If I had known this was Mr.Hawkins first college class, I probable would not have taken It. He was struggling for the first few weeks. He made several promises that he did not keep. Everyday we would have some kind of group activity which was confusing sometime. We were given a syllabus with the previous semester schedule.
Prof. Hawkins is a great teacher. He is passionate and very knowledgeable. He is always ready to help students that need a little extra help. He stayed after class and came early to assist. Great explanations;he also made classes fun and interesting. Would recommend
He was alright kinda weird never stuck with syllabus.
Even though Mr. Hawkins is a new professor at HCC, I took his Spring 2014 class, he is very passionate for his job, likes to teach, makes classes interesting and helps the students that needs help and ask, if you do the assignments and show up to all the classes you should not have a problem getting an easy "A", I recommend him, very professional.
What a sarcastic instructor, mostly in email. Puts things in syllabus but says opposite. If you remind him of it, he gets defensive. Unorganized. Half the things in syllabus are not even done, so do what he says, not what is in syllabus. He also wants all papers HAND WRITTEN, not typed! Who does that??
Professor Hawkins will work for you if you work for him- He can be disorganized, but he is very passionate about his work as a high school teacher and professor, sometimes he doesn't answer emails, but overall if you come to class, do your essays(3 for the class I took) and your work, and you will pass. He can be hilarious, and he can be weird.
Professor Hawkins is a good guy, he structures his class more on persuasive essays so meaning youll be writing a lot . But he does tell you what hes looking for so in the end its really easy to get an "A" . Only real noticeable negative is he does tend to get a little ahead of himself so he might forget things here and there
Hes a really cool guy , lays everything out just follow the steps and you'll make it out alive. ;)
Professor Hawkins is clearly passionate. He offers plenty of extra credit, genuinely cares about helping you leave his class an improved writer. Unbiased, patient, attendance matters, good sense of humor and a joy to listen to. I recommend him and I will be taking him again.
Unreasonable grader. Doesn't stick to syllabus. Unclear of his own thoughts. Will tell you to change your paper, and once you change it he completely changes it again. Has unreal expectations that he doesn't even follow. Scatterbrained. DONT DO IT!!
I would NEVER take a class with this Professor again. He is very confusing, and all over the place. He is a tough grader, even after you get tutoring regularly you will still struggle tremendously!! Save yourself the UNNECESSARY STRESS!
Hawkins is funny at times and tries to keep the class light. Expect homework every other weekend which is always reading and writing. He grades easier in the beginning but is tough after the first essay. Also expect TONS of emails, which can get overwhelming and confusing because he is a bit scatterbrained. Overall a good prof. but expect to work.
Mr. Hawkins is a good teacher but does not stick with the syllabus, he was constantly changing dates and dead lines and it was very hard to pass this class the first time I took it being fresh out of high school with no college experience taking it the second time was even worse with a professor that was not organized.
Mr. Hawkins was an outstanding English teacher. I had him for a dual enrollment English and he was pretty strict about punctuality, and how the papers are headed. He tries to get you to dig to develop your writing skills better and always has interesting topics to teach. Very understanding and willing to work with you! I would totally take again.
I absolutely love Mr. Hawkins & his class! His humbleness and helpful personality really showed throughout the semester. He gives great lectures that relate to assignments, gives you opportunity for extra credit and is very funny. If you study, participate and do all of your homework you will do great. He is a fair grader :)))
Mr. Hawkins was a great teacher! I learned a lot from his class. He really helped me improve on my writing skills. He kept the class lively and it was far from boring. I advise you to take his Saturday class if you can. He says he would rather wake up in the mornings and teach on Saturday than any other day.
I took Professor Hawkins for ENC 1101 and I just signed up for 1102. He really cares about his students. He wants you to learn. He makes it very clear cut what it takes to get an A. Yes, there's work, it's not a fluff class. But if you follow his syllabus, you'll do great. Grades are posted really quickly and he even gives some extra credit.
Hawkins was a great professor for my first year in college. He wants everyone to pass, offering a lot of extra credit. His quizzes are easy, as long as you read the story you should be okay. The reading quizzes are true or false. The homework assignments are easy, either reading a story and/or grammar work. Only 3 essays need to be written.
Professor Hawkins is an amazing professor. He really cares about his students, and he cares that everyone in his class gets an A. He also makes everything easy to understand, and he helps his students understand what they are learning. I had a great time in his class, and I even signed up for ENC1102 with him.
