great teacher funny great guy but its not that hard you do have to show up every dat cause its a lecture you basically take notes on ehat he speaks but cool teacher fun
Great professor he outlines what you will be learning that day on the board. Never opened the book just studied from notes and got an A in the class. All his tests are from the lectures
Great professor he outlines what you will be learning that day on the board. Never opened the book just studied from notes and got an A in the class. All his tests are from the lectures.
He is a great teacher! Really cares about the info and about making sure his students understand the info. Take this class!! his notes are clear and his tests are based off his notes, study the notes. I enjoyed his classes!
May seem pretty difficult, but as long as you keep notes from hiis lectures and make sure you understand whats on the study guide you will do fine on the exams. If you dont have notes for something on the study guide just ask him the day prior to the test and he will explain. no homework, just exams with m/c and one essay question.
awful teacher. very boring and only likes people who agree with him in class. only if you are a republican and ex marine.
He is one of the best professors I have ever had,he loves what he does and has passion for it. He knows history, and very helpful. He is a decent man who respects his students and who has patience toward ignorance.
knows what he is teaching! he understands many people have trouble with history so he offers helpful extra credit.very good teacher!
McMullen's teaching style is awesome! He essentially just tells you history stories while you take down notes. It's much more entertaining that I anticipated. He gives students multiple opportunities for easy extra credit! There is no reason why you shouldn't get an A in this class. I got a C on every test and just did extra credit to get my A!
McMullen is awesome got an A in his class. Everything on his tests is in the notes and gives a TON of extra credit super funny and honest I would defiantly recommend him!
GREAT teacher! I would definitely recommend him. The class is pretty easy if you just show up and take good notes. You could get a D on every test and as long as you do all the extra credit assignments offered it's still possible to get an A in the class!
very hard. lectures everyday. take good notes read the book on your own and maybe you will pass. only likes people that love history as much as he does.
You will love Mr. McMullen!! Take him, I got a C on the last test, and I still absolutely love this class!!He offers a *TON* of extra credit, lectures are like story time, he is VERY respectful, calling Miss__. He singles people out to answer questions, take very detailed notes!!! SO IMPORTANT.Christian/republican/marine :)) Take him if you can!!
If you are okay with just listening to lectures and taking notes then you'll be okay in this class. I got C's on all the tests and got an overall B grade not too bad...
Great example of what a professor should be. Go to class take notes then go home. ALL you do is listen and take notes in his class. He is funny and lets you out very early most most of the time. NO HW, NO Quizzes, lots of extra credit. As long as you go to class pay attention and write notes you will pass the test.
easy if you go to class
Lectures everyday. Very easy to listen to. Gives you a great study guide for tests, you just have to make sure that you actually study. Attendance is important since the test comes almost exactly from lectures. Textbook use is low.
I would definitely reccomend him. His class is easy, but not ridiculously easy. Just go to class and study the study guide and you will be fine.
GREAT Professor! The tests are difficult I got low C's on all of them but did all the extra credit and passed the class with an A. He wants you to learn so he calls your name to answer questions in class
After taking History 102 with a terrible professor Mr. McMullen was a breath of fresh air! His lectures are interesting and his tangents even more so! EXCELLENT teacher!
Great teacher, he really wants you to pass and learn, gives out a lot ofnextra credit and kinda quizes whole class with questions about last lecture. he lectures for the whole class and all of his info is important so u have to go to every class. his tests are scantron and essay, gives out study guides. pay attention and do ALL of the study guides.
Great teacher. Always keeps class intresting. if you are of the left wing yo should avoid him however. Deffinately take him.
He is an AWESOME teacher, he loves what he teaches and tries to get you to love it too. He announced at the beginning of class that he is a Christian, Conservative, Right Wing-Nut-Job(his own words) and he is ex-Navy. (don't mix it up with the Marines) :) over all my favorite class!
One of my favorite professors ever! Easy to understand and follow the lectures, but note-taking is essential to be ready for exams. Straight-forward and sarcastic/funny teacher who is passionate about the topic (some people were intimidated by him, but not me) Highly recommended :)
He is my favorite professor at Palomar! This is the 1st class I have looked forward to coming to everyday. 5 tests, 1 short paper, and a ton of extra credit. Attendance not mandatory buy tests are from notes. Buy the old edition of the book for 50 cents on eBay, but only needed it to review a bit for tests. Wish I could take the class again!
