I like his movie and pop culture references
he seems like a genuinely nice guy, but he's a little dry as a prof
marks a intro coarse like you are a p.h.d student-babbles when asked a question
nice guy......can't teach, please avoid class.I haven't learnt a thing
No Comments
if he asks for short answers write two pages worth, impossible to achieve full marks
boring class, boring prof. he cant teach and knows nothing about the subject, also a very hard marker
If I were rich I would offer to pay this man NEVER to teach again. WORST instructor I've ever had. Don't put yourself through this.
nice guy, but class is lacking, could be an interesting class, but lectures are not worth anyone's time
Good teacher outside of class environment, use emails to ask questions and the info you get will be way more valuable than the lectures. Great email help with papers.
Very nice and helpful. Fair marker, interesting assignments. Benefitted more from reading text than going to lectures (he basically reads the text for the lectures anyways). Good professor, just kind of young.
Not at all interesting. Class becomes very boring quite quickly.
The class is boring, but he tries to make it as good as possible. He's a very fair marker, gave me an A- which I probably didn't deserve. Pain to sit through those lectures, but he's a really good guy.. No plans on dropping this course.
This guy is crazy!!! he doesnt knwo what hes teaching, and just makes up stuff making u believe that hes right... in death and concepts in religion, i learned nothing worthwhile, he didnt even cover many religions, just the 3 major religions in the world
He didn't seem to friendly. We really didn't talk about evil in world religions.
extremely irritating, annoying, and boring. very unclear, and seems unsure of himself. i'm not sure he knows what he's talking about. very heavy workload. marks pretty easy though
Prof McKendrick taught the course with a very original approach to the material. I found the lectures very interesting and marked assignments were very helpful. Course material was interesting (Seven Samurai for the last bit of the term rocked)
Good course, good professor
so boring even though the 2nd term gets a little less boring. you write 6 essays plus a midterm and final. he marks well. it's and easier english credit if you don't want to take an actual english course
He talks way to fast and it's hard to understand him. he's notes really aren't notes, and he talks too much and you don't know what to write. The class is interesting, but he's thinks he knows eveything. But still an interesting class.
A young prof who thinks he know a lot about religion, but realy doesn't. Going to the lectures really doesn't help at all and much of the readings are pointless. He knows some people are taking his class just to get an easy written credit in a meaningless course so he makes it hard.
A very enthusiastic and personable prof with great insights into his topics. Have taken 2 classes of his and would take another! Funny too, keeps everyone awake.
Great prof, funny and uses examples that are relatable. If you go to him for help he will give you useful insight. Heavy reading but if you can hack that it will pay off. Great guy once you get to know him.
he taught us judism.. and honestly. i dont know anything new that i dint knwo b4. his religion course isnt really a religions course. its more of a philosophy course... yea! no notes, he jus talkes about "deeep and intelectual " stuff. and HARD AND HEAVY REading. but marks fair...so, hes ok.
Boring! Very hard to follow. His lectures have nothing to do with the material tested or read in the textbook. Totally off topic most of the time. Terrible
Very intelligent and a nice person. The reading material leaves something to be desired and he isn't terribly charasmatic in his lectures, but he's also quite young and he'll only get better!
he is a helpful guy. tests are easy becuz he gives u a pretty good hint on wut is gona b on theere rite b4 the test. his notes are unorganized and topics are waaayyy off. a philosphical type..
Wonderful teacher, very intellegent and thought provoking.
Awesome. Good examples, tells you exactly what he wants and how to get it. Heavy reading and some difficult concepts, but he'll talk you through it until you're sure you've got it. If you can handle the reading, it's a great course.
Disapointing class. VERY first year feel. Learned nothing about evil in world religions. This prof is so aggravating. He tries much too hard to be hip and funny. This course is not worth your time. The readings are long, and pointless except that you need them for the three essays you will write in a half year course. Very finicky about language.
well....death and concepts doesnt satisfy a W requirement but with this guy it might as well. I was looking forward to no essays yet I was completely disappointed after reading the outline. however the topics are pretty interesting and he seems like a pretty laid back guy. However, im not a fan of the tight pants.