Professor Hawkins was amazing. He would keep the class fun by relating lessons to real life situations he went through. He also really cares about his student and wants nothing more than for everyone to get an A.
Hawkins was a great teacher! He cares about his students, wanted everyone to get an A, always offering help if you need it. His class is easy to pass as long as you dont miss class and you read the essays he assigns. Only three essays to write the whole semester. Although, i wouldn't reccomond taking his class if you need a super organized teacher.
He always wants you to succeed. You do have to participate, because he provides a lot of homework and quizzes. However, you can always go to him and he will help you at anytime. To those who say they will never take him again - I don't know what they saw, because I plan to take him again for English 1102. By far, he is one of my favorite teachers.
Professor Hawkins is honestly a really nice professor. He does his best to help those who need it and overall won't let you fail as long as you do your best. He does give quite a bit a of work but it's manageable and it's not hard honestly, just time consuming. The only "negative" aspect is that he can get disorganized sometimes. But that's all :)
Mr. Hawkins is a great teacher. He wants the best for his students. He offers extra credit and allows you to attend another class if you miss yours. The text books are used a couple of times throughout the semester. He offers opportunities for you get earn credit on your essays if you revise them. Over all he is a great teacher.
come in everyday, give all you got and you should leave his class at the end of the semester with an A or B at the least.
He is kind and more than willing to work with students one-on-one. He is also fair and enthusiastic about his lessons. Attendance does matter, but students are always able to access him outside of class. He's very friendly and easy to approach. He gives great essay feedback and made me a better writer. I would recommend Hawkins to any student!
I loved Mr. Hawkins, I had him for my first class of the day. He grades hard on essays however if you just talk to him he will help and typically tries to help before an essay also. He gives a lot of homework but it is just readings and then you are quizzed on the readings so make sure you read, they are not too log but occasionally will be.
He is caring and he is a tough grader in essays, I definitely learned to be a better writer thanks to him. he is funny. gives extra credit.
Professor Hawkins is a great teacher and wants to make sure his students really know their material and do well on tests. He uses group discussions that are very helpful and often even offers extra credit. His lectures are interesting as well, and he gives plenty of time to complete assignments, which he usually returns with feedback.
Mr. Hawkins is the first teacher I am going out of my way to rate. He's great. Very dry sense of humor but absolutely funny. He is clear about what he wants out of an assignment and wants the best for his students. He will work with you if you reach out. If you want to be his favorite, talk to him about BBQ or just meat in general.
This is a PHENOMENAL teacher. I took this class in summer of 2017, the course was heavy but durable. Everyone got A's and B's and i think one C. Professor is very nice, funny, explain the material very well. He is fair and reasonable when grading. Show up for class and do the reading and you'll pass. GREAT, GREAT, GREAT that's all I can think of!
Had him for ENC 1101-1102 and I absolutely loved him. He gonna gives you time on essays and great feedback. Tests are never too hard. Follow along in his lectures and youll do fine. Rarely homework assignments but a flaw I would point out is sometimes hell assign a lot and itll take him awhile to grade it all.
He connects with all of us and hes a pretty laid back professor that actually cares about our grades.
Mr. Hawkins is an amazing teacher. He tells funny stories, and always gives opportunities for his students to earn extra credit. I would definitely recommend taking his class. Its super easy and he is very helpful.
Mr Hawkins is great, hes a tough grader but still great, very clear on his explanations and breaks down the material so even dummies can understand. Hes gives great feedback, offers extra credit and encourages class discussions and participation. English For Dummies hes your guy lol
He's a great teacher, I'd highly recommend him!
You will do a manageable amount of reading and critiquing of the reading assigned. Do the assignments, turn them in on time, and an A is achievable by anyone taking this class. I took the course over the summer(six weeks) and learned a great deal in such a short period of time. The class takes part in group discussions which encourage all to engage
He's a great professor with a good sense of humor. Lenient and not a super hard grader, but be prepared to write at least 2 essays. You should buy the textbooks. Lots of easy assignments. Quizzes are every week. Be prepared to talk with classmates about the stories he assigns to read. Not hard to get an A. Attendance matters. Good feedback + cares.
Great teacher, he really helped me out with my homework/essays etc.
