One of the toughest classes I had in Davis, and it's only 3 damn units. No book, but listening to the podcasts over and over again is almost a requirement. Don't take other difficult classes when taking this class.

He's one of the hardest professor at UC Davis but I actually learned alot from him. The most important thing to remember for his class is really the 20 amino acids and the H-H equation(used mostly in all the pH calculations). I got around a B average on my midterms and I'm not that smart. He'll call you an "idiot" every class session though.

Dr. Hilt is a wonderful profesor. He is hard. But the only thing that you have to understand in his class is the homework and the lecture. He gives the best notes. make sure you copy every thing off of the board, because he only tests on what ever he goes over in class. Highly recommend this teacher. Made me like chemistry all over again :)

Material is tough. But it's possible to get at least a B if you go to office hours and the tutoring sessions. If you don't go to office hours, you WILL be lost. Also, you MUST listen to all the podcasts b/c he only tests on lecture material AND the problem sets. Great prof on the whole. Explained things very well.

Dr. Hilt is by far the BEST professor I've had at UCD. He does call you an idiot during every class and tells you why you should be fired, but his explanations are very direct and to the point. Going to office hours isnt really "required" in order to get a good grade. just understand the homework and how he solves problems on the midterm keys.

Honestly, I don't know what everyone is complaining about. Maybe people are just lazy, but if you really put in the work, practice the HW, and tests, attend ALL lectures, and take good notes, this class is completely manageable. His tests are pretty straightforward, and CAN be done! I was happy with my B+, but it did take ALOT of WORK!

Dr. Hilt is easily the best professor I've ever had at the university level. His lecturing style is fluid, and his use of the chalkboard is impressive. Legendary professor. I learned so much. AA knowledge is applicable to Bis 104 (makes biochem aspects a breeze). Exam avg was around 50-60% but he curved heavily, practice the hw problems obsessively and you will score high. Class is difficult, but his confusing slides and teaching style make it even worse. He talks about so many different things during his lectures, and rarely hints on what will be tested on the midterms. I'd recommend taking this class through a different prof!

Amazing professor with wonderful lectures! Straightforward class with extremely fair exams as long as you study the lectures! Highly recommend to take courses with him.

Could be worse. BIS 105 is a fast and difficult class, he does his best to make it organized. Difficult content that you are expected to learn on your own, definitely go to office hours and AATC. Homework is good prep for exams, problems are very similar. Grade is 2 midterm and 1 final exam. Hard but if you study and keep up you will be fine.

Honestly, he is the worst professor I've had at UC Davis. He seems to hate teaching and life in general. His exams are harder than those of other professors, and he only records audio of his lectures. If possible, avoid taking his class. If you have to take his class, expect to get a B at best.

Given that the B- equivalent percent score was 51% I don't know if his “methods” are really working. Honestly, the material itself is not that bad but he does no sample questions in class (Thank you Professor chatgpt) it's kinda going in blind. If you have any questions with the material just go to office hours and pay attention to his wording.

I feel like most of the low ratings is because the class subject is inherently hard. Pr. Hilt teaches you what you need to know, and while he doesn't give practice exams, the provided HW material and information given in lecture are definitively the scope of the exams. Just make sure to review! You can't engrain anything first time you hear it.

Hilt wasn't a terrible professor, his midterms were mainly based on the homework and one or two questions from lecture. If you pay attention in lecture and do the homework you will be fine. The class itself is very hard so expect to put a lot of work in.

His lectures are difficult to follow and only the audios are posted. His homework answer explanations are very limited, so I'd go to the AATC for help. Grading is harsh and there are 4-5 exam problems; 1 question can be 30 out of 100 points. 1st midterm had exact hw questions, but 2nd midterm, hw questions not similar to exams but still helpful.

His slides are incomplete and lectures are not recorded, so you need to go to class to actually see all the content. The textbook provided is quite useless for the material he teaches, and we never go over his homework questions in class or in the answers, so going to office hours is also needed to understand how a question should be approached.

This class is inherently hard for most people. Professor Hilt is very enthusiastic about the content, but he doesn't do all that much to help you understand it. Answers to the homework sometimes don't explain how to get to the right answer. And he doesn't post complete lecture notes. I haven't seen test curves this large since Bis 2A.

Prof Hilt is a really sweet person but you have to attend lecture in person to really understand the content fully. His slides he provides are all empty because he fills them out in lecture. The exams were based off the homework. Grading was on the tough side but the curve is HEAVY.

It's definitely possible to do very well in Hilt as long as you dedicate a lot of time to remembering concepts to a T. The thing I don't like about him is how specific he wants his FRQ answers to be. I didn't know about this first midterm and got hit by several 0/5s because I didn't use specific terminology that he was looking for. Just grind.

On exams, especially those with FRQs, if you don't have the exact wording, you will get a 0 on that question. His MCQs are 'choose all,' and he deducts points if you choose any wrong options, so study his slides carefully.

Lecture slides are crowded and sometimes important info is only spoken and not written on the slides. Lectures are recorded audio only, but slide templates are posted before each lecture. Exams have a few problems that are worth a lot, and not much partial credit is given. However, Dr. Hilt is very passionate about biochemistry.