Quite possibly the most ingenious Prof. on campus! His intellectual capacity knows no boundaries. His passion is truly exuberunt; take this course if you want to learn many new fascinating things.
This proff is incredibly awsome. Anyone here who doenst agree probably hasnt experianced a truly****ty proff. (look into the stats dept. if you wanna see one of those) There are alot of readings but honestly, if your not prepared to READ then dont take arts classes. Hes witty and funny and very well orgnaized. The class was wonderful!
Great prof. Very engaging material. Did not take the course in the direction I expected but I enjoyed it nonetheless. witty guy and knows a lot about his stuff. and the tight pants are hot.
I found him to be a very good prof. He was incredibly smart. The written assignments can be a little tough sometimes but he gives you a pretty clear idea of what he's expecting to be included. I injured myself right before an assignment was due & he was very understanding & let me hand it in almost 2 weeks late! Knowledgeable & easy to talk to.
lectures are all powerpoint...if you like it that's fine. I just found it boring
Great prof. Willing to help you with any questions you had. Thou the class was hard. On the frist mid term 45% of the class failed
He's so intelligent and well read! It amazes me! Eventhough I have the lowest grade I ever had in this class (B) I think I learnt more than I have in classes where I got an A+. He gives amazing feedback on papers, he pointed out the same things other profs did but actually provided solutions, which rocks. And... and... he's hotness personified :)
MacKendrick is incredible! I've always gotten good grades, but was never really challenged before this course. The reading's are tough at first, but they really do get a lot better. Lectures are terrific, and he's very approachable. I would more than recommend this course and professor. He'll go above and beyond if you are interested and ask.
WHAT was that?? i was in this class for the first week, and i had no clue what was going on. talked about random movies..couldnt understand this guy bcuz he talked a mile a minute. on top of that, the notes made no sense..overuse of large words anyone? the prof was VERY nice in person..as for hot? he stood in the darkness and was hard to see lol!
Hard, so lots of students don't like him, but actually a fantastic proff. Talks fast and intently, but always says interesting things and relates abstract concepts to culture references, like Fight Club. This was the most intreguing and exciting course I have taken at University so far. HIGHLY reccomended for those who love to learn and discuss.
hes a smart guy ill give him that, but he cant teach worth shiz. notes are messed up and not worth taking, never gotten a bad grade on an essay before this. he's still new so he doesnt quite have the hang of it
I have never met a prof before that I really disliked until I took his class. I couldn't understand what he was looking for in a 1st year paper, and I was 3rd yr. And those who think that he's hot need glasses, or you were probably in the wrong class. I recommend looking for a different prof.
I only took this class for the written english requirement but it turned out to be really interesting. The lectures really kept my attention, and I love his sense of humour. I wish I'd seen Fight Club so I could get more of his references. I love his enthusiasm and fast talking.
If you want to do well in this class, take down notes from powerpoint as well as lecture, then comes midterm, just write the main points down again, word for word even and you'll get a good mark. at least you'll be in the top 11percentile who actually passed the midterm. same with final exam. :)
wow. energetic & very interested in topic - not to mention very bright. you won't find too many profs like this & it's a very cool topic - enjoy!
interesting class, very enthusiastic about the subject. very helpful with both assignments and exams. had never really taken a class like this (usually take sciences) so i wasn't very familiar with the format of exams, but still managed to do well. he is a little picky with essays but overall a decent prof.
pretty good prof overall.half the class bombed the first exam, so he pretty much told us the final which was really helpfull. weirdest class i have ever taken, but interesting. the man is like a human library, ask him about a book and he will probally of read it or know wut its about
was all about the powerpoints, but skipped through them too fast at times. explain points clearly in a way that you will understand. open to questions and clarification. keep up on the reads which is a lot and know it well. everyone bomb first exam. was given the outline for final which helped alot. overall not bad
one of the best profs I've ever had...really nice guy.
I had him for evil in world religions. Definitely not suitable to be teaching first years. He is very arrogant and brutal on when grading essays. I tried to argue his thesis once and he failed my paper. I think I would have liked him a lot more if it hadn't been my first year.
i met him last sept 6..my first class in the university..my classmates and i were waiting outside the room, then he told me,"come in!"with a nice smile.i thought he was the assistant prof.lol.but he's nice and he kept telling jokes to the class which made me comfortable.the only horrible thing about his class is reading.he said we should read a lot.
