Great prof, very funny, very organized. He actually seems to like what he teaches!
Made getting up at 8 AM during spring session for English history a good thing!
Great prof, really exiting lectures, v organinzed and uses powerpoint which helps keep you interested... one of the best profs I've had for being enthusiastic and helpful, definately recommended!
really cool and funny lectures and does lots of group work which make it easy to learn the material
One of my top three profs. Very organized, clear, and prepared. He knows his subject and communicates in a way that keeps your attention. Highly recommended!
Funny, funny man. Don't expect an easy A. Definitely a worthwhile class to take.
Awesome seminar prof but expects you to work pretty hard. I learned tons about how historians work. Extremely helpful one on one.
A demanding and challenging prof. Unlike virtually all the other profs I've ever had... HE KNOWS HOW TO USE POWERPOINT! Overall a very entertaining and knowledgeable teacher, if not the most approachable.
Have to say one of the best profs i have ever had. Knows how to lecture really well, interacts with the class, is funny but to much so, uses powerpoint to the best it can be used in class. Can't say enough about him. Take any of his classes you can if you ever get the chance
This prof is the best I've ever had. His lectures are clear and VERY well organized, and the PowerPoint helps things immensely. Plus he speaks really well, and knows EVERYTHING. The class is challenging and he expects a lot, but not too much. It's hard work but it's totally worth it!
Wow, best prof I have ever had. This guy has clear and easy to understand Power Point Presentations. If you miss a class he puts the Presentations up on Blackboard so it's almost as good as going to class. Take this prof's class and you won't regret it.
Awesome class in all ways. Great lectures, class interaction, funny, smart... He deserves that teaching award.
GREAT PROF! hilarious! he made the class a complete fun bomb haha. take it!
Just like the others, he's funny, interesting, but tough to please. Always available for questions and pretty tolerant of tardy essays. Overall I'd have to agree he's of my top 3 prof's.
I took every class he offered. Wonderful proff, always available to talk to and gives great feedback on papers. He is also quite easy to look at all class! But do not take this class if you want an easy grade (my gpa is 3.6 history is my major and I never got higher than a B!)
WOW! What an amazing prof. After so many HTST classes with awful profs, MacMillian is a little glimmer of hope. He's hilarious, completely rocks the hot-geek look, and his classes are so amazing. I'm a world-renowned skipper, but I never miss his class, ever. A definate must, HTST major or not.
He is definitely one of my favourite profs. He really knows his subject, and he explains it in a way that makes it interesting and easy to understand for us. He's also very funny!
Took two classes with this prof this term and LOVED them both. Super lecturing style, respects students, incredible knowledge, great sense of humour. Definitely my best prof.
Easily the best professor I've had out of all my classes ever. His notes are clear and precise, and he makes the course challenging enough for you to think, but not ridiculous. He puts emphasis on the notes, rather than the textbook. A funny guy and always tries to get the students involved. Loved this class.

this is a terrific prof - his renaissance lecture ROCKED!! - the assignments can be tough but theres help along the way
Honestly one of the best and most entertaining profs this university has ever seen!
Couldn't be more impressed with this prof. Seriouly, I took this course in 5th year expecting to skip the whole time and ended up going to almost every class. Great mix of fun and serious.
He is very intelligent and articulate, which actually comes off a bit intimidating at times. But he's actually very approachable and helpful, teaches really well, doesn't take himself too seriously, and has a great sense of humour.
In short, one of the best (if not THE best) teachers University of Calgary has ever seen. He loves to teach and is always entertaining.

Such a great proff, so funny, i never missed a class! if you can take any of his classes do!!!
Really, really excellent prof. He made the material extremely interesting and communicated it in a way that was both very clear and captivating. Very helpful, both in class and in office hours. Really funny guy as well, I never skipped a class just because he was so entertaining. I also learned a lot of just random, fun information. Great prof!
The class was okay. Don't find him to be approachable, was grumpy and took his anger out on people. Why? That is just so immature.
I have taken three of his courses and they were always excellent. It could be he has off days but I didn't see any. A fun teacher with, okay, maybe some boring readings :)
Excellent prof - very interesting to listen to. Knows his stuff and will help students who make an effort.