Easy class just a lot of essays. He grades very fairly and doesnt fail anyone unless you literally dont turn anything in. Hes understanding with attendance but its better to show up or else you wont learn anything
My favorite professor this semester! Clear communication, helpful feedback. A fantastic educator. If you show up and do the work, you will get an A! If you lie or try to get away with the minimum effort, you will not pass. This teacher is here for you in and out of class as a supportive listener and helpful person. Two thumbs up!
As long as you do what he says, and you try, you will get an A in this class. He is a GREAT professor. Very funny, kind, and keeps things interesting. Do not skip class with out good reason youll regret it. Hes always offering extra credit and giving you feedback when you ask for it.
Great Professor. Really gave us opportunities for extra credit and was always able to give good feedback. Class was always fun and he's a hilarious guy. Only reason you would fail is if you never show up. If you put effort and always in class it's impossible to fail.
Professor Hawkins is a great ! When you first take his class you will think he gives a lot of homework, but it is only to make you a better writer and he is very down to earth. If you like group projects and feedback on your papers he is your Professor for English I and II.
He is very approachable and funny. His lectures include stories that relate to the lesson.
From day one, Professor Hawkins makes you aware that his class is tough. Very few earn A's and if you do not show up for class you will not pass. Although you have a ton of work, it is worth it. He speaks the truth and he gives room for extra credit. So if you take him be prepared to work because you receive what you earn.
He is a little unorganized at times but it works in your favor. you only have 2 papers to write. the secret is to follow the outline he has you fill in. the outline is your ticket to an A on the papers. Otherwise, he takes attendance and wont pass you if you miss 3 classes in a row or 5 classes total. there is a bunch of quizzes online on the book.
Professor Hawkins is a nice guy, but not a good professor. He is extremely unorganized and is almost always off topic. He doesn't actually teach anything during class. Most of the assignments are easy and online, but there are a ton and they pile up quickly. Don't expect for him to grade things quickly or give good feedback - he won't.
He's an amazing professor, he can seem rude but he's really nice and genuine if you get to know him. Grading is clear and to the point, 2 essays overall. He's really funny and will help you if you just ask, even outside of class. He's popular so his classes fill up quickly so hurry.
I had him for English I. He's pretty intimidating at times but makes sure that if you work hard, you leave with a good grade. We wrote so many drafts on our essays. Two papers felt like ten. Attendance is a very important. Certain assignments are point heavy so if you miss class or don't do the work you won't pass.
If you just show up to class and do all of the assignments you'll pass with an A. Assigns easy busy work but it helps you bring your grade up. Keeps class interesting so time goes by fast.
Professor Hawkins has so far been my favorite professor at Hillsborough Community College. He is inspired by his students, and makes sure that his students know he has their best interest at heart. He will go out of his way to help his students as well. Assignment Heavy, but easy. 3 essays, and he is good with feedback. I recommend him fully.
I have had him for both ENC's and I love his class! It is very easy if you do the work, for ENC1102 we read and do 3 essays throughout the course. The readings aren't hard and the quizzes he does for the readings are super easy (if you read them of course). I am taking him next year for LIT2000, he is amazing!
Professor Hawkins is the BEST ! I took both ENC's classes with him and I was never disappointed. He is very clear and always available to help giving useful feedback. He is funny and a great educator who push the students to do their best.
Prof Hawkins is great and he cares about his students. Theres always HW due for a grade but its not difficult (IF you read of course!) Theres a few quizzes and essays but none of its actually hard, its just lots of reading! Its an English class though so you shouldn't expect anything different! Amazing, funny professor! Wish I could take him again!
Mr Hawkins is one of the best teachers I've ever had. He is very passionate about his job and I don't think I've ever had a teacher who genuinely listens like he does, he always takes in everyone opinion and view and makes every class enjoyable. The work is easy if you read the material and he always offers help if needed. Definitely recommend.
Professor Hawkins is truly an awesome Professor! I took him for English I & now Im taking him for English II. Class is easy, as long as you do your work and participate. He cares about his students and always uses the term Im here for you guys. Tons of extra credit opportunities and always has time to talk if you should need it.
Prof. Hawkins is one of the most supportive, organized, thoughtful teachers I have ever had. He genuinely cares about his students and wants them to be successful. You will do well if you take the time to read and put in the work. Offers extra credit too! He is funny and keeps class interesting and relevant. I respect and recommend him completely.
