Kitchell is often very disorganized and demeaning; instructions are unclear and obviously not well thought-out; his jokes are no longer funny--if they ever were. His ego is out of this world. If I have to hear about his gray hair again, I'll scream.

he's usually 10-15 minutes late, but expects you to be on time (one of those ones that stops class if you're late), unorganized, mildly humorous, sweaty, but latin is easy to learn with him, good class if you must take it

Never comes organized, then gets mad at the students when they aren't prepared. Doesn't give up time to help students. Always complaining about something. Never goes over material that will be on the exams. Sometimes funny.

he is very strict, easy class if you just show up to class. he gives out pop quizes to make sure you do, but they are fairly easy. the tests are easy as well (multiple choice), mostly identification type of questions.

I already had a general knowledge of greek myth before taking this class. But Kitchell is a funny professor who made the subject even more interesting. The reading material is enjoyable when you're bored. Quizzes/tests were straightforward.

I like that he can control a large class. Sometimes he can be a little bit offensive and his jokes do get old but he is a good professor and the fact that he can be a real jerk makes lectures more fun. Sometimes class can get pretty boring. If you do all the readings youwill have no problem.

This guy demands too much from a student. He has lots of pop quizes and you have to do the readings. The tests are multiple choice, but you have to read the books. He is real cocky and un-interesting.

the man is semi-crazy, and expects a lot from his students, but it is definetly a good course to take and he makes the material interesting and easy. the tests are directly from the notes with no surprises...pop quizzes in class..but they are really easy..definetly take this course

Definition of having an EGO. He treats most students like crap, but his class is easy if you go to the lectures. The structure is set up in a way that anybody can get an A. If you have a problem with authority though, don't take this class.

Relatively easy grader (A's seem to come easily enough), but his arrogance is oppressive. His knowledge, at least of Greek, does not match his ego, which is big enough to induce awry claustrophobia. Terrible pedagogy, despite his "expertise" in it. He did give us some "real Greek" at the end, so it wasn't too bad. BEST=Philippides,Wallace,Felton

I loved this class and always was disappointed to leave each session. A really funny guy but you have to get his type of humour. He can come off as being strict and mean but he nice and is fine as long as you obey the rules which are clearly laid out at the first class. A pretty easy class workload wise as well. My favorite class so far.

Extremely offensive man. Pushes his opinions on you all the time. He insults the students AND the TAs. Once told a girl she was a troll and made her cry. Spent an entire lecture talking about hedghogs and still expected us to know what he MEANT to lecture about. Tests expect more detail than he will EVER give you. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS.

Kitchell can certainly be rude at times, but the class itself is quite enjoyablet, as there is much to be learned. Difficulty-wise, the class really isn't that challenging; master all of the on-line study games, and you'll do fine. It should be noted, however, that a few of his test questions are badly worded, and thus difficult to answer.

Kitchell is an enthusiastic professor who knows a lot and understands what is important in education. However, tests are easy. Attendance is a must as random quizzes count 30% of your grade. You'll have to put some work into this class but you'll get something out of it at least. For the exams all questions are questions found in online games.

Prof. Kitchell doesn't take any crap. This rubs many people the wrong way, but his large classes are well managed. He is the only large class professor I've had who doesn't have students being disruptive during class. He is great at relating classical antiquity to the modern world.

"ugly as the south end of a northbound baboon" This guy is a gem! all those bad things are definitely true- but there are a lot of great moments that make it all worth it. You learn a lot and it's very interesting, but if you don't sit up straight and keep your eyes forward he'll probably kill you

HORRIBLE CLASS. ruined my GPA. lots of reading and the tests are so hard. he's a funny guy but his lectures are not helpful at all. he always says "dont copy the notes off my lecture, listen to what i say" but he either reads off the powerpoints or says nothing relevant. dont take this for an easy gen-ed...because its not that easy

Wastes class time berading students in a more immature way than the student originally acted. Has yet to administer an exam in which he didn't waste test-taking time correcting his own mistakes. Hypocritical, as he fancies himself to be your "worst nightmare" in that he'll treat you as an adult, yet runs his class like a pre-school teacher.