This prof is the best I've had so far. His lectures are clear and VERY well organized, and the PowerPoint helps things immensely. Plus he speaks really well, and knows EVERYTHING. The class is fairly easy, but he challenges us all while toeing that line of not too much work. He's amazing, funny, and highly recommended!
This guy incompetent and is easily one of the worst prof ever at the university. He does not offer help when you see him at his office and the lectures is just all over the place. He intimidates students at his office, what a total jerk he is.
I've taken a lot of courses with this prof, 473 is the latest. He is a tough marker (but not unfair) and an awesome teacher. Such a good public speaker. Really good at making you understand the concepts and keeps things lively. I'd say the best history prof at Calgary.
Overall a decent teacher. No problems giving extensions on assignments. Could care less about grammar, as long as you know trivial**** applicable to history. Picky marker, but fair.. VERY helpful over email. online PP is a plus, and no exams, meaning all written assignments= you dont need to go!!! YAAAYYYYY!
I like this prof a lot. He's organized fun and energetic and uses lots of different teaching methods (like PPT, group - Jeopardy exam reviews in HIST 201). Is fun in class, but takes his job pretty seriously - ie. not into slackers.
One of the best profs ever. Really easy to understand and keeps the class entertained. Super nice and helpful when you ask something in class or after. Highly recommended.
Such an amazing prof! He was very easy to talk to and he was very fair with marking. He is such a charismatic speaker and his classes were always interesting to go to.
TAKE THIS CLASS. he is very clear for a first year history course. he's funny and really knows his stuff. and he admits it when doesn't know something. not just bs his way out like others.
This man is passionate about his subject matter. He speaks clearly and engagingly and is very easy to follow. Presentation is half the battle, and Dr. Macmillan has it covered. Good notes and a great sense of humour. He's easy on the eyes too. Like the Gary Sinise of European History
Fantastic prof w/o any weaknesses at all!
Great prof, would take a course with him again anytime. Extremely passionate and knows his stuff. Attendance was 'mandatory' on Fridays with one mulligan.
Professor MacMillan was an AMAZING professor! He knew what he was talking about and class is so interesting. When he told our class that he was only teaching the 600 level course and on research for a year next, our whole class groaned w/ sadness b/c we want him to teach us again!
Simply an amazing prof. Knows his material extremely well, but is not overcome by his ego. His presentation skills are unmatched by any other profs I've had so far. Written essay style exams are a definite refresher from the monotony of multiple choice. If you love history (Maybe even if you just like it) I would definitely recommend it if possible
Puts up with no BS; he will destroy your paper if its crap but will take the time to show you how to write one properly so you don't screw up again. One of the best profs ever.
Makes subject material really interesting and shows his passion for the subject through his lectures. I would definitely recommend taking a class with him.
This prof is great! I actually look forward to his lectures which are well structured and extremely interesting. He is knowledgeable, funny and very engaging. Also encourages talking to him about papers and assignments. If I could take all of my classes with him, I definitely would.
Professor MacMillan was an amazing professor. Very entertaining! I highly recommend him for any student
Dr. MacMillan is a very engaging prof. He knows his stuff, and expects you to know it as well when it comes to tests. He makes the subject really interesting and is a nice guy.
Great history professor! Every single one of his lectures was very informative and engaging. The man has some serious speaking skills. He is very passionate about his material and very helpful and friendly outside of class. His notes are good so make sure you review them before tests.
Dr. MacMillan is one of the most intelligent professors I have had at the university. The man has some amazing lecturing skills. Highly recommed MacMillan for any history course. He may mark hard, but he is always willing to help, and can guide you in the right direction. He did write the Students Handbook for Writing History afterall.
Excellent prof. Definately knows how to teach, and keeps his classes interesting. He expects a lot from you and your work, but you definately want to go to his classes. Really easy to talk to one on one as well.
Professor MacMillan is fantastic. I had no idea what to do my paper on and I went to his office to talk to him about it. He was so helpful and in 10 minutes I had a great topic. His lectures are probably the most organized and interesting of any history professor at U of C.