He's great! I've taken him for 3 years now and I definitely recommend him. There is no homework and we have great discussions!
Although this teacher is generally a nice guy, the work load is awful and there is just alot of busy work. I do not recommened taking this teacher. If you're gone for just one day, its very hard to catch back up. There are easier teachers at this school that dont require the amount of work he gives
There's a lot of work however Professor Hawkins makes you aware of that from day one. Attendance is mandatory, but overall he is an amazing teacher and super nice. You will write a lot of essays in his 1101 class but throughout the semester it really does improve your writing skills.
Professor Hawkins is the best! He gives many, many opportunities for extra credit and many assignments (none are super difficult) so there are plenty of grades. Hes very helpful and understanding. Definitely would take him again!
Professor Hawkins is extremely laid back. Its a super easy class if you keep up with the assignments/essays. Homework heavy but nothing drastic. TAKE HIM! You can't go wrong
I got Hawkins for 1101 during FA2019. his entire curriculum had changed; there are now 4 essays to write and edit. He has a lot of knowledge about English. GO TO HIS OFFICE during the hours. show him you're trying and you will pass. He will literally tell you exactly what he needs from you and step by step how to get there. 10/10 would take again!
My favorite professor ever! super generous and really cares about his students. I took him for both ENC 1101 and 1102 and really enjoyed his class. I promise you you won't regret taking his class!
Very unclear, doesnt specify what he wants. Please stay away to spare your GPA
Good Teacher, so caring, Lots of Essays (about 20) which drains me, lots of 10 question quizzes (about 30), about around 50+ assignments total (oof). Take this class if you have time for it (unlike me).
A very good teacher
I love Professor Hawkins! I was worried during the first week of his class because he says it will be a hard class to scare some people away! Very easy if you do the work, he helps out all his students in any way he can. Nice guy, great teacher, smart, and he clearly knows what hes doing. Im surprised hes at HCC and not a bigger school! 10/10
I took his first online course and he was so awesome. You could honestly do the bare minimum. We didn't have to write a single essay and he gave lots of extra credit. Definitely the best English teacher since elementary school.
Maybe a good teacher in person, but the online class is terrible. Worst class experience I have had. Weekly lectures consisted of only one maybe 15 minute video that rarely gave accurate details of the assignments. Essays were never graded on time, so you never received feedback in time to apply to your next draft. Bad email correspondence. AVOID!
love him as a teacher and what we are learning about. this is a intro to literature class iso more discussion and a little less formal writing, but I certainly plan on taking him for comp one and two. He is just exactly what you want in a professor: funny, passionate, and knowledgeable.
You want a professor that is passionate and involves students that is Hawkins! Do you want to learn about some of the most important topics, learn them from him. Every class is amazing. Best teacher ever.
Professor Hawkins online classes are horrible. There is no clear direction for any assignments, and he just refers you back to his 15 minute Lecture Videos that often have entirely different instructions. For the first 2 months of class, be prepared to have up to 8-10 assignments out of the week. He isnt very organized and a very stressful class
If you are taking it online pls do not do it, his lectures are 15 minutes short, for me that is not enough because he is not explaining in a deeper level, his due dates are always wrong. He says he has too many classes and does not give a good feedback unless you contact him, but he doesn't always respond and you stay lost.
He's somewhat of a tough grader. Excluding the essays there isn't much HW. Class is pretty chill. I'd take him again. Class was cancelled a few times but it wasn't a big deal. He offers to gives students feedback during office hours . He may call on you and you'll have to talk to class mates alot but I have Social Anxiety and I was okay :)
He was okay-ish. He didn't give a lot of feedback or instruction and graded pretty hard. I took his online class and he was unorganized. He seems like a nice person but not the best professor. He was a bit rude to me regarding my topic because he didn't agree with me. I'm happy to be almost done. His class caused me a lot of unnecessary stress.
Cool professor, gives out extra credit from time to time! Just so your work youll be fine..
Professor Hawkins's African American Literute class is an amazing course that everyone should take. He is very passionate about the topics and is really good at listening to the student's opinions. There is reading involved but we read pretty interesting books, and the quizzes are short and easy. Overall is an easy A class.
