Don't be fooed, not an easy course..tests are pretty hard
brilliant prof, don't really need the books study the coursepack!
He's hilarious. This is a hard class, but it's fun. The tests are deadly...

FUNNY!! Tests are hard. don't need to read books, just the course packet.
Definitly one of my fav profs...way funny guy. interesting class for sure.
great class. watch and talk about movies. take notes and test should be fine.
Funny knowledgable but wierd
hilarious prof, great class
entertaining-he definitely won't bore you-you don't really need the books, thoug
Class is a lot of fun. Tests are hard.
My favorite Prof. thus far...starts out as a film nazi, but he grows on ya!
Awesome prof....really knows his stuff...see movies you would never get to see.
LEARN THE DIRECTORS FOR THE FINAL LIKE HE SAYS TO! HE'S NOT KIDDING!
great class! you know your stuff well!
Hilarious. Lectures don't bore, I looked foward to going to class.
very interesting, i learned a lot
I'm upset the class is over. Last clip scared me...I'm gonna die in Germany!
Great guy! You'll look at film in an entirely different way
Great class... he knows what he is talking about and is very interesting!!
Initially, quite frightening, but those who don't drop end up learning a lot.
tests weren't a very good evaluation of what was lectured on
Very hard tests, unimportant nit picky facts on tests, but funny and interesting
Hilarious, Loves the Topics and tests straight from lecture
Loved this class!!!
It's a great class! He's an outstanding professor...The best at this school.

Hard class but he knows his stuff and is very passionate about it
No Comments
The lectures get a little long but he really is passionate about what he teaches
I just wasted a night watching a movie about a sled. N'uff said!
seems like his opinion is the only opinion. he doesn't keep me awake in class.
Interesting, passionate, contraversial, and long lectures. If you are already a movie buff, the class with seem pointless. Exams are hard, reading's tedious, paper is okay and quizzes simple. Enjoy!!! This class is not a Mickey Mouse class. ;)

I've had him several times and boy does he love to talk! He gets excited about the subject, but he repeats himself over and over. Cut to the chase!
Love the passion about the class, but enough is enough...not very helpful in general...never again!
If you want to watch movies, and go to lectures where you laugh your [butt] off take this class. Loves film, swears like a ****en sailor
If you like to listen to propaganda from an old man who obviously couldn’t become anything greater than a college professor, then take this class.
Well, we took this test and at the end of it this kid went up, handed in his test, and stared down old Ken as he walked out because the test was so ridiculous. If you know who directed Attack of the Killer Tomatoes 2 take this class.
Very passionate about movies, and very interesting. Go to the lectures and study notes. Tests are kinda hard, but it's worth it.
Possibly the smartest man ever when it comes to movies. He knows EVERYTHING ABOUT EVERY MOVIE EVER MADE. Could be a savant.
Odd looking fellow, but knows his stuff. Don't sit in front row, spits when he talks, and gets white paste in the corners of his mouth. But he swears a lot, and that will wake you up from a nap.
he is the most knowledgable man in the film department and he is very passionate about the classes he teaches because he love the material. he is a great man who will never lose your attention in class. take him!!
very interesting class, tests are hard but not impossible, lectures are interesting and the movies are actually good too
Don't be fooled, this is not a sit back and relax watch movies class, but, if you show up and study your notes he can really change the way you watch movies. I'm also resonably sure the GA is Bill Paxton's assistant in Titanic :)
You will be tested on very little-known films, their directors, and the years of their releases. Some of the movies are very good, some are very very bad. Ken knows his stuff, but this is NOT an easy class.
Very very hard class...many quizzes, boring movies, and boring lectures...dont recommend it to anyone!!!!!
This is a difficult class, but definitely worth going to! Watch a lot of interesting movies and even the lectures are interesting. Dr. J is very cool and he's definitely fun to listen to especially when he's ripping apart movies (ie: Rocky and Titanic)
Yep, the little guy does have paste in the corners of his mouth, he does say **** in class, and his GA may be Bill Paxtons assisatant in Titanic. But the movies are good, and the little guy knows his ****.
This class is definately tough...so don't miss class and take notes in class cause EVERYTHING that comes out of his mouth is likely to be on the test....its a fun class overall and the lectures are hilarious
Not hard, but not easy. Do good on the paper it will really help you grade. Dr. J is a really great prof. and very funny, the lectures are more entertaining than the films. Your draw will drop when he says that some of you favorite movies are crap!
He is not a good teacher. He is a moron and his understanding of film is limited to what he has read in somebody elses book. He has no original ideas and knows little about film. Huge let down
Dr. J sure loves his High Seirra. The rugged individualist, it's almost like a western. If there's one movie you have to see it's gotta be high sierra. Of course you don't get to see it in class because it's such a good movie. The guy is a large baby.
Awesome teacher. He really knows his stuff. If you really love film, don't take any other teacher but him. If you're a jerk-off frat boy looking for an easy class, avoid him like anything other than the Wayside on a Friday night.
Good films and topics chosen, but Dr. J refused to make eye contact with anyone in the room. He could enhance his communication skills and better interact with his students.