Dr. MacMillan is such an amazing lecturer - the best I've had at university so far. Your attention never wanders in his class because he is so knowledgeable and interesting. This is my second class with him and I'll definitely be taking another. He marks a little tough, but is totally willing to help anytime and is really easy to talk to. A+.
Amazing Orator! you can actually enjoy listening to history lectures the way he presents them, very engaging. but do your reading and dont put off your essays!
His lectures are very interesting and it's difficult to NOT pay attention in class. His lectures were informative and easy to follow. He was very clear and well organized, which made it easy to do well. I'd recommend him to anyone, but especially people who have trouble paying attention.
Amazing professor. He's knowledgeable and makes class interesting. I enjoyed going to lecture and listening to him. He expects you to do your work, but he is always willing to help you out. I would definitely take another history class with him.
Class was really great! Dr MacMillan is a great Prof and really good marker. Also makes his expectations really clear. Never before have I had a professor actually put a 'mock' essay up for students to use as an example.
Great prof. Really knows the material he is teaching. This was an 8 AM class and he made it worth coming. Attendance is mandatory and being on time is preferred (two minute quizzes start at the beginning of lectures - does not tell you when they are). Overall, great class. Recommend to anyone even if they aren't interested in early modern europe
Dr. MacMillan is extremely intelligent, clear, understanding, and helpful. If you ever want to take history and enjoy it, take one of his classes. I knew a lot about this subject but I still learned more than I expected to! His TA's are questionable but he himself is awesome! He is also a fair marker. (Don't fear his exam) One of the best profs!
Ok - Yes he is lovely. And nice. But be realistic! He has some nice TA's.. some not so Nice. Do not get your paper marked by madeline wood. If you are not a major ( as in sciences or engineering) do NOT TAKE HIS COURSE! be prepared to work very very hard for a B+
Fantastic professor makes every class enjoyable and interesting.
Entered this option class without enthusiasm because I'm not that into history. However, this guy is very funny and actually made history fun. The only thing is you really need a laptop to keep up in his class since he puts everything down on pwrpt for you to copy. Very great prof!
Agee with previous comments. Be careful taking a course from this professor a killer for the grade point average. The TA's marking Madeline Wood's, way too harsh
Interesting material, great teacher, not a hard marker, not too strenuous on the readings either!
I really liked this prof. Very engaging teacher, great speaking voice and pretty funny. He does have high expectations but gives lots of help and a sample essay.
Very hard. Expects A LOT! Beware.
He reminds me of Dweight Schrute. I took him fro medieval European history, too. So... it was pretty much the best thing ever.
Great professor. His lectures are amazingly helpful, he is able to crack jokes, and he knows his material. His marking is not so tough. He made history that much more enjoyable.
Only marked on 3 assignments, so if you do bad on those then you're screwed. But this was may favorite class, and he made it really interesting. You can tell that he is very passionate about the subject and he engages well with the class. Highly recommend!
Brilliant prof. Absolutely need to attend to do well, lots of material, but class is easy if you pay attention and take notes. Textbooks only really useful for studying for tests
One of the best prof's ever! Kept the class so engaged, laid out everything you need for term paper, mid-term & final for you. Fair grader, very helpful!
Excellent professor in every regard. Attendance is not mandatory however, you'll want to attend lectures as I find that he made them extremely interesting, and hilarious. If you pay attention in class and take notes you'll do well. I got away with not reading all the material, but you really should, as they'll help for the exams/essays.
Humerous, enthusiastic, proffessor! 201 was a great class for anyone interested in European history.
I've had this guy for other, lower-level classes and he was excellent. However, for this 500-level seminar he was terrible. The participation was great but he's a hard marker and wasn't very helpful with questions regarding the 20 page paper. He definitely made things more complicated than they actually were.
Disagree with the last comment. Yes, he has high standards but gives lots feedback and advice. He won't do your work for you.
Fairly good lecturer, used powerpoint and made the experience enjoyable. Not the most approachable person though and I received a mediocre mark on one of my papers to which he provided little feedback. Heavy textbook use.
