He is OK. Seems very unorganized.
although you have no idea what he is ever talking about his exams are take him and there is only 2! midterm and final....he also encourages you to work in groups and you can use the internet so it really isnt that hard...he takes attendance by assigning homework or just giving quizes when ever
He's a really smart guy, he just isn't good at teaching big lecture classes that he doesn't care about. get him for a higher level history class and it'll be better. Sometimes it seems like he doesn't really know where it is. Just go to class and you can **** through.
I really dislike this man. He doesn't want to be teaching this class, and it's obvious. Assigns tons of homework, essays and essays and essays. His class was boring, to boot. I don't feel like I learned anything from this class.
It seemed to just about everyone in attendance, that his lecture stood only for the sake of entertaining himself, whereas the lay person is left without the slightest inclination of what is expected from them. However: a very knowledgible professor, he simply fails to express himself in a manner in which he can be understood.
He knows his stuff but it's just really boring and I can barely stay awake in his class. He speaks over groups when they're presenting and it's frustrating.
Terrible. You never understand him and he's a really tough teacher. He interrupts you when you speak and is just really unreceptive to your ideas.
Ok so it is impossible to understand him, nothing but reading novels and writing papers on them. Watch alot of old movies about culture. Grades the papers terribly. He is more or less a bad teacher, I mean he is a very smart guy that knows his stuff, but doesnt know or care about explaining it in everyday english.. chose another course
This guy drove me insane. He's clearly smart and knows his stuff, but isn't good for a basic level history class. He assigns a ton of homework. The tests are take home, but he writes questions so unclearly I can never tell what he is asking. He'd be great in an upper level class, but for 150 he is not the person you want.
HIST150: Awful teacher. GO TO THE STUDY SESSIONS PROVIDED BY TA'S. They give you the answers for the homework; you will not be able to do it yourself, and get an A in the class! He knows his stuff, but is hard to understand, and boring. Don't take notes-the midterm and final are take home, and there are studdy sessions for them.
Read a book or write 4 page essay every week. 90 percent of lecuters do not pertain to what you will use on essays. Below average teacher. Homework is way to time consuming for an elective.
Assigns homework and readings that don't make any sense at all. He refers to his own book in third person. Only take this class if you are looking for an excuse to not come to lecture.
He doesn't explain his book ever. He also refers to his book in third person even though he didn't write hardly anything in it. He always uses the word here like it's a punctuation to everything. His paper over his book [which he uses in grad classes] isn't explained ever. If you can take another prof.
Horrible teacher. Never explains anything, lectures are completely useless and boring, the movies he shows are even worse. We only had to buy the book, which is really aimed towards upper level classes, because he edited it. The essay is impossible, and is due the Monday after spring break. Get a new professor if possible.
If ~90% of the students get a D on the first test (thank God for the curve he so graciously allowed us to have) and everyone has to attend study sessions to have any chance at all of passing, you're doing something wrong. We're using the book he edited. No surprise there. We had to buy two others, but we've never touched either of them yet.
Hall is completely useless. He makes you buy a book he edited. He uses the word "here" as a punctuation mark. Essentially, he can't teach, he is horrible at giving notes, his tests are impossible, and the homework he assigns has nothing to do with the exams. Avoid him if you can, if not, be ready to take an F.
While he might have a great amount of experience in the field, his teaching doesn't prove so impressive. His third person references to his text that he required us to buy are frustrating, and it's impossible to follow him in class lectures. I just listen for small info bits to use in the papers & then ignore the rest, but I don't recommend him!
He does a good job.
Avoid this prof if possible. He has a mid-term and final each which are 25% of your grade and a 5 page paper that is 15% of your grade from the book he edited. The paper is terrible and almost everyone gets a C. The mid-term and final aren't easy despite being 100 questions and take-home. Hes boring, uses too large of a vocabulary, I could go on.
The way he talks makes it extremely hard to understand anything he says!
Dr. Hall's class is pretty much impossible to pass. He makes you by this useless book that no one understand just because he edited it; he is so full of himself. The homework doesn't make any sense and none of it is ever on the test. I ended up dropping it before I got an F. If you have this teacher I recommend dropping before your GPA is done for.
Really not that bad. Class is boring but it's important to go because when he notices people missing he gives quizzes over EASY stuff or he'll just give you the answers. Go to the T.A. sessions and get a group together for the midterm and final and you will easily get a good grade.
E-mail is his number one way to contact you. His assignments given aren't clear and he leaves you stressed and with the feeling that you aren't prepared for his class.
the work is hard
For a core class, this professor is rediculous. He assumes that everyone already knows what he's talking about as if we all have PhDs like he does. His take-home tests and homework are impossible, no matter how much you study. I spent at least 90 minutes on ten questions and I still get Cs! If you're in this class, get out!

