Politics in film is an awesome class. Watching films and getting 3 credits? Fun stuff :)
Great teacher, really got kids involved. there is a fair amount of work...but he's really fair. His class made me consider majoring in political science. I'd def take the class again!!!
Awesomely funny guy. Swears a lot.
Thinks he is the American Politics God because he wrote a book. The class is just boring as hell. Sure he may swear, but if I want to hear swearing, I'll sit in my dorm room and do it myself.
keeps a big class fun. Interesting class. study and yo can get an A.
Pretentious ****! He obviously thinks swearing in class is a key to students' respect. WRONG! I know for a fact he has students grade papers for his classes. The films we watched were great, but he was useless.
Had a crush on him, but I wasn't sure why...
very nice guy! the class was as boring as it could get coz it was 101 am. pol. in a lecture hall... but the slides are ok and his hate for Nader makes me laugh.
Interesting guy. Had a large lecture class with him. Tends to keep lectures interesting, easy to understand. Offered study sessions w/ the TA before every test. Very enjoyable professor.
very good prof, good sense of humor
Well-taught, structured, organized & interesting class. He occassionally cusses, but since I do too, I can't really give a sh** about that, can I? Classes R smooth,Study sessions R offered & tests go along w/study guide. Not EZ if UR lazy-but no surpr
You learn a lot from his class which makes the work he gives worth it. with his personality you either like him or you don't. But he knows how to keep you interested in the dry subject matter. he can be a bit disorganized. not an easy A or even b.
Don't take for an easy A. You will learn a lot but the tests can be surprisingly hard, especially if you don't study. Don't take if you have a lot on your plate already.
This class is only easy if Government and Law are interesting to you. Hes funny and will throw in an occasional cuss to spice up the lecture. Tests are somewhat simple if you read but some students get 20's and 30's because they dont show up, it sucks but be there and you will do good.
very organized and well taught class. he is very intersting and knows what he is talking about but the class can tend to get boring. no quizzes, no homework, but tests are hard.
He's a jerk, he doesn't care about your opinion, forgets who you are very easily and has an attitude problem. The classroom experience is one of frustration and fear.
he's well organized with some powerpoint, tries to keep you awake and interested. Test are really hard, dont bother taking notes just read the book and you'll get A's, the notes arent even worth while. He throws a good joke or cuss in his lecture which makes things funny, overall hes a really nice gu
he is the man, a really nice guy and very helpful. sometimes he doesna ssume his opinion is fact but as long as u accept it its cool. hes def well educated and knowledgable. his classes are very challenging but ull leanr so much, esp if u are interested i nthe subject. have fun
Prof. Manning is a very nice guy and funny guy. He is very helpful and takes his time to help any student to the best of his ability. One of the best professors at Umass.
Well what can I say, he is probrably one of the most arrogant teachers at UMD. His lectures after showing the movie are very short and not that helpful, takes alot of time to see what the student would grade it, pointless. Quizzes are not the easiest to study for, some questions are impossible to know. He gives no help to study for the final.
Excellent professor provided you're willing to do the work. Course is lecture based, and if you read and attend class, the tests are actually pretty easy. The lectures are intersting but it behooves you to keep up, because the final paper and final exam creep up on you. Rumor is he doesn't read papers beyond looking for citation.
He is spreading his left wing agenda thru this class. If you are a republican he will refuse to call on you in class. Very poor class.

This class was a lot harder than I expected. Teacher expects you to read a lot and doenst give much help for test preparation. If you dont have to take this class then dont take it, if you are not interested in politics then you will literally die.

very hard
He is a decent guy, the lectures are pretty good, and notes are easy to take, but the tests are difficult, it's all multitple choice. I worked hard and got no higher than like an 80 on the tests.
The class itself was good, all you do is watch movies. The questions on the quizzes are a little obscure, and he is always late to class. All in all i reccomend taking the class, even though the professors not the greatest.