He is my favorite proffessor, He makes everything really interesting and although you have occasional mini pop quizzes they are generally really easy if you pay attention, and usually contain hints. i reccomend this class if you are able to put the time in to write essays and attend every class, since he does not post his powerpoints online.
Absolutely spectacular. He deserves all those teaching awards. When it comes to his opinions, he is a bit of an idealist, but manages to be realistic at the same time. A well balanced person. An effective lecturer and tries to make all student comments and questions look contributive, very respectful. He is by far, the most skilled prof at U of C
I've never had a more engaging, stimulating, and insightful experience in a history class. After every class, I felt like a better person, more knowledgeable, critical, and organized. There were many times when I questioned the value of my history degree, but not anymore, now I know I'm in one of the most awesome subjects ever. Thank you so much KM
pretty decent prof. there is one mid term, 1500word term paper and a final in this course. mini pop quizzes and group work worth another 20% of your course. those are always on fridays. pretty decent course if you like european history
Best prof I've had so far! Lectures were interesting, he used his powerpoint really well, and I learned a ton. I would definitely take this prof's class again. Exams were fair and there were opportunities to raise marks through discussion and easy pop quizzes. Overall awesome guy.
This was a very difficult 200 course. Macmillan is a talented and unparalleled lecturer. He is very knowledgeable in European history but can be cold and hard to approach. Lectures are a must since he covers most of the test material in them. Exams are all written, light textbook but heavy reader use. TA's do all the marking and are hard markers.
Very interesting lecturer, very engaging. Talks kind of fast and attendance is mandatory. Never opened the book cause I went to 97% of the classes. Be sure to take very detailed notes cause your exam answers need to have lots of precision. TAs were fair, never got anything below B+. Quizzes were super easy/no need to use the reader for discussions.
I finished a non history degree at uofc and he is definitely in my top 3 profs. You seriously cannot get a better lecturer than MacMillan.
MacMillan is an amazing lecturer, he makes lectures interesting and keeps student attention. His syllabuses are always clear regarding the course content and assignments, however essay topics are self determined and while he is available for guidance he isn't overly specific. He marks based on a rubric and feedback can be unclear - hard marker.
Dr. MacMillan is a great lecturer, funny, keeps you interested the entire time. I've had him for two classes and I love his style. Groupwork (on the readings) gives you free marks. His grading is tough but fair, and he's great about giving extensions if needed (no questions asked). I love his classes and I'd take more from him.
Honestly such an incredible proff. Don't let the difficulty of the course deter you - if you come see him in office hours he will help you in any way possible, including changing your mark if your paper was marked unfairly. Super interesting lectures, and genuinely cares for his students. Take this course!
I have taken several classes with Dr. MacMillan and can honestly say that he is the best prof I have ever had at the University of Calgary. He is very approachable, fair, and an amazing lecturer. I can truly recommend him for both History majors and non-majors. Definitely an inspiration.
I took two courses with this prof last year and they were the best of my whole university experience. He is an incredible lecturer and all around nice guy. Assignments were specific and he explains them in detail - and gives examples of essays on D2L. Highly recommended.
I WISH I COULD TAKE AGAIN!!!!!!!!! He gives you the questions for the midterm and final out of many choices, so choose what you want to study and you're done! Easy A+++++++++
Super intelligent, really interesting lecturer. You have to go to class because the textbook is more additional information than mandatory information. He was so nice, and the assignments and tests were not hard. I liked his class so much I plan on taking more classes of his.
Dr. MacMillan is what I would call a new wave Professor. He incorporates many different learning tools to make sure he covers many different learning styles. His course is lecture heavy, but he doesn't just talk - he presents. History is basically just telling a story, and he does a marvellous job. He is a'welcome to Uni'style marker, but very fair
An amazing prof, as his lectures are easy to follow. Not as much reading as other history courses, so if you are looking for a fist year arts option, his 200 level courses are great. The terms for the midterm and essay questions for the final are given to you before, so you know what will be on the exams. Would take another class with him.
As always, Dr. MacMillan delivered another great course. This was my second class with him, and he's just sooo good at teaching. Go to class, engage with him, engage with the material, and keep in mind that for you to do well, just have a rock solid thesis that holds up in the face of evidence, and you got at least an A- in your future.