This guy is horrible. Half the class fails his exams and he could care less. I get straight As and got barely a C in this ridiculous class. If you're not into film, stay far far away.
If you do not enjoy films, do NOT take this class. Lectures are fun, movies are old, yet very enjoyable. Tough teacher, and not very approacable, yet fun. Again, only take if you are interested in film, and can follow it closely!
Dr.J is awesome. He makes learing about old movies fun. He relates things to today to make them more clear and keeps his lectures so students are able to understand him. Try staying awake for the movies. They're actually really good.
This guy is sweet for ya know 525. He checks ya know, the papers like a ya know, hawk so do good on them. The man has seen ya know, every movie ever made.. dont forget to tell him how much you loved Titanic. YA KNOW Cool guy overall ya know.
Funniest thing ever. Whenever i was sittin in the class with my friend we would die laughing, Because after every sentence he says ya know. But hes a good guy and his class is interesting. Not the easiest though.
Dr.J is a one of the funniest people I have ever met. If you attend all the classes and pay attention to the movies you will do just fine. I reccomend taking this class with Dr.J, I really enjoyed the experience.
Awesome Class! the only people who dont do like him are the people who dont care. his lectures are alot of fun and i really enjoyed most of the films. he'll probably end up calling a modern movie that you enjoy a piece of ****. but youll enjoy the clas
I like the class alot but you have to watch the movies and u have to listen to lectures. Falling asleep is ok once in a while during the movie not the lectures! Also dont take the class if you aren't good at multiple choice!
I love Dr. J! He is such a funny old man. You will learn a lot of interesting facts about film from his class, he goes into a lot of detail in lectures though, so make sure you take good notes!
Very good, entertaining professor!
His test are unreasonably difficult and filled with meaningless facts like who directed what when?, most of the class does poorly on them and he does not curve. DO NOT expect an A in this class unless you are a film guru or enjoy memorizing facts.
Nice and funny, but the point is his tests are way too hard and he doesn't care. He loves to put pointless details on the test that are buried in the text that he didn't talk about in the lecture. He thinks he is the unquestionable authority on film.
This guy knows his movies. He reminds me of Ebert. His knowledge of the movies, even though it's already a fun topic, makes it that much more of a fun class.
Great teacher--made me see films in a different way. He was quoted on the back of our textbook, something like "this is such a good book," which is funny, in a way. Anyhow, I loved this class.
Great class! Tests aren't too hard if you study. Important to know who directed what and when, that's the whole basis of film.
Boy does he like to talk. He has alot of interesting stories though. Tests are easy to pass, but hard to get an A. I think a conceptual class like this would be better with essay question tests, but there's simply too many students.
He knows too much for his own good, but the class was really interesting. The movies were cool. Just go to class, it's really not that bad! He's a good prof, just a little ****.
Yeah, his tests are hard, and long but this class has been soo much fun. Nobody could be more awake at 8am than old Dr. J himself. You MUST read the books, watch the movies and go to lecture. If you don't, you have no hope of passing this class. DETAILS!
He is a teacher who thoroughly enjoys teaching. His lectures are informative yet entertaining. I would recommend any of the classes he teaches.
The class is fun, he's a little bit nutty though. Has some really odd stories. Make sure you pay attention to the movies, and do the readings. His tests are pretty hard.
He is very annoying to listen to during his lectures because he rambles on and on about stuff that is not even what he is supposed to be talking about. Test's are VERY hard, have to study for a long time for them! Not recommended by me!
Probably one of the best profs i've had since i've been in college. just come to the lectures and you should pass no problem. don't know what other folks talking about, found his tests to be simple if you take notes in class. finished with A-
Good prof. Likes what he teaches, so makes it better for you. Make sure you actually go and watch the movies, take good notes, and read the text. It's not hard stuff to learn.
I love this guy. Very funny and knowledgable. Tests are hard, but that's why they're tests. I can't wait to take a class with him again.
OMG. This class sucked so bad. I took the class cause someone told me it was great, and it SUCKED! A movie class should NOT be this hard. READ THE COURSE PACKET, it's IMPORTANT!
nice guy, didn't know he had a kid until 1/2way through semester. good movies, interesting sense of humor. He means well but it's hard to stay awake at 8am watching movies (some are very boring)
He knows a lot about movies and is extremely and stubornly opinionated. His tests are hard and require you to memorize way too many details like a list of a bunch of directors and all of their films.Has anyone ever gotten a straight A in his class?
Oh good ol' Dr. J! Crazy ****! I honestly went to that class just to see what the hell he was going come out of his mouth next! Movies suck in the first part of the class, but get better as u go along. Ok class, Ok guy, should get nothing below a C.
Everything has a sexual meaning according to him. His class was semi hard, but if you take good notes you'll be fine. He's a sick old man. But the class was alright. Lots of people fight sleep when they come to Dr. J's class.
If you want to learn the actual subject matter, endure the difficult tests, intense reading, and take this course. Dr. J will change your view on movies forever. If you're looking for an easy A with little to no effort, don't bother.I enjoyed this class
****'s exams were very difficult; I wanted to shoot myself. His graduate assistant had an interesting presence, to put it nicely.