Professor MacKendrick is one of the most well read and intelligent professors I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. The importance of his courses in the study of religion cannot be over stated. Those who claim that he knows nothing about religion only attest to their own ignorance. The theoretical appraoches he presents are invaluable.
He's great. Kept my interest going. Can't sleep in this class though.
Prof. MacKendrick taught me Modern and Contemporary Christianity, but I hardly learned anything about it. He used 3 books, 2 implying Christianity was growing 1 suggesting secularization was increasing, but it hardly gave any insight to Modern Christianity. He is very knowledgeable, but he can't teach well.
He's a pretty good teacher. Do you readings and go to class you will do fine. He pretty much gave us all the questions that would be on the final exam.
Its a lot of work. The readings are mandatory or else you won't know whats going on. The class makes you think in a completely different way, and he doesn't baby his students (but if you ask for help he is extremely helpful). I really enjoyed his class!
MacKendrick is great teacher. I have been a full-time student for five years and this is the best class I have ever taken. He approaches religion in a completely different way and is extremely intelligent and helpful. I would recommend this class ONLY if you are willing to put in the work, since there is alot of that involved.
MacKendrick it very helpful and approachable. HIs lectures are clear and can count on having a laugh sometime in the lecture. He does mark very hard though and I think he expects to much out of first year papers though. I had my boyfriend who is an A student in his fourth year, help me with an essay still got a C. Other than that he's pretty good.
His tests have very little wiggle room to give answers. you either know exactly what he's talking about or not. My class average was 11.5 out of 20 on the midterm. Gives too much reading. Very interesting subject and teaches with enthusiasm but it just too hard for a first year class. I take third year classes that are 100% easier than his.
Lectures are given with lots of energy - never dull! - and he listens to students and answers questions well. Assignments can be particularly hard, but he is VERY helpful if contacted outside of class. Go to class, do the readings, ask questions, and it will be one of the most interesting courses you ever take.
I needed a Written English so i took this class its pretty interesting once you understand whats going on. You can pretty much write the same thing for each essay due. Read the material and you should go to class. i got a B+ but never really went but he is awsome for returning emails about questions and will really help you out.
Really interesting guy, but really difficult assignments.
Excellent proff. Readings are tough but he is clear about what is expected of you. Lectures are interesting and engagine. Most of the assignment seem harder then they actually are. Learned alot!
ditto on last comment. Super interesting, classes are surprisingly fun and uplifting considering the topic. At times can be like an educational comedy show, although he marks fairly hard. Very encouraging and kind.
Tough prof, but very engaging. Put effort into assignments and definitely do all the readings -- they'll all be on the exam. Loves Chuck Palahniuk so expect a few rude comments but as long as you have a sense of humour, you'll be fine. Also, that is one fiiine mother.
Funny, engaging, all-around interesting lectures. Be creative and pay attention to grammar/spelling when writing papers for him, and you shall be rewarded. He's a good guy, I really enjoyed his class!
classes did not keep my attention but some of the stuff was interesting. not many assignments but the ones that were given were worth a considerable amount.
Very tough prof, some of the stuff he teaches are interesting in the beginning but it gets so boring. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASSES.......
He didn't care for others opinions. No room for debates. I thought I would enjoy the class more, but I lost interest and stopped going. He made me very angry! I didn't even show up for the exam.
Some things were very interesting, but he wasn't really open to discussion. Does not know hoe to teach. Don't take this class!
Assignments are essentially regurgitations of course material, more like synopsis' then essays.
This class is interesting, however before I went i thought readings would be far less then they are, tons of reading and its a bit challenging. Essays are fine enough, really funny and in my opinion a good prof so far.
There are a lot of writing assignments in this class, and a lot of readings but I still absolutely loved it and his dark sense of humor. Also he's super gorgeous, which is a nice incentive to come to class?
He is a tough marker so you have to really put an effort in. Exams as well will cover a vast number of things from each section. Definitely easy on the eyes and has a fantastic sense of humour!