One of the best profs at teaching! If you go to all classes and dont skip you will get out with at least a B for sure. However, skip and you will miss all the notes which are needed for the final and midterm. The only thing that was hard in the class were the pop-quizzes which were in depth questions. For sure take him if you have an option!!
Marks by an actual rubric he came up with. Very clear about paper expectations. Funny, great lecturer. You need to go to class because he puts basic notes on d2l but expands a lot on the info and context in class. Doesn't mark too hard, but the assignments are a challenging and require time. The textbook is required for the first assignment.
Dr. MacMillan was a great prof! He delivered the material in a way that made it extremely interesting and fun to listen to. Attendance in mandatory as he doesn't post his powerpoints on D2L, only short-form word documents summarizing information. Also, he gives random 5-question quizzes that count for marks and each week there is a group work sheet
Loved this prof. Perfect for introducing you to university life for first years. Made clear content to follow, knows his stuff, and is interesting to listen to. Always makes sure everyone has time to write down the slides as he only post point form versions on D2L. Personally i found the group work and quizzes pointless but its easy marks in class!
If you are a first-year student, TAKE HTST 201 WITH HIM - even if you are only slightly interested in history. A great introduction to my university expeirience. The textbook is supplementary to his amazing, clear leactures. There is absolutely no ambiguity with any of the material, assignments, tests, or grading criteria. Excellent professor.
Dr. MacMillan was a great prof with engaging and interesting lectures. He knows a lot about what he teaches and you can really tell how passionate he is, it definitely comes out in his teaching style. Would 100% take a class from him again. If you study exams were easy, the textbook wasn't very useful though.
Definitely not a bad choice. Wants you to follow the History student guidebook to the letter, so watch out for that. Otherwise, a really good lecturer who doesn't grade too hard.
MacMillan was a pleasure. His lectures were engaging, and his exams and assignments were fair. He's average in difficulty with grading, but he provides good feedback and constructive criticism so writing will improve. You can tell he really cares about his students and wants them to succeed. There was a midterm, paper, and take home final.
Macmillan is interesting to listen to and passionate about the subject matter. The text book is necessary for the final exam but that is all. Group work is done on a weekly basis so showing up and taking notes on the regular is useful. Not the most exciting content but clear criteria, a take home final and his lectures made it tolerable.
Loved his class! Very engaging lectures and makes you like history. You will have to go to class as he does not post anything online. He has pop quizzes, and group work so you will have to review the materiel from class to class. If you can manage all that, you will like the class.
For me, this class was not a good experience. The way he speaks is very smug and condescending, and he writes very rude, disrespectful feedback on your assignments. I don't think his lectures will be enjoyable unless you explicitly agree with his political views, which constitute much of the lectures.
I had really great experiences with Dr. MacMillan. He is very organized and enthusiastic and delivers awesome lectures. The group work is interesting and can be creative. He's a quick grader and gives solid feedback. Very respectful and has a quirky sense of humour. Posts notes in clumps rather than daily so attend regularly.
I just took his block week course and he was beyond great. He's truly funny, presents the material in an organized way that's easy to understand, and the sheer passion he has and unbelievable amount of knowledge is inspiring. I never thought I'd take a History course ever but I'm so glad I did. He made the class so interesting. Amazing prof!
I took this course with him in block week and I love this guy. He's very organized, greater lecturer and teaches at a reasonable pace for everyone to have sufficient time to take notes. He manages to the make the material exciting and is hilarious, I would take another history class with him again
Terrific block week experience. Lots of content but delivered with enthusiasm. Super fast grading! Quizzes, participation, and a journal for assignments. Highly recommended.
There is no better prof to take a history course with. Outstanding lectures, extremely organized, not much reading, flexible research projects, amazing feedback, excellent group work. 100% would take again. Amazing.
Taken this class for block week in January. Amazing lectures and teaches at a good pace for everyone to be able to take notes and catch up. I would recommend not missing any classes and allocate atleast 2 hours to do the required readings each day they are assigned. The group projects are also meh but they stimulate class discussion.