I found this class very interesting. I knew a lot about movies before I took it, but now I know even more. If you can't take a course in the history of movies and pass, then you don't blong in college. This class was great, and the professor was good too
One of the best teachers CMU has to offer. Absolutely brilliant, you'll learn everything you ever cared to know about movies.
This class is sooo cool. i love it. even tho the tests are hard. I recommend people to take him for bca 288
Dr. J is an awesome guy! He really knows his movies. If you want to learn something, definitely take his class! I would have him for a professor again in a heart beat. If you go to class every day, you can get a B+ or better.
Dr. J is hilarious. His lectures are the most interesting, even at 8 AM. He's opinionated and obviously stubborn, but incredibly intelligent. No question seems to throw him, and there isnt a subject we've encountered yet that he sugar coats or wont discuss with full, ****ed details.
taught me so much. tests werent bad, grad assistant needs a makeover. Dr. J's real funny and awesome.
Dr.J is awesome! He's funny and his lectures keep you interested. He's opinionated and blunt, and expects you to be too. Be very detailed in the quizzes, or it will bring your grade down. Other than that, just pay attention to what he says.

DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! Unless you want to put A LOT of effort into a class that is merely a UP I wouldn't suggest this class. Subject matter is interesting and Dr. J is a great teacher, but tests are hard and quizzes are graded too hard!
great teacher. hard class unless you want to dive into every aspect of film and the film's ideas and theories
This guy is an awesome prof. Show up to class and he will make sure you stay awake. Hes extremely funny and informative. TAKE GOOD NOTES! Everything is about the notes, so show up to class EVERYDAY, I highly reccommend this guy.
This man has a vast knowledge in every movie ever made! Make sure you can stand the black and white silent films, cause if you sleep u know nothing. Also his reading assignments, you just need to skim and take few notes on. Be there for micro quizes they add up!
The tests are over his lecture..."ya know and umm." If you like movies take the class. It is fun; however, do not believe Dr. J knows all about films. He absorbs what others have said and then relays it to you.
If you like professors that say "ya know" 130 times in two hours (I counted) while he rambles on about nothingness, then take this guy!! Quizes are crazy hard...got a 0 after writing front and back on answer sheet...too much for a U.P.!!!!
Dr. J is a great teacher. I failed 288 because I missed a test and two quizes, so make sure that you are there for every one of them! Go to every class. Reading is not important, dont even need the book. Study the directors and the films they did. (Not all of the films, just the major ones)
This is a hard class for a UP, be warned. Give A LOT of examples in quizes, its the key to doing well. Tests can be tough, but take good notes and memorize key director names/film years and you'll do fine. Don't waste your time with the books, they are pointless and expensive. And don't skip class
This guy is awesome! I heard that the tests were going to be hard but they aren't that bad as long as you pay attention. Very interesting class.
Be prepared to sit in every other class for 2 hours of straight talking. This guy is movie savy...but the quizzes will take you off guard and come to bite you in the ass. The only class I ever feared of failing...even though I was there every single week!
Dr. J is a great teacher. He teaches w/ an amazing amount of enthusiasm. Sometimes to the point where he foams at the mouth. The tests are really hard, even if you study. You will never need the book either. He shows interesting movies that are acually fun to watch. I never missed a class.
One of the best profs I've ever had. Very enthusiastic. Lots of fun!
Grades tough but fair. Flat out best professor I've had.
Probably one of the BEST professors at CMU. Hilarious even at 8am. Loves what he teaches, and knows his stuff inside and out. If you love films (not to mention Silent and B&W ones too) take this class with him. You'll not be disappointed.
I am a huge movie buff, but I found this class BORING. 2 hour lectures are killer...hence why I never went to lectures (and still am getting a B). Watch yourself on the microthemes. Unless you write a novel, you won't get a 20/20. You do get to watch some good movies though. DON'T BUY THE BOOKS!!!
Dr. J rules the world. There was only 1 movie that we saw that I didn't like; the rest were sweet. His lectures are a little long, but he has some sweet things to say. The quizzes after each movie are easy, but the tests are a little tough. Make sure you look over the course pack beforehand.
Amazing class taught by a true pro! I have never been able to watch a sci-fi movie since without mulling over the hidden cautionary tales! A thorough joy to learn from!
After having 3 classes under this professor (including the amazing "Gangster Films") I can easily say he is oen of the best BCA instructors at CMU. Several people have complained that he talks too much (which is true) but what he has to say is usually interesting and entertaining. Highly recomended.

Very interesting to listen to. So dorky he's cool. Really gets you to think about film in a different way, especially film noir and science fiction. I think he likes movies more than people, though. Not mean, but not entirely approachable. Another word of caution - stay away from writing papers on films that he has mentioned too often in class. He'll tear your ideas apart. I wrote a paper on "Brazil" and got wasted on it - he has written a journal article on the movie.
This class is easy and he is an easy going professor. He does a good job at instructing the class and is just all around a nice person and the class is good to.