I had him for PSC 101, and PSC 212, He's an expert on everything that is political science. He's a great teacher. Not boring at all, and fairly easy although he has a set policy and doesn't usually sway from that.
the class is a piece of cake you don't even have to go the tests are common sense and gives you a brake if your turning in material late
i hate politics and this class did nothing but re ensure my hate for the subject. the reading were long and boring and his tests were hard.
He probably knows more about politics then anyone ive ever met, with that being said his tests are hard but his study sessions are helpful
He is very smart, you need to go to class for the notes in order to do ok on the tests, they are all multiple choice but he includes the readings from the book so you need the book. he has news quizzes and is pretty good about telling you current events the class before.
Great Professor. Helpful and funny too. overall good guy
Professor Manning is really intelligent and knows what he is talking about. You can tell he really likes what he teaches. Not much homework, just basic readings. Stay in touch with current event, a few quizzes during the semester. Professor Manning is a really good teacher and provides a lot of notes. Tests are hard. Overall, good class!
WHAT A GUY! K-MAN is probably the greatest public speaker I've ever encountered. His tests can be tricky, but if you complete all the reading you'll be fine. K-MAN makes class hilarious!
Fun Class. Loved the films. Professor Manning is awesome, fun and insightful.
this teacher really does know his stuff..but he comes across as arrogant. he takes forever to return emails or be on top of anything..his office looks like a tornado went through it..if you want to find him he is usually making popcorn or coffee in the secretary's office
Good class, funny guy.. (Example:) KM: OK, let's be Congress, now what are we gonna have for dinner? How about pizza? Does anyone here not like pizza? Oh you don't like pizza? Kid: I'm Lactose intolerant. KM: How about mushroom? Kid: Lactose intolerant. KM: Sausage? Kid: Lactose intolerant. KM: What are we gonna do about this? Guy: Kill him!

hard class, but he was a funny professor and made the subject interesting. Don't take this class if you don't like studying because his tests are pretty hard and he makes it incredibly hard to cheat on them
Good guy from what little I saw him. You don't have to go to class and the test are do-able without going. Quizzes are Current Events so they're easy overall good Gen-Ed class.
Great professor, grades fair, helpful, very knowledgable. Course was kind of hard but it is a upperlevel class. Make sure to read! No official hw, 3 exams.
makes subject fun
Manning was awesome! I personally enjoy the content of Civil Liberties, but I can tell that he made it enjoyable for people in the class who were not interested in it at all. The professor can take 10 page court cases and condense the point to 3 sentences. GO TO THE CLASS! It will make it easier than just reading the book. Allows study guides
Professor Manning is awesome! (And yes, I only said he was hot because he wanted someone to. here you go, professor). This is a great class, very straight-forward. Manning is one of the smartest people you'll ever meet. DEFINITELY take this class! voluntary online quizzes are the majority of the test questions -- very easy. News quizzes easy too.
Smart guy. You really need to study for the test.
Good at teaching psc.
This class requires regular attendance and required readings, though some people can get by on the readings alone. Prof. Manning's classes are FUN and interesting...definitely not a bad class to start your day with. I signed up for another course of his next semester. If you're considering a Poli Sci course, take him.
Manning is SUCH a great professor! Crystal clear in his notes, but you will have to read the book. Attendance isn't required, but you'll want to go anyway because he makes everything fun. Do the voluntary online quizzes until you know the answers -- he uses almost all of them for exams. News quizzes are easy too. I'd definitely take him again!!
Not mandatory, but you really NEED to go for notes. But the guy is FUNNY and really seems to enjoy/know what he teaches. Tests can be a little tricky if you do not read ALL the readings and study, but news quizzes are EASY if you aren't seriously ignorant about the world around you.
engaging
Professor Manning is the most awesome teacher and his beard is extremely sexy
Understand hat you'll have to study for exams, do that and you'll be fine in terms of grades. His humor is very dry so don't take anything he says personally. Other than that, make sure you get a front row seat. He will make class fun.
