ESSAYS AND NO MATTER HOW UNRELATED THE TOPIC MAY SEEM FIND A WAY TO RELATE IT TO YOUR NOTES. U LISTEN TO ME YOU HAVE YOUR A.
He isn't that bad. I find him to be very interesting. He makes you produce your own thoughts, something that I know many of us are not used to doing. We don't just parrot back information. For the first time I believe I am actually doing solid thinking about life and how it works.
Professor Gatzke's class makes you think. Don't miss any classes, because when y ou write papers you have to tie everything together. Sometimes you may have no idea what he's talking about, but stick it out. The papers are hard, but he's willing to look at drafts and give some sort of feedback.
Avoid this professor if at all possible..i went to all the classes, took all the notes and still got a B- in the class. He is a ridiculously hard grader, and expects everyone to think like him.
terrible, do not take, ruined everything, he ruins your day, gpa and the essays are impossible, half the class fought with him everyday and i believe he failed them, just always agree with him and relate essays to your notes and if your lucky you might get a C, just do not take
Dr. Gatzke is worth every bit of the work he'll put you through. You'll be forced to use critical thinking and informal logic in your reasoning, know your fallacies and how to correct them, and just generally think beyond the surface in a lot of ways. One course with him, and you'll be drastically improved in math and science, too.
Gatzke is awful, and I rarely say that about a professor. We didn't get a syllabus and there were no books assigned for the class. How can you have a class without a syllabus? No one in my class got higher than a D on their papers. Ridiculous.
He is confusing to listen to sometimes, but he pushes you to think outside the box. Attendance isn't mandatory, but as long as you go pretty often and pay attention, you'll do okay. he assigned only 3 papers and will look them over in advance if you need help. hes a weird guy, but not as bad as everyone makes him out to be. i got an A in the class
Worst professor ever! Never, never, never take him...unless you want to feel stupid, have your gpa ruined, and contemplate how awful it is for some people to have tenure.
He is the worst professor I have ever had. He makes no sense and criticizes every department but philosophy. Some people say college classes should be hard, but let's face it, this is an introductory course. If your name is Socrates or Plato, you'll do well in this class. But, if you aren't a philosopher, your GPA is screwed.
eek thought i was going to die but just go to class and take notes on what he outlines on the board. you wont get a good grade unless you know how to write a good paper, which lets face it, everyone should know how to do by now. very hard to keep up with what hes saying because he gets off topic and then returns to what he was saying.
he is actually nice, helpful, and understanding. if you just listen to what he says and apply it in your papers you will do well.
he is not at all as bad as everyone is making him out to be. he is actually nice, helpful, and understanding. it is not so hard to listen to what he has to say, and apply it in your papers.
No seriously. Don't.
Prof. Gatzke is a very intelligent man. Try arguing with him and you will quickly realize that you have no argument at all. Didn't do too well in his course but i have begun to analyze things on a whole new level. If you're an airhead don't expect to pass.
On first day of class he brags about how bad his rating is on this site. This is a bad sign. It goes down here from there. He has an amused contempt for anything but philosophy and isn't afraid to show it. Class has no focus. Three weeks in all we've done is argued over how to define philosophy.
He will probobly read this to you on the first day of class. I think he means well, but HIS philosophy on teaching is bad. Very bad. Throughout the semester I had hope that by the end I would see what all this suffering was about, like an educational breakthrough- never happened. Couldn't tell u what this class was about accept that he has a huge e
A lot of people say that if you didnt enjoy this class its because you dont care to THINK. I do not agree. I am an extremely deep thinker and I still found this class very disappointing. Gatzke, though I respect your attempts, you're way too discouraging.
gatzke was awful. he wants you to use your own thoughts, but then when you say your own thoughts in a paper, he says your wrong. i still believe he didn't read half of one of my papers, and then wrote i don't think so on a huge part of it. such a useless and annoying class to go to
Probably the best class i will ever take in college.Interesting, challanging, useful. He dosent want you just to answer his questions, but wants you to come up with the questions yourself. As a Christian it was challenging but actually strengthened my faith.Dont be afraid you ask questions never asked before and dont be afraid not to have the answers
He is a really nice man, but he goes on and on forever about useless stuff. I dreaded going to class because it was sooooo boring. I sometimes imagined myself being hit by a car as I daydreamed in class. I think he just needs to spice up his teaching style and allow some group time/team projects etc. Not just sitting there day after day after...
Do not take this class or any other class with this guy. 3 weeks into class and I have not leanred or understood anything. No books, no syllabus, nothing. He says one thing and then says maybe he's wrong. He makes no sense and talks in circles. I want to die every class. Don't do it to yourself.
This was a great class. The purpose is to get us thinking about what education is/should be. We worked out everything in class and wrote a few papers. People looking to be handed answers should avoid. This course is for "students" not "pupils". I would highly recommend him because he treats the class like a college level class.
There's a great deal of thinking involved, but all for good reason. He's helpful in pushing you into the right direction when asking a question so, that way, you can come up with the answer for yourself. He is one of the few teacher that would rather have the students think than simply take in and regurgitate useless information.