Most of the movies we watched were pretty cool, and he really gets you to look deeper into the films in all aspects. However, his exams are hard, so you really need to keep up with the reading. If you don't, you might as well hope for a C, b/c it's unlikely you'll do better. Take good lecture notes; he emphasizes important points.
This teacher has a filthy mouth and a negative view of"the crazy right wing Christian types"Aside from this lectures are interesting, but makes anyone with morals feel like they're being harrassed.Tests are extremely hard.I am normally an A student, and I got D's. He picks a lot of minute, briefly mentioned details for the tests. I don't recommend him
MUST, I mean MUST go to class to do good. take notes on lectures because he goes over the stuff in the reading that you need to focus on for the tests. go over the course packet right before tests and remember details such as what actor was in what movie, and what director directed what movie, this is the kind of stuff that is hard on the tests
GO TO CLASS!!! I failed the class the first time around b/c I thought I could just rent to movies and then show up for the exam, you need the in class points to pass. Dr. J is hillarious. Last year I had the class with Craig and it wasnt half as interesting. Dr. J is dedicated to his field and it shows during lecture. He makes class interesting.
Jurkiewicz is a cooky old guy that really loves his field. His lectures are interesting, because he puts some emotion in them, especially if you love movies. I saw some excellent flicks in this class too, that I wouldn't have seen otherwise. One thing, GO TO CLASS. I have not opened the book once, his lectures are 95% of his tests, trust me.
Jurkiewicz, more like just a jerk, he thinks because he knows so much about movies that all of his students should know just as much as he does. i didnt know every detail about some movies and didnt do very well on the test.
The movies are good, the lectures interesting, the questions on the test which weren't even gone over in class...very bad
dr j kept his lectures interesting, which was a huge plus since they're a HUGE part of the exams. he's also very witty and sarcastic which made me laugh at 8 am. :) he knows what he's talking about, very smart man.
This was a really good class and Dr. J is a fascinating professor. He knows everything there is to know about movies and he makes 2 hour lectures more interesting than most professors would. The quizzes aren't too bad, but you're expected to give detail and specific examples. The tests are fine as long as you study.
I heart Dr J!! He has a great sense of humor, and knows everything about films. I looked forward to going to his class because he really keeps the class interesting. The exams are difficult; really study the course pack!!
Dr. J is OK. Test are difficult. You must study the coursepack in order to do well. Tests are composed of details like: What movies does a director direct. Who are the characters/castmembers in a movie. So on...
Love Dr J! My favorite thing about him: his pants never line up with his belt or the buttons on his shirt. I loved this class: watch great movies and is very interesting. Alot like my high school film class but harder. The tests are pretty hard, study the course pack. Also, after every movie you have to answer a question. Write alot and be detailed
Dr. J is very cool and does a great job making the material interesting. This class isn't all that easy, but it's very enjoyable.
The best! Take the cautionary tales film class and thank me later!
Dr. J picks great films to watch in class. He gives interesting lectures. Dr. J is entertaining/ goofy.
He is a crazy little man who can ramble about movies forever. It's amazing the facts that are thrown off the top of his head, he never used notes in lecture. If you don't like movies then this class won't change you. I don't like them and the movies we watched weren't that great. Hard prof but prolly the best. I wouldn't take the class as a UP.
I learned so much in this class, and I definatly thought I wouldn't. It was not a blow off class, but if you go to class you should do alright. Dr. J knew more about movies than I wanted to know, and really loves what he does. Take this class with him if you are interested in movies.
Hard class!!!
Dr. J is a little odd, but in a good way. he knows so much, he's interesting, and he makes you interested. The films are great, I found a new love of Chaplin. Take this class, but only with him. Do not take it with the other guys who teach it. Make Dr. J fit into your schedule, you'll be gald you did.
Dr. J is a great teacher. His lectures are some of the only ones I can stay awake for. However, you definitely need to show up to class, as there is a quiz every week. Also, DO NOT BLOW OFF THIS CLASS. You need to take detailed notes and study, otherwise, you don't stand a chance. If you pay attention and go to every class, you should do fine thoug
I love this wonderful little Dobby shaped man!
A big idiot. Likes to talk. can be offensive, especially when talking about religion. Class was ok, he goes all over the place. Just an ok class with a professor who thinks hes awsome (but isn't)
Although I am saying this with the bias of being a huge film geek, Dr. J is easily my favorite professor. He's very intelligent and fun to listen to, and this class sheds a light on aspects of film that the casual viewer wouldn't even be aware of.
Undoubtedly one of the best instructors I've had so far. He made everything really interesting and I found that the two hours flew by. I was often amazed at how engrossed I was in his lectures. It's definitely not a blow-off class, but if you are willing to work, you'll be really glad you took this class. It was definitely one of my favorites.
The best teacher I have ever had. Dr. J is hillarious, but also teaches extremely effectively. He really sparked a deep interest in me for film and film history. You don't have to read at all, all he tests on is lecture notes. All you have to do is show up to every class (i hate missing this class anyway) and take good notes. It is not a hard class
Literally the best teacher I have ever had. Awesome interesting class. The two hour lectures flew by and half the time you watch a film. Make sure you attend every class since there are quizes. He is hilarious! He is like 70 and cusses like ten times every class period. He will try to scare you by telling you how hard the class is but dont b fooled
Class is somewhat interesting, and Dr. J's humor is the only way that I stayed awake in his lectures. His tests are very difficult, and based on large amounts of notes, and he really never specifies what the main parts are to study. Unless you love film, and studying large quantities of notes that dont relate to much, dont take this.