If you hate writing paper this is not for you.. He has a high expectation of your writing skills. Avoid if possible but the class is very interesting. We did 4 papers 25% each.
He's so weird, but that's what makes him interesting. He's a pretty good guy, but a really hard marker. He expects alot. Also, he's not hard to look at.
He was not a hard marker at all in my opinion, and he was such a fun and interesting prof, great sense of humour too. Topics for the papers were easy enough. MUST READ ALL MATERIAL!! I would love to take another class of his in the future.
If you can write worth a damn, then you can get a B by skimming the books. Pay attention and prey he uses a whiteboard and not powerpoint.
I had him for Evil In Religion. I loved him. It was a little hard as a first year student having never handed in an essay before. They do offer tutors that will help you with that though and I strongly suggest using them. The course was interesting and you could tell he was very interested in what he was teaching. Very good prof.
I have taken both Evil in World Religions and Modern and Contemporary Christianity with this prof. I am always looking for other classes he teaches because he is such an excellent prof. There is a lot of reading in his courses and a good amount of writing btu he is so helpful with essays you need not worry. Very enthusiastic! Take a course with him
This man is hilarious and interesting, but god I hated him. He's a really tough grader and expects too much for a first year class.
Great prof! One of my favourites so far. Very interesting, loves what he teaches, extremely knowledgable. He does expect quite a bit for a first year course but explains the assignment crystal clearly. Funny guy and presents the material in an interesting way, incorporating class discussion. Definitely recommend him and this course.
Extremely enthusiactic, attending class is not important to doing well in the coarse. Do not take unless you can write a high level essay and understand scholarly papers. He is very accesible and helpful to students, often answering emails within 12 hours.
Always enthusiastic and approachable, he seems to genuinely care that his students understand the material. The readings are absolutely essential to success in his course. The lectures are only required if you are struggling to understand the readings, he goes over the main points you should be taking away from each.
Good Prof. Success in his course is totally dependant on whether or not you've read the required readings. If you have questions about an assignment he will be more than happy to help you. His lectures are interesting and and funny. You will not fall asleep in his class. Only complaint, he is a tough marker.
Great Prof, funny and engaged in the material. Handwriting nearly illegible but taking notes optional, they are just to further understanding of the readings which you have to do. And there is A TON of them, you've been warned. Tough marker but fair. Definitely approachable, just slightly nervous around - well, people it seems. In a fun way.
engaging and energetic about the material. his writing is slightly illegible, and he is hard but fair. fair amount of essay readings for discussions and essay use. make sure you go to class, but feel free to skip the peer group days
Excellent professor! Expects a lot but contributes a lot so the outcome is very rewarding. Very helpful, approachable, no-nonsense, and fair. Lots of essays but offers the support needed if you need to improve on writing.
GREAT!This course counts for both a written Eng. and Humanities reqs when I took it, which you need for your degree in one 3 credit hr course! Learned more about writing in this course than any Eng. course. Made his own good, cheap textbook, still use it for other courses. Lectures, and readings interesting. Expectations+writing guide in textbook.
Great! I could listen to this guy talk about religious studies theory for a hundred years. Not only is his feedback on papers super helpful, but he is so easy to talk to if you have questions. The Supernatural in Popular Culture class was brand new when I took it, so I'm sure some material will change, but it was just as fun as it was challenging.
Great Prof, Great Class
to reiterate... tough but fair. super friendly, erratic, loves what he does. lots of reading, but at least its interesting
Think about your subject and put some effort into your papers, it's worth it. If you're under 20 you probably won't get his jokes, but dear god this man is hilarious so I feel bad for you kids that don't get them. He is incredibly good looking, makes it hard to concentrate the entire class without daydreaming! Not complaining though!
I took this class only to satisfy the W requirement. I didn't like the course material. There are four assignments and each is worth 25% of the final mark. Assignment 3 was the hardest because I had to read a novel and explain it according to the course concepts. The prof takes 2 weeks to give back the assignments, and just today I got my mark.
The best professor i have had so far! He gives the most amazing lectures and really makes you thinks about religion and our beliefs in a very different way. I think everyone, no matter what faculty should take this course and any other course that they can with Dr. MacKendrick! No exams, just 4 essays on super interesting topics!