An okay teacher. For 1101, he tells you anyone will rarely get an A. He does pre-recorded videos from previous semesters - seems like he was having a mid-life crisis on his video upon his 50th birthday. He does give extra credit from time to time. He deducts major points when you are late, even four minutes late submitting.
Best class that I have taken at HCC. If you do the work you will pass mostly completion grades.
Mr. Hawkins 1102 class is so so easy. The start of the class is reading short stories and taking quizzes. Then we "read" 3 plays watching the movie and reading along)and had questions on that. We had no more than 4 writing assignments and they were all less than 2 pages. So easy, So nice.
The writing assignments he has are fairly easy. He grades to see if you read and understood the topic. He gives feedback on every assignment and will try and schedule conferences so you can go over the paper and see what you miss. Overall he's a fantastic professor and I would sign up for his course again.
So, professor Hawkins is a great teacher. I had the chance to take his ENC 1101 class. He is by no way means easy, but the work he makes you put in definitely makes this class worth it as you learn a lot! He also gives you lots of extra credit! This isn't a super tough class and you'll really like the professor.
This is his favorite class. He cares for all his students and takes out the time to talk to everyone. He is very helpful and makes this class really fun and easy. I would recommend to every student that they should take this class. I don't think anyone got a grade lower than A when I took this class with him.
This Prof is Okay. He starts off saying that he rarely gives an A. Videos are pre-recorded videos from previous semesters and if several students email him the same questions, he'll send an announcement, then prepare for the put down. You'll hear a kid screaming in the background of videos from time to time so you won't be able to understand.
Cons Requires an expensive textbook Lots of reading and LONG discussion posts 3 Essays (he grades hard but won't tell you why) Instructions are often unclear Pros Extra credit He is always on top of social justice issues
Super super easy and really nice. The Lit class was African American Literature. Really heavy on race topics but it expanded my view and was a really easy A. His online classes dont have meetings but attendance is mandatory for in person classes. A really great teacher overall.
Professor Hawkins is alright. I do struggle on essays and that all his class is about unfortunately. But in the brightside I have improved a lot and its all thanks to Hawkins. His lecures or 50/50, sometimes helpful/sometimes pointless. He took too much time talking about covid and politics, which I did not like. You can tell which party he's in.
Very easy to get an A. Most assignments are completion grades or as long as you follow the topic you will easily be able to get an A on everything. He was very understanding of when I emailed for an extension on an assignment. Great Professor!! All of the readings were available free online, which he provided links for.
I think professor Kenneth is an excellent professor. For 10 weeks course, I received a lot of homework to do like every week I have 2 long essays to be finished. However, he gave me chance to redo it if I submitted it before the due date. So his grading speed is quite fast.
Not a lot of reading, but heavy readings. If you don't agree with his ideas you will suffer and he will keep calling you out.
Terrible just absolutely terrible, class created extra unnecessary stress, very unclear in messages when asking questions, takes forever to grade things, extensive discussion posts every week, extremely tough grader, video lectures that he post are often difficult to hear due to background noise, be ready to work, it's extremely hard keeping an A
really good professor.
His quizzes were terrible. 10 questions, available for 24 hours, once a week. I missed a single quiz in the very beginning of the year due to a family medical emergency and Professor Hawkins did not care. I earned an A on EVERY SINGLE grade except for this one quiz and it kept me at a B. Discussion boards every single week, so much reading!
This is by far the worst professor that I ever had. During the entirety of the class, he told us that all would get an A due to low attendance since he would be there if anyone needed help, and he also said that we were going to do every assignment in class. As you may imagine, nothing that he said to us was true. DO NOT CHOOSE THIS PROFESSOR.
Worst prof
Although down-to-earth and personable, Prof. Hawkins needs to slow down and have better planning. He juggles about 10 classes at once and his online classes suffer for it. He builds the class as he goes along, so there is no point in trying to map out your planner because he is constantly moving things around/adding things randomly during the week.
He's a really good professor and a fair grader and he gives extra credit opportunities. The only thing I would say is that he makes us go over the same essay 4 times but doing this helps your grade more than it hurts it. For each essay, we do an outline, 1st draft, 2nd draft, final, and revision.