His lectures were the only thing that were interesting at all. The text book was boring as hell, and the exams (even though he says that they are 95% lecture) are based on a lot of what the book says, and if not that, the littlest detail in the lecture. Good class, exams kick your butt though.
Ok. Dr. J really enjoys his films. His passion helps to make it more interesting
Dr. J is a smooth guy. Lots of reading! AND GO TO CLASS missing a lecture or a movie will leave you BEHIND in class. Dr. J is funny and enjoys what he teaches. Not an easy class. YOU HAVE TO STUDY in this class. Be very detailed on your mini themes and if you have a question you BETTA ASK DR. J in this boy.
I love Sci-fi movies and I have enjoyed Dr. J's classes before but this class had some WAY out there theory's and ikts hard to know what is important to take notes on. Over all I liked the class.
Very interesting class. Dr. J knows what he's talking about and loves it. He easily lectured for 3 hours with no notes about A Clockwork Orange. It's a film class...so expect to watch films. Go to class because his post-viewing explinations are what you need to pay attention to. More than half the people in my class got 90-100% on their papers
DR. J is my favorite professor on campus. He has more passion for his specific subject than anyone else on campus. This class was awesome. You must be in class every day though because of the lectures and miniquizzes. I lookforward to his class every day. The paper was easy. The tests are hard so study the course pack and the small details.
Sci-fi films was awesome. Dr. J is the best prof at CMU. I've never enjoyed any lecturer as much as I did him. Class consists of 2 exams (25%/ea) and a paper (50%). Tests are a little tricky. Study. Paper was awesome. Very cool movies were watched. Fun times were had. Take this as an elective! Lots of fun. Hell of a prof. Rock on Dr. J. Rock on.
His class is hard if you don't go. But the movies are fun and interesting. He is very comical in his lectures.
Great teacher! He knows so much, it's amazing. You have 3 exams, each are 100 multiple choice questions. Take good notes, go to class everyday, and you will do fine. You also write a paper in this class, but it's not bad at all.
Micro Themes are easy, Spend a lot of time on your 1 report, test are hard but you can do well if you study. Lectures are interesting though sometimes boring.
Dr. J is a jerk! Okay, really he's not. I'm just bitter cause I got a C. He's really passionate about what he teaches, which makes it interesting. BUT, there's a big BUT, the final grade is out of three exams and 10 mini-quiz thingys. NO EXTRA CREDIT available. If you do not test well, this class is not recommended.
First of all, I got a C in the class. I went to all of the classes but a few. I got a B on the paper. Considering I took this as a U.P. I thought it was kind of hard. The micro/mini tests are easy. The tests however are 100+ questions multiple choice and although most are from notes in class, a quarter are from the book. Most is memorization.
Quite good techer, can tell he likes what he teaches. it was just difficult to figure out what was on his tests. (Mostly EVERYTHING that he talks about in class were actually on the tests)
He is pretty good prof. you can see that he cares about what he teaches. Grading of the microthemes seems inconsistant. Not a fan of the flippant use of profanity. Didn't like the fact that he disliked movies like Pretty Women, but praised the new Halloween, which was probably the worst crap I've ever seen put to film. Overall interesting class.
Dr. J is hilarious. He makes lectures interesting. This isn't a blow off class, go to class and listen to the theories. He is awesome and persuaded me to major in BCA. Good teacher knows what he is talking about. Paper and Test are difficult so you need to go to class and study!!
Don't take this class as a blow off class. You should be interested in movies and maybe even intending to major in BCA. He is a really good teacher, he knows what he's talking about, and his information stuck with me. DONT skip his class, it will hurt you.
Very hard class, do not take it as a blow off. GO TO EVERY CLASS. Take notes, study for tests, which are very difficult mostly off of the movies and lectures.
Dr. Jurkiewicz is really into the class and loves what he teaches. Attendence is a MUST. He gives out little quizzes randomly after you watch a movie. Not too hard if you pay attention. Paper was pretty easy too. Take tons of notes and study for exams! Basically everything he says is on them. Also, this is NOT a blow off class! Overall it was fun!
so passionate about what he teaches, it makes you interested. this class is not a blow off, you need to go to class, pay attention and take good notes- that's where exam questions come from. you watch movies and take a quiz afterwards. helps if you read up on the movie. overall interesting class but does require work but he makes class intersting!
He is a great professor. At the beginning of the class he says that "98% of his tests are from lecture" which is 100% true. In order to get a good grade in this class, show up, stay AWAKE during the movies, take the short quizzes after the movies, and PAY ATTENTION during lecture. The book helps a lot with the course pack in the back.
Dr. J might be my favorite professor ive had here so far, hes funny. i'm not a BCA major but i really enjoyed this class. Dr. J knows SOO much and you really feel like you learn a lot coming out of this class. you must go to class to watch the movies, and you can get good grades on the exams if you go to class every day and listen to the lectures.