He goes over a clear guide of what he expects to find in the essays and it is easy to ask him a question if you don't understand something. His lectures are often entertaining.
Dr. MacKendrick is definitely a great professor. I was struggling at the beginning in terms with writing a good paper, asked for help, and he gave me a great feedback. He helped me how to make it better next time. He also offered to read my draft before the deadline. Overall, he is very helpful and very enthusiastic with his teachings and course.
Very easy on the eyes, very smart and very funny. Wears his heart on his sleeve and is not ashamed to be brutally honest. Definitely wants students to succeed and gives you a mark you deserve. You learn so many interesting things; it's not a class for the close-minded nor is this a professor for the easily offended.
This professor knows what he's doing. He's bright, organized, passionate about his work, and quite handsome. The lectures were fun and engaging. Assignments were a nice challenge and they were graded with reasonable clarity.
Hilarious teacher. Made early morning lectures a breeze. Hard concepts but he doesn't deduct marks if you don't understand. Grades solely on your paper quality (e.g. citations, format, clarity, flow, etc) because it is a W course. Not for uptight or easily offended students. Gives great feedback and is an easy marker. His TAs marked tougher.
I took this class as a written requirement in first year and was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. He was engaging, funny, and took the time to try and make sure his students understood what was going on. He was also approachable and accessible after/ outside of class. Lots of readings, though, so that was tough. Totally reccommend, tho.
Very nice guy, but the class was very unorganized. Pretty much just repeated the same thing every class. Only argued for his point of view and if you disagreed pretty much just said you were wrong. If you read the material and write the essays just arguing for his view you will get an A or A+ on everything, if its written well. Would not recommend.
You really don't have to go to his classes to pass, but you will want to. His RLGN 2222 class made my life better. He was so funny and had a great perspective to everything. He is the most amazing professor I've had yet. He's a rebel and really hates society in general, so lectures are funny and interesting. Take this class!!
Dr. MacKendrick gives engaging lectures, as well as knowledgeable and enthusiastic about his field. The readings are interesting with authors that give different approaches. He is clear on his expectations for the assignments. He has a good sense of humour and has an interesting approach to religious studies (less historical, more critical theory).
This has been one of my favourite classes I've taken so far. Prof MacKendrick gives entertaining lectures. The material is interesting but there is a lot of reading. The class certainly opened my mind. There are a lot of papers but if you keep up through the semester its not that hard. Read his guidelines and don't procrastinate and you'll be fine.
His catalog entries are a lie. He makes them sound so interesting but his lectures are all similar and boring. Supernatural and Popular Culture sounded so interesting but I regretted registering after the first lecture. I stayed for the credit but was very disappointed. Lots of essays too with vague instructions.
Great Prof. I have taken a number of courses with him as the material is engaging and thought provoking if you actually try to get into it. Lectures are entertaining, often hilarious, and frequently involve class participation. Lots of reading but attending class is optional provided you understand the material and can use it in your papers.
Pretty much what other users have mentioned: very clear, course mostly based in the required readings he gives you, and most important part of his courses is your ability to write essaysnot to be able to understand exactly what he's always talking about. Required written course I took with him was four essays, no midterm, no exam, no tests. Easy!
Great teacher with great lectures. Lots of reading required but very interesting material. Very accessible for help.
Great prof and super great course. Learnt a lot. Hard to grasp concepts at first, but not disorganized. It comes together throughout the course - if committed to attending lectures. Covers awesome subjects, and paper writing is fun and creative.
Dr. MacKendrick knows his stuff and his lectures are always interesting. If you take the time to do the readings, take notes, and participate it is an easy A. Bonus: no exams.
Fantastic professor! I have never had such a caring professor. he is very clear on what he wants from his assignments, and he cares mostly that you as the student are understanding the material . All essays- no tests. If you have questions about the material he will answer them very clearly weather that be in class or in email. very fair grader.
At first, I was a little unsure about Prof MacKendrick. I thought I had done well on the first assignment to be given a grade lower than anticipated. However, he was clear in feedback on the aspects of improvement, and was always helpful in person or through email. He wants you to do well. Follow his feedback/guidelines, you can do well.