He cares about issues the district may not favor, and sees it as important enough to ensure the next generation can be more civically and socially active. His calm and inviting demeanor lets students open up and play devil's advocate to any subject and engage in what may be a valuable or memorable conversation. He's also flexible with late deadline
The professor is nice, if have any questions, he replies quickly. But he has organize classes and assignments are not very clear. He gave assignment rather abruptly and gave only 24 hours to complete it. He's also grade a bit difficult but have extra credit
Every single interaction with Professor Hawkins has ended up with him replying with a condescending tone, even if he was in the wrong. He gives lengthy assignments for simple topics and is NEVER clear about the requirements. Even watching him during his online lectures he can't find where he posts his requirements.
This instructor does not answer most of my emails, he is always taking points off and he is never clear about the assigments.
His slides are basically a copy and paste of the textbook. he will read off the slides and then dismiss the class 15 minutes late!. HE DOES NOT explain any assignment. The class average was around 65%. Doesn't matter if you're interested in the topic, he will make this class so unenjoyable.
Bad professor does not provide material to study.
There are a total of 65 homework assignments and 25 papers to submit.
He is not prepared for lecture, be aware that he will spend most time taking about himself.
There are multiple papers due each week, he does not allow for late summation so do not take him if you have a job.
He gives a lot of homework for a very easy course, he does not like for students to ask any questions. Sometimes he is very rude.
He will not help you in any of your papers, even if you go to his office hours he will not help you. His excuse is always his busy schedule.
His pop out quizzes are never the same with the questions discussed in class.
He does not grade the assignments on time, he always will criticize your work not matter what. It is not worth it to waste time for an essay class. Take another professor if you can.
His course is not organized, does not provide a detail feedback regarding your mistakes in the assignment. There is no rubric so you are not able to see what you misted.
There 45 papers due for the course along with a 250 final exam questions. Be prepared to read a lot!
There are many assignments in which you cannot access because he forgets to open them for students. Therefore you will miss a lot of assignment even though you are a dedicated student.
There are a lot of things in which this course can improve. For example there is no necessity to repeat a 1000 words essay every three days. It is a waste of time to rewrite everything again.
The amount of papers in this course is unbelievable 45 papers! each one of 1000 words and it is due every Thursday.
Prof. Hawkins is disorganized and unfamiliar with Canvas. He frequently forgets to post necessary assignment content and sets due dates during class hours. His assignments are often incomplete or inaccessible, yet he still grades ruthlessly. He tends to be condescending towards student complaints, if he does respond. Overall a frustrating class.
Professor Kenneth Hawkins failed to match his lectures with the content on his quizzes. Quiz questions are not well worded. Assignments are not explained to full detail, he leaves it up to you to figure out most everything. Doesn't give feedback on your essays. Even if you write well, it is futile, he will give you a bad grade.
So many lectures to take notes on, super hard grader mainly for essays, and unclear instruction. Essay averages were 60-65. Discussions every week, each is 7 posts due 3 different days and times. Shows us students assignments with their names and says their work is perfect. Condescending, rude, disorganized, and completely lost doing own lectures.
Dr. Hawkins is amazing. He sees the best in students and will tell you so. He does not give feedback on essays unless asked, but he never hesitates to and is always an email away. He really helped me get through this semester as I was dealing with some personal stuff. I won't soon forget him. I highly recommend his class.
Dr. Hawkins is an extremely tough grader. If you want to pass his class I wish you luck, if you get one thing wrong on the paper you already have a 60%. And it only worsens because his criteria will get even more strict to the point that you can barely follow them. Basically, the system feels rigged against you, and his "Help" doesn't help at all.
Mr. Hawkins is a somewhat manipulative individual, he says he'll help you within the class, but once you actually need it you will receive no feedback, or at least a copy and paste response for a another student. It also does't hlp tht he cannot spll. (The misspelling is a joke, but he has no right to teach English without knowing it himself.)
I have mixed emotions about him and this class. English has always been my best subject, he is just a stickler for rules. If you do not follow the instructions to a T, you will fail. I am used to difficult english teachers, the class itself isn't difficult, its just him.
Never communicates anything, doesn't correct assignment descriptions and expects you to know, rude, unsympathetic, is always late to grading and even denies students learning material (video lectures) because he doesn't want to do it, doesn't tell you how to do your assignments, very vague and never answers your questions, and terrible feedback.
Do not take him if you want a good grade. He is an awfully harsh grader and he always has something to say about anything you turn in. Requires you do so much work in little amounts of time with no explanation. I got tired of taking this course really quick. So since he decides to make comments on my work, here is my final comment on his.
