His notes are superb. Very clear and concise. The notes were more helpful than him. He is very organized, but there is no room for improvement. Only exams are factored in to the final grade. He talks at you for an hour and 15 and you listen. No participation needed. Ace the the tests = Ace the class
Notes are clear, but he is condesending and smug. He did not like any class participation, including questions. Tests are tricky.
Really apathetic, unclear, and incredibly boring. Not a very approachable or personable guy. Made economics a lot more difficult, and confusing than was necessary, especially for an Intro class.
He is extremely organized and his notes are very helpful. The class is just an hour and a half lecture with little if any class participation. I felt some of his lectures were pushing conservative viewpoints using economic theories. Doing well on the tests is crucial.
THE FIRST PROFESSOR I EVER HAD IN ECONOMICS. SPARKED MY INTEREST IN THE SUBJECT. HE'S PASSIONATE AND KNOWLEDGEBLE ABOUT ECONOMICS
This professor was very passionate about his subject. Taught me econimics on a much higher level then i ever knew it. He was very helpful and answered all my questions. It is very important to listen during lectures cuz otherwise you wont understand his notes. Exams are hard but in his class a 70 is an A. If you are ready to do the work then take h
he's smug, his class is boring and he taught NOTHING~~though 80 and up are considered as "A"...i fall asleep in almost his every class and i read his notes and the book myself. he seems indifferent for his students and he's kinda smug. he is not a patient pro towards his students either. aplia, notes and book guarantee u "A" and no knowlege in eco.
very very boring, i've never been uninterested in any professors i have ever had in the past until now. his lectures are right off the book, you might as well not even go to class bc his grades are only based on your exams no participation needed. he gives too much work, he expects u to read the whole book like you have no life.
I liked him a lot. He really was a GREAT professor. I totally recommend him. I thought the tuition money I paid to Hunter was not waste at all for this prof.
I highly recommend this professor! Yes, he is boring, but by using aplia he makes you read the book and notes every week, so you don't have to study that hard before the exams!
I'm taking his class right now...he never replies my emails! He doesn't like to take a lot of questions at the lectures. If you don't listen to him closely his notes will look like gibberish. I would see lots of people asleep while lecturing. But if you are a book worm (3 books) and love answering tricky questions then he's the teacher for you.
He is definitely organized. His homeworks and quizzes have to be completed in the social sciences lab at school. His class is boring, he usually goes over the class time. Make sure you read everything and you'll do fine.
I couldn't hear his voice in that huge room.so boring...
I really love his class!!! He has so much love for Economics and teaches you Eco by examples from the real world!!! Test are easy if you come to class and listen to what he is saying! Take good notes! He is really good!!!
Great professor. The class is easy if you come to lecture and listen to what he says. The examples he uses help clarify concepts a lot.
Great Professor. Relates economics to the real world to better understand them. It's a big lecture and he doesn't take attendence but it's crucial you're there to hear his lectures because the ork can get confusing if you don't. a midterm, final, and 12 hw's. 70-100 gets you an A, 60's a B, etc. He gives you every tool possible to do well.
Very good professor. Told some great stories that related directly to his lessons. Good choice for reading (The Armchair Economist and Murder at the Margin). He put curves on both the mid term and final so getting high grades isn't really necessary - a 70 will help you get at least a B.
Horrible and boring professor,;quizzes and tests are incomprehensible and likes to make them seem like a comprehension test instead of an economics test. Lulls you to sleep in 5 minutes - stopped going after 8 lecs-total waste of my money+time. refund for my money. plzkthxgtfo -_-; fk'n horrible experience w/ first college economics. gg proffessor!
annoying quizzes evry wk but they help you study 4 exams, make sure you come 2 class so u understand his slides, if u get those, trust me, u will def get higher than a 70, i ended with an 90 in total and got an A+ he xplains the material really well, go to his office hours if u don't get a concept, understand these concepts n exams r not a problem
Great professor, great lectures. It was easy because everyhing is organised well, and available online. Midterm was tricky but since you need only 70% for A, it was fine.