He's a really caring professor who wants all of his students to believe they belong in university and that they can succeed. He cares more that you understand the content and can articulate what you've learned than a perfectly structured essay. Downsides: he basically speed talks the entire lecture and his writing is unreadable.
Dr. MacKendrick was easily my favourite prof! Normally I don't like essays and writing but the course material was very interesting which made them a bit easier. There was only 4 short essays that you have to do over the term though there is a lot of reading between lectures. All interesting, just time consuming. Would highly recommend MacKendrick!
I would recommend that students take this class based on the lectures alone. Professor MacKendrick knows what he is talking about and he makes it fun and interesting. He gives good feedback on essays and makes it easy for you to improve your work, which is based on writing alone, your thesis and arguments are provided for you.
I took one class on a whim (Evil in World Religions) and he was such a great prof that I ended up switching my major to RLGN. Assignments are specific but his feedback is always helpful. Lectures were fun(!) to attend, there were lot of funny moments and he knows what he's talking about. Honestly, I could not recommend any of his classes enough.
Fair grader but ask questions because sometimes the first explanation he gives is not the best but definitely a great prof who has interesting topics worth discussing.
Professor Kenneth MacKendrick, is on of the best professors I've had. His lectures are always very interesting and he tells a lot of jokes( which are actually funny). I enjoy going to his lectures because they are very engaging and he gets you thinking about different perspectives. I highly recommend for anyone to take this class.
I took his class Supernatural in Popular Culture because it sounded extremely interesting. Unfortunately it was not and I dont think I learned anything new. SIPC is moreorless a sociology class. If youre looking for truly religion-oriented stuff dont take this one. Hard grader, but still fun and VERY nice. Speaks a bit too fast. Very okay dude.
Amazing professor, very fun, engaging and has a very great personality! His supernatural in pop culture class is incredibly fun and he even got us to play DND for a class! Work was not hard but the material was sometimes hard to understand, he makes a clear criteria for grading and is very easy to get ahold of!
Super fun lectures and group discussions.
I truly enjoyed this class with Dr. MacKendrick! The lectures were very entertaining and definitely worth going to, he is very good at explaining concepts with easy-to-understand examples. As long as you stay up to date on the readings, you should do well. The essays are manageable and intriguing, and he provides beneficial and thoughtful feedback.
This class was intimidating on the first day, but it was definitely worth staying in! Professor Mackendrick has amazing lectures that engages the entire class and chooses topics that interesting to study. There is a lot of reading as it is a written course, but they are reasonable. I would definitely take this class again and recommend it to others
Take this class! It will greatly help you improve your writing as he gives useful feedback. Expect to put in some time to read 50-90 pages of selected books per assignment (there are 5 total). Project outlines are clear and straight to the point. If you put in the effort, you will be rewarded with a good grade in this class.
MY FAVOURITE CLASS!! Do not hesitate, take this class! Lectures were very engaging and I loved Professor Kendricks teaching style. This course improved my writing skills immensely and I highly recommend seeing the RLGN writing tutors provided by the UofM. Also thinking of using chatGBT? Don't. He will find out and send you to the deans office.
Really helpful lectures in relation to course readings and assignments. I was never bored during lectures and the material was very interesting.
Engaging lectures, useful feedback, and a focus on improving writing skills. Leveraged Unstuckstudy for efficient study prep, alongside the provided resources. Highly recommended, just be ready to put in the effort.
His lectures were pretty hard to understand. He doesn't like AI at all. Avoid using AI in his class.
(RELGION 2116) Professor Ken was a great prof, the class doesn't have any final, the books were pretty boring to read, but he grades easy, so the essays were easy for me. last assignment was a project which was quite interesting, good class for a W requirement, I honestly prefer this over English lol. Btw, (He doesn't reply to EMAILS!)
Professor MacKendrick is a hilarious, caring and awesome professor! U of M definitely needs more profs like him! RLGN 2032 is a new course and I'm happy to say that I'm part of the very first time it's being taught. It's a relatively easy going course. Make sure to do the readings and you will do great.