This guy is an idiot. He is so mean and so clueless. If you don't LOVE political science like he does, then he flips out. HALF of the class I was in dropped him. Seriously. Half. The exam review is NO WHERE close to what he ends up putting on his 3 exams.
DONT TAKE THIS CLASS unless you are a serious political junkie like himself. tests are ridiculously hard even after going to the lectures and study sessions. took as a gen ed and made a huge mistake. avoid for gen ed requirements because its not an easy class.
very good instructor. makes class interesting, and class flys by. but he is tough so you have to study.
His tests are more at the 300/400 and are by no means easy. The review sessions do help some for them though so make sure you go to those. Attendance isn't mandatory but you really should go because he makes an otherwise boring subject very interesting and fun. If you take this as a Gen Ed requirement just be warned that it's definitely no easy A.
Very hard for a 100 level class, but it is not extremely difficult. He is a self-proclaimed political junkie and will give quizzes on current events which are very hard if you do not watch the news a lot. I got a B+ by only going to class on quiz and exam days and doing online review questions (the URL is in the textbook).
He requires you to stay current on political issues for the news quizzes. And as long as you do that and study your notes you will be fine but not an easy A. His tests are kind of hard if you don?t study. But one thing I have to say is that he can be funny. All in all, not a bad guy.
LOVE HIM! stay up-to-date on political issues and GO TO THE STUDY SESSIONS before exams. the website the TA gives you? USE IT. that's exactly where he gets his exam questions from. If you study that and do the readings, you'll get an A. He's so awesome! very funny, too. take him!!
awesome prof...very well-informed and up to date...fun class for what could be rather boring...great guy...funny and "real"
His class is really hard but I'm so glad I took it. He's a natural at teaching and kept a class of 100+ students entertained. He'll argue with you about EVERYTHING which is hilarious to watch and listen to sometimes. If you're looking for an easy A gen ed class look elsewhere. If you're looking to learn a lot in a class, TAKE HIS!
Not an easy class, but very entertaining. Very easy to understand. He's a real natural and extremely funny.
One of my favorite teacher's so far. He doesn't take attendance in his class, but if you want to do well, you should go. It's a really hard class but worth taking. I learned a lot and really enjoyed his teaching. Really funny and a natural teacher. Take good notes and go to class and you can't fail.
Great teacher! really knows his stuff and excited to teach! attendance is not mandatory however he goes over a lot each class. it would be hard to pass if you dont go to class. he makes it interesting but if you are not interested in PSC before you wont do well. dont bother
funny texan dude, cracks jokes all the time, if you get offended easily don't take this class, other than that he really knows what he is talking about. i would definately recommend this class.
This guy was pretty cool. Only graded off of a few exams and quizzes. The quizzes are related to current news topics however they are incredibly easy. He gives you the websites to check and when the quizzes are so they shouldn't be trouble. I had no interest or experience in pol-sci and got an A-. Easy grade, pay attention and use common sense
I had him for two classes a couple of years ago while I was at UMD. Definitely one of the better professors I've encountered in my 5 years of undergrad studies. He exudes a contagious passion for the subject, so you will learn more easily. He is a great guy too, very family-oriented, will talk with you after class, etc... Take him!
I took him for PSC 101, and also PSC 323. He is a great professor, well organized courses, and knows his stuff. Make sure you study and do the readings for tests, and you will pass. Attendance is not mandatory, but not showing up to class will probably reflect in your grade seeing as the lectures/notes are really helpful!
Best teacher I had so far, can easily get in A in the class if you simply just attend the lectures
Phenomenal professor. Knows exactly what it is he's talking about. Cracks jokes about everything all the time. Really helpful, as long as you ask. Show up, take notes. 4 quizzes and 4 tests. Drops the lowest quiz grade. Take his class.
Manning is such a good professor. Very passionate and a great sense of humor. Attendance is not mandatory, only grades from a couple of exams and quizzes. I would definitely recommend him. Looking forward to talking him again in the future
Professor Manning is everything you could hope for in a Professor. He is smart, knowledgeable about the subjects he teaches, clear, and has a great sense of humor. I would recommend any of his classes to anyone of any major!