Prof M began the semester on a negative note, complaining about his last semester. He went on to provide the most boring coverage of a topic I have ever experienced. Staying awake will be a battle,I saw dozens of kids being lulled to sleep.Prides himself on teaching out of the box by lecturing on Amazonian birds but then tests on dollars and cents
This class is boring, the professor is boring. I was a little excited about this class, but he totally changed my views on Economics. This class was a lecture, and you will fall asleep in it. The only good thing is that the grades are weighted, so if you have a real bad grades, it can be increased by a small amount.
McLaughlin covered about 7 slides of notes per lecture, spending about 15-20 minutes on slides comprised of less than 20 words. He was ALWAYS behind in lectures, and slow in posting grades.Provided course grades a day after the drop cut off date.Like others mentioned he is INCREDIBLY boring in his teaching. Bring coffee, I am not joking.
Poor coverage of graphs.Lectured on MacBeth and Birds, then tested us on economics dichotomy. Bring a pillow if you insist on taking economics with him
Lazy and Boring, put even the most astute students to bed.Took forever to post exam grades and homework grades.Updated blackboard grades 2 times over the semester, once after the drop date passed, then the second time when the class was over. Useless, utterly useless. Always ran behind and ran out of time for graphs, the most important part.
Lol bring a pillow.
Interesting course, if you read the text that go along with the course. He brings a wonderful perspective that is refreshing. Homeworks can be tricky, but if you take your time and occasionally skim the textbook you will be fine. Though its a lecture, I found it very interesting because wide range of topics introduced to apply economic theory.
it's a hard course, but he's a cool teacher. knows a LOT. h.w.'s and quizzes, tests a bit difficult since theyre graded, but he curved like 30 points so everything was fine. uses the texts, but i just skimmed the textbook and read the other one- very interesting ideas. makes your brain work. was sleepy in class a few times, but not THAT boring.
bloody hell
Three books to reed, homework every week, quizes on the book to make shore you keep up with reading. Tests are not easy, curve might help you a little. If you take the class to just swing by, not the best chice, but overall you get your money's worth. Does not put up the grades in a timelly manner. i would actually think again if I had to take him.
McLaughlin is the best. Seriously. He presents everything straight forward and broken down. His exams can be tricky, but there are no surprised. Read the book, do the hw, attend lecture and you'll be fine. He can also come off as arrogant but he's very approachable.
Great professor + material. Attendance not req. but necessary. You must be able to handle complex concepts + take notes. Not a number-crunching course, rather solid Labor Economics concepts. Exams=short answer and T/F+justify. Tough, but heavily curved. Some great applications and sidebars as course progresses away from the mechanics early on.
I take notes in the class and do HW so I do not read textbook much, and I got A+ on midterms. He is very organized, give his own examples, give away candies for thanksgiving, uses aplia.com for hw which is great, hw is 20% of the grade, plus 4% extra credit. I think that his grades on this site are not realistic and should be much higher.
A very intelligent man but not a good teacher. He knows economics but is just not the best at explaining. Probably the hardest tests I have ever taken and I am an A student. Instead of just true and false questions he gives the option of true, false, or UNCERTAIN. I will never take his classes again.
This guy is the worst teacher in the world. Doesn't prepare you for exams, very unhelpful and pretty much an a$$. Got a C in his class but he failed close to 40% of the people. Absolutely ridiculous! Don't be stupid, stay away from this guy.
Extreme boring class which make me fall asleep. He just read from powerpoint and doesn't explain well.Fair grader. 2 midterms and 1 final consist of multiple choice questions which are a little bit hard. I'm very disappointed for him.
I do not agree with all the negative comments. I took this professor twice and i love the way he teaches. Gives you examples from the real world not just definitions. Actually teaches you to THINK. Easy A if you come to class. Exams are straight from his notes, and yes you do need to THINK a little to get the right answer.
does not care use old question papers for 1993 etc
This is one of the most outstanding professors in the economics department at Hunter. He is VERY organized and is easy to follow. Uses a lot of online resources such as blackboard and the course website. Answers emails. EXTREMELY straight forward. Will always answer any questions no matter how "stupid" or obsurd
Don't bother if you're looking for an easy A.