Excellent professor. Really interesting and engaging lecturer--I was honestly never bored, which impressed me, since this was my first HTST class and I was ready for at least some boredom. Also, super caring--replies fast to emails and very approachable. An intricate yet down-to-earth grader and teacher. Just talk to him if you're having trouble.
He is passionate about history but he can be very arrogant. He always boasts about his career, how much money he receives to complete research, how he accuses students of plagiarism. The class is open to any academic discipline but is very focused on history and history majors. Allows extensions but difficult and picky grader.
Highly recommended prof for this course, he wrote the manual that is used. There are a lot of small assignments and the course is heavy on practice rather than theory. Uses grading rubrics for all assignments so it's clear what he is looking for. Attendance is necessary because of all the group projects but you'll want to go anyway.
Best prof in the history department!!!!!!!!!!
HTST 300 is a boring as hell requirement for history majors, but Dr MacMillan managed to make it a little more interesting. He wrote the history students handbook so he's very knowledgeable. He really wants you to succeed so he's very accessible outside class, and will help you with any issues you're having, no matter how small!
I took this as a block week class. He was really funny and engaging. The tests are pretty easy to do well on and he includes a bonus question. They marked pretty hard on the final paper. The grading scale is lower so an A is 85 which is nice.
Another quality class by MacMillan. This guy has no faults when it comes to teaching and class structure. Not the most personable/approachable to talk to, but he's helpful, professional, extremely organized and efficient, and earns the respect of his students. His classes are always unique when it comes to assignments.
LOVE LOVE LOVE his class. Dr. MacMillan's lectures were engaging, funny, and well presented. I will definitely be taking more courses with him.
Its no wonder this guy has such a high rating. Hes one of the best profs Ive had by far in terms of his lecturing skills. He keeps the class engaged and even something as boring as history he makes it seem interesting which is amazing to me. Replies to emails quickly and doesnt believe in exams, so if you like papers definitely take HTST 332.
MacMillan is rated highly for a reason! He's engaging, witty, and accessible all at once, and is always looking to foster interest in history. His feedback on papers is helpful and succinct, his grading is generally fair, and his lectures are delightful. Would take again!!
amazing professor! if you follow his steps for success youll do great. spend about 20mins after class adding to your journals, that will help you with the quizzes and discussion groups. very fun and engaging teacher. speaks pretty fast but is always open to going over the material again if you missed anything. love him & will be taking him again
MacMillan is really great. His lectures are interesting and easy to follow if you pay attention, grading is quick and he gives lots of feedback over email and in class. Not an easy A and doesn't post notes, but go to class and you'll do fine.
I have never taken such an unnecessarily difficult class in my life. If the content deserved such rigorous studying and thought, I would have let it slide but, it wasn't. The professor is the worst, TA's were even harsher, andPop quizzes that he says are easy in the first lecture to keep you in his class are ridiculously detailed. Truly the worst.
He's an excellent lecturer and is very organized but there were a lot of students who constantly interrupted him in class. You could tell he struggled to get through the material needed for quizzes and assignments. He was very encouraging and caring once classes moved online. Will take again.
I loved his lectures, they're informed and interesting but his grading is insanely specific and nearly impossible to do exceptionally well in which I found insanely frustrating.
He doesn't post online notes, so you need to attend lectures, but his lectures are amazing. He knows what he's talking about and it's really interesting to listen to him. Notetaking must be quick and the quizzes weren't great, but overall it was a very enjoyable class. I'm disappointed lectures were cut short by covid19
I'm not good at writing, and I don't like reading much. However the professor made this class was extremely interesting. He gives good feedback for assignments and the workload overall is reasonable. If you don't like reading at all, then you probably won't like the class. There is no final exam which is nice, just assignments and projects.
Definitely one of the best profs I've had, and his feedback is extremely helpful for future papers. If you pay attention to lectures and listen to his feedback you will succeed. Very glad I took this class with professor MacMillan.
Dr. MacMillan does a really good job of striking a balance between keeping courses easy yet making sure students learn a lot as well.
This was the first class I took with Dr. MacMillan, and I loved it! He kept the material interesting (I am not a History major), and was very organized in terms of lectures and grading. There is a lot of reading and papers in this class and no tests.