He's a little tough on the outside, but he's a total teddy bear. If you have difficulties in his class, go speak to him and he'll help you. Watch the movies he recommends; they help a lot. As soon as you see the books needed for his course, get them and read them. Record his lectures! He goes pretty fast. I had a great time in his class.
This guy is a trip. Not a bad teacher. Gives good extra credit opportunities. Pretty boring to sit and listen to. But I'm definitely not interested in history so that might not have helped either. Definitely go to class because a lot of the test questions are from his lecture.
His tests are hard and full of trap questions... but he is a great, entertaining teacher. He gives lots of extra credit opportunities. recommended
I absolutely hate history and he was the best teacher I've ever had... probably ever at Palomar. He is so clear and understanding. He truly wants his students to succeed. Highly recommended.
Ken McMullen is a nice man who wants his students to succeed. However, as "nice" as he may be, he's not a very good historian. His lectures are straight from the book and filled with personal bias. It's clear that he exhibits a low-level understanding of historical method. I wouldn't take him again.
Moves very quickly in lectures - extremely difficult to write what is displayed on the PowerPoint & listen to what he is talking about at the same time. Tests have alot of trick questions - pay close attention to detail! Makes it difficult to decipher what information will be on the test because he says EVERYTHING is important.. A nice guy though
I took both HIST-101 and HIST-102 at the same time with this teacher. He moved very quickly, so be prepared to take fast notes in lectures. He does not update your grade on BB so where you stand is a mystery through the entire class. Do the extrea credit options - it may just save your grade!! He poorly responds to emails & hates to repeat himself.
Oh man this professor is funny, get on his good side but his lectures are awfully boring i recommend a voice recorder and DO ALL THE EXTRA CREDIT. It will help so much the tests are pretty hard 50 points scantron 50 points essay question. I'd take him again just always show up and laugh at his old guy jokes...
I took both HIST 101 & HIST 102 with this guy. He RARELY responds to student emails. He does not post grades on blackboard, so they entire semester your grade is a mystery to you. There are 4 tests - each requires a min 1 page essay question in addition to the scantron portion. He talks very fast and is difficult to keep up with. TAKE GOOD NOTES!!!
He hates to repeat himself, so be weary of asking questions. He doesn't post grades on blackboard so your grade is always a mystery. He talks VERY fast so be prepared for challenging note taking. There is extra credit available, but it's a bit of work to complete as well. Only 4 tests all semester, no quizes or homework. Attendance not mandatory.
give the guy a break!I liked him,I'm tired of the liberals & their agenda. It's not rocket science, hist. is facts there4 u have to have good notes.if you study them, u'll be fine, not worth procrastinatin over.. The EC is a family tree n going to speakin events, how's that hard1? do them! it'll help! this is college not HS...
I am a die-hard liberal, so I was a bit nervous when he said he was a Conservative Republican- but it turned out to be a great learning experience! He doesn't try to force any agenda down your throat- he teaches history through facts and gives you extra credit opportunities. Easily one of the best teachers I've ever had. A!
Hard teacher. 4 tests which you must study for. Gives lots of extra credit options. Makes History interesting but your grade is always a mystery. I finished a week ago and still have no idea what my grade will be. Doesn't let you know how many pts you receive for your extra credit. One mandatory paper, be sure to be specific.
Only 4 tests which are not easy to score well on. Multiple choice tests with an essay question. No homework which is nice, but not helpful to your grade. Long essay on a book due 2 weeks before the final. Great lecturer though and keeps it interesting. Downside is that he's monotone, if that bores you.
This class was so hard, if you're not interested in history, don't take this class.
Professor McMullen is an awesome professor. I highly recommend talking his history classes. I had him for 101 and 102 and had a great experience with him. He is very passionate about his job and is very helpful. Not to mention he is really funny! His lectures are always entertaining. Professor McMullen is an attribute to Palomar college.