Pros: Straightforward, Tests from the notes, attendance not mandatory, interesting viewpoints. Cons: Difficult tests (even if they're from the notes), homework every week, a voice that will put you right to sleep.
Great teacher! Heavily curved course. His class in interesting in the way that he assigns three "puzzles" per lecture, and makes these far-off economic theories relevant to everyday life. Quizzes are easy peasy, tests a bit harder. Follow the readings, take supplementary notes and you'll do well!
This prof. may know economics well, but he is the WORST teacher. his lectures are boring, it does not help to attend, He doesn't try, the notes, slides and book are completely irrelevant to the tests. he never gives examples and when you ask him to explain something he can't explain it so we understand. and he tries to trick you on tests.
He's an okay professor but his tests are really hard!!! My friend who is an economics major saw the midterm and even she agreed it was too hard for an intro to eco class. His homeworks are okay if you read the textbook. The final was hard and I noe others agree with me. I really hope he gives a good curving for the grades!!!
McLaughlin is solid. Read the textbook and study the notes carefully. Special emphasis on the notes, as he seems to lean towards them when making out the quizzes and tests.
VERY BORING PROFESSOR. You WILL fall asleep during lecture. His tests are extremely difficult, homework and quizzes not so much. One good thing about his class is a 70 is an A-, so if you don't pass, you really just did not bother at all. I have heard that he's one of the better Eco 100 professors, so consider him if there's no one else.
Indifferent. Kind of boring but kind of easy at the same time.
I took him despite reading all the negative reviews (big mistake) and I gotta say everyone was right one the money! Lectures are so BORING! The longest hour and 15 mins of my life! The homework and tests are very hard. Avoid! I don't recommend him at all! Take at your own risk.
VERY BORING!! Also, his tests are hard. I used to be interested in economics, but he has killed it for me! AVOID!!!
Despite of what everyone else says I have to say that this was one of my fav classes. The teacher does depend on the slides but that's helpful bc I can always go back to these slides for reference. The test are easy and curved. I never got below A and I didn't study that much. Just go to class and pay attention, he gives a lot of clues for the test
Eco 100 can be incredibly enlightening if you can avoid the urge to snooze! You have to pay attention, follow the graphs/logic and you will learn a great deal. A very smart guy who will share all sorts of tidbits that can be applied outside of the classroom. If you snooze you lose. If you can keep yourself awake, take this class, its very rewarding
this guy is really strict about keeping to his lectures. if you have a question, he often won't answer it fully or at all. if we didnt get to finish, next class he would always continue the lecture, plus start a new one. class ran late every time. ill give him this: he loves his subject and really wants you to understand the concepts.
This class is boring but the professor is alright. Relies on his powerpoint and tries to connect econ ideas to everyday world. There's 12 hw, lowest 2 scores dropped, 3 quizzes, 2 exams and the class is curved.
I enjoy economics. But with this professor it was a waste of tuition. I was hoping to get more out of this since I wanted to major with economics but this was a fail. He has a dry lecture and rereads what the textbook says instead of explaining it in simpler terms. It makes me wonder why professors teach when they know they are boring the class..
This professor here is one of them, book teachers, always reading straight from the book, never bother to explain himself twice. Just dry and boring, try to do his work, it just didn't work out
I dig this guy. He explain economics concepts in real world situation through application and exams are curved.
He is an actual professor. Not one of those that spoon feeds you material. He is not a personable guy, although he tries. His class isn't that bad, but you do have to work for your grade. He is very organized but exams are tough- if you don't mind actually learning a thing or two in class he is pretty decent. I feel the other ratings here are harsh
the hardest part of this class is staying awake. There is something about his voice that just put you right to sleep...nevertheless if u do manage to stay awake you'll discover he's not a bad professor. His slides are really useful for the test... if you study them you dont even need to read the book. hw are usually pretty easy.