Attendance isn't mandatory but you should go. His humor makes it worth it. None of the material is challenging, but the wording of the questions on exams is what may trip you up. Go to him or the TA if you have questions, they'll help. News quizzes aren't bad either. Your effort reflects the grade you get. He's the best PSC professor for 101.
Attendance is not mandatory but you should go because the tests are directly based off of your notes. The tests are hard and there are a few news quizzes every semester which are semi easy. The class is pretty hard in general for a 100 level but if you like political science you'll be fine
Great teacher and really interesting. He really inspired an interest in politics for me. Super witty and hilarious.
Manning is a great Prof, the only complaint is that he does not put the notes online and he goes through them quickly.
Engaging, actually teaches you the material in his lectures. He has a booming voice, so if you need a class to sleep in I wouldn't suggest it. This is my favorite class!
Professor Manning is a cool and Funny guy. He makes the class very interesting. His exams are all multiple choice and can be hard but he explains everythin in class. There are news quiz that are not that bad. Take him for PSC 101. He is a cool guy overall!!
Great Professor, very helpful and let us use a cheat sheet for Civil Liberties Class. Take him for any of you Political Science classes. He's great.
Professor Manning, is helpful, humorous and enthusiastic about political science. The begging of class consisted of current events discussions, followed with a powerpoint. The quizzes were on the current events discussed in class and he sent out a study guide for every exam and the final. Great Guy!!!
Great professor, knows his material, and very enthusiastic about the subject. All exams are multiple choice and quizzes are on current events. Use Political Wire when finding events. Not a difficult class, but attend the classes, take notes, and read the textbook and the class is fine.
Prof. Manning is a great professor who tries to make class interesting. Current events are discussed at the beginning of class which really helps with the quizzes. The exams are multiple choice and one is dropped. Go to class and take good notes and you'll do fine!
I loved this class. Came in and he popped in a film while we all relaxed. I came in HATING black and white movies. I love them now! I learned a lot and had fun. Quizzes are online and easy if you pay attention to the movie. He picked a lot of great movies that relates to politics. Easy class.
Not a class you can expect to just "get by" you have to pay attention and do the work to get a good grade. but its a 300 level class so you should expect that. Not bad but not my favorite. He does make class really interesting though!
I am impressed with Professor Manning. His command of the subject matter is 100%. His delivery is engaging and the relativity to the real world is on the money. He goes out of his way to get through to students and get them excited about today's political landscape. Exams are straight forward. I wish all professors had his qualities.
Professor Manning is arrogant. His classes are boring and he is disorganized. Avoid taking his classes if you can.
I love Prof Manning! Attendance is not required. He gives 5 quizzes based on current events so b prepared to know your stuff but each morning he talks on the topics most likely to be on the quiz so take notes. His exams are quite easy but you must do the assigned readings in the book to pass them. No papers required and he is not one sided politics
One of my favorite professors at UMass Dartmouth. I've taken psc 101 and psc 322 with him, both very challenging courses but totally worth it. You can't expect an easy A, chances are you won't get it (for 322, that is). Only 3 tests, all of which are very difficult (A student here, only got B-C range on tests). However, very interesting class!
He knows how to make the subject matter interesting, but you do have to study a lot in order to do well on the tests and his quizzes aren't that bad
Professor Manning is hands down the funniest professor. The class was a film class, it was very easy. Show up, watch the movies, and you are fine. 3 tests, 1 film review (750 words), and the final. Very easy and he was quite interesting when he lectured after the movie. I would take him again.
Tests: He gives you material to study and look over his power points. You'll get an A Quizzes: Use Political Wire, Washington Post and NY times the week of the quizzes Attendance: Not mandatory, if you don't go you'll still pass Book: Not really necessary He is very fair, funny, and I would take him again!