Dr. J is pretty awesome. He's really into what he teaches and makes lecture very interesting. Attendance is an absolute must. You take quizzes after every movie watched in class and the test is based on lecture notes...
Dr. J. is a very passionate professor who is very smart. Quizzes (easy) after every movie so don't sleep. Does say "you know" and "and here's the punchline folks" a lot, but it's kinda funny. He throws in some left-wing comments as well which got old. You'll enjoy the class though. (unless you took 210, which is the SAME CLASS!)
Dr. J is awesome. He knows his stuff really well and is pretty funny. The after movie quizzes are alright, but the exams are somewhat hard. Definitely not a blow off class, but still fun and informative.
Not a bad close, but Dr. J will tell you that every movie you watch is the best movie you'll ever see. If you believe that, you will hate the class. Just don't go in with extremely high expectations.
lovvedd this class, but I just like history and movies, so it worked well for me. It's probably better to do the readings before class, but not incredibly important. However, it is important to go to every single class, because the exams are generally composed of questions presented in lecture. he shows a movie, and then a lecture follows. And
Easily one of the sweetest profs at central. Funny, clear on assigments, and funny in lecture. If you don't suck at life, you'll do fine.
Very cool guy, but class is somewhat difficult. Attendance is a must. Tests are based on lecture.
This class was okay. The first exam was hard because I had know idea what to expect but after the first one it gets easier. All the exams are based on lectures so you really don't need to read the book. He is a really funny old man!
Great professor, funny, and genuinely interesting. Exams were easy if you took notes on everything and studied them. Reading the textbook really isnt necessary, because 99% of what is on the exams is from lecture. Attend every class.
Very fun and interesting class, however it's also very tough. You MUST go to class everyday or you're in a world of hurt. If you like film and have the work ethic to go to class everyday you'll do fine, if you are looking for a walk in the park U.P., STAY AWAY. This guy knows his stuff and is fun to listen to. Good prof., it's just a hard class!
This guy is great. Vary smart and the class content is interesting. I learned a lot about cinema. Take vary good notes durring lexture. Exams are based almost entirley on his lectures. Make sure to watch EVERY movie. BTW, Rosebud is the name of the little red wagon!! :)
Rosebud is not a wagon. Very interesting class. The teacher is very interesting and funny. It's very tough though-the exams are difficult. Make sure you pay attention to the movies and take very good notes.
Good teacher. Smart. Go to class will get decent grade. Get A Short History of the Movies book but not the other one(never used) If u need a book for cheap there is one here centralmich.craigslist.org/bks/1147946932.html
Funny guy but the class is ridiculous. He thinks his class is the most important class in your schedule when it's a UP. Exams are ridiculous and ask tiny details from lectures/movies, some of which seem completely irrelevant. Don't waste your GPA on this UP.
Dr. J was honestly the best teacher i have ever had. His stories were the most entertaining i have heard a teacher ever tell. He tries to scare you out of the class by telling you that no one gets A's, but i never read the books once, studied my notes moderately and got a straight A. Write down EVERYTHING he says in lecture. Come to every class.
Do not take this class! It was extremely hard. Tests are ridiculous. He is also a very hard grader. Classes are extremely long and boring. I had trouble paying attention...it was rough. I ended up with a "c" the worst grade I've ever gotten in a class, if that tells you anything.
I really enjoyed this class. Dr. J was a really interesting professor to listen to. Lectures were two hours long, but went by fast. WRITE DOWN EVERYTHING HE SAYS!! I wrote down everything he said in lectures and before the movies and studied those and ended up with an "A". Must go to class because he gives quizzes after the movies worth 20pts each.
i LOVED this class. at first i didnt think i would but i loved going to this class. if you need a UP class or you just want a fun class..THIS IS THE ONE TO TAKE! make sure to pay attention to the lectures because 99% of the exam questions are straight from lecture. you only need the huge book so dont bye the other. dr J is the BEST!
Class was interesting, but exam's were so hard! i would recommend the class, but try to get a different teacher.
You have exams and micro themes in this class, and one paper, thats it. You have to be in class the day of the micro themes, but there pretty easy. The exams are VERY VERY hard, after reading my notes, and the pages in the book that we went over, i still struggled on the exams. Its a fun class though, you learn alot of cool facts, just gotta study
This class was actually a lot of fun. The movies we watched in that class are now some of my favorites. As far as the work goes, the tests were nearly ridiculous. I don?t know anyone who passed them with a decent grade. The micro quizzes are easy as long as you actually pay attention.
From my experience this teacher is incredibly dull. I feel like he enjoys the sound of his own voice. The microthemes are easy but the exams are nearly impossible unless you write down everything he says for 2 hours. You dont know what you should take notes on. If you have to take this class do not take it from him!
Jurkiewicz is very passionate about the field of broadcasting. For my section, our only assignments were a midterm, final, and 10 pg. paper. On one hand, this is nice & easy. On the other, there isn't any busy work or attendance to boost your grade. He says "YOU KNOW" a lot!
he is the worst teacher ive ever had. he rambles on out nonsense. he makes class run 30 extra and has no respect for time. he speaks nothing about the exams, and gives you no notes. worst prof ever!