Technically he uses the textbook because all his slides come from it, but you don't need to buy it all. Simply print out his daily slide shows and use those for your study notes! Just show up to class, listen to him talk (although attendance is required, participation is not) and do good on the exams. Although questions on his exams are a bit tricky, it's okay because their supposed to be and that's why his grading system is different: a C is like an A- or something like that.
He basically explains the class off slides. Homework and tests are easy if you're good at math and pay attention.
Overall, he's a really good professor and probably the best economics professor I had so far. He presents the material in an organized matter and explains everything pretty well. It's very important to do the homework because it puts the material together and really bring up your grade. His exams are a little tricky, but the curve helps a lot.
You don't need the textbook, he lectures off of powerpoints and I used those to study. Be sure to pay attention in class because he talks about specifics in the lecture that aren't really in the notes that will show up on the homework. The homework is online and a pain, but he drops your lowest scores, which helps out a lot.
Homeworks / tests / lectures are totally unrelated to each other. He presents opinionated statements as fact. The one good thing about this guy is that his voice is like smooth jazz.
good luck getting a good grade in his class. do credit/nc if you starting to do bad after the midterm. hws and quizzes could help a bit but overall, it's not an easy A at all.
Teaches from slides so it can get boring but overall he's very clear
He told the whole class exams were curve n had everyone think they were going to pass!!! Good in get a good grade in his class
Don't bother with this guy. Seriously, I put in way too many hour studying for the homework he gives. If you have a job. Don't take this guy. You've been warned....
Terrible Professor!!!!
His labor economics course was an awesome experience. You will learn a lot about the different factors that affect wages, unions, wage inequality, and even wage discrimination. His tests are really difficult but if you make sure to fully grasp the concepts in each chapter beforehand, you will do fine. He does curve exams. Would highly recommend.
He uses a custom textbook that he personally wrote for ECO 345. Digital copy is free. The class is often dry and technical and confusing, and exam questions are all custom multiple-choice and quite difficult. Luckily, he curves a ridiculous amount so even if you get 75's on tests you'll get an A overall. MANDATORY, graded participation w/ clickers.
He wrote the textbook so he forces you to buy it and bases everything it. Then he just talks about his own research and barely covers what is going on in the homework, he wants you to "learn on your own." So he pretty much shows up to class and reads off a PowerPoint and doesn't leave time for you to write anything down.
This class is based heavily on the book! That being said, make sure you buy the book and read it like a bible because you will need it to clarify the materials in class. The book is interesting but can get confusing since a lot of the formulas used in the graph are not explained. Make sure you know the concepts well, the exams are hard.
I took this course to fulfill my Minor in Econ and it was probably the worst mistake ever. This course is difficult and Professor McLaughlin is somewhat of a rude condescending professor. He does not make the material interesting and his homework's,quizzes, midterm, and final are hard. He takes attendance by having pop-up warm up questions.
The professor is condescending during lectures and looks down on students who ask questions that challenge theories. He does not explain why students may be wrong. His lectures are dry and his voice trails off towards the end of the sentence. HW questions do not match test questions. He also grades essays unnecessarily harsh. I don't recommend.
Before taking this course I had a 3.8 GPA which was ruined. This man is ridiculously boring and makes the simplest concepts so confusing. Avoid if you can!
This professor is absolute trash. He doesnt explain anything he just keeps saying think about it or use your intuition. What exactly do you get paid for Im supposed to teach myself?? I absolutely hate professors like him! He needs to retire ASAP.
Not objective grades
I've taken a lot of professors at Hunter. But this guy takes the cake as the hardest one I've ever had (Bombed my GPA). His tests are really difficult, you can read the book, do the HW, take the warm up quizzes, but when you get to those tests. It hits you like a truck. His class to me, was way more difficult compared to Econ 321 (Econmetrics).
Dont take him. Do yourself a favor
Listen to everyone else: he's a nice guy but don't take this class. He uses econometric models to explain everything; an elective should not be this difficult. Econometrics was easier for me. There is a homework due every class + a quiz at the beginning of every class as a proxy for attendance. The tests are ridiculously hard for no reason.