Manning is the funniest professor I had this semester. He makes the topic interesting and I learned a lot from the class. He gives event quizzes which are pretty easy and his test are moderately hard. I suggest reading the text book but he only asks minimal questions on exam about the book.
he's a really nice guy but his exams are extremely tough. don't rely on his study guide for the exams because you basically just need to know everything from the chapters assigned for homework, his lectures, and class discussions.
Professor Manning was the best teacher I had my first semester. He made the class funny and memorable. Quizzes are easy as long as you keep up with the news, and tests are easy as long as you go to class, read the chapters, and take the online textbook chapter quizzes. Lowest quiz and test grades also get dropped. Just a really great, easy class.
Loud, arrogant and rude during lectures. Does not handle student's questions with respect; talks down to them.
PSC 101 class is very straightforward. Here are what you guys need to do to get an easy A. First, do the readings, and study hard for the quizzes and the exams. And, make yourself visible in class, asking many questions. Participation isn't mandatory but will be compensated at the end of semester; e.g. He will bump up your grade from B+ to A-
He gave a shouout to his rate my professor page so how could I not. Take his Politics in Film class if you got to Umass D. Cool dude.
Really funny teacher and makes understanding politics pretty easy since he is so straight forward. Definitely would recommend taking his class.
Kenneth is a great guy and keeps things entertaining. Just show up to class, and watch the films. Movies are older, but aside from a couple, surprisingly good films that you probably haven't seen before. Quizzes are easy if you show up to class and use the slide shows. Actually enjoyed writing my own movie review as a final project.
Your grade is made up of 4 (fill in) quizzes, 3 (MC) tests, and the final. Pros: he drops the lowest test and quiz grade and doesn't take attendance. Con: there's no graded work so if you suck at test-taking, do not take this class. He's pretty funny and likes to make lectures interesting. Im not a huge PSC fan but this class wasn't too bad.
Ready to learn and enjoy a class at the same time? This is the professor to take Political Science. Organized, prompt to his class, fear grader, hilarious, always willing to help the students. Humble and knowledgeable at the same time. Highly recommended.
Take his class if you can. His classes were engaging and fun.
Took this professor for two different classes and is by far the best professor yet. mock court was fun and he is a funny and knowledgeable professor
Really fun for an intro level class. He keeps things fresh and relevant so his lectures stay engaging. I'd definitely take him again for an intro level class!
This class should be a 300 level. It is a lot of material for a 101 course and he is a really tough grader. He's a cool and funny professor, however to do well in his course you have to work for it. The lectures are long and exam study guides from the TA are about 20 pages. I wasn't expecting this tough of a class for a 101 level, NOT an easy A
Prof. Manning is phenomenal! He has an incredible way of making the course material interesting when it has the potential to be excessively boring! I took several classes with him, and I never regretted it. He is a tough grader though, so make sure you put in the effort!
The best professor you could take! He is so funny and engaging. He makes you want to work hard and do well in his class. He really cares about his students and his lectures are always interesting!
Manning is a stud, very happy as a CJS/PSC maj/min to take Manning's courses. I'm enrolled for my fifth lecture with him for Spring 2018. Take Manning, you won't regret it
Professor Manning is so passionate about the topic he's teaching and expect the same from his students! You must come to class prepared and be ready to participate! He makes the class entertaining because he's so engaged in conversations. He's always ready to help outside of class time so use his office hours to your advantage/
He is a great professor and is very funny. A lot of material and does not have any extra credit.
Don't need the book to pass the course, we're too broke. Go waist you're money on food, which is always worth it. Show up to class, watch the movie and enjoy the class. And do the quizzes!!!
Textbook is required, however you do not need it in order to pass the class. Definitely go to class , it's only once a week, you can do it ! Some movies are boring than others.
Professor Manning is one of the most brilliant professors I've ever had - took him my last semester of college (graduated fall 17). Con Law was the most eye opening and interesting class I've ever taken at UMass. The tests were not difficult at all IF YOU STUDIED. You need to go to class and pay attention and write down all the notes.