If you need to take history 101 or 102, I highly recommend taking Professor McMullen's class! He is an awesome professor and is really passionate about teaching. He is very helpful and only wants the best for his students. His lectures are so fun and he is very fair with grading. Definitely one of the best professors at palomar! :)
Hist 102 with Professor Mcmullen was not easy. Like I worried more about his tests than my Calculus tests because they were a lot harder. I averaged a C on every test, got a 100% on his paper and did 3/4 EC and managed to get an A idk how though. For his mandatory paper, make sure you use direct quotes and answer his questions the way he wants them
Honestly, this class was NOT hard. Granted , I'm pretty good at history and it just sticks , but his lectures and the way he teaches is simple , clear , and he leaves out things from the textbook that you literally do not need to know. Like who so and so's brother was or something like that. Loved his teaching method , would defiantly recommend.
Amazing professor! He is passionate about his work and has awesome lectures. I highly recommend him for History 101 or 102.
His class is not an easy class even if you really enjoy History. There are 4 tests and 1 essay, no quizzes. If you mess up on one it pretty much destroys any chances of getting above a C, however there is extra credit. He is extremely old fashioned, will not adapt to the future Of education, so be prepared to revert to archaic methods of schooling
Tests are hard. But there's about 120 pts of easy extra credit available that makes it hard to fail unless you just don't care. He is very knowledgeable also! He throws out pop questions at the beginning of class, but they aren't worth points so you aren't penalized. Cracks some jokes to wake people up, and is a great professor. I would take again!
This guy is awesome. I loved going to class everyday, though the one gripe I have is that he goes super quick. Better have a laptop handy or be a fast writer! He may be monotone, but he's funny and interesting. Definitely take McMullen for History 101102!
Professor McMullen made history so interesting to me. Definitely would take him again if i already hadn't taken all of the courses he teaches. All lectures are intriguing as he tells them like a story. He's passionate of his work, you can tell the by listening to him. He's funny and a good teacher, extra credit is there and is easy to get.
I personally had a horrible experience, he changed the study guide last min wo telling us and as I studied ahead of time had all the wrong info for the essay portion of the exam (counts for 50% of exam). When I talked to him about it all he said was "sorry" and moved on. I don't understand why a teacher would discourage studying ahead of time.
I took Prof McMullen for both Hist 101 and 102 and its a great class. There are only 4 tests (half scantron and half essay) which he gives a study guide for. The tests are bit tough but he gives 100 pts extra credit which helps. There is a responsive book paper that you will have to do but you are aloud to make changes for new grade.
Great lecturer, funny and not afraid to tell you how he feels, which I admire in a professor. Tests are hard, so be sure to study, do the extra credit, and there is one paper that he lets you fix, DO IT. Not much to be graded on, so make sure you don't slack off. No homework to buffer a bad test. I would take him again, and study more.
Prof McMullen is a wonderful person and one of the finest Professors I have ever had. However he belongs in a University with a BA or MA program. He is a tough grader and his tests are on what he has covered not the book. Dont miss class, follow his instructions and record his lectures & transfer your audio to notes and you will do great!
Professor McMullen is a great professor. The test are hard, but if you take good notes you shall do fine on the test. First is a 50 question ScanTron (50 Points), then and Essay question (50 Points). He allows up to 100pts in extra credit! Great lectures and very informative. Overall had a great experience in Histoy 101 can't wait for History 102.
At first impression, he can seem intimidating. But he is not. He knows his history very well. To pass this class all you have to do is take detailed notes from lecture which you can use for quiz. If you miss a class you miss part of the test. He give a essay portion on exams but he will give you the questions. Extra credit is simple and helps.
- This guy is a History nut. His enthusiasm is reflected in his entertaining lectures. - Lots of essays, designed to help prepare new students for college level essays. Take Prof. McMullen first! - Majority of test material based on lecture material, not the book. Detailed notetaking essential to pass!
- This guy is a History nut. His enthusiasm is reflected in his entertaining lectures. - Lots of essays, designed to help prepare new students for college level essays. Kenneth McMullen is the best professor! Took him for 101 and 102 and loved his teaching style. Super passionate about history and it is actually very interesting to listen to his lectures. Entire class is a lecture and you will need to take detailed notes to pass. Allowed notecards for test, and no need in buying a text book.
he offers 100 points of extra credit which is how i got my A in the class even though my tests grades were low. be very detailed on his few papers, he gives feedback to improve your papers grade. he looks scary but he's actually nice and kinda funny. i would take again to get an A.
easily one of the toughest graders out there... If youre trying to cruise through the stupid prerequisites of History DO NOT TAKE this man!