Took this professor for English 1 and 2. English 1 was super easy as long as you show up and do the work. English 2 was more difficult it was a lot of writing essays but again he gives good feedback and and grades fairly.
Mr. Hawkins is a great teacher and this class is for people who take English class seriously
For an online class, he'd make all of his assignments handwritten. That is stupid. People take online classes because they're unable to do in-person work for in-person classes. People like me who work daily don't have time for such trivial things and he fails them because of so.
Mr. Hawkins has been my teacher for every English class I have taken. I first took his lit class, which was absolutely amazing and then took both of his English classes 101 and 102. English 101 was definitely a challenging class, but English 102 was easier regardless of level of easiness. I learned more in his class than I have in any other course
This class was a lot of work! At first I thought I would not survive, I scored very low on my essay grade. He is a tough grader! But what points Dr. Hawkins takes off in grades, he makes up for in extra credit. There are plenty of options to get extra credit but it is not easy to earn. Would not recommend for those who are lazy or cramped on time!
I was working full time and had little time to do homework, but he makes most of his assignments to be turned in handwritten and assigns discussions every week requiring 7 different replies, each having a word count, and needed to be posted on different days by a certain time. Kind of ridiculous expectations for an online course.
Unorganized in their materials and often posts instructions that do not align to what the actual requirements of the assignment is. Unprofessionally responds to emails using things like "Huh?". Very homework heavy with even online classes requiring you to submit hand written notes. Also relies heavily on turntin things like that for grading.
A lot of assignments, he does show some passion in his work and is willing to work with you. Overall I would not take it again, but if I was in a pinch, I would be okay.
If you gave Hawkins a bad rate I can guarantee you did not do the work. Hawkins work for 1101 is pretty rough, he states that at the beginning of the course and he accepts late work, communicates effectively and quickly, and has absolutely helped me achieve a good grade when I struggled. He is also a family man and understands those issues.
Dr. Hawkins is a great professor and is always willing to work with you. When he warns you at the beginning of the semester that there's a lot of work, times what your thinking by ten because he is not joking. It's a little rough in the first half but eases up. If you DO THE WORK, you'll get an A. He takes late work up to three absences from class.
Professor Hawkins runs a tough class, but if you engage with the material and use study tools like unstuck study, you can succeed. The workload is heavy, but fair feedback helps improve writing.
Be ready for a lot of work, that is pretty much it. None of the assignments are too difficult however, some of them are more time consuming than others. I believe most of the assignments are mostly the curriculum and not added fluff. If I needed to take ENC-1102, I would not hesitate to join his class again.
The workload for this class was so overwhelming, I spent the majority of the semester working on the homework for his class rather than the classes that focus on my major which was extremely frustrating. Expect to do 6 drafts for 1 essay and handwrite notes even when taking an online class. Passive aggressive, tough grader. Avoid for your sanity.
Worst professor ever
Unfortunately, this professor assigns a LOTTT of homework so unless this is the only class you are taking a semester do not pick him. He grades and doesn't provide feedback on your writing and makes assignments really difficult.
For a 1000-level class, this was ridiculous! The professor is very cool and tries to make sure everyone can succeed. His papers, though, are an absolute nightmare! You can easily pass his class if you go to the writing center and revise your paper, but I swear he grades the papers way too harshly. If you are a strong writer, take him!
I took this class online for 1102 and the clas was very unorganized with loads of work due daily. There would be some times when he randomly released assignments and I wasn't able to get them done on time. There is a late penalty for late assignments. If you are going to take this professor take it in person!
Took his 1101, idk what possessed me to take his 1102. I learned a lot in 1101 but 1102 is so unnecessarily TIME CONSUMING. Seven part DBAs. Papers are the same weight as normal assignments. Most assignments take 1-2 hours to complete. Several assignments a week. There aren't enough characters to explain the true experience of this class.
He is a good professor and gives clear instructions for his class. It could either be a really easy class to take because all essays piggy back off the previous one or really hard because of the amount of sources and corrections each essay needs. Really grateful for this class it taught me a lot but i would not put myself through this again.
He was a very caring and understanding professor however the lectures seemed to repeat themselves sometimes. There was a lot of what I thought was unnecessary note taking but thats really the only work you do in the class. Overall an easy class and a chill professor. Just attend the lectures and do the notes and you should pass.