This man is absolutely AWFUL! For the love of god, do NOT take his core level class. He expects you to do things that most upper level history classes don't have to do. His class is a complete waste of your time because everything he talks about in class has NOTHING to do with what is on the homework. Worst teacher EVER.
I have taken 200, 300 and 400 level history classes with a number of profs at BSU.... This is by far the worst. He uses no textbook, uses films and novels to "teach" non-western cultures. five 4-page papers analyzing cultures we know nothing about so you don't have any fact for papers and get Cs
I was in both his 150 and 198 classes. Never again. He was the worst professor I've ever had the misfortune to get stuck with. The first day of class it seems easy for 150, Take home final & midterm, multiple choice homeworks. They they have nothing to do with what he says in class and it takes forever to do them.DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS! ANY OF THEM!
I hated everything about this class. The lectures did not relate to the homework or tests. I survived the class by going to the teaching assistants' study sessions where they basically fed us the answers to the homework and take home final. But you probably won't have those TAs so don't sign up for Hall
This was the most awful class I had ever attended! Nothing he said ever made sense and his lectures were so incredibly boring. His homework, tests, and papers are impossible! And to top it all off he is RUDE! I had emailed him to clarify an assignment and all I got back was a rude, short answer saying I should listen and attend class. I dropped it!
Loves to schedule absurd amounts of homework, but not tell the class. Lectures don't have anything to do with books readings, he jumps from time period to time period in no order whatsoever, he doesn't answer questions clearly, he makes you read his horribly edited book...There's just nothing nice to say about him. If you have him, you WILL fail.
my wife took his 150 class the semester before i had my 152 150 is supposed to be easy as hell and general knowledge required of all majors IT WAS THE EXACT SAME CLASS he changed nothing tests homework everything plus he was extremly rude when I asked for any help everything is screwed up on his blackboard /good historian BAD! teacher
This professor is awful! His homework assignments are nearly impossible--it usually took me around an hour to answer ten multiple choice questions and I still got Cs on most of them. His exams are just as bad. Seriously, this class was more difficult than my level-400 classes.
Class was very difficult. He was unclear in homework assignments and they were hard to do. We did them in groups and still received low grades. His tests were take home and we did them in groups and used the book, notes, and internet and still the average was a 70%
Conceited and rude. Primarily used the textbook he edited, which was comically enough difficult to read and irrelevant to his lectures. Homework assignments rarely corresponded with book work or lectures. Overall, he made the content unnecessarily difficult to follow through a lack of organization and poor communication skills.
Nice man, but requires too much work for an intro level class. I would advise you to drop the course if you have too many other responsibilities--the homework levels are very high and frequent. If you can't afford to drop/switch profs, make sure you go to the study sessions that the TAs offer. They know their stuff, or at least have the answer key
He does not take attendance however he randomly has quizzes at the end of class over the notes from that day. Those quizzes are nearly impossible, even if you paid attention.
confused and confusing
He doesn't make any sense. He expects too much for a 100 level class. And this is Western Civ, in which he never uses the book required for the course, which is about western civilization. Instead we use a book he edited that is entitled "The Growth of NON-Western Cities."
His lectures are hard to follow, with inconsistent homework assignments with random quizzes at the end of each lecture. He also expects 100 level class to be experts on History, making an easy class unnecessarily hard.
The class is rather hard and EXTREMELY uninteresting. He speaks using large and complex words. He lectures to us like we are experts on history. Not to mention the time period of history we study is boring. The only way I'm getting through this class is by the help of the TAs. If you can..avoid taking this class with him as your prof! :)
Awful professor. His quizzes are nearly impossible, even if you take notes, he doesn't cover a lot of info he puts on the final and mid-term, and the only way to get a good grade is get free answers on homework from TAs, which means if you can't make it to their sessions you're screwed. I'm honors, I should not get a C in 100 level history.
Bad professor. Go to the TAs study sessions! They will help you through your homework assignments, midterm, & final & you'll leave with all the correct answers (which will almost be impossible if you do it on your own). His term paper over the book he edited himself is the hardest part of the class. Go to the study sessions & you'll get an A or A-.
I have only had class since the beginning of the year and he is already impossible to follow, rambles on, impossible to understand and is a horrible teacher. I plan on using the study sessions to pass.
Literally the worst teacher ever. I would have dropped it right away but I attended the SI sessions and they give you all of the answers to all of the hw, mid term, and final. I am not positive if every SI teacher would do that so just incase DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! Don't buy the books either it was a waste of money.
He is such an awful teacher. He is really smart but just impossible to learn from. And you can't use the book because he wrote it.. On the bright side with the TA's, I have a 100% in the class because they give you answers to everything including in-class assignments, tests, midterm and final. I haven't read a word all semester!