WORST PROF EVER. DO NOT TAKE EVER!!!!
Lectures were interesting, but almost nothing he talked about were on the exams, most of its from the book so actually read it.
Very enjoyable class. He loves what he is doing and is very knowledgeable. The exams can be tricky, but are easily passed if you study, and take good notes during lecture.
I suggest taking your computer to his class to take notes, because hes a very fast talker and does not use visual notes. Almost everything he talks about is on the exams; TAKE VERY DETAILED NOTES. Take notes during the films, as well. The films are very detailed on the exam. I barely go over my notes before every exam and pass it with flying colors
Watching the movies was very enjoyable. However, i do not believe that his teaching methods work. More then half of what was on the tests were areas that we never went over in class. And the study guides that he sends you are not study guides at all, just the same Email telling you to remember what we talked about in class.
A fantastic teacher with a real passion for the subject. One of the few Profs that you want to get to know outside of class. He likes papers that make him think, not really a strict grader on grammar. That said when you have to present in class be sure that you know what you are talking about. and you need help ask him.
Very passionate teacher. Even if you dont have a interest in film, you will find yourself being drawn in by his stories. NO VISUAL NOTES, ONLY LECTURES
Dr. J is simply the best BCA professor ever. He's not popular with undergrads, because you need to show up to class, read the book and pay attention--he doesn't do powerpoint slides or exam reviews. But he knows everything about film, he is incredibly good to students having a hard time in school, and will work with you on anything.
Great Prof. Very very knowledgeable.
He know exaclty what he is talking about, but he talks about stuff that you will not need to know for exams and grades rather hard. I got Bs and Cs on every exam and I know that my grade was higher than average. I took this class just for the UP and really wish I would have taken the other prof.
Personally, I find Dr. J to be one of the best professors I've ever had in college. He is very comical and realistic. His lectures tend to drag on because he likes to give in depth explanations. His tests are difficult but as long as you utilize the study guides, you'll do fine. Hes very knowledgeable in film and I would highly recommend him!
I LOVE this professor!! He is my favorite teacher at CMU, I look forward to him in class everyday I have that class. He has my kind of humor and he always keep class interesting. Even though you don't use the textbook, get it. If you go to class and pay attention, you should do great in that class!! :D
He gives you no notes or visual aids. He talks the full two hours of class and doesn't tell you what to write down or what you need to know for the exams. He tries to be funny and does not a lot about movies but is not helpful at all. I did not enjoy this class what so ever.
I wasn't very interested in this course, but Dr. J's knowledge is extensive. He knows everything there is to know about movies. His lectures can get a bit lengthy and the early movies are rough to get through, BUT the actual coursework isn't tough. Attendance isn't taken, but is necessary to get a good grade. If asked, he will help you too!
This guy knew his movies. And he was very funny. Just go 2 class & take notes. U need the book because u will need it to know some moview and directors. Great Class!!
I had no interest pertaining cinema before I took his class. Now I am a huge movie lover with a huge new respect for movies, directors, cinematographers, etc. He is so intelligent and made me so interested in what he was saying every single class. I highly recommend taking this class with him.
Dr. J is a great professor. I'm one of the few undergrads who likes him because I am not a lazy complainer. He is very funny and entertaining. Take really good notes and pay attention in class and there is no way to fail. Use study guide for exams. Great guy and class.
Do NOT take if you don't have to. Very hard and dull course. Class averaged low exam scores. Along with low overall grades.
This class was so hard. His tests were all over the place. He got all foamy at the mouth when he would talk. The class is boring and seriously so tough if you aren't good at just listening.
Dr. J is one of the funnier guys you will ever meet. His lectures were entertaining, for the most part, and you watch a lot of movies. There is A LOT of information though, so make sure you study very hard. His exams and especially his final were very extensive and seemed to be a little unnecessary at times though. All around good class though.
Pretty interesting class. Pay attention, take good notes, and study and you will do fine in this class. You watch movies at least once a week. Overall, I would recommend this class.
Dr. J knows everything there is about movies, but makes the class very hard. Exams are 100 questions on every little detail he discusses. He has no notes just talks for 2 hours expecting you to write down everything he says. Very hard class- just go to lectures and study hard, lots of information. Got a B but worked hard for it.
Class was interesting once you get out of the silent movie crap and into the more modern stuff. Dr. J is pretty cool, not a terribly tough grader, and can have his funny moments. Overall I found most of the lectures really interesting but a bit tedious towards the two hour mark. I liked the class and I'd take it again
Dr. J is hilarious! You don't need to read the textbook for exams, because the exams are all from the lectures. The course packet is extremely helpful and he emails you a study guide for each exam. He really knows what he is talking about! Take good notes in order to pass the class!
Really awesome teacher. Very passionate about what he is teaching. Pretty decent sense of humor. Would have him as a teacher again.