Attendance is not mandatory. There are 3 midterms and he drops the lowest one. One final and he also curves generously on all tests. He offers 4 to 5 homework questions as extra credit but you have to do all of the questions assigned to get the extra credit. Does not accept late homework.
has his own textbook for the course which is cheaper compared to other textbooks for the course, but is terribly written. you pay for what you get i guess. there's homework pretty much every class and makes you scan hand written answers for every homework. zero preparation prior to the lecture, and reads off the slides.
I found him v arrogant. Iv taken a handful of eco classes at the 300 level to satisfy my minor & lastly, took micro to complete my minor. His lecture has over 100 students & instead of preparing us with the direct info we need to learn in an accessible way, he gets lost in his own ego. Will use semantics to trip you up on exams. bad emailer too.
i pray that all of you reading this DO NOT TAKE HIM!!! he is the absolute worst. i could write a 20 page thesis on why this man is the worst professor in history. what you learn in class has NOTHING to do with the tests and the homeworks and lectures dont help at all for his exams. you're on your own. AVOID THIS CLASS AT ALL COSTS!!!!!!!!!
Do yourself a favor and dont take this class! You have to learn the stuff on your own. LOts of homework! Exams are full of ambiguous tricky questions.
Alright, this professor talks in his class for the entire class duration. attendance is not mandatory, but you have warm up questions similar to pop quizzes. explains materials from the slides. no review sheet before the exam. exams are hard though you do get a cheat sheet. easy A dont even think about it. you gotta work hard to earn that grade.
Please do not take him, his absolutely terrible. If you want to study for every test and not pass then I think his perfect for you. I never wrote a review for a teacher here, but for this one I had to mainly because his most misleading teacher I ever had His questions on the tests have nothing to do with his slides, homework, book his a GPA dropper
He's not as bad as other reviews have made him out to be! I took Micro Eco without taking an intro course and I feel like the material wasn't hard to get. You do have to teach yourself because he mainly focuses on graphs rather than slides and definitions but he provides his PowerPoints and other resources online. no effort in class fail
He talks way too much, very monotone. Not much interaction or involvement with his students during class. Wrote his own textbook which made it hard for even tutors to comprehend what was being asked. Try to avoid him if you can. The material is heavy enough and his way of teaching just doesn't cut it.
Most confusing class I have ever taken at Hunter College. His textbook is not well written and is beyond confusing along with his long lectures of just him talking. Everything is on canvas and the slides aren't very helpful. Avoid this class if you can, it will only stress you out more
Literally like WTF. Thats all I have to say. Lived through a pandemic in which I had to take an online class that I didnt sign up for. Super confusing material that is explained HIS way only. Dont bother
The good thing about his class is the entire class is curved so an 80 is considered an A-. You have to go to class and take notes because the powerpoints he uploads are missing most of the notes and only have the graphs. If you study the notes from class, you will definitely pass! But if you have the opportunity to take someone else, go for it!
I have never met a more monotone and boring professor. Your grade is based on 2 midterms, 1 quiz, a lot of homework (due two times a week), and a final. His lectures are taken straight from the textbook so even if you don't show up and read you can pass.
do not take it
Greatest Professor in Eco345! I love his class! He makes you work for the grade! If you are hard working, the class is extremely rewarding but challenging! He gets things done efficiently and really cares! I appreciate how much time he puts in and how much he cares about the students. Thank you so much professor! I hope you receive your EMMY!
I want to preface that I NEVER write reviews. This prof was just that awful. First off, 4 exams, 20+ homework assignments, and quizzes EVERY CLASS. Lectures are convoluted with little to no practice for the actual exams. You can't see the correct answers to old exams, homeworks or quizzes (no way to learn from mistakes). AND he is NEVER available.
WORST CLASS THIS SEMESTER, and i'm taking calculus and statistics so it says a lot. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. super confusing text book, dry teaching methods, and confusing exams. almost like he went out of his way to make life harder for people during a pandemic.
Dont take this class unless you want to be stressed out the entirety of the semester.