- four test - two papers in which he grades and gives back to you to FIX! - LOTS of easy extra credit
He gives you every opportunity to get an A. Just put in effort and you will be fine, the amount of extra credit offered is amazing. Do exactly what he asks of you and you will get an A. He LOVES history and it made me love it too. I wish I would have taken him for 102, he was great!
100% dry lecture & reading bullet points on slides, hardly makes history bearable. Too bad because you can tell he honestly really loves history... it just doesn't translate to good teaching skills at all. Does NOT return emails. Don't need textbook. DO need Bay of Pigs & Golden State. Positives: Extra credit + study guides. Would not recommend.
Decent prof, however you have to work for your grade. Requires you to purchase "Apostles of Disunion", which was never discussed in context in class. Had decent, interesting lectures. Graded on 4 tests, and 2 papers.
There is extra credit to help you pass the class, however the tests are difficult. There are 2 papers, that are graded tough. You can get a higher grade by fixing your errors, but there isnt any homework to balance out your grade. Course is based on the tests and papers, if you dont do so great on the two youll have to rely on the extra credit
Without a doubt, unequivocally the best teacher I have ever had. Very knowledgeable, and relays all the info back to you for anyone to understand. Show up and take notes and it's an easy A on tests. There's an essay at the end which takes time, but is very simple! Offers a ton of extra credit, and is actually a really funny guy! Much recommend!!!
Does not post grades on canvas When emailing him about assignments, he 100% ignores it. When it comes to essay he has his own dumb format and doesnt want you to use mla format Notes and lectures are just going back and forth so its hard to follow the story. One of the worst teachers I've ever had. He was surprised by how many people stayed till end
His tests ask very specific questions that he doesn't go over in his lectures. You either need to take the best notes of your life (and really quick because he teaches fast) or read over every topic in the book assigned. Awesome guy but a very very tough grader. I'm a straight A student and this class really messed up my GPA...
This professor continoiusly keeps the essay dates hidden until 24 hours before its due, extremely hard grader. Would never take again!!!!
Very few assignments but the tests are tough, if COVID didn't move everything online, I would not have passed his exams in person. Study guide just has names, questions are super involved and long. Hard to study for. Even using the internet I still get 70's on his tests, and so do other class mates. No busy work but hard to get an A
He assigns no homework, but this hurts your grade in the long run because it's based on tests. He's a very difficult grader and his tests are impossible. His lectures are very boring and monotone it makes you want to fall asleep. Avoid if you can because you're not going to learn anything.
This is not a History class, this is a English class. If youre not competent in writing a well grammar and punctual essay, do not, I REPEAT DO NOT take this course! His style of teaching is terrible, if you seek help from the professor, this is not the one for you. I wish I could write a happier rating but this definitely is not the class!!!!!!!
At least in his online class, it is a nightmare. He grades assignments based on criteria never stated. The best way to do his essays is to summarize the textbook rather than to research the material. He assigns a paper worth about a third of the class and states the guideline for the paper days before it is due. Don't take online course from him.
The school needs to fire him at the earlier connivence for the sake of the student's mental health. He's horrible, and YOU WILL FAIL THIS CLASS, NO QUESTION ABOUT IT.
You end up learning completely from the textbook, as listening to lectures is hit or miss. Sometimes the test will contain material from the lectures and other times the information is completely useless. He replied to almost every one of my questions and emails after about 5+ days of waiting, most of the time not even answering the full question.
Isn't clear about what he wants on assignments but grades very harshly. Will not give feedback on most assignments and doesn't answer his email so good luck figuring out how to raise your grade. Some extra credit available. He also makes up quizzes out of nowhere that are due the day they are posted to canvas but doesn't say anything about them.
Super knowledgeable about US History, tries to make it as entertaining as possible. Took his class for HIST 101+102. One paper majority of grade-doesn't provide clear rubrics for grading, try to be thorough. Lets u revise. Read instructions carefully. Few quizzes, couple pg papers, 4 exams. Offers lots of extra credit bumped my grade one letter up.