Be prepared to read the text and come to class! Most of the movies were great, but the lectures can drag on. Each movie has a short response, and a paper on a movie of your choice. He has a funny sense of humor and is really knowledgeable in the field. I'm a BCA major with a Cinema Studies minor, and I enjoyed the class.
He's an okay teacher. The class is laid out like so: for one 2-hour period, watch a movie, for the next 2 hour period, listen to him talk non-stop. The lectures are dry with no visual aids, and he tends to include HUGE amounts of unneeded info. His tests are extremely specific and are based solely off his lectures. The book is 100% useless.
Long Lectures, you need to read the book and study hard. Review your notes after every class to do well.
Knows ALOT about the subject and knows what he is talking about, if this is your major I would recommend talking to him about his knowledge. His lectures are SOOO long and painful although and they get dragged on for the entire 2 hours, don't ever expect to get out early. Good teacher just a boring class & his tests are pretty difficult.
He's truly passionate about movies. I took this as a genre study on Sherlock Holmes and so there obviously isn't much to go on, but he still managed to find something to tell us about for 2+ hours without making us fall asleep. Textbooks are somewhat needed for the exam, but he mostly bases his test questions off of movie quotes- somewhat difficult
Don't take this class. Seriously. I have to retake BCA101 with a new professor because I didn't receive a high grade. His lectures take up the entire two hours and are very dull. The movies are okay, but he is too detail-oriented with his quizzes and he grades extremely hard on them. His exams are 100 very-specific questions.
Love Dr. J! His class is harder than the other prof that teaches 101 from what I hear, but really respect his knowledge and passion for the subject. You can learn a lot from him!! Easy A as long as you do the readings and attend every class. Hardly ever homework.
Lectures are extremely long and boring, he gives no visuals at all. If you're a visual learner, this class is not for you. I wouldn't suggest this professor to anyone. He isn't good at teaching the material and drags on and on about subjects. He also is very bad at emailing back and communicating with students!
I loved this Sherlock Holmes class. I thought the movie and television selected was good. I liked the way they were grouped, too. The paper was actually really fun to write! Just know that 525 is a 4 hour class, and Dr. J will use that whole time each week! NO POWERPOINTS.
He's great! Yea, on lecture days it's exactly 1 hr and 50 mins, but he makes it interesting and funny. He's SOOO passionate about movies; it's contagious! I've been looking for more of his classes to take and I'm an Environmental Safety Major! I didn't read the book, at all except for the sample report (which I HIGHLY recommend; I got a 100).
Don't take this class if you don't like movies, first of all. This class is also heavily orientated in HISTORY-- so you need good memorization skills for specific facts. You watch a lot of movies in-class and talk about them. His lectures take up the entire class period and there are NO visuals. Need good listening/note-taking skills.
Like Danny DeVito had a love child with Bernie Sanders and got the best traits of both. I am infinitely glad I took this man's class. So many lectures but the dude is hilarious and fantastic to listen to.
Dr. J is a really good professor. He is hilarious and also very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the subject. His classes are compromised of one large paper (if you follow the format you'll get an A), three tests which are very difficult, and watching movies and listening to lectures the next class period. He doesn't take attendance.
He's very enthusiastic about the history of films and the films themselves. Not afraid to say his honest opinions and cracks jokes. A funny guy. Some of the movies in the beginning are a bit boring but it gets better. Read the chapters but the test is heavily what's discussed in the lecture. Very fun class!
very hard class. I am a 4.0 student and struggled to get an A.
Dr. J is a solid choice for a prof. There is one paper and it's so easy! You have to buy a special book from the bookstore and it has an example of the paper in the coursepack. Exams are a little difficult so make sure you go to every class because that's the only way you'll know what the exam will be over. There are movie quizzes but very easy.
Really funny and passionate professor! Good lectures that will almost always take up the whole class. The exams are a little tough but as long as you do great on the big paper you will definitely pass the class with flying colors! I will be taking him again for a horror films class next semester.
Jurkiewicz is a really hard prof. His lectures are long and boring but he covers material that will be on the test. Tests are 100 questions with "matching", t/f, and a variety of hard questions. Most will have a-e on scantron. I say "matching" because you can use multiple answers twice... Be prepared and know dates, names, themes, and movie info
I loved Dr. Jurkiewicz although his lectures can be long and boring he is a funny goofy guy and is very knowledgeable on film he is very smart. The tests are hard just like most BCA classes, but if you study and listen and take notes you'll do just fine.
Either he gives a long lecture or you watch a movie. The 3 exams are very specific so be taking good notes in class. Sometimes its hard to figure out what things he says are important/exam material because he talks so much. I really like his thoughts though and Im planning on taking another course by him later.
The exams are tough and very specific but always ONLY what's in the lecture. Quizzes after almost every film. One big paper but if you follow format you'll be fine.
In BCA 101, you watch a movie and then get lectured the next day. The class is not too terribly hard, but the exams are very specific so if you dont pay attention or attend class, you will have a hard time. Overall, it is a pretty easy class. He does assign quizzes too, but you do not know when they will be.
Kenneth is not a bad prof. He knows his stuff, although his lectures are very long and boring. He tells you exactly what he is looking for when grading your papers. The one report you write, you literally follow it from the textbook.