Likable guy but very high expectations. He expects that every student is a historian. Lectures are very hard to follow. I would have failed this class if it were not for the TA's
Hall genuinely means well. He is a nice guy. But he teaches as if you are a history major. He lessons are not clear. 90% of the class sits on Facebook and Pinterest. Attendance is mandatory because he gives in class quizzes, but gives the answers at the end. The TA's give all the answers to everything. I have a 100% in the class.
The classes may be boring as he simply lectures or shows videos the whole time but you can tell he's passionate about the subject and he throws some humor in. If you attend the TA study sessions it should be one of your easiest grades and the final and midterm are take home and are also gone over at the sessions. Without the sessions it's hard!
This is the easiest class you will ever take. Attendance is required, but attention is not. If you go to the study session you will get all the answers (ABCD) for the homework and extra credit. It is impossible to fail this class unless you skip every day. Also do not buy the text books.
Easiest A! I never went to this class. He doesn't do attendance but he would do random in class quizzes but he would give you the answers to them. Make sure you GO TO THE TA SESSIONS, they give you the answers to the homework, midterm and final! Other than that just go to his class and sit on interest the whole time. EASY A! DO NOT BUY THE BOOKS!
SO BORING! And when you pass in your quizzes or homework you wonder if it is actually going to make it to him. I was missing a few assignments that I did an when I e-mailed him about it he never replied and I approached him in class and he shrugged me off. I got a B because of that. Other than that so easy! Don't take notes.
Terrible teacher. Treats females unfairly. Speaks over groups when presenting. Doesn't explain subjects, papers, etc. Extremely boring. DO NOT RECOMMEND
I had him for 370, which was ok, but in 371 he was not really involved or helpful at all. Compared to all my other online classes this one sucked. I'm retaking it and he has changed it up a bit, but the first time it was just horrible. In class he is monotone. Do not take him.
TERRIBLE TEACHER. Only talks about the places in the world that he has been to. Vague on paper assignments. Expects you to know EVERYTHING about the cultures that you read about in the 7 books that are read in the class. Seriously, just avoid him at all costs because he just talks forever and is a terrible instructor.
I don't understand all the flak this guy gets. He's a really good guy and he's really smart too. Sometimes he'll interject funny stories, like out-drinking a Japanese bartender. No tests, just four papers. He lets you turn in rough draft for comment. The books are actually interesting and I suggest you read them, makes the papers much easier.
This class is based on novels so get ready to read! You do a lot of group projects and four assessment papers over the novels. He is a very tough grader but he makes his class interesting.
I never knew I could be so bored and depressed at the same time. Last week we watched a video on Iran and we saw a woman get shot in the head. Every novel is about some fictional characters dying and staving. All of the time spent reading and writing for this class took a lot of time away from my major. Just avoid this class.
Quite difficult, not fun: You will need to read 400pgs per month. There is one paper due every month that is based on two novels you've read. These papers are long, detailed, and time-consuming. It takes even those who get Cs at least 6 hours to write. However, he does let you turn in rough drafts with every change needed to get an A.
I took him in the summer. Only Recommend for summer history because you don't have to show up to class. Also, he has assignments due each week, but he gives you all the answers. Don't take notes and don't buy the book, waste of money!!!!!
I wouldn't recommend this class on my worst enemy. DO NOT take this class. It's the hardest class I've ever taken. You read about 100+ pages a week and have homework assignments every day. Save yourself the time and don't take this class with him.
Dr. Hall demands essays typical of masters theses rather than simple coursework. Each prompt asks many questions at once and leaves students befuddled as to what he wants. His general communication skills are similarly befuddling. The books he chose for course material were consistently dull and depressing. He hasn't posted any grades all semester.
Responded to emails very belatedly and gave little relevant feedback, none of which was ever new from one assignment to another. Did not submit any grades on Blackboard for the entirety of the course: class has been over for a week and I still don't know what I got on my first paper!
For my class, there are four grades. 2 papers, midterm and a final. They do not have specific dates, which is nice. HOWEVER, he never posted the midterm, and I had to EMAIL him asking about whether we were having a midterm and he sent it to me. He is slow to reply to emails and is a slow grader. DO NOT RECOMMEND for online classes.
This class is reading 6 books (all are depressing), writing 4 papers, watching terrible movies and listening to Hall give his life story. He is terrible at putting in grades. His lectures are torture but the take home final is all about the lectures so take notes through your tears. I would never take this history class if you like history.
Do not take a class with this guy. Make sure you save documented evidence that you turned assignments in for him because he will still give you 0's, watch your blackboard CLOSELY. Class is all reading awful books and awful lectures, you will not want to wake up in the morning for this class. Avoid Kenneth Hall if you enjoy history.