I thought he was hilarious, takes what can be a dry topic and makes it very interesting. I took this class to fill the 4B/C university studies requirement and I would recommend it. To get an A all you have to do is show up to 90% of the classes and read the book. Grade is based mostly on exams (4 I think) so just read the book and take good notes
Funny/respected teacher strict on makeups and tardiness on test days. Had a bad experience due to early classes. Must watch the news and remember current events. Quizzes are confusing because of this. They watch you like a hawk during all quizzes and tests and he can be somewhat funny. I feel like this class is too much work for a 101 class.
Great professor! Knows the material, explains it well, and cares about students. He's not a softie and is pretty strict about policies and theres no xtra credit. But he's funny, interesting, and is total expert on all things poly sci.
Professor Manning is great! He is funny and an extremely skilled lecturer. I would say he is the best one I've had so far. He kept the class engaging and there was never a dull moment. However, his class requires work so do not take this class and expect an easy A. There are a lot of cases but if you keep up it is not so bad. Highly recommend.
Professor Manning makes the course easy. Show up to class and actively take notes. READ the cases in the book thoroughly, as this will help you to develop your legal skills. Do more than simply copy the briefs off of Oyez. Exams are very easy if you study (re-read notes 4-5 times). Focus on the impact of cases more than the facts.
Great professor definitely would recommend to anyone willing to take this class. Its very lecture heavy and test heavy but does a great job making the cases easy and understandable. He does make you read a book for the class that shows up a lot on the tests.
Professor Manning is hillarious and very entertaining. PSC-323 Civil Liberties discusses major culture wars in history through a constitutional perspective. Manning provides colorful narration of these topics, and you won't want to miss class. Most of the cases are very easy to understand. Manning was also super accommodating during the COVID-19.
This was my third course with Professor Manning. Many use it as a prelaw course to prep for law school. However, it's useful for all majors. Clear grading criteria with a 15-page paper and a final exam covering most of the grade. Read the textbook, engage in class and follow current events in the Supreme Court and this class will be a lot of fun.
He always makes class interesting, and always makes time for students outside of class, even if youre no longer his student. The class is simple, read about the cases and know them for class. The exams are straight forward, nothing is a question. Im glad I took 322!
A real gem of a professor. Took his PSC 213 class in Law and Courts in film which was very interesting and my favorite elective ever. The movies are awesome and you learn a lot about the laws in USA. Hes a very easy grader and is quick to help you out and answer any questions. He seems to be very understanding and cares for his students. Take him
Professor Manning is super funny during his lectures, always making clever analogies. He's good at connecting what we're learning to the real world by pointing out how the skills we're learning are valuable, but also paints a realistic image that life is not easy, which I appreciated. Very engaging with the material, you can ask him anything!
Prof. Manning is very engaging and gives good lectures. Course has 3 quizzes, all online open note. YOU MUST DO TEXTBOOK READINGS TO PASS QUIZZES. Doing one paper is required for this course, but you pick the topic, and the word requirements are a very low bar.
A professor that will force you to speak up in discussions, but will always make you feel valued and make you laugh during it. You can tell he cares about students and what he teaches. His blended film class consists of a few tests, a final paper, and simple feedback quizzes about your opinion of the films. And it only meets once a week!
Professor Manning makes this blended film class engaging. Textbook is helpful but not required. Use Unstuck study and go to class - you'll get an easy A!
I really enjoyed Prof. Manning. He was fun, professional, knowledgeable, and passionate!
If you need a capstone TAKE THIS ONE ESPECIALLY WITH MANNING, fantastic professor! Lectures 10/10, papers 10/10, exams 10/10, although one class he had an in person exam in a blue book, EASY! You'll get an easy grade with him!! He's a sweetheart and understanding with students honestly the kindest professor I've interacted with in UMD, had him two
This class was labeled as a MW class but we only met in person on Wednesday for class discussion. If you don't do the work HE WILL PERSONALLY CALL YOU OUT and add your name in the powerpoint for that lecture lol. The homework was pretty consistent: watch the films take the small quiz and read the book. This is that easy elective you're looking for.