Great prof. Extremely organized for online direction, little reading. Quizzes and assignments were relevant and i felt well prepared for them (which seems to be lacking for other profs). This was the only class that i actually learnt something from.
I really loved this course, in part because it was my only "option" course this semester, but mostly because Dr. Macmillan presents organized, well thought out lectures, and was very easily accessible to ask questions to. The quizzes were honestly very fair- I reviewed the relevant lectures beforehand and had no trouble recalling the answers .
Ken was overall an ok prof. His lectures were well organized but I tried contacting him multiple times and he is not accessible outside of class. His quiz's were great but the paper criteria, in my opinion, was disorganized. Maybe if he was more accessible it would have been better, but as of now I would not recommend him as a prof.
Excellent professor. His lectures were organized and well delivered and he gave detailed feedback after each quiz and assignment. Usually responds to emails within hours.
The class was fairly easy. The quizzes were straightforward and he even gave an extra quiz if anyone missed or skipped one. The hardest part of this class is definitely the writing where you write 2 essays worth 25% each
Great class with a lot of information, fast turnaround for emails, fair assignments, no final. TAs graded a bit hard. Will take again.
Teaches very well and keeps you interested in his class
Dr. MacMillan's class was easily my favourite of the Fall semester. He was far more organized and prepared for online learning compared to my other profs, and his lectures were always really interesting. The quizzes went in-depth, but as long as you pay attention and take notes, you should be fine. Would highly recommend.
Being online, I believe Professor MacMillan was the most organized out of all. His lectures were very engaging (being pre-recorded), he explained everything in great detail, and you could tell he is very passionate about what he does. Great teacher overall. A few quizzes here and there & 2 papers.
Dr. MacMillan's online classes were very easy, just skip through the prerecorded lectures and take a few notes. Everything is pretty straight forward, 5 quizzes and 2 papers. As long as you take alright notes you'll be fine and the quizzes are fairly easy. One of the easiest courses I've ever taken.
This prof found the right balance for an online first year course. No live lectures, just well-paced recordings to view on your own time. Sent reminder emails for each quiz, gave feedback after every assignment, and answered emails fast. Writing assignments used documents from a free course reader. Very happy with this course.
He's a good lecturer, however, everyone I know that took the class got the same grades for the same assignments. I think he arbitrarily assigns grades according to what he thinks the average should be
This was my third course with Professor MacMillan and they were all great. He is very flexible with deadlines, answers emails fast, grades quickly, and his feedback is detailed. Very clear lecturer and he wrote the course textbook!
Not a fan. Assignments are so vague and the answers are impossible to find in the textbook. Makes you buy HIS textbook for the class which is full of typos and grammar issues. Marks harsh and the 15% assignments are tons of work for being worth such a small amount.
I am taking two online courses with professor Macmillan right now and I like them both a lot. He is super organized and gives really good online lectures and communicates with the class regularly. He expects you to do the work and follow instructions but do this and you'll do fine.
makes you buy his textbook and then the video lectures that are posted are basically him reading from the textbook so there's no point in doing both, assignments were vague and needed lots of clarification. it might be just because it was online so if you have to take it online, honestly just take a different class.
I had a great experience with HTST300. I bought the textbook but didn't read it so don't waste ur money. I just watched the lectures that were specific for the assignments, so pretty light work if you do that. TA's are easy graders compared to him, but use the examples as a guide and watch lectures and you'll be golden.
I took three courses with this professor because they were all online and I am not in Calgary. He communicates regularly and the lectures were all well delivered, especially Atlantic History. Quick responses to emails and lenient with extensions. Has strict expectations for assignments but is willing to provide guidance if asked. Solid professor.
Macmillan is my favourite prof; he provides examples and clear criteria for each assignment and responds to emails within minutes of sending them.
Absolute gem. Had opportunities under his tutelage. Unlike McNabb in engineering, this man is everything stunning and beautiful about tenure. Tough, fair, and an excellent educator. Engaging, and gives freedom to find a direction within the structure of the class to flourish in what's meaningful to you, and relevant to the course. Absolute gem.