I don't understand why this guy gets such bad reviews. I thoroughly enjoyed taking HIST 150 online. He comes off as respectable, kind, and caring and absolutely helps with any questions you may have. My class had a lot of exchange students, and he would constantly use Chinese history to help them understand the subject better. I recommend him.
Very easy in summer semester. Good professor.
Literally one of the worst professors I have ever had. Not only is the syllabus full of inaccurate information, but he does not give clear directions. He can say the requirements for an assignment, and when yo do exactly what is required, suddenly it is incorrect. Like ?? Do. Not. Take. unless you have literally no other choice. I hate this class.
I had to take his online class and it was the worst class I've ever taken. He uploaded nothing on BB. No information, no announcement, and not even the final. When he never sent anything out I had to email him for both tests or I would have never gotten them. He didn't grade anything or give any feedback until I was done with the class, not clear.
He offered to submit a rough draft to the TA who would look at them. My rough draft was good, but I got a 62% on the paper. He said to not write about the book itself, as the reader has already read the novels, yet in many of my references to the book he wanted me to detail the scene. 3 papers done so far, only one graded with a month left of semes
He gives a book about every 2 weeks. You write an essay on each book, you just have to put lots of examples in. His lectures are boring and unengaging. I was able to pass with an A pretty easy but the class overall was dull.
make a good impression with participation and effort with your first paper and you'll be grateful for the rest of the semester. he lost my 100pt assignment and he gave me full credit because he liked my other work. very passionate about history. parrot his lectures and ideas and you'll get a good grade on essays
He rambles a lot about his experiences in Asia, which is really cool, but he tends to repeat himself and rambles for 10 minutes of class time on a topic that doesn't exactly relates to the topic of the lecture. Gives unclear instructions and two weeks at best for a novel. More of a literary analysis class than a history class.
He is a great guy but is very unorganized and you have to literally email him multiple times to even get the assignments, BUT he gives you the answers to basically all the homework, midterm, etc so if you show up to class you will get an A no doubt. Nice guy but a lot of rambling done in class. I would take him again just to get the A
This man is amazing in my eyes. He clearly understands that hist150 is non essential and that we are only here because of the schools requirements. I don't know why he gets negative reviews but he is a true gem in my eyes. An easy A because he gives all the answers to everything.
Definitely recommend taking History 150 with him if you want an easy A, gives the answers to everything and is a really nice and understanding guy
EASIEST CLASS. Got a 100% two tests thats it. Takes them it groups and he gives you the answers for the tests.
Terrible with zoom. His wife has to come in and help him figure out how to turn it on. His monotone voice is even worse with a mask. The papers are basically the entire class grade and the only feedback he gives is on grammar. Worst prof ive ever had. dont take him
Professor Hall caused me a lot of stress and anxiety honestly. He doesn't really follow his syllabus and I feel like he would randomly through assignments at us with no explanation. I feel bad for his TA because she honestly had no clue what was happening either. Only good thing is that he would give the answers in class for homework assignments.
Overall he's alright. However, I never know what his expectations are for the papers, as his syllabus is not up to date and he doesn't always explain things clearly in class. His feedback on the papers can also come off as a little harsh, as if he expects you to do a graduate level analysis of the topic being discussed. Not good with Zoom either.
Dr. Hall was an extremely kind man, but his class made no sense at all. I felt as if there was no organization and his postings for the assignments made no sense. Half of the time I had no idea what I was submitting. Everyone I knew from the class felt the same way. The nice part was that there were only two tests to which the answers were given.
Honestly the worst professor Ive had at Ball State. He reads directly from his PowerPoint slides the entire time. He doesnt have a clear grading system. One week hell give you an A the next a C. I purchased nearly 6 books that we had to read and write 4-6 page papers over. I ended up with a B in the class. Ill never take his class again.
Avoid his classes if possible. He is very harsh with his feedback and expects graduate-level work out of a 300 level course. There is no set schedule, and you never know what you will be doing or talking about when you walk into class. Boring, unwelcoming, and a confidence ruiner. An excellent student in all other history courses? Impossible here!!
This class is fairly simple if you show up. You will do quizzes as a class together and will take tests outside of class. While textbooks were bought for the class, it seemed that they were barely used at all. He is definitely not tech-savvy, which made contact and canvas tests hard. Besides that, it's an overall great class & professor.
Professor is a nice guy, but boy will you bored to death in this class. Its lecture everyday and is crammed with so much information and most is just about his own research and work. Lots of books to buy and must read them since grades is almost entirely off papers. Won't lie, I did not show up a lot because class time felt useless.
he doesnt do attendance but he gives you the answers for everything so i always went to class. im awful at history but did well in his class