I took Professor Gatzke last fall and absolutely LOVED his class. Maybe if the students who whined about him all semester put effort into actually listening to him, rather than complain then they would actually have learned something. Advice, listen to him. Don't like what he has to say? Tell him. It's philosophy people. What did you expect?
Gatzke is a great teacker, but difinitely not for everyone. Actually he's really not agreat teacher, but you can still learn a lot from him if you give it a shot and engage yourself in the material and way of thinking. Class participation is absolutely necessary to get anything out of this class.
While the class was OK(Philosophy is not my cup of tea), Gatzke is the most understanding professor I have ever dealt with. I missed the last week of his summer course because of personal reasons and he allowed me to make up the work MONTHS after the class was over, and changed my grade. He is very approachable and overall an extremely nice guy.
I HATE philosophy with a passion. The freshman are SO lucky that they are NOT FORCED to take philosophy!!I did learn some interesting things, but it was in NO way the philosophy of education. He gives everyone a B- no matter how poorly u do on the papers (there are 3), if u get higher he will give u the grade you earned. A tip: he loves history
I have gotten nothing out of this class. He says that if you come with an open mind, you will learn something. He is lying. He talks in circles and when you do volunteer in class, no matter what you say, he tells you you are wrong. He doesn't allow other opinions than his own, and it's hard to participate when you're always made to feel stupid.
Very nice guy. Difficult and you will certainly fail if your trying to slack off. But if you take initiative to talk to him and go for help you'll certainly pass. He accepts rough drafts so make sure to send him one for every essay or your grade will suffer. A good teacher to take if you like philosophy and want to be challenged.
Gatzke is the worst teacher I have ever had in my entire life. The class goes by so slow as his lectures go on and on...really in circles. He never finsihes anything he starts discussing. He is just really boring. I did not learn one thing in his class all semester...Like I said worst teacher ever! SCSU needs to let Gatzke retire or just fire him!
Everyone receives a B- or lower is a LIE. When I took this class I got an A. Not because I brown nosed but because I actually went against everything he said. Listen to what he says and stat your opinion. Take notes! If you take notes you'll be fine when you write your paper. Just reiterate all he has said and put in your own opinion.
There is NO book. He is HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!! DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! IF YOU GET STUCK WITH HIM...GET OUT ASAP!
One of the best teachers I have ever taken. If your reading this take my advice! don't just write him off because people say he's hard. Those are the people who expect not to put in effort for a grade. He always wants to help, take notes, review your previous comments, & honestly just try in his class! put in all the effort you can! its worth it!
I attended every class and I can safely say I learned nothing. He rambles forever. If you try to participate in class he will say you're wrong and correct you with exactly what you said just with slightly different wording. I had high hopes for him when the class began but I found him to be a conceited and overall just not fit for teaching.
horrible class, horrible professor. He likes to hear himself talk and only lets other people speak so that he can disagree with them. Attended every class and attempted to participate only to end up with bad grade.
Terrible. Every good comment here is a lie. He teaches just to hear himself talk. He juat wants a captiv audience of people who know less about philosophy than him. Then, instead of teaching you, he acts like you should already know it.
Gatzke is a great, inspirational teacher. Take his class
Terrible teacher. Did not explain assignments well. There was only three papers the whole semester but all on the exact same subject. Sitting through the class was torture, so boring and he's so full of himself that he's annoying to listen to.
Extremely smart guy with many modern day topics, not the clearest with his notes on board though.
He is a great guy but a not so great professor. Doesn't agree with the modern-day grading criteria so his grading is a bit harsh and confusing. His topics are interesting and he is extremely thoughtful. May come across as offensive but do not take it personally.
He was too full of himself.
literally the worst professor I ever had. expects you to already know the material, talks about the same subject all semester, believes only his way is the right way, doesn't let you have an opinion not cares about it, doesn't update grades, please save yourself the stress of worrying if you're gonna pass his class and DO NOT take him.
Students should feel lucky to have him. You can't mindlessly memorize material and regurgitate it back. He wants you to learn formal logic which is extremely relevant and useful (Exactly why we studied Socrates the entire semester. ) I aced his class because I raised my hand and knew my way around a truth table. Tip: educate yourself.
Prof Gatzke's class was a complete waste my time. Class consists of him standing in front of the room rambling on about topics that don't have anything to do with class. He asks questions and is never happy with any of the answers people give. On top of that his opinion is the only one that matters. I strongly suggest everyone avoids his classes.
The most infuriating teacher ever. Nothing he says makes sense. DONT TAKE HIS CLASS. FULL OF HIMSELF ARROGANT AND RUDE
I loved taking this class. There's no textbook, no attendance, and no tests or quizzes; just a few papers. This class really made me think and I actually enjoyed participating in class. I felt like I could say anything and that my opinion was heard. Gatzke is kind, funny and wants to help. I only wish your grade wasn't decided by so few assignments
This professor is literally only for himself, so full of himself and he knows it ! Saying I dont care who I am , Im too old to change and have very thick skin . Only talks about himself and how hes so great . Very frustrating and very rude. I would of never taken this course if I knew who he was . Dont take it .