One of my favourite history professors. Dr. MacMillan is very knowledgeable and passionate. He is very accommodating to students and good for one on one help. This seminar was a lot of work with several presentations, readings, and a 15-page paper, but reasonable for an advanced history class. I thoroughly enjoyed it and learned a lot.
Awesome prof. Available outside of class, responds to emails very quickly, and is very helpful and accommodating. Clear expectations, with clear directions and examples of what is expected. Grading is fast and fair, feedback is clear and helpful. Extremely knowledgable and passionate. Take notes, attend lectures. Grades on a handful of papers.
Absolutely loved all of his lectures
Excellent professor. Very engaging lectures, with interesting visuals and good stories. Assignments involve lots of research but he provides samples and is flexible with due dates. Posts rough notes every few weeks but generally expects you to be in class for lectures and group activities. Readings are sometimes long and not always easy to read.
Made every class interesting but goes through content quickly. Participation grade is easy to get. Expects very good papers (granted it's a 400 level class).
Tough prof
Dr MacMillan is a great prof - I learned a lot in his class and would definitely take another with him. Grading criteria is clear and textbook is interesting (and free), manageable workload with a few assignments and a research paper, plus he is flexible on due dates, no final exam. TA Melissa was great also!
Dr. MacMillan is an excellent prof who gives well organized and very entertaining lectures. He has high expectations for the research essay but is willing to give assistance. He is also very flexible with due dates and understands students have lives outside of uni. Easily my favourite prof so far.
This prof is truly amazing he responds to emails fast and is kind. However Dr. MacMillan marks papers a bit harshly but it's not too harshly either. And his quizzes are relatively easy. I do recommend taking courses with him just try to use the feedback given on your first paper he is thankfully very through with feedback an the rubrics though.
Professor MacMillan runs an engaging HTST300 class. His lectures are well-organized and entertaining. The assignments are challenging but manageable with the provided resources. I found unstuckstudy and the class TA's to be helpful study tools alongside the lectures.
Great guy, cares about you and grants extensions.
Love love love Dr. Macmillan. Super fair marker if you follow instructions and follow lecture notes. He is one of the best professors I've had in uni and has set me up for my future HTST classes. BEST PROFFFF
I have nothing against Professor Ken Macmillan himself. However, in this course, all of your writing assignments will be graded by teaching assistants, who are VERY tough and much too harsh on an ENTRY level course. Essays you write have to be absolutely perfect or you will be getting a bad grade. If you get Patrick Kingston as your grader, beware.
The lectures were intresting to watch, learned alot of surface level but broad information on Eurpean history. The exams were fairly easy as long as you study notes you took during lecture. Two essays were fairly simple, but can be graded harshly (not enough to deter taking course). Async which is nice for an elective course.
Amazing class. Super interesting lectures that are engaging which I find few online ones are. I highly recommended taking this class because there is truly so much I learned in it! The two essays are the bulk of your grade, and I found both of the TA's to be reasonable markers who gave back clear feedback. Would take again!
He outlines his classes very well and what is expected is easily understood. Beware, this class has 2 writing assignments worth most of your mark. The TA's provide great feedback so if you take in their recommendations you should have no problem doing well in this class.
While i found this class challenging, it was still really interesting. It's clear he wants you to succeed and gives great feedback on assignments for improvement.
I took HTST 300 online Spring 2024, and HTST 330 Winter 2025 with Dr. Macmillian. I found that his expectations are not always clear, and I likewise found him to be a tough grader. However, he is extremely eager, entertaining, and he delivers incredible lectures. I appreciated the group work in HTST 330 as well. Highly recommend!
Hands down, best professor at U of C. His lectures are very informative and heavy but also very interesting if you like history (especially English history). Marks a little hard but if you try, you'll do well. He also writes the textbooks he assigns and they don't really read like textbooks, more like fun stories. Also had him for 473 and 300
MacMillan lectures well. Displays clear favouritism in smaller classes but oh well. His assignment expectations are clear and he is otherwise a very intelligent, respected professor. Would take again mostly because the lectures are very well organized, easy to follow, and engaging