Pretty difficult class. Went into this class excited to learn about Greek Mythology and came out hating it. The TAs are either really easy graders or extremely harsh, nothing in between. So many readings for this class you may end up having to know 500 different names and what each person did. Dont take this class if your looking for an easy GenEd

Give Prof. Kitchell a break. He's a good guy. All of the previous reviews sound like they're coming from people who are too lazy to go to class or put any effort into school. You can't just expect to sit back and get an A for doing nothing. Yes, this class requires that you read the textbook, but the tests are completely fair if you do the work.

We pay for this school, we should kick HIM out. Random pop quizzes via scantron + projector. Two papers were kind of easy as long as you follow directions. The exams however, SUCK

this is a very difficult class. ALOT of reading to do, piled on alot at the end before the exam. need to know every miniscule detail, not main character/events but the main characters best friends mothers step grandmother too.. on several accounts my quizzes were lost, he's un-cooperative, and belittles his students and VERY odious

This is a hard class unless you study. I studied alot before each exam and aced his class with ease. You need to go to every class and do all your reading if you want to get an A. It takes hard work but its defniitely possible to get an A.

lots of reading. behave in class and be sure u go for the pop quizes. if he has something else to attend to the ta's usually give u a quiz and tell u the one answer. using the online study guides helps GREATLY. almost all of the test questions come off of them. mediocre class... not extremely easy but not really too hard

Other than Kitchell's notes being terrible, Kitchell himself is pompous and rude. He gave pop quizzes, which were easy if you read. The exam's are also not bad if you read, but there was far too much reading for a gened. Kitchell was the worst professor I've had at umass and would take this class with someone else if possible.

Professor Kitchell can come off a little arrogant and bitter, but I don't think that is the case. He is an old school guy who expects respect and if you don't act up in class (like the TAs do at times), then he will not embarass you. The exams are rather challenging at times but if you read, you should do rather well.

Dr.Ke is fantastic. He requires you to work hard and think, and rewards you for it. Truly one of the gems of my entire college career. I learned so much from him. But attitude is paramount-if you don't care, he sees that, and why should he care about you? Put effort into learning and he'll give you guidance, learning, and some great stories.

I TA'ed for Kitchell when I was a grad student. When I want to laugh I read these comments. Kitchell is a smart man with some good ideas, but it's overshadowed by his total lack of respect for students. Extremely disorganized, rude, and mean. He goes beyond strict to just be an ****.

I liked this guy. He is SO funny. You should definitely go to class because although lectures are online, there's a lot of info he says but won't be online. He is very interested in getting you to know the material and how to write, etc. Take it.

Dont take unless Greek Civilization is your life. He expects every to share his undying love for Greek Civilization. One of those professors that doesnt take into consideration that you have other classes. Substantial assignments due almost every class and very detailed exams. Good guy otherwise if you can get past his arrogance.

I absolutely loved this class. Kitchell is a great guy who has a real passion for Greek civ, and he keeps the class interesting. His stories and jokes are great additions to his lectures. There were 3 tests, and a few small writing assignments relating to plays that we read. None of the work is hard but I recommend reading and going to class.

Kitchell is a passionate and inspiring man. I knew from day one that this man loved his job. The tests are very manageable, but do not wait until the last minute to study. You'll regret it. Don't yawn or text. He will embarrass you. And read the text book, as boring as it is.

Went downhill after the first few weeks. Readings given almost every class with assignments every other week. It wouldn't be too hard if he didn't treat it like an honors course. He's passionate but moves through material way too fast.

Very passionate about ancient greece. Expects everyone else to be as well. Relies on the book. Uploads slides but they aren't very helpful unless you go to class. Attacks students who say "like" a lot but for good reasons. Honestly is a really great guy who loves teaching and throws in a few life lessons here and there at are fairly inspirational.

He has zero respect for his students. He's rude, unaccommodating, mean and has a bad attitude in general. He has no understanding of technology. Getting an A in a course as simple as this one was the hardest and most aggravating academic experience to date. I've never been, let alone felt, more disrespected by a professor.