Throughout the whole semester I felt like we were talking about the SAME topic yet no one in class, including me, ever grasped the subject at all at one point we all did so bad at an assignment we all had to redo it. Would not recommend
He does not take attendance, but if you do not show up you will not pass because he teaches by lectures. This class was a struggle to get through, but in the end it all comes together.
For starters, he gave the WHOLE Class a C for a midterm grade. Number one, There was no assignments all semester, no attendance, no tests or quizzes. The reason for giving everyone a C... because its an average place holder. DONT DO NOT take him you will be stressed and annoyed. Nothing makes sense all he does is ramble on and on.
Will talk about literally anything BUT the philosophy of education. He's just a boomer trying to tell the kids that they have it easy. I don't recommend taking this class with him. Kind of just a waste of time. SOOOOOO disorganized.
I'm falling asleep. You will too. Currently in one of his lectures; my friends have fallen asleep. With atmosphere growing dark and barren, I've decided to use my dread-full final hours to give humanity a new chance at prosperity. Look, If you are seriously passionate about philosophy, take his class. If it's a reqirement ,don't. Seriously. Like Fr
He doesn't try to help you understand any of the material and will get annoyed when you don't magically understand. Doesn't give enough grades and relies on papers. The way he grades is insanely harsh and has no sympathy. The result of us moving online for the pandemic was him giving us too much work with not enough explanation. DONT TAKE HIS CLASS
I honestly had no clue what he was talking about ever. He was a nice guy, but he was so smart and went on tangents that I couldn't keep up with. Not what I expected from this class, there wasn't much work either, it was just so confusing. If you asked a question he came back at you with one that made you think. Stereotypical of PHI but it was weird
was personally hard to understand and I had a rough time getting through his lectures. He is a tough grader and it felt like he was giving me a bad grade because I spoke my opinion on the topic.
the hardest grader i have ever had you do not have to show up he stopped taking attendance after the second class. do not take this class it is a waste of time no structure
Gatzke is horrible! He grades papers based off his own opinion/ whether he agrees or disagrees with you. I have received grades that are way to low and grades I normally would not get in a writing course or on papers based on things I have seen. Not many assignments which kills your grade. Please do not take this class, you will regret it.
i am giving this class a 4 for difficulty because it is very confusing. Thought it would be interesting to learn about death and the meaning of life, but watched movies that had death in it and went into depth about Greek philosopher's thoughts on life. The workload was light, but again hard to understand. Sadly, I did not learn a single thing.
This professor really wasnt my favorite. To start, I couldnt even stay awake during the first class. All he does is go on about Feinstein and never has any lesson plans. He assigns very little assignments and does not believe it grades. I was practically pulling my hair out when trying to complete his assignments. All I have to say is good luck.
Professor Gatzke was nice. He talked a lot and sometimes about things that were unrelated and which would get aggravating. Sometimes he is hard to follow during class time. But when you give your opinion he is always polite about how he asks. He is a tough grader when it comes to papers.
The class I took was a W course and there were only 4 essays throughout the semester. The work load was really light and those were the only assignments all semester. He is a pretty tough grader but he lets you revise your essays based on his comments. He talks a lot in his classes but the conversation is helpful to your essay topics.
Not gonna lie the guy is kinda boring but interesting at the same time. Come to class listen to what he has to say, you might have a input. Papers are easy just write whats on your mind and what you think. Other than that the class is easy.
I am a Senior Philosophy student who has earned an A in every single Philosophy course I have taken - all besides Gatzke's Phi 100 course back in Freshman year. There is absolutely zero structure, and no semblance of a reliable metric for grading papers. This guy thinks he is Socrates reincarnated, and has an ego to match. Avoid him at all costs.
Professor Gatzke is very different than other professors. He does not rely on a textbook and focuses more on class progress. He finds different ways to help his students understand the material, but since there is no textbook any concepts are learned in class and based on feedback from assignments. Communicate with him if you are having trouble.
An awful teacher, who rambles all class.
This guy started the first class by telling us he wasn't going to follow the curriculum. No textbook and very few grades. The first 6 classes were filled with him trying to get us to answer a single question and basically read his mind. Seems like a nice dude but would not recommend.
This is the worst college professor I have ever had. In fact, this professor was so incompetent that when I presented what he was teaching to the dean, SCSU themselves gave me special permission to do a late drop the class all the way in November. There is no structure to the class and all he does is arbitrarily complain about nonsense. Avoid him!
You are basically blind at sea with this guy. The way he grades is so unpredictable (It's like he pulls grades out of a hat) and because of that, it is impossible to prepare for his class. I'm not even convinced he ever really knew what he was talking about. It was supposed to be a philosophy class most of what he talked about structure of language
Class is a tough watch really wanted to sleep.
took this class in 2022, AVOID AT ALL COSTS! he rambles about anything and we spent classes trying to figure out what he had in his mind. he pulled out grades from a hat. if the paper wasn't to his liking or what he had in mind, he would put random things on your paper about how something was wrong or if you didn't get what he wanted.