So this was honestly one of the worst professors I have ever had. His grading system for papers was not based off of the material but the grammar and format. If it had not been for the study group I was, I would have failed the class. You can tell that he loves history but he is a terrible teacher.
To paint a picture of my experience, I worked four days on an essay worth 50% of the grade: he gave me a zero because I forgot to double space and didn't "use the right format" despite not explaining what that meant. He gave me a chance to resubmit it, and he never graded it, resulting in me failing. Yeah, I'm never taking his class again.
No Grading Criteria. No feedback on assignments. No time for tests that contain the most cryptic shuffled questions I've ever read in my life - most of which are not covered in lectures. I didn't even complete my tests on a couple of occasions because I ran out of time. So frustrated I wanted to drop the class so many times. I regret taking it..
WORST PROFESSOR EVER!!!! Unclear grading criteria, took ages to respond to emails. Lectures were just titles with some words. Would rant about us contacting him and how we shouldn't have to. NEVER sent weekly updates. Completely uninvolved with his students in the class. No feedback for grading criteria just marks. Be safe out there y'all!
I enjoyed that the class was asynchronous so I waited until the week of exams to go through his video lectures and skim the textbook. As long as you do the reading/studying you should be fine. He is not accessible and his grading criteria is confusing at first but I managed. He allows resubmission on a huge paper which got me from a B to an A!
This professor has been by far the WORST professor/teacher I have ever had. He is so rude and he belittles his students. He does not care what is going on with a students life, blames it on them if they fail. When it comes to essays, he doesnt say how many pages, fails you if you write too much. Extremely insane. DO NOT TAKE. Worst Professor Alive.
Tough grader, there is one main project "Apostles of Disunion" He gives two shots at this essay. First attempt you'll get tons of feedback, I got a low grade on the first essay, however this did NOT affect my grade. I fixed everything he said and got an 85 on the final essay. His exams are easy if you watch his lectures. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT!
Professor McMullen is not entirely bad. Just have to do exactly what he says to the dot. Pretty bad at responding to emails and questions, and is kind of rude when he does. Be extra precise when doing corrections, takes off a lot of points for odd reasons. After my corrections, it boosted my grade by a ton. Doesn't really give feedback either.
This professor belittles you and does not help you. He does not reply to emails in timely manner. He does not put word count. He does not make clear and understandable instructions for tests or test essays. He is very rude. Do not take this class or teacher. Even turning in extra credit is not ok with him.
I took his class for two weeks but had to drop it because I felt like interest were not similar. He gave us time to talk in class and let us leave early the first couple of days.
You could tell that he is very passionate about the subject. He acknowledged his conservative bias at the beginning of the semester, but regularly failed to keep it out of lectures imo. He also had a strange and specific format for papers and citations and some exam questions and essay prompts were hard to decipher. Ok but would not recommend.
The passion is there, but the grading is tough. I recommend doing office hours if you are confused, it's the reason I learned a big paper is no longer due. There are no textbooks, just focus on the lectures and take very good notes. Be extremely detailed in test essays or massive points are taken off.
This is the WORST professor I have ever had. It might've been the fact that I took this course online during the summer but it's still not an excuse. I would send him countless emails which he would reply to five days later or not even reply at all. Has absolutely zero communication skills. AVOID HIM!!!
I was just accused of AI content in my compare and contrast essay. He did not provide examples or evidence as to why he thought this in my feedback. My file is cleared and clean from Palomar's AI and plagiarism checker as well as two other AI checkers. I will be documenting all further interactions with this professor and possibly withdrawing.
Ken is extremely unorganized, constantly makes mistakes on his own instructions but then edits them and acts like it had been that way from the start, gaslighting the student (screenshots exist lol). He will leave unprofessional condescending comments on assignments, with no instruction on how to improve. Wont respond to email. Accused me of AI
he definitely has passion about the subject but you need to have really good memory In order to remember what is being talked about in class that's not on the power point because that stuff will be on the test and for the essays add as much detail you can think of to get a full credit, he's ok and seems cool but I probably wouldn't take him again.