Professor Hawkins is a respectful and enthusiastic educator. Through him I've learned a lot about life and difference in the United States.
This is one of the few classes I recommend students to take simply because all the material is entertaining and he seems passionate about his teaching. There is quite of bit of homework and work, but if you do it and base it off his criteria, you should make an A.
The class itself is work heavy but he tries to make it as fun and engaging as possible
He chill but the essay be killing me
Doesn't really go in depth when grading your paper. If you have a problem with the grade just go talk to him about it and he'll look over it and give feedback.
He assigns a lot of work at the start but the way he does essays is very good. Usually in school I disliked english class because I wouldn't be able to write about what I liked but he tells you to write about something you want.
Professor Kenneth Hawkins was an amazing teacher. Talking to him was easy and he understood all of my needs. I had no problems with him and he is very lenient when it comes to grades. 10/10 would recommend him to other students.
I definitely recommend taking his course, very understanding
I would say the work load for this course is average, maybe above average but nothing that a full time student can't handle. If you want to become a better writer than take this course. All you have to do is try. Often I received very helpful advice from the professor.
A lot of homework, but definitely worth it overall. He is a wonderful teacher and very understanding. Assignments are easy to understand too.
he's super laidback compared to my other professors. the workload is about 3-4 assignments a week. he recognizes hard work and motivation. attendance is mandatory and if you submit assignments on time you'll be fine.
Be prepared for a lot of essays to write. Othwise he is great
The class is not hard, course assignments are not hard, it's just unorganized and a HEAVY course workload lots of homework assignments. Lots of assignments due throughout the week. He makes himself available to offer feedback and strategies to increase your grade, he offers a ton of extra credit. It definitely matters to him how well you are doing
If you hate yourself you will take this class.every week u will be doing 8 assignments while ure friends hangout I had to take time off js to be able to do my hw u will die trying to do 1 assignment js for another to be assigned so unorganized its too much then scheduling to talk to him he won't even show up does he not get tired of grading work
He gives homework like he is paid for every paper he gives out
He is a bad teacher. He always says he gives feedback, but just directs you to an online article. All he does is follow an AI generated rubric and not do a single thing.
The class wasn't horrible, I took him online. The majority of assignments are 10 notes, and 4 big essays with multiple drafts. He does use AI detecter so don't use it. He was tough when it came to essays as long as your following format you'll pass.
STEER CLEAR! Took this class summer 2025. Terribly unorganized, as if he doesn't know what's posted on his own canvas. Assignment instructions are unclear and he gives TERRIBLE, feedback on essays. He tells you to schedule a meeting with him but he won't show up. He doesn't teach you ANYTHING, just points you to the Purdue owl site. STAY FAR AWAY!
Not for everyone, grades very harshly on essays, he uses AI to make and grade assignments so it's hard to respect his style, although he is helpful. If you meet deadlines and put a ton of effort in your essays you will get an A. Don't take unless you are serious about college.
You have to put in the work to earn a good grade. I liked him as both a professor and a person; he strongly advised for people to come up and talk to him. The work was repetitive and meant to be that way, so I didn't particularly view it as too much work.
If you actually show up, pay attention, and ask questions in class when you have them, you'll be fine. The people who complain usually don't put in effort. Dr. Hawkins's online instructions aren't always clear, so take notes on what he says in class if you're forgetful. And don't copy from AI—he checks. Stay engaged and you'll do well.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. He gives out zeros like no other. He grades papers using AI services. He doesn't teach you anything. He tries to force you to meeting after meeting and still gives you bad grades. He will wait until the last few weeks of class to give you the worse grades. If you have other options stay away. Trust me he is a harsh grader!
Don't take this class. He's bad at giving instructions online and gives way too much homework. Nice enough but his lectures felt very disorganized, I got the feeling he was always thinking about something totally unrelated to the class while he was speaking. He has literally told the class that if he finds out who you voted for, he's done with you.
He is an easy-going man. He wants you to pass from the word go, but you have to put in just a little effort.
He was nice at first but then started getting strict out of no where and using Ai to grade every single thing and work I did on my OWN was flagged for Ai which is so annoying and won't grade anything else unless you meet with him, which not everyone has time for. He's a harsh grader bunch of assignments. Wouldn't take again!
